HEALTHYour health care needs change as you get older. While that is a pretty obvious statement, what’s less obvious is exactly what you should be doing to support your health through the years. While nothing can replace the guidance of your health care team, these are some rough guidelines to think about. Bring along this checklist to your next appointment and see which points you and your doctor think you may want to prioritize in this wonderful decade of your life!
by Amanda HarperIn Your 20s
• Every three years: pap smear and/or HPV screening
• Every six months: dental checkup
• Monthly: at-home breast exams and testicular exams
• Every 10 years: tetanus booster
• STI screening, as discussed with your doctor
• Annual skin checks to search for abnormalities and skin cancer
• Use a daily sunscreen to protect your skin and prevent early signs of aging!
• Get an eye exam every few years to check for certain conditions; more often if you need glasses, wear contacts or notice changes in your eyesight.
• If you’re a woman who plans to have children in the near future, discuss your plan with your ob/gyn. Adjust your contraceptives, vitamin intake/ diet and lifestyle according to their recommendations.
BeProactive
In Your 30s
•Every year: Annual checkup to evaluate your blood pressure and overall well being
•Every few years: cholesterol test (more often if you are at risk of certain cardiovascular conditions)
•If you have certain genetic markers, begin breast cancer screenings. This is part of a longer conversation with your health care team.
•If you don’t already, try adding weight lifting or resistance training to your fitness routine to prevent loss of muscle mass.
•Adjust your skincare routine to prevent or correct fine lines and increase overall brightness.
•If you are planning to have children in your 30s, discuss your plans with your doctor.
•Your fitness routine in your 30s should focus on building a strong core. You also want to follow the American Heart Association’s recommendations for your cardiovascular health (get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity with moderate muscle-strengthening activity at least twice a week).
In Your 40s
•Mammograms according to your doctor’s recommendation
•Diabetes screening if you have certain risk factors
•Discuss family history for prostate and/or colon cancer with your doctor to determine if screenings are appropriate.
•Discuss menopause with your doctor and make a game plan for this transition.
•Add collagen powder to your diet to help preserve your skin’s elasticity.
•Adjust your makeup routine to brighten any features that have changed as you’ve aged.
•Adjust your diet according to your doctor’s recommendations.
•Noticing some hair loss? In addition to genetic predisposition, your hair loss could be caused by certain conditions, so it’s important to discuss this with your doctor – and to address it.
• Every two years: mammogram and/or breast MRI
• Every few years: colon cancer screening
• Get your shingles vaccine!
• Get regular blood screenings to check your kidney health, iron levels and other important health markers. Discuss lung cancer screenings with your doctor, especially if you are a current/former smoker or have a family history of lung cancer.
• Ensure your exercise routine includes lots of walking and lowimpact activities to keep you feeling your best without putting unnecessary strain on your joints.
• If you don’t already use daily moisturizers (face and body), add those to your skincare routine now. If you’re still noticing dry skin, consider finding a moisturizer that works better for your needs.
• Adjust your makeup routine to account for your current skin; products you used in previous decades may not work as well now.
• Going gray? Your hair’s texture is probably quite different than before. Adjust your haircare routine accordingly.
• Talk to your doctor about your sexual health. This decade can bring on a lot of changes in this department, so don’t be embarrassed to ask!
• Talk to your doctor about what vitamins and supplements may be appropriate for you.
In Your 60s
•Every year: annual eye exams to screen for certain eye conditions and to check your vision, which will change frequently as you age
•Discuss bone density testing with your doctor, especially if you are a woman.
•Beginning at age 65, get your pneumonia vaccines.
•Beginning at age 65, discuss with your doctor whether pap smears and other frequent screenings are needed going forward.
•Adjust your diet according to your doctor’s recommendations. You may want to increase your fiber intake.
•Make new friends. You’re most likely at a new phase in your life. Developing friendships and forming new connections at this stage is especially important to your well being!
ThisList Builds.
Don't think that just because you've aged up a decade, that you get to skip all the healthy stuff you were already doing. These recommendations are cumulative!
When you're
70+
•Every year: Get your flu shot
•Every two years: colon and bowel cancer screenings
•Adjust your fitness routine to your physical condition, bearing in mind your joint health. You may need to pay special attention to your balance and the muscles that help support your stability.
•Adjust your diet per your health care team’s recommendations.
•Make regular appointments to see your primary care physician per their recommendations. Keep a list of your concerns between visits to ensure you can discuss each issue. Topics that should be regularly discussed include your heart health, overall mood, memory, bowel health, hearing, fall risk and regular screenings.

Mike Bastin and his wife were living out their lifelong goals for retirement — traveling, doing mission work, and staying active in their Lincoln County community. When longtime knee problems sidelined him, he was determined not to let a knee replacement limit his lifestyle. Working closely with orthopedic surgeon Janak Talwalker, MD, he proved that a can-do attitude can be the key to a consistent — and complete — recovery. “I saw progress all the way through the first year, and since then, I have no pain in my left knee,” he said. “I could really see genuine compassion and care from everybody at Baptist Health. Weight Loss Trends
Even with the right diet and exercise, losing weight can be difficult! With juice cleanses, medications and herbal supplements around every corner claiming to help you lose half your body weight in a snap, it can be confusing and frustrating when you find yourself needing a little support.
There are plenty of popular medications on the market that can help you kickstart your weight loss journey. Here, we’ve listed a few of the trendiest medications and supplements to help you while researching your options. Just remember, we are not medical experts! You should always talk with your doctor before starting any new medications, supplements or diet plans.
by Allyson MattinglyOzempic
Though officially not a weight loss drug, Ozempic has recently gained popularity for its ability to help people shed a few pounds. Formulated to help people with type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar, Ozempic is a once-a-week injection that contains semaglutide. Semaglutide is an FDA-approved ingredient known for treating obesity and other weight-related problems (and is also the main ingredient in Wegovy, another drug we’ll get into later!)
Ozempic works by enhancing the effects of the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1, which affects the hunger mechanism in the brain. It helps by reducing appetite and cravings and by prolonging fullness after meals. Medications like Ozempic are designed to be taken long-term, so if you’re looking to drop just a few pounds, it may not be your best option. It can also have some uncomfortable side effects. Be sure to ask your doctor about all your weight loss options!
Wegovy
Like Ozempic, Wegovy is a once-weekly semaglutide injection that affects how appetite works in the brain. With Wegovy, users can regulate appetite, eat less, lose weight and keep it off. Wegovy differs from Ozempic in just a few ways, including its higher doses, the physical injection pen, and who the medication is indicated for. Where Ozempic is formulated for type 2 diabetics, its sister medication is specifically approved for chronic weight management. Nevertheless, both medications have been proven safe and effective in aiding with weight loss.
Mounjaro
Unlike Ozempic and Wegovy, Mounjaro is a medication known as tirzepatide. This injectable type 2 diabetes medication works by directly activating GIP and GLP-1 pathways to regulate blood sugar. It helps suppress appetite and makes you feel more full. It also changes the rate at which your stomach empties. Because it works on two fronts, it may trigger more rapid weight loss than Ozempic or Wegovy. That said, it has not yet been approved as a weight loss drug at this time.
FYI: Many of these injections can be self- administered at home.
Phentermine
Phentermine, or Adipex-P, is used to help people struggling with obesity or weight-related problems in the form of a pill. Phentermine is similar to amphetamine prescriptions like Vyvanse and stimulates the central nervous system to decrease your appetite and increase the energy used by your body.
Adipex-P must be prescribed by your doctor. It is usually taken about 1 to 2 hours before breakfast; be sure to follow your prescription label and your doctor’s instructions, as you should with all prescription medications! Adipex-P is designed for short-term use only, as the effects of appetite suppression can wear off after a while. Combined with a healthy diet and exercise, you may see results quickly.
B12 Injections
Vitamin B12 largely contributes to the overall health of your body. While it’s not designed for weight loss, it may help your body metabolize fat efficiently and effectively. B12 injections are prescribed by your doctor, but there are also B12 supplements that you can pick up over the counter. Injections, however, can help you get the full benefits of vitamin B12 being deposited directly into your bloodstream. B12 injections may be administered once or twice a week and can boost your energy levels, improve metabolism, resolve fatigue and brain fog, and result in better mood and cognition. Who wouldn’t want that?!
Ashwagandha
With a reputation as a jack-of-all-trades, ashwagandha works in clever ways to support brain function, aid mental illness symptoms, and even help with weight management. This powerful adaptogen is jam-packed with antioxidants, which play a role in decreasing inflammation in the body and triggering your metabolism. Ashwagandha also helps to minimize the effect of cortisol in your body, and with cortisol being responsible for increasing cravings, the adaptogen can help curb your appetite and, ultimately, assist in your weight loss journey. With less stress in your system, you’ll find yourself sleeping better, having less anxiety, feeling more energetic, and, most importantly, your hormones will be properly balanced! •
ALL of these options are meant to be used in combination with a balanced diet, exercise & your doctor's guidance!
Spice
it up!
Herbs and spices have been valued for centuries, and for good reason. Not only do spices breathe life into bland, flavorless dishes, but they also breathe life into your body with surprising health benefits!
No, you don't need to go on an Eat, Pray, Love style whirlwind culinary experience to find these healthy spices because they are most likely already on your spice rack. After reading about all these benefits, you'll be ready to spice up your food game and your life, all while feeling better than ever!
by Allyson MattinglyThat's hot!
Turmeric
Cayenne Pepper
If you're looking to add some heat along with health benefits to your diet, look no further than the cayenne pepper. Though a small pepper, the cayenne pepper is mighty in healing properties like helping with migraines, improving digestive health, easing joint pain, clearing congestion, and much more.
Possibly our favorite benefit of cayenne pepper is the fact that it can reduce appetite while boosting metabolism, meaning it's a great spice to introduce to your recipes if you're trying to lose weight. Because of these properties, cayenne is a common ingredient in weight loss supplements! Before you apply with a heavy hand, remember that cayenne is bound to make you breathe fire if you're not accustomed to spicy food, so gradually add it to your diet to build tolerance. Try adding cayenne to your soups for delicious flavor, a dash to sauteed veggies, or to beans for a protein-rich, calorielight snack. Feel the burn!
Turmeric is best known for its vibrant yellow hue and use in Southeast Asian dishes, but it's the health benefits behind this spice that really pack a punch.
Turmeric contains a substance called curcumin, which is a naturally occurring plant compound that offers surprising benefits to both your brain and body! Not only does using turmeric in your cooking reduce inflammation, but it can even improve attention and memory, which can ultimately lead to better spirits. Dementia, anxiety, depression, arthritis, and more diseases can be linked to inflammation, so introducing turmeric to your diet may help you fight these risks.
While you could take turmeric in a pill form, we think adding it to your cooking is just more fun. There are plenty of ways to enjoy turmeric as a spice, but we recommend blending it into a morning smoothie, enjoying a warm golden milk, adding a pinch to your egg (or tofu) scramble, or tossing it with roasted veggies for a delicious kick.
Cinnamon
A favorite household spice since the time of the Silk Road, almost everyone can dig out a jar of cinnamon from their pantry. Sure, it's great for whipping up some mouth-watering cinnamon toast or snickerdoodles, but cinnamon is top of the list when it comes to health benefits. Not only does this popular spice provide heart-healthy benefits like reducing blood pressure and lowering cholesterol levels, but it really shines in the blood sugar domain.
For those with Type 2 Diabetes or insulin resistance, cinnamon is the perfect spice. While cinnamon isn't a replacement for diabetes medication, it can help lower blood sugar by slowing the breakdown of carbs, and ultimately improve insulin sensitivity. When you're craving a bit of sweetness but don't want to spike your blood sugar, sprinkle a bit of cinnamon on some yogurt, oatmeal, or fruit.

