Portofino is more than a place. More than a word. Portofino is a unique “thing”: it’s history, legend and present. An amazing marina, the most exclusive of whole Europe, where the Monte plunges into the sea and, in between, flows the most authentic Italian Dolce Vita. ...The Dolce Vita of the aristocratic parties, captains of industry, artists, stylists, journalist, innovators and actors, who decade after decade praise the beauty of this coast town with their discreet presence, arriving from the sea or the land, to find regeneration and pleasantness. “I found my love in Portofino.”...It’s easy, like Fred Buscaglione used to sing, to fall in love with this inlet. Being part of it for real is a privilege granted just to very few people: the town residents (seafaring people, restaurant owners, and shop keepers), or the eminent people (according to etymology: that stand out) who spend their time here. People who do not like the massive worldliness and exhibitionism confusion and who choose to live to the full every single moment of their life.

Part and parcel of this unbelievable scenery is The Portofino Yacht Club, a strongly developing reality and a point of reference for those who love sea life and this little wonder overlooking the Ligurian Sea: the club members, the VIPs arriving on their yachts, the fellows that will spend time at the club and follow the YCP activities with passion. These pages you are reading disclose the release of the Portofino Yacht Club official magazine: an issue for a selected public, that I’m honoured to edit, thanks to the long-standing trust that the Club grants me, and to realise along with the Bespoke/Dry Media friends, real specialists in offering well-advised, international, and highquality publishing products, where images and words are used in a reasoned way. Histories of excellence, an extremely valuable product, to read and treasure, anticipated by these pages that we are glad to offer you already from today. YACHT CLUB PORTOFINO Some time ago, Tim Thomas, head editor of Boat International, wrote an article in the Forbs, “Where billionaires choose to dock: the most exclusive ports in the world”. Number 1 choice? It is, beyond doubt, the exclusive marina of Portofino, gem of the Mediterranean Sea. “Once it was a small fishermen village – explains Thomas – and there’s only one road to enter and exit the town, which, by the by, is usually closed, letting the area remain unspoiled. It is likely one of the most beautiful ports, out there: the Marina of Portofino is a place only rich people can afford. It has just 14 moorings, with the maximum level of privacy, so that’s why the marina is so exclusive. If you manage to get a mooring, your neighbour will be an artist of the likes of Steven Spielberg (owner of the Seven Seas yacht), the Coldplay front man Chris Martin, the pop singer Rihanna. It is also one of the favourite destinations of the Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko, owner of the 119 metres A super yacht designed by Philippe Starck”. In this paradise, so beloved by Vogue’s editor-in-chief and many more, the representative for those who arrive on a boat is Giovanni Copello of the Portofino Yacht Club, talented photographer, friend of very important personalities. “My dream is to create the best Yacht Club in Italy and to share it. An idea taking shape step by step, for an area with high tourism potential. “To boost the process, the brand owning corporation is experiencing significant developments: agreements to get new areas, with new participants, and by 2016 our dedicated issue, edited by journalist Valerio Venturi, will be launched”. “Here - continues Copello - hundreds of yachts arrive every summer and we need to be ready to offer many different services: it’s only us who decide who can enter and in addition to the guarantee offered by a shipping agency - which is responsible for bureaucracy, port authorities, customs, fiscal police issues and solves any possible boats’ problems - we can benefit from our Yacht Club beauty and services.” A high level business that took its first steps in the early 2000s. “My family - continues Copello - is active in the Portofino Yacht Club since ten years. In 2009 started the process that has turned it into something more than a shipping agency, with a different significance. We did a marketing exercise, counting on the brand’s strength, and improved our activities, also thanks to a sponsor that supported us - Robe di Kappa - and a ship that competed in regattas all over the world and shot some spots in Portofino. YCP SPORT YCP Sports Portofino Yacht Club is the protagonist of some excellent endeavours. Various Ycp branded ships took part in very important regattas all over the world, proudly carrying the Genoese marina’s name in the most prestigious places. In 2016? “We are with Ohana and Parsifal 3 in the Caribbean, again for the Bucket”, goes on explaining Giovanni Copello. In addition to the sea sports events, Ycp has also important connections with winter sports ski resorts, in order to offer the best innovative services. For the winter Club guests, in cooperation with Robe di Kappa Ycp partner for 2015, and present with us at Cvstos, Cuvee Carbon, Neon, L4k3, Sky Shot Portofino - it is in fact possible to practice snowboarding and skiing in Prato Nevoso - a winter resort in Piedmont - and from this year on also in Cervinia, thanks to the partnership with Eliair Monaco, at the Cervino Ski Paradise. The direct link between the marina to the glacier of Cervinia and zermatt allows to ski also during the summer, at an altitude of four thousand metres.

