QUESTION OF THE WEEK JULY 3 In last week's answers to the Question of The Week, Steve Dainard wrote... "Other performance events are well supported and their participation rates are off the radar screen. Why? They are fun! People go to these events and experience the sense of community and camaraderie that many in conformation liken to the “old days”. The bottom line is we need to do something to engage people and bring them back to the sport, we must give them a reason to spend their hard earned dollars on a Sport that is fun, challenging and rewarding. Do you believe we can bring the "fun" and people back into the conformation ring? Jim Reynolds
Breeder/Owner/Exhibitor/Judge
I hate to be a naysayer, but I think it would be very difficult to return to the past. In the Ottawa area when I began, a big entry was 250 dogs much like today but there were only 6 sets of shows (2 days each). The adventurous might go as far as Kingston one weekend or Montreal for 2 weekends. The handlers who came were Lorna Jackson, the Fitzgerald’s and maybe Walter Martin. My point is that mainly owners got together a few times a year and so there was the sense of community meeting occasionally, not almost every day as is the case today where even good company like good fish can begin to stink after a few days. Show organizers themselves were true members from the beginning with the entries coming in, a group meeting at the secretary's home to process them, to each and every other part of the show. There was a sense of community and that is where the "fun" comes from. That like so many other things has changed because of the plethora of shows and the business model--poor as it won't let us go back. I judged in California a few weekends ago at Woofstock. It is a fun weekend with a huge entry and great fun and costumes but the result of a tireless group of committee members, driven by a committed cluster chairman and almost as much time focused on everyone having fun as on the mechanics of a show. It is unique and unique cannot happen often. Brian Taylor
Breeder/Owner/Professional Handler/Judge
Thanks for asking me to comment on the question of how to bring fun and people back to the conformation ring.
I am not sure other performance events are overflowing especially Obedience, the second point is that the CKC is not responsible for the demise of dog shows other than their eternal raising of fees. These increases are primarily due to the lack of computer programs to record results hence the need for a disproportionate number of employees. No viable business can really succeed when close to 50% of its income is spent on HR!! The clubs have the main task of increasing entries and giving people a good reason to justify spending their dwindling financial resources on Conformation Shows. This is not the function of the CKC although they can help in legislating new ideas. Some clubs do a fantastic job on attracting entries usually by hosting a lot of Specialty Shows in conjunction with their regular shows. A case in point is Erie Shores, which year by year is growing by leaps and bounds. This year one of the days the entry with specialties was about 900. Build it and they will come. After show events such as seminars and barbecues can and do promote camaraderie but the enthusiasm and commitment must come from the club members, here in lies part of the problem as most clubs have a dwindling and aging membership. Thought should be given to membership growth especially in the junior area. Judging panels are paramount to good entries and most judges would be more than happy to participate in after show events. One area I feel would be very useful is for a judge to be available after the show for question and answer period, which if moderated properly could be very useful to newcomers and veterans alike. I am sure with our economy on the rise albeit slowly, the dog show game can once again see some regrowth and survive. Breeders could also encourage and help newcomers. Clubs could have Ambassadors on hand to help not only new exhibitors but also spectators to understand the nuances and ins and outs of dog shows and purebred dogs. Paper handouts would also help to give people something to take away. This survival and growth is totally in the hands of the clubs and their membership and a few good deeds, and a lot of encouragement will go a long way in our quest for increased entries and a return to a little more fun and enjoyment. I hope the above will give some food for thought. Sheila & Bob Verhulst
Breeder/Owner/Exhibitor/ Judges
My answer is yes, BUT first we have to BRING BACK SPORTMANSHIP!!! If you are outside the ring just listening to people that do not win, Comments are made about the judge and how they do not like the dog that went up. Comments like “pet stock and things like that MUST STOP. A person cannot win all the time that is a dog show. The Novice person hears this kind of talk and it turns them away. Yes years ago the shows were fun, Not know. I have pictures of a crowd at the end of the day for Best in Show. Not now.
We have to welcome the new novice person, talk to them and encourage them to show and join a club and step up and be mentors. Lisa Mayes
Breeder/Owner/Exhibitor
Yes, I do believe that we can. I was away for 20 years + years to raise my family but found myself longing to get back in the conformation ring. Find peers who share the same enjoyment and excitement of a show weekend. Sharing travel, social evenings or exhibitor activities hosted by the club creates a great environment for people to get to know one another. Life has become so busy that some would rather spend their time with electronics (iPads, texting, E-readers) or leave the show after their ring time than converse with a fellow exhibitor. Some may find enjoyment by encouraging new exhibitors, becoming a mentor or taking time to share with the general public who may be interested in our breed. We also need celebrate our fellow exhibitors achievements along with our own. Robert Whitney Handler/Judge
Breeder/Owner/Exhibitor/Professional
Unfortunately people today have many ways to spend their disposable income and I have grave concern as to whether we can increase participation. Many exhibitors today have lost the meaning or what purpose dog shows serve. They are mainly concerned about ribbons, and win, win, win… The minute they’ve lost they are out the door. I’m a highly competitive person whether it’s a dog show or tiddly winks but ever since my first day at a dog show I’ve been intrigued by the exhibiting, the discussions with fellow breeders about our dogs and mostly what can I learn about this great game we call a dog show. True dog people will get to the dog show as soon as they can make it there and stay until the last dog has circled the ring. It’s not these people that we are losing from the dog show world. Somehow we have to encourage and develop the newcomers instead of thinking, good, another rookie to beat. Regarding having fun at a show, I think that depends highly on the show giving club. These clubs foremost have to consider the exhibitors as their guests and must treat them accordingly much like guests they might invite to their homes. An atmosphere of open arms must be attained in my mind. Does the club try new ideas, do they give careful consideration to their judging panels, are they prepared to make their show a must enter show. Do the club members ever thank exhibitors for coming instead of screaming at them to move their dog crates.
I’m fortunate to belong to a breed that has people that are as interested in who the sire or dam are of your dog as what the dog has won. They get together at specific shows, show their dogs, congratulate the winners and then have lunch as a group. They make their own fun. At one time many exhibitors with a particular breed always set up together in the grooming area. How often does that happen now? We have come to a catch 22 in the evolution of dog shows. Is it time for the kennel club to seriously consider decreasing the number of shows? Has the product been watered down to the degree that it’s beating itself up? In my home province of Ontario there are sometimes 3 shows on the same weekend within the province. This is truly absurd in my opinion. Maybe it’s time to set a certain number of shows per year and just have a lottery. For every show held I’m sure there are as many people sitting at home as there are at the show because they have the luxury of picking and choosing what show to attend. I truly believe less shows will make for bigger entries.
Thank you to all of this week’s responders!
