TICKET INFORMATION Tickets are required for admission for everyone schoolaged and up. There is no admission charge for infants or pre-school children.

BREVARD COLLEGE FACULTY, STAFF & STUDENTS Brevard College faculty, staff and students receive complimentary general admission to all BC athletic events for themselves and their dependents by presenting a valid college ID card. All guests must enter with the ID card holder to receive complimentary admission. Please note that these are general admissions tickets and do not include exclusive benefits such as reserved seating or hospitality room privileges.

PUBLIC PARKING Public parking is available in the lot adjacent to Boshamer Gymnasium. Parking lots are open to the public prior to the starting time for all home games.

Head Coach Shigeyoshi Shinohara Coach Shinohara joined the staff at Brevard College as the Head Women’s Soccer Coach in the spring of 2009, coming to Brevard from the University of Montevallo where he served as the assistant women’s soccer coach.

In his first year, Coach Shinohara led the women’s soccer team to their first berth in post-season play, reaching the quarterfinals of the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women’s Soccer tournament before bowing out to eventual champion Carson-Newman. The Tornados continued to improve under Coach Shinohara, winning their first South Atlantic Conference regular season contest in the 2010 season, topping Tusculum at the BC Soccer Field by a score of 2-0.

During his time at Montevallo, Shinohara was heavily involved in recruiting for head coach Patricia Hughes, and was also very involved in all facets of the operation of the women’s soccer program. Shinohara started his coaching career in Yamaguchi, Japan where he was the assistant for the Seiki Football Club of a group aged 10-16 from 1994-2001. From there he moved to the United Soccer Academy where he was responsible for the day-to-day administrative operations as well as being a full-time coach where he coached one-on-one sessions with youth players whose ages ranged from 3-18. Shinohara opened his collegiate coaching career in August of 2005 when he became the assistant women’s coach at the University of Montevallo. During his time at Montevallo, the Falcons were the Gulf South Conference Champions in 2007, making it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Tampa in the South Region Championship match. Montevallo also was a Gulf South Tournament finalist in 2008.

In addition to his collegiate work, Shinohara has been a member of the Alabama Olympic Developmental Program staff from August 2005-present, evaluating and training players as well as coaching in spring and summer camps in the district and state. He also coached the 2005 Alabama State Cup Division II Champion South Shelby Futball Club Strikers 93 and assisted with the Birmingham United Soccer Association Alabama State League U15 Division I Champions Lady Jets 92 Blue team in 2006.

Shinohara also holds an NSCAA Premier Diploma and an Advanced National Diploma as well as the F.A. Coaching License and the UEFA “B” Award International Coaching License from the Football Association in England.

Caity Brown Associate Head Coach

Caity Brown enters her third season as the Associate Head Women’s Soccer Coach at Brevard College. Brown graduated from Campbell University with a Bachelor’s of Social Work in the spring of 2009.

While at Campbell, Brown was a member of the women’s soccer team and was awarded to the A-Sun All-Academic Team three of her four years as a student-athlete. She served as an instructor for various soccer camps including Campbell University’s Spring Break Camp and Summer Camp, as well as the Newport News FC Camp.

Brown is a native of Yorktown, VA where she attended Grafton High School. During her high school career she was named All-District and All-Region four times, as well as being named All-State twice.

2009: (Sophomore) Played in 15 games and started twice...Recorded an assist on Sep. 19 against conference opponent Lincoln Memorial.

2011 Season Preview Passion is the theme of the 2011 Brevard College Women’s Soccer team, and with the Tornados fielding their first four year class of seniors who have been members of the South Atlantic Conference throughout their entire playing career, Coach Shigeyoshi Shinohara is excited about the level of play and intensity the team will bring to the pitch in the upcoming season. The Tornados are coming off a year in which they won their first South Atlantic Conference regular season victory, defeating Tusculum College on Sept. 28th at the BC Soccer Field, but missed out on the chance to go back to the postseason as they failed to earn a bid in the 2010 Food Lion SAC tournament. However, this year, featuring a preseason First Team All-SAC forward in junior Allie Hovis, as well as eight returning seniors, the Tornados have an experienced group ready to take the next step this season.

