Dan Ei in the 21st Century
As the times change, many singles today find themselves looking for a set of rules to follow in the continually evolving dating scene. With the addition of online dating, speed dating, social networking and text messaging, we begin to wonder, is etiquette completely dead? We asked local expert Diane Abadi, owner of the Etiquette and Protocol School of Lexington, for her advice and in-depth knowledge on the rules and expectations of the dating scene today. Holding a Masters of Education and certificates from both The Protocol School of Washington and The American School of Protocol, no one is better qualified to guide us in our quest for good etiquette. And as it turns out, etiquette is neither dead nor outdated but rather, the rules and expectations are continually adapting to the new dating situations singles encounter today.
are certain nuances, rather than set

Money may not be able rules, that are expected of both men women dating today. She explains to buy you class, but and that “chivalry is really important, we’re all looking for those little good etiquette is still because cues of interest,” as well as it being the worth its weight in gold. polite thing to do. But etiquette doesn’t
More than a specific set of rules to become upper crust or snobbish, Diane describes etiquette as the “social guidelines and perimeters to help you live a quality life.” These guidelines not only help provide common ground for all parties involved, but also keep people safe. Especially with the growth of online dating, etiquette helps to provide for safe encounters. As Diane puts it, online dating is the “wild wild west, anyone can say and do anything.” Because of the anonymity available through the Internet, Diane suggests taking things slow, working up from talking online to emailing, then talking on the phone, and finally going out on a date. However, she recommends that we remember, no matter how we meet people, the first date is always the first date, and protocol does not change.
Though communication may have been going on for some time before the first actual date, remember that this person is still a stranger. Online, phone, and text communications “don’t really show a lot about the personality of that person, or that traits of that person… they’re little sound bites of knowledge” Diane warns. Instead, take precautions such as letting a friend know where you going to be when meeting up with someone new, and don’t share too much personal information. It is so easy to track someone, nowadays, so still look at your first date with someone you met online as just that, a first date. In the end Diane teaches that, “by following the same social practices of a first date with someone you’ve just met, you not only set a precedent for accepted etiquette and behavior, but also remain safe.” Aside from online dating, one of the biggest questions both single men and women find themselves asking today, revolve around gender roles in dating. Are there still certain roles expected of men and women in today’s evolving dating scene? According to Diane, yes there are. She explains that that there 30

rest solely on men; women should be courteous and receptive to a man’s intentions to be chivalrous, and both parties should equally respect one another. These traditional gender roles, however, seem conflicting with some types of dating, such as same-sex relationships. But what Diane explains, is that the rules associated with gender roles are not conflicting or outdated, only catching up. She explains that without being embraced on a national scale, the rules and expected etiquette of same-sex dating does not yet have a framework to which it can apply. Diane says that, “etiquette should be the same regardless of gender,” only, “there are certain nuances specific to same sex dating and manners which have yet to be determined.” She expects that as same sex-dating is embraced, and the frameworks develop, etiquette and protocol will follow suite. So as times and technologies change, it seems that etiquette continues to find its place in dating, constantly shifting and adapting to the new mediums made available. Rather than an outdated custom, proper dating etiquette provides guidelines and protocols to approach any situation singles find themselves in today. Some of Diane’s top dating tips: - Treat everyone with courtesy and respect because it’s the right thing to do. - First impressions are everything. You have just five seconds to make a good one. - Don’t lie or embellish facts, honesty is so important; it sets up the framework for a good relationship. - Dress the part. Always dress up a notch on the first date! Chivalry is really important. It’s the little things that count! - People that have good manners generally are people who know how to treat people with courtesy and respect. Nice people really do finish first! - For your first date, engage in small talk. It helps break the ice and puts everyone at ease! - Remember: Money doesn’t buy class, Etiquette and Protocol and the greatest class distinction is the School of Lexington lack of social skills Owner, Diane Abadi

