Head Coach Juan Mascaro

Head Coach Juan Mascaro is beginning his fifth year at the helm of the Brevard College men’s soccer program, as the Tornados go into their fourth year as full NCAA Division II and South Atlantic Conference members.

Mascaro was selected to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Advisory Committee in 2010-2011 and will help with the gathering and sharing of results for teams within their conference or geographical area, the ranking of the top teams in the region, the provision of input in the selection of officials for the championship, the provision of input in the selection of sites for championship competition and the service as a sounding board for the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Committee.

In 2008, Mascaro led the men’s soccer team to a 5-14-1 record in their inaugural season as members of NCAA Division II and the SAC. The Tornados recorded their first SAC win over Lincoln Memorial, 2-1, on Oct. 24. The highlight of the season came on Oct. 15 when they took Division I Winthrop into double overtime, before falling 2-1.

During his time at Brevard, Mascaro has guided the men’s soccer team to a 9-28-2 record, playing a full SAC slate, which includes four NCAA Division II National Tournament participants and the NCAA DII National Championship runner-up.

Mascaro comes to Brevard from Campbell University where he spent two seasons as the Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach. During his first season at Campbell, he helped the Fighting Camels to advance into the 2005 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. From this outstanding performance the Camels ended their season with a 6-3-1 league record and 8-9-2 overall. While at Campbell his duties included training the goalkeepers, recruiting coordinator and monitoring the academic progress of the student athletes.

6

Prior to Campbell, he was the Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach for the University of Central Florida for five seasons. During his tenure, the Golden Knights were ranked as high as number-13 nationally and won the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. During his last three seasons with the Golden Knights the team finished with a 35-20-1 overall record. His main areas of responsibilities for the Knights included training the goalkeepers, recruiting coordinator assisting the head coach in all areas of team training.

A native of El Salvador, Mascaro earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration in 1994 and his Master of Arts in Applied Economics in 1999 from the University of Central Florida. He currently holds his NSCAA National Coaching Diploma earned in 1994 and Advanced National Diploma in 1995.

Associate Head Coach Shigeyoshi Shinohara

Coach Shinohara joined the staff at Brevard College as the Head Women’s Soccer Coach in the spring of 2009, coming to Brevard from the University of Montevallo where he served as the assistant women’s soccer coach.

In his first year, Coach Shinohara led the women’s soccer team to their first berth in post-season play, reaching the quarterfinals of the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women’s Soccer tournament before bowing out to eventual champion Carson-Newman. The Tornados continued to improve under Coach Shinohara, winning their first South Atlantic Conference regular season contest in the 2010 season, topping Tusculum at the BC Soccer Field by a score of 2-0.

During his time at Montevallo, Shinohara was heavily involved in recruiting for head coach Patricia Hughes, and was also very involved in all facets of the operation of the women’s soccer program.

Shinohara started his coaching career in Yamaguchi, Japan where he was the assistant for the Seiki Football Club of a group aged 10-16 from 1994-2001. From there he moved to the United Soccer Academy where he was responsible for the day-to-day administrative operations as well as being a full-time coach where he coached one-on-one sessions with youth players whose ages ranged from 3-18. Shinohara opened his collegiate coaching career in August of 2005 when he became the assistant women’s coach at the University of Montevallo. During his time at Montevallo, the Falcons were the Gulf South Conference Champions in 2007, making it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Tampa in the South Region Championship match. Montevallo also was a Gulf South Tournament finalist in 2008.

In addition to his collegiate work, Shinohara has been a member of the Alabama Olympic Developmental Program staff from August 2005-present, evaluating and training players as well as coaching in spring and summer camps in the district and state. He also coached the 2005 Alabama State Cup Division II Champion South Shelby Futball Club Strikers 93 and assisted with the Birmingham United Soccer Association Alabama State League U15 Division I Champions Lady Jets 92 Blue team in 2006.

Shinohara also holds an NSCAA Premier Diploma and an Advanced National Diploma as well as the F.A. Coaching License and the UEFA “B” Award International Coaching License from the Football Association in England.

