YOU a ye CARDIO MATTERS
So many people think of exercise as a means to an end: work out more and you will (probably, hopefully) lose weight, or maybe get super cut arms. But the role of cardio in our lives is far more important than that.
THE BENEFITS
ed ad :
Cardiovascular exercise – also often referred to as “aerobic” exercise – gets your heart rate up for an extended period of time. This ensures you are breathing faster than you do at rest. That means more oxygen in your blood, being pumped through your body, which can decrease your risk of stroke, reduce the signs of aging and adapt your muscles to movement. Cardio offers a bevy of benefits to your heart, circulation and lung function, including potentially decreasing your blood pressure, improving cholesterol levels and reducing overall shortness of breath. Studies show that getting enough cardio can potentially protect your brain from developing Alzheimer’s Disease, increase your lifespan and fight osteoperosis. Weight loss and a more trim physique can be a side effect, but the benefits to your overall health are so much more important.
HOW MUCH?
Every step you take – every minute you spend not sitting – has a benefit to your overall health. But according to the American Heart Association, at least 150 minutes of moderate cardio or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise each week is optimal for adults; even better if you make it a combination of the two.
To know if you’re getting the full benefits of your activity, monitor your heart rate and ensure that you’re staying in your target heart rate zone. Have a conversation with your doctor about whether cardio is right for you and what your optimal target heart rate should be.
HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN
You needn’t scramble for a gym membership. While traditional gyms work wonders for many people, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Instead, explore some activities that you enjoy, such as gardening or social dancing. Spread the activities out throughout your week, but keep your times consistent so it becomes a natural part of your routine.
For many folks, exercise will never be something they’d call fun, even if they are doing activities they prefer. If that’s you, try learning into the “me time” aspect of this self-care. While you get your cardio on, try listening to a murder podcast, watching your favorite guilty pleasure show or listening to an uplifting workout playlist. Set rewards for yourself for hitting milestones and share your progress with friends to stay accountable.

Your health needs change as you age. While that’s pretty obvious to all of us, it can still be hard to know which aspects of your health routine may need tweaking as you reach certain milestones. What vitamins should you take at 30 that you weren’t taking a decade ago? When you hit 60, which health screenings should you be tackling yearly?
These concerns should be part of an ongoing conversation with your healthcare team. Your primary care provider should help guide your healthcare choices and decisions through the decades of your life. That said, this checklist can help you know which topics to bring up at your annual exam (which should start in your 20s or 30s, by the way). Remember that this list builds on itself; just because you’ve aged up a decade doesn’t mean you can skip out on all the healthy habits you’ve built!
IN YOUR 20S:
Every three years: pap smear and/or HPV screening
Every six months: dental checkup
Monthly: at-home breast exams and testicular exams
Every 10 years: tetanus booster
STI screening, with a frequency as discussed with your doctor
Annual skin checks to search for abnormalities and skin cancer
Use a daily sunscreen to protect your skin and prevent early signs of aging!
Get an eye exam every few years to check for certain conditions; more often if you need glasses, wear contacts or notice changes in your eyesight.
If you’re a woman who plans to have children in the near future, discuss your plan with your ob/gyn. Adjust your contraceptives, vitamin intake/diet and lifestyle according to their recommendations.
EMBRACE YOUR AGE:
The time is always right to live boldly. That said, there’s no time better to “live out loud” than your 20s! This decade is all about learning lessons and trying new things. You’re setting out the building blocks of your life ahead, from your career to friendships, personal style and habits. Make sure you’re building an authentic life that you want to live.
IN YOUR 30S:
Every year: Annual checkup to evaluate your blood pressure and overall well being
Every few years: cholesterol test (more often if you are at risk of certain cardiovascular conditions)
If you have certain genetic markers, begin breast cancer screenings. This is part of a longer conversation with your health care team.
If you don’t already, try adding weight lifting or resistance training to your fitness routine to prevent loss of muscle mass. Adjust your skincare routine to prevent or correct fi ne lines and increase overall brightness.
If you are planning to have children in your 30s, discuss your plans with your doctor.
Your fitness routine in your 30s should focus on building a strong core. You also want to follow the American Heart Association’s recommendations for your cardiovascular health (get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity with moderate muscle-strengthening activity at least twice a week).
EMBRACE YOUR AGE:
This decade is all about getting to know yourself better. Learn to listen to your intuition and know your worth. Mindfulness, gratitude and acceptance will help you navigate the changes that your 30s can bring. Don’t worry about what other people are doing; live your life to the fullest in the way that you want to live it.
IN YOUR 40S:
IN YOUR 50S:
Mammograms according to your doctor’s recommendation. Diabetes screening if you have certain risk factors
Discuss family history for prostate and/or colon cancer with your doctor to determine if screenings are appropriate.
Discuss menopause with your doctor and make a game plan for this transition.
Add collagen powder to your diet to help preserve your skin’s elasticity.
Adjust your diet according to your doctor’s recommendations. Noticing some hair loss? In addition to genetic predisposition, your hair loss could be caused by certain conditions, so it’s important to discuss this with your doctor – and to address it. Finding it harder to lose weight? Talk to your healthcare team, including a hormone specialist, about what options may make sense for you.
EMBRACE YOUR AGE:
You are fully within your own skin in your 40s, so celebrate your unique, wonderful self! Take the time to build habits that reward your body, spirit and mind for all the work you’ve done and prepare it for the life ahead of you. Firm up your good habits and jettison the bad ones. (Taking a look at your 401k contributions couldn’t hurt.)
Every two years: mammogram and/or breast MRI
Every few years: colon cancer screening
Get regular blood screenings to check your kidney health, iron levels and other important health markers.
Discuss lung cancer screenings with your doctor, especially if you are a current/former smoker or have a family history of lung cancer.
If you don’t already use daily moisturizers (face and body), add those to your skincare routine now. If you’re still noticing dry skin, consider fi nding a moisturizer that works better for your needs.
Going gray? Your hair’s texture is probably quite different than before. Adjust your haircare routine accordingly.
Talk to your doctor about your sexual health. This decade can bring on a lot of changes in this department, so don’t be embarrassed to ask!
EMBRACE YOUR AGE:
This is a time for expanding your horizons. Learn as much as you can, travel more, search out new experiences and try your hand at new hobbies. Be open to change and embrace what comes with open arms. Reward yourself for the years you’ve lived by treating yourself to luxury skincare and health products, if possible.
IN YOUR 60S:
Every year: annual eye exams to screen for certain eye conditions and to check your vision, which will change frequently as you age
Discuss bone density testing with your doctor, especially if you are a woman.
Beginning at age 65, get your pneumonia vaccines.
Beginning at age 65, discuss with your doctor whether pap smears and other frequent screenings are needed going forward.
Adjust your diet according to your doctor’s recommendations. You may want to increase your fiber intake.
THOSE 70+:
Make new friends. You’re most likely at a new phase in your life. Developing friendships and forming new connections at this stage is especially important to your well being!
Get active in new, fun ways to encourage you to stay in the habit.
EMBRACE YOUR AGE:
This can be the start of your second chapter. Think about what opportunities you’d like to explore and chase them. Ensure that you’re surrounded by people, things and experiences that bring you fulfi llment and joy. Let go of bitterness, regret, negativity or doubt; you are an amazing human, and you know exactly who you are. So live it!
Every year: Get your flu shot
Every two years: colon and bowel cancer screenings
Adjust your fitness routine to your physical condition, bearing in mind your joint health. You may need to pay special attention to your balance and the muscles that help support your stability.
Adjust your diet per your health care team’s recommendations. Talk to your doctor about keeping your mind active.
Make regular appointments to see your primary care physician per their recommendations. Keep a list of your concerns between visits to ensure you can discuss each issue. Topics that should be regularly discussed include your heart health, overall mood, memory, bowel health, hearing, fall risk and regular screenings. Your doctor may suggest stopping certain screenings and increasing the frequency of others.
EMBRACE YOUR AGE:
Enjoy your one, amazing life! Take time to appreciate the beauty in the world. Experience all the culture that central Kentucky has to offer. Go out of your way to spread kindness wherever you go. Tell yourself that you are wonderful and that you contribute wonderful things to the world… because it’s true!
MEDICINE CABINET Build e Perfect
You’ve tried the salt water rinse, the essential oils, and honey tea concoction, but sometimes natural remedies don’t quite do the trick.
Whether for you, your kiddo, or your houseguest, rely on these medicine cabinet goodies and fi rst aid essentials for convenient athome relief and peace of mind!
by Erin OliverPAIN RELIEF:
Ask any Medical professional, and they'll likely recommend a few basic over-the-counter solutions for pain relief. If you're experiencing a headache, fever, or other mild pain, opt for acetaminophen (aka Tylenol). If your symptoms are primarily from the neck down or are consistent with chronic pain or related to an injury, look for ibuprofen (aka Advil). Many doctors note that taking ibuprofen for a stomachache can often make symptoms worse, and you should always be cognisant of how much of any of these drugs you take in a 24-hour window.
If you have little ones around, Children's Motrin is an easy way to make sure safe doses are being administered,
because pill cutters are kind of a pain. If you're experiencing mild pains, try alternating between acetaminophen and ibuprofen to keep your organs a bit happier.
If medication-free pain relief is what you seek, we love reusable options for cold and heat therapy. A screw-top, refi llable cold compress is perfect in a pinch if you need a flexible ice pack. We also case headache symptoms start to take over. If you have aches and pains, soft heating packs are perfect. We love the Warmies® line, since their fuzzy heating packs are perfect for keeping little ones content and look oh-so cute.
Refi llable Nasal Decongestant and Allergy Relief Medications (Available at Cabinet Health)
COLD MEDICINES:
Whether you have an annoying case of the sniffles or a cold that just won't quit, it can be hard to fi nd relief that really works. According to The Portland Clinic, you can easily seek out specific ingredients to target your symptoms.
If you're plagued by congestion, look for a decongestant— phenylephrine is the most common. Experiencing a cough? Look for a cough suppressant—usually dextromethorphan. If a product has “DM” after its name, that means it contains dextromethorphan. Mucus can be solved with an expectorant, such as guaifenesin. And yes, you can use a suppressant and an expectorant at the same time—one decreases the cough reflex, while the other loosens mucus so coughing is more productive.
Sniffles and/or postnasal drip can be subdued with an antihistamine. However, be aware that some may cause drowsiness, including doxylamine and diphenhydramine (looking at you, Benadryl). A sore throat can be relieved with acetaminophen or ibuprofen, or, if this is your only symptom, lozenges or sprays that contain menthol or benzocaine are good alternatives.
When it comes to purchasing these medications, we recommend Cabinet products, since they are often cheaper than name-brand products without sacrificing quality or efficacy. We also love their stackable, glass bottles and refi llable option.
FIRST AID:
Sure, more generic options for fi rst aid care exist, but we can't help ourselves with these cute options! Whether you're suffering from a mild sunburn or need to cover up a cut, we've got you covered with these adorable picks!

