’ work is to help art come to life and touch many lives. Because when art’s out there opening eyes, minds and hearts, individuals are enriched and communities rise and shine. With your help we help art be made. And make its way into the world. Annual grants help dozens of regional artists and organizations big and small build the infrastructure they need to light up our lives with music, dance, theater, and the visual and literary arts. Events like our enormously popular LexArts HOP, LexArts Gallery exhibitions, city-wide Public Art projects, online Arts Events Calendar and an exciting new LexArts App (coming soon) that will connect the community with art that’s everywhere. With continued support, our mission continues.

A Space for Everyone! Etheirveryone needs a space to call own. So it's not surprising
that people are coming to expect their homes to offer more than just sleeping, dining and entertaining space; they're looking for multi-purpose rooms that do more. These ideas will help you think of creative ways to give everyone in your home a little space...

Work
& Play Most people think of playrooms as a kids-only domain. But giving adults a little space can help make the most of your room… and give you the opportunity to incorporate a little play into your work, too!
While it can sound counterproductive to place your home office in a playroom, this can actually help you manage your work-life balance, especially if you do at-home instruction. Just be sure you have a second area in your home where you can take video calls. Another way to bring the whole family together? Arts and crafts! Placing crafting stations and art supplies in a playroom allows everyone to create together. You can decorate the space with your creations and have everyone feel like a famous artist. Think of ways to make this a creative, relaxing space for everyone. Get playful with the décor! This is a fun place to experiment with trendy, quirky design, as it will change as your family ages and grows. Fun wallpaper, funky furnishings and cool light fixtures belong in this room.

If you already have a mudroom, you don’t need to hear anyone sing the praises of this funny little space. For the uninitiated, they originated as a space for everyone to shed their muddy boots after a workday. But they’ve become a family command station, the “a place for everything and everything in its place” space for many homes. Wet umbrellas, backpacks, dirty shoes, gardening goods, leashes, sun hats… everything you need to make the transition from indoors to outdoors gets stored here. If you want a mudroom of your own, you don’t need much more than clever storage and a bench. But the best mudrooms make a little space for each member of the household. Whittney Parkinson Design

Lochwood-Hozier Custom Homes Laundry rooms are the oft-forgotten spaces in our homes, design-wise. We think about how to place the laundry machines for maximum efficiency and spare a thought for folding and storage… then leave it at that. But it’s a missed opportunity to squeeze in a little space for our four-legged family members.

Pet spas are a godsend for families with dogs. They eliminate the struggle of getting your pooch in and out of the tub when he needs a bath, saving knees and backs a lot of pain. The water hookups in the laundry room make it easy to add this feature in. The laundry room is also a convenient place for litter boxes, dog beds, kennels and food bowls, especially if you have a shy pet who needs private time. Just be sure your pet isn’t afraid of the washing machine or dryer when it’s in use!

TOUR of HOMES:
HISTORIC meets MODERN by Taylor Riley | courtesy photos
Tucked back off an Anchorage, Ky road sits an eclectic home built in 1894, renovated to suit its residents of the 21st Century. The 7,991-square-foot Coldeway House is a designated Kentucky landmark and named on the National Register of Historic Houses. Coldeway, located on East Osage Road, features a Queen Anne frame, shingle-style and weatherboard, constructed by William B. Wood for Mary Buckner Coldeway. A few years later, it was sold to Percival Moore, the developer of the Louisville, Anchorage and Pewee Valley Electric Railway (Interurban), which operated from 1902 to 1934. The home has an unusual side elevation with two curved, recessed balconies with ornate details. The large neo-colonial porch was added by the owner Creel Brown, a whiskey distiller, in 1912. The house was restored in the 1980s by Creel’s granddaughter, Joann Brown Schuler. A 3,000-square-foot addition was added by its current owners in 2019. Currently, Coldeway sits on 7.85 acres, surrounded by a four-board fence with a 2,400-square-foot barn. The entryway includes marble flooring, updated fixtures, dramatic trim detail and high ceilings, bringing in natural light from the rear windows and staircase. A drop zone is included by the side door off the porte cochère, a covered area off the outside of the home.

Lastly, on the bottom floor, the primary suite can be closed off with sliding, stained glass doors from the original part of the home. The primary bedroom has vaulted ceilings with wood beam details, a fireplace plumbed for gas logs and hardwood flooring. The suite contains two walk-in closets with custom wood closet systems and a large island with drawers and plenty of hanging and shelf space. The primary bath holds a freestanding, polished chrome-finish tub, as well as a large tiled shower with frameless glass and dual entry. One can keep warm and private with heated flooring and separate vanities and lavatories. The lower level addition includes a two-car tandem garage, additional laundry room, storage room, full bath and access to the rear patio. Up the stairs, a sitting room greets visitors with hardwood flooring, double closets and access to the second floor covered porch. Bedroom 1 has hardwood flooring, a decorative fireplace, built-in bench seating, a fully remodeled en suite bath and a dressing room with a walk-in closet and private laundry room. Upstairs bedrooms 2 and 3 have hardwood flooring, a decorative fireplace and a closet with wood shelving. The full guest bath was completely remodeled with a paneled glass shower door, tile flooring and custom cabinetry. A third floor is a bonus space for the home with three extra bedrooms, a family room, a game room and a full bath, as well as access to the rooftop and exterior balconies. The 7-bedroom, 7-bathroom Coldeway House was purchased by its current owners in 2018. “This is an iconic home in the heart of Anchorage with so much history,” says Lynette Masterson, friend of the family and real estate agent with Lenihan Sotheby’s Realty. “It has been beautifully restored and renovated offering a unique mix of original details and current design trends.” For more information on available listings, call Lynette Masterson at 502-643-4445 or email at lmasterson@lsir.com. •

Outdoor Trends
You'll Want for Your Own Yard! by Allyson Mattingly
T
here’s nothing like Dogwood Winter to make you fear for your newly planted bulbs’ lives. While you’re brainstorming creative ways to ensure your plants make it to fruition, we’ve compiled some of the year’s trends to make your backyard more than a plot of grass. If you’re ready to transform your backyard into your own personal paradise, we recommend you read on.