Hovis, a 2010 All-SAC Second Team forward, is coming off a season in which she scored a pair of goals and added an assist in the season. Her technical ability and creative play help set up the Tornados attack and Coach Shinohara will look for her to continue expanding her game as the team looks to move ahead in the season. Senior forwards Bailey Varley and Chelsea Watson will join Hovis up front in the battle for playing time. Varley, a 2011 captain, is the modern BC scoring record holder and led the team for the third straight year with five goals last season including a hat trick against Erskine last year. Watson’s hustle and hard work have seen her play in 33 matches over the last two seasons and her “bulldog” tenacity on the field will help the Tornados throughout the 2011 season. Also returning in a crowded front line are juniors Chantel Azevedo and Teresa Musick, as well as sophomore Elena Crowe. Azevedo is coming back from an injury after a standout freshman campaign and Musick worked hard in the offseason as she makes the transition from defender to forward, showing flashes of ability with a pair of preseason scoring strikes. Crowe returns after scored a trio of goals last year as a true freshman and is a relentless attacker on the net.

Senior midfielder and 2011 captain Chelsea Freeman and senior Caitlin Hubbard return to provide leadership in the midfield. Freeman possesses the ability to set up the attack, with deft touch on the ball and an ability to place it anywhere on the field, while Hubbard contributes toughness and fighting spirit all over the field in a crucial role.

Juniors Hannah Graham and Carolyn Anderson and sophomores Jamie Bundy and Francie Blair return to provide depth in the midfield. Graham is one of the quickest players on the BC team and has the ability to track the ball and turn it into instant scoring chances, while Anderson is fearless in the middle and the BC coaches look for good things from her this year.

2011 Season Preview

Bundy earned critical minutes in the center midfield position as a true freshman and tied for the team lead in shots on goal, while Blair brings versatility to the position, having the ability to play in multiple sets and schemes on the field, as well as multiple positions.

Freshmen Lizzy Graham and Megan Jenkins will also compete for playing time in the midfield for Brevard, with Graham bringing technical excellence to the position, while Jenkins comes into the program after a successful club and high school career and has flashed ability at several positions.

The back row returns the most experience for the Tornados as seniors Alyssa Caracena, Chelsea Freeman fights for the ball Rachael Laughlin and Janet Basinger will line up on the back row for Coach Shinohara. Caracena in a preseason exhibition near midfield has shown flashes of growth in her overall game in her career with the Tornados and is poised to break out this year, while Laughlin and Basinger have been consistent through day one in their time at Brevard and their all-around ability and athleticism has served the Tornados well in their career. Sophomores Lindsay Pritchard and Abigail Rusch also return on the backline. Pritchard, bouncing back from an Achilles’ injury, possesses one of the strongest legs on the team and is called upon to handle all of the team’s free kicks, while Rusch stepped up her play toward the end of last season and her leadership from the center back position will be instrumental in the team’s growth this season. Freshmen Drasti Patel, Ana Drummond, Althea Dunn and Josie Rodriguez will also battle for playing time at the defender position. Patel brings in a high level of endurance and high energy into the program and will provide depth in both the midfield and defense, while Drummond, a converted midfielder, has great field vision which enhances her ability to pass and clear the ball from the back line. Dunn and Rodriguez both come to Brevard after playing careers in Vilseck, Germany, and their transition after playing at a high level of club soccer will help bring a high level of intensity and play to the Tornados team. Returning in between the pipes are all three keepers from last year, senior Jordan Box and sophomores Brittany Webster and Crissy Moran. Box has looked strong in preseason play and the coaching staff relies on her steadiness both on and off the field to lead the team. Webster returns with the most experience in the goal for the Tornados, starting nine matches last season and recording two shutouts, including the conference victory against Tusculum. Moran also returns and brings elite athleticism to the box, making several spectacular plays in goal both last season and in the preseason, and all three keepers are expected to see playing time in the 2011 season. The BC Women’s Soccer team begins the 2011 regular season at home against Erskine College on Sept. 1. Kickoff between the Tornados and the Flying Fleet on the BC Soccer Field is set for 3 p.m.

