Bob Bernhardt‘s 40th Anniversary with Louisville Orchestra BY KATHIE STAMPS • COURTESY PHOTOS
appily coinciding with Principal Pops Conductor Bob Bernhardt’s 40th season, the Louisville Orchestra is back with a blockbuster 2021-2022 “New Beginnings” season calendar. The five-concert Pops Series celebrates fun, popular music with full orchestra, including an “Irresistible John Williams” program honoring Bob’s milestone anniversary. From Prohibition-era jazz and standards to the hits of ABBA and Elton John, the series has promised something for everyone as we return for the excitement of live music. Bob Bernhardt’s journey with the Louisville Orchestra began in Spring 1981 as Assistant Conductor. He has since served as Associate Conductor, then Principal Guest Conductor of Kentucky Opera, and is now in his 25th season as Principal Pops Conductor. Bob is also in his 7th season as Principal Pops Conductor of the Grand Rapids Symphony in Michigan and his 29th season with the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera, where he serves as Principal Pops Conductor and Music Director Emeritus. Bob lives with his wife Nora in Signal Mountain, Tennessee.
Louisville audiences were the first to let me know that it was all right for me to be myself on the podium - for better or for worse ”
Likely the only music conductor ever invited to spring training with the Kansas City Royals, Bob was encouraged to pursue the arts after four days around the Big Leaguers. Bob was an Academic All-American baseball player, Phi Beta Kappa, and graduated summa cum laude from Union College in Schenectady, New York. He studied with Daniel Lewis, earning a Master’s degree from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music. After a year of submitting applications for conducting jobs, Bob landed an audition at the University of Alabama and became an Assistant Professor in 1978. Bob has made his conducting debut and return engagements with major orchestras across the United States and Canada, including the Boston Pops. He has conducted with the Edmonton Symphony and served as Festival Conductor for “Symphony Under the Sky” for the past fourteen years. But Louisville continues to lure Bob back.

top notes “Louisville audiences were the first to let me know that it was all right for me to be myself on the podium – for better or for worse - and my jokes have all along pretty much been worse. What a gift it has been to simply be me.” Bob’s wife Nora once served as Director of Development for Speed Art Museum, and before that, Director of Marketing and Development for the LO, which is when they first met. The Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory is a draw for Bob, as is Churchill Downs and the area distilleries, basically, all-things Louisville. The “crown jewel” of Bob’s time with the Louisville Orchestra was inviting mentor and friend John Williams to conduct. “The orchestra played so beautifully for him. I was proud of the whole organization and especially the musicians.” Another highlight was his 25th Anniversary “Bob’s Favorites” concert. “This orchestra taught me my job, forgave early mistakes, and has remained generous through the years. I’ve been able to meet so many of the entertainers I admired most, the vast majority of whom are even nicer than I imagined.” The Pops series kicked off its current season on October 23, 2021, with the music of “Prohibition,” starring the diverse, dynamic artistry of Myra Maud and featuring Kentucky’s own Bronson Norris Murphy and leading concert soprano Madison Claire Parks. A “turnkey operation” with a touring company, the program had two orchestra rehearsals. Bob particularly enjoyed “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?” and “What’ll I Do?” as well as the challenge of Raymond Scott’s “intricate and tricky” instrumental interludes. Myra Maud encouraging the audience to sing along with “La Vie En Rose” - masks and all - created an unexpectedly moving moment.
Following November 2021’s Holiday Pops with Tony DeSare is the “Irresistible John Williams” program on January 15. Bob’s 40th Anniversary concert features the music of his friend and hero. “It’s a combination of music everyone knows and the more obscure works that I adore - a little selfish, but it’s what I love.” Expect to hear familiar themes and tunes from the Indiana Jones films, Star Wars, Memoirs of a Geisha, War Horse, and Far and Away. “A Tribute to ABBA” on March 19 is a collaboration with the tribute band known as “Arrival from Sweden,” whom Bob has worked with many times. “The orchestra is very much involved. It’s a concert and a party!” April 22 brings Michael Cavanaugh and the music of Elton John. Cavanaugh is a singer, pianist, and “top-flight entertainer” who was hand-picked by Billy Joel to star as Billy Joel in the hit Broadway musical “Movin’ Out.” Bob did not have the complete Elton John program at press time but hoped it might include Rocket Man, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Tiny Dancer, Candle in the Wind, and Philadelphia Freedom. “My conducting style is collaborative. I love having the privilege of making music with other people. As a conductor, you must know what you want. You have to lead but be relaxed enough to hear what’s happening. I try to be clear in what I want. I once had a professor who never got mad unless you were unprepared. My responsibility on the podium is in large part to have studied and be ready.” As for his Louisville Orchestra legacy, he hopes to be remembered as “a loyal and hardworking colleague who gave back as much as he got and had fun doing it.”

Be educated and selective on how you plan your itinerary. Consider in the beginning of the planning process if you want an all-inclusive vacation destination where your dining and activities may be included. There are also travel options that are all-inclusive tours where you find a desired itinerary and leave the transportation and the planning of your desired activities to the tour company. However, you may want to explore and adventure by planning a flexible itinerary that you facilitate on your own. Relax and enjoy your trip! Be sure to disconnect and reconnect with your friends and family members. A trip that is planned well should have everything in place that you desire before you go. However, when going to most vacation destinations, accept that you won’t be able to do and see everything. But I assure you will make some wonderful memories in however much you accomplish and enjoy. Think about your activities, check the weather forecast and pack accordingly. I always recommend making a list (and checking it twice!) Pack comfortable shoes if you’ll be walking a lot. While the forecast may change, be sure to have rain gear such as poncho/rain jacket. For those hot sunny days be sure to pack sunscreen and pain medications (i.e, Tylenol or Advil). In summary, maximizing your experience while traveling is all about detailed and advanced planning. I have so many other tips to share! January is a time to reflect on the previous twelve months and turn our focus to the year ahead. What progress did the city make in 2021? And what are the economic expectations for Louisville in 2022? To help answer these questions, we turn to the business, financial, and real estate experts.