Seamless Spaces
1
Outdoor kitchens have been popular for years, but outdoor living rooms and home offices are recently catching the eyes of homeowners. When you’re done gardening, grilling, or catching some rays, enjoy the tranquility of the outdoors with all the added comforts of your living room. These spaces don’t include just a chair or two, but entire outdoor furniture sets, fireplaces, rugs, TVs, and any other accessories you need to achieve maximum comfort. While all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, Jack still needs to get some work done! Many professionals continue to have a hybrid work schedule in 2022, making a home office more necessary than ever before. If you’re one of such professionals, moving your home office outdoors can provide mood boosting energy, plus some fantastic lighting for your Zoom sessions. To create your outdoor workspace, you’ll need a desk and chair which can be substituted with a chaise lounge and side table, shade for those days when you are squinting at your laptop screen, privacy to muffle any noisy neighbors, and decor like tropical trees and flowers. You’ll never want to go back to the office with this setup!

Resort Dreaming It seems that after two years of staying in, people are dreaming of going far, far away who would’ve thought? Pinterest has seen an incredible increase of users searching for resort aesthetics and other vacation-related trends. If you can’t actually jet to Turks and Caicos, you might as well make your backyard feel like one of the islands’ finest 5-star resorts. If you’re dreaming of resort living, consider thrifting some pieces of rattan furniture, putting up a couple fringed patio umbrellas, planting vibrant, tropical plants, incorporating eye-catching canopies, and using only cocktail glasses worthy of a tiny pink umbrella. To cool you off after a long day of luxury, an outdoor shower is also a feature to consider for an authentic resortlike experience. If that sounds like a dream but your reality is living in the Midwest, try an indoor shower with floor-to-ceiling frosted glass or a bathroom on the balcony.

Blossoming Gardens We may be using neutral tones inside our homes, but the backyard is for maximalism and color. Think less monochrome and more polychrome with plants that transport you to the tropics, bicolor flowers, fragrant herbs, dark foliage, and vivid containers. If you’re new to tropical plants, we recommend checking out Rose Mallows, Cannas, and Caladiums. Make these plants stand out even more by surrounding them with dark foliage plants like Crepe Myrtle bushes, Sweet potato vines, Ninebark shrubs, or Heuchera plants. Some of our favorite bicolor plants include Dahlias, Hydrangeas, Tulips, and Irises. Growing your own food is not only satisfying, but healthy and fun, too! Whether you want to plant a few herbs or a garden to supply your whole kitchen, the grow-your-own trend is increasing in popularity. Some of the easiest veggies to grow are green beans, cucumbers, summer squash, spinach, bell peppers, and tomatoes.

Once you’ve worked in your yard and tended to your garden, you’re going to need something to do with the fruits (or veggies) of your labor. Putting together a harvest basket for friends, family, or neighbors is a perfect way to get some social interaction and make sure your leftover harvest doesn’t go to waste. It may be simple, but it’s heartfelt and will be much appreciated! You can purchase beautiful, affordable baskets from Stonewall Kitchen, Etsy, Earth Easy, and more. Fill them with homegrown vegetables and flowers for everyone to enjoy.
As a bonus, a harvest basket or garden hod can make your everyday harvesting chores a whole lot easier.

If the thought of cutting your flowers makes you shudder, plant a garden specifically for cutting. Sprinkle some seeds in a sunny spot in your yard, water, and you’ll be crafting a gorgeous homemade bouquet in no time.

5 Bird is the Word While I used to think bird watching was exclusively for birding clubs and my grandma, I now enjoy discovering what types of birds call my yard home. Apparently, other homeowners feel the same way, as the sales of bird feeders and birdseed increased by almost 50% in 2021, and continue to increase this year. (Although, this could be because our editor Fran loves birds!)

If you want to learn more about the birds in your backyard, you can download Audubon's Bird Guide app that can identify over 800 species of North American birds. To contribute to your colorful garden and provide food for birds, you can plant Sunflowers, Dogwood trees, Cardinal flowers, and Milkweed. •

For the day look, focus on natural materials in the accessories. The varied textures help give depth and visual excitement to the solid-colored jumpsuit. But the neutral hues ensure that they aren't overwhelming. The Canvas bracelet and earrings bring just a little whimsy and charm to an otherwise tropical look. Absolutely office-approved! To make the leap to evening, swap those heels for something a little higher, with clean lines. A gold hoop and a thick rope chain might feel a little retro, but they're classics for a reason! Throw on a huge, chunky statement ring for added glamour. Finally, finish the look off with a large envelope clutch that won't distract anyone from your shine!

Night How to Make the Transition:
A good sheath dress is like a Swiss Army knife: it can do it all! The interesting shoulders on this one help it stand out from the crowd. For daytime, this simple silhouette demands classic accessories. Think of fun ways to bring in interesting textures, like the stones set in this bangle, the pearl drops on these hoops or the tassle on the tote bag. For night, however, break all the rules. Mix punk and pearls for a fun twist. Go heavy metal with your accessories, bringing lots of gold to the party, like with multiple chunky rings or the thick chain on this clutch.

As we age, our hair changes along with us. Many women choose to color their hair as it starts to gray, but times are changing and gray is in, ladies!
When your hair does start to gray, it’s important to modify your hair-care routine to keep your locks looking luscious. Gray hair strands are typically coarser, drier, and harder to manage, meaning you need trustworthy products to care for your new 'do. If you’re ready to begin the journey of embracing your gray and revealing your true, confident self, check out our favorite products for nourishing and managing gray hair.
Kérastase Soleil Masque UV Defense Active Madison Reed Color Reviving Gloss in Crema Whether your gray is natural or from a bottle, use this gloss every two to three weeks to give your color a revival and refresh. The gloss is a semi-permanent color product and produces a sheer tint on your hair while getting rid of any unwanted brassiness. Its ingredients include keratin to strengthen your hair and increase elasticity, along with Argan Oil to make your hair shine from root to tip, and Ginseng Root Extract to help with split ends and create soft, silky hair.
Use this Kérastase hair mask to restore movement and body to your vulnerable gray hair. Gray hair typically lacks melanin, which provides the pigment giving hair its natural color, and also protects it from the sun. When that melanin is gone, our hair is at the mercy of the elements, leaving it dry and brittle. This mask contains coconut water to hydrate, Vitamin E to reduce hair breakage, and a UV filter to minimize the effect of UV rays on the hair.
O&M Frizzy Logic Shine Spray To tame flyaways and frizz, use this shine-boosting spray directly onto your dry hair during the styling process. Gray hair can be more coarse than other colors, making it sometimes hard to manage. This spray takes very little effort to use and creates a glossy look, making all shades of gray thrive. It’s also lightweight, so it won’t weigh your hair down or make it feel oily. Instead, it will leave your hair feeling soft and nourished with ingredients like Cold Pressed Organic Argan Oil and Organic Macadamia Oil.

