Johnsons jessica + mike august 15th
Although they attended UK together and even lived in neighboring fraternity/sorority houses, Jessica and Mike didn’t meet until after he had graduated and she was in medical school. They met at Local Taco through a mutual friend and decided to go on a date. They went for drinks at Rincon then wandered around downtown Lexington together. He didn’t tell her he had a triathlon the next morning and stayed out late anyway. After winning his age group, he took Jessica to a Cincinnati Reds game that very afternoon! On a Monday in June, Mike invited Jessica for a walk in Veteran’s Park after work, as they often did. She was running late, but Mike had her meet him on a bridge. He was waiting with their dog, Ghost. When Mike reached into his bag to pull out a ring, Jessica was ecstatic. The couple’s future best man was waiting near the bridge with a camera to capture the moment. Mike is a Lexington native while Jessica grew up in Danville. They chose to have their wedding on her parents’ farm, which allowed them to choose a very relaxed pace for the day. They loved having their wedding at a site so personal to them both, and it offered a beautiful backdrop. Jessica and Mike wanted a small wedding party, so they chose only a best man and a maid of honor who picked their own attire. The couple’s best friends all chose to wear coordinating outfits of their choice. The groom and best man wore matching ties from the Keeneland Gift Shop in blush and navy. Mike wore custom wooden cufflinks engraved with his initials, a wedding gift from the bride. Jessica wore a lace gown with a gold beaded belt from Anthropologie and a birdcage veil with a custom floral hair clip. The ceremony took place at sunset before a massive willow tree. The bride hung strings of flowers from its branches, but they chose to allow the natural beauty of the spot to shine through. Just as Jessica and Mike were about to walk back down the aisle, Ghost started whimpering. They motioned for her to come over and she ran up and gave them both a kiss and walked with them up the aisle–an unplanned moment that the couple will never forget.

A hayride transported guests from the ceremony site to the reception area. The bride’s uncle Ron took his job as the tractor driver very seriously and showed up in bibbed overalls and a straw hat! Guests loved this detail and everyone took photos with their enthusiastic chauffer. Ron dropped everyone off at a cocktail hour–an idea the couple incorporated into their wedding day at the suggestion of their photographer–where everyone mingled and enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and drinks. This further added to the day’s laid-back vibe, which is exactly what the couple hoped for: they are both very laid-back people and wanted a wedding where they could truly relax and have fun! At the reception, an old canoe served as a beer cooler, keeping the drink line short throughout the evening. Navy chevron tablecloths with blush napkins made the dinner area cheerful and cute, perfect for the casual catered barbeque dinner. Guests’ blue glasses could be labeled with chalk, a fun and practical touch. Gold and blush table numbers were custom made by the bride while the floral arrangements were put together by the bride’s mom, mother-in-law, aunts and best friends: eucalyptus was featured in all the bouquets, a fragrant and quirky choice that really set the look of the day’s floral arrangements apart. The reception area tent had built-in lighting, but floral-scented candles added a romantic glow as the sun set.

GlenLary Estate Your wedding wish

T
he GlenLary Estate is the premier location for an elegant Southern wedding or special event. From sophisticated casual to exclusively formal, your event will be stunning against the blue Kentucky sky and green pastures.
Two historic lodging facilities are surrounded by 80 acres of rolling bluegrass amid a working horse farm. Various venue options are available and can accommodate small outdoor galas to large tented affairs and intimate indoor events. The stately Lary House is the perfect place for the bride and her bridesmaids to prepare. The restored Lairy Cabin, with its “techno-rustic charm, provides space for the groom and the groomsmen to gather. If overnight lodging is desired, accommodations for up to19 guests are available. Enjoy the serenity and privacy the Estate offers including a beautiful star filled night sky away from city lights and the hustle and bustle of traffic. No matter the season, GlenLary can fulfill your wedding wishes. Imagine a crisp and sunny October day where the bright fall colors and cerulean blue skies are the backdrop for your celebration. Or perhaps your wish is a winter wonderland with your friends and family gathered together. Spring and summer weddings on the Estate are spectacular with frolicking fillies and flowers dotting the green landscape. Omnipresent photo op sites include rustic barns, pastures and scenic ponds. GlenLary is not just an impressive and romantic venue, it has a wonderful history. Over 175 years ago it was built by the Lary family who trekked across the Appalachian Mountains to a new land. Settling in the fertile bluegrass, they started a new life. Through good times and bad, sadly they lost their Kentucky home in 1905. But the Lary heart is strong and in 2006, nearly a century later, through determination and perseverance, the Lary by Elizabeth Kirsch Family is home again. & Diane Lary of GlenLary Estate

