For our Men’s Issue, we wanted to feature some fellas who did the BBN proud. Naturally, our first pick was this guy. Fresh off the historic Citrus Bowl win, Coach Mark Stoops is looking ahead at what all that hard work will mean in the 2019/2020 season... and beyond. On a rainy day, we sat down with Stoops between a live taping of Kentucky Sports Radio on site at the Joe Craft Football Training Facility to get his perspective on his team, his pasttimes and what great recruitment looks like to him.

Who’s Who TOPS: What is your favorite thing about Lexington?
determination. It’s hard to measure a player’s heart.
Coach Stoops: The people. We love living here. The people make this place. They made us feel like we were at home from day one.
What’s the hardest part about playing in the SEC?
If you weren’t the coach, where would you watch the games? The Woodford Reserve Club. We have meetings there from time to time. Just looking around that room, it’s so beautiful. You can go out on that deck and overlook the field. There are great seats. You also get to hear the game and the crowd well. What’s your favorite part about coaching at UK? Working with the players and getting everybody to pull the rope in the same direction. It is a tall task to get everyone in the organization on the same page. When it all comes together, there is no greater feeling. The work that goes into it, the preparation and the respect for the game and players is most important to me. The outcome is what it is. But the building of the team is the real challenge. Tell us about the emotion of the winning the Citrus Bowl. It was definitely a great feeling and a culmination of a lot of hard work over a lot of years. The feeling and joy that you have for those players, in particular those 16 seniors who have been through the highs and lows, that’s what it’s all about. There is no value or dollar amount you can put on that. There is nothing that can compare to the gratification you have for the players and their families. How has that success changed the mindset within the program? As soon as the game was over, your mind immediately goes to what’s next. And that is obviously recruiting. But it’s also getting our arms around these players and this team. I think I was pleasantly surprised and encouraged by the players returning because they saw the blue print. They saw the sacrifice. That doesn’t mean we know how to follow it day to day right now. But they have a clear vision of what it takes to be successful based on what they saw from the leadership of the team this year. How have players like Josh Allen and Benny Snell impacted recruiting? It definitely has a positive impact. They see the players and the development. I really appreciate all the coaches, strength and conditioning, nutritionalists and all the people who help develop these young men. A great example of that is this year’s draft. We had 8 players at the NFL combine. And 7 of those players are 3 stars or 2 stars. So that means there is something good going on in the walls of this building. We are very intentional in developing them in all areas of their lives. And I appreciate all the hard work that goes into that. What traits did you see in Benny and Josh during their recruiting phase that made them stand out to you? We’ve had a lot of players that have produced beyond the expectation coming out of high school. I think we go much deeper than the talent threshold. We have to have talent to compete in the SEC and to win games. But we look for other characteristics and look at their demeanor. We trust our evaluation. Our coaches do a good job evaluating on film, and then we get to know them. One thing those two had in common is they had big hearts and
COMMUNITY
It is brutally competitive. It is by far the best league in college football. There are exceptional coaches but it’s the talent of the players. There is a lot of talent in the south and there are not many teams in the SEC willing to lose those players without a fight in the recruiting. Positive development on the defensive line seems to have a direct correlation with success in the SEC. Talk about how you’ve achieved that at UK in the past couple years. It goes back to the root of the things I care most about, and that is recruiting and development. We recruit good players and we develop them. What has helped us is that we played a lot of guys in those positions, both on the offensive line and the defensive line. We’ve had a lot of rotation, which helps with development. It keeps guys engaged and it helps get some plays under their belt and helps them build for the future. What do you expect from Terry Wilson next season? We expect growth. He is coming back as a junior with a full year under his belt. There is no replacing that experience. He is a hard worker. He is physically getting better, getting stronger, working hard in the weight room, becoming a more vocal leader. We expect big things from him. Talk about how the leadership of Mitch Barnhart has affected the success of the football team and the rest of the athletic programs at UK. He has a great deal to do with the success of our football program and success across the campus. You look around at this campus, the programs we have and the coaches we have. It is elite company. It definitely humbles me to be a part of it that. I greatly appreciate Mitch’s support. He has been rock solid since I’ve been here. He is heavily invested in all of our players, coaches and athletes. He works extremely hard. He knows everyone on campus, knows everyone’s name. It is a relationship business. He has been an unbelievable support of our student athletes. How does the support of UK fans impact the program? The support of the Big Blue Nation is going to take us to a new level. I greatly appreciate the support. It’s not easy going to a football game. It’s expensive. You have to deal with the crowds. It’s an all-day affair with the tailgate and the long games. So I have always appreciated the support. And we need that. When I say we are all in this together, it’s not a cliché. It’s true. When we walk into a stadium that is rocking, and it’s at capacity, that makes a difference. It affects our team and the way we play and the excitement we have. It also affects recruitment. So the support of Big Blue Nation is extremely important and we need it. We work hard for the fans. We want to represent this state with pride. What would surprise people to know about you? People think I am boring. My mother would tell you I am the fun one of the family. I love taking my boys fishing, doing a bit of golfing. I keep it boring in interviews.

“SKY” Walker KENNY
SEC Player of the Year in 1985 and 1986. #2 on Kentucky’s alltime career scoring list. Played 7 seasons in the NBA. 1989 NBA Slam Dunk Champion. This living legend now resides in Lexington and lends his voice for sports commentary as a cohost on WVLK.
TOPS: What brought you back to Lexington after living all over the world? Kenny Walker: I love the UK fans. I love the city of Lexington. I love the state of Kentucky. This is all from a guy that grew up in Georgia. I fell in love with basketball. And Kentucky is the king of basketball. The guys who play here have the greatest respect for the program. Even though I can’t put on that blue and white anymore, I can be the greatest ambassador for the university. When you go out, do people instantly recognize you? Well, not to brag, but because I am so tall, people always think “that guy must play basketball”. To my surprise, a lot of people still know who I am, which is amazing because I graduated over 30 years ago. What made that era so unique is that you’ve got a lot of people who played and stayed at the school for 3 and 4 years. People got to know us and our families. We actually had a senior night. Now it’s different. It’s still exciting but the fans don’t have enough time to get to