“...And here it is, suddenly, a gorge bidden away, filled with olive and chestnut trees. A tiny village, Portofino, spreads itself crescent-shaped about this quiet basin. We sail slowly through the narrow strait which joints this delightful natural harbor to the sea, and we enter the amphitheatre of houses, crowned by a forest of a refreshing, strong green hue, both being reflected in the quiet mirror of the sea, where a few fishing smacks seem to be dozing”. Guy de Maupassant was blown away by the beauty of Portofino, from the magical peace of the gem of the Tigullio Gulf. Also the French writer was among the many lovers of the village. Because the relationship between famous personalities and the navy of the Genoa district is very intense, since time immemorial. What is that conquers the heart of somebody who’s accustomed to the best things, success, and beauty? Maybe the unique nature of this small town, secluded but everted, at the same time.
A legacy made of refined glamour, class and aristocracy, that still characterizes Portofino and its legend The Romans used to call it Portus Delphini. Here, where the cetaceans used to swim, ended up Richard the Lionheart (according to the legend, he sojourned here for a few days), Pope Gregory XI and also Guglielmo Marconi, the inventor of the radio. An important heritage, which enhanced significantly in the XX century: Sir Winston Churchill, Rainier and Grace of Monaco chose Portofino as their most loved “getaway spot”. Then came the movie stars, who during their European journeys loved to sojourn there, almost undisturbed. American stars of the prosperous Hollywood film industry, European actors and singers popular all over the world: everybody ended up at the Piazzetta. The name list is impressive: Rex Harrison, Rita Hayworth, Liz Taylor, Richard Burton, Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, Ava Gardner, Vittorio Gassman, Marcello Mastroianni, Liza Minnelli, Alain Delon... Starting from the 1950’s, the number of celebrities who came to visit the more and more famous village, praised by Maupassant and sung by Fred Buscaglione during the Italian reconstruction golden years, keeps rising. The tributes from the masters of cinema and fashion increase exponentially with movies and photo sessions shot ad hoc at the Genoese small port. A crowd of Masters of style who delivers an important heritage to the present: a legacy made of refined glamour, class and aristocracy, that still characterizes Portofino and its legend. 16

It doesn’t seem strange, considering that Portofino remains loyal to its noble past and aesthetically it is intact and “clean”. The best location for those who arrive in their yachts (very few, much sought-after, available spots), exactly in front of the YCP club house, that welcomes these personalities with care and cordiality. A perfect place to narrate about: in the 1990’s, they shot a lot of films here, such as “Enchanted April” - directed by Mike Newell starring Miranda Richardson, or “Beyond the Clouds” by Michelangelo Antonioni and Wim Wenders, starring John Malkovich and Sophie Marceau. Here were also filmed some episodes from the soap opera “The Bold and the Beautiful” and some scenes from “The Wolf of Wall Street“ by Martin Scorsese. Moreover, Pixar paid a tribute to the Riviera town in the cartoon “Cars 2”. It’s not a coincidence that a “Portofino” has been reproduced in the United States at Portofino Bay Resort of the Universal Studios of Orlando, Florida. Are we in Italy? Europe? America? Portofino is the whole world. The beau monde. A unique gem loved by the glamorous people of today. 22

The exclusive nature of Portofino is still intact, its unique features keep seducing jet set stars, managers, innovators and artists. The Piazzetta is still the centre of the world, the Terrazza overlooking the sea, just to contemplate it, or to join with the VIPs. As a matter of fact, this is the seaside vacation spot most loved by celebrities in the world. Dolce & Gabbana own a house here and Leonardo Di Caprio is an habituĂŠ. The local people remember the landing of the yacht of Steve Jobs, the Apple guru, and the strolls of Robert De Niro, George Clooney, Madonna, Peter Gabriel, Denzel Washington, Ringo Starr, Barbra Streisand, Rod Stewart, and the artist Mimmo Cascella. Alas this dream cast was brought together only briefly for a commercial promoting watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen’s Portofino Midsize models. Filmed in black and white by Peter Lindbergh and Stephen Kidd, the movie stars, all dressed in elegant black tuxedos, are shown in relaxed settings around the picturesque Italian harbor town of Portofino where they stroll through the garden of La Cervara, an ancient abbey; chat over an espresso and enjoy a Riva boat ride, a group of old friends enjoying la dolce vita.