Home Grown
Many herbs and spices undergo changes in not only flavor and texture when dried and ground but also nutritional content. Certain benefit-providing compounds can be reduced by this process. Fortunately, many culinary herbs are very easy to grow so you can have them fresh at hand anytime!
In Kentucky, herbs like basil, mint, sage, lavender, rosemary, parsley, chicory, chives, chamomile, garlic and cayenne peppers grow well outdoors. Small, low-fuss herbs like basil, chives, mint, parsley, rosemary and lavender grow well in well-draining containers in a sunny spot with at least six hours of sun – preferably, a south-facing window. If you don't have a spot like that or when winter comes, supplement sunshine with a grow light.
As a bonus, gardening has tons of health benefits, so you'll be doing yourself – and your wellbeing – a big favor!
Garlic
My favorite way to add flavor: good ol' garlic. The pungent smell may stay on your fingers for days, but the health benefits will stay with you for years! Allicin, the compound responsible for garlic's distinct aroma, is also the reason for most of the spice's health benefits, like combating sickness, protecting heart health, reducing cholesterol, and lowering blood pressure. In some regions of the world, people will consume raw garlic to protect against fever and illness, offering a boost to their immune systems.
We especially love garlic for its effects on heart health and highly recommend adding it to your diet if you have high blood pressure or hypertension. Even if you're not a garlic lover (or you're just worried about your breath), you can take garlic supplements that will give you similar benefits.
Next time you're standing in your kitchen, keep calm and garlic on by adding the spice to your roast chicken, mixing in with veggies, or making a delicious, easily-spreadable garlic confit.
Ginger
Ginger provides a range of health benefits that you can enjoy in many forms, though your Moscow mule is probably not the best source.
Ginger is often used in alternative medicine. It's also a fantastic spice for adding to your recipes to help with nausea, bloating, and gas. Eating ginger encourages digestion, so this can relieve nausea from not only overeating but also from pregnancy symptoms, chemotherapy, and seasickness. (It's a common misconception that ginger ale will offer these benefits. While the fizziness can be a help to many, there's little to no ginger in most sodas.)
Ginger tea is a quick and easy way to incorporate ginger into your diet, and you can often find ginger tea bags at your grocery store. Ginger gives you a good zing, so we recommend using it to make tangy salad dressings, offset sweet desserts, or add zest to stir-fry dishes. •
“We
When Arlo was born missing his fibula (the long bone on the outside of his left leg), his parents, Emily and Tyler, were left scared and unsure. Arlo’s left leg was shorter than the right; he also had a clubbed foot and only three toes on the left side.
Emily and Tyler immediately started doing research and looking for resources to help their son live a full and active life. That journey lead them to Shriners Children’s as a resource for children with Arlo’s condition, called fibular hemimelia, and brought them to establish care at Shriners Children’s Lexington, where Arlo underwent an amputation on the left leg below the knee.
“The day of surgery was the most difficult day of our lives,” Emily said, of her now 4-year-old toddler who is full of energy and always wearing a smile. “Having to turn our boy over for a major surgery was incredibly hard. However, we knew he was in good hands.”
‘Allows us to get to the heart of healthcare’
Located in a state-of-the-art medical center just across from the UK HealthCare campus, Shriners Children’s Lexington treats more than 16,000 patients each year. The pediatric outpatient surgical and rehabilitation center is one of 20 Shriners Children’s facilities in the U.S. and provides care for orthopedic conditions ranging from the rare to the routine — from common childhood injuries to complex genetic conditions — all regardless of the families’ ability to pay.
Some of the pediatric specialties include clubfoot and other foot disorders, infantile and adolescent hip disorders, hand and upper-extremity disorders, limb deficiencies and amputations, rheumatology, sports injuries, fractures, scoliosis and other spinal deformities and orthopedic conditions related to cerebral palsy, spina bifida, osteogenesis imperfecta and more.
One of the elements that sets Shriners Children’s apart is that it provides care for children regardless of insurance status.
“At Shriners Children’s Lexington, we put patients first. Family-centered care creates an atmosphere of hope and healing. Our medical teams take the time to listen and help patients reach for their own goals,” said Tony Lewgood, administrator for the medical center. “That allows us to get to the heart of healthcare, which should always be providing exceptional care to those who need it. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we’re able to do just that.”
And the organization has been doing it for a long time.
In 2022, Shriners International and Shriners Children’s marked special anniversaries. The fraternity was founded 150 years ago and, 50 years later, the caring and visionary fraternity members founded their official philanthropy. The first Shriners Hospital for Children opened in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1922 to care for children recovering from polio. Lexington’s hospital opened four years later in 1926.
What began as one hospital is now a unique healthcare system with a reputation for finding answers and giving families hope worldwide.
“Our founding Shriners were courageous when they opened our first hospital a century ago to care for children with polio,” Lewgood said. “Today that same courageous spirit is transitioning our system of facilities to meet the current needs of children.” Needs like those of Arlo and his family.
‘We received so much love and support’
“We traveled four hours for our appointment with Dr. Vishwas Talwalkar and were overly impressed with his knowledge and bedside manner,” Emily said. “We left that first appointment with a scheduled surgery date because we loved everything about Shriners Children’s Lexington and Dr. Talwalkar!”
Shriners Children’s is changing lives every day through innovative pediatric specialty care, world-class research and outstanding medical education. Our multiple locations in the United States, Canada and Mexico provide advanced care for children with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate, regardless of the families’ ability to pay.
Over the last 100 years, Shriners Children’s has treated more than 1.5 million children from more than 170 countries, seeing more than 16,000 kids each year right here in Lexington.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the healthcare system depends on the generosity of donors to continue improving the lives of children and families. Here are just some of the ways you can help during 31 Days to Amaze:
• Make a direct donation to Shriners Children’s
• Donate a portion of proceeds on sales of a product(s) or services
• Run a register fundraising campaign
• Provide wall tags for donations in a location
• Allow customers to donate at your business website
• Host an event/fundraiser
• Employee giving with a company match
• Email giving campaign to clients/ vendors
• Invite your customers to take a survey of your service and donate money for every completed survey
• Host a speaker panel event or virtual webinar and donate the entrance fee to Shriners
• Host a virtual auction benefitting Shriners Children’s