2011 Men’s Soccer Season Preview Fresh off their first postseason appearance in which the Tornados took the top seed to the limit before falling in double overtime, Brevard looks to pick up from where they left off as they approach the 2011 season with a pair of scrimmages against NCAA Division I opponents on their way to beginning their fourth season as members of the South Atlantic Conference. Head Coach Juan Mascaro returns for his fifth season with Brevard College, having added the mantle of Interim Athletic Director to his title, but his focus on the 2011 season remains intact as he returns 13 players from last season’s squad. Mascaro will look to provide balance to the roster as he welcomes 19 transfers and freshmen to the team as the Tornados will look to establish a style of up-tempo play to the team dynamic this season.

Daniel Zambrano pushes the ball forward in preseason action for the Tornados

Mascaro will have help this season on the sidelines, welcoming Associate Head Coach Shigeyoshi Shinohara to the bench. Shinohara has been the BC Women’s Soccer Head Coach for the last two seasons and has been successful at all levels of soccer he has coached on. Leading the Tornados in the 2011 season is a trio of seniors, Scott Schuurman, Thomas Kombol and Anthony Cardenas. Schuurman, a three-year starter at defender, is the 2011 Team Captain and will be someone Coach Mascaro will rely on to provide coaching on the field to the team. Schuurman also will provide an offensive threat, having recorded a goal and a pair of assists last season and will supplement the BC attack up front. Kombol returns for his senior season and provides leadership in between the pipes. The only four year goalie on the roster, Kombol will have an impact both on and off the field for the Tornados. Cardenas will also provide an experienced hand for Coach Mascaro at defender, having played in 43 career matches with the Tornados. His leadership on the back line will help Brevard continue to establish their pattern of success in the 2011 season.

Paulo Silva places a shot on goal in the Tornados preseason game against Winthrop

Also returning in goal for the Tornados in the 2011 season are junior Jack Shaw and sophomore Pauli Jussila. Shaw, or “Ginge” as the team affectionately calls him, returns with the most on-field experience for Brevard, having played in 27 matches in the goal over the past two seasons. His save percentage has climbed in each of the past two seasons, while his goals allowed have dropped as Shaw has become more reliable in the goal for the Tornados. Jussila also returns, having played in 13 matches as a true freshman. Jussila led the team with 48 saves last year, with a 69.3% save percentage and both Shaw and Jussila look poised to jump into the upper echelon of keepers in the SAC in the 2011 season. Returning at the defender position with

2011 Men’s Soccer Season Preview

Schuurman and Cardenas are juniors Ryan Guill and Alec Darcey. The duo possesses the height and speed to duel with the top forwards in the conference and are sure-footed ball handlers on the back row.

Joining the quartet on BC’s last line of defense include junior transfer Joel Jalanne, sophomore Patrick Burke and freshmen Garrett Stone, Andre Luiz Corvello, Alejandro Rivillas and Nicolas Daza. Jalanne comes to Brevard from Hartwick College where he played under Coach John Scott and Bo Brinsko. Burke comes into Brevard after a decorated career at Tuscola High School, while Stone, Corvello, Rivillas and Daza all come in with impressive high school resumes and will look to fight for playing time and make an impact on the pitch from day one.

Garrett Stone challenges the ball on the Tornados backline in early competition

In the midfield, Landon Reid, Adam Martin, Patrick Urmson, Jacob Parker and Ian Baker are among the returners fighting for playing time. Reid scored a pair of goals in the 2010 season, including the game-tying goal in the SAC tournament quarterfinal game and will provide an offensive spark to the Tornados midfield. Urmson also returns for the Tornados after receiving the 2011 Coaches’ Award for his hard work and dedication to the squad and his balanced play gives Brevard a trusted weapon in the middle, while Martin, Parker and Baker provide experience and will battle for playing time among the multitude of newcomers this season. A multitude of transfers and freshman also come in and will challenge for playing time as Paulo Silva, Jorge Davila, Felipe Mendonca, Derek Young, Efren Escoba, and Erik Hearn also will battle it out in practice as they fight to get on the field in their first season with the Tornados. Jami Uuttu returns with the most experience up front for the Tornados, coming off a season in which he scored the first goal in the Tornados first playoff appearance, giving Brevard much needed momentum in their brief playoff run. The sophomore from Naantali, Finland is the Tornados leading returning goal scorer and also led the team with a pair of assists last season and is expected to step up in his role under Coach Mascaro to lead Brevard back to the postseason. Tommi Rasinmaki, Marcelo Betcer, Daniel Zambrano, Jacob Crisp, Fernando Estevez and Lucas Goncalves will also see time up front for the Tornados in the 2011 season. Sophomores Rasinmaki and Betcer will provide experience to the squad as Rasinmaki comes to the team after earning a championship at Tampere University of Technology in Tampere, Finland, while Betcer transfers in from Colegio Anglo Modulo in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Freshmen Zambrano, Crisp, Estevez and Goncalves will provide energy and creative ability up front for Coach Mascaro. The Tornados open up the 2011 regular season on the BC Soccer Field against Erskine College on Thursday, Sept. 1st against the Erskine College Flying Fleet.