While in wintertime I don’t mind traveling a bitfurther in my quest for eternal sunshine, in the summer months I prefer to stick my favorite European haunts. Nothing counter-balances my 80-hour work weeks better than the occasional weekend at the beach, recharging my batteries for new challenges ahead. At home in Monaco, the Monte Carlo Beach Hoteland the Monaco Beach Club cannot be beaten as far as good oldfashioned pedigree, glamour and luxury are concerned. However, if I am in the mood for a more casual beach experience, Miami Plage offers a nice, relaxed ambiance and serve sthe best wood-oven pizzas of the Principality which I have to eat at least once a month to satisfy my cravings for carbs. No trip to SaintTropez is complete for me without a day at the legendary Plage 55. While other beaches may attract headlines with champagne showers and a plethora of visiting personalities, Plage 55 (the‘Cinquante - Cinq’) has been a haven of peace for a more discreet elite since the 1950s. Lunch is simple and delicious, the service are freshingly down-to-earth and the ambiance refined yet completely relaxed. And, best of all, I can bring my beloved dog Bertie... Portofino is only a couple of hours away from Monaco by boat or Bentley and always offers a refreshing change of scenery. YCP MAGAZINE

Staying and relaxing at the legendary Hotel Splendido with its impeccable service and breath taking views, nothing is nicer than towander around the port promenade in the evening, do a little cashmere shopping at Loro Piana and have a Campari - Orange at one of themany bars, followed by a cozy dinner at ‘Da Puny’in the harbor square. Finally, if I want to travel a little further, Capri still has a magical feel forme. With its unique open taxis, small winding roads, beautiful coastline and charming towns, it remains one of the most special places on earth. Staying either at the legendary Capri Palace or the more designed JK Place, a Capri must is dinner at ‘Da Paolino’ where traditional Capricuisine is served under more than 100 fragrant lemon trees - it does not get any more romantic than that! Just a couple of days in any of these locations is enough for me to enjoy the change of scenery, clear my head and get re-energized for new ventures.

A VIEW FROM BAR Memories, anecdotes and perspectives from the seaside village, in the words of Andrea Benetti Written by Irene Galiano
“I had to stay in Portofino for a little while and instead have been here since ‘72.” Andrea Benetti is the owner of the American Bar Jolly, known as “Lo Scafandro” (“The Diving Bell”). One of the historical sites of Portofino, where the years have gone by: John Wayne, Rex Harrison, Silvio Berlusconi... It is a privileged vantage point from which to tell the stories of the marina, its myths and the evolution over time. “I’ve been here since ‘72, explains Benetti, but this is a historical activity, such as Gritta, and it’s been open since the ‘60s. It is an American bar, even if this word means nothing, and was invented by Italian barmen and found nowhere else. Let’s say you could call it a luxury bar...” What makes it so special? “The bar is unique. Just think that in ‘63, when the architect Frattini invented this particular design for the place, they spent 84 million lire. At the time it was a folly because with 2 million you could have bought an apartment. It was an exaggerated figure, but they used Cuban wood, copper, brass, slate, all hand-made by craftsmen. Everything is left as it was, and it is definitely something special.” You said that your adventure in Portofino began in ‘72. What’s your story before this? 34

