Maripossa debuted in Australia in 2010. Within its first year the label was invited to showcase its artisan jewellery in Berlin, receiving the Young Designer Award for Accessories during F/W 2011/12 Mercedes-Benz Berlin Fashion Week for ‘Pantomimes’, selected as a semi-finalist for the British Realise Your Dream Awards 2012, and a finalist for the Melbourne Design Awards 2012. Drawing on a background in psychology and fashion design, self-taught designer Lauren Besser is guided by experimentation and instinct. This playful experimentation is evident with each evolving collection wherein designs continue to provoke curiosity and dialogue between wearer and observer. Focusing on notions of contradiction and opposition, coarse metals are transformed into fabric-like jewellery fusing raw earth crystals, sterling silver and fine chains. By interspersing these contrasting mediums each piece has its own distinct sense of aesthetic malleability. Imagination and introspection are embedded into the works, with organic rings and cuffs formed utilising the process of lost wax casting. Woven styles are created by a small team of artisans and are hand oxidized or dip-dyed ensuring the exclusivity of each piece. Each Maripossa piece is designed and made by hand in Australia.

The current collection, Qualia, is inspired by subjectivity. The world we live in is a perceived world, within which we do not see the world as it is, but as we are. Our perception of the ways in which we engage with the world around us shape who we are and how we percieve others. We often experience shared moments differently. If our world exists as subjective perception, what then can be determined as reality, as truth? ollowed by high profile fashion F figures, artists and musicians, Maripossa has been worn by Rihanna, Georgia May Jagger, Kimbra, Anja Rubik, Audrey Kitching, among others and has featured in Vogue, Russh, Oyster, Grazia, Fallen, Faint, FashionTrend, Cleo, InStyle, Sunday Life, The Age, The Sydney Herald, Berlin FashionTV, WWD. White Eagle Leather Fringe Neck Piece $263.00
This neck piece takes its inspiration from the plumage of the birds and it belongs to my new collection Bodega Bay.
Bodega Bay is a small seaside town located in the north coast of California, about 60 km from San Francisco. In 1963, Alfred Hitchcock chose it as the location for his “The Birds”. This ornament, characterised by a great visual impact, is for sure a statement neck piece and it is dedicated to a strong and determined woman, who’s not afraid to be daring in her style choices.
Desert Sands Necklace The centrepiece of this necklace was discovered in a tiny Moroccan shop, a buried treasure, which forms the focal point of this multi layered necklace. Rows of bone, metal and glass beads are brought together with a single row of woven ribbon. The black and ivory chevron ribbon was another find in the souks of Marrakech. Its soft around the neck and gives a graphic touch to this special piece.

THE SMART GIRL’S GUIDE TO BUYING THE PERFECT COAT BY JENI TETAMORE
Winter is here for real and most places in the Northern Hemisphere will have cold and wet until at least the end of March, so now is a fantastic time to take advantage of post-Christmas sales and get yourself the coat you’ve always wanted. But what to get? There’s poly/down, ski, all-weather, wool, leather, synthetics – Oh, my! The key here is to know your own reasons for getting a coat. Do you want something that can go from office to club? Do you live in a really wet climate? Maybe you want to go skiing, ice skating at the outdoor rink, or snowshoeing… Perhaps what you really need is something that can withstand the rigors of small children spilling hot cocoa all over you and still look awesome. It’s all right, I’ve got you covered! That’s what girlfriends are for, right? 28 FASHIONAFFAIRMAGAZINE.COM