Coach Shinohara and Coach Mascaro see nothing but good things in the Tornados future 9

The South Atlantic Conference The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker.

South Atlantic Conference

The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions.

www.thesac.com

In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999).

2010 Season Review The Brevard College men’s soccer team capped off a great season as they advanced 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament for the first time in program history. Led by the senior leadership of Henri Erti, Miro Mustonen, Niclas Stolt and Renato Barbosa, the Tornados advanced to the first round of the SAC tournament for the first time since Brevard became eligible for NCAA postseason play in the 2008-2009 year. The Tornados defeated both Tusculum College and Newberry College during the regular season, finishing with an overall record of 3-15-1 (2-7 SAC). Jaime Villacis set a school record with seven Miro Mustonen advances the ball up the assists on the season and finished with a pair sidelines during preseason competition of goals to lead the Tornados offense on the season, while freshmen Andrew Gallowitch and Jami Uuttu led the goal-scoring efforts with four and three apiece. Sean Allison and Landon Reid also added multiple goals, while Uuttu and Schuurman also had multiple assists on the year. Between the pipes, Pauli Jussila and Jack Shaw saw the majority of the time in goal for Coach Juan Mascaro, while Ryan Bailey also saw action in the net for BC. The trio combined in averaging 3.24 goals allowed per game and stopped 93 shots on goal in the season as Brevard bounced back from a tough 2009 season. The Tornados opened the season with a pair of exhibitions, hosting Montreat College and making the trip to Johnson City, Tenn. to take on Milligan College, before opening the season on the road in Due West, S.C. against Erskine College. Brevard fell to the Flying Fleet, before making their annual trip to Rock Hill, S.C. to take on NCAA Division I opponent, Winthrop University. The Tornados battled the Eagles throughout the contest, but were unable to come away with the win in falling, 2-0. Uuttu helped the Tornados to their first tie of the season in Brevard’s home opener against Conference Carolinas opponent Mount Olive College at the BC Soccer Field. Uuttu’s goal at the 11:08 mark gave Brevard the early lead against the Trojans and the Tornados held the lead throughout the majority of the contest, before Mount Olive snuck a ball inside the goal with 42 seconds left in regulation to send the match to overtime. Neither team was able to score as BC recorded their first point of the season with the tie.

Gallowitch added a second goal early in the second half, but the Pioneers tied it up with 30 minutes to play. BC was able to clinch the victory through in the 79th minute as Gallowitch recorded the first hat trick of his collegiate career to give the Tornados their first SAC win of the season.

