Rhinoplasty
PERHAPS NO OTHER OPERATION EMBODIES THE ESSENCE OF PLASTIC SURGERY BETTER THAN RHINOPLASTY - A “NOSE JOB.”
vision rate than most other plastic surgery procedures. The best way we have found to ensure surgeon and patient are envisioning the same goals is computer imaging. Photographs of the patient are digitally modified to simulate the effect of the procedure.
Rhinoplasty is commonly performed, is impossible to hide, and is a source of great concern for both the patient and the surgeon. Our practice mainly focuses on patients seeking cosmetic improvement in the nose. However, breathing problems and deformities related to past injuries commonly accompany the desire for cosmetic enhancement.
THE NOSE SHOULD REMAIN IN BALANCE WITH THE FACE.
All our rhinoplasty procedures are performed under general anesthesia to maximize patient comfort. Most patients complain of difficulty breathing through the nose for a few days after surgery, not unlike having a cold. Nasal packing is rarely, if ever, used in our patients.
SURGEONS CONSIDER RHINOPLASTY IN COMPONENTS, AND SO SHOULD YOU. Rather than simply thinking: “my nose is too big,” start breaking that down a little. Is it too wide; is it too long; is there a hump; is the tip too round? Then start to imagine if the dominant component was corrected, would the other components all blend together in an appealing manner? For example, if you imagine a hump removed, would the tip be in proportion?
The best surgery looks like no surgery has been done and is completely natural in appearance. Ethnicity must be considered with rhinoplasty and the nose must look like it belongs on the face.
ONE YEAR IS USUALLY REQUIRED BEFORE THE SHAPE OF THE NOSE IS FINAL FOLLOWING SURGERY. So, patience is important both for the patient and surgeon. Selecting a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery is also a wise choice, especially for cosmetic rhinoplasty. Dr. David Kirn is a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon who is devoted to advanced techniques in Cosmetic Surgery of the Face, Breast, and Body. Dr. Kirn, Carey Sanders, RN, Shirley Ramsey DNP, APRN, and Tara Smith APRN offer a full spectrum of non-surgical treatments such as
Due to the subjective nature of what constitutes success in cosmetic rhinoplasty, as well as the many factors which can affect final shape and healing, rhinoplasty carries a higher re-

Recently, we asked a few of our favorite holiday decorators what trends we can expect this winter and the answers were surprisingly the same. Everyone is feeling the lingering shipping and inventory delays for gifts and decor. What and how much Christmas stock will actually make it to the shelves remains to be seen. With holiday suppliers operating between 30-40% of capacity this season, the real takeaway is - if you see it, you better buy it! blushing dres We're blushing over champagne this holiday season! Blush, mauve, pinks, champagne and gold are back and in a big way. It's time to think outside the box of your typical pink christmas tree. Try adding a sage green velvet to your blush and champagne line-up to invoke an element of cottage class.

When you want to create something that looks natural, approach your arrangements with the words "full" and "lush" as inspiration. Achieve this by using several different greens instead of just one. By doing so, it helps add in texture and movement throughout. A few of our favorite fresh foliage picks this time of year are magnolia, cedar, tree fern and pine.
Ke i Intesin Add in some unexpected pieces like fruits and vegetables (dry and/or fresh) to help create more interest and dimension. Some people enjoy adding in pieces like pomegranate, dried persimmons, tangerines, pears, and artichokes for depth. This is also a really great way to add in beautiful color!
Ke it Creiv Don’t be afraid to spray-paint leaves to help give that sparkle factor. True crafters enjoy painting leaves gold or silver for an extra bit of character for the holidays.

“Looks great! Little full, 'lotta sap." -Clk Gswol
For those who aren’t as big on those forever-greens and look forward to that natural pine smell that fills their home each year, then you love shopping for a real Christmas tree.
Meas Firs Before you even start looking for a tree, pick the spot you’ll place it. Measure across the space to find out how wide your tree can be. Then measure the height, taking into account any tree toppers you might be adding or the base you’ll place your tree in.
Knw Yo Ws What look are you hoping to achieve? Do you want a tree that is full, or one that’s a bit more rustic? Do you mind if the needles that fall are sharp, or would you prefer they be softer?
Chec f Fresness • Look for even coloring. TerraPass Blog
• Compared to others of its kind on the lot, your tree should be greener. • The trunk should be slightly sticky to the touch. • Do the “bend” test: bend a needle in half with your fingers. Firs should snap while pines should bend, but not break.
Oth Tis: • Bring along one of your heavier ornaments: you want a tree whose branches can support the weight of your decorations! • One bare spot? If you’re planning to set your tree in a corner or against a wall, you can put the bare spot to the back. You might be able to negotiate a better deal for a less than ideal tree! • While a lush, full tree is beautiful, it actually may not be ideal for those who love to fill their tree with decorations. If you pack in the pretties, pick a tree with more space between branches.
41
• Gently bounce the tree on its base: if needles on the outermost tips are falling off, move along. • Give it a sniff: fresh trees should be fragrant. • Hold a branch loosely between your thumb and forefinger, about a foot from the tip. Gently pull your hand toward you and see if any needles fall off.
RE A L T R E E S
This can be a daunting task for some, but is also so much fun! We’ve broken down a few important tips to keep in mind when searching for that perfect real tree:
jewel t ed beauty If you're someone who enjoys a saturated palette of beautiful jewel tones then this new trend might find a place in your home this holiday season. Feather your nest with warm shades of teal and amethyst along with eclectic details of peacock feathers. Make sure you add a hint of gold for that perfect shimmer.

f ev res When it comes to shopping for your family’s Christmas tree, a lot of people opt for a beautiful artificial tree. You may think this is an easy purchase, but there are actually many different types of artificial trees to choose from.
Classi PVC Tre Neeles These creates a full look. However, the rectangular ends of the needles and the material they’re made from are often not the most realistic look.
Te PE Neeles Otherwise known as polyethylene plastic needles. These molded needles have the look of a real evergreen. Trees with just PE needles tend to look more rustic and sparse.
Mixed Neeles These trees utilize classic needles to create fullness, then feature PE needles at the tips to create the most realistic look. It’s the best of both worlds!
Fc Neeles From long needles, reminiscent of a white pine tree, to feathers and beyond, there are plenty of other types of trees out there.
Tise These trees generally have the classic needle shape, but with the added fun of a glitzy metallic or colored finish.
Fib Opti These trees have fiber optic lights interspersed with needles (typically the classic type). Some offer customized lighting schemes that will dazzle.

The structure of the tree needles come in different shapes and sizes, which can cause the overall tree to have varying appearances. Knowing these characteristics will help choose the perfect tree depending on your vision!
flc ! Don’t call it a comeback: flocking is a retro tree trend that has been gaining popularity in recent years! Flocking creates the look of freshly fallen snow over the tree’s branches. This velvety coating offers a wintry look that will feel custom.

DIY: Take tips from blogger Alicia from Thrifty and Chic on how you can flock your own Christmas tree this season! A great way to save money on purchasing a flocked tree!
49
F LO C K E D T R E E S
Fair warning: flocking can be messy! While flocking can be added on aftermarket, there’s less mess – and less stress – with a tree that comes pre-flocked. Still, you will want to take extra care when packing the tree away to ensure that the flocking isn’t damaged.

PRO to KNOW
PK’s Gift Closet Amy Rowell fell in love with the art of gifting and founded PK’s Gift Closet to help others do the same, by taking the stress out of gift-giving. With over 25 years of experience in corporate gifting, hospitality and event planning, she says, “I have always had an eye for the ‘perfect gift.’ Details, quality, and overall experience, no matter what I’m putting together, are very important to me.” What’s the secret to a perfect gift? Amy says, “A great gift has nothing to do with the price or where it was purchased. It’s about thought and intention. Don’t feel the need to always gift around the ABCs: anniversaries, birthdays, Christmas. Shake it up! Plan a gift for a random time of year or after a busy time at work when people might need a boost.” On the power of personal gifts and practicing gift preparedness, Amy says, “How many times have you been on your way to an event and someone reminded you that someone’s birthday is today, and you have to quickly find something that will do in a pinch? You’re going to end up spending too much money on something that’s subpar, and there’s still wrapping and a card to think about. Gift Preparedness is thinking ahead so that when small occasions come up, you’re not stressed about adding another thing to your to-do list. When you give a thoughtful gift to someone and you see their appreciation and delight, it makes you both feel good. It makes you feel connected.”