The Couch Surfer In The ‘Buf’
The couch surfer: A guy that is typically charming, seemingly intelligent with tons of charisma, which will make you adore him. You will find yourself temporarily under his spell and he will know exactly what to do, to land on your couch. The couch surfer will suck you in with grandiose dreams and big blue soulful eyes, actually making you feel inspired by him. He will likely own a guitar.
Until…. that one day. You will come home unexpectedly from work in the middle of the afternoon and walk through your front door. The shades will all be shut, dirty socks will be on the floor and he will be watching a movie, of which he rented on your Direct TV, laying on your couch. Something will come over you and your face will turn red. You will whisk by him with tightened lips. Being an experienced couch surfer, he will panic, call you sweet baby and slyly jump off of the couch complimenting your outfit.
He will frequently surprise you with flowers and it will not be revealed that he picked the flowers from your neighbor’s yard until Mr. Dan knocks on your door informing you that your new found boyfriend had been spotted multiple times on his hands and knees with scissors, in the rose garden.

Online Dating Not As Creepy As You Think
Thanks to random news reports of violence and danger that stems from dating online, it’s no surprise that a lot of people are timid to give it a try. However, a lot of people have pretty great success with online dating. While it’s essential to play it safe and smart, there’s no need to be all skeeved out by searching the internet for your next date!
Date Scene
A great place to start is researching what sort of site will work best for you. Are you interested in settling down? Match.com caters to compatability on a deep level with the goal of marriage in mind. However, about 25% of people do not qualify for Match.com’s system and it is strictly for heterosexual matches (their alternative site for same-sex relationships, Compatable Partners, doesn’t have the same extensive match system.) OKCupid is a free service that matches people by area and an extensive database of personality questions and interests. Adult dating services offer no strings attached hookup possibilities while other sites offer more “specialized” services. Figure out what you want and join a site that caters to you. About. com offers reviews of dating sites and an extensive list of free services. Next, you’ll set up your profile. Provide relevant information about your hobbies and interests without giving too much away. Since the goal is to get people to strike up conversation but not stalk you, be sure to not include many details of where you work, play or live. Be honest! Getting caught up in a lie is always awkward. OKCupid’s blog condenses a lot of information they get from their dating service, polls, surveys and other user data to provide extensive information about what works for online dating. Your profile picture is exceptionally important as a first impression to everyone who sees you online. The OKCupid blog reports that women receive the most contacts when their photo features them making eye contact and making flirty or smiling faces. Men, on the other hand, receive the most contacts when they’re not making eye contact and not smiling. So mysterious! They also suggest doing something interesting--hanging out with an animal, traveling, playing guitar or just appearing to be so awesome at what you’re doing, someone just had to snap a photo. And by the way, people get way more response out of pictures taken with a nice camera. Cell phone pics need not apply. Filter carefully through people who contact you. Don’t be discouraged by random creepers. Like dealing with any 34

potential dates, you have to approach every person you meet online as a stranger. Even though you’ve seen what you’re told is their face, you really have no way of knowing if they’re really who they represent themselves to be. Put in the time to get to know someone via messaging and phonecalls from a Google Voice number. Set up a Skype account just for online dating and video chat with “dates” you’re really serious about. This will let you see them in motion and talk without the danger of face-toface meetups. So what are people likely to lie about? OKCupid says that most people lie about a few points. They report that most people are about 2 inches shorter than they claim, make 20% less than they claim, that more attractive pictures tend to be more out of date and that about 80% of self-identified bisexuals on their site are only interested in one gender. It can be assumed that people often fudge the details on weight and some life goals, as well. So why lie? Often, people try to paint themselves in the most positive light possible. With truth-bendings like these, you should assume that the intent is NOT malicious-everyone wants to make the most connections possible. So when does it get malicious? Be on the lookout for scams. If communication is vague, difficult to understand or repetitive with a sob story that only YOU can help, you’re probably on the hook for a scam. If you’re ever asked for money, bank account information or to cash a check, it’s definitely a scam. Look for someone who is willing to share some personal details. If they’re pressing you for details but refuse to share any, search elsewhere. Also watch out for inconsistencies in their stories or anything that just FEELS fishy. If it seems weird, it is. If it seems too good to be true, it is. So how do you go about meeting in person? Group dates are an excellent way to ensure that you’re never alone with this new stranger. Go with friends for bowling or out to a restaurant together. Meet in public in a crowded area and agree with your friends that you aren’t to be left alone with this person, even if it feels “right”. Do, however, ensure that you can get some quality conversation in with your date. If you decide to meet up with your date one-on-one in the future, be sure to tell a friend where you’re going and to call and check up on your randomly. When it’s all said and done, you can meet some interesting people through online dating. While not every meetup will be a love connection, you can still have fun dating people in the area without hanging around bars awkwardly to try to meet people. Article by Amanda Harper