Dr. Justin Coleman

After graduating, Coleman began working at a small clinic in Mt Sterling, which he later bought in 2017 and opened Bluegrass Vision Group. Despite the timing of the pandemic, Coleman was able to open a second office in Morehead in 2020, and later the Hamburg Vision Center in 2023.
Along with Dr. Makisha Maggard, BVG’s primary optometrist with 17 years of clinical experience, Coleman has been able to provide his patients with wonderful care, a large selection of stylish glasses, and family-centric, compassionate eye care. “We want everyone to feel like they were properly cared for and that their glasses are a perfect compliment to their own individual style,” explains Coleman.
The team at BVG works hard to provide thorough care for the whole family, from children as young as 6 months all the way to 100+ years old. “On top of the ocular conditions we manage, we also manage specialty concerns including after-cataract care, scleral lens fits, childhood vision development/ special needs evaluations, and more.

Smile Comfortably with the friendly professionals at Bluegrass Periodontics & Implant Dentistry
The health of your teeth, gums, and surrounding tissues is an essential building block to your overall well-being and self-esteem. That’s why having a good relationship with outstanding periodontal professionals like the team at Bluegrass Periodontics & Implant Dentistry is so important.
Periodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, as well as the process of replacing teeth with dental implants. Periodontists receive up to three years of additional, specialized training in treating periodontal disease and other conditions. The team at Bluegrass Periodontics is committed to doing everything they can to heal your pain, restore your health, and improve your smile.
History of the Practice
Elliot D. Neuman, DMD, MS and Whitney Neuman, RDH are the husband-wife team behind Bluegrass Periodontics. All of their parents were dental professionals, which led the couple to their careers in oral care. Both Elliot and Whitney attended the University of Kentucky for their undergraduate degrees. Elliot attended the UK College of Dentistry and did his periodontics residency there. Whitney pursued her degree in Dental Hygiene at BCTC.
Elliot joined his father’s private dental practice in 2014 and became the owner in 2017. Now known as Bluegrass Periodontics, this practice has been helping central Kentucky smile brightly for over 40 years and has a trusted reputation in the area.
Elliot is passionate about helping the next generations of oral health professionals get a solid start. He helps cover the student clinic at the UK College of Dentistry and UKCD Division of Periodontology. Elliot also enjoys
serving as a guest lecturer at the BCTC Dental Hygiene Clinic. “I enjoy sharing my time and talent with students so that they may have a better understanding of what it is like working in periodontics and private practice,” he explains.
Whitney has practiced dental hygiene since 2010. “I had occasionally filled in at Bluegrass Periodontics over the years but officially joined the team last summer and helped rebrand and create a new vision for the practice,” she explains. She helped guide the build-out of their new office in Hamburg, which opened in February off Sir Barton Way. The new facility boasts a beautiful waiting room, six private treatment suites, a consultation room, and a fully equipped sterilization center and lab. Sherry Feeney with Forecast Interiors helped pull the project together and finalize the finishing touches on the décor and ambiance of the new space.
Whitney took on the role of Human Resource Director and is involved in training, development, and implementation of systems and protocols to enhance patient care and overall experience. “You are only as good as your team,” she says, “and we are very proud of the talented group of people we have assembled over the years.”
The office has three Expanded Duties Dental Assistants, all specifically trained in surgical techniques, including IV and CPR certification: Kate, Surgical Assistant & Clinical Manager; Chelsea, Surgical Assistant & Compliance Manager; and Olivia, Surgical Assistant & Marketing Director. Their two front office personnel include Lauren, Treatment Coordinator & Operations Manager, and Natalie, New Patient & Hygiene Coordinator. They also have an ADA-certified emotional support dog, Toby, who is the practice’s “Patient Comfort Canine” and the unofficial team mascot (according to him!)
Services Provided
Bluegrass Periodontics offers a wide range of services. They offer dental cleanings and routine hygiene visits, in addition to gum disease treatment. The practice specializes in gum grafting, bone grafting, extractions, implants, cosmetic crown lengthening (also known as a “gummy smile” correction), “Teeth-in-a-Day” (implantretained dentures) and other periodontal care.
Elliot offers PRF dentistry for tooth extractions, bone grafts, oral surgery, and implants. “We can use plateletrich fibrin (PRF) to aid in your healing process so you can have a better experience even after you leave the office,” he explains. PRF dentistry involves a blood draw to collect the platelets, which are then applied to affected tissues. This type of care can decrease surgical pain, speed healing, and improve the strength of the bones’ direct structural and functional connection to implants.
Next-Level Care
Bluegrass Periodontics believes in setting a new standard of patient care. Beyond offering innovative treatments, they want every moment of the experience to be as comfortable as possible. That’s why, in addition to friendly, professional care, they offer a number of amenities that help each patient feel their best. From neck and lumbar support pillows to blankets and eye masks, your time in the chair will be made as cozy as possible. They apply desensitizer prior to dental cleanings to make the process more comfortable. A hot steam towel will conclude what will feel like a first-class experience! Bluegrass Periodontics is accepting new patients, and they’re happy to accommodate busy schedules as much as possible. They file all insurances with the exception of Medicaid. They’d love to help you feel comfortable with your smile.