“If you shine, I shine!”
- Amy Rowell
To be prepared for gift-giving yearround, Amy offers a quarterly subscription box that includes helpful reminders about holidays, like World Teacher’s Day and Administrative Professional’s Day. She also includes everything you need to perfectly wrap the gifts! With experience consulting clients in a variety of industries, Amy is an expert in creating memorable experiences. She says, “I work with so many different types of clients; businesses that want to do a better job connecting with employees, vacation property owners who want unique welcome gifts to enhance their guests’ stay, and companies that want to work on kindness and intention initiatives with their employees. It is so important to stay connected and intentional in a corporate setting. It’s imperative to nurture our business relationships, be it employees, co-workers, sponsors, vendors or service technicians. These interactions cannot be viewed as just transactional.” When most of us think about corporate gifting, we think about something like a mug with a logo on it. Amy explains why these kinds of gifts are a wasted opportunity to connect with your clients; “That gift is about the giver, not the receiver. That gift is for your company because there’s your logo, front and center! But, it doesn’t create joy for the receiver.” Remembering the impact of a thoughtful gift she received, she says, “I worked with a vendor and as a thank you, he got me a very nice set of steak knives that have ‘UK’ engraved on all of them. He paid attention to a passion of mine and remembered that. I have used those knives every day for the past 15 years… so I’m always thinking of him and remembering that thoughtfulness. We still have a business connection to this day!”

IDEA HOUSE 2021
Color Story
T
here are some tricks and tips that interior designers employ to make a house feel like a home. One tool in their arsenal is the the color story.
In home design, a color story refers to the way the palette of colors is threaded throughout the house’s décor to create a cohesive feel. When walking from one room to the next, each space is defined and unique, yet feels like it belongs to a greater whole. When Southern Living began planning their 2021 Idea House, they envisioned a comfortable, welcoming place for a family. Located on a prime waterfront lot, the interior seems to hearken to the elements, with touches of blue and green woven throughout the light, bright spaces, accented by natural woods. While painting walls and cabinets is an obvious way to bring a color palette to life, consider other opportunities to tell your story. The custom flooring in the Idea House kitchen is a brilliant use of blue against the white cabinetry. In the family studio, a soft green covers the trim, cabinetry, desks and more; the wallpaper and decorative accents cleverly bring in the rest of the color story. Curious to see this color story up close? Take a tour of the Southern Living Idea House and get inspired! photos by Tim Furlong, Jr.

One of the most beneficial services that we offer are our professional organizing services. Our team finds so much value in helping people to reduce stress and create a peaceful and organized environment.
One of our favorite quotes is “Clear the Clutter Clear the Mind”. I find this to be so true and our customers who are so thankful when we have helped them to create an environment that brings them peace. With our support and guidance we can reduce clutter and help create new organizing strategies that can help people to maintain their home. When asked what is the best room to start organizing, we always say it's one of the most important parts to the process of organizing. We ask our clients what area causes the most stress for them and which ones they find the most challenging to keep organized. We start with this room so that they can see progress immediately and feel encouraged and relieved.

TOP 5 organizing pro tips
One •
If you haven't used it or thought of it in a year, let it go. We truly believe once it is out of site you won't regret it!
Two • If it doesn't bring you joy or value anymore donate it to someone who will enjoy it and put it to good use. Many people express they are holding on to things in case they might someday need it or in hopes they will fit into it someday. This is a common misconception, if it was valuable to you already would have been using it.
Three •
When belongings are organized and have their own place a home or office can feel less chaotic and more inviting. If you don’t have the time or expertise in this we always recommend obtaining a professional who can help with labeling systems and creating a more visually appealing environment.
Four • If you are planning a move it is an ideal time to declutter your home. When faced with the challenging task of moving, it is common for our customers to express their disappointment in themselves for allowing themselves to collect so many things over the years. Declutter first so that you don’t move the clutter with you and you can start fresh start.
Five •
Remind yourself that your time and peace of mind is valuable. Life can have so many other important priorities rather than making time to tidy up. When time or motivation is limited we recommend starting with a small area such as the bathroom sink or your dresser. Make a list of things you can accomplish in 20 minutes a day so that you can feel less overwhelmed. Reward yourself when you accomplish your goal for the day and use it as motivation to continue the next day.

Feed Your Pet Table Scraps and Pay the Price!
A P Administrative Supervisor and Marketing Specialist, Bluegrass Veterinary Specialists + Animal Emergency
You may be tempted to sneak your pet leftover fixings from your Thanksgiving feast, but the consequences can be serious. Many human foods, especially those we eat around the holidays, are too high in fat for our pets. When these high fat foods are fed to our canine or feline companions they can cause severe complications, including pancreatitis. Make sure your guests know that your pets are not allowed to have table scraps, too!
What is the pancreas and what does it do? The pancreas is a vital organ that lies on the right side of the abdomen. It produces enzymes that aid in the digestion of food and produces insulin.
Nausea Vomiting Fever
What is pancreatitis?
Lethargy
Pancreatitis occurs when the pancreas becomes inflamed. Enzymes that are normally released in an inactive form and activated in the small intestine are activated early. This can cause the pancreatic enzymes to begin digesting the pancreas itself and causes digestive enzymes to be released into the abdominal cavity which can result in damage to the liver, bile ducts, gall bladder and intestines. Pancreatitis is more common in dogs, but can occur in cats too. Pancreatitis can either be acute or chronic and the symptoms can range from mild to a more severe, hemorrhagic form. Diagnosis is typically achieved through blood tests, x-rays, or an ultrasound.
Abdominal Pain Diarrhea Decreased Appetite Acute Shock Severe Depression
PRO TIP:
How do you treat pancreatitis? Successful management of pancreatitis will depend on early diagnosis and prompt medical attention. Food should be withheld from the pet. Hospitalization with intravenous fluids, pain medication, anti-inflammatories and anti-nausea medication are common treatments. Be prepared for your pet to be hospitalized for several days with the gradual reintroduction of food. A long-term diet change to a low-fat diet may be necessary. Most pets that fully recover from a bout of pancreatitis do not have long term problems, but it can be fatal if left untreated. For pets that experience re-occurring or chronic episodes of pancreatitis, secondary illnesses may develop and a visit to an internal medicine specialist may be warranted.

In large part, this is because Johnson herself works with every client who retains the office, and cases are never passed around to multiple attorneys. With this model, the practice has become known for its expertise in all facets of family law, and Johnson has proven adept at helping clients navigate the nuance of the field. “Clients who hire a family law attorney and who want to obtain a divorce rarely understand that their case involves a myriad of other types of law: real estate, transactional law, division of retirement accounts, tax law and estate planning, just to name a few,” Johnson said. “My office has a solid network of individuals in other areas of law who can assist my clients if and when the need arises. legal representation of insureds while meeting the business objectives of businesses, insurance companies and their insureds,” Ashley Brown explained. “Despite the fact that we have a relatively young firm, we have a wealth of experience and breadth of knowledge. We have over 30 attorneys practicing across Central Kentucky with various specialties, making us one of the largest insurance defense firms in Kentucky. If you require legal assistance, someone in our office will be able to assist you.” And though the firm has grown to find success in numerous states, its work in the Central Kentucky region is particularly renowned. Clearly, this geography is one that has become a priority for Ward, Hocker & Thornton, as well as its individual attorneys.
“Since our founding, we have had the honor to represent businesses and their employees across Central Kentucky,” Brown explained. “We recognize that businesses are the heart of our state and the backbone of our economy. We represent everyone from retailers, drivers, farming operations, construction companies and contractors. Over the last 20 years, senior attorney Michael T. Davis has served a wide variety of clients in disputes ranging from construction defects and workplace discrimination to unsafe property conditions and catastrophic motor vehicle accidents in his civil litigation work for the practice Kopka Pinkus Dolin PC. “Civil litigation is not always civil, and from the outside can often appear to be just about money, emotions or egos,” Davis explained. “However, when practiced well, it is really about finding closure through compromise and the chances of that are always greater when the attorneys on each side work together.” Davis has a natural way of reaching these compromises and serving his clients with the utmost attention, drawing upon a dedication to the local community as he does so. He serves various local children’s charities and causes as Captain America. “For me, Lexington-Fayette County represents the perfect blend of all the diverse cultures that make the Commonwealth great,” he said. “Our Kentucky legal community is second to none, and I am particularly proud of the culture of mutual respect and ‘concierge’ service that dominates everything we strive to do as a firm.”

