LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

KEITH YARBER Hello again Dear Reader, It’s good to see you! We made it through another month. Let’s all treat ourselves to something fun and festive. TOPS will give you some unique ideas in this month’s issue. Fall is here! I always look forward to the change in weather and the beautiful colors of fall. Lots of terrific articles this month getting you set for this change in seasons. You and I would normally be planning our Keeneland outings, Breeders Cup festivities, tailgating at college football, and attending many of Kentucky’s fabulous fall festivals. Next year! One of the special features in this month’s magazine is our 50 under 50. These are Lexington’s Rising Star “Movers and Shakers” in our community, and each is making an impact in their respective fields. All photos were shot on location at a gorgeous penthouse at Lexington’s downtown City Center and at the Statesman Airbnb- formerly the law office of Henry Clay. These 50 accomplished professionals are the ones to watch as Lexington grows into an even greater city in the future. Our fall fashion shoot takes you on location at historic Lynwood in Richmond, the home of Pattie A. Clay. From Boho to Sophisticated Chic, you will love the warm colors and exciting new looks just in time to update your look for the fall season. Fashion contributor Courtney Desroschers implements transitional pieces that can easily take a gal from Summer to Fall and through multiple occasions. A mix of jewel tones, pattern play and textured fabrics. We also had fun with choosing statement-worthy accessories to coordinate. You’ll enjoy reading about the Island neighborhood home that almost got away from the new buyers. Writer Donna Ison pens, “It was love at first sight, but the house played hard to get.” TOPS EVP Jayme Jackson writes about an originally slated home to be “flipped”, but instead, it’s now a forever home. JP Barlow, and his wife Carly turned an unassuming home on Providence road into one they couldn’t let get away. And we want to welcome officially to our TOPS staff our new Editor-In-Chief Fran Elsen. Fran brings over 30 successful years in the print industry. We look forward to her ideas, energy and ideas as TOPS continues to evolve to stay fresh and engaging to our large and loyal audience base of readers. As always, thank YOU for being one of our valued readers and advertisers. It is your support that makes this magazine possible every month, and we know who’s boss! If you have any ideas, suggestions, or critiques, please email me directly at kyarber@topsmarketing. com. I would love to hear from you.

Until next month,

er

INSPIRATIONS:

Sean & Tia Edwards

Everyone is Welcome in the Fresh Bourbon World BY DONNA ISON | PHOTO BY SIR FEMI OYENIRAN

With both Sean and Tia Edwards being born and raised in Kentucky, a little bit of their blood has always run amber. Sean says, “The culture of bourbon was naturally infused in our lives for celebrations—family events, Keenland, Derby, and other unforgettable moments, just to name a few.” However, though they both loved bourbon, they felt the market was screaming for a new bourbon experience. Sean explains, “We realized the number of bourbon aficionados who were telling you ‘how to drink bourbon,’ and forcing a neat experience, when maybe your tastes were different. We wanted to create a new bourbon experience where it would not be frowned on to have a mixed drink. Tia has always loved bourbon, but her preference is bourbon in a cocktail, where I would be more apt to drink bourbon over ice.”

large families and enjoy time we are able to spend with them.” Inspired by his mother, who has “always met every challenge with a loving spirit,” Sean has long been active in the community and dedicated to making things better for Kentuckians. To this end, he is investing time on a newly established Kentucky Distillers Association group to look at diversity in the spirits industry. Tia—who credits her parents with teaching her the value of a strong work ethic and that if you always put God first, everything else will fall into place—serves on the University of Kentucky Lexington Alumni board.

“Our goal has always been to make a good product using our own recipe. It was about being authentic, and that’s what we have done.”

Though making history was not the primary goal, Fresh Bourbon has been recognized by the state of Kentucky as “the first African Americans to make Kentucky bourbon that were not slaves.” Sean states, “Breaking barriers and paving the way for others is important to us, and encouraging others to look at the industry as a viable business opportunity. With that being said, that’s just part of our story. The story will always sell the first bottle, but what’s in it will sell the second.”

And what is in each bottle is an approachable bourbon that still boasts “surprising complexity and satisfying depth.” To maintain the most fulfilling flavor, Fresh Bourbon utilizes a pre-prohibition distilling process and uses a combination of grains, corn, and specialty malted grains. Sean adds, “Our goal has always been to make a good product using our own recipe. It was about being authentic, and that’s what we have done.” Aside from the company, Sean and Tia are deeply passionate about family and community. Sean says, “We both come from

Fresh Bourbon made their official opening announcement in February, just prior to the nationwide shutdown. According to Sean, “At that time, we were securing major investments for our project and the pandemic brought those partnerships to a halt. Many of our potential investors were affected by the economic instability and could not commit. Although COVID-19 has slowed our plans, it has not stopped our progress.” Now, Fresh Bourbon is well on their way to fulfilling their mission of welcoming everyone to the bourbon world and becoming the bourbon to which Kentuckians turn to start the party. •

The Growing Role of

DIGITAL MARKETING During a Pandemic As COVID-19 spreads across our community, people everywhere are learning to cope with a new way of living. While brick-andmortar retailers were already losing favor among shoppers, stayhome orders have crippled the market. The companies that are best suited to survive in this environment are those that have already begun to pivot to digital marketing.

UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS OF DIGITAL MARKETING Before you start creating content for organic search and setting up Google Ads along with other paid media, it’s important to come up with an overall campaign strategy. Define Your KPIs Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) are metrics used to define the success of a campaign. KPIs can include anything from page views to click-through-rates (CTR), new subscribers, and more. It’s important to establish which metrics matter most to your overall business goals. Build Brand Awareness Without brand recognition, you can easily lose sales to more established competition. Consumers buy from the brands they trust, so building that trust through awareness campaigns and testimonials can help establish a strong reputation. Create Helpful Content Most people head to Google to get questions answered. Rather than create a site that reads like a catalog, create a knowledge base where people can find the information they’re looking for. Become an authority for your niche by maintaining a regular newsletter and establish your brand as a reliable resource. If you

create content that ranks highly in search engine results, you’ll be leading more people directly to your site. Get Social Building a strong social media presence is a major component of digital marketing. You don’t need to have a presence on every platform but know which networks make the most sense for your brand. Identify where your target audience is most active. In addition to posting updates on a regular basis, engage with people and work toward creating a community rather than just trying to rack up followers.

TAKING DIGITAL MARKETING TO THE NEXT LEVEL As the market shifts to online shopping it’s imperative for companies to master digital marketing. Those that don’t will be left behind, especially during times like the coronavirus pandemic. The brilliance of digital marketing is that it can be done tactfully with any budget and can measured in ways that traditional marketing can’t. At TOPS marketing group we work with clients across various industries to develop the best digital strategy for our clients. We consider ourselves an extension of your team. Stay ahead of your competition and reach out to chad@topsmarketing. com for a free digital consult and learn how we can help you achieve your business goals. BY CHAD HOWARD

INSPIRATIONS:

the ever-engaging

Anthony Smallwood BY DONNA ISON | COURTESY PHOTOS

Anthony Smallwood is a firm believer in the famous line from the film Steel Magnolias which states, “that which does not kill us makes us stronger.” He says, “It is very cliché, but has brought me through many of the challenges and misfortunes in my life. And, God knows I should be Hercules by now.” As the community engagement manager for AVOL Kentucky, whose mission is “to collaborate with communities to end HIV in the Commonwealth,” these last few months have been especially challenging. In this position, Anthony oversees volunteer coordination, event planning, and assists with donor management. In the past, each of these roles has involved close contact with the public, which Anthony relishes.