It's always best to stay ahead of your skin and look out for factors that could put you at risk for skin cancer! However, things happen! Your burn may fade, but damage from UV exposure can cause long-lasting effects. Apart from obvious burns and blisters, Yale Medicine notes that these symptoms of sun damage can appear as early as your teenage years:
• Wrinkling
• Pigmentation changes such as age spots, liver spots (solar lentigines) and freckles
• Loss of skin tone (decreased elasticity)
• Rough, uneven skin texture
• Broken capillaries (spider veins), usually around the nose and chest
• Redness and blotchiness
If you recognize any of these symptoms—or just want to check-in on the health of your skin—see a dermatologist right away!

Motherhood is a Mother
You’ve just brought home your beautiful new addition, and suddenly everything learned from parenting books and advice gained from friends and relatives have gone out the window. Don’t panic! Take a deep breath, and consider these simple tips to make this major life change run as smoothly as possible.
By Erin OliverBreastfeeding:
Feeding your new baby is an all day (and night) long commitment, as babies need about 8-12 feedings per day, or 1 feeding every 2-3 hours.
Since these little guys can’t outright say, “I’m hungry!” just yet (that time will come!), look for early signs of hunger to avoid the potential fussiness later:
Lip smacking
Sucking on fi ngers and fi sts
Placing their hands close to their mouths
Do your best to keep feedings consistent. Even if Grandma and Grandpa are watching the baby while you and your partner enjoy a well-deserved date night, have formula or breast milk on hand for them during the allotted time the baby typically eats.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Lots of mamas have trouble breastfeeding, whether you aren’t producing enough milk or it even feels painful. Reach out to your baby’s doctor or a lactation consultant to ensure your baby gets all the necessary nutrients.
Formula isn’t failure! Studies show formula-fed babies can develop just as healthily as those that are strictly breastfed.
While breastfeeding should be your primary option, it is not always realistic or easy.
Dr. Steven Abrams, chairperson of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition says, “No family should ever feel guilty or ashamed for formula feeding. That serves no purpose and is not consistent with what we know about feeding babies.”
Dr. Abrams goes on to explain, “There are differences between breast milk and baby formula, but they have little to do with a child getting the appropriate amount of nutrition. The protein, energy, vitamins, and mineral content of baby formula has been closely regulated since the 1980s. Any baby formula sold is required to meet the same nutritional requirements to meet the needs of growing babies.”
Weaning & Teething:
While breastfeeding is recommended for your baby’s fi rst year of life, many women choose to wean later, as it is up to the mother to determine best timing
When it comes to teething remedies, pediatricians recommend massaging your baby’s gums to ease any discomfort.
Encourage your baby to chew on a refrigerated teething ring made of fi rm rubber.
Hacks for Meal Time:
The last thing your exhausted brain wants to comprehend after having a newborn is crafting dinner. Take advantage of helpers like Instacart and Thrive Market that allow your groceries and wholesome snacks to be delivered to your door.
For those rare days when you have spare moments in the morning to throw some ingredients into the crockpot for dinner, these three recipes are a godsend!

What in a Name?
By Amanda HarperBaby name trends change over time. While Jennifer was popular in the 1970s and 1980s, it doesn’t even make the top thousand baby names today. Those Jennifers’ mothers were probably Lisas, Marys or Lindas – which are basically unheard-of baby names today.
In 2024, parents are incredibly choosy about baby names. If there’s an overarching theme to today’s baby names, it seems to be ensuring that each child has a unique name that gives an immediate, lasting impression. Here are some of the baby name trends that have shown up so far this year.
Unisex Names
Some parents are choosing to keep their baby name options open by looking to what inspires them; not limiting their name choices to any particular gender. This means more parents are reaching for unisex or feminine-leaning names for boys, which is a big switch up from previous years. Names like Harlow, Blair, Jade, Lark, Wren, Carmen, Rue and Izzy are trending for boys.
Very Mature Names
In 2023, a common theme among prospective parents and baby name experts on TikTok was this: “You’re naming an adult, not a baby.” Many baby names from prior years felt a little too “cutesy” for many, feeling more appropriate as baby nicknames than given fi rst names. So what makes a name feel mature? They’re generally the longer version of names that are commonly shortened – think Matthew, Katherine or Georgina. We can also look to vintage names for very “adult” baby names, like Agnes, Dolores, Harold, Lorelai and Winslow.
Vibes and Atmosphere
Many parents are leaning towards stylish names that evoke strong feelings, often with a connection to nature or the heavens. Names like Storm, Aurora, Icelynn, Luna, Lumen, Aire, Skylar, Soleil, Sunny and Cielo are moody and ethereal.
Epic Names
Names from mythology, legends and religion have always been an inspiration for parents, but more and more are reaching to ancient history for baby names. Lyra, Freya, Gaia, Azriel, Athena, Persephone, Leonidas and Avalon are all trending.
Gentle Names
This generation's parents, by and large, subscribe to the “gentle parenting” philosophy, believing in an empathetic, calm style of child-rearing. Interestingly, that trend has resulted in many shorter baby names with soft, calming sounds. Ines, Faye, Alfie, Casper, Willa, Ione, Selah and Rhys all fit this bill.
The Power of “I”
Names that begin or end with i have been on trend for a while and don’t show any sign of slowing down. Isabella, Isaiah, Eli, Ian, Ari, Kai, Joni, Izzy and Caprio are on-trend.
Bridgerton Effect
Names from popular culture have always made their way onto baby name lists. The Bridgerton series has made its mark in the past couple of years, with both characters’ and actors’ names appearing in trending lists. These names include Daphne, Penelope, Phoebe, Violet, Simon, Ruby, Eloise and Charlotte.
For some prospective parents, “all’s fair in love and baby names.” But for most of us, there are unspoken rules regarding what’s acceptable when naming your baby
Don Steal
Prospective parents can be pretty territorial about their baby’s names – well before they’re even born. There’s possibly no greater offense than “stealing” a baby name, even unwittingly. If you’ve ever heard a friend or family member mention a potential baby name, it’s probably best if you consider that name a no-go. While no one “owns” a name, it’s best not to dive into this uncomfortable territory if you can avoid it.
Initially
Check your baby’s initials – including their potential monograms – before deciding on a name. Anthony Simon Smith is a lovely name, but his initials will look unfortunate when embroidered on their onesies.
The Starbucks Test
Gut-check how practical your kid’s name is. Once your kid grows up, are they going to be able to tell their barista their name and get something even remotely close written on the cup? Remember: unique is good, but going too far with quirky spellings or kooky names will only be an uphill struggle for your child. (I also call this the kindergarten test: is your kindergartener going to struggle to spell their own name? If so, throw it out.)
Naming “Rules” Trending Names
GIRLS
Emma, Olivia. Isabella, Ava, Sophia, Emily, Madison, Mia, Hannah, Abigail
Check the Flow
You may love certain names for your future baby, but putting the whole name together might be a little awkward. One way to achieve this is by ensuring that the number of syllables and letters in the first, middle and last names are varied. Another is to look out for vowel or consonant sounds that may blend into one another, like David Daniel Leonard.
Nothing Permanent
Seven percent of parents express regret or doubt about their baby name choice and three percent end up changing it legally. Many more end up relying so much on a nickname that the child’s given name is almost an afterthought. You’re allowed to change your mind! Experts agree that babies generally don’t start responding to their name before about 7 months old. In Kentucky, so long as both parents give consent to the change, it’s a fairly simple process.
FUN FACT:
Did you know that Kentucky is one of the few states that doesn’t have any laws governing baby names?