know the players like they did with me, Jack Givens, Tony Delk, Sam Bowie and Kyle Macy. Favorite memory of playing at UK? The one that stands out for me personally is senior night because my mom and dad were out on the court with me for my final regular season game at Rupp Arena. That was a very emotional experience to see tears in their eyes, and the pride that they had in me for my basketball career and getting my degree. That was a great moment to be able to share with my parents. What was the highlight of your career? I am known for winning the 1988 NBA Slam Dunk Contest. What made that bittersweet for me was, unfortunately I lost my father 2 days before the dunk contest. I wasn’t sure if I was going to compete, but my mother encouraged me. To win the dunk contest under such tough circumstances, I proved to a lot of people that you can overcome any obstacle in life. Who do you think dunks the best right now in college basketball? I would love to say a Kentucky guy. We have Herro and Keldon Johnson. But I have to answer the question honestly. When I look at a guy like Zion Williamson from Duke, he is doing some things on the college level that we haven’t even seen LeBron James and Michael Jordan do on a pro level. I just wish he was wearing Kentucky blue instead of Duke blue. Who is your favorite player on today’s team? I’ve loved Keldon Johnson from day one. I love the energy and the emotion he plays with. I think that is what it takes to be a great player. That’s just something you can’t teach. I also like Ashton Hagens. Since he has had the opportunity to be the full time point guard, I think he plays more comfortably on the court knowing that he is going to get the minutes. I like watching those guys, but the key to this Kentucky team is PJ Washington. He is the best pro prospect. How do we look heading into the tournament? After getting onto a rocky start against Duke, Coach Cal didn’t lose faith in his team. He continued to work with them. They always get better around Christmastime. That is the sign of a good coach: knowing how to develop a team. I like where we are now. We are more confident. We are playing better. Any advice for the team heading into the tournament? Stay humble. When you are winning and everyone is patting you on the back, it’s great that the fans are happy, but you can’t get complacent. Coach Cal has been through this so many times. He will have to find different ways to keep the team hungry and humble. The minute you think you are better than you are, that’s when complacency sets in. You can’t forget what has made you successful as a team. Once you start thinking about individual goals, that’s when you divide the team. You won SEC Player of the Year twice. Who do you predict will win this year? We have several candidates with Keldon Johnson and Ashton Hagans, but I am going to go with PJ Washington. He does so many things well. How does Coach Cal compare to Eddie Sutton or Joe B. Hall? All of the coaches have different personalities. Calipari is more charismatic and exciting and I would have loved to play for him. He is more of a player’s coach. He has an open style that allows the players to use their creativity. Coach Sutton was more of a stern disciplinarian. archive photos courtesy of Universtiy of Kentucky Athletics Department March 2019 | TOPSinLex.com

MATT Jones If you’re a die-hard Kentucky fan, you know Matt Jones. Kentucky Sports Radio has become an essential news source for the BBN. The team launched KSBar & Grille in August and he’s on Hey Kentucky! weeknights on LEX18. TOPS: What is a day in the life of Matt Jones like? Matt Jones: I get up and go to either Lexington or Lousiville, and do the radio from ten to noon. Handle a lot of business stuff for the website and bar in the afternoon. We tape our TV show at 4:30. If there are games at night, I do the games. Occasionally I get to do nothing. At this time of year, that is rare. It’s a lot but I enjoy it. It’s very busy during the season. What is your favorite part of your work on KSR? Two things. One is interacting with fans. Its been great to be an uplifting thing for fans and to see the impact the show has for people. The second is being able to help people follow their passion. We have been able employ a lot of people in the dream of covering sports. We have 6 full time employees on the website. We have 4 on the radio, 6 on the TV show.

KSR has a huge following. What do you attribute that to?
What’s next for you?
We stay connected to the fans. Journalists in sports for a long time didn’t think about their audience. I don’t think they thought about who we are marketing to and what they want to see. And because we are fans, people could connect more. We are fans, not journalists. Most all of us are from Kentucky. We just caught an opening and hit it and it’s been really successful.
I have been doing some national stuff for ESPN and I will continue doing that. I am contemplating running for Senate. I am going to decide that this summer. But whatever I do, it will be where I can make the biggest impact and be happy. I put a big price tag on happiness. I have sacrificed career opportunities because I have a desire to be happy. And that is another big part of my success. I enjoy what I do.
Why is KSBar the best place to watch the game? We designed it with the idea of giving UK fans exactly what they want. We wanted to get away from a corporate feel. The food is really good. I wanted it to be good, but I am not a cook. I think the food is far superior to other sports bars. What was the most exciting moment of the football season for you?
What do you do in your spare time? I read a lot. I enjoy spending time with my small group of people I am close to. I like to get away. Kentucky is awesome but it can be overwhelming sometimes, so I love going to places where nobody knows me.
For me it was beating Florida because it had been 31 years. It was the symbol that Kentucky was back and ready to make a move.
Basketball or football?
Any advice for Stoops for next season?
TV or radio?
Ha! No advice! He has really hit his groove here. He has given Kentucky fans what they have always wanted. They have always wanted a program that they can be proud of, and that is competitive. If you are a Kentucky football fan, I don’t know how you couldn’t be happy right now.
Radio. It is more intimate. It’s a better way to showcase your real personality. I think you are 100% yourself on radio in a way you aren’t anywhere else.
Any predictions for the NCAA basketball tournament? I think Kentucky is going to be really good. I think they have a chance to win it all. They have the talent. They always play better at the end of the year. They have a chance to win the whole thing.
Basketball.
Pizza or wings? Wings. I wouldn’t have always said that, but we make really great wings at KSBar and I’ve grown to like them. Beer or bourbon? Bourbon, for sure. •

THE CALIPARI FOUNDATION When John Calipari accepted the head coaching role with the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team, he not only forever changed the game, but he changed – and continues to change – the community around him for the better. story by Lauren Henry Rogers | photos courtesy of UK Athletics and Dr. Michael Huang
In his own words from 2014, Coach profoundly recognizes the privilege and adamantly acts on the responsibility of the position he is in saying he strives “to bring light to the great things that need support from others in our university, others in our state and our city.” With this in mind, each individual involved with his incredible nonprofit organization, The Calipari Foundation, is not only giving to others in substantive and quantifiable ways, but they are giving a new perspective on life to those who receive from and participate in their efforts.
50
Founded in 2012 by John and Ellen Calipari, The Calipari Foundation has facilitated the involvement in charitable causes throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky and beyond by investing in communities. These communities can be, and are in fact, more than purely geographically based; they are educational, social and spiritual in nature. To date, TCF has awarded more than $2.5 million dollars in grants to over 50 nonprofit organizations though on top of this. Just recently during the government shutdowns which began on
TOPS in Lexington | March 2019
Non-Profit Spotlight December 22 of 2018, John and Ellen have been very involved with providing financial assistance through The Calipari Foundation in partnership with REACH and Kroger to help support the federal employees and their families who have been furloughed in the Fayette County and Lexington area to the 400 federal employees in Lexington who are being furloughed. In an amazing testimony to the character and true servant heart of the Caliparis, they were hoping to stay anonymous in their heroic acts of charity. When the news leaked about their involvement, however, Coach simply expressed his empathy on his and his wife’s behalf and said they just had to do something. He explains, “Ellen and I sat there and watched and said, ‘What can we do, how can we be involved in this?’ Our initial thing was, nobody needs to know. We’re going through REACh, which is a nonprofit that we gave the money to and again, my friends at Kroger are helping, so whether it be gas, or the pharmacy, or food, or those items, they can get that. We’re going to try to touch all 400 of the people that are being hurt. They’re from Lexington. They’re our friends. They’re our neighbors. You just want them to know that you care or you understand or you feel.” There is only one thing that Calipari asks those that receive from the financial assistance: “to do what my mother always said and pay it forward.” He continues, “Once you’re made whole and back on good footing, take what we gave you and give it to somebody else.” In addition to raising funds to give to nonprofit organizations, TCF hopes to raise the public’s level of awareness regarding philanthropy and to encourage members of Kentucky communities to become involved in and support charitable activities, which they have undeniably accomplished through a number of
COMMUNITY
platforms. While past foundation events have included hosting a comedy show, auctioning autographed Calipari items from his own closet, raffling off Harley-Davidson motorcycles, the most successful TCF fundraising event has been the John Calipari Basketball Fantasy Experience held annual which features an alumni game with former UK men’s basketball players, and let’s be real for a moment, what Kentucky fan wouldn’t want to be involved with that? Ever in the charitable mindset, Coach has worked to ensure that the camp is as much about fundraising as it is about fun. Proceeds generated from the fantasy camp go to The Calipari Foundation and then back into the community in the form of grants for both local and national nonprofit groups. Participants of the John Calipari Basketball Fantasy Experience can expect to fulfill their dreams as a Kentucky Wildcat in the exciting, intensive, three-day event that takes place on the University of Kentucky’s campus. Over the course of the experience, campers will be outfitted in official UK gear, they will be trained by current and former college coaches, practice in UK’s elusive and pristine practice facilities and close out their tenure with a championship tournament at Rupp Arena. Most importantly to Coach, is that participants will experience physical and leadership development that they can carry over into their day-to-day lives, one of the The Calipari Foundation’s most esteemed missions. As Coach Calipari says, “It’s not just about working hard, it’s about working together. You have to care more about the team than you do about yourself.” Let’s rally to help The Calipari Foundation continue making a positive impact in our community. Fighter Pilot Lexington native Colonel Michael Trey Rawls entered the Air Force in 1992 as a distinguished graduate from the University of Kentucky. Today, he is the Cammander, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing (EUCOM) and the 435th Air Expediationary Wing (AFRICOM) at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. Describe a day in the life of an US Air Force General. The good ones, at a philosophical level, lead, command and inspire their subordinates everyday to achieve their mission as set out by the President. At a practical level, they look after their subordinate commanders, provide direction and vision on how to execute specific missions and improve the quality of life for the airmen entrusted to their care. photos courtesy of Col. Michael Trey Rawls away from home. I have lived in 10 states and 4 countries and spent much of my adult life in some of the tough neighborhoods of the world. Kentucky is and always will be where my heart is and I miss it. When you get to come home to Kentucky, what are some of your favorite things to do? The perfect day for me, and the one I often think about is a perfect blue Saturday in the fall at Keeneland, followed by tailgating and a night football game. I also miss fishing on all my favorite lakes and streams around central Kentucky with my brothers and friends. •