“Yes, I am from Milan. In ‘71 I had completed the season at il Covo di Nord Est (Den of the North East), then they called me for a week at “Lo Scafandro” (The Diving Bell), to cover the “gaps”, and soon I found myself taking it over. I was about to leave for Milan, I called a friend who was at il Covo ( The Den) knowing that I was in love with a girl, who now is my wife, and therefore I could find good reasons to stay in Liguria ...And so this is how it went ...At first it was strange, especially through the winter, which was disconcertingly calm for those who were accustomed to life in Milan. I then entered the lifeblood of the climate and the people, although it is not easy to share things in the beginning with the people of Portofino.” What was Portofino like in those days? “It was beautiful. There were fewer people and the majority was made up of Italians, who maybe did not pay taxes but who invested and wanted to be comfortable. They were 85% of the customers and now it is the opposite: they are all foreigners.” Who came to get a drink from you? “Many characters. In my local I met Berlusconi early in his career: a very funny character, who could tell a humorous tale even before getting into politics; then Pirelli, Ray Charles, Aznavour ... Here, then ‘il Covo’, they all passed by ... It was a slower world, but we talked and we all knew each other. Yesterday, however, there were four “VIPs” sitting at the bar and they did not even talked to each other, they just looked at their mobile phones...” What anecdotes have you collected? “The intelligence of women is special ... At the end of the 70’s I remember a lady whose name you cannot use. She had asked her husband, an important industry character in Milan, for a choker she had seen in Portofino. Her husband paid for it first, then a few days later, her lover. She had an agreement with the merchant who then turned over one of the two checks. She got the necklace and 40 million, YCP MAGAZINE

We have a unique natural environment and village that we must preserve and the lover and husband were both satisfied ... Or Teo Teocoli, leaving people in the middle of the sea ... There was a lot of satisfaction in the 80’s when we organized the worldwide festival for the club of the “leggera” (light), due to the loudmouth who poses as a big billionaire. It was always a party…” And now? “We are open 24 hours a day and I always go to bed at 5am, but undoubtedly much has changed. People come from all over, much more than before and for fewer days. In the months of the high season we are literally invaded, because the boats bring thousands of people to the village. And Portofino has a fragile ecosystem: 450 residents, more or less, inhabit this place...” Do you believe that we should think of something else in the near future? “In my opinion, it is necessary to limit the number that have access, otherwise there are problems for the infrastructure. Imagine that in the early 80’s the mayor at the time undertook a survey to see how many people they could have here without an impact: they said about 20 thousand over the weekend, but now the numbers are much higher... We have a unique natural environment and village that we must preserve and we must communicate better, and for this we need people who know how to manage the development with quality and not quantity. Portofino is a gem, not a resort on the Adriatic Riviera. Limiting the numbers, for me, can help. This will indeed be the case if there is the Inter Milan and everyone wants to come to San Siro.”

LIVIN’ PORTOFINO Where to go, where to buy around the iconic port
Portofino? It’s reinventing itself. It’s reinventing its legend. But there’s no doubt that the small town’s “charisma” is connected to the beauty of the village and its shops, shopping and spare time destination of the most important people on the planet. Since the Marina is an international VIPs “pilgrimage” destination, all major brands decided to get a shop or at least a window in the town to show the best of their production, among via Roma, the square overlooking the small port, and the carrugi (narrow lanes). At the same time, you may also find typical local retail business, not affiliated with big brands, and it is crowded with restaurants, bars, and clubs permanently visited by Portofino’s all-season tourism. What are the big brands that have conquered themselves a place in the iconic Ligurian port? Louis Vuitton, for example, or Loro Piana. Also Giorgio Armani has his monobrand shop, just like Gucci, zegna, Ferragamo, Pucci, Robe di Kappa; while Spinnaker, Orizzonti, and Mingo are typical Ligurian brands: the first one is one of the most important Italian multibrand stores; Orizzonti offers summer apparel and accessories and pottery; Mingo produces exclusive footwear (loved by Gianni Agnelli). And many more. Paolo and Matteo Giovannini promote real local food and wine at their restaurant “I Gemelli” (the twins) and with the products of ‘Vivere Gustando Portofino’ (Living Tasting Portofino). “Il Ristorante da I Gemilli” (the restaurant of the twins) was born three years ago and was the initiative of Paul and Matteo Giovannini. The twins, born in Portofino in 1987, are part of one of the oldest families in the fishing village: the Gazzolo. In fact, the family has been present in the village since 1232 and they’ve operated from the 1800’s in the catering industry. Paul and Matthew represent the 8th generation, of this lineage. The twins took their first steps in their mother Paola’s historical establishment, the bar and ice cream parlor “The Pier”, reports a local historian descended from Marconi, which is today the restaurant “I Gemelli”, where it hosts the traditional cuisine of the Gulf of Tigullio. The restaurant is fully flavored with family and village recipes using only the highest quality fresh fish, caught in the Gulf of Tigullio. It is all presented along with the chance for the customer to eat only one meter from the sea in the beautiful Portofino bay, in order to experience emotions that are only possible in this “pearl of the Mediterranean “. The philosophy and operation of the “Living Gustando Portofino” was born in this historical context: basically a reality based on the transformation of raw materials offered by the mountain of Portofino. The products are unique and special, prepared to be able to appreciate the gifts offered by the Park, the traditions and methods of their ancestors. The intention is to raise awareness in Italy and the rest of the world the true local products: Limoncino traditionally called “Ü Limun of Portofino” is produced by enjoying life using an old family recipe and using only lemons grown on the Portofino peninsula. Even the chocolate liqueur called “ü scüggettü” Portofino is produced by ‘Vivere Gustando Portofino’ using an old family recipe: made with premium choice chocolate coming from South America, it is a sweet liqueur made according to tradition as an alcoholic beverage conjured by expertly blending chocolate, sugar and alcohol. The next release of ‘Vivere Gustando Portofino’ will be a white wine, the famous Ligurian Vermentino, which will be produced ad hoc by the famous Cantine Bosoni (Bosoni Cellars) for ‘Vivere Gustando Portofino’.