Out of the Box Dating Outside of the Movies
For most people, “date” implies a pretty specific set of events. One person goes to pick up the other or they meet at a restaurant, then catch a movie, maybe head out to a bar. But how dull is that? Thinking outside of the box office will lead to more exciting and more successful dates. But what to do in Central Kentucky? - Go on a tour. Visit a horse farm, winery, brewery, museum or other area attraction. Not only will you learn some pretty nifty trivia, but you’ll get to share a great learning experience with your date.
Date Scene
- Meet for a weekday lunch. Business lunches are rarely fun. Break up your sweetheart’s work week by meeting up for a quick lunch. This lets you chat, gives your date a very specific timeline and lets you keep things quick and casual. This can be a great way to have your first meeting with a blind date or internet meetup. - Surprise coffee. Just pick up your phone and ask your date their coffee order and where you can meet. Everyone appreciates a quick pick-me-up. Take a quick stroll around the block together.
- Make something. Try doing an activity together that produces something good. Whether its painting, sculpting, building, cooking or making sidewalk chalk art, you’ll both enjoy sharing the joy of creating something cool. As a bonus, you’ll have a nice memento of your date together. - Seriously, cook. Cooking together is one of the most intimate and fun ways to bond. You’re together in a small cooking space, you’re both sampling the things you make and you’re likely sharing some wine. If you’re not a good cook, try a cooking class. - Get active together. Roller skating, bowling, biking, hiking, kick boxing, swimming, walking, racing or rowing a boat on the lake. These are all great ways to get in a workout while getting to know your date a little better. This can be as silly as playing a few rounds of skiball, laser tag or air hockey. You can even become workout buddies, meeting up in the mornings for your jog or yoga class. 38
www.LexScene.com
- Be big nerds. If you both share geeky interests, dive right into them. Maybe you both like video games or comics. Maybe you’re really into astronomy or geology. Whatever it is that you’re both into, find ways to enjoy it together. Maybe you can visit a planetarium or listen to a biology lecture. Maybe you can meet up at a comic book shop when your favorite artist is signing autographs or head to the arcade for epic win. Whatever your nerdy interest is, share it together! - Try something you thought you hated. Maybe your date is really into some whiny music that you think is garbage. Maybe your date loves Indian food and you hate spices or enjoys roller blading and you have really bad balance. Whatever it is, give it a try. As long as you keep a great attitude about it and be honest about how you feel about it when it’s all through, your date will appreciate you trying for their sake. Who knows, maybe you’ll change your mind! - Try something you used to love as a kid. Blow bubbles, play hopscotch, visit the candy store, play Candyland, eat PB&J while sitting on your roof, play in the pile of leaves you raked up. - Don’t just bring flowers. Pick them together, visit a flower shop and buy them together or visit a garden center to smell them all. But on your next date, do just bring flowers. :) - Try a dish. Whether its a Kentucky classic or something you heard a local eatery serves that’s just amazing, try it together. - Double, triple, quadruple. Never underestimate going out with friends. Make it a double date or go out with many different couples. - Party down. Double dates not quite enough socializing? Host a house party! - So you think you CAN’T dance. Skip the club and try dance classes together. - Be super sweet. Forget dinner--head right on for dessert, frozen yogurt, candy or other sweet fun. Article by Amanda Harper

Mims worked directly under Bowen, receiving certification in December 2010. Bowen’s method offers an intense workout while stressing the importance of listening to one’s body and adjusting training accordingly. Bowen has extensive training at the root of her industry, making her one of the foremost experts in the field. The BarreAmped method fuses techniques from modern dance, Pilates, yoga and deep stretching to created isolated muscle movements. The challenging positions and unique, rhythmic motions make BarreAmped a fun way to work out for its students.
Business Scene
Mims calls herself something of a go-getter. She says her parents sometimes had trouble wrangling in her enthusiasm. “They tried to teach me patience, but that didn’t work,” she said. “When I decide to do something, it’s done.” Of course, in the business world, that passion and intensity is something of an asset. Through her determination, Mims is now the only person in Lexington who is certified to teach BarreAmped.