It was at Arlo’s first appointment that Dr. Talwalkar recommended he undergo an amputation. He felt confident he would be able to keep Arlo’s calcaneus (heel bone). Keeping as much of the leg as possible was very important to the family.
Many expecting parents do not ever consider that they might find themselves with a child that needs to have a limb amputated. Emily and Tyler certainly counted themselves among that group, but knew Shriners would help them do what’s best for their son.
“The moment we walked into the building here in Lexington we were greeted with smiles, stickers and the sweetest southern accents that make you feel so warm when speaking with the incredible staff here,” Emily said. “We received so much love and support over the next months and it’s felt like our second home ever since.”
That family-centered care is why, for three consecutive years, Shriners Children’s Lexington, in partnership with UK HealthCare’s Kentucky Children’s Hospital, has been named among the Top 50 Best Hospitals for Pediatric Orthopedics by U.S. News and World Report.
Each of the physicians who practice at the Shriners medical center also practice at UK HealthCare, and many are professors at the UK College of Medicine. Consulting physicians from UK HealthCare also serve Shriners patients for things like anesthesia, rheumatology, sports medicine and plastic surgery.
Shriners Children’s Lexington has been serving children and families in the area for nearly 100 years. The first facility opened as a 20-bed wing connected to the children’s ward of Good Samaritan Hospital. Shortly after the hospital opened, it became evident that the 20-bed wing was not large enough to treat the number of children with orthopedic conditions seeking care. A new free-standing hospital with 50 beds opened in 1955 on Richmond Road and a newer hospital was built near that same location in the 1980s. The current medical center opened at 110 Conn Terrace five years ago.
The 110,000-square-foot medical center features two surgical suites, six pre- and post-surgery rooms and a post-anesthesia care unit, a motion analysis laboratory, 20 patient exam rooms in an outpatient clinic, four infusion rooms, a radiology department that provides traditional and low-dose imaging, a rehabilitation gym and treatment rooms for physical and occupational therapy, an observation playground, a research department and a custom prosthetics and orthotics department.
“A significant benefit of our care model is we guide families through the entire journey right here in our facility,” Lewgood said. “This streamlines the patient’s care and allows providers at every level -- from the surgeon to the physical therapist to the radiology tech and more -- to collaborate to ensure the best possible outcome for our kids and our families.”
‘Collaboration with our amazing community partners’
As a nonprofit, Shriners Children’s Lexington relies on the generosity of donors to make these successes possible. Unlike other nonprofit health systems, SCL still receives more than 70% of its operating budget from ongoing philanthropic support. This October, new opportunities are available with the launch of 31 Days to Amaze.
Now in its second year, the philanthropy campaign unites businesses and the community in support of the mission of Shriners Children’s. No matter if a business is big or small, online or at a physical location, Shriners Children’s will help coordinate a participation plan specifically for them.
“This is a phenomenal partnership that allows one of the most trusted brands in pediatric care to impact the lives of children through collaboration with our amazing community partners,” said Wesley Scott, director of philanthropy at Shriners Children’s Lexington. “The whole concept is you have 31 days to give back to our patients in whatever way that fits best for you and your business or organization. It could be a monthlong campaign or a single day. It could be as easy as setting out a donation box all the way up to a portion of all sales in a timeframe being donated back. And everything in between.”
Anyone can participate by shopping at, dining with or supporting the events of the community partners participating in the campaign. For more information, visit 31daystoamaze.org or contact Wesley Scott at 859-268-5768.
All funds donated by the supporting business partners will help ensure that Shriners Children’s Lexington continues to provide children from Lexington and around the globe with world-class, wraparound care like Arlo received.
‘Arlo hasn’t looked back’
Almost from that first visit as a baby, Arlo has also been working with the medical center’s pediatric orthotics and prosthetics services to build custom prosthetic legs to help him remain as active as he would like, which is important for kids as curious and busy as Arlo. He took his first steps when he was less than a year old, and just two weeks after receiving his first prosthetic leg.
“Arlo hasn’t looked back,” Emily said. “He is all over the place and loves wearing his ‘leggy.’”
While Arlo’s tenacity plays a big role in his success, so does Shriners Children’s Lexington and the staff there, Emily said.
“The love for the staff here is unending in our hearts,” Emily said. “Not only is our son thriving but he has been given such amazing opportunities through this organization. Because of the support of Shriners Children’s Lexington and the incredible community of supporters, my family will forever be indebted and thankful.” •

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
Located at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital and with a focus on helping patients recover from injuries and regain their quality of life, the musculoskeletal team at UK HealthCare Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation offers a wide range of expertise and experience that makes it second to none.
Dr. Samuel Byron, DO, holds certifications and special training from the American Osteopathic Board of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine and of Family Practice, and he specializes in OMT services; Dr. Cecil T. Hollen holds a degree in osteopathic medicine from Pikeville College and earned invaluable experience during his residency at the University of Kentucky; Dr. Robert Nickerson is board certified in both Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, as well as electrodiagnostic medicine; Dr. Michael Parrot specializes in outpatient musculoskeletal care with a focus on axial and peripheral joint pain; Dr. Dwan Perry holds a subspeciality certification in sports medicine and is particularly interested in sports injuries, overuse injuries, arthritis and other musculoskeletal complaints; Dr. Nathaniel J. Thomas specializes in the care of amputees and works closely with regional prosthetic specialists; and Dr. Celysse van Zyl offers a special focus on musculoskeletal health as well as OMT.
“Our providers offer state-of-the-art treatment including diagnostic ultrasounds, regenerative medicine and rehabilitation therapies,” the UK HealthCare’s musculoskeletal team explained. “We emphasize non-opioid management of musculoskeletal complaints that help to eliminate the need for surgical intervention, allowing you to maximize your activity level. We then refer to the next level of care if needed.”
Across such a robust team and with access to such advanced treatment methods, UK HealthCare Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation has offered tailored health advice to countless patients. But some of the best words of musculoskeletal health wisdom are those we can all learn from.
“Stretching is one of the most important and easiest ways to improve flexibility and muscle strength,” the team recommended. “If you want to stay healthy in general, you should stretch every day. Not stretching your muscles can lead to a loss of flexibility, tightness and eventually lead to injury or other musculoskeletal conditions.”
And finally, just like so many of life’s most important objectives, staying on top of musculoskeletal health is about diligence and commitment.
“Whether you’re lifting weights, long-distance running or playing golf, setting attainable goals is a great way to focus on physical fitness and your health,” the team concluded. “When setting goals for yourself, you’re able to hone in on areas of exercise you need to improve upon, like dieting, workouts and sports.”
UK HEALTHCARE
Orthopaedic Surgery
At UK HealthCare Orthopaedic Surgery, a team of highly-skilled and considerate physicians offers patients the same advanced care for hip and knee disorders.