SKI JACKETS
A common mistake among rookies is believing that getting any old waterproof or insulated jacket for the slopes or cold-weather activity will do just fine. What often gets forgotten is the fact that you are going to encounter two major issues while being outside:
1. Wet – in the form of flying snow, landing in the snow, snow being thrown at you, etc. 2. You are going to work up a sweat because you are being active even though it may be extremely cold otherwise.
This means you probably don’t want a coat filled with down (goose feathers) which is arguably extremely warm, but will get bulky and gross if it gets too wet and it does not dry quickly. Also, once you start heating up from exertion, you will then be too hot and have no reasonable way too cool down without placing yourself at risk of getting sick from exposure. GoOutdoors.com suggests man-made, synthetic insulation because it replicates the warming and heating effects of down (without the bulk) while adding superior breathability and circulation of heat with the further benefit of greater mobility and freedom of movement. They go on to list these twelve essentials when choosing your perfect ski jacket, so make sure it has: • DWR (Durable Water Repellent) which is very similar to Teflon in that is wicks away the water and allows it to bead rather than soak into the fabric. You can also buy it separately and reapply (about once a year) so that your coat will always be protected. • GORE-Tex™ membrane coating is pretty expensive and may not be appropriate for you if you are not going to be an avid winter outdoorswoman, but it is extremely waterproof and breathable, so if you are going to be out a lot, this may be the option for you. • Sealed Seams indicate that your coat has been specifically designed for the cold and wet, that it is appropriately weatherproof. • Articulated Sleeves (you want to be able to move freely when you are enjoying the outdoors) • Venting allows you to stay comfortable by releasing built up moisture when needed through pit zips and deep chest zips. You are also less likely to knock over your friends from BO when you unzip your jacket if you use them! • Snow Skirt acts as a barrier by covering the lower area of the jacket and preventing snow from crawling up your back. • Hood (make sure it’s “Helmet Compatible”!) and you may want it to have a different heat rating than your jacket. For example, your jacket may have a rating of 100g in the body, 60g in the hood (which is higher per square inch of space) so that you stay plenty warm. Most body heat escapes through
the head! Also, get one with a toggle system so that it’s easy to secure without having to take off your gloves. • Adjustable Hem/Cuffs lets you seal out the weather and wet • Zipped Pockets (I don’t think you want to carry your purse while swooshing down the mountain) • Deep Zips in the chest release heat without slowing you down • Flexible Sleeves (roll those babies up when you get too hot while keeping your head and chest protected against the wet and cold!) • Removable Insulation (this is essential if you live someplace with crazy weather changes) such as zip out fleece liners will allow you to layer and unlayer quickly depending on your weather. Cont...

POLY/DOWN
This is actually two different kinds of coats, but since they have a very similar look we thought we’d better explain a little more. As explained in the ski jacket section, down is extremely warm and it has a rather distinctive look. As a kid, we called them the marshmallow coats because they are so puffy. There are some major differences between going organic and the synthetic version. For one, synthetic coats will lose much of its warmth over 5 to 7 years while a down jacket (with equal care) will retain its warmth for 10 to 20 years. Down will also compress better and regain its shape more quickly and it is generally lighter than its synthetic counterpart. However, if you live in a wet climate where you experience a lot of sleet or freezing rain in addition to your snow, down when it gets wet loses its ‘loft’, that fluffy feeling is what keeps you warm. It then gets clumpy and takes forever to dry out again, so you will also stay cold until it gets completely dry. Let’s throw a third option into this mix. Technology is pretty cool. There is now Hydrophobic Down. I know, right! This stuff helps battle down’s kryptonite, moisture, by coating the down in nano-technology. This technology is supposed to help keep the down from absorbing the moisture (or at least postpone it) and help it dry faster. It’s not readily available on the market yet, but is definitely something that all the down coat gurus are watching with extreme interest! There are two primary methods of construction in poly/down coats: 1. Sewn Through (which is most common) 2. Box Baffling (which is the best method for optimizing the loft – keeping you warmer) A key to your poly/down coat is going to be its outer shell because they have different durability’s, different warmth ratings, and ability to protect the down from the elements (tighter weave = greater water resistance). So, depending on what 30 FASHIONAFFAIRMAGAZINE.COM

