Head Coach Britne Stubbs Coach Britne Stubbs begins her fifth year as Head Coach of the Lady Tornados softball team.
Coach Stubbs also serves as the Senior Woman Administrator at Brevard College, providing a female voice and perspective on key issues and serving as a role model for diversity, inclusion and gender equity in the athletic community. She is the liaison with the BC SAAC to work with the committee on developing and carrying out their goals and initiatives as well as promoting community service projects and campus leadership initiatives. In addition, she also serves as the Director of Champs Life-Skills at Brevard and will help out in Operations and Game Day Administration.
This past season, the Tornados continued their marked improvement as Brevard finished with their first winning season, going 29-21 and earned their second berth to the SAC tournament, this time as the seven-seed. The Tornados also won their first postseason game, defeating tournament host Carson-Newman in the first round. Brevard had their third player named to the All-SAC team in freshman designated player Emily Boykin. In 2010, Coach Stubbs continued to lead the Tornados softball team, as Brevard improved their record for the third consecutive season on their way to a sixth place regular season in the conference, while seeing two players named to the All-SAC team and several athletes listed in multiple categories in both the NCAA and SAC statistical rankings. The Tornados also recorded their first win against a ranked opponent and their first victory over an NCAA Division I institution during the season. In 2009, Coach Stubbs oversaw the team as the Tornados made the transition to becoming full members of NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference. The BC softball team went 17-27, 2-14 in conference play and was one of four Tornados teams to make it to the SAC Tournament. In her first season at the helm of the women’s softball program, Coach Stubbs help guide the team to a 13-27 record on the season, an 11-game improvement from the 2007 season.
As provisional members of both the NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference in 2008, the Tornados played a very challenging schedule, taking on a number of strong teams throughout the year.
The Tornados had a season-high five-game winning streak in early February, to jump out of the gates with an impressive 5-3 start. The Tornados finished the season on a high-note winning four of their last five games, including a season-ending sweep of Montreat College.
Stubbs, who originally hails from Bennettsville, S.C., comes to Brevard by way of Tiffin University in Tiffin, Ohio. At Tiffin, Stubbs served as the assistant softball coach while she completed her master’s degree in business

Prior to coaching at Tiffin, Stubbs played softball at Queens University of Charlotte. Stubbs was named to the CVAC AllConference first team three times and was her team’s Most Valuable Offensive Player three consecutive seasons spanning from 2002-2005. In the 2005, Stubbs was named the Female Athlete of the Year for Queens University. The South Atlantic Conference The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker.
South Atlantic Conference
The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions.
www.thesac.com
In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999).

2011 BC Softball Season in Review The Brevard College softball team completed their best season under Coach Britne Stubbs, winning the most games since the Tornados joined the NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference, seeing a player named to the Second Team All-Conference and winning their first Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament game as Brevard went 29-21, 6-12 in conference play in the 2011 season. Brevard achieved a winning record at the BC Softball Field, going 15-7 overall in front of the home fans as the offense was led by a duo of .300 hitters in junior catcher Chelsi Mallory and senior first baseman Sarah Carlos. Mallory hit .365 to lead Brevard and added a career high eight home runs in the game to go with 28 runs batted Chelsi Mallory looks for the sign from the in, while Carlos added a grand slam while hitting dugout during a game at the BC Softball Field .314 on the season. Kayla Clemens, Becca Curlee, Brittany Fowler and Brittany Jones also had career highs in multiple offensive categories to help the Brevard offense set several team records in the season. On the mound, senior Martika Elmore concluded her record-setting career at Brevard, finishing the regular season fourth in the NCAA in strikeouts with 249 on the season, while going 17-11 with a 1.77 earned run average on the season. Elmore added 26 complete games and eight shutouts, including a no-hitter during the season. Freshman Alyssa Miller also added a no-hitter on the season, going 12-10 on the year with a 3.45 earned run average and 14 complete games. Brevard won six of their first eight games, sweeping Southern Wesleyan, Milligan and Columbia College, while falling to USC Aiken. The Tornados opened up the season with a pair of victories over Southern Wesleyan as Elmore struck out 15 in her season debut, while Mallory belted a three-run shot in the second game to complete the sweep. After falling to the Pacers, Brevard responded with wins over the Buffaloes and the Koalas, with BC scoring 12 runs in the second game against Columbia, led by Clemens’ first collegiate home run.
The Tornados saw their winning streak snapped in the first game against Winston-Salem State, but responded by using the long ball as Mallory hit another three-run shot to put Brevard back in the wins column. The victory started another four game winning streak as Carlos came up big over the next three games, driving in six runs in the doubleheader sweep of Georgia College and State and added another two in the victory over Virginia Intermont.
After a pair of losses, BC began their longest winning streak of the season, taking seven consecutive games starting on February 27th against Pfeiffer University. Clemens started the winning streak, driving in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh to give BC the 5-4 victory over the Falcons. Mallory and Curlee had big hits in support of Elmore and Miller in the close victories over Young Harris College,

giving way to Elmore’s first no-hitter of the 2011 season as the senior struck out seven in the game against Davis & Elkins. Miller won the nightcap of the series as the team headed to the Patriot Invitational.
Ally Davenport kept the win streak alive with a single up the middle in the ninth inning against Coker College, winning 3-2, and the streak reached seven as Kayla Dorsey drove in all three runs against Francis Marion to give BC a 2-0 record in the tournament.
Miller responded to a BC loss with her first collegiate no-hitter, striking out five against Hillsdale to improve BC to 18-7 as they headed into the conference schedule.