Greater Louisville Inc. Just over a year into the Now Louisville Strategic Plan for 2020-2025, Greater Louisville, Inc., The Metro Chamber of Commerce, is celebrating significant success in 2021. The five-year economic development plan, launched in September 2020, is framed around six pillars - innovation, startups, clusters, talent, inclusion, connectivity + mobility - identified by the business community. GLI President & CEO Sarah Davasher-Wisdom shares the past year’s achievements and optimism for 2022. “I am proud of what GLI has accomplished this year, and I cannot thank all the businesses who contributed to the campaign enough for making this plan a reality.” Hired to form the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion team, Dana Johnson and Dr. Eric Jordan “hit the ground running” to launch the Power to Prosper Minority Business Accelerator, which graduated its first cohort of twelve businesses in early December. “Many are already reporting profit increases, and all of them indicated they walked away with increased business acumen and strong relationships with large corporations that will hope-
fully lead to future contracts, partnerships, and mentorships,” says Davasher-Wisdom. The department also brought together over 200 community businesses to sign Greater Louisville’s Equity Pledge. “On the talent front, we were able to successfully launch the ‘Finding You in Lou’ program to help retain emerging talent completing internships in the region.” As for 2022, Davasher-Wisdom sees “tremendous positive momentum” in “the trajectory of our regional and business community in Greater Louisville.” She points to major economic development investments, such as the Ford Blue Oval SK Battery Park announced last September, and the impact of more spending, travel, and the return of large-scale events from pent-up consumer demand and increased job security. “In 2021, new and existing businesses in our region announced nearly $7 billion of new investment and the creation of over 9,000 new jobs. That is tremendous by any standard, but even more remarkable in a year of recovery.”
Davasher-Wisdom expects to see “continued and accelerated economic growth” this year. “Greater Louisville is well-positioned as a hub for logistics, advanced manufacturing, e-commerce, and health and aging innovation – all industries that are continuing to grow and expand. As global supply chain shortages are resolved, our signature industries will maximize their operations and keep up with demand.” GLI will continue to focus on talent attraction campaigns like Live in Lou. “By marketing our low cost of living, limited traffic, numerous arts, parks, and culinary amenities, we can attract and retain both degreed and non-degreed talent into our businesses for job opportunities.” Visit greaterlouisville.com and follow @GLIchamber on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Live in Lou Live in Lou, Greater Louisville Inc’s talent attraction campaign to market the regional economy, remains highly successful as local population growth and business recovery from the pandemic continue. Vice President of Talent, Workforce, & Brand Strategies Christine Tarquinio feels good about projected numbers. “In 2021 alone, Louisville received many accolades as a great place to live, work, and visit, including making Travel & Leisure’s list of the top 50 places to visit in the world. Our economic momentum directly ties into population growth,” says Tarquinio. “As more innovative and highly skilled industries move to Louisville, we will see more talent moving to our region to fill those roles. I believe we will also continue to see more remote workers move to Louisville. This trend accelerated during the pandemic when people realized they could work remotely for the same company from cities with lower costs of living and more amenities.” The business outlook is equally optimistic. “Our economy is on a strong path. People are feeling more stable and navigating how to create a new normal even with COVID-19 in the picture. That is creating more certainty for business owners looking to expand or entrepreneurs looking to start new concepts. A few weeks ago, Consumer Cellular announced expansion into Louisville, bringing close to 500 support jobs to the region. Noble Funk Brewing is set to open in Old Louisville, and Against the Grain is opening a new concept called Whirling Tiger in Butchertown.”
Louisville’s employment opportunities are already plentiful, with employers offering highly competitive wages and benefits. The local job seeker’s market should only get better in 2022. According to Tarquinio, “GE is in the process of a large expansion that will add over 1,000 new jobs in the next two years. We currently have 34 companies in the pipeline looking to relocate to our region. And as we grow our standing as a tech hub with the help of TechFirst, GLI’s tech network, more companies and jobs are becoming available for those looking to grow a tech career.” The initiative continues to expand its reach. “This year, we gained over 9,000 new followers on our social media channels and had over 68,000 site visits to our website.” But the GLI and Live in Lou teams are not resting on their laurels. “We are also working with employers in Greater Louisville to develop some tools to help them attract talent. Currently, we offer private label advertising campaigns to analyze and identify geographies where the supply of specific talent outpaces demand and salaries are comparable. We then build a customized digital campaign to attract talent in those geographies and drive them to a custom page to complete their applications. Through a partnership with LinkedIn, we can also identify and recruit hard-to-find talent as well.” Visit liveinlou.com. Follow @liveinlou on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest.
Greater Louisville Association of Realtors® The more attractive Louisville is to individuals, families, and businesses, the greater the need for residential and commercial real estate. We turned to Greater Louisville Association of Realtors®’ (GLAR) CEO Lynda Fernandez for a look back at the local real estate market in 2021 and what the future holds in this new year. Fernandez is former Chief of Communications & Global for the 52,000+- member Miami Association of Realtors®’ with over twenty years of experience in association and government management, communications, and international business development. “The Louisville real estate market in 2021, like most markets throughout the U.S., experienced robust sales activity coupled with very limited supply, resulting in significant increases in pricing,” says Fernandez. “Following the brief market interruption caused by the pandemic in 2020, the real estate market recovered faster and stronger than experts predicted. Consumers’ needs suddenly changed. There was a need for larger homes, space to work and school children from home, and set-ups more conducive to social distancing.” GLAR expects home sales prices to moderate in part due to interest rate increases in 2022. “While the housing shortage is expected to persist for years, NAR® Chief Economist Lawrence Yun has forecasted a modest increase in housing starts as the supply chain backlogs subside.” John Lenihan, Principal Broker of Lenihan Sotheby’s International Realty (lenihansothebysrealty.com), expects
Northwestern Mutual®
housing prices to continue to rise, especially new construction. “Inflation and supply chain issues have affected every component of new construction.” Fernandez insists it is still more affordable to buy than rent. Encouraged by Louisville’s continued population growth, Fernandez is optimistic that the real estate market will continue to perform well in 2022. “Strong demand for local properties will continue into the new year. Despite the slight increase in supply, inventory will remain limited, driving home price increases but, as mentioned before, at a slower rate.” Real estate experts are not troubled with concerns about a potential housing market crash. According to Fernandez, “There are no signs of a bubble, meaning there is no reason to expect a bust. Today’s real estate market is very different from in 2006 and 2007. Housing inventory remains very low.” John Lenihan agrees, “We have simply seen a lot of pent-up demand work through the market but nothing approaching a mania as happens in some coastal and resort markets.” Fernandez says credit remains tight, and lenders aren’t issuing risky loans. “Based on supply and demand, home prices are not forecasted to drop. The majority of homeowners today would have sufficient equity were they forced to sell even if prices dropped somewhat. They wouldn’t be facing a short sale or foreclosure and would still have accumulated wealth.”
Financial Advisor Rob H. King III, WMCP®, CLTC®, describes the Northwestern Mutual® investment philosophy as “always contingent on a plan.” Built on a foundation of “Help One, Help Many,” Northwestern Mutual®’s financial planning practice aids clients through planning and education. When you properly plan to meet your individual goals, “you are not only helping yourself but helping others in your family and community.” Knowledge is power. King and his team take stock of the client’s family structure and what they’ve already done. “We then start by creating a plan. What planning have they done, and what do they want to accomplish? We define short, near, and long-term goals, then build a strategy to move the client to those goals with 100% certainty. Our proprietary, robust planning software allows us to share information digitally and track goals in real-time through the Northwestern Mutual® smartphone app. 2022 marks Rob King’s 18th year with Northwestern Mutual®, having joined the financial services organization right out of college. King is a proud graduate of duPont Manual High School and received his Bachelor’s degree in economics from Centre College. From the beginning, he has spent his career helping married professionals, medical professionals, business owners, and those on the doorstep of retirement. To start the year off right, King offers his financial planning tips for 2022: So first things first! The Fed has announced three projected interest rate
increases, in quarter-point increments, this year. (The fed funds rate is expected to climb to 2.1% by 2024.) “Refinance mortgages and student loans now,” says King. “Use that extra cash flow to round out your emergency fund.” “Boost your 2021 IRA contributions before the April 15 retirement contribution deadlines.” “Considering over 800,000 American lives lost to the COVID-19 pandemic, reevaluate your individual and employer-based life insurance policies. What coverage do you have? Are there any exclusions?” “Review your long-term investment strategy. Are you comfortable with the amount of tax you are either deferring or not?” For more information, visit robking-nm. com. Fashion DOs & DONTs of Early 2022 BY JAYME JACKSON
In a world that is still stuck somewhere between Covid, working remote and it’s time to party our normal list of Do’s and Don’ts have shifted from being strong recommendations, instead to a collection of ideas and suggestions. Basically, we find ourselves asking, what looks good and for whom we dress? So, over the past few weeks we asked the opposite sex some of the best do’s and don’ts that keep them looking just a tad longer or can’t turn a head altogether. This is what the gentlemen and ladies of Lexington had to say.. DO
The Base Bra, $40 | Harper Wilde
DO
Start with a good foundation. This applies to men and women. Invest in good bra’s and underwear, VPL’s are a major no-no and whitey-tidies are your daddy’s underwear. Ladies, a sports bra does not count as a bra unless you are exercising. Fellas, throw away your bacon necked white t-shirts and opt for new ones, every guy needs a great, bright white t-shirt.
The number one rule for dressing is to compliment your shape and your age. Every suggestion doesn’t work on every body type and even though Harper Valley PTA may have frowned on a miniskirt, at the right age and right build they are one of 22’s top trends. Super High Waisted Tweed Mini Skirt, $80 | Express
The Organic Cotton Crew, $24 | Everlane
January 2022 | TOPSinLex.com
TOPS LOUISVILLE | january 2022 21 49
Men's Court Sneakers in White Leather, $148 | J Crew
DO Find a great white tennis shoe. Not too athletic looking, these shoes will carry you straight through fall and look great with dresses, shorts and ankle pants. Our suggestion don’t spend too much, it is easier to buy 2 pairs of inexpensive white shoes than agonizing over keeping one pricey pair white.
DON'T Wear cargo pants or shorts. Unless you are a soldier, a hunter or medical personnel. You can’t possibly need that many pockets.
DON'T Wear black socks with athletic shoes!
DO Women's Darleena Leather Sneaker, $89 | Lucky Brand
M5 Slim Legacy Stackable Straight Leg Jean, $59.95 | Ariat
DO wear a classic blazer. This goes for both men and women. A well fitted blazer (we’d suggest buying one a tad big and having it tailored or if you have the option, have it custom made) to pair with slacks or jeans. Pick a fabric that is seasonless and a silhouette that enhances your build.
get a great pair of jeans. These are an investment. We would suggest a classic pair of straight leg or bootcut to lengthen your legs and give a more tailored appearance. For ladies, low waist jeans are coming back in style, don’t worry we aren’t talking about Britney Spears low rise just a waist band that sits at your well, waist. Men, your jeans should be a mid-wash rinse not too light and not too dark and they need to be fitted. A great loafer or boot can dress up any pair of jeans so go for a classic fit that accentuates your best assets.
Original Bootcut in New York Dark, $225 | 7 for all Mankind
DON'T
Gold Button Blazer in Navy Blue | $120, Love and Labels
22 TOPS LOUISVILLE | january 2022 50
Custom Navy Blazer, price upon request | Jameson Douglas
TOPS in Lexington | January 2022
buy cheap leggings. Some things you can get on sale, but leggings should not be in this category. Remember the saying that “Leggings and small children cannot keep secrets”. Opt for a thicker, yet breathable fabric which will help hide your sins.
DO Invest in a great belt. For jeans, slacks, oversized sweaters and to nip in the waist of a dress. A great belt is second only to a great pair of pointy toed pumps or saddle brown shoes for men.
Classic Belt, $45 | Coach Outlet
DO Wear bright colors in the colder months. Colorful clothing bounces light back into your face and eyes which make you appear rested and energized and let’s admit it, we do love a man in pink.
Fashion Circle Belt in brown, $39.50 | Levis
Morgen Jacquard Sweater, $108 | Lily Pulitzer
DON'T Show your mid-drift unless it’s a night out on the town no matter how perfectly cute your tummy is. No one wants to have dinner or lunch with you while looking at your belly button.
Saltwater Quarter Zip in Blue Heather, $98.50 | Vineyard Vines
DO Wear metallics, sequins and shimmer all year long anytime of day. 2022 calls for sparkles. During the day opt for a mixed media shirt such as solid sweater with sequined sleeves Mixed Media Round Neck Long Sequin Mesh Balloon Sleeve Statement Sweater by Vince Camuto, $99 | Dillards
DON'T Thou shalt NEVER wear DUDES shoes.
The overwhelming answer from both sexes was a person who looks “put together”. Some attention to hair, makeup, clothes and shoes. It’s not enough to have a great shirt and a terrible haircut. When you choose your clothing you should keep in mind the total appearance head-to-toe. One of the most attractive things that anyone can wear in 2022 is confidence. Make this your best year, be confident in what makes you feel great and then you will look great. Don’t get us wrong, the TOPS team loves our leggings and tunics but we will admit that when we put together a total look, we do feel better and feeling better about yourself is the greatest gift you can give in the new year.

