Coach Brenda Skeffington

Brenda Skeffington begins her eleventh season at Brevard College and has outstanding success during her tenure of 26 years of being a Head Volleyball Coach at the collegiate level with 499 career wins and 434 losses.

Over the past nine years at Brevard, she has taken the Tornados from eighth place in the conference to first place in the Appalachian Athletic Conference with her best season coming in 2005 as she was named AAC Coach of the year with the Tornados finishing 25-6, and has guided the Tornados through the transition into NCAA Division II play, qualifying for the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament in each of the two seasons Brevard has been eligible.

In 2008, she guided Brevard College to a 14-17, 3-13 SAC record as the Tornados made the 2008 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Tournament as the #8 seed before bowing out to regular season champion Wingate. A three-time Brevard College Coach of the year, Skeffington will look to continue the improvement of the entire volleyball program as the Tornados compete in their second season as full members of both the NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference.

Prior to taking over at Brevard, Skeffington coached at The College of Wooster, Robert Morris College (Division I), and St. John Fisher College, respectively. During her time at St. John Fisher, Skeffington recorded her best overall season as a head coach as the Cardinals at 42-3.

In addition to coaching college, Skeffington has been active in directing volleyball camps at Brevard College, Wooster, and at St. John Fisher College. Skeffington has also been a part of several local camps including: Brevard High School, East Henderson High School, Girl Scouts of Asheville, Pisgah High School, Rosman High School and Shelby High School.

Skeffington is CAP II certified as a coach and continues to direct several volleyball camps and Team Camps over the summer.

Assistant Coach Amanda McGowan Amanda McGowan joins the Tornados coaching staff in the fall of 2011, coming on board to help Coach Skeffington with the Brevard College volleyball team. McGowan comes to Brevard after serving the past two years as the coach at Northeast High School in St. Petersburg, Fla. where she led the Vikings to back-to-back District Championships and was elected Head Coach of the Pinellas County All-Star team in 2010. While at Northeast, McGowan was involved in the development and planning of fund raising activities, as well as developing and maintaining relationships with the faculty, staff, players and other personnel. She also was responsible for the complete operation of the Northeast volleyball program, including staff selection and supervision, scheduling, recruiting and academic progress of student-athletes. Prior to Northeast, McGowan served as an assistant volleyball coach at Pensacola/Washington High School where she was responsible for both preseason and season weight training and conditioning programs, as well as individual skill instruction, performance counseling and player-coach relations. Under her tutelage, the Wildcats achieved an #8 ranking in the state of Florida. McGowan’s playing experience includes appearing nine games at outside hitter for the University of West Florida Argos in 2005 after a standout career at Seminole High School in Seminole, Fla. where she was a three year captain and four year letterman with the Warhawks.

2011 Season Preview The Tornados come into the 2011 season looking to bounce back after a season of growth as Brevard returns all but one player from last season’s squad that fought through a tough year in their third season as members of the NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference. Coach Brenda Skeffington achieved her 500th career victory last season and looks to add on to her total this year with a mostly youthful squad as the Tornados lost only graduating senior libero Rebecca Schoonover this past season. Brevard features four seniors on this year’s team, Lindsey Rogers goes down for the dig including 2011 preseason All-SAC Second Team in the 2011 preseason for the Tornados middle blocker Jordei Osby. Osby led the team and finished second in the South Atlantic Conference in 2010, averaging 1.03 blocks per game and currently sits fifth on the all-time list in total blocks for the team and will look to provide leadership at the net. Senior outside hitter Ashlie Morrison also returns after finishing second on the team in kills while leading the team in hitting percentage, and has stepped up her play in the preseason, looking to make an impact in her final season. Seniors Cassie Smatana and Lindsey Rogers will both look to provide a defensive presence on the backline for Brevard as Smatana was consistent across the board for the Tornados in the 2010 season. Rogers is among the players fighting to fill the vacant libero position in her senior season and her determination and leadership both on and off the court, as well as the ability to play multiple positions will be an asset for Brevard in the coming season.

8

Jamie Atkinson, Kortney Conner, Erin Rollins, Ashley Wilson, Joy Oswalt and Sawyer Gray all return to play at the net for the Tornados. Atkinson, named captain by Coach Skeffington in the preseason, has performed at an elite level for Brevard, covering all positions on the court in her two seasons with the Tornados. She looks to take the next step in her game this year after finishing third on the team in kills, hitting percentage and set assists, and second on the team in total blocks, as well as providing a positive force on the team while on the court.