SleepHygiene
We don’t just mean taking a shower. Sleep hygiene is a set of behavioral practices that began in the 1970s, intended to help those with mild insomnia work their way to more restful sleep. The concept has seen a resurgence in recent years largely due to the influence of blue light – in particular, our phones. Even if you don’t suffer from insomnia, certain sleep practices and routines could potentially help you get a better night’s sleep. And who doesn’t need a little of that in their lives?!
by amanda harperENVIRONMENT
Your bedroom should be your sanctuary. While it may not always be possible to create the perfect conditions for sleep every single night, you should do what you can to set yourself up for sleep success.
Temperature
Sleep researchers have found that the best temperature for sleep is between 60 to 67°F, with an average of 65° for most people (infants do best with a temperature that’s slightly warmer, up to 69°F).
This is slightly cooler than the ambient temperature most people prefer during the day. Why? The sleep hormone melatonin actually causes your body temperature to drop by up to two degrees, sending warmth to your outer extremities and letting your core cool. Warm temperatures can cause fatigue and restlessness.
Comfort is Key
We don’t have to tell you that having a comfortable, supportive bed is important to sleep. But you might need reminding that having the right pillow and bedding for your needs is just as important. Invest in your sleep comfort!
NOISE
Noise tends to disrupt sleep. While it may seem counterintuitive, many people find that consistent noise helps them sleep better; it can “drown out” random environmental noises, such as passing traffic or barking dogs. Studies consistently show that noise machines do help people sleep better. A recent study showed that people who listened to a white noise machine actually fell asleep 38% faster!
White Noise
Explaining what white noise actually is can be a little complicated and full of jargon. Put most simply, it’s a sound generated by a random signal of equal intensity at different frequencies; the result is a staticky hiss sound that stays at a fairly even volume. This is fairly similar to a fan running – which many people enjoy listening to while sleeping!
Pink Noise
Pink noise has more power at lower sound frequencies, making it a deeper, “warmer” sound. To the ear, pink noise falls somewhere between a hiss and a “shh” sound, somewhat like a steady rainfall.
TOPpicks:
YogaSleep Dohm® Sound Machine (comes in 6 colors $49.99 yogasleep.com)
Brown Noise
This sound has even deeper low frequencies without the high frequency sounds heard in white and pink noises. Brown noise sounds a lot like waves of the ocean. Some studies show that brown noise can help with tinnitus.
Ambient Sounds
Some people prefer sound machines that produce ambient, environmental sounds, such as a jungle or rainy forest. Studies show that these sounds especially help people who struggle to unwind before bed. These can also be more effective if you know that there will be a lot of noises around you while you sleep; the randomized natural sounds can mask the sudden noises going on around you.
Earplugs
For many people, any noise at all can be a problem. Earplugs can dampen or even block incoming sounds. It’s important to select a pair that was designed for sleep, fits comfortably and offers you a level of sound that you’re comfortable with.
ROUTINE
One of the most important foundations of good sleep hygiene – even from its inception – has been setting and maintaining a sleep routine.
Set a Schedule
Go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day – yes, even on weekends. This keeps your body’s rhythms on-beat, so to speak. There are apps that can help you determine when the best times to fall asleep and wake up are for your sleep cycles.
Get Ready
Follow the same steps each night for getting ready can help reinforce to your brain that it’s really time for bed. This can also reduce anxiety about the next day; goodbye, Sunday Scaries! For example, this might look like putting on pajamas, going through your skincare routine, brushing your teeth, getting a glass of water and then reading for an hour. This is also a wonderful way to build a little “me time” into your day!
TOPpicks:
SCREENTIME
KAGED
We are all addicted to screens. Our phones are always within arm’s length, even when we’re watching television and fiddling with our laptop or iPad. Blue light emitted by your screens can disrupt your body’s biological clock, sending signals to your brain that it’s daytime – just before you’re ready to hit the hay.
Power Down
Any light before bed is disruptive to your sleep cycle – yes, even your bedside lamp. The easiest way to get your brain ready for bed is to cut off light sources that aren’t necessary. While you most likely want to be able to see your way to the bed, that makes turning off the TV and your phone the obvious choice. At least an hour before bed, experiment with turning off the TV, putting down your phone and turning off any unnecessary ambient lights.
Night Shift
Most phones have a “night shift” feature that changes the screen’s light output away from the blue light spectrum. This is definitely the wisest choice for anyone who simply can’t put down their phone before bed. Again, it’s best to do this at least one hour before bedtime. If you’re reading in bed, use night mode for the duration.
Screen Your Content
Scrolling through social media, reading the news, streaming the latest episode of your favorite thriller… we’re all guilty of consuming internet content at night that isn’t exactly conducive to sleep. Before bedtime, filter out any digital input that might get your heart rate elevated or mind racing.

Bluegrass Hemp Oil Genesis Blend
WHEN’S IT TIME FOR AN INTERVENTION?
If you have tried just about everything and you’re still struggling to sleep, it may be time to consult a doctor or sleep expert. While OTC treatments may provide some relief, it’s important to rule out sleep disorders such as sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome.
Melatonin
Many people have begun taking melatonin supplements before bed. Studies have shown that this supplement is especially helpful for people who must sleep during daytime hours, such as night shift workers.
Herbal Tea
Many herbal (caffeine-free!) teas designed to act as sleep aids are on the market. The effectiveness obviously varies by the ingredients contained within, but most people find simply enjoying a warm beverage before bed quite soothing.
Lavender
For centuries, lavender’s soothing fragrance has been considered a natural sleep aid. The few studies into its efficacy have shown promising results, but more research is needed. If you enjoy the scent, an essential oil diffuser in your room with lavender oil may be just the ticket.
CBD
Many studies have shown that CBD can help reduce anxiety and help you get a better night’s sleep. While more research may be needed into whether it’s an effective treatment for diagnosed sleep disorders, most anecdotal reports say that CBD does help many people with sleep!
Tryptophan
This amino acid has been shown to improve sleep quality. Your body needs this amino acid and can’t produce its own; in addition to helping you sleep better, ensuring this supplement is a part of your vitamin/dietary routine can improve your overall wellbeing!•

Don’t be fooled, we’re not talking about your grandmother’s wallpaper: these prints are bold, luxurious and vibrant. Think botanicals, high contrast patterns and even textures you can feel to the touch.
Opting for a wallpaper accent wall can add beautiful interest without having to change the entire room.
no.5 Earth Tones
Shades like rust, terracotta, goldenrod and more have won the hearts of homeowners as they add a warmth and a calming feeling to any room.
Incorporating these hues into your furniture or even bedding can create a comfortable lived-in feel while also keeping a sense of sophistication and style.
no.6 Archways
Curved entryways are taking over as the sharp edges and lines of the midcentury-modern movement has started to fade in the background when it comes to interior design.
Not only are they beautiful, they add visual height to any room no matter how tall your ceilings really are. They allow the eye to move upward, creating a taller and more luxurious entrance to any room.
no.7 Colored Cabinets
For those who love a traditinoal English cottage look, you’ll appreciate the rise in the colored cabinet trends as they continue to grow in 2023.
Shades like sky blue, dark green and peacock are popular choices to add a statement to any sized kitchen space. Add a splash to your island or opt for the whole suite to really create a captivating look.

strawbe ies!
Strawberries might be the perfect snack. These sweet little jewels contain tons of antioxidants and nutrients. They contain compounds that are good for heart health and blood sugar control – all with relatively few calories per cup. That's just about perfect!
But cooking with strawberries only makes them more enjoyable. They bring vibrant color and tons of flavor to every dish they appear in! Whether enjoyed raw or cooked, baked or jellied, these babies are just such an incredible summer treat.
Fun fact? Strawberries aren't a berry at all; they're actually considered a "multiple fruit," meaning many tiny fruits are contained within a single strawberry. The "seeds" are actually the fruits (known as "achenes"). The more you know!

pie dough or puff pastry
2 3/4 c. strawberries, stemmed and sliced
2 3/4 c. rhubarb, trimmed and chopped
1/3 c. sugar

Preheat oven to 375°F.
Brush remaining egg wash on exposed pastry. Sprinkle with coarse sugar, if desired.
Bake 30 minutes, rotating pan once halfway through. Look for a bubbling filling and golden crust; err on the side of baking longer without burning crust.
Pour 1/3 c. reserved liquid into a small saucepan. Add lemon juice. Bring to a boil and simmer until thickened, around 5 minutes.

HOW CAN I GET A BETTER INTEREST RATE?
HI ABBY: Lately I’ve been hearing about how interest rates have gone up and how I should review my cash holdings to see what rate I’m getting. I like to play it safe! Are there alternatives to putting my money in the bank that would give me a better return but not be as risky as playing the market?
—CHARLIE CASHHI IAN: Thanks for the question! This is one we’re actually getting pretty often these days. I’ll start by saying, you are hearing correctly. While you should always be checking your rates on cash holdings to ensure you’re getting a good return, right now is an especially good time to do so.
There are many ways to save and grow your money. As a more conservative saver, a simple bank option has been the way to go for many
years. Banks are FDIC insured and have little-to-no risk to your savings. Recently, savers are seeing that there are other low-risk options to investing your money at compelling rates. Most notably, money markets or Treasury Bills (T-Bills) are a couple of options for a less-risky way to invest and maximize cash returns.
Money market funds offer daily liquidity for easy withdrawals, historically no price volatility and again, strong interest rates in the current environment. A T-Bill is a short-term, government-backed security that provides a known return plus the full principal once the bill has matured. Both options currently offer compelling rates with very low risk of losing your initial investment.
If you’d like to know more about how you can take your savings account and invest in these less-risky options, give us a call! We’re here to help.

What's Color? Your
Have you ever borrowed a shirt from a friend only to find that, while it looks fabulous on her, it makes you look kinda sickly? You may have said, “That’s just not my color.”
But what makes something your color? It may feel like you can only find out through trial-and-error, but there are actually shortcuts out there to help you avoid looking washed-out or wonky.
You may already know that understanding your skin’s undertone is absolutely crucial when choosing a foundation. But have you considered how your undertone and overall coloring plays into the rest of your beauty products (and wardrobe)?
We don't profess to be color experts – and yes, those exist, and yes, you can hire one online – but we do have some tried-andtrue tips to help you navigate your color palette!
by amanda harperIf you hadn't guessed, the first place you'll want to start is understanding your skin's undertone. While that can be a complicated process, the shortest version is to consider these questions:
Do you look better in yellow gold (warm), silver (cool) or both (neutral)?
Do you tend to tan (warm), burn (cool) or burn then tan (neutral)?
Do the veins on your wrist look more green or greenish blue (warm), purple or blue (cool) or some mixture of the two (neutral)?
Go outside during the day wearing a white t-shirt and hold a white piece of paper up next to your face. Do you look more yellow (warm), pink (cool) or something else (neutral)?
Try on a foundation that's labeled as a warm tone. Does that look right, even if the shade is too light or dark? Try it with a cool toned foundation.
Tip: Neutral-toned? You get to enjoy the best of both worlds!

SeasonallySpeaking...
Seasonal Color Analysis took off in the 1970s and has stuck around ever since; in short, it tries to sort people with certain coloring combinations into groups named after each of the four seasons. Each season has a dedicated color palette that supposedly works well for members of that group. While the details are debated, here’s a very rough guide.