Elizabeth sang “A Splendid Birthday!” and it was a journey through history, which brought us back in time. To 115 years ago. It was the inauguration of Belmond Hotel Splendido, hospitality jewel of the Riviera di Levante, and one of the most iconic hotels in the prestigious collection of Belmond Hotels, trains, river cruises and restaurants. It was a dream that was reported by guests of the golden years of the Dolce Vita (Sweet Life). Royalty and celebrities such as Sir Winston Churchill, Rainier and Grace of Monaco, Rita Haywoth, Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall signed the guest book. And, even before the mid-nineteenth century, when this “Hidden cove” of Liguria was more impressive, or as Guy de Maupassant called it Portofino’s La Vie Errante, it attracted English and German aristocrats. More than a century later, we were among the 120 selected guests that came from all over the world to celebrate the anniversary. Doing the honors was Hermes de Megni, general manager of Splendido, elegant in his blue pinstripe, welcoming the guests with his contagious smile and legendary hospitality. It was the time of aperitivo in the piazzetta (little square), facing the Belmond Splendido Mare.

The party had the scent of black and white like Ava Gardner and Vittorio Gassman, previous guests of the hotel, and the flavor of cocktails from the vintage Ferrari Lunelli Brothers Cellars, founded over a century ago, perfect partners for the soirée. Meanwhile, the agile and fast hands of a lace maker, untangling her fingers from her bobbins, according to the ancient tradition. Also displayed: two classic cars of the era, an Aurelia and a Mercedes ‘gullwing’, beautifully showing themselves on center stage. The dream continued on the terrace of the Splendido, which was literally flooded by the scent of jasmine blossoms and lemon, dressed up with 50’s ‘Clothes’, as the 19-course menu, designed by Executive Chef Corrado Corti, was served at the buffet. There was Cappon magro (an elaborate Genoese salad of seafood and vegetables) and a Ligurian salad to begin with and homemade pansoti, trofie di Recco alla Portofina (a Portofino homemade rolled pasta with pesto), mesciua alla spezzina (a legume soup) and risotto alle fragile (a 70’s Italian risotto dish with an unusual twist of summer strawberries) to continue. And then, the branzino del Tigullio al sale (Tigullio sea bass with salt) and frittura mista di pesce del golfo con verdure dell’orto (fried mixed gulf fish with garden vegetables). Rendering an even more magical atmosphere: live theme music, the starry sky and last but not least, a mega birthday cake, made with sponge cake, marzipan and wild strawberries. In the distance, the luxurious yachts in the harbor are watching with envy as this evening on the terrace of the Splendido steals the scene from them. It is then not hard to imagine why Richard Burton declared his love here to the beautiful Elizabeth Taylor. Happy Birthday Beautiful! YCP MAGAZINE