Building on the rich and innovative history of the Louisville Orchestra, Musical Director Teddy Abrams, in his eighth season, is continuing to break new ground and earn accolades amid, and in response to, these challenging times for artists and arts organizations. His current season directly reflects the orchestra’s past, facing contemporary realities and offering fresh inspiration for a community looking toward a brighter future. Recently named 2022 Conductor of the Year by Musical America, Abrams kicks off the new year with the world premiere of his major piano concerto composed for his friend, world-renowned pianist Yuja Wang. To provide context for the remainder of the season and exciting performances ahead, Abrams acknowledges the contributions made and struggles endured by the Louisville Orchestra. The orchestra was founded in 1937 by Robert Whitney, for whom Whitney Hall - largest performance venue in the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts - is named, and Louisville Mayor Charles Farnsley. In 1953, the orchestra received a Rockefeller grant amounting to what would be $5 million today to record and premiere music by 20th-century living composers. Despite being the first American orchestra to own a recording label and later receiving grants for digitizing master tapes and restoring music scores for archiving recordings, the orchestra fell on financial hardship for a time. Before he accepted the position, Abrams recognized, “We had a lot of work to do to make an orchestra that was not just worthy of our city, but could be a leadership institution around the world.” More recently, as Abrams and the orchestra were already planning a four-year exploration of music by Black and Jewish composers, the challenges of a global pandemic and protests for Breonna Taylor descended upon the city. “With the Covid disruption, we had a jigsaw puzzle of existing commitments and rescheduling. We plan far in advance to bring forth significant and impactful performances while maintaining flexibility to offer perspective. Emphasizing diverse musical styles and backgrounds includes the community so that the stage reflects the city, where people feel the concert hall is home and they have ownership. This season’s programming is a manifestation of that mission.” 28 TOPS LOUISVILLE | january 2022