Suggested colors: Wine, indigo, blue-toned green, cool neutrals, black (think cool-leaning jewel tones)
Your perfect red lip: A deep, blue-based wine
Summer
Cool undertone with less contrast between skin, eyes and hair – generally with lighter hair/eyes
Suggested colors: Kelly green, magenta, white, periwinkle, cool neutrals, lilac (think cool-leaning pastels)
Your perfect red lip: A blue-based red or pink
Autumn
Warm undertone with low contrast between skin, eyes and hair – generally with darker hair/eyes

WITH CYL SAUNA STUDIO
Built around the philosophy that it should be a place where you can “change your life,” CYL Sauna Studio’s locations at CYL Lexington and CYL Louisville offer personalized infrared sauna sessions and infrared lymphatic rolling sessions, offering clients’ first time sauna sessions for free.
“Most people go through their everyday lives with aches and pains that they ignore or just chop up to the excuse of ‘being old,’” explained CYL Lexington and Louisville’s Izzy Peterson. “That is most of the time not the case. We strive to provide knowledge to our clients as to why they have chronic aches and pains and how infrared therapy is the key they need to change their lives.”
CYL has found that, once clients commit to first sessions, the detox that they experience always speaks for itself.
The CYL mission was inspired by a college athlete named Kayla, who found that infrared heat was the most powerful method for relieving her soreness and healing the injuries that would result from playing her sport. From there, she was committed to helping everyone else fall in love with this therapy the way she had. And for Peterson, the journey was similar.
“A few years previous, after having my second child, I was put on blood pressure medication that I was kept on for years, making me feel sick,” she recalled. “Suggested by doctors, I was told to try infrared therapy to provide blood flow to lower my blood pressure, and CYL was the detox that I needed to regulate my body again. Just like that, I was hooked and wanted everyone to share in the ‘feel good’ that this therapy had provided.”
Three years ago, Peterson decided this business was something that Lexington needed, setting up shop in Lexington Green as the city’s first premier infrared studio.
“I didn’t want just any business, I wanted a business that meant something to me,” she said, adding that her own father has been the inspiration behind her constant professionalism and worth ethic.
“Clogged lymphatics and heavy metals are the main causes of aches, fatigue, injury, acne, high blood pressure and many more side effects,” Peterson concluded. “Just one visit shows a client just a glimpse of how good their body can feel with recurring use of our services. Our clients care about our employees and want to hear about our day just as much as we want to hear about theirs. We truly call this a CYL family.”
Scent
If you wear a fragrance regularly, you probably have a very particular way you apply it. Maybe you spray it into the air, then walk into the mist. Maybe you splash a little on your wrists and pat them together. Or maybe you spray until you can barely breathe, then do another spritz for good luck.
There are many methods for wearing fragrance. Everyone swears their method is the right one. But odds are good that your way is… well, wrong. Many of our fragrance tips have been informed by the aesthetic appeal of the process rather than its actual efficacy. We’re here to tell you what works, what doesn’t and what you need to know about making your fragrance last as long as possible.
by Amanda HarperDon’t: Rub It In
Many people think that rubbing their wrists together, then rubbing their wrist along their neck “heats up” the fragrance, making it project further. That’s true, but for the worst reason; this method nearly obliterates delicate top notes – and mashes it together with your skin’s oils – completely changing the way the fragrance smells. The entire point of an alcohol-based perfume is the top, middle and base note structure. The scent gradually changes as you wear it, giving you a different experience throughout the day. Intentionally bringing out the base notes is like skipping the entrée and the dessert to fill up on bread; you’d be better off just buying a less expensive fragrance that consists only of those base notes.
Do: Pulse Points
Rather than rubbing the fragrance around, simply apply it to one or two pulse points and allow it to air dry. This works on the same principle, warming the fragrance to encourage the scent molecules to spread. The key difference is that you’re not interfering with the way the fragrance is supposed to wear. Behind the ear, at the base of the throat, the inner elbow, wrists and behind the knees – more on that later – are popular spots for applying fragrance.
Don’t: Forget That It’s Alcohol!
Certain pulse points simply aren’t a great place to apply fragrance. The alcohol will irritate certain sweat glands and any mucous membranes. Don’t apply perfume near the eyes, nose, mouth, armpits or nether regions – or you will live to regret your choices.
Don’t: Douse
More is more, right? Some folks spray until their hands hurt, then do one more spritz just to be safe. You’ll know these folks by the cloud of scent that precedes them, then lingers hours after they’re gone – and no, this is never a pleasant reminder of their presence.
Do: Gentle Spritz
If your perfume is a spray, hold it roughly six inches away from your skin. The number of spritzes will depend on the strength of the perfume; a strong scent needs just two or three, while a more intimate fragrance can take up to six.
Do: Moisturize
If you want your perfume to last as long as it possibly can, apply an unscented lotion or petroleum jelly to the area you’ll be applying your fragrance. The scent molecules literally stick around a little longer when they have oil to cling to.
Don’t: Walk Into the Mist
This old Hollywood method looks so chic! You spray the fragrance into the air, then step into the mist as it falls. The idea here is that you can’t possibly over-apply, and the fragrance lands all over you rather than in any one spot. This means that the scent is so diluted it has no lasting power. If you’re in a delicate negligee and you’re about to fix up a Manhattan for your would-be suitor, fine, but as a daily practice? This ain’t it.
Do: In the Hair
One thing the mist method gets right? Applying fragrance to your hair is actually a wonderful way to get some staying power! Your hair is porous, so it can trap a lot of scent. Your scalp offers lots of heat to help the scent molecules do their thing. And your hair (hopefully) has some natural oils to hold onto the fragrance. Be aware that alcohol-based perfumes can be drying to your locks and scalp, and if your hair isn’t freshly washed, your natural oils can affect the scent.
Don’t: Stick to the Same Scent Forever
While we fully support having a “signature” fragrance, wearing the same scent for too long can actually be a problem; you can develop anosmia, or nose-blindness, to the scent. This means you’ll apply more and more of it to be able to smell it, wasting perfume and choking everyone around you. Instead, we recommend switching your daily fragrance seasonally and only wearing your signature scent for special moments. •
Scent L go
Longevity
How long a perfume lasts on your skin.
Sillage
The trail a perfume leaves in your wake. Generally, people use this term to refer to how long it lingers after you’ve left the room.
Projection
How far out from you a perfume can be smelled – even if you’re sitting perfectly still.
Top Notes
The most volatile scent compounds, which are the notes you detect in the first 10 minutes after the perfume has been sprayed.
Heart/Middle Notes
Longer-lasting scent compounds that tend to be the signature of a fragrance. These tend to appear 10-20 minutes after spraying.
Base Notes
The longest-lasting scents in a perfume, which offer depth and longevity to a scent.
Eau de Cologne (Cologne)
A scent with a 2-5% concentration of perfume oil to alcohol. This does not refer to a scent exclusively for men, though that is how we now think of them. How are many colognes so strong? The perfume oils used tend to be base notes!
Eau de Toilette (EDT)
A scent with a 5-10% concentration of perfume oil to alcohol.
Eau de Parfum (EDP)
A scent with a 10-15% concentration of perfume oil to alcohol.
Extrait
A scent with a 15-45% concentration of perfume oil to alcohol (or carrier oil).

COMMONWEALTH PLASTICS
Dr. Jared Nimtz
Traditional liposuction is a great way to remove fat from your belly, thighs, arms, back, chin, etc., but with high-definition liposuction at Commonwealth Plastic Surgery, we are able to contour close to the skin, sculpting the body to reveal the muscles and curves below.
How Does High-Definition Liposuction Differ?
One of the downfalls of traditional liposuction is the possible result of looser skin when fat is removed. Using high-definition liposuction with Vaser liposuction, I am able to get some beneficial skin tightening not available with traditional liposuction equipment. Vaser liposuction adds ultrasound energy, removing fat through a gentler suction process. This allows for smoother contours with less pain and recovery time than traditional liposuction.
Can You Combine High-Definition Liposuction with Other Procedures?
I often combine this technique with Renuvion, or J Plasma. Renuvion adds radio frequency and heat energy to the underlying tissue, causing it to constrict and tighten while preserving the health of the tissue. Renuvion with Vaser is a great option for patients who have excess fat and some amount of skin laxity needing tightening, but who have good skin elasticity. Renuvion with Vaser liposuction is key to achieving a more precise body contour. When we combine Vaser liposuction with body contouring procedures like a tummy tuck, I can offer more precise sculpting of your structures below the skin, like your muscles or hourglass shape. We can even add Renuvion to a facelift, tummy tuck, arm lift or thigh lift for more skin tightening.
What is Recovery for Liposuction?
Liposuction typically requires one to two-weeks of downtime depending upon the area and the amount of liposuction. By 4-6 weeks out from your surgery, you should be able to go back to exercise and full normal activity with your surgeon’s evaluation and approval. Because surgery causes some amount of swelling to the surgical area, it is important to wear compression garments for one month and to be patient as your swelling resolves. Your final contour should be visible 3-4 months from the date of surgery.