Hurleys amber + dallas july 25th
Not many couples’ stories begin in PE class, but for Amber and Dallas, that’s where their journey began. They had gym together in high school and quickly became friends. They decided to attend senior prom together, and soon after, began dating. After almost eight years together, Dallas planned for family and friends to meet the couple at their house secretly one November day. With the help of his sister, he carved pumpkins that read “Marry Me?” Amber was surprised by the sweet autumn proposal. As the bride and groom were both born and raised in Louisville, the area was a natural choice for their wedding. The bride looked at many different locations, but once she saw the quaint, old church of Gingerwoods, she immediately fell in love with the site, which is next to a horse farm. Before the ceremony, Dallas surprised his bride with a bottle of champagne and a hand-written note while she was getting ready with her bridesmaids. The bridesmaids wore matching dresses, but their hair, shoes and accessories were varied to reflect the personality of each. Amber carried a handkerchief, given to her by her grandmother. Upon entering the ceremony, guests saw a table set up by the couple that memorialized special people in their lives who had passed. Guests were also given paper fans that read “Best Day Ever July 25th 2015”. Family members ushered guests to their seats, sang and did readings during the ceremony. Amber and Dallas exchanged vows at a rustic wooden arch with flowers hanging from mason jars, overlooking the beautiful farmland of Gingerwoods. The reception was held inside and outside. Inside, lights and drapery were strung from the ceiling. Flowers were a big element of the day’s décor, from the sign that welcomed guests to the many arrangements that bore roses, baby’s breath, hydrangeas and other beautiful blooms in white, pink and blush. The bride accented the florals with gold and navy, which matched the groom’s suit. The outdoors space of the reception was designed with a more rustic flare to match the location. It held additional seating, a lounge area and the dance floor and DJ. The reception was catered by Ladyfingers, who provided a delicious assortment of passed appetizers and a buffet. Guests enjoyed bourbon slushies that were a particular favorite of the groom’s.

The bride chose to have a traditional tiered cake that was decorated with brushed gold and flowers that matched the bridesmaids’ bouquets. She also selected multiple smaller cakes in a variety of designs and flavors for guests to enjoy. They sat on a table with a rosette table cover, picking up on the day’s floral theme.

Rather than a guest book, guests signed a painted globe with gold Sharpies. This created a meaningful token for the bride and groom to keep and remember their special day forever. Guests snapped instant pictures at a photo booth and hung them on a clothesline between dancing, eating and celebrating with the couple. The maids of honor “threw down” in a rap battle during their speech while the best man poked good-natured fun at the bride. Amber and Dallas organized their evening so that they were able to dine and spend time with both sets of parents. The ring bearer and flower girl were given carrots and apples to feed to the farm’s horses. In a day full of sweet, sentimental touches, Amber and Dallas enjoyed a truly incredible wedding day that was equal parts sunshine, romance and down-home Kentucky beauty.

Stoltzes jane + kenny july 19th
As newcomers to the rowing club at Cambridge University, Jane Batchelor and Kenny Stoltz immersed themselves in the early morning training on the river and club social activities. They found themselves spending a lot of time together, but it was only after friends encouraged Jane that she finally agreed to go on a date with Kenny. They’ve been together since. Jane is a Marketing Manager at Gap, Inc. while Kenny works as a Product Manager for Google. This has meant living abroad and at times, apart. One afternoon while living in London, the pair met up after work with plans to attend a concert together. They found themselves with time to kill, so they browsed outdoor markets and took a stroll along the Thames. Kenny began walking them away from the concert venue, which Jane found a little odd. Kenny stopped them on the Waterloo Bridge and pulled out a photo album he titled “Our Adventure Book”, a nod to the movie Up. When Jane opened it, she read, “Will You go on an adventure with me?” When she looked up, Kenny was holding out a ring. They enjoyed champagne at the concert to celebrate their engagement. Kenny was born in Lexington and lived there until he decided to travel and study abroad. He and Jane had visited at least once a year since they met. The couple decided to pick a wedding venue that made the most of Kentucky’s beautiful landscape. Jane felt The Ashley Inn offered the right accommodations for the bridal party, as well as an equestrian center that helped illustrate the importance of horses in Kentucky to Jane’s British family. Since she and her sisters had ridden and owned horses, she loved the idea of including them in the wedding. Before their wedding ceremony, Jane sent her groom some gifts to mark the occasion. She sent him cufflinks, a pair of monogrammed socks and a rare bourbon tasting set–perfect for a Kentucky wedding! Jane’s gown featured a stunning mermaid silhouette with lace accents that coordinated beautifully with the romantic touches of the wedding décor. She completed her look with a bridal jewelry suite by