His personal experiences inform Abrams’s professional decision-making as well. “Through the different phases of dealing with these challenges, it’s easy to forget how frightening this time has been for artists and all involved with artistic events. From my perspective, we leaped into action. There was no time to wallow in sorrows or fear. Louisville needed symbols of hope and positivity to remind them this city was a place they still wanted to live. We had to be nimble and creative to sell that vision. This group effort has been very gratifying.” Abrams composed and recorded “Float Rumble Rest” in 2016 as a tribute to Muhammad Ali, featuring guitarist Jim James of My Morning Jacket and benefitting the Muhammad Ali Center. His 2018 collaboration with James, song cycle The Order of Nature, was performed with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in 2019. Abrams has performed with and conducted ensembles and orchestras across the country and worldwide. In addition to conducting and composing, Teddy Abrams is an accomplished pianist and clarinetist. Now 34, he was a protégé of Michael Tilson Thomas from age eleven. At 18, Abrams graduated with a Bachelor of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He was the youngest conducting student ever accepted by Curtis Institute of Music and Aspen Music Festival and School. At Curtis, Abrams was assigned as accompanist to fellow student Yuja Wang, and their friendship has endured. Known for her dazzling artistry and fashionable stage presence, Beijing-born Yuja Wang was named Musical America Artist of the Year in 2017. The international superstar pianist is a leading artist on the Deutsche Grammophon classical music label. Inspired by her interpretation of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, Abrams was determined to compose a piano concerto incorporating American classical music’s jazz and high energy with his compositional voice. “It’s a reflection of the music I like to listen to and play. Improvisation and classical training allow me to move freely between different styles yet remain cohesive and comprehensive.” While Abrams admits that his piano concerto for Yuja is quite tricky, it is also “a piece that she TOPS LOUISVILLE | january 2022 29

can own and be free. The soloist is expected to have her own perspective and interpretation.” He describes it as Gershwin and Rachmaninoff meeting in the 23rd century. “There is one big 35-minute movement where she can have fun as an expressive artist.” Yuja sent back helpful notes on the piece, and the two made some adjustments remotely. Louisville audiences will attend the world premiere on January 7 & 8. January 20-22 Teddy Abrams will conduct Music Without Borders: Celebrating Young Talent, “which takes the orchestra and Abrams’ creative programming out of the concert hall and into the community.” Piano soloist Michelle Cann, another Curtis alum, joins Louisville Orchestra for the world premiere of the LO commission by young Louisville composer KiMani Bridges, followed by Gershwin’s Second Rhapsody for Piano and Orchestra and Dvořák Symphony No. 8. In March, Abrams and the Louisville Orchestra will celebrate a Festival of Latin American Music, featuring marquis commissions from Grammy- and MacArthur Fellowship-winning Cuban composer Dafnis Prieto and Puerto Rico native Angélica Negrón. Prieto’s Tentación Concerto for People of Earth and String Orchestra showcases the timba band backed by the Louisville Orchestra. Negrón’s 12-minute orchestral work is colorful and includes electronics. “The color, passion, and rhythmic energy of Latin music explode with these brilliant works.” April 30’s “Reclaimed Treasures” is the first in a multi-season exploration of Jewish and Black composers. Being Jew-

ish himself, Abrams is interested in their vital work and underlying relationships. He offers examples of Gershwin musicals and operas and their Black casts, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday singing works of Jewish composers, and the Weimar-era music in Germany. “With historical oppression comes a shared solidarity, a spiritual song cycle.” On May 13 & 14, the thrilling season finale “Fantastique” combines KiMani Bridges’ new work with the world premiere of Adam Schoenberg’s “Automation” featuring cellist Yves Dharmaraj. A second halldorophone (part cello, part electronics) built especially for this performance will debut in Louisville. The first such instrument, designed by artist Halldór Úllfarsson, gained recognition in early 2020 when composer Hildur Guðnadóttir won the Academy Award for her original “Joker” soundtrack. The program concludes with the “wild and virtuosic” Symphonie fantastique by Berlioz. As for what comes next, Abrams hopes that his recognition as Conductor of the Year will find Louisville “discussed on a wider playing field” and allow him to represent the city on a larger platform. It also challenges him to focus on the work he believes in. “I feel a deeper level of service to the community and my art. Every piece of music starts at zero. You have to keep that humility.” Abrams loves living in Louisville. “Even with significant challenges that are deep and long-lasting, Louisvillians fundamentally care about where they live. The people want to give, and the city has compassion at its core. We strive to create a thriving, dynamic hub where culture matters on a deeper level.”