Beth says “Having our medical professionals and support team to rely on is crucial because if you don’t mindfully do this, you will just gain the weight back. We can help you make smarter choices.” Most weight loss injection candidates have 30-70 pounds to lose. For those closer to their goal weight, CoolSculpting® Elite and CoolTone are a great option. Offering many services under one roof allows the team at Hourglass to connect with clients and develop comprehensive treatment plans for their aesthetic and wellness needs. The team’s dedication to growth and learning ensures that more clients can enjoy the benefits of non-surgical aesthetic procedures. FADED
Angela Starr
Founded under a different name in 2007 then rebranded as FADED in 2019, this all-inclusive hair care studio specializes in men’s hair and self care. FADED offers shampoo, shoulder massages and neck trims for every client.
“We specialize in men’s hair and clean fades, yet include the extra stuff to also create a relaxed environment that encourages busy people to take a moment and indulge themselves,” said owner Angela Starr. “Men aren’t typically the ones for spa days, so we offer quick and effective self care for the busy person in any walk of life.”
Starr and her team found that many people realized just how important self care is during the pandemic, when such critical services for self esteem were unavailable. Today, she feels that FADED is the best way to serve her community and help a wide range of clients achieve their best selves.
“We love being a diverse group with a clientele that is just as diverse,” she explained. “We create a safe space to relax for our staff and community. We see people through the best and worst times that life provides and we are happy to be a part of their paths.”

EMPOWER AESTHETICS & WELLNESS
At Empower Aesthetics & Wellness, clients find the perfect balance between the individualized care they want and the expert guidance that they need.
“We believe that the industry is too overwhelming and full of ‘smoke and mirrors,’ that clients are often left confused and unsure of how to get the result they want,” explained Empower’s Dr. Morgan Blanton and Luwanna Callebs. “Yet, many medical spas still allow clients to direct what treatments are needed. Therefore, we provide individualized and tailored treatment plans to take the guesswork away from our clients.”
Across a wide range of services powered by pioneering technologies and tools, Empower Aesthetics & Wellness is dedicated to helping their clients reach the ultimate goal: feeling empowered and strong in everything that they do.
“We want our clients to have the confidence to take the center stage of their own life,” said Dr. Blanton and Callebs. “It’s no secret that when we feel good about our appearance, we are able to show up to life’s events as the best, most confident version of ourselves.”

COOLBLUE LEX
Amanda Harms
Amanda Harms co-founded CoolBlue Lex in partnership with Dr. Schantz in 2018 because of the need for more comprehensive knowledge about non-invasive body contouring in central Kentucky.
It’s no secret that aging, metabolic changes, and genetics affect your ability to reshape your body with diet and exercise alone. Amanda says, “Sometimes you can do everything right, and those lifestyle changes are still not enough to take care of stubborn fat.” Fortunately, there is a safe and scientifically proven way to manage that stubborn fat and unlock your confidence.
Having an experienced CoolSculpting provider can make the difference between achieving a beautiful, non-surgical result versus seeing only slight changes. In a time where there are new fat loss procedures, tools and prescriptions available hitting the market daily, look for someone who has consistently delivered results, not someone pushing the newest thing. Amanda is the most experienced CoolSculpting provider in the state of Kentucky; practicing the longest and performing the most treatments.
Dr. Schantz says, “Amanda’s artful work has secured her reputation as a provider who helps patients create meaningful changes both internally and externally. From the beginning, Amanda set herself apart in the world of noninvasive body contouring with her strong grounding in science and healthcare. She is extremely knowledgeable on educating patients as to what is possible with various treatment methods for self-improvement. When someone has a consultation or treatment with Amanda, they feel relaxed and trust that she has their best outcomes in mind.” When it comes to being realistic about outcomes, each body has a unique shape. Amanda notes, “Sometimes surgery is the better option, but you would never know that unless you went to an expert who is partnered with a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr, Stephen Schantz. If someone is a good candidate for both, I’ll be as clear as I can about the results you can expect from a noninvasive treatment so you have the best knowledge in front of you to make a decision.”
It’s no surprise that with this approach and the latest technology at hand, Amanda is the #1 CoolSculpting provider in Kentucky. Amanda’s “patient first” mentality and motivation to help as many people find confidence as possible led to opening the new CoolBlue Lex location, completely dedicated to CoolSculpting and CoolTone treatments, in March of this year.
STRETCH LAB
The team at StretchLab is helping Lexington achieve new levels of flexibility and comfort in lives, one session at a time.
“Your body spends its day trying to hold you together, restricting motion, tightening muscles, pulling you back in,” the StretchLab team explained. “StretchLab launches you back into your life, propelling you forward with newfound energy and freedom that comes from your body moving, working and feeling exactly the way you want it to. Every aspect of our day revolves around movement.”
With a process that is focused on listening to clients’ bodies and partnering with them on their flexibility journeys, StretchLab helps clients achieve healthier outcomes that help them in every area of their lives.
“In your 25- or 50-minute, oneon-one session, you will work with one of our trained Flexologists who will guide you through a series of stretches to meet your specific needs through your customized program,” the team said. “Having an increased range of motion and properly-balanced body will increase your performance not only in your physical activity, but in your daily routine as well. If you haven’t had an assisted stretch before, there is no time like the present!”

SOLUTIONS FUNCTIONAL & HORMONE MEDICINE/IV VITAMIN BAR
As a functional medicine office that emphasizes hormone health and “upstream” explanations for common health issues not often explored in traditional tracks of care, Solutions IV Vitamin Bar & Hormone Renovation is led by the combined 45 years of experience in clinical practice, education and service of its leaders Mandi Snell and Keisha Snipp.
“We are not a medspa, but rather, an academically-driven, sciencebearing practice interested in health promotion and disease prevention,” explained Snell, who has been a nurse practitioner for 28 years in family practice, acute care and functional medicine; and Snipp, who has nearly two decades of experience in medical administration. “Our vehicle for this service is education for our clients.”
Through its inviting infusiontherapy lounging space, comprehensive lab services and peptide therapy, Solutions IV Vitamin Bar & Hormone Renovation is a think tank and medical practice, all in one.
“We offer data that can validate a client’s symptom profile,” added Snell and Snipp. “The best way to explore how our offerings can help you is with a 30-minute inquiry visit, offered to new clients who are interested in our service.”