Miriam Haskell. The bridesmaids wore soft lavender dresses with layered pearl and leaf necklaces–a gift from Jane–that complemented the bride’s jewelry. Kenny wore a grey suit with a soft blue Duchamp tie and pocket square, picking up on the day’s pastel palette. He also sported a pair of handcrafted bespoke Buday shoes. The ceremony was held outside, with a beautiful view over rolling hills. The wedding party entered through a pergola decorated with flowers and ferns and walked up an aisle scattered with rose petals. Each row of chairs was decorated with a jar of flowers. The ceremony featured three readings by friends and family members. For the reception, the couple aimed to recreate an English garden party while incorporating some elements of Kentucky. Buntings, mismatched crockery and sweet flower arrangements provided a sense of romance and whimsy. A rustic screen door was propped up to display the seating chart. Bourbon barrels and an aged, antique door served as a bourbon bar. The guestbook cover featured outlines of Jane and Kenny’s home countries, with their hometowns marked with hearts. The couple wanted to serve something tasty that would appeal to all their guests. They were living in the UK at the time, where it was hard to get good barbeque, so they turned to J. Render’s for the catering. The wedding

cake featured three layers with the bride’s favorite flavors; red velvet, lemon and chocolate sponge. Because the bride loves macarons, the bride’s sister covered the cake with them. A candy bar allowed guests to help themselves to a variety of sweets as a favor from the day. A DJ provided entertainment for the evening. Guests danced, laughed and helped Jane Batchelor and Kenny Stoltz celebrate their new adventure together.

Gotchers brandice + todd december 31st
Brandice and Todd had been in contact with one another by email and FaceTime during his deployment in Africa, but they met faceto-face for the first time in July 2013. Their first date was fishing and picnicking at one of Todd’s favorite fishing spots. They were nearly inseparable after that. Todd arranged for a friend to play “Question” by the Old 97s on the guitar while they strolled through Veteran’s Park one afternoon. Todd, shaking with excitement, proposed. A photographer was on standby to capture the moment. The couple decided to host a rehearsal dinner at the Woodford Inn where their family and friends gathered to dine and sip cocktails. Out of town guests received a welcome basket filled with Kentucky Proud products and a tour guide to Lexington and the surrounding area. They gifted the bridesmaids with monogrammed Oxford shirts, Kate Spade jewelry to wear on the wedding day and custom made monogrammed muffs. The groomsmen were given Edward Jagger safety razors, shave kits and a cigar box with a miniature bottle of bourbon. For their New Year’s Eve wedding day, the couple chose Castle Post because they had recently moved to Woodford County and loved the idea of having the festivities so close to their new home. They both loved the castle, but Todd had never been inside. It had been the first place Brandice had visited when relocating to Lexington, so she knew it was the perfect site. Before the ceremony, Todd surprised his bride with two custommade diamond shadow bands. Brandice sent him a silver Charles Hubert pocket watch with the inscription, “I will love you ‘til the end of time.” The ring bearer’s pillow, bride’s wedding clutch and a patch sewn into the bride’s gown were all made from her mother’s wedding dress. The bridesmaids wore black cocktail dresses in different styles, all by Alfred Sung. The groomsmen wore black tuxedos with gold vests and ties, but their gold “Bourbon” socks from Lucky Monkey were a fun Kentucky touch.
TOPS Weddings | 31
Brandice made a grand entrance from the top of the castle’s staircase, escorted by her father to the altar. The interior of Castle Post added to the couple’s theme, adding gold tones and beautiful details. Signs with Art Deco detailing further enhanced the elegance and feel of a New Year’s Eve celebration. The bride created favors for her guests by wrapping Hershey Deluxe Kisses in sheer ivory organza bags with an Art Deco label that ready “Brandi and Todd, Midnight Kisses, 12.31.15”. Incorporating both the wedding theme and the bride’s work as a Retail Sales Representative for The Hershey Company, this was a truly sweet way to thank guests for sharing in the couple’s big day! Guests also signed a wooden puzzle in lieu of a guestbook, and a bottle of champagne that the couple planned to drink on their first wedding anniversary. The reception began with an open bar and hors d’oeuvres in the foyer while guests mingled and toured the castle. It then progressed to a buffet dinner in the grand ballroom, followed by toasts and the cutting of the couple’s three-tier cake, wrapped in gold ribbon and topped with ivory roses. The bride and her father danced to “Memories” by Elvis Presley, as they had done when she was a little girl.