REAL WEDDING
I T A L L S TA RT E D A T T H E C O U N T Y FA I R .
Chelsea Douglas
It all started at the Lincoln County Fair. While they didn’t start dating until six years later, this couple’s roots are firmly planted in Kentucky soil. They dated long-distance, making many trips down the Bluegrass Parkway while he attended EKU and she went to WKU. When it came time to find the perfect place to celebrate their wedding day, Chelsea wanted an older historic home that could capture the sense of that rich Kentucky history they shared. The Denny House in Paint Lick, Kentucky accomplished all of that for them. There were so many sentimental details during their ceremony. The couple’s parents sat on church pews from a family church. The cross at the altar was handmade by the bride’s uncle. As her “something blue,” Chelsea sewed four hearts into the lining of her dress, cut from blue shirts from her father, older brother, grandfather and father-in-law. The couple flipped the traditional seating arrangements to allow families to see the bride or groom’s face, rather than their back. While she tripped going down the aisle – but fortunately did not fall – the bride still wouldn’t change a thing, especially seeing her groom’s reaction. “We waited almost two years after getting engaged to share our big day with family and friends,” Chelsea explained. “It all came together as perfectly as we imagined it would!” The overall theme that the couple wanted to accomplish for the day was traditional meets boho. Their bouquets with roses, eucalyptus, pampas grass and scabiosas offered a lush, autumnal touch, florals that were carried over into the décor of both the ceremony and reception. “With the muted colors and hints of brighter colors, it was a dream,” Chelsea said. “For the reception, it was important to us that not only would our family and friends enjoy a good meal, but also have just as great a time as we do!”

The bride – as well as many of the guests – made a wardrobe change for the reception. They danced the night away under the tent. And while the cake table did fall over before they could cut the cake, family and friends helped the couple laugh off the disaster and find joy in this incredible day. “Enjoy the little moments and don’t forget the whole reason why you are doing this. At the end of the day, you are marrying your best friend and starting your lives as man and wife – and that is what is most important,” Chelsea advises. “All the small details that you worry about? Don’t sweat it!”

warmth
Having a winter wedding can be absolutely stunning and romantic. However, there’s one hiccup you might run into: the cold weather. When planning for your crisp wedding day, try to provide items that offer warmth and comfort for you and your guests. This can come from blankets, shawls, warm snacks, drinks or even a firepit for socializing. Trust me, your guests will thank you! BY HALEY NORRIS

Yes, offering warmth for your guests is important, but you have to plan for yourself too. When shopping for your bridal look, go for a gown with sleeves or opt for a set of satin elbow length gloves for a classic look to add warmth. Or if you're feeling more luxurious, pair it with a romantic fur shawl. Either way, you can’t go wrong! TOPS in Lexington | November 2021

Renee and Barney Miller have a decidedly-Lexington love story: They met while watching a UK basketball game at Rupp Arena. And now they are owners of Barney Miller’s Inc, a third-generation electronics company operating in Central Kentucky since 1922, as well as Renee Jackson Insurance Agency, an independent firm offering a comprehensive suite of insurance solutions. Together, the two local businesses demonstrate the success that can be found through true partnership. “Owning our businesses has taught us how to play off of each other’s strengths and weaknesses,” the couple said. “Renee’s secret weapon is to take risks and benefit from the rewards. Barney’s secret weapon is to be more conservative and steady. We both have great teams at our businesses that make them dynamic companies as well.” The Millers live with their two high-school-aged sons, Brent and Bryce, and their dogs Elton John and Ziggy Marley. They’ve seen their daughters grow into thriving adults. And through it all, they remain committed to fostering growth and community in Lexington. “We are both committed to our business and our community — our businesses are involved in local charitable work. Josh and Rachel met while both attending Eastern Kentucky University on a political campaign in 2015. “While we didn’t hit it off then, the power of social media led us to reconnect in 2019. After much coercing from family and friends, we went on our first date on Wednesday, second date on Friday, and have been together every day since! “ says Rachel. Josh is a man about town, that demonstrated strong entrepreneurial talents at a young age starting in real estate which he has now grown into seven successful companies and he would add “with more to come!” He also serves as a Pregnancy Help Center Board Member and is very active with several central Kentucky chairities. With all of his hard work and success, Josh is happy to tell you that Rachel is his greatest accomplishment. Mrs. Barrett (the couple tied the knot last summer) helps Josh keep the wheels on the bus assisting with their various businesses, running a household and taking care of their fur babies. Rachel has also been a great supporter to Lexington by being a CASA volunteer.

Meanwhile, Thomas Birkman is the owner of Birkman Interiors, running a variety of residential and commercial projects at any given time. But, believe it or not, this power couple did not meet exclusively through their shared business interests or passions for fine taste. They were set up by a mutual friend, first meeting on a double date with that friend and her husband. Still, that shared passion can be credited for the longevity of their relationship. “Having so much in common with our professional goals has strengthened our relationship personally,” the couple said. “We don’t work ‘together’ technically, but our professions complement each other so naturally, that it makes for a great partnership.” The two also have a 13-year-old daughter keeping them busy, and they spend time traveling for racing events and visiting family in California. They’re both passionate about home cooking and offered some short and sweet advice for other aspiring power couples. “Most Important: Respect each other. At first, it might not seem like the most likely starting point for one of Lexington’s strongest power couples, but Bryant T. Stanley and Justin Morris, owners of Norwalk Furniture & Design, began their partnership on Instagram. “We followed each other and decided to go on a date, making a fast connection from the start,” the couple said. “Finding that we had many similar interests, the relationship developed quickly and we got married on June 20, 2020.” The couple spends the majority of their time at Norwalk, and Stanley is also dedicated to his work as a realtor at Team Pannell Real Estate, but they also find the capacity to support Lexington’s LGBTQ community, its youth and animal welfare through various organizations. Morris credits a strong passion for design work and business acumen for his success, while Stanley credits his commitment to making everyone feel valued and his dedication to relationships. “A strategic balance of teamwork, dedication, willingness to go the extra mile and the commitment to find the ‘good’ in any given situation are what have allowed our relationship to drive so much success,” they said. norwalkfurniture.com

If you had asked Suzanne and Chris Powell early in their relationship if they could imagine working side by side one day, they may have been skeptical. But their shared goal of helping people and making a difference in the world, coupled with an exceptional ability to tune into one another, gave them confidence to join forces in business. This power couple utilizes Suzanne’s experience as a financial advisor, paired with Chris’s knowledge of the insurance industry to serve their clients at Meridian Wealth Management. “Suzanne and Chris are so similar it’s uncanny,” said a friend. “Suzanne feels like she’s known Chris for her whole life — even though it’s only been three years.” They often say they are two apples that fell from the same tree, even though they have completely different childhoods and took different paths in life. In addition to serving as Meridian’s VP of Investments, Suzanne is the board chair for Arbor Youth Services, the treasurer for the Alpha Epsilon Phi Foundation and the mother of two. Meanwhile, Chris is the father of four and is busy assisting in the opening of Meridian’s newest office in The Villages, Florida. Though they may not have recognized it when they first met, the two have clearly grown into a formidable power couple. meridianwealthllc.com arborky.org

“Our relationship started when we met in the hallway of the music building at school. Music brought us together, and we’ve been making music together ever since,” recalled Danielle Warren, a singer, piano and voice instructor, and lifestyle vlogger, when thinking back to how she met her husband, musician and singer-songwriter Bo Warren. This up-and-coming duo in the Lexington music scene has been creating, teaching, and performing music together for almost 2 decades. In addition to being deeply invested in raising their two girls together and serving as members of Immanuel Baptist Church, they are also committed to building their individual careers, Danielle through her YouTube Channel, private music studio, and Mary Kay business, and Bo through his songwriting, recording, and performing career. Not only can you experience this couple’s music at live venues around town, but you can also stream it on Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, and YouTube. So, how do they do it all? Well, the secret is that they don’t.