When Ya Gotta Go...
There are some topics that affect each and every one of us, yet we’re shy to discuss them in public. One of those taboo topics is euphemistically referred to as “staying regular.” Studies say around 4 million people in the US frequently have problems with constipation—to say nothing of the millions more who have occasional “tummy troubles” or “vacation belly”—so there’s no reason to stay secretive about the issue. Many factors play into your bowel movements. We’re here to help you understand what’s causing constipation and what you can do about it.
By Amanda HarperWha's Normal:
Doctors say that “normal” is pretty hard to gauge, as every body is a little different. The frequency of bowel movements isn’t a strong indicator, as it’s perfectly normal to poop anywhere from three times a day to three times a week. Instead, doctors are more concerned with how things go in the bathroom.
TMI waning: Bowel movements should be painless and not require any straining. While poop may change in firmness and color, it should ideally be medium brown and soft to firm. Any sudden, lingering change to your stool or the frequency of your BMs should be noted. Dry, pebbly or difficult-to-pass stool is a sure indicator of constipation, even if you’re going only slightly less frequently than what’s normal for you. Feeling bloated, having stomach pain or feeling like you’re not done going when you go are more symptoms. If you’re concerned about your stool texture or frequency, talk to your doctor. There’s no need to be embarrassed; this is a perfectly normal doctor-patient conversation, and they’d love to help put your mind (and gut) at ease. Remember that changes in bowel movements can be a symptom of other conditions, so it’s an important health conversation to have!
Diet:
You know that what you eat affects your digestion. You’ve heard it said before that Americans routinely don’t get enough fiber in their diets, which contributes to constipation. It’s important to get both kinds of fiber, soluble (found in oats, beans, citrus, carrots and more) and insoluble (found in whole-wheat products, beans and veggies).
However, you may not know that certain food intolerances and allergies can impair digestion, causing either constipation or diarrhea—or sometimes, confusingly, both! For people who suffer from unpredictable digestion, doctors often suggest following a weeks-long elimination diet course. As the name suggests, you slowly eliminate specific potential allergens from your diet over the course of days or weeks, one at a time, and observe the changes.
Hydraion:
Water is absolutely essential to so many life processes, including digestion. Dehydration is one of the most common—and most easily remedied—causes of constipation.
If you’re wondering why, the answer is that your large intestine needs water to keep things moving. If there isn’t enough water in your body to help it along, your intestine will leech water from your food waste. That results in hard stools, which can be difficult and painful to pass.
If you regularly consume alcoholic beverages, it’s important to know how they affect your digestion. Drinks with higher alcohol content tend to result in slower digestion and possibly constipation. Drinks with lower levels of alcohol tend to speed up digestion, leading to diarrhea. However, many people unknowingly have intolerances to wine and beer, which can cause all sorts of unpredictable digestive issues. That’s why it’s crucial to have water between drinks!
Exercise:
Physical activity helps food move through your intestines. Inactivity can slow digestion, resulting in fewer bowel movements. Walking, biking and yoga have all been proven to be helpful in digestion.
If you’re on doctor-ordered bed rest, talk to your healthcare team about what movements might be safe for you to perform. If you’re unable to do so, ask if a fiber supplement or other medication may be advisable to help keep your bowels healthy.
DS-01® Daily Synbiotic (Seed, $49.99)
Hormones:
Stress hormones like cortisol can wreak havoc on the digestive system. Research shows that stress, anxiety and depression can greatly alter your body’s bowel movements. As we all know, stress can also cause some of the lifestyle factors— diet, alcohol consumption, lack of exercise—that cause constipation as well.
The regular fluctuations of premenopausal hormones can cause digestive symptoms. But for menopausal women, constipation is a common complaint; estrogen can help keep cortisol in check, so the decline of estrogen can mean cortisol rises unchecked in your system. The result is a longer digestive process, resulting in stool that is more difficult to pass. Weakened pelvic floor muscles can also be at fault.

Take steps to mitigate your stress. Meditation, yoga and other lifestyle changes can help. But also talk to your doctor and a mental health professional about your stress.
Health Conditions:
There are many health conditions that affect our digestion. It’s obvious that if you’re diagnosed with a gut disorder or viral infection, your bowel movements may not be normal or regular. But what’s less obvious is that a number of conditions affecting muscles and nerves can also cause digestive issues. On top of that, many medications cause changes in how our bodies digest or process food waste—even when those medications have nothing to do with treating our digestive systems. Antihistamines, antacids, antidepressants and even iron supplements can cause constipation. Talk to your doctor about how your overall health and current medications may affect your bowel movements.
Prebiotics & Probiotics:
These products are very much on-trend right now. So what’s the deal? Probiotics contain live microorganisms that can help the “good” bacteria in your gut. Prebiotics act as food for those microflora, and help balance their population. Prebiotics are found in whole grains and produce, including bananas, greens, garlic and soybeans. Probiotics are found in certain cultured and fermented foods, like yogurt, sauerkraut and kimchi.
While research is ongoing regarding the exact role of gut bacteria—and the efficacy of products that contain probiotics and prebiotics—the general consensus seems to be that consuming natural prebiotics and postbiotics is a good thing, as those foods and drinks come with a host of proven health benefits. The jury is still out regarding supplements, but many people swear by them as a way to improve your overall digestive health.
Laxaives:
The medical consensus on laxatives seems to be that you should consult your doctor fi rst. Laxatives can come with some serious health risks, particularly with long-term use. In the short term, they can cause electrolyte imbalances that can leave you feeling worse. Some supplements are marketed as “natural” laxatives, but most work one of four ways: drawing water to the bowels (osmotic), causing muscle contractions (stimulant), bulking agents/stool “softeners” and by coating stools (lubricant). Each comes with its own risks and side effects, though some can cause your body to become dependent on the product.
When to Call a Doctor:
Extreme changes to your bowel habits should raise a red flag. Talk to your doctor if symptoms last more than a week or are causing you pain or discomfort. Seek medical attention if you’re also experiencing abdominal pain, lower back pain, bloody stool, sudden weight loss, vomiting, severe pain, dehydration, fever or black, tar-like or thin stool.
Occasional bouts of constipation or diarrhea are normal. However, it’s always worth talking to your doctor about what’s going on with your body.
Get More Fiber:
Add fruit and veggies to your day. One of the easiest ways to get more fiber without much effort is to slip a few more veggies and fruits into your routine. If you’re making a sandwich, add in some chopped bell peppers or roasted beets, and use guacamole or hummus instead of your usual spread. Add chia seeds or flaxseed to your smoothies or oatmeal. At dinner, add on a veggie side, like coleslaw or broccoli. Stash baggies of pre-cut veggies and fruits in your purse for snacking.
Go for the grain. Swap whole-grain bread, brown rice and whole-wheat pasta into your rotation. If you struggle to eat breakfast, make overnight oats that you can grab and go. Choose high-fiber cereals and snacks.
Bean there, done that. Work beans and legumes into your dishes. From salads to spreads, mains to sides, beans can slide seamlessly into just about any meal. Supplement. If you struggle with getting enough fiber through your diet, a fiber supplement may be just the thing. Talk to your doctor before adding them to your routine, as they can affect certain medications.
It's hard to believe these orange sorbet-flavored rings aren't candy! One serving of these gummies equates to the fiber in three bags of spinach. That's a trade we'll take any day!