Gem Source
What’s old is new again E
state gems are a timeless wedding trend. Many brides choose to incorporate sentimental stones into their engagement rings, wedding bands or other bridal jewelry. This makes a meaningful piece of jewelry even more special and tells a story that weaves together the past with the couple’s future together. Jim Salyer, a registered gemologist (GIA), founded Gem Source in 1989 with an emphasis on creating high-quality, finely crafted jewelry. “I felt the tradition of celebrating key moments in peoples’ lives with gifts of fine jewelry–future heirloom pieces–should be held to higher standards than the usual price point merchandising and marketing often used by typical jewelry outlets.” He built Gem Source into a family-owned and operated business: his wife, Gerry, and their two sons, Ian and Luke, also work there. Estate diamonds and gems have to be handled carefully and properly set by an expert who understands the unique properties of each stone. Choosing the right mounting will not only ensure that the stone remains secure, but will also ensure that it is displayed to its fullest potential. One option for brides looking to update an old ring is to remake the original ring in a more current metal. Gem Source had one client who chose to have an antique ring recreated in white gold using all the original stones: also, most rings can be adapted to varying shapes. This preserves the unique history and antique feel of the ring while bringing it into the 21st century! They also handle estate appraisals and consignments. Another option is to have an estate gem mounted in an entirely new custom-designed setting. Adding accent stones of other gems creates a piece that is unique to the bride-to-be who wears it. For brides who don’t already have a center stone, don’t fret! Gem Source has a Find Your Diamond tool that lets the buyer choose the right stone for their needs. Fine genuine sapphire is a Gem Source specialty, and a timeless favorite of brides from all eras. For the bride-to-be who already has the perfect engagement ring, a big concern might be what to choose for the wedding band. Jim’s solution? “Have a wedding band custom made,” he advises. “I design them to perfectly fit the contour of your ring while mirroring the engagement ring’s style. That creates a seamless look that will wow you for years to come.” Whether for an engagement ring, wedding band or sentimental piece of your bridal suite, make sure your jewelry tells a story!

Swinfords lucy + keenon june 27th
Keenon met Lucy while he was interning at the law office where she worked. Their first date was a year later, enjoying dinner together at Charlie Brown’s before taking in a movie at the Kentucky Theatre. They each knew they had found someone magical. When they were trapped in a rainstorm on their second date, Lucy realized that no matter what came their way, they enjoyed just being together. In September 2014, Keenon asked Lucy if she wanted to go for a hike through Raven Run Nature Sanctuary. When they approached their favorite spot, Keenon suggested they take a break. They snapped a photo and as Lucy got up to continue their hike, she realized Keenon wasn’t following along. When she turned, she saw him down on one knee, which took her by complete surprise. She says she carried a glow down the trail with them that lasted through the wedding and beyond! Colby Tavern, a restored historic house that was once a stopping point between Lexington and Winchester for travelers such as Henry Clay and Andrew Jackson, is the home of Keenon’s aunt and uncle. Enchanted with the grand home and lush fields, Lucy and Keenon chose it as the site for their wedding celebration. On the list of National Register of Historic Places, the house put a unique Southern mark on every element of the celebration. Lucy and Keenon shared a first look moment in the garden. Lucy walked down the grassy path from the house to find Keenon standing with his back to her. She tapped him on the shoulder and they both took in the excitement and romance of their big day. Lucy’s gown featured soft draping in the bust with lace detailing on the overskirt. Her bouquet featured white flowers accented with soft pink blooms. Keenon wore a khaki suit with a striped Jos. A. Bank tie with a felt heart embroidered on the back featuring their initials and wedding date. The ceremony was held in a horseshoe formation at the historically restored home. Urns bearing arrangements of greenery and blooms offered a beautiful decoration for the space. Lucy treasured the moment of saying her vows, feeling the honest and pure love that their relationship is built upon. She knew that walking down the aisle and