take your fitne to new heights with the fly witches
when the idea of opening a bungee studio came into Callie Thornton’s mind, she dove in head first and never looked back.
“My vision for the studio started when I came across a viral video of bungee fitness, a low impact, high resistance way of working out,” explains Callie. After her search for a studio around her in Kentucky came up empty handed, she immediately knew what she had to do. “I wanted to give Winchester and surrounding areas a place where one could come to enjoy exercising in a community that supported you and made you fall in love with yourself, all while getting healthy!”
In comes The Fly Witches, a fitness studio delivering high-quality, fun classes, including bungee, bounce, and yoga! Whether you’re looking to clear your mind with a relaxing yoga session, get a total body workout with bounce group fitness, or participate in a high-energy bungee workout, The Fly Witches are ready to help you soar past your fitness goals.
“As a society we are always telling women how to look, what to eat, and everything under the sun,” says Callie. “I want to be a small part of the change to eliminate those standards. We are here to provide a fun way to workout that has a low impact on your body, not to tell you that you need to lose weight or tone up. If that is what you are wanting to do, we are here for it and will help you, but first and foremost, we are here to have fun and encourage you!”
callie’s passion for helping others comes from her late grandmother, who Callie says believed in her more than anyone. She says, “I knew the day I lost her that I would go through with opening the studio and I would make it a place unlike any other. A place that made you feel welcomed, safe, supported, and cared for.”
The Fly Witches has more than achieved what Callie set out to do, with some clients coming in as a stress reliever, some for fun, and others for a place of community. “The one thing you will always find here is fellowship,” Callie smiles. “I never get tired of hearing about the difference we made in someone’s life, it’s such an honor and a privilege.”
If you’re looking for a fresh, exciting exercise routine, look no further than The Fly Witches. Sticking to a plan can be tough, but with a team dedicated to challenging you, exciting you, and helping you reach your goals, you’ll be flying to new heights in no time. Plus, you’ll enjoy every step of the process with your fellow witches behind you!
Looking for weekend plans? Come celebrate The Fly Witches second birthday and grand opening of another classroom at Fly Festival on June 24th! Care There down
This is a topic that’s tough for a lot of folks. It can be embarrassing to talk about! The biggest problem with our taboo reguarding talking about our intimate areas? It can be hard to know if what you’re experiencing is completely normal or not. And while the “feminine care” aisle of your local drugstore offers tons and tons of products, it’s almost impossible to know which product is going to be the best one for your needs. Fortunately, these conversations are becoming more open. Companies are recognizing that women want – and deserve – products that answer intimate care concerns. We’ll break down a few common issues and share what’s worked for us!
by amanda harperDryness
There are many reasons you might be experiencing vaginal dryness. Commonly, dips in your estrogen levels – such as those caused by menopause and breastfeeding – can result in this uncomfortable condition. Symptoms may include an itching, burning sensation that can ultimately lead to pain, often during sex. You may have an increase in yeast infections or UTIs. Only your doctor can properly diagnose the cause of these symptoms, as they overlap with many other conditions.
Estradiol
If the symptoms of menopause or vaginal dryness are overwhelming, your doctor may prescribe estradiol. This hormone is the most abundant estrogen produced by the ovaries before menopause. You can supplement it via pills, injections, vaginal rings, transdermal patches, vaginal suppositories, creams and more; talk to your doctor about which form may be easiest for you to use and which may be most effective for your needs. It does have some side effects that you’ll want to discuss and weigh.
Ospemifene
This is another medication that your doctor may prescribe if you are experiencing vaginal dryness. Unlike estradiol, this is not a hormone; instead, it acts like estrogen in some parts of the body and is part of a class of drugs called selective estrogen receptor modulators. Like most medications, this does have some side effects.
Hyaluronic Acid Suppositories
We get it; this is a deeply unsexy phrase. But if you’re experiencing vaginal dryness, it may be a godsend!
You may recognize hyaluronic acid from your skincare routine. It’s a slippery substance that your body produces naturally to do things like keeping your joints moving smoothly and helping retain hydration.
According to suppository brand Revaree®, 84% of women studied saw an improvement in vaginal dryness when using hyaluronic acid suppositories. One of the consequences of vaginal dryness is that your tissues become irritated, leading to itching and burning. The moisture attracted by hyaluronic acid can create an environment that allows these tissues to heal; 86% of users reported a reduction of these symptoms!
You don’t need a prescription to give hyaluronic acid suppositories a try. You can purchase them online or at some drugstores. It has fewer side effects than estradiol and can be combined with most medications (but still talk to your doctor or pharmacist about possible interactions).
Wait... is it your bath?
We love tub time as much as the next gal, but all those bubbles and fizzies can be a problem for your lady bits. If you take baths and experience irritation, UTIs, yeast infections or other discomfort, you may want to read on.
Almost all bath products – from liquid bubble baths to bath bombs – contain fragrances, dyes, soaps and oils that disrupt the microorganisms that work to keep everything in ship shape. This could alter your pH, leading to irritation or even infections. Even “natural” bath goods can upset this delicate balance.
That’s not to say you have to give up baths! Instead, take baths as a special relaxation treat rather than a frequent part of your care routine. If you’ve been out and about – or you’re sweaty, dirty or grimy – take a quick shower with soap first. It’s also a good idea to do a quick rinse after your bath, then pat everything dry with a clean towel.
Don’t use bath products that contain soap –including any bubble baths. Anything heavily scented or deeply dyed is best nixed. And avoid products containing glitter (yes, even if it’s “body-safe”) or glycerin. Instead, choose bath salts, oils and bombs that are designed for sensitive skin.
Skin Care
You probably don’t think about your downstairs beauty routine. But your skin in that region can be quite temperamental. A boutique industry has cropped up to help address sensitive, dry, bumpy, irritated skin in sensitive spots. One of our favorite brands is Fur. They launched with the idea of helping people with body hair maintenance, but the founders quickly realized that people needed gentle, effective skincare for their intimate areas (their Ingrown Microdart Patch is a lifesaver!)
If you have nagging skin concerns in that region, speak to your gynecologist first. They can often diagnose the issue and help you build a care plan to rectify it. But they may ultimately suggest you go see a dermatologist.

Inescapable Infections
So many women are at their wit's end with recurring UTIs, cases of bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections and more. If this sounds like you –and you're already in regular conversations with your health care team – we can help you build a toolkit to at least find some relief.
Cranberry Supplements
Taking cranberry extract supplements daily seems to help prevent recurring urinary tract infections. They also contain antioxidants, can help increase "good" cholesterol, protect against stomach ulcers and offer a host of other health benefits.
Urinate Often
The best thing you can do for your urinary tract health is... well, to go! Stay well-hydrated, urinate after any sexual activity and go when you gotta go (holding it can strain your bladder muscles and could allow bacteria to multiply within your bladder.)
Boric Acid Suppositories
Combined with a doctor's prescribed treatment, a boric acid suppository can help resistant or recurrent vaginal infections, particularly bacterial vaginosis (BV). Simply insert a capsule before bed and wear a panty liner overnight. You may wish to rinse the area in the morning.
Vitamin E
Doctors recommend this vitamin to treat certain types of vaginal inflammation. One study shows vitamin E may help with vaginal atrophy – a thinning of the vaginal walls due to lack of estrogen, which changes your pH and can lead to recurrent infections. You can purchase vitamin E suppositories or apply vitamin E oil directly to the vulva, which can help soothe itching, burning and inflammation.
Baking Soda
Earlier, we discussed how baths may be causing your discomfort. But they may also be a solution! Adding up to a Tablespoon of baking soda to your bathwater may help calm the itching.
Probiotics
furyou.com)
The (scientific) jury is still out on whether probiotics actually help support the vaginal bacterial biome. But if you've tried everything else, we'll chalk this one up to can't hurt; worst case scenario, you're helping out your gut health! Take probiotic supplements and/or consume probiotic-rich foods such as yogurt, kombucha, kimchi and sauerkraut. Adding up to a Tablespoon of baking soda to your bathwater may help calm the itching. •
Summer SLIM Down with
Summertime is here! That means it’s swimsuit season. Hourglass Aesthetics can help you slim down for the summer as you work toward your weight loss goal or simply wish to target those last few body contours for a more sculpted physique.
Just entering her fifties and after having three children relatively late in life, Hourglass Founder, Creator, and CEO Beth Hourigan understands how important it is to feel good and look good. This is precisely why Hourglass Aesthetics expanded with a wellness division in 2020 and began focusing on and developing its programs. “We spend time and money and invest in our appearance. However, feeling good on the inside is not as easy as a toxin appointment. It takes time and energy to navigate where to go and what to do to feel great when we wake up every day, and that is what the professionals at Hourglass have already done for you. We have already navigated and created a path to better health.”
Beth’s entrepreneurial spirit and interest in aesthetics were inspired by her maternal grandmother, who ran an insurance agency and sold a European skincare line out of her home. And so, from an early age, Beth’s interest in makeup and skincare went deeper to include skin care, wellness and self-care. She planned to attend business school throughout high school and college, eventually earning her MBA and working in medical aesthetics.
Hourglass Aesthetics opened in July 2017 in an 800-square-foot space, focusing primarily on lash extensions, injectables, and facials. In under six years, it has grown into an all-encompassing wellness spa four times the size with medical professionals on staff. “We are passionate about what we do,” says Beth. “Everyone here has their specialty and all of our professionals are at the top of their game. We have a very robust business with best-in-class lasers, services, and medical-grade skin care. Hourglass administration closely follows trends in the field and makes sure that all of our professionals are trained by the best thought leaders in the industry. We don’t want to miss anything, including providing topnotch customer service.”
For those with more weight to lose, Hourglass Aesthetics’ weight loss injections and nutrition guides can help you change your eating habits and commit to healthy lifestyle changes. Their medical weight loss program includes the newest injectable peptides (similar to familiar name brands Ozempic® and Mounjaro®) to lose weight safely. Beth personally has the lab work to prove the positive results she has experienced, including lowered LDL (“bad” cholesterol) and triglycerides and higher HDL or “good” cholesterol.
Beth Hourigan, OwnerBeth says most weight loss injection candidates have approximately 30-70 pounds to lose. “These peptides promote delayed gastric emptying to make you feel full faster so you don’t think about food all day.” With injectable peptides, there are no jittery side effects, some are combined with a B-complex to negate any potential nausea. Hourglass Aesthetics can also test for hormone imbalances and provide hormone therapy to work hand-in-hand with your weight loss treatments and improve their efficacy. “Having our medical professionals and support team to rely on is crucial because if you don’t mindfully do this, you will gain the weight back. We can help you make smarter choices.”
For more immediate results for those who have already lost weight and are within 10-15 pounds of their goal, Beth recommends CoolSculpting® Elite. “Targeting pockets of fat such as love handles, abdomen, and bra fat, CoolSculpting® Elite is FDA-cleared freezing technology to destroy fat cells in as many as nine body areas. CoolSculpting® Elite works even better and more efficiently than the older first generation of CoolSculpting® and is only administered by medical professionals at Hourglass, a standard I set,” Beth says. “Each of our nurses or nurse practitioners has attended CoolSculpting University, an elite, comprehensive 3-day training program.” Once the fat is gone, Hourglass Aesthetics’ noninvasive CoolTone® device can supplement your fitness regimen using muscle stimulation to strengthen and tone the abdominals, buttocks, and thighs. According to Beth, CoolTone® stimulates contractions equivalent to 30,000 sit-ups in 30 minutes with no downtime!
Throughout June, Hourglass Aesthetics is running a Buy 4 CoolSculpting® Elite Cycles, Get 4 Free “treat to complete” special. (Expect maximum results 90 days from the last treatment, says Beth.) Though they grew up just a few blocks from each other, Brittany and Clay Mulligan never met until Clay sat down for a slice of pizza at the local pizzeria where Brittany worked.
“He started talking to me, and I thought he was a creep, but a cute creep, and the rest is history” laughs Brittany.
With the Bluegrass State as their forever home, the couple chose to keep their wedding local, with the ceremony being held at Sts. Joseph and Paul Catholic Church, and reception at Green River Distilling Co. Beautiful and classic, the pair opted to keep the church decorated with florals from Easter the weekend before, which allowed the beauty of the church, and the bride, to shine. The reception was equally as classic and beautiful, with live flower arrangements at each table along with floating candles and live greenery. Luckily, the reception space came equipped with a large dancefloor, where guests enjoyed dancing the night away with the new bride and groom!
“I thought he was a creep, but a cute creep...” - BRITTANY
While planning their wedding, the couple wanted a way to honor those they had lost and found a small, yet sentimental way to include them in their big day. “To honor the grandparents we had both lost, I had my grandparents’ pictures wrapped around my bouquet and Clay had his grandparent’s pictures pinned to the inside pocket of his tux” says Brittany.
When asked about their favorite moments from the day, the couple laughed and explained that it may sound cliche, but the entire day was wonderful. From the bride’s first look with her dad and brother to her nephew and ring bearer humorously dropping Clay’s ring during the ceremony, there wasn’t a single aspect of the day the couple didn’t enjoy.
To other couples planning their dream wedding, Brittany and Clay have only one piece of advice: “Don’t stress! It will all work out beautifully in the end. All that matters is that at the end of the day you will be married to the person you love, the rest is just details.”