Across a wide range of businesses and initiatives — including My Autism Tribe, WLEX TV, Cameron Mills Ministries, Filthy Rags Media and LHC Group — Cameron and Susan Mills are a power couple that’s hard to miss in the Lexington area. The pair was introduced by mutual friends in early 2019, and their relationship grew into a wedding date in 2020. “We don’t have to share all of the same dreams and goals, but it’s fun supporting each other’s,” Susan said. “We have a strong commitment to our church, juggle multiple roles within our jobs and nonprofits and have a blast raising my eight-year-old son, Alex.” “We both make a conscious effort to focus on prayer, prioritizing, humility and simply not doing it all,” Cameron added. Outside of work, the Mills can be considered a power couple in their patronage and support for the arts as well. Gretchen and Alex Kinchen met at Georgetown College in October 1992, began dating in the spring of 1993 and have been married since June 1994. And it may be surprising to learn what committed ventures have been built on such a consolidated timeline. Gretchen now owns and operates Dental Care By Gretchen Kinchen, a practice trusted to provide both general and cosmetic dentistry, and Alex is the Lead Pastor at The Gathering Place, a new church in Lexington where everyone has a seat at the table. “We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses and have learned how to accentuate the strengths and compensate for the weaknesses,” the power couple said. “Priorities must be intentionally pursued. We have guarded time each week to make sure we take time to date — even after over 27 years of marriage!” The two hold each other to high standards, encourage and push one another and both believe in a partnership that receives 100% effort from each participant. Citing prioritization and time management as the secrets to their success, Patrick and April Parker embody the term “power couple” through business, family and communityoriented action. Patrick is the CEO of Thoroughbred Solutions, a custom app, website and marketing content business, as well as the leader of multiple venture-backed tech companies. And April is the founder of Project Special Spaces, a charity that gives away designer bedrooms to kids with special needs, as well as a school nurse, interior decorator and beauty guide for LimeLife by Alcone. The pair also raises three children, including one with profound cerebral palsy, who served as the inspiration for Project Special Spaces. “None of this would be possible without each other’s full support and encouragement,” the couple said. “It’s important to prioritize each other’s needs and understand that it’s okay to ask for help. Tablescape Inspiration
A question that many hosts have is whether a menu card is needed. On one hand, it's a lovely way to give your guests some context for the meal, and it's one more touch that helps anchor your overall décor aesthetic. On the other, getting them printed can be somewhat of a hassle and it's not something you can change on the fly if you menu has to change. They can also feel a little superfluous for buffet dinners or at a meal where guests will not be seated before the food is presented. Generally, menu cards are most helpful when you are serving a plated meal with multiple courses. If some of your guests have communicated important dietary preferences, a menu card that reflects their meal choice can be helpful to prevent disaster before the food comes to the table. photo by Conrhod Zonio, courtesy of Dupree Catering + Events

Don't feel beholden to a particular holiday color scheme. An unexpected palette can make your event memorable. Many hosts would keep this set of china in the hutch for the holidays, but we think that's a mistake! Thanksgiving • November 25
Advent • November 28 - December 24
Established as a holiday in 1863, this celebration focuses on the giving of thanks and prayer for the bounty of the harvest season. Many countries have thanksgiving celebrations, but American Thanksgiving is a uniquely defined tradition with turkey and pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce and gravy boats. From the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade to football, it’s a celebration all our own. On the fourth Thursday of November, we gather around a table to express our gratitude – and maybe rib our relatives about their love lives.
Advent is the Christian time of reflection and celebration of the Nativity of Christ. Many people are familiar with Advent calendars, a tradition that often included reading snippets of the story of Jesus’s birth leading up to Christmas Eve. Some churches hold hanging of the greens ceremonies, where the church is often dressed up for Christmas using evergreens, lights and other Christmas decorations.
Suggested Viewing: Home for the Holidays (1995), Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987), A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1973) Hanukkah • November 28 - December 6 The Jewish Festival of Lights is celebrated for eight nights and days. The lighting of the menorah honors the miracle of the menorah that burned for eight days during the Maccabees revolt, despite only having the oil to last for one. Observants eat foods often fried in oil, such as latkes and sufganiyot. Small gifts are exchanged each night, and children play games, such as spinning the dreidel.

For the Northern Hemisphere, that falls on December 21st or 22nd each year. This is the shortest period of daylight and the longest night of the year. Since even Neolithic times, people noticed this shift and celebrated it by welcoming light into their homes. Ever heard of a Yule log? The solstice is the night to burn it, looking forward to days slowly growing longer. Suggested Viewing: Winter’s Tale (2014), Serendipity (2001), Frozen (2013)

Christmas Eve/Day • December 24 December 25 Ho ho ho! Christmas is a festival celebrating the birth of Jesus in the Christian tradition. For many families, it’s a time to gather around a decorated evergreen tree, open gifts and celebrate togetherness. From Nativity plays to sitting on Santa’s lap, there are so many wonderful ways to celebrate this holiday. About 9 in 10 Americans celebrates Christmas in some way, so you probably won’t be able to turn a corner without feeling the Christmas spirit! Suggested Viewing: Elf (2003), Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983), It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) Kwanzaa • December 26 - January 1 First celebrated in 1966, this 6-day festival celebrates African-American culture. Each day honors one of seven principles, which include Self-Determination or Collective Work and Responsibility. The kinara bears seven candlesticks which represent those principles. Suggested Viewing: Black Candle (2008), A Rugrats Kwanzaa Special (2001), The Proud Family (Season 1, Episode 11) New Year’s Eve/Day • December 31 January 1 Honoring the end of the year is a tradition that has existed as long as people have been tracking time. Every culture has its own set of traditions and superstitions surrounding this day, but in the US, it wouldn’t be a NYE without a glittery ball being “dropped” to count down the turning of the calendar. Ingredients:
1/2 c. light brown sugar 2 T. water 2 c. halved pecans
I just clipped two articles from a current magazine. One is a diet guaranteed to drop five pounds off my body in a weekend.
- Erma Bombeck
Instructions: Melt brown sugar and water over medium high heat until bubbling. Add pecans. Stir to coat and cook for 3 minutes. If you’d like to add seasoning – such as cayenne pepper, cinnamon or pumpkin spice blend – add 1/2 tsp. while stirring. You want most of the liquid to evaporate, but avoid burning the sugar. Let air dry on parchment paper for at least an hour.
Quick Turtles Ingredients:
48 pecan halves 1 bag Kraft caramels 1 T cream 1 1/4 c. chocolate chips 1 tsp coconut oil Instructions: Arrange pecan halves in twelve x-shapes on parchment paper. These will be the feet! Unwrap the caramels and place in a microwave-safe bowl. Add cream and microwave at 50% power until melted. After 1 minute, remove the bowl and stir. If the caramel isn’t fully melted, return to the microwave at 50% power for 30 seconds. Drop a heaping tablespoon of the caramel in the center of each turtle. Allow to cool for 15 minutes. In a microwaveable bowl, add chocolate chips and coconut oil. Microwave at 50% power for 1 minute. Stir and allow to cool slightly for a minute. Continue heating at 15-second intervals until fully melted, stirring and cooling slightly between each interval. Spoon chocolate over the caramel. Use the back of the spoon to smooth the chocolate slightly. If you wish, sprinkle a little sea salt over the top. Allow to fully cool before serving.

Bourbon 1/4 ground nutmeg 1/2 tsp. salt Topping Ingredients: 3 T softened butter 1/4 c. dark brown sugar 3/4 c. pecan halves, chopped 1/2 tsp. cinnamon Instructions: Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Prick sweet potatoes with a fork. Place on a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake until tender, around 1 hour. Set aside to cool. Reduce oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9-inch square baking dish. Slice potatoes in half, lengthwise. Scoop the insides into a large bowl. Add butter, milk, syrup, Bourbon, nutmeg and salt. Use a mixer to whip the ingredients together until smooth. Spread the mixture into your baking dish. In a separate bowl, combine the softened butter, sugar, pecans, cinnamon and salt. Drop on top of the sweet potato mixture. Bake for 30 minutes. The pecans should be golden and the filling should begin to sizzle around the edges. Let stand 15 minutes before serving.

