old has existed in fashion for thousands of years.

The ancient Egyptians wore crowns of gold, but even before that the Sumer civilization featured gold jewelry worn by men and women in 3000 BCE. The Royal Tombs at Ur offer incredible insight as to how much variety existed when it came to the styles of earrings, bracelets, and chains the people wore. There were, in fact, more varieties of jewelry then than there are now!

The Egyptians developed many of the metallurgy techniques that we still use today such as testing the purity of gold through fire assaying, alloying it with other metal for hardness and color variations, and casting, including the lost-wax technique which is still the preferred method for most metal working. These achievements weren’t accomplished recently, either, but rather were in place during the time of King Tutankhamun, who died in 1352 BCE, whose tomb is the reason we know that they knew how to do all of these amazing things.

It was also King Tutankhamun and his queen that have been depicted wearing woven linen embroidered with gold. Fashionable men and women in Ancient Crete around 1750 – 1400 BCE wore girdle at the waist in gold and other metals and Tarquin the Ancient is recorded as being the first to appear in Roman dress in a robe embroidered with gold.

Cloth of gold continued to be worn, especially by those who were royalty or consuls, throughout the world since ancient times. It was considered the height of fashion from the 14th to the 17th century for both men and women and generally imported from Italy. In order for the cloth to be more flexible, fine metal wire was wrapped around silk thread and then these threads were fed across the fabric, giving it a lustrous sheen. European royalty was so enamored by the cloth that it was used for coronations and official meetings such as when Richard III was arrayed in cloth of gold at his coronation in 1483, with the gold signifying the divine consecration or like when Henry VIII met his rival Francis I at Golden Vale in 1520 they and their courts were dressed so spectacularly and lavishly that their rivalry became called Field of Cloth of Gold.

In 2000, gold made a fashion resurgence on the runways and has been making a comeback for luxurious wearing ever since. That year saw John Galliano design a gold slip dress for Christian Dior while Prada and Gucci also create cloth of gold designs for their runway and couture shows. In the last fourteen years, more designers have had fun with cloth of gold. In 2014, Son Jung Wan had swingy skirts, jacket lapels, and gold-tipped shoes while American designer Lela Rose showcased a flounce skirt, peplum blouse, wide v-neck dress and floor-length gown all in a golddusted floral design. And Dolce & Gabbana mixed the old with the new with their 5th and 4th century BCE gold coin inspired dresses and belts for the 2014 spring runway.

However, the models today aren’t really wearing gold and silver as they did in centuries past. Rather, to produce metallic fabric nowadays, aluminum or stainless steel is used, which also makes the fabric less expensive and more durable. Metals are most often incorporated into the production of brocade and lame fabrics.

WHERE DO THE OTHER COLORS OF GOLD COME FROM? There’s no such thing as gold as being any other color than yellow in nature. All other “golds” must be mixed with other metals in order to achieve the color variations.

In fact, any karat other than 24K gold (pure gold) is called an “alloy”. For example, 14K gold is an alloy made up of 14 parts pure gold and 10 parts other metals (Whitfield Jack).

White Gold – a silver-

colored alloy of gold with nickel, platinum, and zinc Rose Gold – a pinkcolored alloy of gold with copper, silver, platinum, and zinc Green Gold – is a naturally occurring alloy of 75% gold and 255 silver and appears to be a greenish yellow. Lydians as far back as 860 BCE knew it under the name “Electrum”. Cadmium used to be added to the alloy to enhance its green tones before its dangers to humans were known.

Purple Gold – is an alloy of gold and aluminum called AuAI2 and is considered 18K. It is more brittle than other gold alloys and will shatter, so it is often used as a “gem” rather than by itself.

Blue Gold – is an alloy of gold and indium containing about 46% gold and 54% indium giving this intermetallic an almost clear blue color.

During my years as an entrepreneur, I ‘ve been faced with many challenges on many different levels. One challenge in particular came in November 2012. One of the businesses that my wife and I launched was completely dependent upon the website associated with it. The site crashed and lost most of its functionality. The function that was lost was crucial to the operation of the business.

We knew that we would need a new site, but our budget was maxed. We didn’t have operating capital to fall back on so we had no choice but to shut down the site until we had the funds to rebuild it. As frustrating as it was, we believed that the business would be significant in our future endeavors. We knew that this business would not only benefit us, but all who would later be involved. We thought back to the reason we started the business. That reason gave us the strength that we needed to pull through.

This is what I call, “The Why Factor”.

The Why Factor says that, “If you have a strong enough why, you can deal with any what.” I coined this phrase during some of our toughest times in entrepreneurship. Each time we considered giving up, we thought back to why we started. If the reason we started hadn’t lost its value, what we had to do to stay the course was irrelevant. We just had to come up with a new plan and strategy.

I managed to secure some contract work, and in ten months, we had enough to rebuild the site. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise. We did a lot of research during the down time and built a new site and business model that was far stronger than the one that we previously had. Although it took a little more than a year, we were able to re-launch.

We’ve experienced growth each month since.

If we had given up when faced with adversity, we would have a different and far less interesting story to tell.

She began as little more than an accidental tourist in the kitchen, but with her love of sugar and a desire to bake yummy treats, she started to get more serious about her hobby a few years ago. The more familiar she got with her ingredients and what she could do with them, the more creative Christine got. One thing just sort of led to another and now we have face-eating squid cakes and Little Shop of Horrors chocolate strawberry waffle cones!

When asked about why she chose

monster movie goodies set against the sweetness of the June Cleaver persona, Christine replied, “Well, I love being spooked. I love the idyllic imagery of the 1950’s and I love sugar. To me, it’s just a combination of all of my very favorite things.”

This all makes perfect sense when one realizes that her top three heroes are Tim Burton, Vincent Price, and Paula Dean.

These are all people she admires for following their own imaginations and she wants to live up to that ideal.

f you want to feel free again, you better get on that free road.

Highway 29 is the most common route, and Silverado Trail is for the locals. Driving in Napa will soften any heart rate with its views alone. PART TWO of our Napa Valley adventure takes us to the charming, quiet, and shopping-friendly district of Calistoga; easily accessible by either route.

In Part One (July issue of Fashion Affair), we advised that you arrive at the Oakland airport. Less traffic here and the car rental rates are competitive.

But if you have that extra time to kill and don’t mind gridlock, travel into SFO in San Fran and scoop every bit of that up.

A short 20 minute drive from Downtown Napa Valley and you will find yourself in the heavenly enclave of St. Helena. Our tour guide Doug White of “Beyond the Label” was born there and swears it’s the main artery to this part of Napa Valley. You get a feel that many artisans from San Francisco come here to re-charge. Just a few miles after St. Helena, your afternoon of wine tasting, antique shopping and spa hopping will be perfectly complimented by your final destination: The Sunburst Hotel in Calistoga.

The geothermal pools at the SUNBURST CALISTOGA are fed by mineral hot springs located under the property. As the water is pumped to the surface, it cools from 180 degrees to around 100 - 104 degrees and enters the Jacuzzi.

From there, the water is pumped into the wading/ soaking pool which is maintained at 90-94 degrees. Lastly, that pool feeds into the swimming pool, maintained at 80-86 degrees.

Prepare to ship a few items home; it’s one-of-a-kind shopping in Calistoga and nearby St. Helena. We cannot warn you enough.

The Sunburst in Downtown Calistoga is that morsel of heaven you travel for and you definitely do not have to love wine to come here. But it sure doesn’t hurt.