She was a three-sport athlete, playing both tennis and basketball, along with soccer. On the playing field she was awarded the Golden Boot award which is for most goals scored in a season. She was named the 2010 Sports Woman of the Year at Vilseck, as well as, being named the Scholar Athlete of the Year. She also played ODP Europe under Coach Bill Bidinger while living in Germany. In the classroom, she was a Presidential Honor Roll member in both her junior and senior years. “Thea has had a unique experience having played overseas in Germany. She has competed at a high level in club soccer there and will bring that high level of play here to Brevard. Megan Jenkins Freshman * Midfielder Reidsville, N.C. * Reidsville HS

High School: Jenkins comes to the Tornados from Reidsville, North Carolina. Jenkins attends Reidsville Senior High School where she played soccer for Coach Jarrod Williams. Jenkins also played tennis and was a member of the swim team at Reidsville Senior High School, in addition to being a member of the cheerleading squad. Jenkins led her high school team in scoring with 26 goals during her junior season and was name all-conference in her freshman, sophomore, and junior seasons. Jenkins was an all-region performer in her junior year as well as being named a captain as a junior and senior. In the classroom, Jenkins has been named to the honor roll in every semester, as well as being awarded with the Scholastics Scholarship award her junior year. “Megan is finishing up a successful club and high school career and we are excited to see what she brings to our program. She is versatile, being able to play up top and in the midfield. Josie Rodriguez Freshman * Defender Vilseck, Germany * Vilseck HS

High School: Rodriguez joins the Tornados from Vilseck, Germany, where she played under Coach Kevin Anglim at Vilseck High School. Rodriguez was awarded the Best Defender award for three years and also received the Falcon Award during her time with the Falcons and she was also an All-Region First Team selection. Rodriguez also participated in basketball and cross country, where she was a two-time Falcon award winner. Off the pitch, Rodriguez was on the 3.0-3.5 Honor Roll for two years. “I am very delighted that Josie has decided to join our 2011 recruiting class. She is not only athletic but also works very hard. Her motivation will take her far in this game and will also help to push those around her. In addition, she excels in the classroom and will join the IWIL program here at Brevard. I am excited to see her grow as a leader in both our program and this college in the future.” - Coach Shinohara

The South Atlantic Conference The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker.

South Atlantic Conference

The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions.

In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999).

In July of 1998, Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league, and Lincoln Memorial University began play in the conference in the 2006-07 academic year. 2011 SAC Season Preview Lenoir-Rhyne Tops Women’s Soccer Preseason Coaches’ Poll, All-SAC Team ROCK HILL, S.C. – Lenoir-Rhyne, which finished one win shy of the 2010 NCAA Women’s Soccer Final Four, is a nearly unanimous selection by the SAC coaches to win the 2011 league title, it was announced on Thursday. The Bears, 2010 co-regular season champions and Food Lion SAC Tournament winners, received nine of the 10 first-place votes. L-R is also heavily represented on the preseason All-SAC team, with six first-team selections, including defending conference Player of the Year and Daktronics All-American Catherine Hauck. The Bears also have one student-athlete on the second team. Wingate comes in at No. 2 in the preseason poll. The Bulldogs, runners-up in last season’s Food Lion SAC Tournament, also have two first-team and one second-team preseason All-Conference selections. This includes 2010 first-team All-SAC honorees Izabella Miranda and Kelly Moldenhauer. No. 3 in the poll is Tusculum, which features four preseason All-Conference selections. TC forward Tramicka James is the Pioneers’ lone first-team selection after also being named to the 2010 All-SAC first team. Carson-Newman, which tied Lenoir-Rhyne for the 2010 regular season title is fourth in the coaches’ poll and received the other first-place vote. The Eagles also landed one student-athlete on the preseason All-SAC first team – 2010 first-team selection Trenna Howell – and two on the second team. Next in the poll is Catawba at No. 5, Newberry at No. 6 and Lincoln-Memorial at No. 7. Catawba and Lincoln Memorial each placed two on the preseason All-Conference team, while Newberry has one. Rounding out the coaches’ poll is Mars Hill at No. 8, Anderson at No. 9 and Brevard at No. 10. MHC has two preseason All-SAC selections, and Brevard and Anderson each have one. The SAC women’s soccer season officially kicks off on Sept. 1, and the Food Lion SAC Championship is slated for Nov. 1-6, with the semifinals and final taking place in Rock Hill.