looking into her groom’s eyes was the only part of the day that truly mattered. The twelve attendants were close family and friends, with Keenon’s father serving as Best Man and Lucy’s sister as the Matron of Honor. The bridesmaids wore dresses in a deep navy, accessorized with pearl illusion necklaces, and they carried bouquets in shades of bright pink. Their three nieces served as “flower princesses” while their nephew did a reading. The reception was held inside sail-top tents near the property’s barn; flags at the peak of each tent blew cheerily in the breeze. Flower-draped chandeliers hung inside to illuminate the space. Each table bore a sheer polka dotted table cover, accented by pink napkins. The seating chart was hung on an antique iron door, decorated with a swath of flowers and greenery; small coordinating table arrangements offered a charming feel throughout the tent. Though the sky teased the couple and their guests all evening with the threat of rain, the sky opened up to a beautiful sunset, when candles were lit to offer a romantic glow throughout the night.

Millers alison + randy september 6th
Like many couples these days, Alison and Randy met online. They chatted for about a month before having their first date. They continued to meet, exploring all the best things that Kentucky offers, like local wine tastings, camping at Natural Bridge, tailgating at Keeneland, watching UK games, enjoying festivals at Boyd’s Orchard and trying local restaurants. Alison moved to Kentucky in 1996 with a Master’s degree in International Management and Marketing and works in Harrodsburg for Wausau Paper. Randy, an alumnus of both Purdue and Michigan State, moved to Kentucky in 2005 to work for Corning Incorporated in Harrodsburg. They both have come to love Kentucky and consider it their home. When it became clear that he had found the one, Randy made reservations at The Thoroughbred Club for Valentine’s Day. At a secluded table, decked out with candles and roses, Randy got down on one knee–and Alison was delighted to say, “Yes!” When they began planning their wedding, The Thoroughbred Club seemed like a natural choice of venue, as it would offer out of town guests a glimpse at the beauty and history of Kentucky’s Thoroughbred industry. Before the ceremony, Randy sent his bride a copy of their wedding invitation printed on Gorilla® Glass, a product made by his company. Because their faith is an important part of their commitment, Alison gave Randy a family Bible with their names imprinted on the cover. Alison wore a light cream lace dress with a short train, accessorized with a tennis bracelet that Randy had given her for their first dating anniversary. Her shoes had “Mrs. Miller, established 9.6.15” stickered on the bottom. Throughout the day, she carried a cross that was crocheted by her mother. The bridesmaids wore floor-length gold gowns with ruffles down the backs. Alison gave them matching monogrammed clutches to carry during the reception. Alison’s daughter, Ashley, served as maid of honor and wore a matching satin dress; both she and her mother wore flowers and pearls in their hair. The groom and groomsmen wore black suits with ties that matched the bridesmaids’ dresses. The ceremony was held outside, with white and pink rose petals lining the aisle and creating a monogram at the end. Guests sang the hymn “Joyful,

Joyful We Adore Thee” and friends of the couple sang “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”. A string trio played selections before, during and after the ceremony. Close friends read scripture. During the ceremony, Randy spoke of his love to Ashley as her stepfather and presented her with a keepsake necklace. Inside The Thoroughbred Club, tables were decorated with pink garden roses, green berries and green and white hydrangeas. Smaller arrangements were created in julep cups, a nod to the Kentucky setting. Each place setting had a dinner and bar menu detailed in the wedding theme colors and every guest received a birdseed favor, as the groom has an interest in birding.

The signature cocktail was made by Randy’s family called Harry Harry’s, a refreshing mixture of citrus and vodka. Randy also chose to serve Woodford Reserve bourbon. Guests enjoyed passed hors d’oeuvres before dining from a number of dinner stations. Late in the evening, guests enjoyed some late night wings and sliders. The cake mirrored the bride’s dress with the buttercream frosting and featured layers of Italian Cream cake, red velvet and lemon with raspberry filling. The couple took dance lessons during the summer to prepare for their first dance. They choreographed a routine dance set to Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud”. After the dancing, laughter, dining and merriment, guests lined the exit with lit sparklers to send Alison and Randy off on their honeymoon to Traverse City, Michigan.