Anthony is involved with several local charities, including the Imperial Court of Kentucky. You can also find Anthony onstage as his alter ego Helena Handbasket, who he describes as “a combination of all the strengths from all the important and powerful females I have known.” Helena performs around town, both singing and lip synching, often with the proceeds benefitting charity. She also has her own comedy YouTube channel. Of her, Anthony adds, “She is a cartoon with a message to love yourself. You should talk to her… she’s always happy to talk about herself.”

Of course, the pandemic has made this extremely difficult. He explains, “My title is community engagement manager. Now tell me how are you supposed to ‘engage’ the community when you have COVID-19 restrictions. Everyone knows me as a hugger, and not being able to reach out and hug people has been hard.”

If there is another adage Anthony ascribes to, it is “looking back at my life, I’ll only regret what I never tried.” So, his advice to others would be; “equip yourself with as much knowledge as you can, and then just jump in with both feet and figure it out as you go. You will fail at some things but you won’t look back on your life and say ‘I wish I had’ or ‘maybe I could have.’”

“Equip yourself with as much knowledge as you can, and then just jump in with both feet and figure it out as you go.”

This attitude has led to deep gratitude. Anthony considers himself very fortunate to have shared his life with his husband, Dean, for 29 years. The couple has one doggie-child, Mitchell.

Despite the recent changes, Anthony finds his job incredibly fulfilling. In his own words, “The most rewarding part of going to work each day is knowing I am making a difference in the

92

lives of people who may never know who I am or what I do. But, still, I am making a difference in their lives.”

He also feels blessed to live in the Bluegrass. Anthony states, “Sometimes I drive out Paris Pike, and some of the roads off of it, and I am astounded by the natural beauty that exists in the world and it makes me so thankful that I live here. I wasn’t raised with all of that, so I’m grateful that it can be part of my life now just by taking a drive.” •

INSPIRATIONS: Getting Glamorous with

Helena Handbasket BY DONNA ISON | PHOTOS BY SIERRA BARBOUR

If one person has been able to keep their pizazz during the pandemic, it is entertainer extraordinaire, Helena Handbasket, known to her fans as the “the First Lady of rhythm, beauty, and laughter.” So, I had a socially-distanced sit down with this glamour girl.

TOPS: How have you stayed so sassy throughout COVID? HH: Honey, I was not going to let a little virus take away my va-va-voom. I never leave the house without dressing to impress and putting my face on. You never know who you’re going to run into, and you don’t want to have to duck down a grocery aisle to avoid someone ‘cause you’ve gone out looking like a mess in a mask.

TOPS: Speaking of masks, what masks should every woman own? HH: Every woman needs three masks in her wardrobe. First, just like you need a LBD, little black dress, you need a LBM— little black mask that goes anywhere and with everything. Next, you need something for your more festive occasions. I would

not be able to live with my rhinestone mask. Third, something fun or whimsical. I, personally, have one with big, old red lips on it—since I can’t show off my own.

TOPS: How would you recommend playing up the eyes, since they’re what is visible? HH: Start with a defined brow. Add some luscious lashes. And, I’m not going to judge you if you have to use falsies… and that doesn’t just apply to lashes, if you know what I mean. And, a little sparkle never hurt anybody, so don’t be afraid of a glittery eye shadow.

TOPS: How have you been keeping busy? HH: Well, you know I’ve got a sweet tooth that goes all the way to my ankles, so I’ve been baking up a storm. I’ve called bingo at a campground or two. And, I’ve performed at a couple of backyard birthday parties. But I can not wait to get back on stage and resume my drag brunches at Epping’s at Eastside, because you know how much I love a big, warm hand. Every fall, when I realize it’s time to take my summer flowers out of my window boxes that are now too “legg y” and replace them with mums, pansy’s and ornamental cabbages I am reminded that I too need some freshening up. It’s IPL time y’all. Sun spots, age spots, (I refuse to call them liver spots) those brown freckle type circles that show up from your glory days in your teens and 20’s before you actually took the time to start wearing sunscreen and adhere to the advice of never tanning your face. Yes, these little reminders come out in full force after a few days in the sun every summer reminding me that time, is literally written all over my face.

Yo󰇻 h󰈜󰇽e 󰇺󰈢 c󰇬󰈥󰈝k o󰇻t L󰇼󰈀e 󰉁󰈢󰇼󰈡ge Spa 󰇧󰇳󰈨 t󰇬󰈥i󰈦 ne󰇿 󰇧󰈡d 󰈥󰈀󰈝it󰇮󰇳󰈪 Pho󰇹󰈢󰈋󰈜󰇩ul󰈢󰇼󰇷 t󰇶e󰇧󰇺m󰈥󰇳󰇺!

I have gotten IPL treatments (Intensed Pulsed Light) for several years now often annually and it has become an acceptable part of my fall and winter routine. It normally takes a series of 3 sessions before your face is totally free of any pigment and oh my stars it’s amazing! Now, y’all know I wear heavy, 1985 news anchor makeup every day so honestly, I’m not overly concerned with how my natural skin looks (I know many of you will now audibly gasp) because, it will be hidden under a layer of foundation and foundation powder. What did make me care about the age spots, was no matter how good I was at mastering covering them up, they were creating shadows under my makeup in area’s like my upper cheeks and mustache line and the makeup was only enhancing them. This was something that concealer and even filler couldn’t fix (I thought I would never utter such words). In the harsh fluorescent lighting at the TOPS office, the age spots under my makeup look like I’ve been punched in the cheeks. IPL, needs to be done in a season when you are dedicated to wearing sunscreen everyday and you are staying out of the sun for months. You start with one treatment, I always think the laser pulses feel like the flick of a rubber band, your age spots turn dark brown and flake off after a few days to a week revealing a brighter, younger complexion. Full disclosure, my face usually looks like I have a hundred tiny chocolate chips all over it for about 3-4 days and then they fall off. Maybe book your treatment on a Friday? The treatments are performed about 4-6 weeks apart until you have completed a series of 3. Although, I have only had IPL on my face, I am friends with several gals who swear by it on their necks, decollate, and hands. This year, I am upping the ante by having the new Photofabulous laser treatment which claims to remove age spots while resurfacing the skin and tightening. So, I will ask you... Can a leopard change its spots? I think no, but luckily, I still can.

If it’s been a while since you evaluated your contraceptive options with your doctor, it may be time to jump start the conversation. There are lots of options that you may not have considered... or which may offer you more, healthwise, than your current method does. Dr. Grace Gibbs explains, “As an OB/GYN and a woman, I know that finding the best contraceptive to suit a woman’s individual circumstances is based on a multitude of factors from availability, to cost, to a personal preference. There are many types of contraceptives that are available and many have added benefits.”