2010 Women’s Soccer Review

2010 Season Review

The BC women’s soccer team continued their development under Coach Shigeyoshi Shinohara as they toppled a conference opponent for the first time in the short Tornados NCAA Division II history and Brevard also saw their first player named to the postseason All-Conference team in Allie Hovis as the Tornados finished the season with a 3-13-1 (1-8 SAC) record. Bailey Varley led the Tornados with four goals on the season and added two assists on the season in leading Brevard with 29 shots on the year. Freshman forward Elena Crowe added three goals and an assist and Nikki Peacock placed two goals Elena Crowe battles for the ball as the in the net to help the Tornados scoring efforts. Tornados compete at the BC Soccer Field Hovis, a sophomore forward, was selected to the 2010 All-SAC postseason team by the SAC Women’s Soccer Coaches after scoring two goals and an assist and showed flashes of brilliance on the field to help BC’s offense. Carolyn Anderson also tied for the BC lead with two assists on the year. Crissy Moran, Brittany Webster and Jordan Box saw the majority of the time in the goal for Coach Shinohara and Coach Caity Brown as the trio combined to allow only 2.73 goals per game and had two shutouts in the season. Webster recorded a team-high 60 saves on the season, while Moran had 54 including two of the BC victories of the season between the pipes. The Tornados opened up the 2010 season with a pair of scrimmages and an exhibition as they took on Montreat College at home, while competing against Milligan College and Warren Wilson College on the road. Brevard remained on the road as they opened the 2010 regular season as they traveled to Due West, S.C. to take on Erskine College. Despite falling behind in the first 25 seconds as the Flying Fleet scored early, the Tornados found the back of the net four times in the first half as Crowe and Hovis both scored, while Varley placed the ball past the keeper twice to give BC the 4-1 halftime lead. Varley completed the hat trick in the second half to give BC the commanding 5-1 lead and though Erskine placed two more goals past the BC keeper, the Tornados walked off the field with the 5-3 victory.

at the BC Soccer Field on September 8th. The Valkyries held the 1-0 halftime lead, but BC came back late in the second half as Laura Smith scored her first collegiate goal in the 81st minute to tie the match up off the assist from Varley. Jamie Bundy took a penalty kick in the closing minutes of the game and drove it past the Valkyries’ keeper to give Brevard the 2-1 win.

After falling in back-to-back games, Brevard continued their run of great play in the early going of the season by taking on Southern Wesleyan at home. The Tornados fought the Warriors to a draw as neither team scored in regulation, with Webster stopping all six of SWU’s shots on goal in recording the shutout.

The Tornados fell in the SAC opener to Lincoln Memorial University, before taking on Tusculum College. Brevard had fallen to the Pioneers in both of their previous encounters before taking on TC at home at the end of September. Brevard was outshot by Tusculum 28-6 in the contest, but Webster was able to keep the Pioneers off the board as Lindsay Pritchard scored the first goal of the game for BC at the 31:43 mark, taking a free kick from just inside the midfield stripe. Pritchard’s offering sailed over the keeper and into the net, giving the Tornados the 1-0 lead. Peacock kept the scoring going in the second half, using a header off the assist from Anderson and Chelsea Freeman in the 79th minute to give BC the commanding 2-0 lead. Webster saw the game to conclusion between the pipes, stopping all 10 of Tusculum’s shots on goal to record the shutout and give the Tornados their first South Atlantic Conference win since Brevard joined the NCAA Division II. The Tornados battled several teams from the conference close the rest of the regular season, but were unable to record the win they needed to advance back to the postseason as they saw their season end against Catawba on October 30th. Brevard loses seniors Katie Donohue and Nikki Peacock, but will field an experienced squad as 22 players return from this past season, including the largest senior class in modern BC women’s soccer history, as well as a talented sophomore class as Coach Shinohara will look to guide the team into the playoffs in the near future.