Pie Crust Ingredients: 1 1/4 c. AP flour 1/2 c. unsweetened cocoa 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 c. confectioners’ sugar 10 T cold butter 5 T ice water
Pie Crust Instructions:
Pie Filling Ingredients: 1 c. light corn syrup 3 eggs 1 c. granulated sugar 2 T butter, melted 1 tsp. vanilla extract (or Bourbon) 1 c. chopped, lightly toasted pecans 1/2 c. chocolate chips
Add 4 T of the ice water, mixing just enough to get the dough to come together, but not be sticky. If there are still dry bits at the bottom of the bowl you can’t get to work in, add the final T of water.
Whisk together dry ingredients. Cut the butter into thin pats and drop individually into the dry mixture. Use a fork to toss flour mixture over the butter pats to ensure they don’t stick together. Using your dry, clean fingers, squish the flour into the butter. You’re looking to be left with pea-sized lumps. Work quickly to ensure the butter doesn’t warm between your fingers. (If this feels yucky to you, you can use the pulse function on a food processor. I’ve always struggled somewhat to get the dough to come together with this method, personally.)
Shape the dough into a disk. Wrap with plastic wrap and place in the fridge until ready to use. This step is necessary: it will both allow the flour to hydrate completely and it will keep the butter cold. Pie Filling Instructions: Set the oven rack to the bottom shelf. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Whisk the eggs, sugar, corn syrup and vanilla (or Bourbon) with the melted butter and salt. Fold in the pecan and chocolate chips. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured work surface into an 1/8” thick round. Fit the dough into a 9-inch glass pie plate. Trim the overhang to about 1/2” and fold the edge and crimp decoratively. Pour the filling into the pie shell. Bake for about 55 minutes, until the center of the pie is set. Tent the crust halfway through the baking time to prevent overbrowning. Let cool at least 1 hour before serving. Note: if you need to stretch this recipe to make two pies, use shallow tart tins. It looks beautiful drizzled with chocolate or a thick caramel.

Bird is the Word
Did you know that there is an official Butterball® turkey help line? Their experts answer questions through the holiday season about all types of turkey troubles. Did you also know that most of their calls are from people wondering what to do with their frozen bird? (Their best tip: please DO NOT try to use a hairdryer!) The BEST way to thaw a frozen turkey is in the refrigerator, allowing 24 hours per five pounds of turkey. Round up if you’re not sure. But if you need to thaw it the day-of, fully submerge the turkey (still in its packaging) in cold water. Change the water every 30 minutes, and allow roughly 30 minutes per pound to thaw. If you’re deep frying the bird, it must be completely thawed. Putting a frozen turkey into the hot oil will cause a massive fire, full stop. Don’t do it! If you’re oven-roasting your turkey, you’ve got a little leeway. If it’s totally frozen, increase cooking time by fifty percent: if it’s partially frozen, about 25%. Just check your meat thermometer for doneness: the USDA recommends 165°F.
Pop-Up Timers Are a Lie!
What the Cluck?!
Sorry to get fresh, but picking the right turkey for your table is pretty confusing stuff. Here’s a quick and dirty guide to picking the perfect bird for you.
Frozen vs. Fresh: While frozen birds are pretty obvious, “fresh” only means that the bird is not currently frozen. If you want a turkey that has never been frozen, look for that specific labeling. Kosher: This turkey was slaughtered by a trained, Jewish butcher according to kosher laws. They’re also salted, which eliminates the need for brining. Natural: According to the USDA, this means the turkey has not had any artificial flavorings or preservatives added. This does not mean hormone-free. Organic: This turkey was fed organic feed and not treated with antibiotics, hormones or steroids. Free-Range: This is a legal definition, which requires the turkeys to be raised with “access” to the outdoors. There is wiggle room into how that is interpreted. This doesn’t necessarily mean the turkey was freely wandering the outdoors. Pastured: This is a non-regulated claim that often means the turkey was raised “free-range,” but with actual acess to grass. If this is a concern for you, it’s best to select a bird raised on a farm you’re familiar with. Self-basting or pre-brined: These have added salt, water, broth or seasonings injected into the meat. Adding this bird to a brine soak would be a waste of time. Many people describe these turkeys as spongy and flavorless. That said, if these birds were common in your family, it might also be the most familiar taste. Heritage: This turkey is a descendant of some of America’s earliest breeds. The meat has a stronger flavor - some may say it’s gamy. Heritage birds often have smaller breasts and legs compared to commercial turkeys, and are pricier.

Go ahead and pull this pop-up timer out of your bird and throw it away. The polymer that holds the spring is often designed to melt at 175°F, based on the old, outdated USDA recommendations. By the time it pops, your turkey will be overcooked. Instead, invest in a probe thermometer. Some have long wires that allow you to monitor the temperature throughout roasting so you can pull it at the exact right doneness. Avoid the fate of the Griswolds: don’t rely on that pop-up timer!

A lot of people don’t love mashed potatoes. We can sympathize: choking down Great Aunt Susie’s lumpy, sticky, flavorless spuds is no picnic. But it doesn’t have to be that way! These pointers will turn everyone gathered around your table into a mashed potato convert. 50/50 If you’re looking for the most crowd-pleasing mashed potatoes you’ve ever made, start with a compromise: a 50/50 mix of Russet and Yukon Gold potatoes. This brings fluffiness and richness while satisfying everyone’s strong preferences about which potato is the “right” one. A New Moo If flavor is the goal, plain milk won’t do. Buttermilk brings a little zing and less saturated fat to the mix. Heavy cream brings a high fat content, but a whole lot of creaminess. Going vegan? Cashew milk brings the right texture. Unsalted Butter A lot of people use cream cheese instead of butter, but it’s actually not the way to go. Cream cheese doesn’t melt as easily, forcing you to overmix your potatoes – leading to that unpleasant gluey, pasty texture that everyone hates. Besides, who doesn’t love butter? Use unsalted so guests can control their own salt level. Buy a Ricer Looking for the fluffiest mashed spuds of your life? Once the potatoes are boiled, reach for a ricer or food mill set on the smallest die. This will get your potatoes down to small, rice-like bits that are so soft, all you need to do is gently stir to get the perfect mashed potato texture. Mashers, beaters and food processors all overwork the potatoes, leading to that aforementioned glue consistency.

While bottled drinks are easy enough to manage on Thanksgiving, cocktails are a very different matter. It’s nearly impossibly to play bartender while you’re managing the million other things you have to do as host and/or chef. Leaving guests to DIY their own concoctions tends to result in everyone getting “overserved.” Rather than eating up precious turkey time measuring and mixing drinks, we suggest making a batch cocktail or two. Mix once, then serve them up in a punch bowl or pitchers for guests to enjoy. The first Thanksgiving meal probably looked very different. While no records exist of the exact menu, historians suggest that the three-day celebration probably included wild turkey, swan, geese, ducks, deer, mussels, eel, corn mush, cabbage, spinach, nuts, beans and peas.

Once the glaze becomes thick, brush it on the turkey. The turkey should have been roasting about 10 minutes by now. Let the turkey roast another 10 minutes and brush with glaze again. Roast turkey until the internal temperature reads 165°F. After removing the turkey from the oven, brush with glaze again, and tent with foil while you make the gravy. In another small saucepan, add butter. Turn the flame on medium and when butter melts, whisk in flour. Take drippings from the turkey and whisk into butter and flour. Whisk in remaining chicken stock and salt. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer until thickened, about 1-2 minutes. Cut turkey into 1/4” slices and serve with remaining glaze and gravy.
In a large pot over medium heat, heat the oil. Add onion, celery, apple and thyme. Cook until softened. Add the garlic and salt, cook until fragrant. Stir in the chardonnay and broth. Bring to a boil, then stir in wild rice. Reduce heat to medium-low, then simmer and cover. Cook for 45 minutes until the rice is tender and some kernels have burst. Stir in the quinoa and water, cook for 15 more minutes, until the quinoa is tender. Add the cranberries, pecans, and parsley. Remove from heat. Preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare a 9”x13” casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray. Scoop the stuffing mixture into the prepared pan, lightly mounding instead of mashing the mixture down. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve.
Pumpkin-Maple Dinner Rolls • 1 Tablespoon instant yeast • 1⁄4 cup maple syrup • 1⁄2 cup warm buttermilk • 6 tablespoons softened butter, divided • 2 teaspoons salt • 2 large eggs • 3 cups all-purpose flour • 3⁄4 cup mashed pumpkin Combine yeast, maple syrup, and warm buttermilk in a small bowl. Mix to dissolve the yeast and let it sit for 15 minutes until bubbly. Move to the bowl of a stand mixer and add 4 tablespoons melted butter, salt, eggs and flour. Mix on low speed 1 minute, then turn to medium and mix for 2 minutes. Turn off mixer and stir in pumpkin. Move to a floured work surface and knead for 5 minutes, or until the dough no longer sticks to the work surface. Place in a greased bowl and move to a warm spot. Cover and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size. Cut dough into 18 pieces and shape into balls. Place on a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Return to the warm space and let rise for 1 hour until the rolls are doubled in size. Preheat oven to 375°F. Brush tops of rolls with remaining melted butter and bake for 25 minutes until golden brown.