She knew that she wanted to make it her life’s work. She began to research training and certification options. She came across Suzanne Bowen and her method, known as BarreAmped, and Mims knew it was the right fit for her. 56

Mims says that her most embarassing moments happen in classes. She says it takes a lot to get used to a room full of people watching her “seat” (for those not in the know, that’s her posterior region) for an hour. “‘See my seat shake? Make it shake!’ Yikes... hope it looks good from back there,” Mims laughed. Mims loves to cook as she finds it very relaxing. Something no one knows about Mims? She hates wearing shoes--so her job is perfect because it allows her to workout barefoot.
While Mims doesn’t yet have a family of her own, she says that when that day comes, she’ll still be rockin’ it out on the barre. “I’ve already covered that topic with Suzanne,” she said. Working out is a lifestyle for Mims and she says she has no intention of ever retiring, a dedication that comes out in her
As a preacher’s kid, David Daugherty says that he never really had an official hometown. No doubt his travels inspired his love of great home interior goods and spaces. Daugherty bought Frames by James, a custom framing operation, just two years out of college. Since then, his business reach has expanded to Evantti, a store that specializes in unique home goods and decor. He owns the store with his wife, Tonya.
Daugherty credits some early business decisions with his success. The decision to import clay pottery from Mexico as a way to set his business apart. He also says that embracing computer numerical control (CNC) technology offered his businesses an opportunity to be more creative and special in the marketplace. CNC technology involves a coded computer program that instructs manufacturing machines how to operate. The complex series of steps that the machinery performs produces goods that are very close in size and design while maintaining the utmost quality.
Business Scene
Evantti and Frames by James are both located in the growing Brannon Crossing shopping center. Their great location and unique business offerings makes these stores a special treat. While there is only one Evantti location at the present time, Daugherty is always looking to the future. After 19 years in the business, he knows that any company evolves over time.
David & Tonya Daugherty of Evantti & Frames by James 859-296-4800 | evantti.com
When he’s not busy with his work for Evantti and Frames by James, Daugherty loves spending time with his family. He has “three wonderful children”, as he puts it. While he loves involving his kids in his business in some aspects, there are still some secrets he’s not quite ready to divulge. When asked about one of his most embarassing memories of getting started, he replied, “Don’t really care to share that--my kids are still too young to know about it!” Maybe he’s just joking.
Then again, when asked what people might not know about him or his business, he said, “My secret political ambitions.” Daugherty is certainly a man of mystery! What’s not a secret is his love of his work. He says he never plans to retire, instead hoping to continue to work and be involved in his businesses. Daugherty hopes that the future will bring growth to his stores and lots of enjoyment being a part of the home decor industry.

Sonya Melville and her mother have always had a dream of opening their own business. While they’re both professionals in other fields, they’re also both artistic. They wanted a way to tap into their creative sides. Painting with a Twist was founded by two women in Southern Louisiana. There are a lot of franchises in Melville’s hometown of Shreveport, LA. A friend and fellow LSU football fan had recently become a franchisee. Her excitement made it clear that Painting with a Twist was just the sort of business venture that Melville and her mother had been seeking. “We are a ‘painting for entertainment’ business. We are a laid back, fun, relaxing, entertaining alternative for a night out,” Melville said. “We are the opposite of rigid painting classes. We allow you to be creative and find your inner artist while listening to music and cutting up with your friends.” Guests attend a class and everyone paints together. Every guest will complete a painting that day and will be able to take home their one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Talented instructors work with everyone step-by-step to ensure that everyone, regardless of skill level, creates something fabulous. Melville, a board-certified Emergency Medicine Physician at UK
Hospital, says that one of her most successful business moves has been choosing a central location with good visibility. She loves that the location is in a busy, but safe center. Of course, she hopes that many more great business decisions are in the near future for she and her mother. Since Painting with a Twist has only been in business just over 5 months, Melville says that one of her greatest challenges is gaining name recognition. “A lot of people have never heard of Painting with a Twist at all,” Melville explains. “Painting with a Twist is a franchise with over 55 national locations, but we are the only one in Kentucky!” When she’s not at work at either of her jobs, Melville says that her true joy comes from spending time with her ever-growing family. She and her husband have been married 10 years and met at her first day of medical school at LSU. They have three children with one on the way. Together, her family loves to travel and enjoy fun outdoors. Melville loves being in a business that she feels is a great concept and brings joy to the owners and customers alike. She loves helping people find their inner Monet. Melville is excited to see more people in Lexington discover the fun of painting. www.LexScene.com