Who doesn’t know The Riva speedboats? The iconics Acquarama, Iseo, Aquariva Super e 63’ Virtus are wonderful, masterpiece of nautical design. The Riva boatyard was established long time ago, in 1842, on Lake Iseo. It was a sudden and devastating storm - which irreversibly damaged the boats of the local fishermen - that persuaded a young shipbuilder and craftsman who had just moved from Laglio, near Como, to perform a true miracle and repair most of the crafts, thus winning the trust of the locals. This was the beginning of the legend of Riva and that of a man, Pietro Riva. This was the place where the first boats signed by Riva were launched and immediately stood out for their unmatched style and personality. Riva rapidly gained great respect and recognition; the boatyard flourished also thanks to the farsightedness of Ernesto Riva, who had succeeded his father Pietro and introduced internal combustion engines on Riva boats. The era of large cargo and passenger boats operating on the lake thus began.
Riva is a icony of made in Italy: style and quality from the past to the future After World War I, Serafino Riva gave Riva products their final imprinting and turned the boatyard’s precious crafts into a real brand, allowing it to take a step into history: production steered from transportation to power boating, which at the time was still dawning. Between the 1920s and the 1930s Riva, through its racing yachts, collected records and victories in national and international competitions. The 1950s were the years of Carlo Riva, who had been driven by boundless passion for boats and the family business since he was a child. Riva had by then everywhere become the synonym of elegance, status and perfection. Selected materials of the highest quality, a painstaking care for the tiniest details, unparalleled, long-standing expertise and craftsmanship. Riva’s creations became the object of desire for the aristocracy, award winning athletes, successful businessmen and movie stars. ...Even today, these jewels preserve intact all the charm of that time, made of paparazzi, movie stars wearing foulards and glamorous sunshades, celebrity love stories, luxury and timeless elegance. In the decade of the Italian industrial revolution, dominated by the myth of speed, l’Ingegnere, as Carlo Riva is called, sensed the importance of this phenomenon and created a series of wooden yachts characterized by unique design features. 58

One of them was the Ariston, of which Carlo Riva says it was “designed with love, born pure and strong like a pedigree horse. Unforgettable! It was my Lord of the Sea”. The Tritone followed (the first two-engine yacht), then the Sebino (which marked the beginning of series production), and then the Florida, whose name evokes the American model that was particularly fashionable in those years. In 1956 Riva started cooperating with designer and architect Giorgio Barilani, whose graphic and design activities for the boating industry were then devoted exclusively to Riva, where Barilani was the design manager between 1970 and 1996. In 1962 the myth was born: it was named Aquarama, the symbol of Riva par excellence, almost “a brand within the brand”. The name of the yacht drew inspiration from the Cinerama system, the American experimental wide screens. The slogan the yacht was launched with contained several key-words: “Sun, sea, joie de vivre!” The year 1969 was another milestone in the history of the legendary brand: it was then that fiberglass production started. The first two Riva models in composite material were born: the day cruiser Bahia Mar 20’ and the cabin cruiser Sport Fisherman 25’. The new material was first accurately studied by purchasing the hull from the Bertram boatyard. The hull was subsequently redesigned and both models were then finished with wood details, in line with Riva’s tradition. Between the 1970s and the 1990s, more yachts were created, including the St. Tropez and the Superamerica, the first large cabin cruiser. In spite of the success met by fiberglass, Riva’s production of wooden runabouts continued until 1996, when the last Aquarama Special (hull number 784) was built. Now? The legend is still in life: Riva offers new products in partnership with Azimut-Ferretti, a giant of yachting. Riva’s models stand out for their clean and essential lines, very elegant and original, for their exclusive design and unique style. This perfect blend of elegance and innovation sets the benchmark in the history of international boating design. The spirit of Pietro Riva, the young boat builder, still lives on.

