Head Coach Shannon Reid

Shannon Reid begins her fourth year as head coach of the women’s basketball team at Brevard College after joining the Tornados coaching staff in the summer of 2008, bringing with her valuable coaching and playing experience to the program.

In the 2010-2011 season, the Tornados continued their growth as they continued to set new program milestones under Coach Reid. Brevard recorded their first victory over an NCAA Division I opponent as they went on the road and defeated UNC Asheville, and the Tornados also saw their first player lead the South Atlantic Conference in a statistical category as Micheala Watkins led the conference in steals per game, averaging 2.68.

In the 2009-2010 season, Coach Reid led the team to their first Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament berth, knocking off Catawba in the regular season finale to assure post-season play for the first time since the program became an NCAA member. In her first season, Coach Reid’s team made the transition to becoming full members of NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference. Coach Reid came to Brevard after one year as the assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of Albany, a NCAA Division I program in Albany, New York. While at Albany, Reid was in charge of academics, scheduling, scouting and recruiting. Her on-court duties included guard development and defensive strategies and concepts. Reid received 2008 “Coach of the Year” honors as the team finished No. 28 in the nation in team steals and posted an 11-7 America East Conference record, which is a program record. Prior to the University of Albany, Reid spent two seasons at Clayton State University in Morrow, Ga., where she helped lead the Lakers to the 2007 NCAA Division II Final Four. Clayton State finished 29-6 overall in 2006-07 and captured the Peach Belt Conference championship. The Lakers, who were ranked as high as fourth nationally, made a second-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Prior to her appointment at Clayton State, Reid was an assistant at the University of South Carolina-Aiken, a Division II program in the Peach Belt Conference. Reid helped lead the Pacers to a 19-13 record and an NCAA appearance.

Reid played professionally for the Ladies National League

in Dublin, Ireland from 2003-04. A native of Hudson, N.C., Reid earned her bachelor’s degree in sports management from Pfeiffer University in 2003. Reid, a three-year member of the Pfeiffer women’s basketball team, was named Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC) Player of the Year and was a two-time all-CVAC first-team honoree. Reid scored more than 1,000 career points in her career for the Falcons and led her team to its first-ever NCAA Tournament. She was a two-time team MVP and the university’s Athlete of the Year.

2011-2012 Season Preview After three years, the time is now for seniors Lindsay Brendle, Holli Flippo and Anna Schlobohm, as the trio comprises the Tornados first four year graduating class of players who have spent their entire career in South Atlantic Conference play. Coach Shannon Reid begins her fourth season with the Tornados women’s basketball team as the Tornados look to return to the postseason after falling short of the 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament and returns four starters and 11 players from last years’ squad.

Micheala Watkins and the Tornados work hard in the 2011 preseason camp

Though the Tornados lose graduate Amanda Whitaker from the front court, junior point guard Micheala Watkins returns after becoming the first Brevard College women’s basketball player to win a SAC statistical championship after leading the conference in steals per game with 2.68 per game, including a BC single game record with 10 steals on November 20th against St. Andrews. Seniors Flippo, Brendle and Schlobohm also plan on making an impact in their final season in Boshamer Gymnasium as all three have been influential in the program since day one when they stepped on campus. Flippo returns after having been the team’s leading rebounder last season from the guard position as the 5-6 athlete from Kingston Springs, Tenn. possesses the basketball acumen and determination to bang down low, while also providing a dead-eye shot from the outside after connecting on 37 three-pointers last season. Brendle added another dynamic to her skilled offensive set in the 2010-2011 season as she began to push the ball into the lane instead of settling for jump shots on the outside and the rising senior completed her most successful season after leading the Tornados with 11.9 points per game, connecting on a team high 42.9 percent of her field goal attempts. Brendle was also third on the team in rebounding and will look to continue to her growth as she takes on a larger role in the offense this season.

The Tornados train hard in the preseason as they prepare for the 2011-2012 season

Schlobohm was the key to the Tornados offense last season, as the rising senior played the key sixth-man role under Coach Reid, providing instant offense when she walked on the court. A strong 5-8 guard, Schlobohm has the skills to

9

2011-2012 Season Preview

create her own shot at will and added a career high 27 point game last season as she looks to continue to be the spark the BC offense needs this season.

Juniors Asheley Watkins, Candice Fritz and Alyssa Cutshaw also return to provide experience to the Tornados depth chart.