KELLY K DJ AT WDJX An authentic voice in radio, Kelly K marks 23 years on DJX as herself- a genuine person. “I think people know when you are trying to create a character,” she says. “What you hear is who I am, and I feel so lucky that our audience still enjoys our humor!” While the show often sounds off the cuff and extemporaneous, Kelly clarifies. “I’m sure to most people we sound like we’re just goofing off every morning, but there is a method to the madness. Prepping never really turns off. Everything we do or watch or read kind of gets put through a filter of ‘can this work on the air somehow’.” Known for her distinctive laugh, quick wit, and a good balance of silly fun and a warm heart, Kelly recognizes that any successful person has many others behind them. “I have some amazing people in my village,” she says. “I love being invited into morning routines and hope we can give our audience a little break from the stresses they face. STERLING RIGGS ANCHOR AT WDRB “Local news is critically important in Kentuckiana and cities across the nation,” says Sterling Riggs. “It keeps people informed, holds elected officials accountable, and lets people know about important changes happening in our community. Local journalists, including myself, strive to stay in middle of an issue and report only the facts. National commentators share their opinion and push an agenda or political party. I don’t share my opinion on issues, I dig for facts.” Sterling observes that the TV business is not as glamorous as it may seem. “It’s extremely hard work,” he says. “I get up at 2:45am and have to be at the studio by 3:30am. Journalists are often exposed to some extremely emotional situations. If you stay in this business long enough, you are going to have some wild stories tell. Personally, I can’t turn the emotional switch off when I encounter tragedy. It comes with the job, but it’s something that we all carry with us.”

After realizing Covid was here to stay, I had to get creative to keep my business afloat for my family, team and guests. With so much on the line, I knew I had to pivot to make things work and quite literally survive.” Since then, they have expanded into catering, private events, weddings, bourbon tastings and more. “Whatever it takes, we’re willing to do,” she says. “We hope to be opening more locations in 2023.”

LESLIE BILBREY OWNER OF LOVE LIGHTLY HANDMADE JEWELRY “I’m passionate about the jewelry I create, because I’m telling someone’s story with each hand-stamped letter. It’s amazing how something so small can carry such meaning,” says Leslie of Love Lightly Handmade Jewelry. Each piece of jewelry she makes is as unique as the story behind it—whether it’s a story of courage, love, grief, or just something to express someone’s personality. Leslie enjoys the experience of setting up at festivals and markets, and looks forward to interacting with the community. She says, “It’s great to hear the stories first-hand, and be able to create something together. People ask for everything from song lyrics, encouraging words and bible verses, to bits of wisdom that their grandpa used to say. I’ve even made jewelry from a broken piece of an heirloom. You never know what might be meaningful to someone else, and I love to be a part of bringing that to life.”

But if they do those things, not only will they keep their integrity, they’ll also make a difference.”

Love, Covid, Heartbreak, and a Wedding BY TAYLOR RILEY • PHOTOS BY TWO HEARTS MEDIA
A Louisville couple went from strangers to friends, to partners before their “Garden Love Story”-themed wedding in September. JaNae Martin-Thornton and Troy Thornton had an emotional journey to the altar, including a death in the family from Covid-19 mere weeks before the big day. JaNae and Troy were both born and raised in Louisville; the groom, a machinist, has deep family roots in the historic Smoketown Neighborhood, and the bride is a proud Louisville Central High School and University of Louisville alum. The couple met a few times before they had a love connection; they were friends first, evolving into partners and then “soulmates that we could never leave behind,” JaNae, a legal administrator, says. The couple was one of the first to book their venue, the Waterfront Botanical Gardens, for a wedding–they chose it standing in a construction zone at the site, but as it moved forward, the venue became “absolutely everything we envisioned,” says Janae. “We could not have asked for a more breathtaking and pristine venue: The thousands of flowers, the waterfalls, the gardens, the butterflies and colors. It fits magically with our Garden Love Story theme.” The theme incorporated floral, romantic, and modern hues of sangria, berries, magenta and blush. The wedding did not go on without a hitch, unfortunately. The grandmother of the bride passed away from Covid-19 a few weeks before the wedding, marring a beautiful occasion with heartache and incorrigible grief. “My grandmother, Cecelia Jones, was nothing short of amazing,” JaNae says. “She was a leader in our community, full of wisdom and joy. She was beautiful in every sense.” Cecelia had a hand in the marriage leading up to her death; when the couple was engaged on New Year’s Day 2020, Cecelia led a prayer to the family and even picked out JaNae’s dress for the ceremony. Jumping the Broom is an age-old African-American wedding ceremony tradition that JaNae and Troy performed during their nuptials. Cecelia was assigned but never finished making the broom for the couple, although she said she was working on it before her death. The bride looked everywhere inside and outside her grandmother’s home for the handmade broom. “It breaks my heart that I couldn’t find it,” she says. “It’s missing,

just like the gaping loss that I feel when I think of her.” The bride carried on and made the broom from materials found in her grandmother’s garden and her art supplies. “That broom means the world to us,” she says. “It is pieces of her and it is a culmination of our love, pieced together and rooted in faith and a persistence to keep going, even through grief, heartbreak and loss.”
Other favorite moments from the ceremony included the bride’s captivating entrance to Ave Marie, In Prelude C Major played by renowned and local violinist Keith Cook. “The beautiful sounds accompanied by the sounds of the waterfall, that set the backdrop to the ceremony, still give us chills,” she says, mentioning the groom cried for the majority of the ceremony.