Railbird Festival rides into Keeneland this August Is Lexington finally getting its signature, A-list music festival? August 10-11, Keeneland will be debuting the Railbird Festival. This two-day celebration of music, bourbon and thrilling experiences found uniquely in Lexington aims to make a big splash in our music culture. Nationally renowned festival producer AC Entertainment is introducing the festival. AC Entertainment has handled topbilled music festivals like Bonnaroo, Forecastle, High Water, Moon River and more. Music acts are to be announced in March but the festival planners have said that a mix of genres including folk, bluegrass and rock will be heard on The Grounds at Keeneland. AC Entertainment president Ashley Capps said, “With all of our festivals, we aspire to create an experience that stands apart from others – that is a true celebration of place, of the richness and uniqueness of a community. That, for us, is at the heart of any truly great festival experience. This iconic setting at Keeneland in a city like Lexington, Kentucky, and these visionary leaders who make it all work, from bourbon to horses to bluegrass and everything in between.”
As for the name, Railbird’s origins are tied to equine slang. A “railbird” in horse racing is the racetrack regular known for sticking close to the action and hanging on the rail along the track. Attendees from near and far are invited to “ride the rail” and get in the action in the same way for an unforgettable weekend of music, art and bourbon in a one-of-a-kind setting. Artisanal and local foods will be at the forefront, along with a number of craft beers. It wouldn’t be Kentucky without it, so bourbon also will play a spotlight role at Railbird. A number of bourbon distillers will be on-site with special, exclusive offerings, available only at Railbird. There will be multiple levels of admission including VIP and General Admission, involving different meals, activities and more. To learn more about Railbird Festival, visit RailbirdFest. com. Stay up-to-date with Railbird news and events by following the festival on Facebook and Instagram @RailbirdFestival and Twitter @RailbirdFest. You can sign also up for the Railbird newsletter to get updates about the festival, as well as pre-sale ticket prices as the music acts are announced at RailbirdFest.com.

New Make-a-Wish office opens in Lexington
Four Roses wins World’s Best Bourbon award
Make-a-Wish® Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana opened a new office in Lexington on February 28th, bringing together members of the community to learn more about their important mission.
The 2019 World Whiskey Awards have announced that Four Roses 130th Anniversary 2018 Limited Edition Small Batch Bourbon has been named the World’s Best Bourbon.
Make-A-Wish® creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. They are on a quest to bring every eligible child’s wish to life, because a wish is an integral part of a child’s treatment journey. Research shows children who have wishes granted can build the physical and emotional strength they need to fight a critical illness. “Every year, children battling critical illnesses in Kentucky are granted their heartfelt wish. But for every wish brought to life, there is another child waiting to experience the transformational power of a wish. Currently across Kentucky there are over 390 kids waiting for a wish. We need the community’s support to help us grant these wishes, which is why we are so proud to open the new office Lexington and give every child the opportunity to experience a life-changing wish,” said Faith Hacker, Make-a-Wish OKI’s Senior Development Officer. They announced a special fundraising initiative known as WISH 100 (Women Inspiring Strength & Hope) which consists of 100 women who aim to raise tens of thousands of dollars to grant local wishes in Central and Eastern Kentucky in May.
“The competition for the World Whiskies Awards is strong, so it’s a tremendous honor for our 130th Anniversary Limited Edition Small Batch to be recognized by the judging panel as the World’s Best Bourbon,” said Brent Elliott, Four Roses Master Distiller. “I wanted to create something special to celebrate 130 years of handcrafting premium Bourbon and I could not be happier with this bottling.” Elliot also described the process of producing such a bottle: “From the beginning of the process for this Limited Edition, I focused on building around the unique fruit flavors in our F and V yeast strains, and these flavors shine through in the finished product. As a contrast, I also included a spicy, older batch. By mingling these different flavor profiles, I think we achieved a wonderfully balanced, complex and unique Bourbon.” The honor was announced during the Whisky Magazine Awards New York program on January 30. The World Whiskey Awards judging panel includes leading international spirit journalists and industry experts. Four Roses 130th Anniversary 2018 Limited Edition Small Batch Bourbon was also named best Kentucky Bourbon (with scores topping bourbons made outside Kentucky as well) before going on to win the “World’s Best” title. Four Roses Single Barrel and Four Roses Small Batch also were recognized as part of the awards, both earning Gold honors from judges.