“The Pill”

IUD

The most common is the Oral Contraceptive Pill (also called birth control pills). Birth control pills are considered quite effective at preventing pregnancy. If taken correctly (daily and at the same time), they will prevent pregnancy 99% of the time. However, if taken incorrectly, they may increase the chances of pregnancy as much as 9%!

One of Dr. Gibbs’s all-time favorite options are long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs), also called intrauterine devices (IUDs). IUDs do not require daily, weekly, or monthly dosing, and provide years of pregnancy protection. They are typically 99% % effective at preventing pregnancy.

Some of the added benefits of a birth control pill are that it may help to regulate your menses (period), decrease your cramping and – depending on the type of OCP – help prevent acne. Some of the downfalls to this form of contraception are weight gain and mood: some women just don’t like how it makes them feel. It can also be difficult to remember to take the pill correctly.

Mirena and Kyleena are plastic T-shaped devices that release a low dose of a progestogen hormone called levonorgestrel for up to five years. Both are FDA approved to treat heavy bleeding. The main side affect of these commonly placed IUDs is amenorrhea (no periods)... and for that reason, they’re well-liked by women! The Paragard is also T-shaped device, but it is made with copper. It does not have any hormones, and is effective for 10 years. Women who can’t take hormones or have difficulty with hormonal contraceptions do well with this IUD. One reason the IUD is a popular option? It can easily be removed during an office visit when you’re ready to conceive and your fertility is restored quickly.

Depo-Provera Depo-Provera is a shot that you receive every three months. It is also a very effective form of contraception. One of its main side effects is lack of menses. Some women experience breakthrough bleeding. This form of contraception does cause weight gain in some women. It often takes 6-12 months for your period to return after stopping it. It also causes bone loss that is irreversible after stopping it. Long term use requires a bone density exam to evaluate bone loss.

Tubal Ligation

Vasectomy

There are different types of tubal ligations (also known as “getting your tubes tied”) such as cutting, burning, tying, and placing clips or rubber bands. Fewer than one percent of women will get pregnant in the first year after a tubal for many of the non-permanent options.

A vasectomy is often performed in a Urologist’s office or a surgery center and is very quick. Many times, the patient will return home (with an ice pack) within a few hours of the procedure.

Most recently, the medical literature recommends removing the entire fallopian tube. This completely eliminates your chance of getting pregnant. You need to be 100% sure that your family status is completely decided (because there is no putting tubes back together once they are removed!)

Follow-up semen analyses are performed to ensure that there are no active sperm. Until this is confirmed, another form of contraception needs to be utilized to prevent pregnancy. Recovery from a vasectomy is far easier than recovery from a tubal ligation with lower risks of long-term complications. Reversal of a vasectomy can be difficult or sometimes impossible.

Implant Nexplanon is a small implant that goes in the arm. It is just as effective as the pill, without having to take a pill daily. One implant is effective for preventing pregnancy for three years. Abnormal or irregular bleeding is the most common complaint Dr. Gibbs hears from women. Amenorrhea is also a possible side effect of this form of contraception.

Rings, Patches and More In recent years, a number of alternate hormonal birth control options have come to market. They promise more flexibility than birth control pills. Most have a lower effectiveness rate, around 90-94%, %, which is not enough pregnancy protection for most women. Some of these options may have extra benefits for people who plan on using condoms as a backup birth control or who are exploring contraceptive options for hormonal regulation. Talk to your health care provider about the benefits and risks!

Other Procedures There are many procedures that Dr. Gibbs does not recommend specifically as contraception, but which may have the side effect of eliminating the chance of pregnancy. Endometrial ablation is a procedure that destroys the lining of the uterus. It can be helpful for women with excessive menstrual bleeding. Because the lining of the uterus will not grow back, it generally results in loss of fertility. However, pregnancy could still occur and be dangerous to your health. If this is a procedure you need, talk to your doctor about mitigating these risks. If you require a hysterectomy for any reason, such as fibroids, cancer or endometriosis, you will no longer be able to get pregnant. This is a drastic procedure that Dr. Gibbs stresses should only be considered for health reasons: there are other contraceptive options that are less disruptive to your body.

Taking Control of Your Health Take ownership of your body and your health. Share with your medical providers the things you are concerned about when it comes to preventing pregnancy, family planning or regulating your menstrual period.

Good to Know! With all these forms of contraception, it’s important to remember: they will not protect you or your partners from sexually transmitted infections. Use condoms in combination with any of the above methods to help lower your chances of getting or spreading sexually transmitted infections. Since most contraceptives are not 100% effective, condoms also serve as an important backup birth control option.

Nearly every month

of the year is designated to raise awareness of a type of cancer. Each year, we feature a group of local cancer survivors in the month of October. While this month may be better known as National Breast Cancer Awareness month, we want to shine a light on survivors of all types to help remind our readers that regular screenings are an essential health care need for everyone. Lindi Campbell Lung Cancer My Primary Care Physician saw a small shadow on a routine chest x-ray and sent me on to have a CT scan. A 1.2 cm nodule was visible in my right lung, but doctors were not initially concerned because I had never smoked. After consistent monitoring for over 2 years, the nodule continued to grow and surgery to remove it was eventually performed. When I woke up from surgery I was told the growth was cancer and the surgeon removed 2 lobes of my right lung in hopes the cancer would not return. This past May, I had a new growth removed from my left lung and it too was cancer. Biomarker testing was performed on the tissue and revealed a genetic mutation that is contributing to my recurrence.

“Don’t assume that if you have never smoked, you won’t get lung cancer. I am proof you can!”

Family and friends have been a huge support system for me on a daily basis, but I turn to my lung cancer community of survivors when I have questions about my cancer or my treatment. They are the ones who truly know and understand this journey best. I am also fortunate to live so close to a National Cancer Institute, Markey Cancer Center, where I received excellent medical care. Please help us erase the stigma of lung cancer. Anyone can get this disease and it deserves the same sympathy and respect as all other cancers.

Debbie Cornish Stage 4 Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma In 2005 and 2007, I had tumors removed from my neck. In 2011, I was sick throughout the year. I saw many doctors that diagnosed and treated me for various infections. I experienced fatigue, loss of appetite, night sweats, severe back pain and unexplained weight loss.

“Being able to spend time with people was very important to me.”

That December, I went to see Jennifer Sudduth, PA-C. She listened to my concerns and looked through all of the previous tests and scheduled me for scans that same day. We found out that the cancer had spread from my neck through my abdomen to my groin. I began receiving chemo treatments before Christmas. Fortunately, I was able to work throughout all of my treatments. Being able to spend time with people was very important for me. For anyone going through a cancer journey: be patient. It’s so important to have a good support system.