Sconces are the retro home trend we’re thrilled to welcome back, particularly in the bathroom. These stylish sconces offer a gentle glow that’s so alluring.
2nature’s best
In an ulta-sleek design like this one, natural materials soften the space and provide a sense of grounding calm. These shades are as stunning as they are practical.
3 bold tile
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: unusual tile is the 2024 home trend to know. The irregular texture of each tile offsets the standard rectangular shape, resulting in big visual drama.

NATURAL FIBERS
Natural fibers help bring modern design back to earth. A jute bathmat would be just the thing to soften the severe look of the floor tiles.

Think of hardware as the jewelry of the bathroom. You accessorize your sink, shower and tub with these metal fixtures. A modern bath deserves an elegant, stunning tub filler.

Fought Dinner
Nestled in the beautiful landscape of Lexington lies a home that amplifies the apex of luxury living. Through the imagination of the Foughts and architect Paul Lee and the expert craftsmanship of Jimmy Nash Homes, a oneof-a-kind home was built in the bluegrass. This partnership brought together Clay Leavell of Kitchen Concepts and Joe Reilly of Pieratt’s contractor sales to create not only a highly functional kitchen, but one whose quality and performance matched the rest of the home. With that in mind, there was only one option for appliances: Subzero, Wolf, and Cove. After the project was complete, Tisdel, the distributor for those brands, joined other project partners along with the homeowners, David and Elizabeth, to create a dining experience as unique and luxurious as the home itself.
The kitchen is the heart of the home and the Fought kitchen was crafted to impress. The residence features an array of luxury appliances that offer sophistication and unparalleled performance. Tisdel distributing executive chef Brandie Lamb, along with Tisdel’s Shannon Wynn and Chef Matt Arlington, crafted a menu specifically for the occasion, highlighting the capabilities of Subzero refrigeration and wine storage, Wolf cooking, and the Cove dishwasher.
“It is important for us at Tisdel Distributing for our customers to use their appliances to their fullest potential. I believe the best way to do this
is through cooking demonstrations in our showroom or being in the client’s home after the appliances are installed,” Chef Brandie says as she helps the homeowner season their new Wolf double griddle before the dinner party begins. Pieratt’s is proud to offer “in-home use and care” to their builder clients. While this doesn’t mean everyone gets a chef for a day, they will receive one-on-one instruction from the Tisdel factory representative about all of their new kitchen appliances.
The menu consisted of a ten-hour braised beef short rib, prepared peking duck style over a coconut farro, collard green curry, and peanut red chili gremolata. The salad did not disappoint with chef Brandie’s southern take on a wedge, complete with shaved, farm-raised egg and pimento cheese. The dessert of malted chocolate brownie and gelato didn’t end there; a surprise adult milkshake accompanied by a chocolate wafer straw was a fun treat to end the evening.
Partnerships with Pieratt’s – a locally owned family-operated appliance dealer with a 75+ year history in the area – make it easy to streamline the home building or home remodel project for owners. Working with Jimmy Nash Homes and leaning on Kitchen Concepts for cabinetry design and layout, every detail of the Fought home has been thoughtfully curated to create an environment where culinary dreams and memorable entertaining come true.
Pieratt’s has a long tradition of partnering with builders, remodelers, and designers – both big and small – to create a unique and perfect space for every project. From entry level to luxury brands like SubZero and Wolf, Pieratt’s has something for everyone. And, while their contractor sales department specializes in developing and maintaining relationships with all the premier builders in central Kentucky to fulfill appliance needs, their retail sales professionals are always there to assist with every room of the house. From mattresses and furniture to big-screen televisions, Pieratt’s can provide the right product at the right price for every room in the house.

Coastal Summer
We all secretly dream of a glamorous overseas summer vacation. Languid days spent in sun-drenched, quaint little cities dotted along the coast. Dining on bread and olives with an unobstructed view of the sea. Slowly moving along stone-paved streets, browsing plein air markets and marveling over stunningly yellow lemons, fragrant red tomatoes, masterfully crafted wine. And in our imaginations, we’re the main characters of our fantasy; every moment is picture-perfect, everything is free and it never, ever ends.
Reality always comes crashing back in. Endless plane trips and expired passports, limited vacation time and limited budgets can squash our dreams pretty quickly.
But there’s no reason to let all that stop you from having the coastal summer of your dreams. Sure, we may not have an ocean view here in Kentucky, but all of the rest of it is easily within our reach if we have just a little imagination... and some creativity. by Amanda Harper
Travel Book (available at Peggy’s Gifts)
Five Ways to Make Your Home More Coastal
Plants. Everywhere.
Part of what makes coastal areas so stunning? The abundant plant life! From wild-growing trees to potted plants on balconies, it seems like everywhere you look, there’s a plant that’s thriving. And rarely are they carefully manicured shrubs or symmetrical little beds of flowers; they’re left to grow wherever the sun takes them!
Bold Umbrellas
Even people who adore soaking up the sunshine can sometimes find it a little too sunny in the summertime. Coastal cities aren’t shy about offering a little shade on their patios; their umbrellas are usually boldly colored, sometimes with patterns or fanciful trims. Reach for umbrellas that stand out in a big way.
What Walls?
A trademark of sunny coastal cities is that there’s very little delineation between indoors and outdoors. They bring outside elements into the interior of the home while expanding living areas out into exterior spaces. So
while the weather’s nice, stop relying on walls – or lack thereof – to tell you where you’re lounging.
Artisan Made
Most overseas cities have histories that span centuries –some, even millennia. The décor in these regions always celebrates their rich culture. Artisan-made pottery, textiles, baskets, sculptures, paintings and more bring such visual interest to a home while supporting local artists.
Look to Nature
Natural materials and textures are a hallmark of coastal towns. Think stucco walls, exposed beams, terra cotta, natural stonework and limewashed walls. Accessories featuring woven fibers like jute, seagrass or rattan both fit this exact vibe and happen to be on-trend at the moment. The base palette tends to be very nature-inspired, layering in pops of brilliant color through accessories. Fortunately for UK fans, cobalt blue is very fitting for Mediterranean-inspired décor!
How to Get the Coastal Vibe
Mediterranean Diet
Unlike other fad diets, The Mediterranean Diet isn’t restrictive and doesn’t really have any clear rules, making it easy – even joyful – to follow. The goal is to enjoy traditional foods for countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, including France, Italy, Greece and Spain. Research has shown that people in this region live longer and tend to be healthier, with a lower risk of many chronic conditions that plague us Americans. Having a coastal summer could actually be good for your health!
Focus on eating fresh produce and whole grains. Cook with extra virgin olive oil and avocado oil. Try swapping red meat and processed meat for seafood, poultry, eggs and other sources of protein. Flavor foods with herbs and spices rather than reaching for salt.
The best way to truly savor this diet? Share it with friends! Invite loved ones to your table and share fresh, whole meals family-style. Trying out new Mediterraneaninspired recipes will break you out of your cooking rut and having distraction-free time with friends and family will do your soul some good.
Dine Outside
Think back to the last time you were at the beach. How often did you dine outside? Patio dining is an essential part of what makes coastal living so magical. But you can capture that vibe in central Kentucky! If you’re headed out to eat, choose a restaurant with a patio designed to help you relax and unwind. Staying in?
Dine on your patio or balcony – or make it a picnic on your lawn! Consider packing up a picnic and stopping by a park or other natural area. Dining outside can be a transformative experience that carries you away from the humdrum of everyday life.
Set the Table
It’s so easy to get away from using tablecloths, cloth napkins, chargers, placemats and other table accessories during the summer. Setting the table – even when you’re dining outdoors – makes the meal feel so much more special and intentional. Light candles when the sun dips below the horizon for a romantic, unforgettable glow.
Learn to Deal With the Heat
Those sunny climes of coastal regions can be a doubleedged sword in the summer… much like Kentucky! Dress in loose, breezy fabrics made of fibers designed to wick moisture away from your body: think flowy pants, offthe-shoulder tops, linen button-ups and swinging skirts. Condition your hair to stave off humidity, and cover it when driving around with the top down. Hydrate often
and seek shade whenever you need it. Use SPF and UVA protection whenever possible to ensure that you can stay outside longer without damaging your skin, and wear waterproof makeup to keep you fresh and flawless for whatever comes your way.
Farmer’s Market
Get the experience of trawling a coastal outdoor market right here in Kentucky – while getting up close and personal with the amazing people who produce your food! Buying local produce ensures you get the freshest taste while supporting Kentucky agriculture. That’s truly a win/win!
Get Out on the Water
While the ocean is a lonnnnng drive away, that doesn’t mean you can’t make a splash! Rent a boat on one of Kentucky’s lakes or go tubing on one of the state’s rivers. For those who prefer the pool, don’t worry; lounging by the pool is still a very authentic piece of that coastal lifestyle. So long as you’re near a body of water, it counts!
Get Into Red Wine
Red wine isn’t everyone’s cup of tea initially. But once your palate acclimates – and you find the right red wine for you – it’s a flavorful sip that happens to bring a bevy of health benefits. Red wine contains resveratrol, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. More studies are needed, but it seems as if drinking red wine regularly may potentially lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of plaque buildup in the heart and reduce your risk of cancer, Alzheimer’s and diabetes. All of this assumes you are consuming wine in moderation, about 1-2 glasses per day; drinking more may actually increase these risks. Try swapping your usual beer or cocktail for a glass of red wine a day and enjoy a time-honored Mediterranean tradition.
Set Up Your Spaces for Calm
The coastal vibe is all about relaxation and taking life just a little bit slower. Clear out distracting, irritating clutter. Make sitting areas throughout your home and outdoor areas more comfy with ample cushions and throw pillows. Set up your entryway or mudroom so you can grab what you need and go, be it your gardening hat or your pool tote. Prepare everything you can ahead of time so that your mornings and evenings are seamlessly easy. And keep your guest room ready for company – everyone will want to enjoy your new beachy lifestyle!