Hendricksons kristen + jonathan september 5th
Kristen grew up in Versailles and met Jonathan during her senior year at the University of Alabama. They began dating and found they shared a love of traveling, going to the lake and watching sports–both UK basketball and Alabama football. They love going to the wineries in the North Georgia Mountains, and Jonathan knew it would be the perfect place to propose. So one hot June day, he drove them to their favorite winery, Montaluce, and proposed within five minutes because he was so nervous! Though they both now live in Atlanta, it was clear from the beginning that they would return to the bride’s hometown for their big day. Since many of their guests were coming from far away, they wanted to incorporate as much of what makes Kentucky special into their wedding day as possible. The bride created her invitations with a mix of materials. She hand cut the Paper Source envelope liner paper to match the invitations, ordered from Gartner Studios. They chose to have a first look at the Mansion at Griffin Gate. It helped calm their nerves. Kristen’s father picked her up in a vintage 1950 Rolls Royce for the trip to the ceremony site, St. Peter’s Catholic Church. The aisle was lined with pink and white rose pew arrangements, alternating with white and gold lanterns that illuminated the space with candlelight. The Carnegie Quartet provided classical music during the ceremony, which was officiated by Fr. Norman Fischer. Guests filled the air with bubbles as the couple made their exit to the reception. The bride wore a lace jacket for the church ceremony, which she removed for the reception, showing off her gown’s lace straps and keyhole back. Later on in the evening, she transformed the dress again, removing the straps entirely. She carried her late brother’s tie wrapped around her bouquet to have him close during the ceremony. She also carried an heirloom linen handkerchief, which has been carried by every bride in her mother’s family for 125 years. Her veil was also a family treasure, originally handmade and beaded by her late grandmother and worn by her mother on her wedding day 32 years prior. The groom and groomsmen wore navy with pink gingham bowties from High Cotton Ties and pocket squares, adding a touch of whimsy.

The cocktail hour was held outside of Keeneland’s Keene Barn. Draped white bulb lights that swayed in the evening breeze, hung from the willow trees on the grounds. Guests sipped signature cocktails created in honor of the bride and groom while nibbling hors d’oeuvres like Kentucky Hot Browns and Pretzel Spoon Short Rib BBQ. They signed a Woodford Reserve barrel top, a special keepsake for the couple. The reception progressed into the Keeneland Entertainment Center. Guests were treated to an elegant dinner of prime rib. Adults perused a full premium bar while kids (and the kids at heart) enjoyed a pink-themed candy bar. Kristen and her friend

crafted the signage boards for the wedding. The table linens included gold overlays with gold glitter table runners. The head table bore a long pink and white rose table runner and gold accents. The three-tier Mr. and Mrs. cake continued the day’s gold champagne bubble theme, and the script topper complemented the table number signs. Two separate lounge areas featured seating and pillows by the bride’s employer. A dance floor allowed guests to cut loose to the tunes of the Donny Brook band. The couple exited through a tunnel of sparklers. As a special gift to each of their guest, the couple found real Thoroughbred horseshoes. With the help of family and friends, they scrubbed and painted each one gold. Every guest went home with a little Kentucky luck and the love and appreciation of Kristen and Jonathan.

Ramseys lauren + matt may 23rd
Matt coached Lauren’s brother on the local high school's football team. Lauren first saw Matt at an athletic banquet at the end of the season, where later that evening, a coach set the two up. Their time spent together was so wonderful, they were engaged after only four short months! When friends and family would ask if they were sure, Lauren and Matt would always just smile and reply, “When you know, you know!” Their engagement was the day before Matt’s birthday and the hottest of the year. They hiked out on one of the trails around Cumberland Falls. Lauren climbed to the top of a rock to lie in the sun with her eyes closed (“like a lizard,” she put it) while Matt wandered away. He returned and tapped her on the shoulder. He asked Lauren if she loved him. She laughed and said yes. He tapped her on the shoulder again, and this time, she turned around. He asked, “Then, will you marry me?” Matt had gone and arranged for another hiker to capture the moment on camera. Despite growing up just five minutes apart, the two never met until they were in their twenties. Matt played football for the University of Kentucky, and the two are now Lexingtonians. They enjoy watching UK sports, walking around their neighborhood and talking and laughing during supper. The morning of the wedding, Lauren, her bridesmaids and her family gathered at her mom and dad’s house for a honeymoon shower and bridal breakfast. They got their hair and makeup done while dancing, laughing and reminiscing. During the first few months of their relationship, the couple spent a lot of time out on Matt’s family farm. They knew there wasn’t any other place on earth they would rather be married than Pickard Farm. Lauren and Matt had a first look moment. They walked together on the pier and Lauren was unpleasantly surprised when a gust of wind picked up her veil and nearly tossed it in the pond! Fortunately, it was saved by a rail. The wedding ceremony was held out in the field on an altar Lauren’s dad made out of concrete. He made six columns to line the aisle and they thatched a covering out of tree limbs. Lauren wore a flower crown of peonies and rosebuds with a veil monogrammed in blush to match her gown. Her cousin, Cathy Jacobs, lent her a pair of pearl and diamond earrings as the bride’s “something borrowed” while another cousin, Joy Robyn Dixon