R.J. Hijalda Stage 4 Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma For over 2 months, I was having sever back pain and a bump appeared along my spine. This lead to seeing multiple doctors and initially being diagnosed with scoliosis and iliac apophysitis. About a month went on and I still wasn’t getting any better. During that time, a lump the size of a golf ball popped up, which we knew it was much more severe than originally thought. Tests and scans were done the very next day, which then lead to my admission at Kentucky Children’s Hospital for a biopsy and removal. The doctors said that if we had waited a couple days, I could’ve been paralyzed from the waist down. The two things that helped me most during that time were definitely my faith and my support system. I felt like I had a whole team behind me fighting it with me. Whether it was my family, or my classmates, or even people from around the world that had heard about me through others, my fight wasn’t just mine alone.

“My fight wasn’t just mine alone.” 104

This may sound cliché, but my advice would be to never take a day for granted, even when life seems to be getting tough. The Big Guy upstairs always has a plan, and He only gives His toughest battles to His toughest soldiers.

Buffy Lawson Breast Cancer I went in for my first-ever mammogram (well after the recommended time) and was notified that I had breast cancer shortly thereafter. Like many people, I was afraid to get those tests done. According to the doctors, my cancer was caught just in time for treatment to be possible. It is incredible the amount of hours that are spent in the cancer center, doctors offices and treatment facilities. Sterile, medical everything. I chose to keep my phone with me and played comforting music, even and especially during intimidating procedures. It made me feel calm. I can not overstate how helpful this was.

“Like many people, I was afraid to get those tests done. The fear of the unknown is not worth the price of learning too late.”

The diagnosis of cancer used to be a grave, hopeless scenario. Fortunately, due to profound breakthroughs in science, many cancers can be successfully treated if detected in time. My advice is to stay current with all recommended testing. The fear of the unknown is not worth the price of learning too late.

Stacy Searcy Breast Cancer After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women in the United States. Breast cancer survival rates have increased in recent years, thanks to proud advocates and research funding, which has resulted in advances in treatment and diagnosis of breast cancer. Earlier detection is helping lower the number of deaths associated with this cancer.

“Make sure you get your mammograms done... and trust in the Lord!”

It’s important for everyone to know what’s “normal” for their breast tissue so they can spot signs and symptoms of breast cancer. Those include lumps that feel different than nearby breast tissue, changes in size or shape of the breast, changes in skin or a newly inverted nipple. While breast cancer is most common in women, some men do experience breast cancer! That’s why it’s important to be your own advocate and know your body.

INSPIRATIONS:

Ciara LeRoy

of Pretty Strange Design

TOPS: How did Pretty Strange Design come about? Ciara: Pretty Strange Design was born from a desire to create things that occupy both a space of beauty and oddity. I subscribe to the idea that imagination doesn’t have to stay inside of our minds—it can be united with everyday life if we have the courage to create daring things, and explore weird ideas without fear of failure.

TOPS: What have been your challenges in turning your art and creativity into a career? How has it been rewarding? Ciara: It has taken me about a decade to become a full-time, consistently working artist. My twenties were characterized by a lot of hard work, multiple random jobs, emotional searching, and artistic discovery. I also had to go through a period of taking on creative work that wasn’t necessarily in my wheelhouse, but paid the bills. Looking back, I’m glad I was open to a variety of creative experiences and commissions because it helped me figure out what I didn’t like, but it also opened me up to mediums I wouldn’t have considered otherwise. Being a full-time artist is rewarding in so many ways. I feel deeply blessed to do what I love every day, make my own schedule, and have the flexibility to try out new ideas whenever I want.

“Art is a great bridge to deep conversations because art is often beautiful and captivating. There’s nothing wrong with using that beauty to draw people toward deeper things.” It is also rewarding to exist as a Black woman artist in America, and show other Black girls that art is a viable field for them to consider. Growing up, I didn’t see a lot of artists who looked like me in art museums or in textbooks. I used to prefer letting the art speak for itself and staying out of view myself, but in the past couple of years, I’ve realized it’s important for me to be visible as a Black artist—to show my brown hands and face

128

alongside of my work, so more folks who look like me feel more comfortable showing up and showing themselves proudly.

TOPS: One theme I’ve noticed in a lot of your embroidery and illustrative works is uplifting others. Why is it important to you to share those messages? Ciara: I have anxiety and depression, and spent many years battling destructive inner dialogue and feelings of inadequacy. I am also deeply empathetic and try to identify ways I can help others with the battles they’re fighting every day. I’m constantly ruminating on what it means to be alive, be human, and be feeling so many things at once. My art is a reflection of what I am thinking about, writing about, and observing in the world. My work bends toward encouragement because I am learning to be kinder to myself and I seek to pass that message on to my audience.

TOPS: How does sustainability factor into the direction of your brand? Ciara: One of my core values is sustainability. In my fiber art and fashion pieces, I almost exclusively utilize second hand, remnant, and vintage fabrics. Not only is it environmentally friendly to use items that have been cast aside, thrown away, and forgotten, but it is also a powerful metaphor for second chances and hidden potential.

TOPS: How can other creators use their art for activism? Ciara: Don’t be afraid to use your work to spark conversations about important social issues. Art is a great bridge to deep conversations because art is often beautiful and captivating. There’s nothing wrong with using that beauty to draw people toward deeper things. Make sure whatever spaces you’re in as a creative are inclusive and safe spaces for people who don’t look like you. Consider offering your skills and services to underserved and marginalized populations for free to help balance the scales of privilege in our country. •

If

the saying that “all cream rises to the top” is correct, it is truly evident when you step into The Penthouses perched atop the City Center. The lobby is first class with its amiable concierge, abundant marble furnishing and once the elevators doors open, you have the immediate sense that “I have arrived.” There are 13 penthouses and currently 6 remain available but, these are not your grandmother’s condos. These residencies have had exceptional attention to details, quality finishes and well-designed floor plans. The developers, Mr. Webb and Mr. Greer did not skimp when they personally handpicked the luxurious, yet functional finishes showcased in these modern homes floating along the Lexington skyline.

In my career, I have sold high end luxury condos across the country from Texas to Florida and back home here in Kentucky, and I would put the quality and lifestyle these Penthouses offer up against any other major cities offerings. Say it ain’t so! When it was announced that the 2020 Breeders’ Cup would be held again at Keeneland, we were ecstatic. When Lexington had the honor of hosting this worldclass equine event back in 2015, it was kicked o with fanfare all across the city. The week-long reeders’ Cup Festival brought visitors, music, food and entertainment preceding a recordsetting attendance at the track. So when it was announced that COV put a stop to spectators this year, we were more than a little de ated. Our big dreams of dainty fascinators and larger-than-life soirees were completely crushed. ut in every cloud, there is a silver lining: in the same breath, they announced that Keeneland will be hosting the reeders’ Cup in 2022 So until next time, we’ll be daydreaming about the reeders’ Cup that we missed out on and the one that’s ust around the corner...