Carlos’ solo home run against Anderson gave BC all the runs they needed in their first SAC win of the season. BC followed it up by making history at the BC softball field as the Tornados recorded their first conference sweep, taking both games from Newberry College as Curlee scored the winning run in extra innings in game one, while Miller fired a two-hitter in the second game to complete the sweep. Brevard would continue the season by sweeping Columbia for the second time in the season and added a second conference sweep in toppling Lincoln Memorial on the road in early April as they topped the Railsplitters 3-0 and 4-3. The Tornados would record their final wins of the regular season against Johnson C. Smith, setting a single game record with 20 runs in the first game against the Golden Bulls as BC blasted five extra base hits and scored nine runs in the third inning in the victory. Brevard would fall in their final contests of the season, but earned the seven seed in the 2011 Food Lion SAC tournament, drawing the host of the tournament for the second time as they took on two seed CarsonNewman in the quarterfinal round. The Tornados had dropped a pair to the Lady Eagles the week before, but came out with a fire as the pitchers matched zeros on the board until the top of the seventh when Mallory drove in Curleee with a single to centerfield and Elmore made the run stand by retiring the side for the BC Softball team’s first Division II postseason victory. Brevard fell in their next two games to end the season, but the team received several postseason accolades as designated player Emily Boykin was named to the All-SAC Second team, while Elmore led the conference in strikeouts per game with 8.65 and Mallory was the SAC’s leader in on-base percentage at 0.497. Though Brevard loses seniors Carlos, Dorsey and Elmore, the future remains bright as the team has improved their record each of the last four years and will look to once again battle in the conference and make it to the NCAA Regional tournament.

The BC Experience Beyond the Classroom
Life outside the classroom. College is about getting an education…but that doesn’t mean learning only happens in the classroom. At Brevard College we take your education seriously and that is why we believe in your holistic development—that is, helping facilitate your growth as responsible and effective individuals while living in a socially cohesive campus community.
A Campus For Students… Life on the Brevard College campus is centered on the student experience in and out of the classroom. From the moment you arrive on campus, you become part of a dynamic community where there are more than 30 active student organizations and clubs, a Campus Activities Board (CAB) that offers over 100 programs and events a year, and there are multiple offerings in intramurals, outdoor recreation, and student leadership opportunities.
…By Students Everything that happens in the student culture on campus is driven by student leadership that you can easily be a part of joining. Whether you want to be involved in student government (SGA), athletics, chorale ensembles, or just take on a position as a resident advisor (RA), there is an opportunity for you to grow as a person, as a paraprofessional, and ultimately as a professional member of the campus culture and leadership team on campus.
Step In. Stand Out.
5 Fast Facts: • All student clubs, organizations, and offices in Campus Life are run by students, just like you! • Students are recognized for their individuality, but also in how they work with other students in group dynamics. • Majors are for degrees; experiences are for life—we will help you develop and grow both in and out of the classroom • There are clubs and organizations and leadership opportunities for everyone— you want it, we got it. If we don’t, we will create it! • Leadership begins with you. If you step in, you will stand out.
Once you step into the campus culture, you are already predestined to develop and grow your personal leadership skills. At BC, we will get to know you, welcome you into the cohesive family of learners, and help you develop your potential to do whatever it is you want to do while enrolled at Brevard College. This experience is what you want to make it and it’s all about you as an individual within the context of a community of other students who want to form friendships, team relationships, and lifelong bonds with you. You can’t help but stay involved and feel attached to BC once you get involved. Brevard College • Brevard, NC • 1.800.527.9090 • admissions@brevard.edu • www.brevard.edu

This is Brevard College Campus Life at Brevard College The Division of Campus Life is committed to the personal development and growth of each student at Brevard College. We will get to know you and help you get what you want out of this collegiate experience. Through our many offerings and services, you will find an informative, resourceful division that is here to serve you!
Personal Development and Wellness It all begins with you as an individual. We recognize that you come to College from a certain place, background, with certain characteristics that make you unique. We don’t want to change any of that, but we want you to be the “best you” that you can be. Along the way, we recognize that there are times when students struggle with college and we have offices and services that are here to assist you individually. Whether it’s through our Wellness Center in Stamey, our housing office with your roommate, suitemates, or room assignments, or whether it’s in helping assist you through our Campus Security operation, we have 24/7 coverage that is available in any time of need.
Community Development But we don’t want you to stay individuals forever. Part of being in college and developing into the responsible citizen that you will be is to live in a community with others and learn from each other and grow socially, physically, emotionally, and more. Thus, we have offices centered on engaging you in activities and events in various interest areas. Additionally, we have programming centered on multicultural awareness, service initiatives, intramurals, outdoor recreation, and more.
Other Unique BC Programs And if all of this wasn’t enough—we offer alternative fall and spring break trips to help raise awareness to social justice issues while providing service to local communities of interest. We also provide opportunities for students to study abroad, be a part of a living-learning community like our Institute for Women in Leadership (IWIL), or take part in our Voice of the Rivers (VOR) program where students work with faculty on a three week expedition focused on the interdisciplinary study of a river. At BC, we have so much to offer you in your educational and social pursuits and these are just a few examples of the types of experiences you could be enjoying. So what are you waiting for? Be prepared to step in and stand out in a community developed for students, by students. All that’s missing is…YOU!