Did you know? Experts have something they call the 50-50-50 Rule: 50% of the population is about 50% gray at age 50.
Oribe Silverati Shampoo This shampoo (as well as its conditioner counterpart) is gentle on gray or white hair, leaving your hair soft, shiny, and protected. It brightens gray and silver hair while eliminating yellow tones, while also restoring structure and strength to the most damaged areas of your hair. The formula contains antioxidants and keratin which protect your locks against free radical damage, and also contains the Oribe Signature Complex. Their signature complex defends against environmental stressors and the deterioration of your natural keratin, and makes your hair smell stunning with its watermelon, lychee, and Edelweiss flower extracts.

Nanogen Hair Thickening Fibers As we age, not only does our hair go gray, but it also gets thinner, much to our dismay. This product is a keratin supplement that can improve the appearance of gray hair and restore your hair’s fullness and density in minutes. After styling your hair as you normally do, lightly sprinkle the product on areas where you need more volume and thickness, gently blending it in with your fingers. The 100% pure keratin fibers blend effortlessly with your hair to result in a full, stylish look.

AGELESS Makeup and Skin Care Tips:
With Grace
While we all have the desire to stay fresh-faced forever, aging – along with a few fine lines – is inevitable. Though fine lines are a sign of a long, well-lived life, most women don’t want to show them off to the whole world. Luckily, there are plenty of tips, tricks, and products to make you look like you haven’t aged a day since 30. As famed celebrity makeup artist Sandy Linter says, "there are no rules when using makeup, so have fun!" Embrace what beauty you have instead of trying to hide any flaws. From lightweight coverage to rocking a bold lip, here is our guide to makeup for mature skin. Anastasia Beverly Hills Magic Touch Concealer ($29 anastasiabeverlyhills.com)
Prep for Glowing Skin Before applying even a drop of makeup, you need to ensure you’re starting with clean, hydrated skin. Following a dedicated skincare routine – including daily cleansing and moisturizing with weekly exfoliating – is a major component for how makeup sits on your skin. Foundation tends to grab onto dry skin, which can make you look like you’re wearing heavy makeup. Exfoliating two or three times a week can keep your skin polished and make for a smooth application.
FARMACY Filling Good hyaluronic acid plumping serum ($44 sephora.com)
Once you’re done with your routine and your moisturizer has had time to sink in, it’s time to prime. Target fine lines or dry patches with a quick-absorbing primer to create a barrier between your skin and makeup and even out your skin tone.
Cover your Complexion
Kevyn Aucoin Foundation balm ($42 beautybay.com)
As hard as we may try, we can’t hide wrinkles, and the harder you try with your makeup, the more they will stand out. To ensure a radiant, more youthful complexion, try using a lightweight foundation or a BB cream that blends easily. When choosing a foundation, Sandy Linter recommends trying a shade slightly darker than your skin so you don’t look washed out. If you choose to apply concealer after your foundation for even-toned skin, use a lightweight, creamy concealer that is easy to blend. Use a shade that matches your foundation for spot coverage across your face, or one to two shades lighter for undereye coverage. To counteract dark circles and laugh lines, apply on the under eyes and the inner corners.
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Tint with hylauronic acid ($10 walmart.com) TOPSinLex.com | May 2022
KIEL'S Ultra Facial Overnight Hydrating Face Mask with 10.5% Squalane ($40 sephora.com) 85
Sculpt & Lift While blush can add a rosy glow to your cheeks, it can also highlight your fine lines and wrinkles. To prevent this, consider trying out a cream blush in place of powder blush. Blend it in gently with your fingertips or a damp beauty sponge and watch the product glide across your cheeks without disturbing your other face makeup. Most of us ladies have been taught to smile at yourself when you’re applying blush, but that may not be the case for mature skin. To enhance your face structure, you’ll want to apply the blush at the top of the cheekbone and blend inward.
Define the Lips As we age, our lips can become asymmetrical and less full due to decreased production of collagen and elastin. Using naturallooking lip liners can help bring back the look of full lips, like NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil. Before lining your lips, you want to make sure your liner is soft enough to glide smoothly over your skin during application. Once you're happy with your liner, apply a similar lipstick color and use a lip brush to slightly diffuse the edges for a softer look, says Sandy Linter. If you’re not in the mood for a matte look, apply some gloss and you’re out the door! •

I believe my empathy and support for women who need to feel empowered is my greatest asset in my role as Executive Director.” Carol says the success of Women Leading Kentucky isn’t because of her, though. “The hard-working members of our Board of Directors, Advisory Council, and staff are the heart and soul of the organization and I value their leadership.” Carol loves seeing how women are empowered through the connections they make at the organization’s events, such as their Roundtable Networking Luncheons. “So many women have told us that they have been promoted, brought in new business, and made life-long friends as a result of their involvement with Women Leading Kentucky.”

HOW NOT TO RAISE A by Ja ym e Jac k so n
1. DON’T MAKE IT EASY. “Kids today..” how many times have we said this or heard it? Throughout history, every generation swears that their generation is the last “great generation”. Baby Boomers will swear they have a better work ethic, Gen X’ers will tout that they have the best experience in technology and the “old ways” of doing business making them the perfect hybrid. As for Millennials, they may be faster but they all want to graduate high school or college and land a job with the title of VP all whilst working from home. I don’t agree that one generation is better than the other, but I do understand that how we raise the next generation will have some bearing on the type of adults that enter the work force and ultimately become our caregivers. Recently, I read an article by Julie Revelant, a health and journalist consultant, who recommends 10 tips to ensure we are raising responsible kids and grandkids. And let’s face it, we’ve all made some parenting missteps!
“It is more difficult in many ways for this generation to raise a wonderful child than it is to raise a brat,” said Elaine Rose Glickman, author of “Your Kid’s a Brat and It’s All Your Fault.” Parents in previous generations acted like parents: They expected obedience and respect and wanted to raise children who were resourceful and happy, “but they didn’t expect their children to be happy at every single moment,” she said. If you’re always trying to make your child’s life easy by solving their problems, offering them every single opportunity, and being their full-time cheerleader, it’s more likely they’ll be spoiled.
2. SET LIMITS. Most parents have no idea how to set limits, so they either don’t do it or only enforce those limits until they’re at the end of their rope, said Dr. Laura Markham, a clinical psychologist in New York City and author of “Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids: How to Stop Yelling and Start Connecting.” If you don’t set and stick to clear limits, your kids will push and push until they get their way. Realize that setting limits doesn’t have to be delivered as a harsh punishment, however, but in a firm, kind way that is still respectful of your child.
3. FOCUS ON WHAT’S IMPORTANT. Although you don’t want to set rigid expectations about everything, you should have rules about things that you consider non-negotiable. So although it might annoy you that your child doesn’t put his socks in the hamper, treating others with respect is a must. “Get clear about your values and act on those values and it will be easy to set limits,” Markham said.

4. ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR FEELINGS. Everyone wants to feel that their feelings matter and kids are no different. When your children are upset and acting out, acknowledge how they feel so they know you’re listening and concerned, but make sure they know they can’t behave any way they want. Your kids actually want you to set expectations and find comfort knowing that they’ll be enforced. “It’s a form of love and it’s a form of care to assert our authority with our children,” Glickman said.
5. DON’T GIVE IN. It can be hard to stay firm, especially when your kid is whining non-stop or other parents seem to be passing judgment when your kid is having a meltdown. But when you give in, more bratty behavior will ensue. Instead, be confident in who you are and what you want to accomplish as a parent. When you’re strong, your kids will realize that their behaviors won’t get them what they want at home or in the real world, Glickman said.
6. BE A ROLE MODEL. If you fly off the handle at a moment’s notice, chances are your kid will have temper tantrums too. “The research shows that children learn to regulate their emotions from their parents,” Markham said. The next time you feel overwhelmed, take a few deep breaths or go into another room for your own time out. If it’s a pattern, read a parenting book or find a mental health professional to learn some coping strategies.
7. ACT QUICKLY. Swift action is ideal to maintain behavior standards. For example, if your kids are fighting and you want to intervene to help them handle it, don’t wait. “Step in before you’re going to lose it,” Markham said.
8. INSTILL A SENSE OF GRATITUDE + GENEROSITY. When kids help others in need, it helps them be grateful for what they do have. They key however, is not to force good deeds down their throats. For example, instead of making them throw away last year’s toys, let them come up with their own ways to help contribute to the greater good. “The research shows that children learn to be generous by having the experience of giving to someone else or sharing with someone else and noticing how it feels,” Markham said.
9. BE A CONFIDENT PARENT. Instead of reacting to try to make your child happy when you discipline, accept their feelings and have the confidence to stick by your parenting because you know you did it to teach them an important lesson.
10. RIDE IT OUT. When you’re exhausted and stressed out, and you only have a few hours with your kids, it can be tempting to give up and give in to their bad behaviors. Yet when you’re consistent, your children will realize that you’re in charge, which will help you relax and have more fun with them. “In order to have a happy life with your children in the long run, you have to have a couple of unhappy times with them in the short run,” Glickman said.

Weighing the Options:
PUBLIC SCHOOL vs. PRIVATE EDUCATION Weighing the pros and cons of public education versus private schooling can be daunting for parents. Here are some thoughts to consider:
Public School Public schools are the most affordable option for families, as they are funded through tax dollars. This is what the majority of families choose for their children. In the 20192020 school year, 647,987 students were enrolled in Kentucky public schools over 171 districts. In general, experts agree that public schools offer a more diverse experience for students, creating more interaction with peers of different backgrounds. Public schools have a standard of certification, training and professional development. Public schools also have tightly regulated accommodations for students with special needs and different learning abilities. There’s a misconception that public schools take a “one size fits all” approach. Public school systems offer lots of opportunities for students to learn and grow. It’s essential to stay connected with your public school system so you can learn about all they offer. The bottom line: Public school is the popular choice! This affordable option provides an excellent education. Be sure to stay “in the loop” on programs your school system offers.
Private School According to the Private School Review, Kentucky has over 350 private schools that serve 66,899 students. The average tuition is $7,500, which is generally lower than the national average. The benefits of private schools include smaller class sizes, impressive educational outcomes and tailored learning. Private schools have varying requirements for their educational professionals, which can sometimes be more or less strict than public schools. Some private schools specialize in particular modes of education, sometimes tailoring their curricula to differing learning styles and needs. Many private schools are religiously-affiliated, which is a consideration for parents. Many think of private schools as stodgy institutions, churning out future college students. While they do have great post-secondary enrollment stats, students at private schools generally enjoy rich, textured student life. The bottom line: Each private school is a unique institution. It’s important to thoroughly review all of the information available about a school to help you decide if it’s the right choice for your family. In the end, deciding which option is right for your child comes down to what feels like a good fit. Each child has unique needs and what’s most important is that you work with your child and educators to foster learning.

Greek
Chicken salad let t uce wraps Prep Time: 25 minutes | Cook Time: 15 minutes
INGREDIENT S:
PREPARAT ION:
1½ pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts ½ cup plain, nonfat Greek yogurt ¼ cup light sour cream 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped small salt, to taste black pepper, to taste 1 red bell pepper, diced ¼ cup diced red onion ¼ cup slivered almonds ¼ cup sliced kalamata olives ½ cup reduced-fat Feta cheese 10 Bibb lettuce leaves
Place the chicken breasts in a pot large enough to hold them all, and fill the pot with enough water (or chicken stock) to cover the chicken by about 1-2 inches. Add two dried bay leaves, fresh parsley stems, and whole peppercorns to flavor the cooking liquid if desired, then bring to a boil over high heat. When the water comes to a boil, cover the pot with a lid and reduce the heat to low. Simmer the chicken for 10-15 minutes, or until the internal temperature of the thickest part of the breast reads 165º F. Using tongs, remove the chicken and reserve on a plate. When it is cool enough to touch, shred or dice it and set aside. Meanwhile, in a medium mixing bowl stir together the yogurt, sour cream, lemon juice, dill, salt, and pepper. Add the rest of the ingredients and the chicken and toss gently to combine. Spoon a ½ cup of chicken salad into each bibb lettuce leaf and serve two wraps per person.

The start of warmer weather means some of our favorite fruits and vegetables are coming back in season. While we're certainly excited for the delicious flavors of some of this produce, we're really thrilled about the powerful health benefits. Many red fruits and vegetables are filled with powerful antioxidants, such lycopene and anthocyanins, that may do everything from reduce your risk of macular degeneration to fighting heart disease. Watermelon, for instance, is a solid source of lycopene, which can lower LDL cholesterol.
While you're out shopping this season, reach for tasty pink and red produce. It may just help you enjoy even more warm Kentucky days! Enjoying this "watermelon pizza salad" couldn't be simpler: slice a watermelon cross-wise, then cut into slices, deseeding as you go. Top with feta, mint, lemon zest and a sprinkle of salt. Drizzle with olive oil or dunk in balsamic vinegar.