Art in the Bluegrass
Ralph Steadman: A RETROSPECTIVE story by Jen Roytz | photos courtesy of the Private collection of Ralph Steadman
A world-renowned artist whose works have graced the pages of Rolling Stone, The Observer and The New York Times, Ralph Steadman’s imaginative style of bold colors, bright ink spatters and poignant depictions of his subjects is instantly recognizable. Now through May 5th, the University of Kentucky Art Museum, part of the UK College of Fine Arts, is hosting “Ralph Steadman: A Retrospective,” which will include more than 100 of his original works. Steadman is most widely known for his works in collaboration with Louisville-born writer Hunter S. Thompson, whom he met at the 1970 Kentucky Derby for their first collaborative work, “The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved,” which appeared in Scanlon’s Monthly and received critical acclaim for both Hunter’s writing and Steadman’s artwork. Their working relationship evolved into a 35-year friendship and partnership, the
60
product of which were such famous pieces as Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, for which Steadman provided the nowfamous artwork, and numerous other pieces for Rolling Stone and other major outlets. It was these types of collaborations between Thompson and Steadman that became the catalyst for “gonzo journalism,” a term used to describe one not simply covering a story from a third-person perspective, but completely immersing one’s self and becoming part of the story in order to write as a first-person account. His catalog of work, however, goes much deeper. Included in his vast resume are cover artwork for albums by The Who, Frank Zappa and Ambrosia; illustrated editions of Alice in Wonderland, Treasure Island and Animal Farm; as well as satiric depictions of political leaders like Margaret Thatcher, Richard Nixon and Donald Trump.
TOPS in Lexington | March 2019
Now 82-years-old, Steadman has maintained his relevance by transcending generations and genres. His more recent work includes the label design for popular Flying Dog Beer and cover art for Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho, a 2017 collaborative album by popular hip-hop artists Travis Scott and Quavo. While Steadman’s work is well-known around the world, the artist has maintained possession of much of his original art, refusing to sell, but rather loaning portions of his archive for exhibits and showcases. The UK Art Museum was selected as one of the few American venues for this internationally-touring exhibition, which was named by USA Today as one of the best exhibits at US museums in Winter, 2019. The showcase was originally curated by Anita O’Brien at the Cartoon Museum in London. A full color catalog of the exhibit is available, as is an audio tour by Audible, which features commentary by Steadman, as well as actor Tim Robbins and curator Anita O’Brien. The exhibit can be viewed through May 5th: Tuesday-Thursday (10 am – 5 pm), Friday (10 am – 8 pm) and Saturday-Sunday (noon – 5 pm). LIFESTYLE Outfit of the Month 1.
2. by jesse brooks Even though spring is on the horizon, March in Kentucky is known to be rather chilly, and this outfit is guaranteed to keep you warm and cozy. Starting off with a staple piece every well dressed guy should have in his closet - the classic black coat. Thanks to its clean, fuss-free design, Joseph’s ‘London’ coat is one you’ll be wearing for seasons to come. It’s tailored from warm mid-weight, woolblend and fully lined so it will pull on easily over chunky knitwear. We continued our ensemble with more everyday, must have pieces that will never go out of style. These RtA jeans are cut from slightly stretchy denim and are heavily washed and distressed to give them a soft, worn-in feel. Keeping things warm and comfy is a cashmere sweater that you’ll never want to take off. If you live in sweatshirts, you owe yourself an upgrade to this Aspesi piece. It is spun from premium cotton, cashmere and wool-blend, but has the traditional looped backing, V stitch at the neck, and raglan sleeves of its more casual counterpart.
3.
When it comes to footwear, we figured if you’re going to spend a good amount on a pair of boots, they have to be versatile. M.Williams has been handcrafting footwear for over 80 years. These black leather ‘Chelsea’ boots uphold the label’s exacting standards, with a sleek and contemporary look to go from work to home with ease.
4.
We wrapped things up with a couple of handsome accessories. Made in Italy from wool, this Balenciaga fringed scarf features a tartan finish that will have you looking cool and staying warm. Lastly, no menswear look can be fully polished without a pair of shades. Tom Ford’s square frame sunglasses offer glossy black acetate and are detailed with the signature ‘T’ hinges at the sides. Whether you’re going to a UK game or simply heading to the office, in this look you will be one ‘Sharp Dressed Man’.

LIFESTYLE Nutrition News
by amanda harper
No matter how careful you are at counting macros, there are always important vitamins and minerals that are missing from what you eat. Vitamin pills, capsules and powders are designed to supplement shortcomings in your diet. But how do you know which ones to take? Without the help of a nutritionist, your doctor and a blood panel, it can be hard to know what holes exist in your diet. It gets even more complicated when you take into account that what your body needs changes with your age, lifestyle and basically every single meal you eat. Research shows that taking a single supplement alone is not always the most effective approach. Often, the absorption depends on a careful balance of other vitamins and minerals. That’s why a men’s multivitamin may be an excellent starting point, especially in combination with a balanced diet that includes lots of leafy greens and carefully chosen proteins. However, even multivitamins may have their pitfalls when it comes to your unique needs. Here are some supplements to consider and compare against your favorite multivitamin.
It’s a common misconception that only women who plan on becoming pregnant need to add folate to their vitamin regimen. In fact, it’s an important tool in everyone’s heart health arsenal. It helps prevent a build-up of homocysteine, a protein that can lead to heart and blood vessel disease if your body produces it in excess.
VITAMIN B-12 While you’re young, your body gets most of this vitamin from food. But as you age, absorption declines. B-12 supports the health of your blood cells and nerves. Deficiency can result in anemia, so make sure this is present in your vitamin regimine.
CREATINE Working out? Creatine helps increase muscle mass, strength and performance. But did you know that it has shown to protect against neurological disease? Research is showing it has promise in fighting Parkinson’s Disease and other conditions. It also may help improve brain function and fight fatigue in day-to-day life.
VITAMIN D
ASTAXANTHIN
If you’re not regularly outdoors with your skin exposed (without sunscreen), you probably aren’t getting enough Vitamin D from the sun. Many foods are fortified with Vitamin D, but it can be hard to know if you’re getting enough. Aside from helping your body process calcium, Vitamin D may help boost testosterone levels in men.
This powerful antioxidant has been has been linked to a number of health benefits. Research shows astaxanthin may help with male fertility, arthritis, heart health, athletic performance and much more. Eat a lot of Pacific salmon? Congratulations, you’re probably already enjoying the benefits of astaxanthin: it’s what gives the fish its pink color.
OMEGA-3 If you haven’t heard that Omega-3 is important, you’ve probably been living under a rock. Its anti-inflammatory properties benefit your cardiovascular health and joints. It boasts a long list of overall benefits, including supporting your vision, offering mental clarity, possibly fighting depression and more. Many multivitamins don’t include Omega-3.

TAKE FITNESS TO THE NEXT LEVEL WITH A PERSONAL TRAINER
YMCA OF CENTRAL KENTUCKY
What does it take to get yourself to the next level? A YMCA personal trainer can help you break through and achieve your goals. YMCA personal trainers develop individualized exercise programs based on your needs. For some that might be a one-on-one personal training session. For others, it might be a small group. Regardless, all of their sessions take place in a comfortable, safe and non-intimidating environment, regardless of age, gender or ability. The YMCA recommends starting with a free wellness appointment, which is included at no additional cost with a membership. This consultation will establish short- and long-term goals, and you and a wellness center staff member will walk through recommended equipment and classes based on your needs. If you feel you need more assistance and accountability throughout your workouts, they’ll find the right trainer for you.
“A YMCA personal trainer can have an immediate impact on a member by developing a personal program squarely focused on goal achievement,” said the YMCA of Central Kentucky’s Marcus McAlpin. “We have so many different options to choose from, ranging from strength and cardio to group exercise classes such as yoga or Pilates Reformer.” “A great plan and positive attitude can help a client quickly become healthy in every area of their life – mentally, physically and spiritually – whether they meet with a trainer once, or three times, a week,” McAlpin added. The YMCA offers sessions on various days and times across all Lexington and Frankfort locations. Member and non-member rates are available. LIFESTYLE WOW Wedding
story by lauren rogers
Jenna will forever remember locking eyes with her groom as she walked down the aisle on a picturesque, sun-filled April day. “Even with the large crowd, it was the most intimate moment of our lives,” she remembers with a smile. hough pursuing their careers took them across the country, a shared love of their home state brought them back to Kentucky where no other place was more fitting for Jenna and Jacob Cassady to begin their lives together as husband and wife. Jenna Rae McNeal grew up in Carrollton, Kentucky while Jacob Cassady is from Prospect, Kentucky, just a short forty-fiveminute drive away. In 2007, however, both Jenna and Jake moved to Lexington to attend undergraduate school though they would not meet for quite some time. Here, Jenna attended the University of Kentucky while Jake is a Transylvania alum. “A few years after graduating college, we met while attending law school at UK,” Jenna explains. Suffice it to say, a deep love bloomed, along with promising law careers out of state. When it came time to plan their wedding, both Jenna and Jake were living and working in Miami, Florida; she as a prosecutor of domestic violence crimes at the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office and he as a commercial real estate attorney specializing in some of the largest projects in Miami Dade County. It is without debate that this made planning their special day back in Kentucky particularly trying, but Jenna credits the amazing aunt and sister team at Design Link Interiors of Lexington for helping to ensure that her classically sophisticated wedding style would come to fruition. “I had two brilliant designers working on my behalf and consulting me from afar. They were the brains behind my wedding decor while I was living in Miami and I was so lucky to have them!” she exclaims.