Roasted Stuffed Pumpkin with Shiitake Mushroom Gravy • 1 (3 lb.) pie pumpkin • 1 teaspoon fennel seed • 1⁄4 teaspoon dried sage • 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce • 1 cup cooked barley or farro • 1⁄2 cup celery, diced • 3 tablespoons dried cranberries • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh herbs, such as rosemary, thyme, sage and marjoram • 2 cups shiitake or button mushrooms, washed and sliced (about 5 oz.) • Salt, to taste • 4 ounces Tempeh, crumbled • 1⁄2 teaspoon smoked Spanish paprika • 1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper, divided • 4 tablespoons olive oil, divided • 1 shallot, minced, divided • 2 tablespoons red onion, minced • 1 cup carrots, diced, or variety of root vegetables, including parsnips, rutabaga, turnips or beets • 1⁄4 cup dried apples, diced • 2 cups vegetable or mushroom broth, divided • 2 tablespoons vegan margarine or coconut oil • 1 1⁄2 teaspoons cornstarch Preheat the oven to 375°F. Cut off the top of the pumpkin, set aside and scoop out the seeds. An ice cream scoop is helpful to get the interior of the pumpkin clean. Measure the capacity of the pumpkin cavity by filling it with water and then pouring that water into a liquid measuring cup. The average capacity of a three pound pumpkin is 2-2½ cups. If you are using a larger pumpkin, you can adjust the filling recipe accordingly. Rub the pumpkin inside and out with 1 tablespoon of the olive oil and season the interior liberally with salt and pepper. Place the pumpkin on a baking sheet lined with a large piece of aluminum foil.
Mix the tempeh crumbles with the fennel, paprika, sage, ¼ teaspoon black pepper, soy sauce and 1 tablespoon of the olive oil. Spread onto a small baking sheet and roast the tempeh ‘sausage’ until crispy, about 15 minutes. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a medium saucepan and sauté half of the shallot, and the onion, celery, and root vegetables until caramelized and tender. Stir in the cooked grain, dried fruits, herbs and 1 cup of the vegetable broth and simmer to heat through. Pour the mixture into the cavity of the pumpkin, place the top of the pumpkin back on, wrap the in aluminum foil around the pumpkin and roast on the baking sheet for 1-1½ hours until pumpkin is golden and tender. Allow pumpkin to rest so that the liquid is absorbed while you prepare the gravy. In a small saucepan, melt the vegan margarine and add the remaining shallot and mushrooms and sauté until mushrooms are softened. Mix remaining cup of vegetable broth with the cornstarch. Deglaze the mushrooms with the port wine and stir to release anything stuck to the pan, and then add the vegetable broth. Simmer the gravy until slightly thickened. Season with salt and pepper and serve with slices of the stuffed pumpkin. Refrigerate leftovers.

Did You Know?
Thanksgiving was finally proclaimed a holiday in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln. Before that time, every president had to determine whether it would be a holiday each year. (Thomas Jefferson was the only president who said “no thanks.”) One of the people leading the charge to make Thanksgiving an offiical holiday was Sarah Hale, who also penned the lyrics to “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” 3 in 5 Americans would rather skip thinking up something to say they’re thankful for... to be fair, it’s a lot of pressure. The day after Thanksgiving is the busiest day for plumbers. (Save yourself the bill: don’t pour fats, oils or greases down the drain!)
81%
of American prefer Thanksgiving leftovers to the meal itself. Want to make your leftovers sandwich better? Take a cue from Friends and add... THE MOISTMAKER!
About 50 million pumpkin pies are eaten each Thanksgiving.
Soak a slice of bread in leftover gravy. Place it in the center of your sandwich.

If your families are anything like ours, getting “too creative” with Thanksgiving is basically considered a sin. They want tried-and-true, un-fancy dishes, a predictable flow of events, the same interrogation routine about where your career is headed. But we all agree that “predictable” is just shorthand for “boring,” don’t we? Here are some ways to add a little zest to your celebration without causing anyone to clutch their pearls or give you the stink-eye at the table.
Bring a new guest to the party Incorporate one new ingredient to the mix this year. Selecting something seasonal is a fun excuse for getting “all fancy.” Whether it’s Andouille sausage or a seasonal fruit, work the new ingredient into a couple dishes so that the guest star feels like it’s been a part of the cast all along. The winter fruits to the right are a great place to start! Show your colors The easiest way to look fancy without doing any extra work is to select colorful ingredients. A rainbow of heirloom tomatoes in your caprese salad. Purple, white and orange carrots. A variety of breads in the stuffing. You’re an artist, so don’t limit your palette!
Pomegranate Pick one with smooth, shiny skin. Cut into the exterior, then crack it open underwater. The aerils are a great garnish.
Pomelo These large citrus fruits taste like sweet grapefruit without the bitterness. Use them anywhere you’d use another citrus!
Fancy apps Most families don’t have strong traditions when it comes to appetizers. Go all out on these little bites! From baked brie to carefully curated charcuterie, there’s so much room to experiment with your starters. Good soup! If you’ve never added a soup course to your Thanksgiving celebration, this is the year to give it a go. Depending on your spread, an Italian wedding soup, butternut squash soup or cream of mushroom might be the perfect touch. Add some drama Okay, there’s enough drama now that Tina’s loser ex-boyfriend showed up out of the blue with a dusty bottle of wine you’re pretty sure he stole from you last year. (Not to be specific.) But adding some drama of your own can be kinda fun! Make a big deal about carving the bird. Turn “tell us what you’re thankful for” into its own ceremony. Present the pies like they’re on the red carpet. Make a little commotion for the hard work you’ve done! End the night right A cup of coffee and some pumpkin pie is the official signal that the celebration is winding down. But we all have those guests that couldn’t take a cue even as subtle as standing on a chair and screeching, “Get the heck out of my house!” To get everyone out the door in a timely manner, employ this sneaky trick: leftovers. Hand everyone some Tupperware filled with clearly perishable food. If they’re not making a move, simply ask, “Need any help carrying this to the car? Looks like it’s gettin’ warm!” •

Quince Raw, quince is gritty and astringent. Once cooked, it becomes sweeter, more like an apple and pear combined.
Persimmon Certain varieties of this sweet, floral fruit are very astringent. Great in baked goods or incorporated into vegetable sides.

SHARPE

by Larry Vaught | photo courtesy Dream City Christian
About a year ago, Krysten Peek, who covers basketball for Rivals.com and Yahoo Sports, saw 6-foot-5 Shaedon Sharpe play and could not understand how his only major scholarship offers were from Purdue, Iowa and Oregon.
tling injuries much of the season. He was barely in the top 200 of his class rankings nationally after his sophomore season at Sunrise Christian in Kansas before transferring to Dream City.
“I just could not understand it,” said Peek. “He can do so many things on the court. Shaedon has great instincts on the wing in terms of cutting to the basket when he sees a teammate drive. He can fade into the corner for the 3, and he has really improved his 3-point shot. He can also get his shot off against anybody. You could just tell he was special.”
“He shoots it great. He will probably be our best shooter this year,” Dream City coach Kyle Weaver said. “His deep range is phenomenal. He shoots from NBA range and beyond. He has such a fluid shot and is so consistent. I am expecting him to shoot in the 45 percent range and up [on 3-pointers] this season.”
How special? He’s now the consensus No. 1 player in the 2022 recruiting rankings and has verbally committed to play at the University of Kentucky. If he maintains his ranking, he will be the fifth No. 1-ranked player to sign with coach John Calipari at UK, but the first since Skal Labissiere in 2015.
Grind Session director Dan Hudson watched Sharpe play as a sophomore and junior and knew it was just a matter of time before his talent was noticed nationally.
Peek remembers NBA stars LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony coming to watch Sharpe play last summer for Uplay Canada on the Nike EYBL circuit, where he averaged 21.6 points per game — the third-highest average on the summer all-star circuit — and shot 45 percent from 3-point range. “He is older than a lot of players in his class [he turns 19 in May], and I definitely think he will be a one-and-done player at Kentucky,” Peek said. “Even now, I think he might surprise a lot of people when he gets to Kentucky. He’s a late bloomer and has not had that fanfare from the very start of his high school career like some No. 1 recruits have where everyone followed everything he did.” Peek added, “He’s from Canada and is a very quiet kid. Because of COVID, he didn’t get a lot of attention last year, but he’s a great player and a great fit for Kentucky. I’ve told him he just has to get used to being under a greater microscope on and off the court, but so far, none of that has fazed him at all.” Sharpe averaged 21.4 points and six rebounds per game last year for Dream City Christian in Arizona despite bat-