Financial Aid 94 percent of students receive merit-based and/or need-based scholarships, grants, and loans; $14.5 million in aid was coordinated for Brevard College students in 2009-2010 for 642 students. Residence Halls Four options: three traditional style residence halls and one apartmentstyle residential village primarily for sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Information Technology All academic buildings and residence halls are connected to the campus high-speed fiber-optic network. All residence hall rooms are wired to provide students with access to the campus network and Internet resources. Wireless access is also available at several public campus locations. Athletics Brevard College boasts a distinguished and successful history in intercollegiate athletics, winning nine national team championships as a junior college (1937-2000). During this period, more than 200 Brevard College student athletes received All American honors. After completing the transition to a four-year institution in 2000, the College became an active member of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Over the next eight years, Brevard athletic teams earned 10 conference titles and made 9 national tournament appearances. A new era of Brevard College athletics began in 2006 as the Tornados initiated the transition process from the NAIA to NCAA Division II while also adding football, cycling and cheerleading as varsity sports. Brevard College was officially granted active NCAA Division II and South Atlantic Conference membership status on September 1, 2008. In just two years of eligibility, every single BC Athletic team has either recorded a South Atlantic Conference win or made it to the postseason South Atlantic Conference tournament. Student Involvement Programming on the BC campus is driven almost entirely by student leadership through the Campus Activities Board (CAB) with the support of almost 30 active student organizations and clubs. This is Brevard College Center for Multicultural and Service Initiatives True to the Brevard College motto “Learn in order to serve”, the Center for Multicultural and Service Initiatives (CMSI) is a student-focused office that provides resources and educational opportunities for the campus community. CMSI provides students with volunteer opportunities based on academic and personal interests as well as providing the town of Brevard and surrounding community with passionate and energetic volunteers that will make a difference. Alternative Fall and Spring Break trips, MLK Celebration activities, service to the local domestic violence shelter, preparing meals for the homeless, even working in a community garden are all part of the CMSI outreach program. Service related to federal, state, local and institutional programs is also coordinated through the CMSI. Federal Work Study students are able to work off campus at an approved local non-profit. NC-ACTS!, an AmeriCorps program, rewards students who have served 300 hours in their local community with a $1,100 Education Award. Our EMERGE program fosters positive relationships between current top BC students and incoming new students in order to support academic success and personal growth during the first year of college.

Wellness Center The Stamey Wellness Center offers a warm reception area where students are welcomed and assisted in connecting with professional services and personal help as quickly as possible. Counseling Services provides resources to support and enhance the success of students in the academic and social environment of the college as well as in the personal and developmental aspects of their lives. Medical Services are available to assist students who are sick and to teach preventive measures to stay healthy in order to best achieve academic success. Other unique BC Experiential Programs Institute for Women in Leadership IWIL is a residential learning community that fosters conﬁdent, inquisitive young women with a passion for local service. Through mentoring and experiential leadership programs, IWIL women develop into Brevard College leaders ready to also serve their communities upon graduation. Study Abroad Students can pursue a minor in Spanish while experiencing immersion in the culture as well as the language during a semester in Costa Rica. Working together with BC faculty and staff in our Academic Enrichment Center, students have many additional options for study abroad through our membership in the Appalachian College Association. Voice of the Rivers Voice of the Rivers (VOR) is one of the hallmarks of Brevard College. VOR consists of a select number of BC students and faculty who engage in a three week expedition focused on the interdisciplinary study of a river. Scholarship Information: New freshman and transfer students may qualify for academic scholarships through the Admission Ofﬁce, ranging from $5,500 per year to full tuition. Interim Athletic Director Juan Mascaro

Juan Mascaro is beginning his first year as the Interim Athletic Director, having taken over the reigns of the program in the summer of 2011.

Coach Mascaro is also in fifth year at the helm of the Brevard College men’s soccer program, having taken over the reigns of the program in 2006.

Head Coach Juan Mascaro was selected to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Advisory Committee in 2010-2011 and will help with the gathering and sharing of results for teams within their conference or geographical area, the ranking of the top teams in the region, the provision of input in the selection of officials for the championship, the provision of input in the selection of sites for championship competition and the service as a sounding board for the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Committee.

In 2008, Mascaro led the men’s soccer team to a 5-14-1 record in their inaugural season as members of NCAA Division II and the SAC. The Tornados recorded their first SAC win over Lincoln Memorial, 2-1, on Oct. 24. The highlight of the season came on Oct. 15 when they took Division I Winthrop into double overtime, before falling 2-1. During his time at Brevard, Mascaro has guided the men’s soccer team to a 9-28-2 record, playing a full SAC slate, which includes four NCAA Division II National Tournament participants and the NCAA DII National Championship runner-up. Mascaro comes to Brevard from Campbell University where he spent two seasons as the Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach. During his first season at Campbell, he helped the Fighting Camels to advance into the 2005 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. From this outstanding performance the Camels ended their season with a 6-3-1 league record and 8-9-2 overall. While at Campbell his duties included training the goalkeepers, recruiting coordinator and monitoring the academic progress of the student athletes. Prior to Campbell, he was the Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach for the University of Central Florida for five seasons. During his tenure, the Golden Knights were ranked as high as number-13 nationally and won the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. During his last three seasons with the Golden Knights the team finished with a 35 20-1 overall record. His main areas of responsibilities for the Knights included training the goalkeepers, recruiting coordinator assisting the head coach in all areas of team training.