WOW Wedding LIFESTYLE
One absolute throughout the wedding planning process was their venue: Richwood Plantation, now known as Richwood on the River, in Milton Kentucky. “The venue is right outside of my hometown and some of the most beautiful weddings I have ever seen were held there,” attests Jenna. Apart from its’ inherent, natural beauty, Jenna and Jake were drawn to Richwood because they desired a space to celebrate their wedding in an intimate, yet big way. The gorgeous estate and its’ grounds provided all of this and more for them. “Richwood was the perfect venue to display our love for the simple beauty of Kentucky, southern elegance and the quaint spirit of home,” describes Jenna. “We also reserved the venue for the entire weekend so that we had not just a wedding day, but a full wedding weekend!” On Friday afternoon, the bride and groom, along with 120 of their guests, began celebrating with the rehearsal dinner held in the attached carriage house. Embracing their families’ heritage, the couple incorporated ScotchIrish traditions from bagpipe playing to special toasts consisting of kissing the bottom of their scotch glasses, setting the mood for a truly unique wedding ahead. The next day, the groom’s aunts hosted a fabulous bridal brunch, complete with a mimosa bar, making for a relaxed, yet fun-filled morning. “My bridesmaids (all 9 and their dates!!) and I stayed in the main house and suites. My husband’s groomsmen along with their dates stayed in cabins that are just behind the main house. These locations were distanced enough to keep my husband and I from seeing each other on our wedding day but close enough so that everyone could easily congregate throughout the weekend,” Jenna illustrates. The wedding itself was held in the back area of the estate with the picturesque setting ideal for their outdoor ceremony and tented reception. Jenna was a vision as she walked down the aisle in a custom gown by a Miami based bridal designer whose family has been in the bridal business since the 1950s. “Everything from the lace, to the intricate crystal detail, to the silk sash was handmade just for me,” Jenna expresses with gratitude. Seeing Jake’s smiling face as she proceeded down the aisle to Bela Fleck’s bluegrass instrumental song, “Big Country”, immediately affirmed their deep love for one another. Before the pastor of Jenna’s home church completed their personalized wedding service with compiled perspectives of the Cassady love story from bride and groom, bridal party, and family, the couple’s close friend, Zach Longoria, (whose band also played at their reception), and the bride’s aunt sang “Marry Me”, setting the perfect romantic tone for the rest of the wedding.

LIFESTYLE Gorjess: Get the Look
“Our wedding was magical,” shares Jenna. “We embraced every moment with our closest loved ones throughout the entire weekend and got to spend some intimate time with our favorite people before we became husband and wife.” Although the idyllic venue, romantic music and stunning decor were all key factors for making theirs an undeniably wow wedding, what truly made the Cassady wedding unforgettable for this beautiful couple were the people who gathered with them to celebrate and support them in the biggest moment of their lives.

This contemporary condo offers class and comfort in the center of it all. story by donna ison | photos by shaun ring
When it comes to real estate, we all know the most important factor— location. This contemporary condo has location to spare. Sitting atop some of the city’s hottest restaurants and retail, it is also close enough to Rupp Arena to hear the cheers from a Wildcat win and within easy walking distance to the Kentucky Theater, Thursday Night Live, and all the rest that downtown has to offer. Initially, location was basically all the property had going for it. When purchased by the owner in 2018, the condominium was a “white box,” meaning it was essentially a drywalled shell with a concrete floor and generic electric, plumbing and HVAC. Luckily, the husband and wife team of Barbie and Bill Pickett of Pickett Homes, a residential construction and interior design company, had nearly 30 years of experience to give to the project. Bill says of their long-working partnership, “Barbie has the vision. And, we work together coordinating all aspects of construction to make sure it all comes together.” Right off the bat, Bill recognized big potential steeped in big logistical challenges. For example, figuring out how to transport supplies to the 5th and 6th floors. With the elevator as the primary mode for moving appliances, furnishings, and building materials, it was a delicate feat to get large items, like the refrigerator, to their destination. The truly heavy lifting, like placing dozens of 200-pound paver stones onto the rooftop garden, required a crane. When construction was complete, Barbie took over. She begins every new job with a “fact-finding” expedition, which involves “finding out the personality and lifestyle of my client and then creating the space based on what would bring them pleasure on a daily basis.” About this client, Barbie states, “He wanted a contemporary loft look. And, he is a bourbon collector, so I incorporated some elements from that industry. Obtaining original art from local artists was also important, which helped set the vision for the rest of the design elements.” The result of the 10-month-long renovation is a condominium fit for a king, or in this case a single professional who craves comfort, appreciates convenience and enjoys entertaining and hosting out-of-town guests.

Upon opening the door, you step into a lofty, great room with floor-to-ceiling windows providing a stunning view of the cityscape. To the right, you’ll find a wall of vintage photographs procured from the archives of the Herald-Leader. Each celebrates a scene from Lexington’s history, and even includes a picture of President John F. Kennedy making his way down Main Street. Our state’s heritage is evident throughout the home. According to Barbie, “In every room there’s a little bit of Kentucky flair.” The great room lends itself to both quiet evenings and game night parties by combining a large kitchen and commodious den. The warm beige and heathered hardwood floor, from Carpet One, sets the tone. A stone corner fireplace, by Housewarmings, both anchors the room and blocks an unsightly air conditioning unit on the next building. And a neutral palette of greys with natural woods and pops of blue—UK, of course—enhances the relaxing atmosphere.

The kitchen is a perfect balance of form and function. Along with Barbie, Linda Bratton of Architectural Kitchen and Baths was instrumental in the design process of this room, as well as the two baths. Linda, who has been an interior designer for over 25 years, wanted the final effect to be “sleek and sophisticated,” but also welcoming and able to accommodate crowds during get togethers. She says, “We didn’t want it to feel like a sport’s bar.” Barbie adds, “I knew we had an opportunity to make a statement with the kitchen and could not be happier with how the combination of stainless appliances and the dark slab door style really set the stage for the rest of the space.”