Bethany Stevenson returns as the top setter for the Tornados in the 2011 season

Conner looks to continue her success while improving her hitting percentage in the 2011

2011 Season Preview

Jordei Osby was selected to the 2011 preseason All-Conference team

season after leading the Tornados with 221 kills in the 2010 campaign and has steadily worked to improve her overall game to contribute all over the court. Rollins finished third on the team in blocks last season as a true freshman and looks to expand her game as well, as she fights for playing time in the increasingly crowded middle for the Tornados. Ashley Wilson, Joy Oswalt and Sawyer Gray will also challenge for playing time, bringing diverse sets of skills to the net as they look to contribute to the Tornados season. Erin Cox also returns after splitting time last season at setter and outside hitter. The lefthanded hitter will provide a change-of-pace to the Tornados attack and has proven adept at hitting down the lines in her preseason appearances.

Setter Bethany Stevenson returns to lead the Tornados attack, having worked hard in the offseason on her placement, as well as her service game. Stevenson, who sits fourth all-time in the BC record books in set assists, has been the setter since day one in her time at Brevard and her experience will pay off this season as the Tornados look to return to the SAC tournament, having fallen short last season. On the backline, Sydney Yeomans and Amanda Possidente all return for the Tornados. Yeomans is among those in a battle for the libero position after finishing second on the team in digs last season, averaging 2.00 per game. The junior provides a steady hand on the backline and will look to provide leadership for the young team. Possidente also returns after limited action last season and has shown she can contribute to the team when her number is called, having recorded several digs last season in key situations. Newcomers Taryn Gmitroski and Megan Meyer will also battle for playing time for the Tornados in the 2011 season. Gmitroski, a Victoria, British Columbia, Canada native, displayed an impressive acumen of the game in preseason work, and will be an impact player in the front row rotation in her freshman year. Meyer, a defensive specialist, has also turned some heads with her play in the preseason, and is among those in the battle for playing time on the back row. The Tornados begin the 2011 season on the road in Charlotte, N.C. as they participate in the JCSU Volleyball tournament hosted by Johnson C. Smith University. The Tornados begin the regular season on Sept. 2 as they take on tournament host Johnson C. Smith at noon.

Freshman Taryn Gmitroski goes up for the serve in the 2011 preseason 9

The South Atlantic Conference The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker.

South Atlantic Conference

The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions.

In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999).

2010 Season in Review Losing five seniors last year, including the school’s all-time blocks leader in Brooke Seaman, the Tornados looked to the 2010 season with a fresh mindset and a number of fresh faces as Coach Brenda Skeffington experienced a roster turnover which saw seven new players joining the team, with most seeing extensive playing time on the court this season. The Tornados opened the season with a trio of scrimmages on the schedule before taking their first two non-conference opponents in Converse in the 2010 season opener and Mountain State in their first match of the Volley in the Mountains. Brevard opened conference play on the road at Lenoir-Rhyne and fell to the Bears in a hard-fought Jamie Atkinson goes up for the 3-2 match. Other highlights from the season include Coach Brenda Skeffington achieving her attack in the 2010 volleyball preseason 500th career victory, BC’s 3-1 victory over North Greenville University at the Columbia Tri-Match and Senior Day as the Tornados recognized their lone senior on the 2010 squad, libero Rebecca Schoonover. The Tornados ended up the 2010 season with a 3-26 record, going 0-18 in South Atlantic Conference play, but have plenty of positives to work on as they prepare to enter the fourth year in South Atlantic Conference play under Coach Brenda Skeffington. Schoonover was named to the 2010 South Atlantic Conference All-Conference team as selected by the SAC SIDs. She was named the Second Team Libero after a year in which she recorded 514 digs, averaging 4.59 digs per game to lead the Tornados. The Tornados began the 2010 season with a trio of scrimmages, hosting Spartanburg Methodist and Pitt Community College, while traveling to Tigerville, S.C. to take on North Greenville University.

Brevard opened the regular season on the road, traveling to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on Converse College. The Tornados took the first two sets, 25-14, 25-15 against the Valkyries as freshman outside hitter Kortney Conner led the attack with 20 kills. Converse rallied back to take the next two sets 18-25 and 29-31 to push the match to the all-important fifth set. The Tornados went ahead in the final set, before taking the win 15-13, giving Coach Skeffington a milestone win as she recorded her 500th career victory.

Conner, Jamie Atkinson and Ashlie Morrison led the way for BC in their second match as the Tornados swept Mountain State in the opening match of the Volley in the Mountains tournament hosted by Montreat College. Conner had eight kills, while Atkinson and Morrison added seven apiece and Schoonover

led the BC defense with 17 digs as Brevard improved to 2-0 on the season.

Florida College and Montreat were the next two Brevard opponents and the Tornados fell in both, falling to a 2-2 record before opening South Atlantic Conference play at Lenoir-Rhyne.

The first set was a tightly contested affair as the set was tied up 11 times in the match with the final coming at 24 apiece. Conner put the Tornados up 25-24 with a kill and served home the ace to put BC up 1-0 after the first set.