you are using your jacket for (are you winter camping on the side of the mountain or are you trying to walk to work in a snow storm?), you will want to question not only the fabric but also the thickness (thickness usually directly corresponds to how warm the coat is). Maybe you can get a thinner coat as long as it has box baffling if you simply want to use it as a daily coat in a really cold climate! Some of our favorite down jackets include: • Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer (silver - www.backcountry.com) • Eddie Bauer’s Lodge Down Parka • Canada Goose Hybridge Lite Hoody And if you’d rather go synthetic, try… • Marmot’s Backstage Jacket • Columbia’s Whirlibird Interchange Jacket • Nau’s Urbane Jacket (black - www.moosejaw.com)
WOOL
This is a classic for a reason. From suits to sailors, wool has been a go-to fabric for thousands of years. It can be woven in such a light weight that it is appropriate for summer and be made so heavy so as to endure the worst cold. Since we’re shopping for winter, though, we’re going to focus on the cold! What makes wool so special is the lanolin that it contains naturally, which helps it to be water resistant. Now, if you live in a really wet climate, wool may not be for you because if it does become saturated, it becomes very heavy and takes forever to dry out. However, for your average snow or rain, getting to and from your car to home to office to shopping, you may find that you really enjoy the warmth, durability, and inherent sense of class that wool implies. The most common style of wool jacket is called the pea coat –a style made popular by sailors with its thick collar and double breast boxy
cut that fits over the waist. We’ve come a long way from those, though, with coats now featuring slim cuts and fitted waists for women while keeping that same timeless style. For ladies, they are often longer as well, coming down to the knee and are most usually belted (either tie or buckle). The key to finding a great wool coat is not only its weave (remember, the tighter the construction, the more water resistant and weather proof it is), but also what it’s mixed with and lined with. Many wool coats are no longer pure wool but are some kind of blend – polyester, cotton, silk, or cashmere – so it’s important to make sure you know exactly what you are getting. If the coat is mixed with silk or cashmere (which is simply another kind of wool product from goats rather than sheep and is super soft!), then your quality is still high as is the coats ability to resist water and cold. A coat mixed with silk or cashmere may also be less irritating against your skin. If the coat is mixed with polyester or some other kind of synthetic fabric, you water and weather resistance is still in place, but the quality is not as high and the coat will not be as warm. However, if the coat is mixed with cotton, cotton soaks in the water, nor is it as warm, so the overall quality of the coat is lowered. Lining inside the coat is just as critical. Some winter weight coats have gone to removable liners for extra warmth, so depending on your climate, this may suit you best. If you are more of a traditionalist, you’ll want a coat lined with at least rayon to help keep down any skin irritation you might be prone to from the wool, but silk is really best as it is breathable and weather resistant. A good wool coat is truly an investment, so inquire about tailoring to ensure that your coat fits you exactly the way you want it. With proper care, you could hand this coat down to your great-grandchildren. I still have the wool “car-coat” that was worn by my father’s great-aunt when she would tool around Chicago in her Model-T! The only thing that could use some restoration is the velvet collar! Our favorite wool coats this year: • Annaleigh Loro Piana Wool (left/ivory - www.overland.com) • Belinda Alpaca-Blend Wool (3/4 Trench) • Fidelity Sportswear Short Peacoat
ALL WEATHER
Could the description be a little more vague? Sure it could! They are also called “all-season” coats! These jackets are generally layered with some kind of insulated liner that will zip out of a waterproof shell. Like ski jackets, many will have sealed seams and are specially treated to repel moisture.
They come in a variety of styles from hoodies to trenchcoats and everything in between. You may want one of these if your climate is not prone to truly heavy snow or deep cold snaps as they aren’t generally as warm by themselves as some of your other choices. However, as a layering option, it is ideal! Some technologies to look for in an ideal coat is finding waterproof, yet breathable fabric. Gore-Tex™ is the most wellknown and widely used, but there are others. Eastern Mountain Sports uses System Three, Marmot developed PreCip and MemBrain, and The North Face created HyVent. Coats made with these kinds of technologies will keep you dry while not suffocating you in your own sweat if you’re exerting yourself through a hike or if the day begins to warm up. Given that this is winter shopping, find a jacket with a hard shell, rather than soft shell. A soft shell jacket is not waterproof. It’s water resistant, but not waterproof, so be aware of the difference if you ask a clerk for help. A key sign is the hard shell fabric should have a sheen to it and feel smooth to your touch while a soft shell will have a texture and the dullness of a traditional woven fabric (think sweatshirt). Our favorite all weather coats include: • Sprayway Enigma TL Gore-Tex Jacket • LL Bean’s All-Weather Commuter Coat (above/black - www.llbean.com) • ZeroXposur’s 3-in-1 Hooded System Jacket
CHEAT SHEET
When you go to purchase your coat, remember a few essential things. First, research the manufacturers of the kind of coat you think you want to buy. Look up customer ratings. Make sure they are still in business. Even if you find them in a store, if the company is going under, this may say something about their business practices and product… like maybe it’s not really as good as they say it is! Second, wear what you are most likely going to wear when you will wear the coat. If you go to the store in your bulkiest sweater, but want a coat you know that you will only have on when you are dressed for work, then the coat isn’t going to fit you the way you want. You won’t have an accurate sense of how you will feel when wearing it. Take a friend and take a picture of you in it, as well, because you see yourself differently in a picture than you do when looking at yourself in the mirror. Third, don’t buy it the same day. Most stores have a 24-hour hold policy. Ask them if they will hold it for you so you can think about it. A really good coat is going to cost anywhere from a couple hundred to several thousand dollars. It’s worth the wait. If they won’t hold it, ask about their layaway plan. It’s totally worth losing a few dollars (comparatively) than buying a coat you may wind up hating. This is a long term investment (remember reading that a synthetic ski coat could last 5-7 years, a down coat 10-20, and I have my great-great aunt’s 100-year old wool coat?) so it is wise to go back after you’ve slept on it. * If you order online, make sure you understand the vendor’s return policy. This can sometimes get tricky with clothing items, so thoroughly read all of their disclaimers! And, finally, never settle. Don’t buy something because you are sick of looking. There are quite literally hundreds of styles in every material imaginable so the perfect coat is out there, just waiting for you to snatch it up! This is your winter statement to the world. Make sure the world hears you correctly! 2015JAN | FASHIONAFFAIRMAGAZINE.COM