Sleeper Agent: Singer: Alex Kandel Singer/Guitarist/Lyricist: Tony Smith Bassist: Lee Williams Guitarist: Josh Martin Keyboardist: Scott Gardener Drummer: Justin Wilson Band’s Hometown: Bowling Green, KY
Where’d the name come from?: It’s a Battlestar Galactica reference, provided by sci-fi geek Gardener. Personal Advice: Live faster--don’t die. Dreams and Aspirations: To never work at Taco Bell or Walgreen’s again. Band’s favorite hang-out: Wherever good company and drinks are. (They’re fans of IPAs and bourbon.) Something Sleeper Agent wants people to know about local bands: They don’t want to be called “local bands”. [Editor’s note: Dude, our bad.] The Sound: Think garage band meets poppy fun. A rock foundation keeps everything head-bobbingly good, but the Photos by Beth Pope
Lee Williams
inherent joy of the group makes each song danceable, relatable and slightly cheeky. There’s a certain stamp of Kentucky in their tunes, with a little rowdiness and friendship woven through everything the band does. The lyrics focus on relationships, from familial to romantic. Smith often writes from what he imagines Kandel’s perspective is like, creating a unique tug of war between male and female vocals and thoughts. Smith also cites “boredom, love and mistakes” as inspirations for songs. How’d the band get together?: First formed in 2008 with drums and guitar featuring Wilson and Smith and dueling vocals, something that helped the band stand out from the area’s single-singer acts. Lee was a fan of the duo, joining up and bringing friend Gardener along for the ride. Kandel, meanwhile, had opened for Sleeper Agent with another band she’d formed with a friend. Only 16 at the time, she was crooning Adele tunes but really wanted to belt music more in line with Nirvana. Sleeper Agent had started looking for another member, but decided that she was too young. She was persistent, messaging Tony continually on Facebook to remind him that he needed to make her famous. He finally relented, giving the band its female vocal foil.

So how’d they get so famous?: Sleeper Agent created an 8-song demo together. Matt & Brad Shultz of Cage the Elephant took notice, inviting the band out on tour. They hooked Sleeper Agent up with their producer, Jay Joyce, who would go on to produce Sleeper Agent in July 2010 in his Nashville Studio. This connection led to the group landing a deal with Mom + Pop Records. From demo to deal, Sleeper Agent accomplished it all in just nine months. Since then, they’ve been opening for Cage the Elephant across America. They’ve played at SXSW and been featured on Spin.com as a Breaking Out act. More recently, they were featured on RollingStone. com. They’ve been featured as the iTunes single of the week, as well. The video for “Get It Daddy” is out, complete with piñata smashing fun. Not shabby for a group that got its start as a way to earn bar money in Bowling Green! What’s coming up for Sleeper Agent?: Their album, Celabrasion, hits stores on September 27. They’ll be at DeLuna Fest in Pesacola, FL with Weezer and Manchester Orchestra October 14th. Their tour with Circa Survive starts October 16th in Louisville. In January, the group will be playing on the Weezer Cruise from Miami to Cozumel. www.LexScene.com