HealthMinded Munchies When you’re looking for a healthy, fresh dining option, your first thought probably wouldn’t be a pizza joint. But Mellow Mushroom proves that you can have a filling, health-conscious lunch or dinner without skimping on flavor. Salads are an obvious choice when you’re looking for something bright and light. Mellow Mushroom’s “Greens” menu is full of options that are made with fresh ingredients and hand-chopped daily. These salads will delight your senses and feed your head. We love the Enlightened Spinach Salad (fresh spinach topped with dried cherries, apples, house-made candied pecans and authentic sheep’s milk feta cheese) because it’s a tasty option that happens to be vegetarian (and they’ll gladly make it vegan for you). There are lots of great options on their menu, from their Bruschetta (diced tomatoes, basil and seasonings tossed in balsamic vinegar and olive oil. A Good Friend and a
Glass of Wine
When you sit down to a 6 flight wine tasting, it can be a little intimidating at first. We all ask ourselves the questions like, “What am I doing here, I don’t know anything about wine?” or “I have some wine knowledge so this should be fun.” The bottom line with a wine tasting is that it is just that - a “Wine Tasting” - which means you are there to taste some wines, share your thoughts, and have a lot of fun. Wine knowledge has to start somewhere and having a wine tasting is the perfect first step. We may have had a formal wine tasting at Carson’s, but what can be a fun introduction to wine is having your own wine tasting with a group of close friends. Everyone invited brings two bottles of wine, you all taste them, and then voice your opinions. Remember if you taste something in a wine, then that is what you taste; trust your palate and you will have wine knowledge in no time!
Carson’s takes employee knowledge very seriously, which is why they have 30-minute employee training sessions on food, wine, bourbon and more, every day. Carson’s believes that the more knowledge their servers have the better overall dining experience their guests have. When it comes to wine, having a server that understands varietals of wine (the actual type of grape), areas the wine is grown in, if it is 100% of one varietal (grape) or if it is a blend, will help to point the guests to the proper wine and how it pairs with the food they want to order. 136
Special thanks to Carson's Food & Drink for inviting TOPS to participate in their sommelier session.
May 2022 | TOPS in Lexington
Jordan Spence, our sommelier for the evening, had us taste wines ranging from Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and a few others. With each wine we tasted, Jordan would explain where this wine was produced, why it was dry or sweet, and what his recommendations for food pairings were. There can be quite a bit of technical knowledge about wine from processes, to aging, to how they blend grapes. The most important thing to remember in a wine tasting is what you like. Everyone’s palates are different, so take a sip of wine, think about what it tastes like, and if you like it. If you like it, then take the time to research that wine and others like it, and your wine knowledge journey has begun.

Stain, Stain, Go Away By Allyson Mattingly
Gra Sta s
You may have heard that grass stains are permanent, but with the right products, you can remove them with ease. Baking soda is non-toxic and is considered a secret weapon for removing grass stains. Mix it with hydrogen peroxide and a few drops of dish soap and let the stain soak for a few hours. Oxygenated stain removers are also a great option for treating stains, like OxiClean or Clorox if your item is white. For both products, mix with a bit of water and allow to sit for a few hours before washing as usual. Make sure the stain is completely gone before putting your item in the dryer or the heat could set the stain.
Grease Sta s
Grease stains are the most irritating type of stain there is in my opinion. Perfectly fine clothes can meet their match just by cooking a piece of bacon. Breaking down the grease is essential to removing the stain, and dish detergent does just the trick. Could it be because it’s designed to cut through grease? Apply your petroleum-based dish detergent directly to the stain and lightly rub it in, allowing it to sit for a few minutes. Wash the garment as instructed on the care label and revel in having grease-free clothes!
Blood Stains
My Mimi (a laundry wizard) taught me how to get blood stains out of clothes, so I call her pretty much any time I get any kind of stain on my clothes. For blood stains though, if they are fresh, soak the stain in cold water to try to remove as much as you can. Then, spot treat with hydrogen peroxide and throw your item into the washer and wash with cold water. Dried blood requires a bit more patience, but don’t lose hope. Pre-soak your item in cold water mixed with detergent or stain-removing product, then pre-treat with hydrogen peroxide. You may have to let it soak for a few hours depending on the severity of the stain, but after you do, wash with cold water and repeat if needed.

Coffee Stains
Removing fresh coffee stains from your clothes is fairly simple. Immediately run cold water over the stain to dilute it, and it should wash out within a couple of minutes. If that doesn’t work, use the dried coffee stain method. For a dry coffee stain, you’ll need water, liquid laundry detergent, and white vinegar if the stain is severe enough. Wet the stained area, and apply a couple of drops of laundry detergent to the garment. Gently rub it in with your fingers and let sit for about five minutes before rinsing. If the stain is still there, mix the white vinegar with powder laundry detergent to make a paste and gently rub it in with a soft-bristled tool, like a toothbrush. Let it sit for five minutes and rinse.
Water Stains Hosting a get together is great, but the sight of a water stain on your coffee table isn’t. Luckily, there are ways to remove these spots to get your coffee table looking like new again. You can use petroleum jelly, or mayonnaise if you want to deal with that, on a soft cloth and rub the mark in a circular motion. If that doesn’t completely get it, leave the product on for a few hours. This one might sound a little risky, but just tread carefully. Grab the finest steel wool from your hardware store and use it to gently rub lemon oil on the wood in the direction of the grain. Be careful to stay within the stain so you don’t damage the finish of your table!
Red W e Sta s We’ve all had it happen, the dreaded red wine stain on either our nice clothes or cream carpet. Of course, club soda is the traditional wine stain method, but if you don’t have that on hand, salt or baking soda are also good options for treating clothes. Blot the stain first to soak up any remaining wine, then sprinkle salt/baking soda onto the stain and let sit for three minutes before rinsing with water. Blot the stain until it comes out and launder as usual. Baking soda is also effective for cleaning carpet and upholstery, but vinegar is really the star in this situation. After removing excess wine, mix 2 tablespoons of white distilled vinegar with ¼ cup baking soda or salt to make a paste. Gently rub it into the carpet and wait for it to dry before vacuuming it up.