flip

forever STORY BY JAYME JACKSON • PHOTOS BY KENI PARKS

What is your idea of Luxurious Living? Is it an oceanside Mediterranean villa? A classic horse farm with a stable so vast and clean you entertain in it? Luxurious living has many looks, but it also has many sizes. A perfect example is the newest remodel by J Parrish Homes, located in the coveted 40502. JP Barlow and his wife, Carly, are used to moving. It’s not surprising when your husband is one of the top builders and remodelers in the city: it just comes with the territory. But what is surprising is that they decided to turn JP’s latest flip into a “forever” home. When you pull up to the unassuming home on Providence Road, you are surprised by the fact that this cozy house has had… shall we say, a face lift? The original red brick has now been painted while the porch and front door are refreshed and inviting, adding instant curb appeal. It has an updated vibe, but the smaller exterior belies the wow factor that hits you when you walk through the front door. If you are a “house stalker” like me – and you know who you are – you may find yourself fascinated by the renovations and new builds that are popping up around Lexington. I have to admit that I have Googled (possibly while driving) a few addresses of the “before and after” projects of newly flipped homes. Whenever I see a J. Parrish project sign in the yard, I instantly know that this home will turn out beautifully. J. Parrish has been in business since 2001. In that time, they have established themselves as one of Lexington’s premiere builders. I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing many builders over the years. With the personal experience of building three homes myself, my interview with owner JP Barlow proved insightful.

October 2020 | TOPSinLex.com

151

One of my first questions to JP was now that we are all living in the COVID reconstruction era where home projects are backed up for months – if not years – of waitlists, back ordered products and a labor shortage… is he accepting new projects? I mean, gone are the days when asked about a plumber, electrician or pool installer and we could say, “I got a guy.” Now, it is, “how many months until you can come over and take a look at my master bath and I won’t dare share your contact information in hopes I don’t lose my spot on your waitlist to a pricier project.” But that’s not the answer I got from JP. “I take on projects that are the right fit. If you are looking for a low/high BID contractor, then J. Parrish is probably not your best answer. We want clients who want to be a part of a collaboration of designers, craftsmen and thinkers to ensure that we have the synergy to bring their household goals and dreams to fruition,” says JP. J Parrish Builders can easily be described as a relational builder. I admired JP’s passion as he told me his building philosophy: “What is central to my heart in every project is that each individual feels important, valued and a part of the home. Each craftsman, from the roofer to the electrician, is putting their stamp on a home that will last a lifetime. It truly takes a village.”

Tour of Homes

I have to admit that upon entering Providence Road, I was questioning how a family of 7 could comfortably live in a 3,741 sq. ft. home and still like each other. Once we made our way inside, I could tell that this master builder had successfully made the most of what he had. JP says, “It’s not so much the size, but the functionality of the space. We left no stone unturned in designing within this footprint.” That is evident. The house reveals a bright, open, luxurious, and inviting space that showcases impeccable attention to detail. For design detail, JP worked with Laura Jarboe, Owner and Lead Designer of Rose + Tate Interiors. “To walk into a room and have that ‘ahhh’ feeling is so important. In this case, JP and Carly did an amazing job envisioning the overall style and function of the home, so it was really fun to add final touches,” says Laura. “We couldn’t be happier with how it all came together: their home is beautiful, welcoming, and warm, just like the family who lives there.” I could not agree more. So, take a lesson from a builder who has done everything from cottages to castles; luxury is a state of mind.

Designed with a View

How did you get into the architecture business? I’m originally from Manchester, KY and grew up there throughout my childhood. I began my college career at EKU and struggled with declaring a major in the beginning. I knew I was an artist, but the big question of how I was going to make a living was stifling. A friend of mine from high school was attending college at the University of Kentucky and pursuing architecture as a career. We got together one summer afternoon and he shared and discussed some of his current projects he was working on in school. I was intrigued and wanted to learn more. So, I called him some weeks later and after we talked for a few minutes he said, “We should take a trip to see Fallinwater”, a house in Pennsylvania designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. When we arrived and I first laid my eyes on the house, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and how well it integrated itself into the landscape. It immediately changed my life and I said, I wanna do this!” What inspires you? Today, I use my interior design education equally to my architecture education. I come from both perspectives and look through a different lense than the majority, which is evident from other work I see locally. I’m extremely passionate about adaptive reuse projects (ex: Pepper distillery district), hospitality design (bars/restaurants), residential design and historic preservation. What was your vision for this bathroom? I wanted to create a fluidity with the functions in this master bath and closet to work harmoniously with one another as well as with its connection to the landscape. A generous size vanity for two, acknowledging and engaging the view of the rolling hills of the Kentucky farmland from a wall of glass was the answer. But actually, this view can be experienced anywhere from any function in the master bathroom and master closet. As Kentuckians, I feel the farmland is as much of a reflection of us as our own physcial reflection, And speaking of reflections, there are additional mirrors for dressing. “If you’re looking for something creative, interesting and unique with any project you may have, I’m your guy. This is my focus with all of my designs. I want to give my clients a new meaning in life in how they live and interact spatially as well as pushing the boundaries for a new discovery.”

The Statesman a step back in time with all the modern comforts of downtown There are so many unique ways to experience downtown Lexington. Seeing the city from its historical perspective can be anything but boring when you’re spending the night at The Statesman. Formerly owned by Henry Clay, this updated airbnb formerly served as the famous Kentuckian’s law office. Now, this 3-story, high-end apartment serves as a charming hub for vacationers (and staycationers) wanting to explore our city. Located in the heart of downtown Lexington, The Statesman is situated across the street from Limestone Hall. That puts it within easy walking distance of Rupp Arena, Henry A. Tandy Centennial Park and downtown’s many fabulous eateries and bars. In fact, it’s right upstairs from Henry Clay’s Public House! The history of the property is evident in every area. From gorgeous stained glass to rough-hewn wooden beams, there is so much character in this luxury space. But don’t think that means everything in this apartment is “historic”: the owners spared no expense updating and modernizing the space. Guests will have a comfortable and luxurious 5 star stay with plenty of modern amenities. This property was designed, staged, and managed by Kentucky Life Property Management. For anyone looking to walk through Lexington’s history without getting stuck in the past, The Statesman is the perfect accommodation. Much like Lexington itself, this airbnb is the right mix of timeless tradition and modern enjoyment. Curious about staying at The Statesman? Planting Spring Bulbs A er the year we’ve had, am very much looking forward to 2021. Robin Williams said, Spring is nature’s way of saying, et’s party ’ tend to plant and forget, so it’s a great surprise when my owers start popping up ardening is as high maintenance as you want it to be: try to make it easier for myself by grouping plants that like require similar nutrients near one another, so can fertili e by section rather than by plant. You want to plant your spring bulbs when the days are cooler, but it’s easiest to get them in the ground before the ground gets too cold. exington’s average first frost date is between October 21- 1, so go ahead and get those bulbs ready Here’s what I’ll be planting in the fall:

t’s best to refer to the care instructions provided on the plant packaging, but if you’re getting some second-hand bulbs, here are some tips:

Shade - (These need less than 4 hours of sun: morning sun is usually a great option for these plants! - leeding Hearts - rape Hyacinths

1. etermine the proper depth. f you’re not sure, a good rule of thumb is to aim for 2- times as deep as your bulb is tall. 2. oosen the soil and mix in nutrients or organic material, as needed.