Patti Starr and The ScareFest
Patti Starr greets you at her shop in Porter Place , she welcomes you with a smile that lights up her whole face. She radiates warmth and joy, full of energy and mirth. Her eyes legitimately twinkle. She’s the sort of person you’d expect to sit down with for a cup of tea and lose an entire afternoon to laughter and conversation. What she doesn’t seem like is a ghost hunter. But that’s exactly what Patti Starr does. She runs the Ghost Hunter Shop, leads the Bardstown Ghost Trek and is a key orchestrator of The ScareFest, Lexington’s annual horror and paranomal convention. Starr owns the Ghost Chasers International organization, which was founded in 1996 right here in Lexington, Kentucky.
Fall Scene
Starr has 30 years of experience in paranormal research and ghost investigations. She is a worldrenowned paranormal investigator with work documented in numerous magazines and newspapers. She is a frequent guest on television and radio programs. From 20062011, Starr was voted as one of the Top Ten Ghost Hunter Paranomal Investigators in America. Starr also teaches ghost hunting courses at her Ghost Hunter Shop.
So how does one decide that ghost hunting is the life for them? For Starr, the paranormal has always been a part of her life. She says that, as a child, she would often hear strange noises and whispers in the air around her. Sometimes, she would even feel what felt like a hand on her shoulder. She would ask aloud “Is there anyone here?” Everyone around her brushed her experiences off, but Starr knew what she’d heard and felt. As she got older, she learned about ways to document paranormal activity using technology. Starting with film cameras and tape recorders, Starr started to discover unusual shapes, glows and figures in her pictures, or could hear whispers in tapes. As Starr’s research continued, she discovered new technologies for documenting paranormal sightings, including EMF (electromagnetic field) meters and infrared tools. Starr had always been interested in having some sort of paranormal convention in Lexington. Horror fan Jeff Waldridge approached her regarding an idea for a horror convention. They decided that a combination of the two ideas would make the Lexington convention quite unique. Waldridge came up with 64
www.LexScene.com
a list of problems he’d seen in other conventions, and together, he, Starr and her husband devised ways to make their horror and paranormal convention one of the best in North America. Among their ideas was widening the rows, having volunteers run items to stars/vendors at the convention, offering extensive entertainment for the whole weekend and ensuring everyone has the best time possible. The ScareFest will be held in 2011 on September 23-25. The paranormal guests will include Zak Bagans of Ghost Adventures, Ben Hansen of Fact or Faked, Patti Starr, Chip Coffey of Psychic Kids and guests from Ghost Hunters, Britt Griffith, KJ McCormick and Amy Bruni. The horror guests will include Elvira, Lance Henriksen (Aliens, Pumpkinhead), Zach Galligan (Gremlins), Ernie Hudson (Ghost Busters) and Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th). The entertainment includes a number of acts, including escape artist Aron Houdini, the World’s Only Living Houdini. The stars sign autographs or take photos with guests for a fee. The event includes a number of special goings-on, as well. A VIP party for guests who hold “golden” tickets will include a mix and mingle with the stars. There will be a costume ball as well as a Mistress of Midnight female impersonator show for Elvira look-alikes. The annual undead wedding will feature a couple actually being married at The ScareFest by ZROCK’s Twitch. (This event is quite a treat. Last year’s couple had gotten engaged at The ScareFest the year prior. The groom had gotten Kane Hodder to write the proposal out on the bride’s autograph photo, then elected to be married at The ScareFest!) Films, featured speakers and other fun awaits at The ScareFest. The organizers have also worked with The Kentucky Theatre to screen horror films at midnight, which will be followed with a ghost hunt with Serena Gordon, psychic medium. Plus, countless vendors offer horror, paranormal and tattoo goods. Starr takes great pride in The ScareFest and really loves working with the group of volunteers that comes out and consistently goes above and beyond year after year. The small crew size always shocks attendees, who assume that they have a team of 200+. In reality, The ScareFest is pulled off by a core group of about 30 volunteers. In spite of their small size, they are consistently praised as highly-organized, guest AND vendor friendly and generally one of the best horror/paranormal conventions in the United States.

Heading out while the morning is still cool, then soaking up the midday sunshine before ending the day at your favorite restaurant. It’s a key part of the experience to dress up in your Sunday’s best, meet up with basically everyone you know and hit the social scene in full force for the whole month.
Fall Scene

All of the local college students flock to the races to mix, mingle. A college scholarship is given away after each race, meaning that Keeneland will be hoppin’ from open to close. This is always a huge day for Keeneland tailgating, as well.
October 15th is Post Time With the Pops, featuring the Boston Pops, with Keith Lockhart joined by the University of Kentucky Symphony Orchestra at 8PM at Rupp Arena.