Two memorial chairs were created for the bride’s father, CPL United States Marine Corp. James R. Breckenridge, Sr., and for the bride’s grandmother. The garden incorporated hundreds of flowers blowing in the September evening breeze, and sparkling water fountains gave an ambiance that was described by the bride as “enchanting.” During the reception, a slideshow was shown with personal well-wishes from the couple’s closest family and friends. “This was absolutely the funniest part of the night,” she says. “Some of the videos were hilarious and the words expressed will forever be in our hearts.” From start to finish, the couple’s day was everything they hoped and prayed for. JaNae says the guest experience was what mattered most to them. “That our guests were able to come together, in a post-vaccine but still very real pandemic, and celebrate our love story was all that mattered in our eyes,” she says. “That night, we just couldn’t stop talking about the beauty of the ceremony and the epic party that followed.”

JaNae lends her advice to other couples planning their day, saying they should work together during the process, as she did with Troy. “It is important to assign tasks to (each) spouse, and to get their opinion every step of the way, no matter how big or small, that way, the day is equally special to both parties, and it is truly a joint effort,” she says. “It means that much more when it is done that way.” Dedicated to the memory of MS. We offer group exercise classes, personal training, pilates training, aquatics classes and aquatic therapy, weight loss classes (our HMR program), physical therapy, cycling studio, center cafe, childcare, oasis spa and more. The possibilities are endless when it comes to satisfying your needs and wants here at Milestone. Take the first step to staying active daily. The hardest part is getting out of bed and proceeding to the gym. Once your foot is in the door, the wearisome part is over. Engage in an activity that you truly enjoy at the gym. Ride a bike and watch your favorite television show at the same time. Glide on the elliptical and listen to your favorite audiobook at the same time. Take a group exercise class in a social setting and make new friends this year. It is so easy to head home after a long day at work and sit on the couch. Prepare ahead of time and pack a gym bag; put it in your car and head to the gym to burn those calories and release some steam! Your body will soon become acclimated and crave a daily workout. Calories will be burned, cholesterol will lower, stress will be released, and patience and perseverance will lead to success. Treat yourself to a relaxing massage, facial, or pedicure at our Oasis Spa. The ambience when you walk through the doors is pure relaxation. Releasing muscle tension, increasing endorphins, and blood circulation can transform a stressful day into a tranquill, restful day ahead. Finding the right balance between workout and recovery is important. I love the expressions “work hard, play hard” and “work hard, rest harder.” Give it your all when it comes to passion, life, job, family, and exercise, but also do not forget to turn off your mind and body with meditation and relaxation. Recharge your battery at the end of the day.

BEAUTY
The winter chill is here and that means it’s time to really focus on our skin and keeping it fresh and moisturized during the cold months ahead. While we love to put on a gorgeous makeup look, it’s equally important to make sure that we’re treating the skin under the makeup with extra care this season to avoid chapping and chafing. The right cleansers, moisturizers, and primers should become your best friend. Here are some of our favorites!

CLEANSERS MOISTURIZERS
Keeping your skin clean before you start and end your day is one of the most important things a woman can do.
Hydrating the skin is super important, especially during the winter months. Prepping the face with a moisturizer helps keep the skin hydrated all day long against those chilled winds.
You have to allow your skin to breathe and rest before it's next shining moment!
PRIMERS
Before any makeup look, it’s important to always start with the right primer to protect the skin and keep it hydrated during the winter months.

The Village Anchor New Zealand Elk Chili has been served at The Village Anchor and Sea Hag Pub in Anchorage, Kentucky, since the day they opened in May 2010. A staple branded item at The Village Anchor, the Elk Chili has received many local awards and continues to be the subject of much local and national media. In addition to the thousands of cups and bowls of Elk Chili sold at The Village Anchor, the local “non-local” chili has found its way onto burgers, nachos, hot dogs, and many other featured items at The Village Anchor and Sea Hag Pub. On the earliest menus back in 2010, the famous Sea Hag “Hag Bag” - an open bag of Fritos topped with elk chili, sour cream, and chives - continues to be a very popular appetizer and children’s menu offering at the restaurant. The New Zealand elk that serves as the primary ingredient in The Village Anchor’s chili comes from Broadleaf Game Farm, a specialty game farm in Nebraska. The Village Anchor’s Elk Chili is made with elk, beef, and chorizo. Visit villageanchor.com. Follow TheVillageAnchor on Facebook and @villageanchor on Instagram.