BC dropped their next four contests before hosting Newberry College at home on October 23rd. A win in the game would clinch a berth into the postseason for the Tornados, but the Landon Reid soars above the defender in Wolves were determined to upset the party as preparation to put the ball in the goal Newberry scored in the first four minutes of the contest. Erti knotted the game up with a goal from the right side of the box, tipping off a defender and into the net to tie the match up in the first half. Villacis recorded the game-winner at the 50:21 mark, taking the pass from Schuurman and beating the keeper to give Brevard a lead they would not relinquish as the Tornados clinched the tournament berth. Brevard kept rolling in their next contest as they celebrated Senior Day in front of the home crowd against Queens (N.C.) University. Allison received the pass from Schuurman and tapped the ball in the right side of the net, past the keeper to put BC up in the first four minutes of the game. Jussila recorded the shutout, making five saves in the game in giving the Tornados their longest winning streak in the past two years. The Tornados fell in their final two regular season games in earning the eighth seed in the 2010 Food Lion SAC tournament, earning a trip to regular season champion, Wingate University. Wingate scored twice in the first half to take the lead, but BC responded in the second half, scoring a pair of goals in less than two minutes. Uuttu touched a corner kick by Villacis past the Bulldogs’ keeper to cut the lead in half, and Reid beat the keeper two minutes later to knot the score up. Neither team was able to find the net as the game headed into overtime. The teams were scoreless throughout the first overtime period and looked to be headed into penalty kicks with under a minute left in the second half before a BC foul gave the Bulldogs a free kick which they converted with 30 seconds left in the contest to end the Brevard season. The Tornados lose their four seniors, but return the bulk of their 17 underclassmen and juniors as they look to build off the momentum gained during the 2010 season as they prepare to take the next step in their journey in the NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference.

Athletics Brevard College boasts a distinguished and successful history in intercollegiate athletics, winning nine national team championships as a junior college (1937-2000). During this period, more than 200 Brevard College student athletes received All American honors. After completing the transition to a four-year institution in 2000, the College became an active member of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Over the next eight years, Brevard athletic teams earned 10 conference titles and made 9 national tournament appearances. A new era of Brevard College athletics began in 2006 as the Tornados initiated the transition process from the NAIA to NCAA Division II while also adding football, cycling and cheerleading as varsity sports. Brevard College was officially granted active NCAA Division II and South Atlantic Conference membership status on September 1, 2008. In just two years of eligibility, every single BC Athletic team has either recorded a South Atlantic Conference win or made it to the postseason South Atlantic Conference tournament. The men’s basketball team won Brevard’s first South Atlantic Conference Championship and the Cycling team was named the 2009 Fall Mountain Bike National Champions. Brevard has also seen multiple athletes and coaches receive both All- Conference and All-Region recognition as the Tornados look to establish a pattern of success both in the NCAA and the South Atlantic Conference.

The BC Experience Beyond the Classroom

Life outside the classroom. Your life outside the classroom at BC is just as important to us as the knowledge you’re gaining in class. There are many ways for you to stand out, but the first step is just to get involved. Experiences outside of the classroom compliment your formal educational experience by helping to facilitate your holistic development. Life doesn’t happen in a textbook, nor does the total Brevard experience. We help students by facilitating their growth as responsible and effective individuals while living in a cohesive campus community.

Student Involvement Programming on the BC campus is driven almost entirely by student leadership through the Campus Activities Board (CAB) with the support of almost 30 active student organizations and clubs. Saturday nights, CAB Wire features comedians, live music, and more. Students can build leadership and problem solving skills, while networking with other students, staff, faculty, and administrative leaders through the Student Government Association and our campus-wide shared governance model. You know what they say, “all work and no play…”. Whether you are interested in staying healthy or simply blowing off some steam after an exam, you can do both by enjoying friendly competition through the many different intramural sports we offer. Through the Campus and Outdoor Recreation program, students are able to experience programs that will lead to learning new skills, developing leadership abilities, and enhancing overall wellness while enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings. Whether you are a skilled rock climber or interested in climbing into a kayak for the very first time, we’ve got all kinds of opportunities for all types of students.

Community Living Living on campus is an integral part of the total educational experience at Brevard College. Community Living staff members assist students in learning how to live in community on an exciting residential campus. The friendships and life experiences developed by living on campus provide students with many unexpected benefits that positively impact the whole student…academically and socially. Whether in a traditional residence hall, a suite or apartmentstyle room, living and learning together makes the whole Brevard experience more meaningful. You can’t help but stay involved and feel attached to BC if you live right in the middle of where the action is. Working together with BC faculty and staff in our Academic Enrichment Center, students have many additional options for study abroad through our membership in the Appalachian College Association. Additionally, recent trips to Egypt and Iceland are examples of experiences abroad for credit between semesters. Voice of the Rivers Voice of the Rivers (VOR) is one of the hallmarks of Brevard College. VOR consists of a select number of BC students and faculty who engage in a three week expedition focused on the interdisciplinary study of a river.