Jala’s logo, the lotus flower, symbolizes infinite possibilities within oneself and the potential to connect to a higher consciousness. Jala’s soft buttery fabrics, comfortable flowing styles and positive designs fuse mindfulness, yoga and fashion. Jala Clothing is committed to following ethical and responsible business practices and manufacturing. Jala seeks out suppliers that conserve resources and manufacture locally, and ethically by local California family-owned businesses. At Jala, the term “seva” holds a special meaning. It is one of the simplest, yet most profound and life changing ways that they can put spiritual knowledge into action. Seva means “How may I serve you?” or “Can I help you?” At Jala, they believe in giving back through charitable services and free community yoga classes at their local store in Redondo Beach, CA. In addition Jala partnered with Yoga Gives Back. ou are just in time for the rebirth of cool. We are referring to hotel SIXTY LES, of course, which oozes coolness right out of the gate and still resonates as the ideal anchor for the adventure seeker wanting to explore the mysterious and gritty neighborhoods of the Lower East Side.
The Lower East Side is chock full of New York icons and gems galore. Fashion lovers should start on Orchard Street and work their way up. There is something for everyone: A.W. Kaufman boasts European and designer sleepwear, Arivel plays host to the well heeled looking for a deal on winter necessities, and Ethink caters to the preshaving, young & cool crowd.
| travel
SIXTY LES is totally new to us and may be new to you. It’s much more charming than we expected and we were seduced by its streamlined and industrial interior. It’s a luxury hotel, but with soft prices and no snooty doorman to eyeball you in disapproval. And competitive prices mean you have more money for shopping!
The SIXTY LES experience is all about a one-of-a-kind experience with youthful energy. A little treasure tucked away on Allen Street where young professionals, international travelers and out-of-state visitors alike can retreat from the hustle and bustle of Midtown. 2015JAN | FASHIONAFFAIRMAGAZINE.COM

fter checking in to our upscale Studio King, we took a moment to gather our senses at the second floor lounge. Saving room for our fabulous dinner at Del Frisco’s later, we tried our hardest not to look at the alluring fresh, handmade sushi passing us by. The charming, friendly and easy-on-theeyes bartender pulled us right into the japanese tavern bar. Trust me when I tell you that the Blue Ribbon Sushi Izakaya Crunchy Rolls and Yellowtail sushi will make you stay for seconds and change that dinner reservation to later.