Flat panel cabinetry in an alder finish hide Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, including a refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, steam oven, refrigerated beverage drawers, and ice maker. In contrast, a silver metallic subway tile backsplash from Louisville Tile and stainless-steel stove and range hood add an industrial edge. The countertops, by Quality Stone Countertops, are of a leathered granite surface with rough and smooth comingling. This fits perfectly with Barbie’s aesthetic—“I love to combine a lot of different textures.” In addition to the kitchen peninsula, the women wanted a spot for more formal dining. “But, I just didn’t want to plunk down a table,” says Barbie. They found the solution in a table fabricated by Burton Made from a slice of ash wood and fitted it around the peninsula. The table brings a unique, rustic component to the otherwise modern area and lends itself to a more intimate eating experience, while still being open to the rest of the room.

The living area has several stand-out features. On the high-tech side, a flat-screened television and state-of-the-art sound system from Barney Miller’s and remote shades from Hunter Douglas Gallery afford ambiance and privacy. To incorporate more of the rural Bluegrass, Burton Made also designed a wooden wine bar and shelving to display the owner’s extensive bourbon collection, which is cleverly placed beneath the stairs.

One of Barbie’s biggest challenges was transforming the condo’s smallest room into a multi-purpose space that would meet the client’s need for a place to workout, store his books and supply additional sleeping. She addressed the problem with a custom-designed unit from Inspired Closets that houses a queen-sized Murphy Bed with built-in lighting discreetly behind a set of sliding shelves.

Both the owner and designer agree on their favorite portion of the home—the rooftop patio. Barbie laughs, “From here, you can see no less than seven steeples.” The 600-square-foot outdoor entertaining space, constructed by Nature’s Expressions, is so well-appointed there is hardly reason to go indoors. In addition to the spectacular scenery, it boasts a covered kitchen equipped with refrigerator, ice maker and grill; ample bar seating; and a 65-inch TV and sound system from Barney Miller’s. A bourbon barrel-wall gives another nod to Kentucky. There is also an adjacent turfed lounging area with built-in bench seating and Adirondack chairs surrounding a blue, metal drum firepit by Housewarmings. About the outdoor space, Nature’s Expression’s owner Dave Miller says, “Our team, consisting of landscape architect, project manager, carpenters, horticulturalists, and others, came through in a big way on this one. It had challenges, but the results speak for themselves.” Second only to the patio as the owner’s favorite aspect of the home is the art. Each piece was locally-purchased and includes artists, such as Riley Jackson, Cher Devereaux, Clifford Goss, Laura Orduna, Ford Smith, and Annette Poitau. With the Lexington Center expansion, construction of the City Center complex, and completion of Town Branch Park, an urban park and community gathering space, downtown Lexington living is becoming even more convenient and exciting. And, this condo puts its owner in prime position to take advantage of it all.

Q+A BARBIE PICKETT OF PICKETT HOMES Where do you find your inspiration as a designer? Inspiration can come from anywhere—travel, architecture, fabrics, and hobbies.
How would you describe your decorating style? Eclectic, warm, and inviting. I really like to incorporate a mix of textures with pops of color.
Why is color so important and how can a client find their perfect palette? Color greatly effects your mood and sets the feel for a living space. Establishing the perfect color palette with my clients requires a lot of time in conversation to determine their likes and dislikes. From the beginning, your decorating choices will be easier and help one room connect and flow to the next.
Which design trends are you most excited about in 2019? Less is more! A less cluttered look is an updated look and allows you to focus more intently on the main focal points of the space. Select goods and materials that are both beautiful and practical and easier to maintain than previous high-end or high-tech materials.
What are favorite items from your own home? I like to collect timeless pieces that can always be mixed into a room in my house. Mainly wall art, area rugs and accent pieces. Invest in a few items that are timeless and can be used over the years as you update your style and colors.
What is a common misconception about working with a designer? I think it is a common assumption that working with a designer will be more expensive. In reality, interior designers can save you money in the long run, as they will be able to guide you to the correct selections the first time. More often than not, you are more apt to be content with the final product when working with a qualified designer.
How should one go about choosing the right designer for their project? You are hiring a designer for their knowledge. There are so many different products on the market which may or may not be suited to your project, but having the expertise of a designer allows you to know that in advance. Make sure your designer can help you throughout your total project including space changes. Through their continued education of current products, value, quality, trends, space planning and other elements appropriate to your project, you will end with a unique space created for you. You can ask for references, check their current and past projects, and interview the designer to ensure you can communicate easily with each other.

Peaceful Night
Behr’s Peaceful Night (590F-7) is an unexpected choice for a guy’s room or man cave, but it cleverly provides a hint of Kentucky blue without overwhelming the senses. Some people are afraid of adding too many accessories to men’s rooms. Navy shades work as neutrals, supporting mixed metals, woods and textures. Here, Peaceful Night adds a strong sense of calm, comfort and cohesion. This blue has an antiqued quality that screams “Americana”. So naturally, it looks great paired with red, white and gold! Behr suggests pairing it with a barn red, like Licorice Stick (S-G-170) for a classic look. Stir in some yellow-gold, antique white and wood and this is a timeless palette that men will love.

Here, Peaceful Night provides a subtle theme for a music room. It would also make a clever choice for kitchen cabinetry, a dining room or an office. Outside, it’s a classic choice for shutters: imagine it with a Licorice Stick front door! Actual colors may vary from this printed representation.

KENDAL BUTLER AND TODD HARP WITH SON HENRY written by lauren rogers photos by jesse samuel anderson | cophoto photo location: ashford acres inn
K
endal Butler and Todd Harp waited to become parents but when the timing was right, the stars aligned, and the universe showed up in a big way for them. With the landmark supreme court ruling in 2015 the couple was able to legally marry so they could both be listed on their child’s birth certificate. Kendal affirms, “This was important to us because before that breakthrough, most LGBT parents had to choose one parent to be the legal parent.” Once they began the process with Leigh Shapiro-Walton from Heart to Home Adoption Agency in late May of 2015, Todd recalls that Kendal would often quote Johann Wolfgang von Goethe saying, “At the moment of commitment the entire universe conspires to assist you.” For this inspiring team of Super Dads, no words could be truer. A few months, a litany of background checks, and one mountain of paperwork later, the couple were in their final approval stage of the adoption process. Their adoption counselor instructed them to begin letting people know they were almost ready as most adoptions that she handles are created by word of mouth where someone hears of a baby being available and has also heard of a family looking. On Sunday August 23, 2015 Todd says, “As I went to sleep that night, I said a simple prayer. ‘God, I think we are ready for a baby. If you think we are ready, would you send one to us.’ I knew that all things are not on my time schedule but as I started to doze off, I happened to think of my first cousin who is a school psychologist in Louisville and decided I would contact her the next day.”