Part-Sun - (4-6 hours of sun) -Assorted rises Full Sun – (These don’t necessarily need all day sun, but they do need six hours! Think of a spot that gets sunlight in the afternoon.) -Triumph arwin Tulips - lue Alliums - ink ily eek (Allium ostrowskianum) -Canna illies

160

Here’s how to do it:

. lace your bulbs point up, roots down. f you’re not sure which way is up, they CAN be planted on their sides. 4. Cover with soil and mulch, if desired. This protects the bulb through winter. Water well. YM

Can you spot the little guys?

Ghoul-geous Home Decor Decorating for holidays is at the top of my list of favorite things to do as the seasons change. Fall has always been one of my favorites! If you have littles like me, then they’re all about decorating too! But, typically their taste in decorating is a little different! My almost four year old would deck our whole house out in cobwebs and skeletons if I let him, he is Halloween obsessed! With that being said, it’s so fun to decorate with things that make your kiddos happy, too! So, here are three easy DIY decoration ideas for Halloween and fall that your kids will get to help you make!

Paper Bat Silhouettes

At Home DIY

These guys are so simple, but add a “tasteful spooky” touch (if there’s such a thing)! All you need a bat template and some black cardstock paper! Trace, cut out, and fold the silhouettes to give them some dimension. Then, hang them! Mine are literally taped to our built-in shelves!

Handprint/Footprint Crafts We made so many of these, we’ve turned ours into a banner, but there’s nothing sweeter that a hand or footprint! I’ve turned the boys’ prints into just about anything you can think of related to Halloween. Make one or all, either way they’re a neat thing to display each year as the kids grow!

Lego Paint Pumpkin This one is so easy! I poured orange and brown paint, tracted an outline of a pumpkin, and gave my oldest two Legos! He stamped the inside of the pumpkin with the legos & I cut it out to display with a little chalkboard quote.

Look at this cute little guy! Hit up your favorite craft store for an inexpensive skeleton to add the perfect spooky touch!

PRO to KNOW

Artistic Granite & Marble

Artistic Granite & Marble has carved out a place as one of the top stone fabricators in the state. In 2002, Ron Brown found himself between a rock and a hard place when he could not find the right price for countertop installation in the home he was constructing as a custom builder. So he did what any mechanical engineer with a “get it done” attitude would—fabricated the granite kitchen countertops, by hand, in the garage of the house he was building. This was the genesis of Artistic Granite & Marble, which opened its doors that next year. Now, the Nicholasville-based company provides the highest-quality granite, marble, and quartz countertops to both residential and commercial customers throughout central Kentucky. The company prides itself in being family-owned and operated. Son, Chris Brown, who serves as manager, is a chip off the old block. He holds a mechanical engineering degree from Purdue. His mother, Jane gained her civil engineering degree from the University of Kentucky, before going on to handle the bookkeeping and customer service elements of the business for 15 years before retiring. Carrie, daughter of Ron and Jane, took over Jane’s role when she retired. Chris says, “We are a family of engineers. As engineers, we’re all used to wearing a bunch of different hats by Donna Ison

each day and accommodating whatever problems are thrown our way. Our business is built on doing whatever it takes to get the job done.” Getting the job done includes helping customers choose the perfect product, fabricating it to their exact specifications, and installing it effectively and efficiently to ensure “the most hasslefree experience possible.” According to Chris, “Our mechanical engineering background is also helpful for creating designs that give our customers the exact look they are searching for, while still maintaining a structurally-safe and durable countertop.” At Artistic Granite & Marble, they embrace their team as family, as well. “We pride ourselves on employees that are with us for the long haul. Jeff Rose is our lead installer and has been with us for fifteen years. He is regularly and specifically requested by every builder that we work with, and is foundational to the quality of craftsmanship that this company is known for,” says Chris.

Bigger, Better… Boulder Over the years, the company has gained a greater and greater following, demanding a new 7,000 square foot showroom and separate on-site fabrication facility. Chris explains, “Our growth in

the past has been fueled mainly by the quality of our work in the field and by building relationships with builders in and around Lexington, not necessarily by our ‘show-stopping’ showroom. As we continue to grow, it has become evident that this is the area that needs the most improvement.” The company, which is currently set up in a 300 square foot showroom, is thrilled to be moving to the much larger space so clients can peruse the full range of their products in full length slabs. The showroom will display 72 different colors of granite, marble, quartz, quartzite, and remnant selections in a clean, quiet, and relaxing environment. Artistic Granite & Marble procures the finest granite, in a wide range of colors and textures, from all over the world. They also offer a vast variety of marble, which homeowners have long turned to for an elegant and classic touch to kitchens and baths. Due to its strength and availability in bolder colors, manufactured quartz is also a popular countertop choice. But, lately, quartzite, a natural stone characterized by solid hues and distinctive veining, has surged in popularity for both its durability and dramatic effect. In addition to allowing them a more spacious work area and improved workflow, the new fabrication area will garner an opportunity to help the environment. To “go greener,” the company will be adding a water recycling system, which will save approximately 3,000 gallons of water per day.

Thriving During COVID-19 Unlike many companies, the biggest challenge for Artistic Granite & Marble during the pandemic has been keeping up with the demand—“One of the most challenging things during COVID has been handling the extra work. With so many people stuck at home and working on home improvement projects, our volume has risen substantially this year” If you are one of the people ready for an upgrade to your home, Artistic Granite & Marble knows how to make the process as painless as possible. As explained by Chris, “So often, a customer will be living in their house during a remodel. We understand the struggle of living in a construction site, so we get it done for them, whatever it takes.” And, they can do it safely, as well. All of their employees were trained on proper sanitation practices to follow in the shop and during installation. In closing, Chris offers these words of professional advice— “Remodeling your home doesn’t have to be a stressful process. Make sure to have a plan that includes the scope of work, a realistic budget, as well as a timeframe. Living through the remodel is never fun, but the end point makes that discomfort worth it.” Artistic Granite & Marble’s new location will be opening in December of 2020 at 105 Means Drive in Nicholasville (behind Kohl’s).