“People were a lot more relaxed once, there was a lot more ease and less marketing. But the captain’s job is always nice” Gino Battaglia, the director of the Italian Yacht Masters, is a sea captain and the son of a naval engineer, from a Neapolitan family but raised in Liguria, he began working on yachts at 14, and has served on prestigious ships including the Lady Lola, the last refuge of Princess Diana, and taming all the seas of the world . “People were a lot more relaxed once,” he says, “there was a lot more ease and less marketing. But the captain’s job is always nice.” With a love of the craft, yachts that are increasingly sophisticated and beautiful, and with passion for discovery and interaction with people, Battaglia operates with pleasure and is always in great demand. Is there anyone better to ask for cruising advice in the northern Mediterranean? “I have personally organized itineraries for years in the Mediterranean”, he explains. “I prefer Capri, the Costa Smeralda, Corsica and the French Riviera. “ Obviously Portofino is an excellent logistic base or the beginning for a good tour that can also touch other places in Liguria, on the French Riviera ports, Tuscany, Sardinia, with a desire to be “tight”, thinking of a tour of a few days. Here then are some suggestions: On board his own yacht, the itinerary could start with Portofino and predict a turn to the west: past Genova, the city has the largest pedestrian historical center of Europe, interesting museums and the Aquarium. Then run west along the Ligurian Riviera where there is Sanremo, a tourist destination of international fame. Then you can easily push onto Monte Carlo, a glamorous and international destination. From there you can navigate to Saint-Tropez, a fishing village now suited to chic tourism, or make a stop at Villefranche, Beaulieu and Cap-Ferrat, smaller towns but equally fascinating. The Italian company celebrates 70 years of business with icons like Vespa, Ape and others. While waiting for new models, we celebrate the 946, a masterpiece still sought after on the market. There are those who want to bet on steel mills, and those who believe that the future depends on beauty, art and crafts: from fashion to food. In short, bringing forth great, well produced ideas. These innovations have always enchanted foreigners, from Rinascimento (or before) and onwards. An example? The Vespa. A True global icon, and the first in every sense that continues to renew this fame year after year. This year the Piaggio celebrates 70 years. So it’s a good opportunity to rediscover one of the most interesting and sought after models of the brand, on the market: the new 946, the modern reinterpretation of the historical prototype MP6, from which the first model of the motorcycle was derived, the Vespa 98. The first Vespa made its debut on the Italian market in 1946 (hence the name) at a price of 55 thousand lire (approximately 5 and a half months salary for a worker, who on average earned about 10 thousand lire a month).

The new 946, introduced in 2013, is really beautiful. It is streamlined, yet innovatively retro, pointing well to the revisited past. The same logic applies that allowed Fiat to break through with the new 500 after unhappy experiences in the 90’s with an insecure box that had nothing to do with YCP MAGAZINE

the original (aside insecurity). Not that it would take a genius to figure out what would work. So to, the Vespa 946 was a success, and is sought after. The design is successful with top-level components: steel bodies, handlebars, fenders, chrome aluminum panels and do not miss the ABS and LCD instrumentation. The engine? It is third valves, frugal, already used to Lx and S. The heart of the 946 is a single cylinder 4-stroke engine which is air-cooled and powered by electronic injection. It is entirely designed, developed and manufactured in Pontedera, the largest plant of the Piaggio group. The goal of the designers: reducing fuel consumption and emissions by reducing friction and implementing fluid dynamics.

On the road there is great stability. The 946 is very agile and perfect for slalom in traffic. There are also “more perceptible” differences between the Vespa 98, the inspiration, and 946. The first had the typical ‘low lighthouse’ placed on the fender. The 946, however, has the LED headlight put on the handlebar, introduced for the first time in 1953. Needless to say that the brakes are not drum but disk, and it must be added as well that the 946 is mounted with the innovative of Asr traction control, an electronic system that prevents slippage of the rear wheel, avoiding the loss of adhesion and ensuring traction. This unforgettable motoring icon, first led by Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn in William Wyler’s “Roman Holiday” relives this legend. This is a treat for collectors in the renewal of a perfect icon of great Italian innovation. 90