As fate would have it, Todd’s cousin did in fact know of a potential fit and on August 24 of 2015, Kendal was driving to meet their seven-month-old son for the very first time. “I was tied up at work and couldn’t leave right then but Kendal was in his truck almost immediately. He and I talked a couple of times as he drove. We were both experiencing many emotions. We knew not to get our hopes up too high as things can often change quickly and this might not be the right situation,” says Todd. Kendal adds, “I asked Todd, ‘If they let me bring this baby home, are you OK with it?’ He said yes but, like our attorney, assured me that wasn’t going to happen. I knew it would.”
OUR “GOTCHA DAY”!
That evening, Kendal drove home to their farm with their precious miracle on board. “I opened his truck door and met my son for the first time,” Todd recalls. “I got him out of the car seat and he immediately smiled and grabbed my cheeks.” Kendal, Todd and Henry quickly moved through the court proceedings and on December 22, 2015, Henry legally became their son. “We celebrate his ‘Gotcha Day’ with a party every year on August 24 however because regardless of legality, Henry became our son the moment we met him and we have never looked back,” states Todd. Today, Henry Butler-Harp is a very happy, healthy four-year-old who loves singing, playing in the mud, and working on his parents’ 50-acre farm complete with dairy goats, cattle, and horses. “Henry is growing up in his own petting zoo!” Todd laughs. “He loves helping in the barn, feeding the goats and checking on the cattle and his pony named Pete.” Kendal expresses, “Becoming a dad at 43 has made me super focused on enjoying each phase and building positive memories for Henry.” Todd echoes the sentiment and says that his favorite part about being a dad is “to see Henry run towards me with a huge smile and want to be picked up and hugged.” While balance is tough, Kendal and Todd feel blessed by a supportive village that help them in so many ways. “We both have full-time jobs, a working farm to take care of and commutes,” Kendal discloses. “Henry’s grandparents, aunts and uncles are so supportive and helpful.” Todd agrees that while it is definitely hard, they make sure Henry is always the top priority.

Though they try not to focus on it, they would like to take away the prejudices LGBT families often face. Kendal divulges, “Some people won’t like or support us because our family composition is different. I can’t shield our son from people who don’t celebrate our little family, but hopefully, we can raise him to be a proud young man who can weather those storms.” Todd remarks, “I love our little family and how we love and take care of each other. Henry has two loving and supportive parents, they just both happen to be daddies. No matter what, I will be a father until the day I die, and I will worry about him, love him, nurture him, challenge him and want the best for him until the very end.” When asked how they would like to be remembered as a father, the answer was mutual: for Henry to know he was so wanted and so loved. “I believe the world conspired to bring us all together,” voices Kendal. “I want to secure his future for him and equip him in every way possible to be a happy, healthy adult.” Todd agrees and asserts, “I would never describe myself as super. But, if I am a successful dad, it would be because I try to be a supportive and loving dad that works hard to be the best I can for my son. I want him to always be able to tell me things and not fear judgement. I want him to know that whatever he does, there will be unconditional love.”

Pets
story by Alexis Patinos
The health food industry has picked up plenty of rapport in the last few years as more and more Americans are making a conscious decision to consume healthier foods. While some of the diets have factual evidence behind their claims to boosting metabolism, help consumers lose weight, or build lean muscle, some diets are undoubtedly marketing gimmicks that capitalize on the consumer’s lack of knowledge in the quickly growing health food industry. Regardless of where one may fall on this spectrum in regards to their own diets, recent studies in the animal health industry have shown that pet parents are starting to apply similar diet alterations to their four-legged companions. However, are the diets that benefit you really beneficial to your pet? We believe your pet’s diet should be left to the experts - veterinarians - and here is why. Although some experts still debate whether domesticated dogs are considered omnivores or carnivores like their wolf ancestors, for our sake, we are going to err on the side of domesticated dogs being omnivorous eaters. As we learned in grade school, omnivores are those animals that eat both meat and plant-based material. While most high-quality canine diets have meat protein sources listed as the main ingredients, it is important to note that these diets still include grain sources in their diet formulations. However, what are the effects of the growing trend of going totally grain free, or substituting an exotic protein source for the traditional chicken or beef in a canine diet? In 2018 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began investigating cases of heart disease in dogs that were potentially linked to their diet. Specifically, they are examining dilated cardiomyopathy, or DCM, and its relationship with dogs being fed BEG diets (boutique, exotic, and grain-free). DCM is a disease of the heart muscle affecting its ability to pump and contract. The chambers of the heart can become enlarged and as the disease worsens, the heart’s ability to function as a pump to deliver blood and oxygen to the body deteriorates. It can also cause congestion of blood in the lungs and fluid accumulation in and around the heart, abdomen, or lungs. This enlarged, overloaded heart can ultimately result in congestive heart failure and potentially premature or even sudden death - a loss no pet owner wants to experience prematurely. Signs of DCM vary from exercise intolerance, weight loss, and lethargy early in the disease to increased respiratory rate and effort, coughing, and weakness. More severe signs include respiratory 110
distress, a tongue that is blue in color, abdominal distension, and collapse. The incidence of DCM increases with age and is thought to be genetically linked in certain large type breeds such as the Doberman Pinscher, Great Dane, Saint Bernard, Irish Wolfhound, and Cocker Spaniel to name a few. The FDA diet study is focused on diets whose main ingredients include peas, lentils, other legumes, and potatoes as substitutes for traditional grains like wheat, rye, and barley. Exotic proteins including lamb, venison, bison, salmon, and kangaroo and vegan or vegetarian canine diets are also being investigated. The FDA and veterinarians alike have noted what appears to be an increased occurrence of DCM in dog breeds who are not predisposed to the condition and who are being fed BEG diets, however, there is currently no definitive link between grain-free diets or exotic proteins and the occurrence of DCM. What we do know is that nutritional deficiencies of taurine and carnitine have been linked to the incidence of DCM, however, some veterinary nutritionists believe there are also other dietary factors that can contribute to the occurrence of DCM. With a higher incidence of DCM correlating with the recent changes in canine diets being marketed to consumers, BEG diets have been under heavy investigation for their potential contribution to increased incidents of DCM in non-predisposed breeds. The FDA, American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), and American Kennel Club (AKC) all shed light on the importance of pet owners being aware of the FDA investigation taking place and further encourage pet owners to seek professional guidance from a veterinarian before making diet changes for their pet. In a time where we want to be healthier than ever, it’s only fitting that we would want the same for our pets. With many new exotic and trendy diet modifications making their way into the pet food industry, it can be easy to fall allure to a fancy, boutique brand of dog food without knowing the nutritional profile demanded by your pet. With little modern research on the nutritional relevance of some of these exotic ingredients included in the popular BEG diets, we believe you should leave your pet’s diet modifications to the experts, veterinarians and animal nutritionists, when it comes to finding a well-balanced diet that provides your canine companion with the nutrients needed to live a long, healthy life.