Mary Quinn Ramer meet
Mary Quinn is a native of Danville and after a transfer from Meredith College NC at the end of her freshman year back to home turf, she graduated from Centre with a double major in History and French. Growing up with a mother who was a French teacher, meant that this language wasn’t so “foreign” to her, and Danville, with it’s rich and significant past had given her an early love of especially American history.
She had always assumed she would progress to law school, but as is so often the case, life had other plans. Part of her financial aid packet required an assigned work study program. This could have been in any one of the various aspects of college life; the library; the athletic complex, but she was assigned to the communications office. “This was really where I first started to get the sense of what it meant to be in the communications and marketing industry,” she said.
Finding that she loved this work, Mary Quinn did an internship the last semester of her senior year with Preston Osborne, a public relations agency in Lexington. At the time Mary Quinn joined the firm, it was evolving and getting out of just politics and public affairs and doing mass consumer campaigns in various industries. It was towards the accounts that were hospitality related that Mary Quinn kept sensing a gravitational pull. “I never once had thought that there was this whole industry, and so in many ways when I reflect back, I realize there was a tremendous amount of serendipity along the way” she said.
In 2005 Mary Quinn made the move to tourism full time and cut her teeth at the Danville, Boyle County Tourism office which not only was her hometown but also the site of the Battle of Perryville. “I had spent a lot of time in college as part of my history major studying this battle and could appreciate it from a tourism product perspective. I knew what a gem the battlefield was and how authentically it had been preserved. Not much has changed in Boyle County in the ensuing 100 years,” she said.
The opportunity to work with David Lord who was at the time President of The Lexington Convention and Visitor’s Bureau in Lexington, presented itself in 2007 and Mary Quinn took it. “This name didn’t mean much to people and was a bit of a mouthful, so in 2013 the switch to VisitLex was made, she said, “there are fourteen other Lexingtons around the country, so it made perfect sense to lean into the call letters of our airport,” she explained.
David Lord decided to retire in 2010 after 20 years of service and immediately following the first Three-Day World Equestrian Games. Then, after a short stint by the subsequent president, upon his retirement, Mary Quinn decided to apply for the position. “Okay, I said to myself, if you’re going to make a run for this you probably should do it now, because if you don’t, you may well have to wait a decade or maybe two for this opportunity to come around again.”
At this point Mary Quinn had evolved into the Vice President of marketing having started originally on the tourism side which was much more focused on local Lexington attractions and the restaurant scene. Nervous about her lack of experience with the convention aspect of the business she diligently went about studying and learning everything she could about this very important component of tourism. Her conscientiousness paid off and in January 2015 the board of commissioners appointed her as President of VisitLex.
Since then she has steered the agency through an office relocation to the beautiful renovated Old Courthouse – itself a tourist attraction with a restaurant owned by Nationally known Chef Ouita Michel, welcomed a new state-of-the-art Convention Center with unique amenities into being, and, most challenging of all, guided the local industry through a devastating global pandemic.
The mission of VisitLex is to market and sell Lexington’s Bluegrass region by driving economic impact through tourism and meetings to enhance the quality of life for Lexingtonians. and for the last eight years Mary Quinn Ramer, as President of the organization, has been making sure the agency does exactly just that.
by Kate Savage | photo courtesy VisitLexAll of a sudden in March 2020 Mary Quinn found that instead of finding ways to invite and convince people outside the community to come and visit Lexington, she was talking to the people inside the industry and trying to support those who were dealing with the fall out from covid travel imposed restrictions and the evisceration of the tourism market. “We spent a lot of our time just trying to do the best we could to nurture those in our industry that were dealing with people losing their jobs. GMs of hotels doing everything from engineering to the maintenance to the changing of the beds because they were working with a skeleton crew” she said. They spread the word among local residents encouraging them to support the restaurants they loved by ordering carry-out. Everyone was scrambling.
In addition, Mary Quinn found she had to become a champion for the industry at the legislative level. “There were so many questions that I didn’t have an answer for. Obviously, I wanted to put on a brave face, but I also wanted to advocate for the industry when Congress was meeting and determining what types of assistance would be available at the federal level. I wanted tourism to have a seat at that table,” she said. “I think it’s fair to say that our industry was by far the hardest hit and will be the last to recover. Really, they’re not expecting travel to make a full recovery until the end of 2024,” she added.
Mary Quinn is passionate about her industry, not just the joy it brings to visitors but also the opportunities that it provides for people who want to get a start, work hard and rise through the ranks. She tells stories of people who started as bellhops or at the front desk who have risen to be GM’s of international hotels. One of the things laid bare by the pandemic has been the critical necessity of service industry workers. Every restaurant, hotel or convention center needs someone to wash dishes and put up the chairs. Someone to cut the grass, provide transport, repair the fences. It’s easy to overlook all the ancillary services that feed into the overarching designation of tourism.
Post-pandemic Mary Quinn considers her advocacy work has become even more significant. Much of what she has to do is to raise awareness of how travel is an economic engine that works hard for the commonwealth and employs tens of thousands of Kentuckians, from entrylevel workers to entrepreneurs and executives, but also she is anxious to make sure that the people in Lexington feel really proud about their city and excited about the
visitor economy growth and supportive of VisitLex’s endeavors. Data and research VisitLex can provide is often critical input at the local government level when it comes to thorny issues such as regulating Airbnbs or the Urban Services Boundary. In Kentucky tourism generates $11.2 billion in annual spending, $823 million in state and local tax revenue and more than 92,000 Kentucky jobs.
No secret are Lexington’s signature industries of bourbon and horses, both unique to the Bluegrass. But Mary Quinn is quick to point out that there is a package that goes with the branding. It’s not just the horse in a stall but it’s the horse within the context of the landscape – the rolling hills, the beautiful blue sky, the white fences, the races, the spectacular farms. Similarly the bourbon industry with its tours, trails and tasting rooms. Both industries owe their successes to the land and limestone.
The completion of the convention center – Central Bank Center, has given VisitLex a new shiny coin to add to its purse of offerings. The design is really different and meeting planners are intrigued by the space as well the walkability of downtown, the fact that every major hotel has a complimentary shuttle from the airport, and Town Branch Park will come online in 2025 providing an adjacent green space and outside opportunities and programming that will be readily accessible.
When asked about where she sees Lexington growing in the future, Mary Quinn cites the great potential of the Manchester Street area and the Distillery District. She is excited about how much of it has evolved organically and the many future opportunities that still exist along that corridor.
Whilst she is passionate about her industry, Mary Quinn is also as committed to the community. “I want to find the sweet spot and I absolutely want our brand awareness to grow. I would love for people to talk about Lexington the same way they talk about Ashville, Savannah and Charleston – that’s aspirational for me,” she said.
However that said, she remains anxious that this not be such a commercial exploitation that it’s attained at the price of Lexington’s identity. “I want the community to grow alongside us. If there is one thing that keeps me up at night, it’s that 20 years from now I’ll wake up to realize Lexington has lost its soul,” she said. But surely, with these driving sentiments in her heart, she should rest easy. •
“I want the community to grow alongside us. If there is one thing that keeps me up at night, it’s that 20 years from now I’ll wake up to realize Lexington has lost its soul.”