n all its boutique wonder, the sleek, upscale feel of the rooms blew us away. We honestly didn’t want to leave. Floor-toceiling windows made us feel one with the city, and the monochromatic room was large by New York standards. With thick, protective walls, we were surrounded by silence. Thankfully, the only sounds we heard from our neighbors was the Do Not Disturb sign being hung on the room door. And with modern bathroom amenities by REN and over-sized bathrobes by Frette, we felt like we were staying on 5th Avenue.

Hidden nooks and crannies for an intimate liaison make for an ideal first-date memory. You will be well lit under colorful tapestries and skylight windows. It’s upscale and casual with eclectic and warm overtones, which is not a scene you’d associate within walking distance of Fifth Avenue. My personal favorite— angry tacos with shrimp paired with chipotle aioli. To die for! The David Burke fabrick experience is colorful and multifarious. It will have you looking at your calendar to lock in on another open date to create memories with cocktails and nosh. 2015JAN | FASHIONAFFAIRMAGAZINE.COM

WHITE
“
... white, although often considered as no color (a theory largely due to the Impressionists, who saw no white in nature), is a symbol of a world from which all color as a definite attribute has disappeared. This world is too far above us for its harmony to touch our souls. A great silence, like an impenetrable wall, shrouds its life from our understanding. White, therefore, has its harmony of silence, which works upon us negatively, like many pauses in music that break temporarily the melody. It is not a dead silence, but one pregnant with possibilities. White has the appeal of the nothingness that is before birth, of the world in the ice age.
”
~ Wassily Kandinsky, Russian Painter and Art Theorist
IS OR IS NOT WHITE A COLOR? Well, let’s get scientific for a minute. Many actually assume that white is an absence of color, perhaps a certain translucence, when in truth white is a mix of all the colors in the light spectrum! Perhaps the best way to explain this is a rainbow. In our daily lives, we are encompassed by white light, meaning that it doesn’t have a particular hue. We only know this when that light refracts on the water causing a rainbow and we see the light spectrum! So, in truth, black is an absence of color while white is mixture of all the colors in the spectrum and all colors are created by light.
Hope I haven’t lost you yet, because this kind of made me go hmm, too. Ready. Set. Go! When you mix the pigments of all three primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) using any liquid paint or coloring you will get black (okay, maybe not jet black, but you see my point) and then technically pure white is an absence of color because you can’t mix pigments to come up with white. Therefore, white is an absence of pigmentation! Still with me? The key to all of this is light. The color of any tangible object originates from the molecular level. The reason you see the red of an apple is because
Mind = Blown 92 FASHIONAFFAIRMAGAZINE.COM
Now it gets tricky. What we just talked about was Additive Color Theory. Now we can dive into what artists refer to as Subtractive Color Theory or Color as Pigment or Molecular Coloring Agents.

it is reflecting at a very specific wavelength of light. But when you see the shiny white spot on it from where the sun or bulb hits it a little more directly, that’s because the light is catching more wavelengths of color and all your human eye can see is the white and not all the tiny reflections of the other wavelengths!
MEANING OF WHITE In advertising, white is associated with cool and cleanliness and often used for high-tech and medical products and organizations. It is also used with lowweight, low-fat food, and dairy products. Companies use it because it connotes safety and a successful beginning.
White for purity. In many cultures, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and white robes and garments are worn to convey spiritual and/or sexual purity. On a truly white garment, even the tiniest bit of dye or dirt would destroy the color, so this makes sense in a symbolic nature. HISTORY OF WHITE PIGMENTATION In pre-historic times, lime powder and gesso were what our ancestors used in order to make a ‘white pigment’. However, it was ancient Greece that discovered lead white (yes, remember the dangers you’ve heard about lead paint, it’s been around that
long) that would make such an impact on Western art. It wasn’t until the 20th century that zinc white and titanium white came into existence. Titanium white’s excellent qualities quickly replaced almost all other forms of pigmentation in both art and industry.