Depending on the weather, this can often be one of the best days to head to Keeneland to enjoy the grounds and all that Keeneland has to offer. What’s the best way to enjoy Keeneland in October? There are a number of different ways to enjoy Keeneland, from walking the grounds with general admission to enjoying special reserved seating and accomodations. Try everything! What to Do When You’re Tailgating
Most tailgate traditions are tried and true. Like all things steeped in tradition, they’re the activities we learned from tailgaters who have gone before us... and you’re probably “over” more than one of those famous traditions! Let’s face it--tailgating can be kind of repetitive by midway into football season. So how do you mix it up while still enjoying the full tailgate experience? We have some ideas on what to do when you’re tailgating. Show Your Grill
Fall Scene
Sure, this may be a given. But it’s an experience that a lot of people skip for one reason or another. Portable use-and-toss grills stomp all over every excuse. If you have a friend with a pickup or a flat, safe surface you can set your teeny grill on, give it a go. Whether you just do ‘dogs or go full out with grilled corn and steak, you’ll be glad you got such a hearty meal. Plan a potluck with your friends--someone should bring chips and dip, someone can be in charge of the meat, someone should pack dessert while someone else is head of the drinks committee. Toss, Flip and Chuck
Cornhole is like wearing blue on gameday--if you don’t do it, you might as well just go home. However, it’s not everybody’s favorite game. The ring toss, the weird thing with the ladder, bowling and “catch” are all some great ways to pass the time between getting to the parking lot and kickoff. Any self-respecting sporting good/fan apparel store will have dozens of fun tailgating games. It’s vitally important that you keep your tailgate location and space in mind with games, however. If you’re posing a danger to your friends, those around you or vehicles, just don’t do it. Tailgate Somewhere Else Most people head to the stadium to get their ‘gate on. But why? Sure you’re bound to see basically everyone you know, but once in a while, it’s fun to mix it up. Host the preparty in a friend’s front lawn (with their permission, natch) or make it a classy affair at Keeneland. Choose a grassy knoll versus pavement or just pick a spot that you’ve never tried before. Just be sure you’re allowed to tailgate where you park! Tailgate. Like, For Real. Never tailgated out of the back of a pickup truck? Do it! Sitting in the bed of a truck gives you an awesome view of the festivities and for some reason just attracts everyone’s attention directly to you. Just be sure to share your hotdogs, alright? 76
www.LexScene.com
Be a Tourist There are plenty of vendors and groups that set up huge tents and invite passers-by to come in and enjoy the fun. It’s like a mini festival. If you’ve never tapped into the goldmine of amusement that is the big tent or vendor party bus, you’re missing out. You can score awesome loot and delicious grub. Spot these crowd-friendly groups by the lines at the door or people crowding around, milling in and out of the tent. Not sure if you’re welcome to crash a party? Ask. At worst, the people who set up the tent will think you’re a weirdo. At best? You’ll make some new friends and get a bottle coozie. TweetUp Social networking is a big part of everyone’s lives. Tailgating is a huge social event. Why not get to know some of your online acquaintances a little better and meet new people from the area? Tweet your tailgating location and let people know they’re invited to drop by--BYOB style. While you should bear in mind Stranger Danger, you’re almost certainly going to meet some fun-loving people who just enjoy tailgating. If you’re a real social butterfly, engineer a bigger get together. Start sending out tweets and Facebook notices a week or two in advance with the proposed tailgate location, the available grub, what games you’ll have available for people to enjoy and any other details that are important to your tailgating shindig. Make use of hashtags and trends to get the word out. But be aware--these things can get HUGE! Build yourself an “out”, like insisting on BYOB/BYOFood. Preparty, Afterparty, Post Game Wrapup... Tailgating isn’t THE party. Get together with friends before you go to tailgate or meet up in the lot after the game for more tailgating fun. If you’re a night owl, take the party to a restaurant, bar or house. To make a real day of it, start with a football themed brunch with your besties and work together to prepare your tailgate meal until you head off to the stadium. After the game, head to your backyard for drinks, dessert and more fun. Make a Spectacle Try making a scene! Whether it’s “classy tailgate” (think dressing up, sipping wine and having a plated dinner on impromptu tables) or going full-on day glo sparkle magic dance party, try doing something totally outlandish. People will appreciate your festive spirit and you’ll most likely end up all over Facebook in the morning. Just be sure you’re not encroaching on the good time of others and everyone will applaud your bravado!