“The thing you like is how efficient he is,” said Hudson. “He will get 20 or 25 points, but it is a sneaky 25 on 6-for-8 shooting and free throws. He shoots a high percentage. I think he knows he can score at any time he wants, but he chooses to pick his spots.” He continued, “It was just a matter of him getting enough playing time to show what he could do. Once he realized he could do it on a big stage, he gained more confidence. Once he figured it out this past winter, he made life miserable for everyone.” Weaver told Sharpe in November of 2020 that he could be the top player in the 2022 recruiting class. Weaver coached DeAndre Ayton – the No. 1 pick in the 2018 draft – in high school. “To be honest, I have never seen anything like this, where a kid goes from being maybe top 160 to 200 to making a move where he is No. 1, but I always knew this kid would be special,” Weaver said. “I have seen three lottery picks and other NBA guys develop. I told him I was sure he could be the No. 1 guy in his class. He thought I was crazy and something was wrong with me. He just needed confidence that he could be that guy, and now he is showing he really is that guy.” •

DORA DELGADO Executive Vice President & Chief Racing Officer, Breeders’ Cup Limited
From discussing racing plans with the Queen of England’s racing manager to creating the country’s first out-of-competition testing program for racehorses, Dora Delgado has done it all. Her career in racing has lasted nearly 40 years, yet her days are rarely monotonous. And although she has a long list of accomplishments and accolades, including recently being named a Sports Business Journal Game Changer, Delgado is most respected by her peers for her hands-on approach and propensity for tackling new challenges with ingenuity, thoughtfulness and deep expertise.

In 1982, a group of Kentucky thoroughbred breeders came together to form the Breeders’ Cup with the goal of showcasing the best international racing talent in a yearend championship. The following year, Dora Delgado accepted what she believed was a temporary job as an administrative assistant for the fledgling organization. Nearly 40 years later, Delgado continues to work for the Breeders’ Cup as Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Officer where she combines her unique institutional knowledge with her ability to think outside the box and from a unique perspective year after year.
Even the COVID-19 pandemic was a challenge in search of a solution for Delgado. While the rest of the world was in lockdown, Delgado encountered complications never before confronted by the Breeders’ Cup or the rest of the racing world. But with a cool head and decades of experience under her belt, Delgado rolled up her sleeves and got to work securing traveling logistics for over 150 horses, including many from overseas, and creating a sports health zone to keep the limited number of inperson participants as healthy and safe as possible in 2020.
Delgado’s work brings her into contact with some of the most powerful people in racing and beyond as she oversees the Breeders’ Cup racing and nomination programs, including the annual Breeders’ Cup World Championships, one of the most prestigious international thoroughbred racing events in the world. One day Delgado might be on the phone with the FBI or Homeland Security to assess threats and secure international travel for participants, and the next she might be developing Olympic-level safety protocols in conjunction with state, local and international authorities to ensure the highest standards of safety and integrity are met. Delgado has instituted extended veterinary observation periods and enhanced security measures for thoroughbred competitors, playing an integral role in expanding the Breeders’ Cup World Championships to two days of racing featuring purses and awards totaling over $31 million.
Perhaps one of Delgado’s greatest contributions to the racing industry is being a role model. In an industry that has traditionally been led by white men, Delgado reminds many young people, particularly people of color and women, that they too belong in the Sport of Kings. Delgado actively encourages diversity across all levels of the racing industry through expanded education programs, jobcredit opportunities and internship experiences. And the industry will no doubt benefit from it. So, what drives Delgado to wake up excited every day to continue her work to ensure a bright future for the Breeders’ Cup and the racing industry as a whole? The pure joy of watching her team’s efforts — and that of owners, trainers, jockeys and all involved — pay off when 14 horses are crowned World Champion each year, the celebrations begin and the hard work starts all over again. •

Bell Ringers by Kate Savage | photos courtesy Salvation Army
The Salvation Army Bell Ringers are a well established holiday tradition. Along with sprigs of holly, candy canes and eggnog, the omnipresent bell ringers are among the lasting images of the holidays. They help to change the mood and segue from Thanksgiving and the celebration of earth’s bounty with its pumpkins and pilgrims to the season of giving and sharing. The Salvation Army has a long history of social work – from thrift stores to disaster relief, providing day care and food and shelter for the homeless as well as adult rehabilitation centers. Although a religious organization, it is more widely known for its social services, and it is these efforts that their Christmas Bell Ringing fund drive supports. William Booth, who started as a pawnbroker and ended up as a minister, founded the Salvation Army in 1865 in London’s poverty-stricken East End. Although responsible for many of the traditions of social work associated with the Army, he wasn’t responsible for the Christmas Kettles. Those were the idea of Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee in San Francisco. In 1891 he was struggling to fund a Christmas dinner for the area’s poor when he remembered how a large pot was used to collect charitable donations on a wharf in Liverpool, England. “Salvation Army bell ringing does happen around the world, but it seems that the United States has a particularly strong presence,” said Major William Garrett, who along with his wife Major Heather Garrett, are the local Area Coordinators and Corps Officers. Doug Alexander, a Member of the Salvation Army Central Kentucky Services Area Advisory Board, first got involved with the Army around 1980. Apart from a couple of years when travel prevented him, he has been a volunteer in some capacity ever since and the annual Christmas Kettle Drive has been a constant for him throughout that time. “One of the real joys of bell ringing is that it is something you can share with family and friends.” Alexander said.
In the 1990’s he started organizing volunteers from his church, South Elkhorn Christian. “It’s one of the easiest and most rewarding things you can do.” Alexander begins organizing his church volunteer group in October. “We ask people to ring in one-hour increments. We pick the days we want to ring, work out a location with the Army and then the only thing to do is remind people to show up,” he said. Bell ringing volunteers in Lexington number in the hundreds. With as many as 40-50 Kettle locations throughout Fayette County, it can sometimes be hard to recruit enough people to fill the nine or ten hours of activity a day. For Alexander, the best part of bell ringing is knowing that every dollar that goes into a Kettle is going to this community. “I tell my volunteers, ‘Ring for an hour, and help others for the entire year’.” All the money raised in the Red Kettle Campaign stays in the three-county area served by the Central Kentucky Area Services Unit – Fayette, Jessamine and Scott Counties. Before Covid the Army was raising $500,000 - $600,000 a year from the Kettle Campaign and other programs like the Angel Tree. Last year they raised about $350,000. The pandemic had a major impact and the hours and number of Kettles was limited. This year however they are being cautiously optimistic and have a goal for the Christmas season effort of $200,000. For Doug Alexander, organizing a group to ring bells for the Salvation Army is one of the easiest and most rewarding things anyone can do during the Holiday Season. “It is also a ton of fun,” he said. “I tell my bell ringers every year that all you have to do is ring, smile and say Merry Christmas, even sing if you want to.” To ring bells for the Salvation Army or volunteer for any of the Army’s other programs during the holidays, call 859-252-7706. •

SAM DICK
After 34 Years Anchoring WKYT Evening News, Sam Dick Is Ready For His Next Adventures by Peter Chawaga | photos courtesy Sam Dick
Early in the morning on August 27, 2006, the phone rang at Sam Dick’s Lexington home. “I need you to come in, we think there’s been a plane crash,” the voice of Robert Thomas, WKYT’s news director, told the station anchor from the other line. When Dick arrived at the nearly-empty station shortly after, Thomas asked him to get on the air and help viewers throughout the region understand an accident that would prove to be one of the most devastating moments in Lexington history — a domestic passenger flight had crashed while attempting to take off from Blue Grass Airport, killing all 47 passengers and two of the three crew members. “There was nothing that early confirmed, and I was by myself at the start on the anchor desk,” Dick recalled of what he now considers the most important Kentucky story that he’s covered in his 44-year broadcasting career. “I knew we could not speculate as to why and who, and that became even more important as the morning went by, and the news got worse by the minute… The news was horrible. We treated it with great respect and reverence. We understood that families were receiving the worst news in a lifetime. Our news team stayed on the air, without commercial breaks, from 7 a.m. to midnight.” It was a day that underscores Dick’s decades-long commitment to bringing Lexington its most important stories — in the hardest times and the most uplifting — as he retires after 34 years anchoring the news at WKYT.
Dick started at the station in 1979 as a 23 year old and spent most of his career there, save for a five-year sojourn in New York and Florida newsrooms in the 1980s. His father, David Dick, was a CBS correspondent for nearly two decades himself, winning a National Emmy Award for his coverage of the attempted assasination of Alabama Governor George Wallace. “Those are shoes I never tried to fill, but his sense of fairness, decency, respect and the written word stayed with me,” Dick, who plans, writes and edits many of his own stories, said of his father’s influence on his own career. “I did not plan on being a news anchor. I wanted to be a storyteller like my dad. And I am proud to say, even while anchoring, I have never stopped reporting as well.” Upon his retirement at the end of the year, Dick plans to spend more time with his wife of 26 years, Noelle, and their three children. They will spend time on lakes, in the woods, and as fans at UK football and basketball games. For somebody who spent so many years helping Kentucky understand, digest and appreciate its news, retirement gives Dick the opportunity to experience the state in a new way for himself. “It will be a huge adjustment after 34 years on the late shift,” he said. “But I also think it will be a great adventure. Kentucky is a beautiful place, and even after all these years, there are parts of it I still need to experience. I am one lucky man!” •