THE SUMMER WINE RACK It’s beautiful weather for a dinner under the stars, on your boat with Ligurian, Sicilian and Trentino’s wines! Written by Dario Venturi
Sunday's sunny summer meadows are as green as the pastures of Trentino. The wines of Termeno and Appiano, in South Tirol, are white with interesting and perfumed outlines, such as those of Liguria. Whites are the ones which inaugurate the spring festivities and celebrate summer. Among the flowering meadows of edelweiss, irises, primroses and poppies, or on the beaches of the Riviera dei Fiori, you can taste the fresh dishes of fish and meat all accompanied by an excellent Riesling Mintligg, for example, or with a Pinot Bianco from the best of the Italian brands. You can eat all the mountain cheeses accompanied by a mighty and tasteful Gewurtztraminer, to a Muller Turgau, a Blauburgunder, a Weissburgunder, along with the classics like Chardonnay and Suavignon. Which brands should you seek? San Michele Appiano, Hofstaettet, Ernste & Neue, these offer many excellent wines from South Tirol, which are produced under the first pale blue sky that sees the Nibelunghi first coming down from the flat Germany. Then there is also the wine from lake Caldaro. The lake, wine, locale, and the first reflections of the water on this side of the Alps make magic. 92
Going further down to the Liguria Sea where respectable noble wines are produced, each to be discovered, they are low production but high quality; the Rossese, loved by Napoleone; the Vermentino and the Pigato of western Liguria; or the big whites of the Lunae territory, near Tuscany. This is where amazing products are made with knowledge. Alternatives? Try the Sicilian and Sardinian wines, which are suitable especially with Mediterranean dishes and are interesting for their perfume and their character. Several varieties are produced, many with great results. In short, spring is renewed when the fine white wines come out, when red wines are tasted together with a barbecue among friends, or even at an important dinner. Next, summer comes along and it is still a very good time to try the excellent Italian specialties in a bottle. Focus on wine from South Tirol, Liguria, and the South of Italy. www.venturiwineshop.it

More or less, everyone in the world knows Italian food, but what about Ligurian versions? “This cuisine,” wrote Louis Inturrisi in the 1990’s in the New York Times “ is largely distinguished from other regional Italian cuisines by the things you expect to find that are missing. How is it possible that the cuisine of a port city, Genoa, that was once queen of the spice trade and a funnel for foods from the New World should be characterized by a lack of fish dishes, a restricted use of spices and a paucity of the revolutionary tomato?” These paradoxes are possible, because it was not the bankers or the spice merchants of Liguria that shaped its cooking, but the sailors! After voyages that lasted for months, they craved fresh vegetables, fruit and aromatic herbs more then fish. And the Ligurian area and interior is very rich, in this sense, offering vegetables, mushrooms and small places for breeding. The most salient feature is aromatic herbs such as basil, laurel, sweet marjoram and fennel and fresh vegtables such as zucchini, eggplant and lettuce. “The sailors’ yearning for the freshness of herbs (the dietitian would say for vitamins) instead of for dried spices”, continues Louis Inturrini, “probably explains the cult of basilico or basil in Liguria and its most famous dish, pesto”.

Pesto is for sure the king of Ligurian specialities: made only with the local basil, a special variety that is normally used for potatoes, green beans and pasta, but also as a flavor for vegetable soup (Minestrone alla Genovese). Probably you’ve already tried it. Focaccia, the typical Ligurian dimpled bread that is lightly coated with olive oil and coarse salt, also with formaggio (cheese), is the other symbol of Ligurian cuisine. It’s perfect for an aperitivo just like the classic Genovese alternative to pizza, ‘la Farinata’, made of chickpea flour, water and oil and spread very thin over a large bronze griddle. The perfect accompaniment is a Ligurian dry white wine, like Pigato or Vermentino. Ravioli, probably invented in Genoa, are typical in this part of Italy. Stuffings include meat (veal), vegetables or fish. A Ligurian variation of ravioli is ‘Pansoti alla Salsa di Noci’, made with ground walnuts, milk-curd cheese or yogurt, olive oil and grated cheese. Around Sanremo, there is borage ravioli, filled with this aromatic herb. Meat dishes? Try ‘Cima alla Genovese’, a breast or shoulder of veal stuffed with a mixture of minced meats, herbs, hardboiled eggs, peas, spinach and pistachios, or capra e fagioli (goat & beans), or wild pork stew. What else? Brandacujun is a typical dish of west Ligurian cuisine made from potatoes and fish stock, and other tidbits, such as the vegetables cakes, stuffed porcini mushrooms or the other dishes with beetroot or artichokes. Dessert? Genoa’s most famous dessert is pan dolce, a Christmas bread made of pine nuts, raisins and candied fruit. It is to be enjoyed even at other times of the Year.