What's in Our Bags
by Fran Elsen, Erin Oliver, Amanda Harper, & Chloe DayFran's Essentials:
I have a few essentials that I carry in my bag every day along with my wallet and cosmetic bag. While I may not use every single thing all the time; it gives me peace of mind knowing I have these items if I need them!
Erin's On-the-Run Bag:
I would consider myself a girl on the go, so less is more when it comes to what’s in my bag. I usually have my leather belt bag strapped to the front of my body, for a practical but put together look. Whether I’m scooting in and out of the office or on a stroll at the arboretum, I always keep the following items in my bag to ensure I’m prepared, and most importantly, have a snack secured.
Amanda's Weekend Drive Tote:
When the workweek is through, my boyfriend and I enjoy taking off on long, meandering drives around Kentucky. The wonderful thing about our region’s countryside is that you never know what you’ll come upon – or what you’ll need to hop out of your car to see up close. So I always keep road trip essentials in my “go” bag, from discarded fast food napkins to spray-on sunscreen. I also keep a few cute accessories in case we decide to stop by a local gem restaurant or tourist attraction.
Chloe's Everything Bag:
I’m not one to shy away from a ludicrously capacious bag, especially when it can carry me from the office to a coffee shop, farmer’s market, gym, or wherever else I venture. As a true serial hobbyist, I love that this bag can store my favorite crafts so I can keep myself busy during downtime. I’ve carried the same leather agenda since college, but it now contains loyalty cards to restaurants I frequent—enter, Dad’s Favorites—and written notes of things I swear I’ll remember. I also love to keep a few smaller must-haves on hand in case I need a boost of energy or a bag for groceries.
Whether you’re looking for a total backyard reno or just some fresh ideas to spruce up your outdoor spaces, we’re serving you some sweet summer ideas to keep your personal oasis up to date. by Erin Oliver
Extending Indoor Spaces
Blending your indoor space with your outdoor patio or porch is all the rage this season. Make design choices, like matching indoor flooring and furniture with what you have outdoors, to create a seamless aesthetic. Materials like stone, tile, and wood are popular porch floor choices for this look... and also fit with some of the other trends we’re about share!
Another fun way to link your home’s interior with your patio? A pass-through bar will allow you to serve your guests food and drinks without continually running back and forth. We love that this home’s pass-through is styled with barstools on either side. That means the bar is enjoyable all year long... and that you can enjoy the outside with all the benefits of your air conditioning!
Comfortable & Functional Seating Areas
We’re fully embracing that “comfortable” and “practical” are the magic words this season. Get the look by shopping inviting couches and outdoor sectionals with durable fabrics.

Old Brand New The Vine TREX Almost Heaven SaunasCARING SPACES
One of the most important elements of design that an architect must consider with any project is the end user’s eventual experience in that space. Every choice must bear in mind how the person occupying the space will feel. Nowhere is that more important than in the design of a medical facility specifically for children and adolescents.
Stengel Hill Architects was trusted with conceptualizing the renovation of the University of Kentucky’s Adolescent Behavioral Unit. The project began with the relocation of the existing program from Good Samaritan Hospital to Chandler Hospital, enhancing alignment with services at the UK Children’s Hospital. The 17-bed inpatient space would comprise two units, one serving children ages 5-11 and the other for adolescents 11-17 years of age.
For these kids, it was essential to create a sense of safety, privacy, and personal space. All of the architectural design, furniture, and finishes were carefully selected with this goal in mind. Each patient enjoys a dedicated space, which allows them to incorporate their belongings, giving them continuity of place during their care.
Stengel Hill wanted to go a step beyond with this project. To that end, the spaces integrate features like music therapy and individually controlled lighting
to enhance the individualism of each area. Modern, modular furniture allows the children to interact with their environment. Medical experts agree that isolation is detrimental to these young patients’ well-being, so communal spaces offer them opportunities to socialize or participate in group therapy.
Behavioral Healthcare Design is not just about architecture; it’s about transforming lives. Their commitment to creating environments that promote mental well-being reflects the profound impact thoughtful design can have on individuals and communities. Stengel Hill is passionate about creating spaces that foster dignity, support recovery, and empower individuals on their unique journeys. As a leading design firm in the Behavioral Healthcare industry, Stengel Hill Architects is proud to contribute to spaces that prioritize healing, well-being, and inclusivity.
Stengel Hill is the largest healthcare architecture and interior design firm in Kentucky. Founded in 1996 by Bradford Stengel and Charles Hill, they have offices in Lexington, Louisville, and Nashville. In addition to their extensive work in healthcare, they also serve the commercial and higher education markets. Stengel Hill is an 80+ member firm. •