Billy’s Chili & Sandwiches Bill Byrd’s chili was so beloved by his family that his partner Melinda encouraged him to enter chili competitions. He just kept winning. They sold all their wedding photography business equipment to open Billy’s Chili & Sandwiches at Logan Street Market. Service began in October 2019 with a folding table and two Instant Pots® in the fresh air market before opening in the current indoor location. Billy’s Chili offers Meat and Vegan options. They use quality steak, ground chuck, chorizo, beans, and tomato for the Meat Chili, and the Vegan Chili features Louisville Vegan Jerky, lentils, beans, veggies, tomatoes, spices. Four Pegs Smokehouse & Bar When Four Pegs Smokehouse & Bar leveled up its brisket chili recipe for Louisville’s Great Chili Cook Off in 2019, it was first in the event’s history to score both the Judges’ and People’s Choice Awards in the same year. After taking home the trophies, the new chili was a no-brainer to make the menu. Four Pegs has since won four (and was runner-up in several) 2021 LEO Readers’ Choice Awards, including Best Chili, which Owner Chris Williams describes as “midwestern-style” with beans but no noodles. He smokes all the chili elements, “even the tomatoes.” Four Pegs serves the Brisket, Chorizo, and Pork Belly Burnt End Chili with oyster crackers and shredded cheddar jack cheese. The award-winning chili tops dipper fries for a Chili Cheese Fries starter and is available for carryout by the quart. The Black-owned, BBQ-centric establishment also features craft beer and cocktails. Chris recommends a dark beer or nitro on tap paired with your chili for a “complete hug.” Last month, Four Pegs partnered with Six Forks Burger Co. to collect tornado relief supplies for Mayfield, Kentucky. They also donated $1 for every beer sold during their Falls City Tap Takeover to Governor Beshear’s Team Western Kentucky Tornado Relief Fund. Four Pegs hosts an Old-School Hip Hop Hangover Brunch with a DJ and $2 mimosas each New Year’s Day. Visit fourpegs.net and follow @fourpegsbeerlounge on Facebook and @four_pegs on Instagram.
Frank’s Deli Meats & Produce Frank Tooley opened Frank’s Deli Meats & Produce on Preston Highway in 1979. Frank’s is famous for chili in addition to $5 deli sandwiches piled high with a half-pound of high-quality meats like ham, turkey, roast beef, and corned beef. “It’s like the Soup Nazi on ‘Seinfeld’ in here,” says son and Co-Owner Travis Tooley. “We have 600 to 700 people through our doors every day.” Travis describes Frank’s chili as Cincinnati-style for its inclusion of noodles, but the spice mixture is more generally midwestern in flavor. Ground chuck is trimmed and ground fresh in-house for Mom’s recipe, which also calls for chili beans, onions, and green peppers. Frank’s Deli goes through 100-120 gallons of chili each day. The chili is available in 12, 16, and 32-ounce sizes and on a $5 chili dog. For $3 more, add two sides. Choose from macaroni salad, three kinds of potato salad, coleslaw, pasta salad, cucumber salad, and baked beans. While you’re in, pick up some Southern favorites like country ham, dixie loaf, and pimento cheese. Frank’s market offers farm-fresh meats and produce, homemade preservative-free sausages, snacks, desserts, and more. Full-service and drop-off catering are available for your next family gathering, party, or work function. Visit franksmeatandproduce.com for more information. Follow @franksmeatproduce on Facebook.
Check’s Cafe A family-owned Schnitzelburg institution, Check’s Cafe has served “classic American bites and hearty German favorites,” including their signature chili, since 1944. Third-generation owner/operator John Murrow describes Check’s Famous Chili as “Louisville-style,” possibly originated by his paternal grandmother Mary Murrow. The savory tomato-based chili includes 81/19 ground beef, beans, and comes with or without spaghetti noodles. Some suggested toppings are cheese, onions, jalapenos, and sour cream. Check’s Cafe is one of Louisville’s longest continuously-operating bar and grill restaurants. John is also fairly confident they have served more chili than any oth-
er place in town. As well as by the bowlful, Check’s Famous Chili is available on Check’s Chili Cheese Fries and Check’s Chili Cheese Dog. The chili has also been known to appear in a chili cheeseburger over the years. Known for “quality food, strong drink, excellent service, and amazing prices,” Check’s Cafe has been a neighborhood tradition for nearly 80 years. The lively atmosphere, well-stocked bar, and local comfort food favorites menu attract a loyal all-ages clientele. Check’s hosts live music and live sports on TV (Louisville Cardinals especially!) and is open for dine-in, carryout, curbside pickup, and delivery. ASK OUR EXPERT There are many financial advisors in the marketplace. Why work with ETFCU Financial Group? We believe each person we work with is unique and should have an investment strategy tailored to their specific goals and needs. Our primary job is to educate our clients, making them a part of the strategy. Unlike many firms, we do not have minimum investment requirements. We believe each person, regardless of asset size, deserves the investment of our time to help them prepare and plan for their future. While many investment firms have implemented an annual asset based fee structure for retirement accounts, we choose not to go that direction. We pride ourselves in transparency, and the conversation of fees is no different. We will cover whether fees and expenses are applicable to your investments before you make any decision or commitment. We don’t believe in a one size fits all approach. With your firm located in a credit union, do you work only with credit union members?
No, we are able to help credit union members and non-members alike. Our philosophy is always aligned with the spirit of the credit union mission, which is first and foremost putting your needs first. We assist a wide variety of people -- from those just starting a savings plan, to those with sizable assets looking for more sophisticated/complex financial advice, and everyone in between. 98 TOPS LOUISVILLE | january 2022

Woman’s Club of Louisville BY KATHIE STAMPS • COURTESY PHOTOS
The Woman’s Club of Louisville (WCL) was organized on March 1, 1890, as a woman’s volunteer organization. Members were involved with civic, cultural and community services by promoting child labor laws, education and literacy, equal property rights and women’s suffrage. In 1921 the club established another nonprofit, the Younger Woman’s Club of Louisville. Today, both civic organizations are active in the community. The Woman’s Club of Louisville empowers women, promotes education and public health, and supports other charities in the Louisville area. “Join us!” said Trudy Wheeler, WCL president. “We’re a vibrant community of over 500 women and always eager to welcome new members.” The club offers Wednesday Luncheon Programs, featuring entertaining and informative presentations from local community leaders, creative artists and local entrepreneurs. In Old Louisville, by Central Park, the Woman’s Club of Louisville has a historic clubhouse with a 688-seat theatre. The beaux arts-style building opened almost a century ago in 1923 and is available to rent for corporate events and meetings, luncheons and teas, cocktail receptions and other special events. A “little library” opened in December by the clubhouse parking lot to serve the Old Louisville neighborhood. Adjacent to the clubhouse is the three-story Victorian-style Frazier House, with space for groups up to 130 people. A garden in the rear of the property connects it to Carriage Trade Consignment Store.

The Woman’s Club of Louisville’s 84th annual No-Jury Art Show will be held March 16-23. “Local artists are invited to enter and compete for over $1,000 in awards,” Trudy said. April 1-3, the club’s drama committee presents the play “Love, Loss and What I Wore.” Trudy’s “President’s Initiative” this year is “a challenge to each of our 11 committees to build a relationship with nonprofits in our surrounding area,” she said. These hyperlocal charities include the Backside Learning Center, Blessings in a Backpack, Christian Care Community Center, Engelhard Elementary School, Heuser Hearing and Learning Academy, and Uniting Partners for Women and Children, among others. On May 11, the Community Leadership Luncheon celebrates these community relationships. FOR INFORMATION ON MEMBERSHIP, EVENTS AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES, VISIT WWW.WCLOUISVILLE.ORG.

