The Industrial Revolution in Britain and Southern Africa from 1860 Question 2: [15] Read Source A and answer the questions which follow. Source A Speech made in Parliament by Lord Byron, 1812. From: http://spartacus-educational.com/PRluddites.htm [Accessed: 22/05/2014] (The words in italics have been added to the source to help you understand the meaning of the rather old-fashioned language!) During the short time I recently passed in Nottingham, not twelve hours elapsed (passed) without some fresh act of violence; and on that day I left the county, I was informed that forty Frames had been broken the preceding evening, as usual, without resistance and without detection (without anyone noticing). Such was the state of that county, and such I have reason to believe it to be at this moment. But whilst these outrages must be admitted to exist to an alarming extent, it cannot be denied that they have arisen from circumstances of the most unparalleled distress (acts of violence are happening but these have been caused by miserable circumstances): the perseverance of these miserable men in their proceedings, tends to prove that nothing but absolute want could have driven a large, and once honest and industrious, body of the people, into the commission of excesses so hazardous to themselves, their families, and the community (The fact that the oncehonest men keep doing this proves that they have been driven into this behaviour by ďŹ nding themselves in a state of desperate need). a. Is Source A a primary or a secondary source? Give a reason for your answer.
(2x2=4)
b. What had Lord Byron seen in his visit to Nottingham?
(1x2=2)
c. According to Lord Byron, what has caused the situation in Nottingham?
(1x2=2)