Upon stepping into this home at the Island neighborhood, you immediately understand why its current owners were willing to use a unique buying strategy to get it. On two separate occasions, they made offers, which were rejected. When the property went off the market and was offered “for sale by owner” months later, they realized they had another shot to purchase the house of their dreams – a home that was distinctive. The homeowner explains, “I used to go look at homes with my parents as a youngster on Sunday afternoons and fondly remember one that was so unusual and different from all the other homes we toured. And, I always thought to myself, ‘Someday I will have a house like this.’ I have always wanted to have a home different than everyone else.” This time, instead of just making a bid, they reached out with a personal letter detailing all the things they adored about the place and how they wanted to “love the home and make it a special place for their family.” It worked. According to the now-happyresidents, “The day the previous owner got my letter, he called and negotiations began.” Upon buying the home in the summer of 2018, the homeowners immediately set about remodeling to make it their own: “This was our second home to remodel and I love the process, seeing it develop, change and get a new life.”

eight heads are better than one. “One aspect I love about remodeling is getting multiple people – from the architect, designers, contractors and decorators – to look at the same space and come up with multiple different ways it could be done, then discussing those ideas with my husband and picking the one we like,” states the owner. To accomplish the remodel, which took almost two years, the couple worked with a team of some of the Bluegrass’s best, including architects Jack Stewart and Dan Everhart with Jack Stewart Architecture, as well as contractor Joey Fenwick with Fenwick and Hodges. Joey and his craftsman were involved from the start to the finish and created the floor to ceiling stone fireplace that serves as the focal point for the great room. The landscaping was in the hands of Marty Maddux with Glynn Young’s Nursery. Debra Hupman, with Creative Kitchen and Bath, revitalized the sleek and spacious kitchen with custom cabinetry in grey, a new pantry, stainless steel appliances, and wall-mount fans. The oversized range hood, designed by Debra, built by Joey, and faux painted by Jennifer Higgins, gives the room an artisan element. Debra also designed the master bath with its showstopping shower, complete with a variety of porcelain tile in shades of brown and a skylight with a rain head. The owners credit designer Mary Lou Yeary, of Gallery Interiors, with pulling the overall look together: “Mary Lou was a vital part of how this house turned out, she recommended painting the entire interior of the house walls and ceilings all the same color. I was unsure at first but she was right; with the openness of the house, it makes the inside feel warm, accentuates our furnishings, and highlights the water.”

According to the homeowners, “The biggest change we wanted to make to the house was making the view of the lake the first thing you saw upon entering. So, we raised the entry way to the same level as the main level, removed a back exterior wall, and added a sixteen-foot sliding glass door making the lake view the first thing everyone sees upon entering.” In addition to the interior views, upper and lower balconies run the length of the house, providing the perfect location for both relaxing alone and entertaining large groups. The owner says, “I have several favorite spots in this house; the back porch in the mornings and evenings with a good beverage, the kitchen cooking and eating while enjoying the lake, the large windows in every room of the house showcasing the lake, and the lake itself. This house is so relaxing for us and those who visit.”

horsing around Both owners share a love of horses that is reflected in the art and accessories throughout: “My husband has collected western items over the years. And, we are both from the Midwest, and horses are an important part of our lives, so adding equine and Western accents throughout the house works well for us. I prefer to mix styles and my decorator helped me blend and place pieces to get a good balance.” To tie in with the Western collectibles, the couple chose a gorgeous live edge bar top for the den: “We went to Branch and Bark Urban Sawmill and found this new freshlyplaned piece of unfinished ambrosia maple.” The result is a conversation piece that juxtaposes a gorgeous slice of nature with sophisticated maple cabinetry and a glossy ceramic tile backsplash, also designed by Debra. This is just another example of the how this home epitomizes balance and bringing eclectic elements together to achieve an amazing aesthetic that reflects the owner’s personalities. The renovated home is still the house of their dreams: “I still pinch myself on a regular basis and can’t believe this is our home. It is like we are on vacation all the time.”

Pets AT HOME

Pets

Age old

FRIENDS story by jean gibowski, cvpm brighton animal clinic

A friend and I were talking about her old dog one day and I asked if she had done any bloodwork recently. Her reply was no, because she didn’t want to know if something was wrong. Her reply has stuck with me. We love our pets and their only real fault is that they don’t live long enough. As our pets age, they need to see the veterinarian more often, and yet studies show that most dogs and cats do not see the vet at all during the last 18 months of life. Just like us, our older dogs and cats will suffer from age related illness and pains. Cats are especially good at hiding illness and by the time they start showing symptoms, most of the time it is too late to do anything about it.

meet mr. wilson

I know that facing the fact that our pets are growing older is very hard on us, but if we can detect things like arthritis, kidney disease, dental disease, diabetes, and heart disease early, we can not only prolong our pet’s lives, but make their last years very comfortable for them. Our dogs are typically considered seniors by eight years old (cats are seniors at 11 years old). At this time you may notice that your pets sleep more, walks need to be shortened, stairs are more difficult, eating habits may change or they may ask to go out more often or even have an occasional accident. Your vet will want to bloodwork to check liver and kidney values and to look for early diabetes. If we can catch some of these things early we may be able to change your pet’s diet, add in a supplement, and work with you to extend your pet’s life. There are also supplements and medicines to help with arthritis and age related mobility issues. After all, isn’t that what we all want? Our last years with our pets to the be the very best for both of us.

WOW Wedding

Few couples can say that they’ve known each other literally their entire lives. But Jack and Jordan met as infants when their parents were neighbors. They officially hung out together out of diapers in high school, and the connection was forever. As lifelong Lexingtonians, the couple was thrilled to hold their wedding at a family-owned property, Sonshine Farm. “The farm was where we first hung out together, and where we first said ‘I love you’ to one another,” Jordan explained. “We wanted something intimate and meaningful to us. I could not imagine it being anywhere else.” Jordan’s engagement ring was made with Jack’s grandmother’s diamond. She also wore her mother’s sapphire engagement ring as “something blue.” Their invitations were hand-painted. A custom portrait of the bridal party is a keepsake they’ll always treasure. Stephanie Hilen did a live painting of the ceremony, as well. “Our favorite moment from the wedding day was our first look. We were both so anxious to see one another and once we did, we were able to only feel excitement the rest of the day!” Jordan added, “We also loved taking our photos. We cherish them so much already!”

WOW Wedding Jordan didn’t plan on wearing a veil until about two minutes before she walked down the aisle. When it went on, the moment was magical. Jordan isn’t a crier, and she told everyone there was no chance of tears on her wedding day. She was wrong: “Turns out I was crying so hard during our ceremony that Jack had to read his vows before I could read mine so I could calm down!” While the couple was thrilled with their wedding day, they do wish they’d built a little time for reflection after the ceremony. “I would have liked to sit with Jack alone right after our ceremony to celebrate just the two of us for a few quiet moments,” Jordan explained. “Enjoy every moment of your special day. It goes by so quickly. Take time alone to soak it all in.” The color palette for the reception picked up on autumn colors, like orange and sage; even the salads looked like decorations! Touches of pink and clear accents further emphasized the soft, romantic décor. The head tables were handmade, and the couple plans to use them in their future home. For the late-night crowd, the Drake’s “on the road” truck pulled up to give the Drakes and their guests plenty of fuel to dance beneath the beautiful October sky.