he old warehouse building comes back to life with multiple new concepts by Cole Arimes. Located on the corner of Walton and National, one of Lexington’s newest restaurants is now open and it definitely stands to impress. Named after the John G. Epping bottling plant, Epping’s on Eastside is the home to several new creative concepts from chef Cole Arimes, owner of Coles 735 Main. Offering what Arimes describes as a “sandwich centric” menu and “expansion of Cole’s 735 Main bar bites” the 11,000 square foot building is open and airy as you walk into a bright space greeted by the aroma of fresh baked goods and a modern coffee bar serving up Nate’s Coffee. As you travel into the main dining space you’ll find a gorgeous, show-stopping 30 seat bar surrounded by a clean, upscale yet insanely comfortable TV free dining room. Looking up, you’re reminded that you are indeed in a warehouse building. “It really is a neat building with a lot of natural light,” Arimes said. “We’ve let the building speak for itself and didn’t have to do a whole lot to it,” Arimes mentions. A Lexington native who spent 18 years perfecting his craft in Cincinnati, Cole is excited to be opening a location that he’s had his eye on for the last two years. “It is neat to be back in my old stomping grounds. “This neighborhood means a lot to me. I have a big vision for this warehouse block, I want this place to become a neighborhood spot,” says Arimes. The coffee shop and bakery are also home to the smaller concept, Poppy and Olive, named after Arimes children. “It’s what we called both of our children when we were expecting,” he said. “My daughter was Olive and my son was Poppy. We kept their genders a surprise so it’s a fun little homage to them with the name.” His vision for the space is to create a restaurant that kids will enjoy but their parents can also
feel relaxed and comfortable bringing the whole family along to dine out effortlessly in a judgment-free zone. With a similar menu to Epping’s, Poppy and Olive focuses on different steps of service such as the craft basket that arrives at the table to keep the little ones occupied while the parents look the menu over in peace. Cole emphasizes attention to detail such as the coloring pads designed seasonally by Cricket Press, the homemade play dough and the family time card designed to engage the entire family with fun questions. With additional kid-friendly menu items such as the Charfruterie Board (a creative combination of grapes, strawberries, bananas, apples, and a honey yogurt dipping sauce) and entrees such as sweet potato gnocchi and grilled chicken fingers, Arimes set out to create dishes that kids would love and the parents could feel good about. As you wander into the bar area you will find TVs and a large community table that Cole envisions new friends meeting up to watch the big game or neighbors gathering for a drink and great meal shared together. The menu at Epping’s, which focuses on Cole’s passion for house-cured meats, supporting the regions diverse farming and food community and keeping a local-first mindset as they create each dish. Cole recommends first, cozying up to the bar and snagging an order of the butternut squash hummus, a creamy puree of sweet squash topped with dried cranberries, pumpkin seeds, fresh orange, fresno chili, herbs and lavash for dipping paired alongside his favorite cocktail on the menu, the East Sider: a combination of house-infused vanilla vodka, houseblended passion fruit liqueur, passion fruit puree, lime juice and lemon-lime soda.

For dinner, he suggests the Pastrami Reuben made from housecured and smoked beef pastrami, sauerkraut made in house, melty gruyere cheese and perhaps the best 1000 Island dressing you’ll ever taste all piled atop house-made rye bread - which Arimes says “is just to keep your hands clean” and served alongside chips. The impressive dessert menu created by pastry chef, Laura Clay, is also not to be missed. With gluten-free and vegan options available including her super popular gluten-free brownie and kid favorite, the homemade no-added-sugar pop tarts. Arimes notes that although the food is his passion and what brings guests through the door, it’s the service that truly sets them apart from any other restaurant here in town. “Our guests will have the absolute best possible service so no matter what happens in the kitchen, great service can elevate and even save any food. I love trying new things - lately, it’s been fermentation and long cures. The daily grind of the menu can wear you out so I have to explore. I also love dining out. The best meal I have ever had was Morisketta (I learned it from a dishwasher) which is basically braised spare ribs in a spicy tomato sauce over rice and topped with queso fresco - wow!
When you’re not working are you cooking or grabbing carryout?
Carry out … most likely you’ll find me at A&W Burgers.
Favorite cocktail?
“The East Sider.” Our bar program does house-made infusions and bitters. We take local cherries and turn them into house-made maraschino cherries and we also do our own homemade syrups.
Favorite dish from your childhood?
My mom would kill me but Spanakopita at my Yia Yia’s - my Greek grandmother on dad’s side of the family.
A piece of advice for someone who dreams of pursuing a career in food.
You have to love what you do. If you don’t love it, don’t do it. Get into a good restaurant and learn. The experience is the best teacher.

Plenty of TVs, ample seating, truly great food and a fantastic atmosphere make KSBar one of a kind. Great cocktails, delicious food and an atmosphere that doesn’t scream “sports bar” makes it a fantastic choice in the Warehouse Block area. Try the Sportsman sandwich, featuring craft beer battered white fish, Bibb lettuce, tomato slices and a cilantro lime mayo, or order some Lamb Chop Pops for the table.

SPECULATION SEASON G
oing into the last month of the season, there’s almost always as much speculation on which Kentucky players will leave for the NBA as there is on what seed Kentucky will have in the NCAA Tournament. The problem is that NBA scouts/officials are not allowed to publicly comment on potential draft picks and players are not about to indicate what they might do when the season ends. Then there is coach John Calipari—who is always going to point out the best traits individual players have and tout their future capability because that’s part of his program. What about all the NBA mock drafts that have sophomore PJ Washington and freshman Keldon Johnson as likely firstround draft picks? Or the ones that have freshman Ashton Hagans and Tyler Herro as first-round picks in 2020 (after their sophomore seasons)? Of course, there are also some mock drafts with Herro and Hagans being picked in this year’s draft. So what will happen? Well, here’s my educated guess — and it’s nothing more than a guess with a little helpful insight from a few folks with NBA connections who have to remain anonymous because of their jobs.
124
22
REID TRAVIS
Okay, he’s going to be gone because he’s a fifth-year senior. The question is where, or if, he will be drafted. The guess here is that he’ll go in the second round because his lack of overall athleticism will hurt his stock.
25
PJ WASHINGTON
He could have been a second-round pick last year but came back to UK to improve his draft status and has. “He just needs to keep showing he can do it consistently. He has made a lot of progress and has to keep adding on to what he has built,” one NBA source said. Improved 3-point shooting is one plus for Washington but his more consistent effort/production is even bigger. “He is doing good things on both ends of the floor. If he plays with energy, he’s really an attractive guy. Everybody is looking for winners and PJ is helping himself right now,” one NBA scout said. The guess is not a lottery pick but middle of the first round.

NBA JUNE 20 DRAFT 2019
story by Larry Vaught photos by Jeff Houchin
3
KELDON JOHNSON
He’s had some low points this season but Johnson still seems destined to be a lottery pick in part because he plays on the perimeter where teams are always looking for help. He’s become a better 3-point shooter and he is a high energy, dynamic playmaker in the open court that teams like and always need. He’s still a work in progress on defense but no one doubts his skill level or athleticism. He looks like another UK lottery pick.
4
NICK RICHARDS
Calipari seldom goes more than a few days without touting Richards’ athleticism but the sophomore’s lack of consistency leaves a lot of questions. Many expect him to go ahead and roll the dice by putting his name into the draft despite his tendency to disappear too often. Could be a second-round pick by a quality team willing to sign him for a minimum amount, put him in the developmental league and hope he puts his overall game together.
2
ASHTON HAGANS
/ 14
TYLER HERRO
Hagans can defend as well as anyone, Herro can score as well as anyone. Hagans has to improve his outside shot to where he’s not an offensive liability and Herro could still improve his defense. Most NBA folks I know think both should wait until the 2020 draft. Herro might become a late first-round draft pick with a huge finish or big workouts for NBA teams. However, the guess here today is that both will be back at UK next year and NBA scouts said that's the advice they would give both.
23
EJ MONTGOMERY
Don’t be surprised to see him put his name into the draft like Washington did last year. If he does, he’ll likely get the same feedback Washington did—stay at UK, improve his perimeter shooting and show he can produce consistently like Washington has. That's why I expect him back at UK next season.