Watkins, a defensive stopper and athletic slasher showcased both skills last season and cracked her way into the starting lineup and provides speed for Coach Reid in the lineup when matched with Micheala, while also The Tornados women’s basketball team running as the back-up point guard. Fritz are big supporters of all BC Athletic teams showcased her skills early last season with a double-double and continues to work her way into developing into one of the top post players in the conference, while Cutshaw gives the Tornados dependability and stability in the offense and provides a lefthanded stroke from the perimeter for Brevard. Katelynne Poole returns after a redshirt season and is one of the best pure shooters on the court, leading the Tornados at the free throw line in her first season, and with a year under her belt, her confidence is running high as she returns to the BC lineup. Chezney McJunkin also comes back for her sophomore campaign and will give Brevard a change-of-pace at the point guard position when she steps on the court. New faces will also play a key role for the Tornados in the 2011-2012 season as Brevard welcomes Lacey Singletary, Chantel Alford and Taylor Hiatt to the crowd. Singletary is expected to step in and help provide a presence in the post for the Tornados, as the 6-1 athlete can contribute both offensively and defensively. Alford is also expected to make an impact in the post with her ability to score and rebound, with a strong back to the basket game, as well as the ability to score and rebound, while Hiatt’s ability to defend, rebound, and score from different positions will allow her to make an immediate impact in our program. The Tornados will begin their 2011-2012 campaign on the road with a scrimmage at defending NCAA Division II National Champions Clayton State, before opening the regular season on November 12th against Belmont Abbey.

The South Atlantic Conference The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker.

South Atlantic Conference

The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions.

www.thesac.com

In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999).

2010-2011 Season Review After losing the all-time leading scorer in program history to graduation, Head Coach Shannon Reid knew her team would have their ups and downs as they headed into the season, but after victories over NCAA Division I UNC Asheville, and wins over 2010 NCAA Southeast Region tournament participants Carson-Newman College and Anderson University, the Tornados proved remained a force to be reckoned with in the South Atlantic Conference. Micheala Watkins received postseason recognition from the South Atlantic Conference office, having led the SAC in steals, averaging 2.68 steals per game and Amanda Whitaker capped off a stellar career setting five BC career records as the Tornados finished the 2010-2011 season with a 6-22 record, 2-16 in South Atlantic Conference play.

Anna Schlobohm prepares her drive into the lane...or is it going to be a pull-up jumper?

The Tornados fell in several close games to open the season as they went toe-to-toe with North Georgia and Clayton State at the Chick-Fil-A Southeast Regional Challenge and dropped a contest on the road to Pfeiffer University before Brevard notched their first victory of the season in a record-setting game against St. Andrews Presbyterian. Brevard was able to avenge a previous defeat to the Knights as Lindsay Brendle scored a game high 18 points and Micheala Watkins set a BC single game record, recording 10 steals in the contest to pace Brevard to the 79-48 victory. Brevard was able to make it two in a row as the Tornados traveled to Young Harris, Ga. in their next game, taking on the Mountain Lions. The Tornados led by as many as 15 points in the game before a furious Young Harris comeback, but Candice Fritz, Holli Flippo and Brendle each contributed double-digit scoring games as the Tornados held off the Mountain Lions for the 59-54 victory.

Micheala Watkins sparked the Tornados as they continued on the road at the Catawba Classic as the sophomore point guard recorded back-to-back 20+ point performances, scoring 27 in the loss to Barton and lead the Tornados past Lees-McRae on day two as they prepared to head into their toughest test of the season at UNC Asheville.

Brianna Worley broke open a tight contest with a three-pointer with 14:11 remaining in the first half as Brevard went on a 10-0 run on their way to holding an 11 point halftime lead over the Bulldogs at 34-23. Asheville rallied at the start of the second half to cut the deficit down to five points at 37-32, but the Tornados continued to pull away in the game, taking a 14 point lead as Fritz canned a free throw to

2010-2011 Season Review

put the Tornados up 56-42. Asheville made one final rally toward the end of the game, but a late steal by Watkins put the game away as Brevard handed Asheville the 71-61 loss.

After a slight skid, the Tornados picked up their first conference win of the season in their first action in the new year as they hosted CarsonNewman College. The scoring was balanced across the board for Brevard as five players reached double-digits, hitting 53.7% from the floor and 45.5% from behind the arc in the contest. Worley again put the Tornados ahead for good, hitting a layup early in the first half as Brevard led 39-31 at the break. The Tornados put up the first 10 points in the second half, on their way to leading by as many as 19 points in the game as they pulled away and handed the Eagles the 81-68 loss.

Micheala Watkins calls the play for the Tornados offense as she walks down the court

Brevard recorded their final win of the season at home in conference play when they hosted Anderson University on January 29th in a rematch of their contest on December 4th. Neither team was able to pull away from each other in the early going as the largest lead was five points in the first half, with Anderson holding the 37-35 advantage as the teams headed into the locker room. Holli Flippo hit a pair of free throws in the second half to tie the game up at 44, sparking a 15-5 run as Brevard went up 57-49 with 5:53 left on the clock. Despite a late charge by the Trojans at the end, Watkins hit a running jumper to finish her 26 point performance to give the Tornados the 67-63 victory. Lindsay Brendle led the Tornados in scoring on the season, averaging 11.9 points per game, while Watkins was close behind with 11.6 points per game, as well as leading the team in assists and steals. Anna Schlobohm averaged double-digits as well, averaging 11.4 points per game, while Holli Flippo led the Tornados on the boards, averaging 4.3 rebounds per game. Amanda Whitaker capped off her career in the paint for Brevard with 31 blocked shots and finished second in the conference in steals per game with 2.28. Whitaker finishes her four year career with the Tornados dotting the record book, graduating as the program’s all-time leader in blocked shots, defensive rebounds and minutes played among others. The Tornados lose four seniors following the 2010-11 season as Micah LaJoie, Amber Roberts, Whitaker, and Brianna Worley all graduate. However Coach Reid returns two captains in Holli Flippo and Anna Schlobohm, as well as Lindsay Brendle and Micheala Watkins as Brevard will look to return to the postseason in 2012.