REAL WEDDING
h t i d e Mer & atrick P story by Amanda Harper photos by Jennifer Chang Photography
The foundation of Meredith and Patrick’s love goes back 60 years. Their fathers grew up together and were best friends for over six decades; they were even in each other’s weddings. While their families were always close, Meredith and Patrick didn’t really become friends until their mid-twenties. “We started dating a year after my father passed away, and we like to think my dad had something to do with it,” Meredith said.
The couple had to cancel their original wedding plans due to Covid. “The original wedding was significantly different: much bigger, and a different vibe,” the bride explained. That wasn’t in line with their goal: an intimate wedding where they could be very intentional about choosing vendors and décor. “Once we rescheduled, everything fell into place and it ended up being the wedding of our dreams.” The couple grew up in Woodford County and have purchased a home in historic Midway. “Kentucky is everything to us,” they said. They built their love of the Bluegrass State into their wedding celebration by selecting venues and vendors that represented the state and their community. The reception was held at Midway’s Holly Hill Inn. Their friends and mothers of the bridesmaids enhanced the stunning venue with personal touches, heirloom décor and fresh flowers from local flower farms. Touches of blue brought in the southern charm. “Our wedding was small and intimate, but sophisticated, with amazing food and personal touches – full of family and close friends.” The bride added, “I credit my mother for making it all happen!”

While many couples complain that they never get the chance to sit and eat on their wedding days, the Holly Hill Inn staff made sure that wasn’t the case for Meredith and Patrick. They set up a table for two just for the happy couple while guests mingled during the cocktail hour, allowing the couple to greet their guests during dinner. “We were able to experience one of the best meals we’ve never had. The team went above and beyond, so we made sure to pop in the kitchen and give them a huge thank you!”
h
Bringing their loved ones into the special day was an important detail for Meredith and Patrick. They created a memorial wall of photos for their beloved family and friends. Meredith’s brother walked her down the aisle and gave the welcome speech at the reception. In memory of her father, Meredith was delighted to book a band featuring one of her dad’s childhood friends. “It was so special because I know he would have loved it!” They loved celebrating with their family and friends, including Patrick’s mother, who sadly passed just two months after the wedding. “You would never have known how sick she was because she danced the night away and shared a loving mother/son dance with Patrick that had everyone surrounding them on the floor,” Meredith recalled. “We are so grateful to have those memories.”

Ask Abby Vaughn WHY DO E S E V E RY T HI N G CO S T S O M U C H T H ES E DAYS ? HI ABBY: I was at the gas station this week filling up and was shocked at how much gas prices have gone up. $64 to fill up my Ford Explorer! Why are prices so out of control? Can we expect more inflation?
— I NF L AT IO N IZZY HI IZ Z Y: I think it’s safe to say that many
of us are wondering the same thing. Whether it’s a trip to the gas pump or the grocery store, the impact of rising prices has surely been felt. Post-pandemic, we’ve faced excess liquidity and supply chain disruptions leading to an increase in prices. The Federal Reserve (the Fed) initially said this would be short-term, but it appears inflation will be stickier and harder to fight off. The intended goal when the Fed makes rate adjustments is to strike a balance in the economy over the long term, not to let it get
too hot or too cold. Fortunately, the Fed is acutely aware of this balancing act and hopes to raise rates so that the economy slows just enough to bring prices down without causing too much friction. It’s important as investors to not get caught on one side of the Fed’s balance beam as rate hikes (or expectations of rate hikes) can lead to both stock and bond market volatility. This is one more reason why having a welldiversified portfolio is so important. There’s always market uncertainty, especially right now with inflation pressures and geopolitical risks. Effectively navigating uncertainties is crucial to remaining steadfast when managing investments over the long term--we’re here to help you do just that. Give us a call to make sure your portfolio is on track for your goals.

Speedy Steiner #BBN
by Larry Vaught | photos courtesy UK Athletics
Abby
Steiner thought she was making the right career choice when she decided to give up soccer and concentrate on track after competing in both sports her freshman year at Kentucky. Her soccer skills initially got her to Kentucky, but her speed on the track proved to be something special. "Everything happens for a reason, and there is a plan for everything in your life. I am definitely happy with my decision. I also knew at the time I gave up soccer where my heart really was. I was definitely something I was sure of when I did it, but it has worked out better than I ever imagined at that time," the UK senior said. The Dublin, Ohio, native has become one of the nation's best sprinters. She won the 200-meter dash at the NCAA Championships the last two years. She was timed in a meet record 22.16 seconds in this year's meet. At the SEC Championships, she ran 22.09 — the fastest collegiate time ever and the second-fastest ever by an American woman. Steiner also set school records in the 300- and 60-meter dashes during the indoor season. She was named the National Women's Track Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, as well as the Southeastern Conference Women's Runner of the Year. Steiner admits she started to daydream about those kinds of numbers and championships three years ago. "I think once I really devoted myself to track, I hoped for some special results, but I really had no idea my speed on the soccer field would translate to what it is today," Steiner said. "Once I started going through training and doing full-time track, that's when I could see the bigger picture of what my times might look like." She hopes to add to that big picture at the SEC and NCAA Championships, especially after an Achilles injury derailed her 2021 spring season after her spectacular indoor season. She ran the fifth-fastest 100-meter dash in collegiate history (10.92 seconds) and the fastest 200-meter dash (22.38 seconds) with a headwind over 1.7 miles per hour in collegiate history during the Joe May Invitational at Louisiana State University in April. Even with the wind at
170
5.6 miles per hour, Steiner had the second-fastest outdoor 200 in UK history. "Last spring felt a little unfinished to me. I did not get a full outdoor season. I didn't get to end the year on my terms," Steiner said. She had been dreaming of a possible spot on the US Olympic team last summer after her 2021 indoor performance, but her injury denied her that opportunity. However, she never looked back and worked to be as prepared as she could be for her senior season. "Everything happens for a reason. This indoor season, it was a blessing to get another year of experience, and the trials you go through just make you want to be back so badly," Steiner said. She's also learned not to let her sport consume her physically or emotionally. She has learned it's important to step away from the track when she has a chance. "I try to hang out with friends, do some reading. Just do things to get my mind off races, so I am not thinking about track all the time," she said. "Even in the middle of the season, I allow myself a little mental break. Thankfully I have learned some pretty good coping mechanisms." What she won't do is slack off on her academic work. She is an academic All-American and was named the SEC Indoor Scholar-Athlete of the Year in February. She has a 3.845 grade-point average as a Kinesiology major with a psychology minor. "I definitely put in a lot of work for the grades I get. I do enjoy school and know the study habits and work habits I am forming now will only help when I go onto graduate school. I take great pride in getting those grades," Steiner said. She's not ready to decide if she will pursue a professional track career or go to graduate school. She'll make that decision when the outdoor season ends. "I am trying not to get too far ahead of myself and enjoy everything about my career now," Steiner said. •