Fenwick, gave her an antique compact as her “something old”; a blue patch sewn into her dress was the “something blue”. The couple exited the ceremony in a bright red farm truck decorated with tin cans. The reception was held in the barn. Lights were strung both inside and outside through a tent that was attached for dining space. Blush fabric was draped from the ceiling. In the loft, a pink cotton rag garland stretched from one end of the barn to the other and marked off additional seating space. Tables bore bouquets of snapdragons or peonies with hydrangeas: the bride wanted as many flowers in the barn as could fit! Pale blue gingham tablecloths gave the space a downhome feel. Place settings were accented with napkins in the day's signature colors. A cigar roller from Kentucky Gentleman Cigars handed out bourbon-dipped cigars and did a demonstration of the rolling process. Corn hole boards painted by a friend of the bride provided entertainment and guests snapped instant photos in a photo booth. With two dance floors and lots of room for dining and having fun, there was plenty for guests to enjoy. Everyone was well fed,

McGuires kelly + nick january 9th
Many couples have a long history together, like Nick and Kelly, who met in middle school. Kelly was a cheerleader and Nick played for the opposing team; Nick wasn’t quite on his game, as his attention was on a blonde on the sidelines. After the game, he introduced himself and they hit it off immediately. They lived just six miles apart in Eastern Kentucky, so they met up for a movie and have been inseparable since. Kelly’s brother, Austin, was about to propose to his girlfriend. Nick went along with Austin as support while he was ring shopping. Both came out of the store with rings for their future wives. Once Nick had the ring, he couldn’t wait any longer to propose. He popped the question one night while Kelly was getting ready for work. The impromptu proposal was perfect for the adventurous, fun-loving couple! Nick and Kelly have a deep love for their hometown of Prestonsburg, Kentucky. They love to explore all that Appalachia has to offer, including hunting, fishing, hiking, boating and camping. They’ve traveled near and far and agree that there’s no place more beautiful than the hills of their home. So when it came time to select a wedding venue, the choice was obvious: Jenny Wiley State Park, which is located in Prestonsburg. The May Lodge offered the rustic look of a large cabin, set on a hill surrounded by the beauty of the Dewey Lake area. Kelly grew up less than a mile from the lodge. Both of their families had attended the Sunday buffet after church for decades. Their connection to the spot and its sweeping views of the beauty of Eastern Kentucky made it absolutely perfect for their nuptials. Kelly wore an ivory gown with a chapel-length veil, paired with vintage lace heels. The bridesmaids chose their own dresses in shades of navy or grey. The flower girls wore Kelly’s great grandmother’s pearl hairpieces in their long, loose curls (which was offset by a porcelain cat that one of the girls snuck in to play with during the ceremony.) Nick wore a slate navy blue tux with a watch Kelly gifted him before the ceremony. Because the couple are avid outdoorsmen, they chose ceremony decorations to reflect that. Pine branches, antlers, antique lanterns and candles gave the space an earthy feel with a romantic glow. The pastor carried the

bride’s late grandfather’s Bible. The altar was cut from a poplar tree that Kelly’s father loved to meditate under; upon cutting it, the exposed center of the tree made a heart, which was a sign to him that the marriage was meant to be. He also used the tree to make table chargers. The reception began with a slideshow of photographs from the couple’s lives. It then proceeded to a dinner of herb roasted chicken, red potatoes and salad. The space was decorated with pine trees taken from their family properties to bring the outdoors in. The cake was designed and created by Nick’s childhood neighbor who is now a pastry chef living in Louisville. The 5-tier cake

Guests danced, gave toasts and did what Nick and Kelly’s family and friends do best–have fun! The couple cherished seeing their loved ones out on the dance floor. The guestbook was created by Kelly’s father from an oak plank, which the couple would later hang in their home as a reminder of the beautiful celebration.