The BC Experience Beyond the Classroom

Life outside the classroom. College is about getting an education…but that doesn’t mean learning only happens in the classroom. At Brevard College we take your education seriously and that is why we believe in your holistic development—that is, helping facilitate your growth as responsible and effective individuals while living in a socially cohesive campus community.

A Campus For Students… Life on the Brevard College campus is centered on the student experience in and out of the classroom. From the moment you arrive on campus, you become part of a dynamic community where there are more than 30 active student organizations and clubs, a Campus Activities Board (CAB) that offers over 100 programs and events a year, and there are multiple offerings in intramurals, outdoor recreation, and student leadership opportunities.

…By Students Everything that happens in the student culture on campus is driven by student leadership that you can easily be a part of joining. Whether you want to be involved in student government (SGA), athletics, chorale ensembles, or just take on a position as a resident advisor (RA), there is an opportunity for you to grow as a person, as a paraprofessional, and ultimately as a professional member of the campus culture and leadership team on campus.

Step In. Stand Out.

5 Fast Facts: • All student clubs, organizations, and offices in Campus Life are run by students, just like you! • Students are recognized for their individuality, but also in how they work with other students in group dynamics. • Majors are for degrees; experiences are for life—we will help you develop and grow both in and out of the classroom • There are clubs and organizations and leadership opportunities for everyone— you want it, we got it. If we don’t, we will create it! • Leadership begins with you. If you step in, you will stand out.

Once you step into the campus culture, you are already predestined to develop and grow your personal leadership skills. At BC, we will get to know you, welcome you into the cohesive family of learners, and help you develop your potential to do whatever it is you want to do while enrolled at Brevard College. This experience is what you want to make it and it’s all about you as an individual within the context of a community of other students who want to form friendships, team relationships, and lifelong bonds with you. You can’t help but stay involved and feel attached to BC once you get involved. Brevard College • Brevard, NC • 1.800.527.9090 • admissions@brevard.edu • www.brevard.edu

Campus Life at Brevard College The Division of Campus Life is committed to the personal development and growth of each student at Brevard College. We will get to know you and help you get what you want out of this collegiate experience. Through our many offerings and services, you will find an informative, resourceful division that is here to serve you!

Personal Development and Wellness It all begins with you as an individual. We recognize that you come to College from a certain place, background, with certain characteristics that make you unique. We don’t want to change any of that, but we want you to be the “best you” that you can be. Along the way, we recognize that there are times when students struggle with college and we have offices and services that are here to assist you individually. Whether it’s through our Wellness Center in Stamey, our housing office with your roommate, suitemates, or room assignments, or whether it’s in helping assist you through our Campus Security operation, we have 24/7 coverage that is available in any time of need.

Community Development But we don’t want you to stay individuals forever. Part of being in college and developing into the responsible citizen that you will be is to live in a community with others and learn from each other and grow socially, physically, emotionally, and more. Thus, we have offices centered on engaging you in activities and events in various interest areas. Additionally, we have programming centered on multicultural awareness, service initiatives, intramurals, outdoor recreation, and more.

Other Unique BC Programs And if all of this wasn’t enough—we offer alternative fall and spring break trips to help raise awareness to social justice issues while providing service to local communities of interest. We also provide opportunities for students to study abroad, be a part of a living-learning community like our Institute for Women in Leadership (IWIL), or take part in our Voice of the Rivers (VOR) program where students work with faculty on a three week expedition focused on the interdisciplinary study of a river. At BC, we have so much to offer you in your educational and social pursuits and these are just a few examples of the types of experiences you could be enjoying. So what are you waiting for? Be prepared to step in and stand out in a community developed for students, by students. All that’s missing is…YOU!

We

Pledge‌ We have joined institutions across 22 conferences and independents in committing to safe, fun, and entertaining sporting experiences on Division II campuses. We have signed the pledge to create and continue family-friendly experiences for everyone.

DIVISION II GAME ENVIRONMENT PLEDGE NCAA Division II presidents and chancellors affirm that athletics events should reflect the values of higher education and the mission of each institution. Division II emphasizes learning and development in a personal setting. As chancellors and presidents, we are concerned about the uncivil behavior exhibited at college athletics contests and thereby pledge to work together to make respectful, familyfriendly events a standard of the Division II experience.