Melanie Osborne, the artist behind the TOPS painted horse, is a self-taught artist born and raised on a farm in our neighboring Ashland, Kentucky. Her family’s farm had horses and greenhouses, drawing her into the wonderful and challenging art world from a young age. She started her professional career as a mechanical drafter while doing commission pieces on the side, but her passion still stood with her personal artwork. After leaving her job in drafting, she expanded her work to include indoor murals, floodwalls, and buildings, but realized her biggest passions were what originally drew her to art: horses, animals, and flowers.
in
i a i a a an i an i a an i an i a an a a inia a ain
Osborne says when asked about her mission behind her artwork. “As any artist, I want to appeal to peoples’ senses with my paintings to attract viewers so that they may enjoy the beauty of my work.” Melanie enjoys working with rich colors to achieve a beautiful piece, many of which we see classically presented on the Horse Mania horses. While Melanie is clearly passionate about all things art, that is a small window into her full life. Growing up on a farm where they had several greenhouses, she now enjoys tending to her own garden with a large variety of flowers she considers like fireworks on the fourth of July. Unsurprisingly, Melanie loves horses and attends the Kentucky Derby and Keeneland as much as she can to see both the horses and the beautiful landscapes. “The best part about the races is the last turn when you can hear the thunder of the horses’ hooves coming and the crowd standing and screaming. All of this makes my heart pound with excitement.”
Melanie says she is thankful for the talent God has given her, and so are we; without it, we wouldn’t have the gorgeous horse displayed in front of TOPS! More of Melanie’s art can be seen at Art House Gallery and The Artists’ Studio on LexArts HOP nights.

FABULOUS AT
&
GOING STRONG
Marie Hochstrasser was on a mission. And she wasn’t about to be stymied. A long-time artist and educator, Hochstrasser knew the value of the arts to our children and to our community, and she
knew that with an organization to support the arts, Lexington would be all the richer for it.
And so in 1972, Hochstrasser and fellow arts patrons, Faye Porter, Miriam Woolfolk, Marilyn Moosnick and Lillian Boyer pioneered the inaugural Lexington Council of the Arts. These women sparked and nurtured a concept that 50 years later would be a rich, diverse, vibrant - and necessary - component of our social ecosystem. Things got even better when, in 1985, Lexington adopted a United Arts Fund platform and began major fundraising on an annual basis to financially support the burgeoning but underfunded arts organizations that were the cornerstones of the arts in our community. Organizations like the Lexington Philharmonic, Lexington Children’s Theatre, Living Arts & Science Center and Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras had been active for many years prior. However, with an organization to fundraise on their behalf, they could do what they do best—create. Today, LexArts is your combined United Arts Fund and Lexington’s official local arts agency serving the citizens of Lexington and Central Kentucky. And today, funding for the arts remains critical. Perhaps now more than ever. Funding allows an organization to turn on its lights. Funding pays the salaries of the hundreds of Lexingtonians in our creative industries. Funding allows many school children to experience a professional arts performance for the first time, maybe the only time. Funding supports the creative efforts of artists who make Lexington a better place to live - who contribute to the livability of our beautiful city - on a daily basis. Imagine, if you can, our city without art. Just close your eyes and imagine. The arts are an invaluable element of our society. They are the lifeblood that brings a community together. They are a vehicle to help educate our youth. They engage us in conversation. They entertain. CONTINUED NEXT PAGE
All of this is possible because of you. Over the past 35-plus years, your generous commitment to the Fund for the Arts has helped LexArts raise over $35 million to support the social and cultural fabric of our community. “The attention that LexArts brings to the arts in central Kentucky is much more than any of us can do on our own,” said Allison Kaiser, executive director of the Lexington Philharmonic. “And it gives us a place and a way to come together as an arts community. The money the Lexington Philharmonic receives from LexArts Annual Campaign goes towards producing eight to ten large scale orchestral productions and helps to fund LexPhil’s educational and over $35 million to community engagement support the social programs throughout the region.
and cultural fabric
“Region-wide fundraising requires a dedicated infrastructure, and none of our individual arts organizations can do alone hat Lex rts can o collectively aiser continue .
of our community
Lexington hilharmonic is one of five eneral Operating Support Partners - those who receive substantial unrestricted funds to be used at their iscretion. ther artners inclu e Lexington Children’s Theatre, Living Arts & Science Center, Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras and Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning. These organizations have been integral elements of the arts in Lexington for decades and LexArts support over the years has been tantamount to their success. “It’s so wonderful to watch LexArts’ campaign grow from year to year, sai melia roetsch, executive director of Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras. “Just the rebranding they did a few years ago has been a great springboard to get the conversation happening.
It’s important for the community to see that the creative voices of our youth are also being heard – loud and clear.” Equally important are LexArts’ Community Arts Development grants. CAD Program Grants are made to arts and cultural organizations with a demonstrated history of providing community-focused programs with a high level of community impact. Programs may include festivals, a series of visual art exhibitions or a performing arts series that may include music, theatre, dance and spoken word. And while these CAD funds are not intended to be unrestricted, that says nothing of the artistic process. According to a recent grant recipient, LexArts funding gives an organization an “unrestricted ability to be creative and expressive.” Through a very transparent and bureaucratic vetting process, each grant application is subjected to a rigorous assessment by both a peer review panel and the LexArts Grants Committee. The grants are awarded in a tiered system and each applicant must have demonstrated success at a certain level before they are eligible to apply for a higher level of funding. An organization’s demonstrated level of success is what a panel of peer reviewers, including a professional from outside Lexington, along with the LexArts Grants Committee, considers each year as applications for the following year’s funding are examined. Resting on laurels is ill-advised and the reason is simple. Lex rts is only a ste ar of the financial resources contributed by you and nearly 1,000 other donors every year. The funds raised through the annual campaign belong to the community and LexArts is charged with awarding grants to the most deserving organizations those with great artistic impact on the greatest number of people.