“Proudly bringing pride, honesty & integrity to all our customers”:
How one local business is changing the standard in the mechanical industryArt Hubbard Owner
In our ever-changing world, many companies have shifted away from providing personal service and care for their customers. We sat down with husband and wife duo Art and Stephanie Hubbard to learn how they are focused on bringing passion back to the HVAC, Plumbing, and Boilers industry—one job at a time.
Q: What inspired you to open Hubbard Mechanical?
A: I was disheartened by the trend of other companies in our field shifting towards profit-driven models and wanted to bring change to the industry. I wanted to prioritize people over profit, and luckily in 2015, I was able to make this dream a full-time reality.
Q: Is there a motto you operate your business by?
A: Our tagline is “Proudly bringing pride, honesty & integrity to all our customers.” For me, this means that true service for our customers involves putting their needs above all else. Through honest service, family values, and the pursuit of excellence, I am working to redefine the HVAC, Plumbing, and Boilers landscape one customer at a time.
Q: What services does your business provide?
A: We are a diverse company that provides service to the HVAC, Plumbing and Boiler Trades. Whether you need assistance with the plumbing in your master bathroom or have a concern about your building’s heating and cooling, we promise to offer honest support and help you make the right decision for your situation.
Stephanie Hubbard Human Resources and Finance ManagerQ: What is the next step for your team?
A: Well, I’m passionate about bringing the next generations into the trades, and would love to break industry stereotypes about minorities and females in trade occupations. I always aim to empower both demographics to become the very best in their fields while keeping our company’s values at the root of their work. As we continue to grow leaps and bounds, our main focus remains to be providing honest personal service to our customers.

Build-a-Baguette
Charcuterie boards are an elegant, timeless snack staple. But their perfect curation can be time consuming and fussy. That’s why we’re fans of the Baguette Board as a speedy, rustic alternative.
A Baguette Board features a sliced baguette served up alongside a few select spreads and toppings, designed for guests to help themselves. Think of it as a deconstructed crostini; rather than spending all that time assembling each one, you invite guests to build their own using the toppings that they prefer.
We especially love this idea because it’s endlessly adaptable. Serve a few soft cheeses, honey and figs for breakfast. Open up tins of your favorite toppings for a girls’ night snack. Cut the baguette into larger chunks and serve with cheeses, spreads and meats for a family-style meal. It’s something you can throw together with items in your pantry for last-minute guests or an appetizer you can carefully select and style for dinner parties.

Creamy Tahini Salad Dressing
1/4 c. olive oil
1/4 c. tahini
2 T lemon juice
2 T Dijon mustard
2 tsp. maple syrup
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1 T fresh parsley, chopped
2 T ice-cold water
In a jar, combine all ingredients except water, and whisk or shake thoroughly to combine.
Add cold water and whisk or shake again. If the result is too thick, add another tablespoon of water. Refrigerate for up to a week. (adapted from Cookie and Kate)
Serve atop a bed of your favorite salad greens with any of the following: goat cheese, feta, chickpeas, peppers, seeds, Persian cucumbers and sesame croutons.
Try Tahini!
Even if you’re sure you’ve never heard of tahini, you’ve probably eaten some. This Levantine condiment is typically made from toasted, ground, hulled sesame. It can be served by itself as a dip, but it’s a foundational building block of hummus, baba ganoush and halva.
On its own, tahini is nutty and earthy in flavor with a slight bitterness that can be a lovely complement or contrast to dishes like falafel or roasted vegetables. It can be used as a marinade or used in salad dressings, sauces, soups, breads and even desserts – look up recipes for tahini cookies, cheesecake and fudge!
Making tahini at home is easy. Toast a cup of sesame seeds in a skillet. Process the seeds in a food processor until they form a crumbly paste, then add 2 tablespoons of olive oil or sesame oil. Process again until thick and smooth. Store in an airtight jar for a month, stirring if the mixture separates. Generally, fans of tahini agree that homemade is better than store bought, which can go rancid quickly.
Fun Fact: The oldest mention of sesame is on a cuneiform tablet dating back to 4,000 years ago, which mentions serving the gods sesame wine. While our current word for tahini only dates back to the 13th century, it’s very likely people have been enjoying this condiment for far, far longer! •

Blueberries
The phrase “as American as apple pie” is actually a bit misleading. Apples actually aren’t native to North America, originating in Kazakhstan. Spaniards brought apples to Mexico and South America in the late 1500s and didn’t make their way here until the 17th century. Apple pie itself first originated in England.
Blueberries, on the other hand, originated right here in North America around 13,000 years ago. They were an important source of food for Native Americans for thousands of years. For colonists, they became a seasonal treat. They would remain that way until the early 1900s, when commercial cultivation made them a grocery store staple. The first documented blueberry pie recipe was made right here in America several decades prior.
This delicious little berry is delicious when eaten on its own. But it really shines in dessert, pastry and drink recipes, lending both sweetness and color to the dish. by Amanda Harper

me-Saving Grilled Ribs
1/4 c. brown sugar
2 T chili powder
1 T kosher salt
1 tsp. black pepper
1 tsp. dried oregano
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. smoked paprika
2 racks baby back ribs
1 c. low-sodium chicken broth
2 T apple cider vinegar
1 c. barbecue sauce
Combine brown sugar, chili powder, salt, pepper, oregano, cayenne, garlic powder, onion powder and paprika in a small bowl. Rub mixture on both sides of each rack of ribs. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 250°F. in a roasting pan, combine chicken broth and apple cider vinegar. Add ribs to pan and cover tightly with foil. Bake 2 hours. Remove ribs from pan.
Pour sauce from pan into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Simmer until reduced by half. Add barbecue sauce.
Preheat your grill to medium-high. Add ribs to grill and cook about 5 minutes on each side, until slightly charred. Cut ribs between bones and toss in sauce. (adapted from Food Network)
Notes: This is a shortcut meant to get your ribs on the table at the same time as all your other grilled mains without anything getitng cold. If you’d like a more caramelized taste, return the sauce-coated ribs to the grill for up to 5 minutes per side. Be sure you’re finished cooking on the grill, as the sauce will stick to the grates.
The barbecue sauce you use will greatly affect the outcome. The apple cider vinegar will add some tang, so we suggest sticking with a sweeter, smokier sauce. If the only barbecue sauce you have on hand is a little flat, add 1/4 tsp. of liquid smoke OR 1 tsp. apple cider vinegar to the saucepan, depending on your preferences.
If you perhaps wanted to swap a quarter (or so) of the chicken stock with bourbon... well, we certainly wouldn’t stop you.

Lexington SoulFeast Week
By Amanda HarperFor ten days each year, Lexingtoninans come together to celebrate Black culinary culture. Through unique experiences, locals learn more about Black agriculture, food and culture, one delicious bite at a time.
During the Covid pandemic, Martina Barksdale was inspired to do something to drive business to Blackowned establishments. For 19 days, she challenged herself and the Lexington community to do more to support local Black businesses.
She and her brother, Marcellus, decided to hone that idea into something bigger. In 2021, they established SoulFeast Week, a week-plus celebration of Black restaurants, farms and chefs in central Kentucky.
"SoulFeast Week is an opportunity for Kentuckians of all races and backgrounds to support Black businesses by putting their money where their mouths are, literally," the team says.
SoulFeast Lexington Black Restaurant Week will be June 17-23 this year. Participating restaurants and food trucks will create a unique, off-menu entrée priced at just $12. Past dishes have ranged from rich, hearty seafood gumbo to deliciously sweet waffles, bright salads to spicy barbecue.
The Barksdales partnered with Black Soil KY, a Lexington organization that promotes Black-owned farms and agriculture. A unique aspect of Lexington Black Restaurant Week is that each featured dish must include at least one ingredient sourced from Black Soil KY; this means that the dishes have a direct tie to local Black agriculture.
SoulFeast Week is more than just a food week; it encompasses elevated specialty experiences designed to help locals expand their understanding of Black culinary culture – while having a blast! These events are a delicious way to connect with Black producers, culture and cuisine.
Visit soulfeastweek.com to fi nd a list of participating restaurants or to get tickets for the SoulFeast Week experiences. To learn more about Black Soil KY, visit blacksoilky.com.