Freweini Mebrahtu Brings Dignity to All BY SHAUNTIONNE MOSLEY • PHOTO BY DICK ARNSPIGER
I kept a light jacket in my locker just in case. Heavy flows and high school don’t go together, and the last thing I needed was for my uniformed, khaki pants to reveal a bloodstain. Harmful stigmas and taboos surrounding menstruation can impact the comfort and self-esteem for many around the world. For that and many other reasons, the fight for just menstruation policies is a current social and political topic in the United States. A little over 7,000 miles away from Kentucky however, girls in rural areas of Ethiopia have missed school, or have completely dropped out due to their periods. It’s a tragedy that chemical engineer and inventor, Freweini Mebrahtu, has battled against; and her dedication awarded her the 2019 CNN Hero of the Year award. Born in Ethiopia, Mebrahtu received her chemical engineering degree in the United States at Prairie View A&M University. In a CNN interview she recalls a time from her childhood where she had a menstrual accident during class. Her feelings of fear and shame then resonate with many today. 58% of women have felt a sense of embarrassment simply because they were on their period. This sense of societal shame surrounding periods has a deep history that can be found even in various religious texts and old myths. The traditional Jewish word niddah, is a term from the Old Testament that means, "one who is excluded" or "expelled.” It is used to describe women who are menstruating. In some Jewish religions, men are forbidden to engage in sexual relations with their wife during their menstrual cycle, or until the wife immerses herself in the water of mikveh for purification. The ancient Roman philosopher, Pliny the Elder, believed that women on their periods were a walking case of doom. Even going as far as believing that menstruating women dimmed the brightness of mirrors and were the cause of drought and the sterilization of seeds.
102 TOPS LOUISVILLE | january 2022
Lacking the proper feminie hygiene products has caused women and girls, including Mebrahtu growing up in Ethiopia, to use items like rags to tend to their menstruation cycle. Nearly 75% of Ethiopian women and girls don’t have access to menstrual supplies. This harsh reality prompted Mebrahtu to invent and patent a reusable sanitary pad in 2005. These easy to wash, environmentally friendly pads can last up to two years with proper care and have changed the lives of women and girls in Ethiopia and beyond. More than 80% of the pads are sold to non-governmental organizations that distribute them for free. The inventor has joined forces with Mekelle University and Dignity Period to further end period shaming and poverty. She’s even made a difference here in the city of Louisville! SOS International is a local non-profit that improves local and global health by redistributing medical supplies and equipment to low income neighborhoods in Louisville, and impoverished countries throughout the world. This month it was announced that Mebrahtu would be the Humanitarian Ambassador of SOS and would be working side-by-side with volunteer groups leading special projects, and fulfilling speaking engagements to further the organization's mission. This collaboration began organically from a phone call to SOS by the inventor herself. After hearing about the group's work in her home country of Ethiopia, Mebrahtu personally called and asked how to get involved. Her influence could be significantly beneficial in Louisville. The 6% sales tax in Kentucky on feminine hygiene products (also known as the “pink tax”) would end if the legislation presented by State Rep. Attica Scott (D- Louisville) passes. Kentucky is the 4th poorest state in the United States and this tax can significantly hurt the pockets of those living paycheck to paycheck. The point behind the bill closely matches the values of Mebrahtu as well. "We need them (hygiene items) for our health. Those are fundamental, so let's take those taxes off those products and make life a little easier for women and girls in Kentucky," Scott explained when discussing the bill. With many families supporting the bill, along with support of a woman who is changing the way we see menstrual cycles, we could see significant change for those with periods in the state of Kentucky. Change that includes equality, proper education, and respect in regards to feminine hygiene. Something Freweini Mebrahtu believes we all deserve. When accepting the 2019 CNN Hero of the Year award, this incredible recipient shared her platform and honor with the women of the world: “This is for all the girls and women everywhere. Dignity for all. Dignity for all girls, finally!”
This is for all the girls and women everywhere. Dignity for all. Dignity for all girls, finally!” TOPS LOUISVILLE | january 2022 103

The dawn of a new year often brings a renewed focus on our health and wellbeing. In 2022, the Department of Veterans Affairs will focus more on providing Veterans assistance with their New Year’s Resolution! Now, Veterans enrolled in VA can take part in an exciting new comprehensive health care plan that wraps its arms around their whole being, not just their physical self. It’s called Whole Health and it’s the most comprehensive program to date to serve our Heroes Whole Health is a cutting-edge approach to health care that supports a Veteran’s health and well-being. This means more emphasis on the individual Veteran as a person not just as a patient, in order to develop a personalized health plan based on their individual values, needs, and goals. In recent years, VA has been offering practices such as acupuncture, yoga, tai chi, clinical hypnosis, biofeedback, and more. Now, with Whole Health, Veterans can expect to receive even more specialized care. Rhonda Scott, an Army Veteran and RN Whole Health Coordinator at the Louisville VA Medical Center is passionate about this new approach. “It empowers Veterans. It lets Veterans decide what is it that they want for their health and what matters to them, instead of what's the matter with you.” Healthcare is more than just disease, illness and injuries. Whole Health, and its eight pillars not only looks at the Veteran’s physical health and well-being, but also their personal values. “We're also taking into consideration the values of the individual Veteran. It's not their provider's values or the VA, but it's their values. We also focus on what we call “self-

Giving College Students a Chance at the ‘American Dream’ December 1, 2021 By: Louis R. Straub, II – President of Independence Bank The American dream means many things to different people. But what unites this ideology is an overarching manifestation of opportunity; being able to achieve your goals. For many, the greatest gift to achieve your dream is a college education. Unfortunately, for some, a college education is beyond their reach. Thanks to the generosity and vision of Charles A. Reid, founding partner of Independence Bank, the Bank has cumulatively provided over $1 million in college scholarships, for more than a decade. Each year, Independence Bank invites high school seniors to apply for a scholarship

program that seeks to be the difference in their lives. While grades and extracurricular activities are considered, emphasis is also placed on looking at the whole student, taking into consideration their financial need and their aspirations. In doing so, Independence Bank is able to award dollars to recipients who may be overlooked based solely on GPA and class rank. Independence Bank’s scholarship program is only a small piece of the puzzle that provides students with the opportunity and resources to achieve their goals. We are grateful for the partners we have in the colleges and universities here in the Commonwealth that seek to ensure that financial burden does not prevent any student from attending a college or trade school.