Revitalizing

a beloved local restaurant

BY MEGAN MARTIN

After closing “for good” at the start of the pandemic in March, Alfalfa opened under new ownership this summer. Wali El-Amin and Tiffany Bellfield El-Amin know the restaurant – which originally opened in 1973 – holds a special place in the hearts of many patrons, themselves included. In fact, one of their first dates was at Alfalfa. The pair are no strangers to the food industry. Wali owns a food truck while Tiffany is co-owner of Ballew Estates, an agribusiness that she named after her grandmother. Their experiences in the business and in the Lexington community have shaped the revitalization of Alfalfa. Providing healthy, Kentucky proud food at an affordable price is at the heart of their mission. The husband-wife duo added a shop inside the eatery where customers can shop for fresh farm goods and speciality teas. With a health care background, Tiffany says, “I realized I could continue to make an impact if I began educating people about clean eating and sustainable ways to grow food and eat.” Those goals reflect some of the early ideals that Alfalfa Restaurant embodied. Community, local-first and farmto-table food were all concepts at the heart of its founding. The couple aims to reinfuse that ethos into everything they do at Alfalfa. “Partnering and networking with the representation of all that is Kentucky still stands as the base of our mission,” Wali says. “We are showing people that with hard work, communication, and humbleness we can work together to ensure the safety, health and wellness of our communities.” Classic favorites with a new spin and Appalachian Southern-style food grace the menu alongside revolving seasonal specials. They are working to feed new moms, partnering with black farmers, and making sure every part of their business and the food they serve is Kentucky Proud. “Using resources and networks from all areas of our life that involve Kentucky’s local food system helps support our infrastructure as Alfalfa Restaurant,” Wali explains. In response to current capacity restrictions, they have also expanded their outdoor seating. But COVID hasn’t diminished the dining experience at all. “We expect to have live shows every other Saturday if not every Saturday evening,” they say. “We are also hoping to have some socially distanced excitement as the holidays roll around!”

Tiffany’s Favorite Dishes: Gluten-free French toast and breakfast sandwich with turkey, bacon and fried egg Wali’s Favorite Dishes: Twisted T’s Red Beans and Rice – their version of the classic Red Beans and Rice – and the Fish and Chips We’re Craving This Starter: Loaded Nachos: Jackfruit topped with vegan cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion. Garnished with cilantro, jalapeños and sour cream. Served with tortilla chips. Chicken available upon request! Fall Flavors: “We will use apples and cinnamon a lot,” Wali says. “We love all the local squash ideas for that fall season, too!” Friendly for Every Belly: Multiple gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options Did you know? In 1973, a group of young students pooled $2,000 to start a restaurant in an old luncheonette called Pax, not far from the University of Kentucky. As a creative and hard working group, they served delicious and nutritious food in a warm, comfortable atmosphere... which quickly made Alfalfa a community hub. •

nolan hickman this uk commit is full of surprises... BY LARRY VAUGHT COURTESY PHOTOS

W

hat are the odds of having a Little League football team that would not only have an eventual University of Kentucky basketball player, but also a Duke basketball player?

Yet that’s exactly what a former Seattle team – which included UK commit Nolan Hickman Jr., a point guard, and Duke commit Paolo Banchero, a forward – had. “Nolan started out at quarterback and then moved to receiver and Paolo was the quarterback,” said Nolan Hickman Sr. “They played two years together. Their team made the national football championship before losing.” Hickman also was a track standout in the 100- and 200-meter dashes as a youngster and a successful swimmer as he did not just focus on basketball. “He was kind of bummed that he could not swim in high school because it was at the same time as basketball season,” Hickman’s father said. “He loves swimming because it was the first sport he did. He liked it because you competed by yourself. Track helped him learn how to compete. He is very even keeled now, especially on the court. Nothing speeds him up or bothers him.” The Seattle guard surprised many when he verbally committed to Kentucky because almost no one knew he even had a scholarship

offer. His father said being quiet is just the way his son is, and he didn’t see any reason to share news that he had a Kentucky offer. “He’s a real humble kid. We don’t even follow the [player] rankings or call recruiting services to get him ranked higher. If you love the game, you will get the right offers and the right coaches come after you. We stick by that and our work ethic,” Hickman, Sr. said. “He just wanted to keep the offer quiet. He was ecstatic to get it.” The Hickmans were almost ready to shut off his recruitment and evaluate the offers he already had when the UK offer came. Hickman, Sr. said assistant coach Tony Barbee made his son a “priority” and UK coach John Calipari made it clear he would be “pushed with nothing given to him” at Kentucky. “I think Nolan liked the way he heard he would be pushed, and that they were just not giving him the key to the machine. He wants to work,” Hickman, Sr. said. Hickman, Jr. knew plenty about Kentucky basketball. He said he grew up watching John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Devin Booker and others. He’s not as highly rated as many UK recruits — he’s a four-star player ranked anywhere from 30th to 75th in the 2021 recruiting classes by various recruiting services — but that only motivates him.

“I think Nolan liked the way he heard he would be pushed, and that they were just not giving him the key to the machine. He wants to work.”

“I am kind of used to not getting the recognition I deserve, so that just makes me go harder, try harder,” the future UK player said. Lack of recognition has not been a problem with UK fans since his commitment to John Calipari’s team. “All they’ve done is show me love. A lot of people comment on pictures and stuff [on social media],” Hickman, Jr. said while noting he went from 7,000 to 10,000 Instagram followers in less than two weeks. The 6-2 Hickman transferred from Eastside Catholic in Seattle to Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah, for his senior season and his new coach, Paul Peterson, says he’s going to be a great fit at Kentucky and its fan base. “The biggest thing is he is not afraid to be challenged. Whether he’s the No. 1 guy or No. 2 guy, he’s going to work the same and get after you whether it’s here or at Kentucky,” Peterson said. He’s not afraid of off-court challenges, either. He’s launching TheGiveBack Foundation in January: he has rights to his own website, nolanhickman.com, to help families who need extra assistance. The last two years, he’s had his own basketball camp in Seattle to give back to inner-city youth. This year it had to be virtual yet still had 88 registrants (that doesn’t count siblings who used the same link) with participants from Indonesia, United Kingdom and the Philippines. He sent every registrant a basketball, T-shirt, water bottle, face mask and sanitizer for free. “Shipping alone was almost $600, but that’s just the sacrifice he wants to make,” Hickman, Sr. said. “Family members donate, private sponsors help. He donates all proceeds to the Boys & Girls Club, where he plays basketball so more kids can play basketball. Basically, he just loves giving back and helping anyone he can.” •

Mulled Apple Cider for a Crowd INGREDIENTS: • 1 gallon fresh apple cider • 1 orange, separated but not peeled • 1 bosc pear, sliced and de-seeded • 1-inch piece of peeled, fresh ginger • 2 cinnamon sticks • 1 tsp. whole cloves • (optional) ½ tsp. allspice berries • (optional) 3 star anise pods

TO PREPARE: Pour apple cider into your slow cooker. 5-quart size or larger works best. Add pear and orange. In the center of a piece of cheese cloth, add cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice and ginger. Tie the bundle with kitchen twine and drop into the pot. Set crock pot to low and let sit for 3-4 hours. If desired, strain the cider. Serve in mugs. Can be garnished with fresh or dried fruit, cinnamon sticks, star anise pods or a pat of butter (trust us on this one.) If you’re serving a crowd, keep topping the pot off with more fresh apple cider and keep warm. If you replace more than half, kick the heat up to high for 30 minutes to help the flavors mingle. Optional kick: If you’d like yours spiked, bourbon, applejack or cinnamon liqueur are all lovely choices. (Adapted from The Kitchn)