A native of El Salvador, Mascaro earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration in 1994 and his Master of Arts in Applied Economics in 1999 from the University of Central Florida. He currently holds his NSCAA National Coaching Diploma earned in 1994 and Advanced National Diploma in 1995.

Senior Women’s Administrator Britne Stubbs

Britne Stubbs has taken on the responsibilities as the Senior Woman Administrator at Brevard College, providing a female voice and perspective on key issues and serving as a role model for diversity, inclusion and gender equity in the athletic community. She also will be the liaison with the BC SAAC to work with the committee on developing and carrying out their goals and initiatives as well as promoting community service projects and campus leadership initiatives. In addition, she will also be taking over the vacant position of Director of Champs Life-Skills at Brevard and will help out in Operations and Game Day Administration.

In 2009, Coach Stubbs oversaw the team as the Tornados made the transition to becoming full members of NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference. The BC softball team went 17-27, 2-14 in conference play and was one of four Tornados teams to make it to the SAC Tournament.

In her first season at the helm of the women’s softball program, Coach Stubbs help guide the team to a 13-27 record on the season, an 11game improvement from the 2007 season.

As provisional members of both the NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference in 2008, the Tornados played a very challenging schedule, taking on a number of strong teams throughout the year. Stubbs, who originally hails from Bennettsville, SC, comes to Brevard by way of Tiffin University in Tiffin, OH. At Tiffin, Stubbs served as the assistant softball coach while she completed her master’s degree in business administration. During her two year stint at Tiffin University, the softball program compiled a record of 94-22. Coach Stubbs was a part of two conference AMC championships, two region IX championships and two National Tournament Appearances. Also, Coach Stubbs was a part of two conference coaching staff of the year awards. In 2006, she was a part of Region IX coaching staff of the year.

While at Tiffin University, Stubbs helped tutor five All-Americans, six All-Region performers and seven All Conference Players.

Prior to coaching at Tiffin, Stubbs played softball at Queens University located in Charlotte, NC. Stubbs was named to the CVAC All-Conference first team three times and was her team’s Most Valuable Offensive Player three consecutive seasons spanning from 2002-2005. In the 2005, Stubbs was named the Female Athlete of the Year for Queens University. Stubbs remains as the Queens University stolen base recorder holder, when she stole 39 bases in her senior campaign. In 2005 she was nationally ranked 16th in the nation for stolen bases with 39 and 42nd for batting average for all of NCAA Division II.

BC Athletic Administration

Rob Fiedler, Director of Compliance

Rob Fiedler joined the Brevard College Athletic Department staff in October 2009, taking on the role of Director of Compliance.

Fiedler comes to the Tornados, having served as the Assistant Compliance Coordinator at Syracuse University from 2007-2009.

Rob also utilized compliance software programs, including CAi, LSDBi and the NCAA Eligibility Center website, as well as updating studentathlete information on CAi and other related spreadsheets and databases. He also assisted with administering rules compliance, rules education meetings and other office tasks as assigned.

While at Syracuse, he verified the initial-eligibility for incoming prospective student-athletes and assisted in the administration of student-athlete employment. Rob also served as the primary contact for the distribution of funds for student-athletes from the NCAA/Big East Conference Special Assistance Fund and Student-Athlete Opportunity Fund.

Prior to Syracuse, Rob served as a graduate assistant to the Athletic Director as Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, Pa. from 20052006 where he supervised a student-employee crew for event management, as well as scheduling studentemployees for all athletic events and completing bi-weekly payroll for all operations staff. He also assisted the Assistant to the Athletic Director in different aspects of NCAA rules compliance as well as verifying completion of all NCAA documentation by student-athletes and updating student-athlete contact and participation information in CAi and department spreadsheets. Rob also served as an Athletic Office Intern at Cambridge Springs High School in Cambridge Springs, Pa. from August 2004-December 2004 where he monitored student-athlete eligibility and participated in the athletic budgeting process. Rob graduated from Edinboro University in May of 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education with a concentration in Sport Administration and received his Masters in Sport Management from Slippery Rock University in December of 2006.

Myranda Nash, Assistant to the Athletic Director

Prior to coming to Brevard, Nash served as an Intern with the LenoirRhyne University Athletic Department, where she served with the LR Special Events Director and with the Bears Club from May 2010-August 2010.

She also served as an apprentice at Westcare Sports Medicine where she completed a 70 hour apprenticeship under the supervision of three licensed Physical Therapists in the Fall of 2009.

