Head Coach Britne’ Stubbs

Coach Britne’ Stubbs begins her second year as Head Coach of the Lady Tornados softball team. In her first season at the helm of the women’s softball program, Coach Stubbs help guide the team to a 13-27 record on the season, an 11-game improvement from the 2007 season. As provisional members of both the NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference in 2008, the Tornados played a very challenging schedule, taking on a number of strong teams throughout the year. The Tornados had a season-high five-game winning streak in early February, to jump out of the gates with an impressive 5-3 start. The Tornados finished the season on a high-note winning four of their last five games, including a season-ending sweep of Montreat College. Stubbs, who originally hails from Bennettsville, SC, comes to Brevard by way of Tiffin University in Tiffin, OH. At Tiffin, Stubbs served as the assistant softball coach while she completed her master’s degree in business administration. During her two year stint at Tiffin University, the softball program compiled a record of 94-22. Coach Stubbs was a part of two conference AMC championships, two region IX championships and two National Tournament Appearances. Also, Coach Stubbs was a part of two conference coaching staff of the year awards. In 2006, she was a part of Region IX coaching staff of the year. While at Tiffin University, Stubbs helped tutor five All-Americans, six All-Region performers and seven All-Conference Players. Prior to coaching at Tiffin, Stubbs played softball at Queens University located in Charlotte, NC. Stubbs was named to the CVAC All-Conference first team three times and was her team’s Most Valuable Offensive Player three consecutive seasons spanning from 2002-2005. In the 2005, Stubbs was named the Female Athlete of the Year for Queens University. Stubbs remains as the Queens University stolen base recorder holder, when she stole 39 bases in her senior campaign. In 2005 she was nationally ranked 16th in the nation for stolen bases with 39 and 42nd for batting average for all of NCAA Division II. Stubbs has also worked summer camps at Kennesaw State, North Carolina State and Coastal Carolina Universities over the past two summers.

Time to Play Brevard lost four seniors who contributed both on the field and on the mound last season in Kristin Tettemer, Amber Clontz, Lindsey Morgan, and Aimee Rogers, but Coach Britne’ Stubbs is excited as to what this season will bring. Having returned a group that gained valuable experience last year and adding a strong freshmen/transfer class to the mix, the Tornados will be looking to prove the naysayers wrong this year after being picked ninth in the South Atlantic Conference preseason poll. The Tornados will have a pair of juniors taking the mound this season as last season’s ace, Jennifer Gift, will be joined in the rotation by Miami-Dade junior college transfer Liz Houser. Gift started 22 games for the Tornados last season, and made another 10 relief appearances in recording a 4.47 ERA. The junior from Durham, N.C. threw 20 complete games with three shutouts while striking out 121 batters in 161 innings. Houser comes to the Tornados with a career record of 30-7 while pitching for the Lady Sharks. Liz was a first team All-Southern Conference pitcher as a freshman and a second-teamer as a sophomore, and holds single season totals for Miami-Dade with most batters faced in a season (698) and lowest ERA (0.64), as well as the career records for least walks, hits, doubles, triples, and home runs allowed. Likely to see time on the mound if Gift and Houser are unable to go is another junior, Rachel Montgomery. All three pitchers are characterized as movement pitchers who can get opposing teams to put the ball on the ground, taking advantage of one of the biggest strengths of the 2009 team, the infield defense. The infield defense is shored up the middle by the return of Katie Thornburg at second base and Kristina Clayton at shortstop. The duo combined to take part in 37.8 percent of all outs recorded by the Brevard softball team last season, while only making 12 errors. Thornburg was a wall at second base, making only five errors in 144 chances while providing much needed leadership up the middle. As a senior this year, Thornburg will be expected to do that and more as she combines with Clayton (seven errors in 150 chances) to provide the Tornados with a potent double-play combination up the middle. Freshman Becca Curlee, from Eagle River, Alaska will also see some playing time up the middle in the infield. Returner Sarah Carlos will look to share time with Florida Community College transfer Kasey Fagan at first base. Carlos, a sophomore from Eagle River, Alaska, played solid defense on the field, recording 245 outs in 251 chances. Fagan split time with several players last year at first base as a member of the FCCJ women’s softball team, and recorded a .978 fielding percentage (178 chances, 4 errors), while being known for her ability to pick the ball. Jennifer Brown, a junior from Conover, N.C., had a fielding percentage of .707 as she patrolled the hot corner last season. Brown will be backed up by freshman Maddie Fletcher, a freshman who played last season at Providence High School in Charlotte, N.C. Behind the plate is returning catcher Katie Brown and freshman Chelsi Mallory. Brown is coming off a season where she caught 30 percent (12-40) of all runners trying to take a base and will be counted on to calm down the pitching staff when the game gets tight. Mallory will be coming behind the plate on games when Brown needs a break and has already shown the Brevard coaching staff the willingness to work hard to improve on her abilities.

Time to Play (cont.)

Returning in the outfield for the Tornados is senior Beth Brooker. Brooker, a native of Fayetteville, Ga. will be joined by Carlos, Curlee, Mallory and Fletcher, as Coach Stubbs predicts this group will be one of her strongest and fastest units on the team. With the individual speed in the outfield, the team will expect to see fewer balls fall into play and keep the innings shorter for the BC pitching staff. On the offensive side of the diamond, the Tornados return five of their top seven batters from the 2008 campaign. Katie Thornburg was the team leader in batting average, hitting .298 while leading the team in hits (34) and RBIs (16). Kristina Clayton was second on the team, batting .278, while tying for the team lead in stolen bases with 11 steals in 14 attempts. Jennifer Brown was fourth on the team in batting with a .242 average, and tied for the team lead in home runs with two. Sarah Carlos was a point behind, hitting .241 while starting 40 games at first base, leading the team with eight doubles. Katie Brown hit .229, and Beth Brooker hit .188 to round out the returning BC batters. Rachel Montgomery will also see time at the plate as a designated hitter in the 2009 season. Newcomers Kasey Fagan, Becca Curlee, Chelsi Mallory, and Maddie Fletcher are expected to make an immediate impact at the plate for the Tornados. Fagan was 8th in the Mid-Florida Conference in home runs last season with eight and was an All-MFC honorable mention player. Curlee is a versatile line-drive hitter who will use all fields to take advantage of her speed on the bases. Mallory has shown power in her time here at Brevard College and will be looked at to come up with key hits in game situations. Fletcher rounds out the group of newcomers and is known to be a consistent hitter. The Tornados will be looking at a possible combination of Curlee, Clayton or Brooker setting the table at the top of the lineup, with Thornburg, Mallory, Fagan, Katie and Jennifer Brown, and Maddie Fletcher waiting to drive them home. The Tornados look to improve on their 13-27 record from the 2008 season as they embrace their first full season as South Atlantic Conference and NCAA Division II members.

The South Atlantic Conference The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999). The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. Today the conference is a group of nine private, liberal and civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play. In July of 1998, Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league, and Lincoln Memorial University began play in the conference in the 2006-07 academic year. The league membership now includes Brevard College in Brevard, N.C.; Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, TN; Catawba College in Salisbury, NC; Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, NC; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC; Newberry College in Newberry, SC; Tusculum College in Greeneville, TN; and Wingate University in Wingate, NC. 18

We know that we are role models. We respect our teammates, our opponents, our game and those who support it. We strive to create a family-friendly environment during our contests. We seek a partnership with our community.

As Division II student-athletes, we commit to sportsmanship and ethical conduct by demonstrating fair play, responsibility and respect.

A message from the Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee NCAA is a trademark of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