“We can be optimistic because more and more wonderful arts organizations are emerging and gro ing. eople are i entifying Lexington as an artful place, here arts are part of our civic i entity, eetall sai . hese are things e’re prou of an efine ho e are as a city, county an region.
According to Lori Halligan of the Living Arts and Science Center, “The overall mission at Living Arts and Science Center is to inspire participation in the arts and sciences for all. We emphasize accessible lifelong learning for everyone, regardless of economic status, age, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, isability or religion. The generous funding we receive from LexArts allows us to focus on meeting the nee s in our community. bility to pay for a camp or class shoul never be a deterrent to participation.”
aiser sai the money the Lexington hilharmonic receives not only goes to ar s pro ucing the eight to stage pro uctions a year, but also fun s the group’s educational program, which is visible throughout the region.
Lexington Children’s Theater managing director Rachel ay sai the , they get through Lex rts helps keep costs low for programs such as Theater Explorers at area elementary schools as ell as being able to charge area schools less for theater performances.
“But none of this happens without the background infrastructure, she sai . hen you or ith not only our core members, but in the course of a year

LexArts’ support makes that possible for us.” Being able to charge less to students also has the a e benefit of intro ucing a ne generation to the arts, thereby building a future donor and patron base. “Lexington Children’s Theatre is excited to provide many young people ith their first theatre experience, said producing artistic director, Jeremy Kisling. “We are working to provide productions where young people see themselves onstage, using the arts to create empathic, intelligent, and creative human beings.” t’s not ust the beneficiaries of the fun ing that celebrate the campaign. Jeremy Bates with Bates Security and a several-years-long member of the campaign’s individual donations committee calls himself the “poster child” for the campaign and was glad to be a part of it on the fundraising end. “I learned how to play cello through public schools and
got involved in the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras as child through senior year high school,” he said. “And I ended up critical thinking skills I otherwise would not have been afforded. That would not have happened without LexArts funding of the youth orchestra.” It’s also important to introduce the campaign to new potential onors, sho ing them the benefits of supporting the arts in Lexington and central Kentucky. “My friends support the arts by attending performances, but there are better ways to support the arts across the board,” Bates said. “Individuals who would make good donors are unaware of the campaign. I’m shocked at the number of individuals who don’t give to the arts campaign, and I think that’s a big miss.” Of course, an investment in the local arts also means an investment in local business, Sweetall said. POWERED UP Thanks to LexArts and PNC, discovering the arts in Lexington is getting a lot easier! The LexArts App is a one-stop tool for locating gallery shows, theater and musical performances, public art installations, and cultural events, bringing together information from participating arts organizations and the general public. Art lovers can create a personal profile in the LexArts App and enable notifications for future events, staying in-the-know about what’s going on at their favorite organizations and venues. The app also makes it easy to discover something new and provides a place for anyone to promote their arts or cultural events. Users can easily submit an event that, once approved, will be visible to everyone on this collaborative calendar. “In building this app, our vision was to bring
together information about all the cultural amenities Lexington has to offer and ultimately provide a free comprehensive resource for Lexingtonians and visitors alike,” said Ame Sweetall,
Powered by
LexArts president and CEO. “We recognize the breadth and depth of Lexington’s cultural offerings and have designed an inclusive resource where all local arts organizations are represented.” Created just in time for Horse Mania 2022, the app’s mapping feature provides a visual guide to the sculptures. Fans of Horse Mania will have a great time locating and visiting all of this year’s fabulous creations. The integrated map will be a favored feature of public art enthusiasts as Lexington’s diverse collection of sculptures and internationally recognized murals are added to the app. Development of the LexArts App was funded by PNC Bank. A longtime LexArts collaborator, PNC has provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding over the past 35 years to the arts in Lexington. The app launch is a part of LexArts’ 50th anniversary celebration. The app is available beginning May 10 on iOS and Android devices.

Since the first Horse Mania horses appeared in 2000, the program has captured the hearts and the imaginations of Lexington residents and visitors alike. Revived in 2010, Horse Mania was scheduled to return in 2020, but was put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic. LexArts President and CEO Ame Sweetall said, “It was disappointing, but when we found out the Breeder’s Cup would be back in Lexington at the same time as LexArts 50th anniversary, it was perfect.”
More than 200 ARTISTS submitted over 400 DESIGNS for Horse Mania, which is presented by Keeneland and Maker’s Mark. The completed horses will be isplaye for the first time at a public preview event at ASHLAND, THE HENRY CLAY ESTATE, on JUNE 17-18. The horses will then be displayed throughout the city until once again being gathered at Keeneland for auction this fall. Horse Mania 2022 includes three special projects. Horse Play, underwritten by the Kloiber Foundation, allows every Fayette County school the opportunity to create its own horse or foal. In addition, the Horse Play program includes a unique internship program that allows high school students to work in the program, both in an artistic capacity and an administrative capacity. At the end of the display period, the foals will also be auctioned at Keeneland, with proceeds benefiting arts e ucation initiatives. Once again, each of Lexington’s Sister Cities will be represented by a Horse Mania horse. Artists from Kildare, Ireland, Newmarket, England, and Deauville, France have been chosen by their respective cities to design and create horses that best showcase their city. These artists will visit Lexington in June to create their horses. Due to ongoing pandemic restrictions in Japan, the horse representing Shinhidaka will be designed
and created by a local Japanese artist. All of the Sister Cities horses will be publicly displayed surrounding the ister ities ayfin ing sign in the tephens ourthouse Plaza and will be included in the auction. New this year is a collaboration with Independence Bank to support the healing efforts in communities affected by December’s deadly tornadoes in Western Kentucky. Students from Graves, Hopkins, and Warren Counties came to Lexington to work with local artists Jerielle Hanlon, Lennon Michalski and De Selby on three very special horses. These three horses were unveiled by Governor Andy Beshear at a special ceremony in the rotunda of the Kentucky State Capitol. Each horse will travel to the representative home ounties for a public display, then return to Lexington for orse ania an finally will be auctioned at Keeneland. Horse Mania, as in the past, promises to delight, inspire, and bring joy to the Bluegrass!

James LAST VanMeter BIT E: Stroganoff One of my
favorite steak meals growing up was Beef Stroganoff. It wasn’t until I started my butcher shop that I thought about it again, though. When we decided to promote different recipes, I knew this was one of the first I wanted to share. This recipe is a twist on the one I had growing up. I do not know the exact way my mother made her's, but this is a really good one – and I feel like it is worth sharing! - Rudy Leake
206
INGREDIENT S:
MET HOD:
10 oz Certified Angus Beef tenderloin cut into cubes 1/2 stick VMJ Truffe butter 1 cup sweet onion, chopped 1/2 pound gourmet mushroom blend sliced, stems removed 1 cup good quality Milk 1 cup beef broth stock 2 tsp. VMJ flour 1 tsp. Red wine vinegar 1/2 cup Sour cream 1/2 tsp. Regular Salt 1/4 black pepper
Heat up a saucepan and melt the butter. Brown the meat on all sides to desired doneness. Remove the meat from the skillet and add in the onions and mushrooms into the drippings, then cook until transparent. Add in the flour and stir well, then add in milk and whisk to avoid lumps. Add in salt and pepper, sour cream and vinegar. Blend together a third of the mix in the food processor or hand mixer. Combine the two mixtures together. Spread over your favorite egg noodles (prepared according to package instructions.) Top with additional sour cream and chives.