She also has extensive volunteer experience, having served as a volunteer with REACH of Jackson County, the Community Table of Jackson County and the Jingle Bell 5K Run. She has also served as the Registration Committee Chair for the Mountain Heritage 5K race in October of 2009, and participated in several missions trips throughout the country.

Nash graduated from Western Carolina in August of 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management with a concentration in Exercise Science and Fitness Management and is currently working on her MBA at Western Carolina with a projected graduation date of 2013.

BC Athletic Administration

Carole Futrelle, Director of Marketing & Donor Relations

Carole Futrelle joined the Brevard College Athletic Department staff in August 2009, taking on the role of Director of Marketing & Donor Relations.

Futrelle comes to the Tornados having served as the Executive Director of Carolina Voices based out of Charlotte, N.C. from 19931997 where she developed and maintained relationships with financial contributors and in-kind providers, successfully applying for multiple grants on local, state and national levels. She also managed the day-to-day business operations as well as identifying, recruiting and training new members for supporting committees within both the organizations, as well as the members of the Board of Directors.

Prior to her post as Executive Director, Futrelle served as the Director of Development for Carolina Voices from 1990-1993 where she developed and implemented campaign drives for individual gifts, as well as preparing and completing successful presentations for solicitations of corporate gifts.

Futrelle graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and serves as a volunteer at Providence Presbyterian Church, where she has served as an Elder, Clerk of Session, Youth Advisor and Adult Sunday School Teacher. Carole and her husband Ted live in Brevard and are the proud parents of two children, a son Dan who lives in Brevard with his wife Susan, and a daughter Kelly, who resides in Charlotte.

Seth Montgomery, Athletic Media Relations Director

Seth Montgomery joined the BC Athletic Department Staff after serving the spring of 2009 as the Interim SID as the main contact for volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s golf, women’s basketball, softball and cycling. He also served as an alternate color commentator for BC football, basketball and baseball games.

His primary sports are football, volleyball, men’s basketball, baseball, cycling, tennis and golf.

Seth graduated magna cum laude in December of 2008 from North Greenville University with a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management with a minor in Business Administration.

Montgomery started his work in Sport Information as a studentassistant at North Greenville University, where he worked with the football and baseball teams as both a statistician and radio color commentator.

He also served as the main media contact for the Spartanburg Stingers baseball team in the Coastal Plains League in 2007, serving as the statistician and radio alternate.

Prior to coming to Brevard, Montgomery worked as a media intern at the Arnold Palmer Invitational Golf Tournament at the Bay Hill Country Club in Orlando, Fla. in 2008. In addition to his sport information work, Montgomery is also a member of CoSIDA.

Joshua Smallwood, Head Athletic Trainer

Joshua Smallwood joined the Athletic Department staff in the summer of 2009 and serves as the Head Athletic Trainer.

Prior to coming to Brevard College, Joshua was a graduate assistant at the University of Central Arkansas from August 2007-May 2009 where he provided the primary medical coverage for the Bears men’s and women’s cross country teams, men’s soccer and track and field, as well as assisting with basketball and football.

Joshua started his athletic training career at Appalachian State University, where he worked as a Head Athletic Training Student responsible for helping provide coverage for football, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s basketball.

Joshua received his Master’s degree from the University of Central Arkansas in Kinesiology and Physical Education in May of 2009. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State in 2007 in Athletic Training.

He is currently working on the manuscript for his original research project on the “Effects of an Ankle Support on Ankle Range of Motion in Male Collegiate Soccer Players” which was the topic of his graduate thesis at the University of Central Arkansas. He hopes to submit the manuscript for publishing in a peer reviewed journal in the Summer of 2010. He enjoys watching the Washington Nationals and participating in outdoor activities in his spare time. He and his wife Cathy live in Horse Shoe with their dog Lia.

Joshua Owen, Associate Athletic Trainer

Josh Owen joined the staff at Brevard College in 2008. His primary sport responsibilities are with the Tornado volleyball, women’s basketball, and softball teams. He is actively involved in continuing education as he has taken and continues to take a variety of courses from the Postural Restoration Institute.

Josh comes to Brevard College from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., where he graduated with honors and earned his Bachelor’s degree in 2007. While at ASU, Josh worked with the football team and other varsity sports in the Mountaineer Athletic Training Department.

Josh is currently single and lives in Brevard. He enjoys the outdoors in his free time.