TOPS in Lexington | November 2021
I grew up in Richmond, Kentucky, knowing since the age of 14 I would join the military after high school. I wanted to answer President Kennedy’s call of “ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.” After retiring from the military in December 2014, I once again decided to use my time and efforts to help the same Veterans I served with. I started working at the Lexington VA Health Care System in 2015, where I was enrolled and started receiving health care. Transitioning from the military to civilian world can be a daunting endeavor. The Lexington VA Health Care System made it easier for me. Soon after retiring, I came to the Lexington VA Health Administration Service with my documents in tow. The staff there quickly enrolled me, gave me my VA identification card and scheduled an appointment in Primary Care. Since my enrollment I have been seen in the Women’s Veteran clinic, Audiology, Optometry, Neurology, Mental Health, G.I. Clinic, Nutrition and Food Service and more.

Women still struggle to be seen as equals in the military, and that extends to women Veterans. An unfortunate result of that struggle is some Women Veterans do not identify as Veterans. That’s why we ask, “did you serve?”, not “are you a Veteran?” I have never had any employee involved in my care doubt my Veteran status, or assume I wasn’t the Veteran. It has been the opposite -- one staff member even once stated I was a unicorn, as female Marines are rare. The staff have taken care of my health and treated me with the utmost respect. Women Veterans health care has grown, not just at the Lexington VA, but across the entire nation. Women are the fastest growing group within the Veteran population. Lexington VA has programs geared to women in Nutrition and Food Service, Geriatrics, Podiatry, Whole Health, Audiology, Military Sexual Trauma (MST), Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Service.
amanda grace clark
As an employee in Public Affairs, I have had the opportunity to work with most departments to create awareness of various programs for Veterans. Some programs I even took part in for my own care. Being on committees and assisting with communication is vital to get Veterans involved in their own care. I have been able to be a unique voice at the Lexington VA, not just as a Public Affairs Specialist, but as a Veteran. The I Am Not Invisible campaign highlighted Women Veterans and how they can be overlooked. It was a nationwide project and Lexington VA took part. Altogether 32 women Veterans participated from the Lexington VA service area. This project shows that woman Veterans, like me, are here and we will be seen. If you are a women Veteran and are interested in receiving care at the Lexington VA, contact Jimalee Ross, (859) 233-4511 ext. 3888.

You Have 8 Seconds...
USE IT!
8 Seconds. That is the average attention span of a person (and a goldfish, in case you’re wondering). Those 8 seconds is all the time your website has to generate enough interest to gain a new customer. This is why it’s essential for companies to provide a positive online experience for their customers. A user-friendly website ensures that each visitor to your website has an easy, effortless, and pleasant experience. But what are the aspects of a website that make it more likely to generate new business? A user-friendly website involves a combination of readability, navigation, mobile-optimization, and load time — all of which enable a user to quickly and efficiently navigate the site. Readability Matters Readability is synonymous with “skim-ability.” A user should be able to quickly skim for keywords and phrases to locate useful information. ENHANCE YOUR WEBSITE’S SKIM-ABILITY: Divide paragraphs liberally to create more separation between thoughts
1 your navigation panel easy to access and clearly 2 Make organized visual elements and colors to differentiate between 3 Use sections of information sections with clear headers that accurately 4 Separate describe section content dynamic media like photos, videos, and audio clips 5 Use to engage visitors an easy-to-read web-friendly font so your 6 Choose content is legible on any device
Think Mobile-Friendly Now more than ever, users are interacting with websites through their mobile devices. In fact, Google says that 61% of users are unlikely to return to a site if they had trouble accessing it through mobile, with 40% actually leaving to visit a competitor’s site instead. In fact, Google now indexes and ranks all websites based exclusively on the mobile version. This means that having a website that is not mobile-friendly will negatively affect your search engine visibility. With all of this in mind, mobile optimization should be a requirement during your website’s design and update phases. Load Time is Key Page speed is the amount of time it takes for a website’s components to load, and it’s a giant factor in the overall user-friendly website experience. Typically, you should aim for a load speed of no more than 2 to 3 seconds. Anything beyond that can drive users away from the site — and that’s not even the worst of it. Poor load times can also have a serious negative impact on your website’s SEO. Search engines have started considering page speed as a ranking factor when indexing pages. Snail speed is not ideal if you are trying to create an appealing user experience for your visitors. Bad user experience can ultimately be crippling to your business’s website — both online and off. In fact, 57% of users say they will not recommend a business with a poorly designed mobile site. hese days, it seems like we’re pulled in a million different directions at once. That can make it all too easy to lose sight of our wellness. We play catchup with our health rather than taking a preventative, comprehensive look at our overall wellbeing, losing focus of the big picture. “I started Marshall Lifestyle Medicine to promote a new way of thinking about healthcare, explained John Marshall Mullins, MD. “I am taking an expanded approach to better promote living life optimally. My vision for the future of healthcare is one that is patient-first, efficient, preventative, life-enhancing and unbound by the old rules pertaining to health management.” Marshall Lifestyle Medicine was founded with the goal of providing comprehensive solutions to help men and women look, feel and perform their best at any age. Since its founding, Marshall Lifestyle Medicine has expanded to include two locations – in Beaumont and Hamburg – as well as The Spa at Marshall in Hamburg and M Club Fit in Beaumont and on Old Todds Road. Each experience offers services to help patients change their lifestyles for the better.
Marshall Lifestyle Medicine’s offices focus on hormone health, weight management, regenerative medicine, sexual vitality, concierge primary care and more as a part of a comprehensive care model delivered with a hospitality flair. “Conventional medicine in reactionary – waiting until you are ill, ordering countless tests, prescribing medications for every complaint and then waiting ‘til next time you are ill,” Dr. Mullins explained. “We have shown a 75% reduction in ER visits, UTC visits, hospitalizations and sick days for some patients. On top of that, we have seen patients save two times as much as they previously spent on the treatment plans.” Their hormone optimization services offer real answers for people who may present with a host of symptoms or concerns, from sluggishness, hair thinning and loss of skeletal muscle mass to mental fog or overall signs of aging. Marshall Lifestyle Medicine’s experts offer both virtual consultations and in-office appointments to best assess each patient’s unique needs, challenges and goals. Patients see such amazing results that around 90% of Marshall Lifestyle Medicine’s clients are couples!

For the last 20 years, Dr. Mullins served as the Co-founder and President of the MESA Medical Group, the largest provider of Emergency and Hospitalist Physician Services in Kentucky. He specializes in recreating the manner in which medical services are delivered by instituting efficiency measures, programs based on accountability and results, as well as unwavering customer service. “Before opening Marshall Lifestyle Medicine, I traveled around the country looking for a template for providing concierge service and comprehensive care in an upscale environment and was shocked to find that the model simply didn’t exist,” Dr. Mullins said. That realization spurred him into action, creating a wellness umbrella that addresses common concerns, even before they become a problem. “So many aspects of health care can be done better. The Marshall family of services is just getting started,” Dr. Mullins said.
O
ne of the needs Dr. Mullins saw was for a more comprehensive approach to fitness. M Club Fit answers that need with virtual training and coaching, in-person personal training and health coaching. More than simply giving you a place to exercise and a list of activities to complete each visit, M Club Fit looks beyond the workout. From health screenings to nutrition advice, they look at your lifestyle as a whole and coach you through your obstacles. All M Club Fit personal trainers carry a 4-year degree in exercise science and each carries multiple certifications demonstrating competency in creating and administering safe and effective hands-on programs to help their clients achieve their personal fitness goals. The team of health coaches helps patients stay focused, move forward, recognize hurdles and overcome them.