Bluegrass Community Health Center is Bridging the Gap
While access to healthcare has improved dramatically over the last decade, there are still people who fall through the cracks of our healthcare system. Many families face insurmountable hurdles in getting the care they need. Fortunately, one local group is lending those families a helping hand and qualified, supportive care.
Bluegrass Community Health Center (BCHC) provides comprehensive healthcare in our community with outreach programs designed to aid underserved populations. Established in 2001 with a federal grant to serve local migrant farmworkers, their services have expanded to serve people experiencing homelessness and other people in need. They promote “better health, better life” by offering care and respect for all people in our area.
According to a recent US Census report, 26 million adults in the US are uninsured. BCHC serves over 8,000 patients in an eight-county area of service: Fayette, Woodford, Jessamine, Garrard, Madison, Clark, Bourbon and Scott Counties. They welcome patients with Medicaid, Medicare and commercial insurance. For uninsured patients, they offer slidingscale fees based on client income and household size. They ensure no one is denied access to services due to inability to pay.
In about 1 in 5 US households, a language other than English is primarily spoken at home. Though over 350 unique languages are spoken in the US, Spanish is by far the most common non-English language spoken in American homes. According to the National Institute of Health, Hispanic people struggle most with access to care across a number of measures, with language barriers among them. BCHC employs bilingual staff who help bridge this gap. They also utilize language line interpretation to ensure that all patients have access to clinic services in any language.
Another major barrier to healthcare that many households in our region face is the distance to providers and lack of transportation to get there. BCHC brings care to the communities that need it through a mobile primary care clinic that stops by Lexington Pride Center, Lexington Rescue Mission, local churches and more throughout the month; check the BCHC website for locations and dates.
BCHC utilizes an Integrated Care Model. This means behavioral health services are offered alongside primary care.
From lifestyle support for chronic disease management to counseling for mental health needs, BCHC providers evaluate the mind-body-behavior connection and provide brief, solution-focused interventions. This includes care for substance users. Since many of their clients are unhoused, they help connect patients with resources like temporary housing, food banks, career centers and transportation. They also connect patients with other medical and mental health services as needed, including Surgery on Sunday, Mission Lex, NAMI Lexington, Open Doors Counseling Center and KY Cancer Link.

Gym Rules
Q: I swear, I just spotted my future spouse at the gym. Can I ask them out?
We won’t say that no one has ever met their future partner at a gym – in fact, we’re sure it has happened – but we are saying that it’s incredibly unlikely that it just happened to you. What’s far, far more likely is that the object of your sudden obsession almost certainly does not want to be asked out at the gym
What you can do is be polite. Don’t watch them work out, don’t offer them “tips,” don’t show off, don’t wait for them at the exits. Instead, be genuine and friendly. Offer them a compliment that doesn’t focus on their body. Hold the door open for them. If you see them struggling with something, ask if they need a hand.
Once you’ve established a friendly rapport over several weeks, then you can think about approaching them – when they don’t have headphones in, when they’re not actively working out. Start off with a disclaimer, acknowledging the awkwardness like, “I know it’s weird to bring this up at the gym, but I was wondering if you’d like to grab a drink with me sometime?”
And if they say no, say you understand and drop it
Q: I like to film my workouts for the socials. Why is everyone so weird about it?
Three things are happening here. One, and perhaps most importantly, in addition to filming yourself, you are also filming them without their consent. No bueno.
Two, you are probably giving the impression that you’re hogging equipment. Setting up your phone, doing your picture-perfect reps for the camera, refilming because that wasn’t quite right... While you have every right to use the space, it looks like you’re just using the gym as a prop for likes. That’s going to rankle some folks. Finally, yeah, people are judgy. In this case, it may be worth considering their perspective.
Q: Ughhh... someone is hogging the equipment.
It’s definitely frustrating to sit and watch someone waste your time and theirs at the gym. You want to get in and get out, and there they are lollygagging about.
First, it’s important to remember that a legimitate rest between sets looks exactly like just tooling around. But if you want to tackle the situation, you can try:
• “How many sets do you have left?” Asking them may prompt them to remove their head from their rear and realize they’re camping.
• “Mind if I work in?” If equipment is easily shareable, there’s no reason you couldn’t slip in and do a few sets while they rest.
• If a time limit is posted and they have exceeded it, talk to an attendant.
Q: Can I “save” machines?
If there are a lot of people at the gym while you normally go, that’s when you’ll be most tempted to save a machine with your bag, water bottle or jacket.
But that’s also when the most people need the equipment. By saving a machine – or even mulitple stations – you’re creating a backlog for no good reason. Don’t do it.
If you want to do “supersets” or circuits, your best bet is to go when the gym isn’t as busy. Otherwise, try to stay flexible with your workout routine. Find ways to pass the time while you wait.
Remember that your workout routine isn’t really anyone else’s problem. They deserve to use the equipment, too! •

Alvin Brooks III Catching Up With Coach
Wherever Alvin Brooks III goes, success seems to follow him and Kentucky fans can hope that trend continues now that he’s in Lexington as part of new UK coach Mark Pope’s staff. He started his coaching career at Arkansas – Fort Smith and helped the team win the 2006 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I championship. He went to Midland the next season and again was part of a NJCAA national championship team in 2007.
If that wasn’t enough, during his eight-year stint as an assistant coach at Baylor he was on the staff for the 2021 national championship team.
Not bad considering the plan was not for him to be a coach according to his father, Alvin Brooks II who was on coach Billy Gillispie’s staff at UK as director of operations for two seasons (2007-09) and is now the head coach at Lamar.
“When he was younger, I was the fi rst black head coach of any sport at Houston in 1993. When he would come over, I would never work him out, never have fi lm sessions, never talk about how we run plays. He would just run around the gym and play. He saw all the difficulties I went through. He saw the struggles from raising money to recruiting guys. He was like, ‘I never want to coach,’ and I said, ‘That’s good because I don’t want you to.’
“The plan was never for him to be a coach. Coaching basketball was not going to be a thing for him. I love it but I told him there were so many more things he could do.”
Alvin Brooks III went to work for some attorneys in Houston after fi nishing his playing career at Idaho State and then went to Washington, D.C.,as a fi nancial planner. However, he wanted to coach and once his father realized he could not talk him out of it, he encouraged his son to start in junior college to learn how to become a complete coach.
Obviously, he learned his lessons well and many thought he was on the verge of becoming a head coach when he decided to join Pope’s staff.
“I don’t think he was antsy about being here for eight years and not being a head coach yet. He could have stayed here a long time and been very happy but he just could not pass up the chance to go to Kentucky for various reasons. He’s a really good man that I think Kentucky fans will really enjoy,” John Morris, the play-by-play radio announcer for Baylor basketball and football, said.
One off-court factor that helped solidify Brooks’ decision to come to UK was the school situation for his two autistic sons.
“He wanted to see if there was a school and personnel that could provide a good place for his boys. That was very important to him,” Morris said.
His father told his son he was sure “people there could provide a good support system and really help develop his boys” a lot and that’s what the new UK coach found on his fi rst visit to Lexington since his father had coached there.
“Even if it is a good basketball job and move, if it is not a good move for your family you don’t leave,” the Lamar coach said. “That’s what I believe and he and his wife feel the same. At the end of the day your family is what you have to take care of fi rst and he certainly knew that when he made his decision which shows how good he felt about what he found in Lexington."