WEARING WHITE IN WINTER
Ralph Lauren 2015 A/W Collection

JAN2015
I’m sure you’ve heard the old axiom “Never wear white after Labor Day”. Did you ever wonder where that came from? There is a theory that it came about during the late 1800s/early 1900s from the wives of the super-rich who weren’t too fond of the newly monied rich and were looking for ways to exclude them. They wanted to know who was socially acceptable and who was not based upon how they dressed. Wearing white during the summer months, when it was so hot was perfectly acceptable, but when Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894 it became a natural end to summer and its fashions. White became the color of weddings and resort-wear, not for dinner parties in the fall and winter.
By the 1950s, most women’s magazines made it clear that white was for between Memorial Day and Labor Day! Some bucked the trend, like Coco Chanel who wore white year round, but this didn’t even exist until a hundred years ago. Fashion rules have become more lax. Now designers like Ralph Lauren and Christian Dior are specifically creating white looks for their fall and winter lines that are just yummy!
Christian Dior 2015 A/W Collection
“Women think of all colors except the absence of color. I have said that black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony.”

John Pham combined his passion, vision, and expertise of the modeling industry to pave the way for the next wave of talent. As founder and CEO of ModXchange.com, a networking website for models, John encourages and facilitates aspiring individuals to make rewarding and career-enhancing connections. Since the inception of the website three years ago, John’s vision has come to life with a large and diverse following of individuals sharing a common passion. In addition to showcasing their portfolios, ModXchange notifies interested users about casting calls and job opportunities, while also accompanying each account with a blogging feature. Users may post their pictures and embed videos right on the page. The platform is a great avenue to help these new talent gain the exposure they need. And to top it all off, ModXchange.com is not just for models. The site presents networking opportunities and job postings for actors, writers, makeup artists, photographers, and others in the fashion industry. ModXchange has become the prototype for creative professionals in expressing and sharing their ideas. Even with this proven success, John has not allowed it lead to complacency. He has evolved the website time and time again, making improvements to design, interface, security features, and many other aspects that are valued by its users. Perhaps the success of his website stems from the same passion and work ethic he infused into his modeling career. Reef’s thirty year heritage traces back to two brothers from Argentina, Fernando and Santiago “Santi” Aguerre. Fueled by their passion for surfing, and armed with a unique entrepreneurial spirit, the brothers acted on an idea to create a high quality, comfortable, active lifestyle sandal. Attracted to the Southern California lifestyle, Santi moved to California in the early 80’s and would shortly be reunited with his brother. Fernando graduated from Law School, and headed to La Jolla to help co-found Reef. With $4000 working capital, hard work, dedication and some savvy marketing ideas, the brothers built Reef into the #1 sandal brand. Fernando and Santiago knew they had a great product, but they wanted to separate themselves from the other surf companies. Inspired by the notoriously beautiful women of the beaches in South America, the brothers saw an opportunity to introduce the surf market to an exotic element that they called Miss Reef. Never revealing her face or identity, the brothers used the intrigue of Miss Reef to help convey their idea of the surf lifestyle. The first advertisement involving Miss Reef was rejected from the surfing magazines for the controversial content, but after some convincing, the ads finally ran. The surfers who read the magazines were instantly intrigued by the exotic and beautiful figure in the ads. Since then, Miss Reef has become a global icon of the surfing community. She has remained an integral component of Reef’s DNA, and can easily be attributed to the success of Reef. 114 FASHIONAFFAIRMAGAZINE.COM