The Bears took the second and third sets to go up 2-1 in the match. Brevard answered in Rebecca Schoonover goes down the fourth set taking a tough set in which the teams combined for 13 ties and 11 lead for one of her 1,591 career digs changes in the set, before Brevard took control following a combined block by Joy Oswalt and Ashley Wilson to put the Tornados up 21-20. Oswalt added a set of kills in the set before Jordei Osby put in the final point off the assist from Bethany Stevenson. In the final set, the Tornados rallied back from a 7-2 deficit, bringing the score to within 11-8, but were unable to complete the comeback in the 15-9 loss. Brevard suffered losses in several of their matches, before ending their streak on October 23rd against North Greenville, located in Columbia, S.C. in the first half of the Columbia Tri-Match. The Tornados fell in the first set of the match, 25-21, before Atkinson took over at the net, recording 14 kills and five blocks as Brevard won the next three sets, 25-23, 25-23, 25-23 to record the win. Schoonover added 19 digs, while Schoonover, Conner and Stevenson combined for 10 service aces in the match. Brevard closed out the rest of the 2010 season, falling in their final six matches to finish with a 3-26 record. Conner led BC with 221 kills on the season, averaging 2.33 kills per game, while Morrison averaged 2.10 kills per game, hitting a team-high 15.9 percent on the year. Stevenson led the Tornados on the year, averaging 7.44 set assists per game and also was the Brevard leader with 25 service aces on the year. Defensively, Schoonover captained the backline for Brevard, finishing the year with 3.81 digs per game, finishing with 381 on the season. Osby finished among the SAC leaders with 93 total blocks on the year, finishing the season averaging 1.03 blocks per game. Schoonover finishes her BC career in the all-time record book, sitting second overall in career digs with 1,591 digs and third overall in career digs per game with 3.74. Though Brevard loses Schoonover, the Tornados return impressive depth at the net as Osby, Morrison, Atkinson and Erin Rollins will look to return the BC Volleyball program to prominence in the coming seasons.

The BC Experience Beyond the Classroom

Life outside the classroom. Your life outside the classroom at BC is just as important to us as the knowledge you’re gaining in class. There are many ways for you to stand out, but the first step is just to get involved. Experiences outside of the classroom compliment your formal educational experience by helping to facilitate your holistic development. Life doesn’t happen in a textbook, nor does the total Brevard experience. We help students by facilitating their growth as responsible and effective individuals while living in a cohesive campus community.

Student Involvement Programming on the BC campus is driven almost entirely by student leadership through the Campus Activities Board (CAB) with the support of almost 30 active student organizations and clubs. Saturday nights, CAB Wire features comedians, live music, and more. Students can build leadership and problem solving skills, while networking with other students, staff, faculty, and administrative leaders through the Student Government Association and our campus-wide shared governance model. You know what they say, “all work and no play…”. Whether you are interested in staying healthy or simply blowing off some steam after an exam, you can do both by enjoying friendly competition through the many different intramural sports we offer. Through the Campus and Outdoor Recreation program, students are able to experience programs that will lead to learning new skills, developing leadership abilities, and enhancing overall wellness while enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings. Whether you are a skilled rock climber or interested in climbing into a kayak for the very first time, we’ve got all kinds of opportunities for all types of students.

5 Fast Facts: • Student-faculty ratio is 11:1 • 40+ majors/minors, pre-professional studies and teacher licensure • Over 650 students from 35 states and 13 foreign countries; • One of the top 40 college towns in the US – Outside Magazine • One of the top performing arts centers in the south: The Porter Center for the Performing Arts

Community Living Living on campus is an integral part of the total educational experience at Brevard College. Community Living staff members assist students in learning how to live in community on an exciting residential campus. The friendships and life experiences developed by living on campus provide students with many unexpected benefits that positively impact the whole student…academically and socially. Whether in a traditional residence hall, a suite or apartmentstyle room, living and learning together makes the whole Brevard experience more meaningful. You can’t help but stay involved and feel attached to BC if you live right in the middle of where the action is. Study Abroad Students can pursue a minor in Spanish while experiencing immersion in the culture as well as the language during a semester in Costa Rica. Students interested in studying in Europe will find opportunities in London each year. Working together with BC faculty and staff in our Academic Enrichment Center, students have many additional options for study abroad through our membership in the Appalachian College Association. Additionally, recent trips to Egypt and Iceland are examples of experiences abroad for credit between semesters. Voice of the Rivers Voice of the Rivers (VOR) is one of the hallmarks of Brevard College. VOR consists of a select number of BC students and faculty who engage in a three week expedition focused on the interdisciplinary study of a river. Students from any major on campus traverse a river from its source to its end researching its ecosystem, developing peer and faculty bonds, presenting information to communities along the way, and earning academic credit.
