Gil Coan Field The Gil Coan Baseball Field was named after Gil Coan, BC Class of 1940. Coan was a three-sport star for the Tornados in baseball, basketball and football. He signed a baseball contract with the minor league Chattanooga Lookouts in early ‘44. With a batting average around .375, he was minor leaguer of the year in 1945 and on his way to the majors. Coan spent 11 seasons in the big leagues. He was with the Senators from 1946 to 1953, then made stops with the Orioles, White Sox and Giants from 1954 to 1956. His best years were 1950 and ‘51, when he posted back-to-back .303 batting averages. His lifetime mark in the majors is .254, 731 hits in 2,877 at-bats. He had 39 home runs and 278 runs batted in. He also tied a major league record hitting two triples in a same inning on April 21, 1951. Coan is a member of the Brevard College Sports Hall of Fame. The school’s baseball park is named Gil Coan Field.

Matt McCay Head Coach * Hitting/Catching Coach
UNC-Chapel Hill, 2006 * First year at Brevard (4th year coaching)
Coach Matt McCay joined the Brevard College Baseball staff as the head coach in the summer of 2010, coming to the program after serving as an assistant coach for the Tarheels for three years, where he assisted in all areas of the UNC program, but worked specifically with the hitters and catchers.
In addition to his on-field work, McCay worked closely with the Tar Heels’ strength and conditioning program and with the team’s nutritionist regarding all team meals. He also assisted with on-campus recruiting and other administrative duties.
McCay was an instrumental part of Carolina’s run to the 2008 and 2009 College World Series and he has worked with a pair of catchers that were selected in the first seven rounds of the Major League Baseball Draft Tim Federowicz and Mark Fleury - over the past two seasons. In the summer of 2008, McCay skippered the Thomasville Hi-Toms to the Coastal Plain League Petitt Cup Tournament title. Prior to joining the UNC staff, McCay worked as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Hillsborough’s Orange High School, for seven seasons and spent the summer of 2007 working as a coach and instructor at the Impact Baseball showcase camps and with Dirtbag Baseball, an elite North Carolina-based travel team. McCay graduated from Carolina in December 2006 with a degree in exercise and sport science after playing six years of independent league professional baseball. McCay played the 2000-03 seasons with the Chillicothe (Ohio) Paints of the Frontier League. He was a threetime all-star selection, earned a spot on the organization’s all-time team and was named the team’s MVP in 2003. He ranks as the Paints’ record holder in both career and single-season hits (2002). Before returning to Chapel Hill to finish his degree, McCay played the 2004 and 2005 seasons with the Northern League’s Joliet (Illinois) Jackhammers. McCay played for Fox for two seasons at North Carolina Wesleyan (1997-98) before joining him in Chapel Hill for the 1999 and 2000 campaigns. In two seasons at Carolina, McCay hit .297 with seven home runs and 78 RBI in 119 games as an outfielder. While at Wesleyan, he was a second-team NCAA Division III All-America and also earned all-region and allconference honors in 1998 when he hit .441 with 10 homers and 60 RBI. McCay also led the team in hitting as a freshman with a .391 average. Coach McCay and his wife Julie reside in Brevard, N.C., with their daughter, Ella.

Kevin Allingham Assistant Coach/JV Coach * Pitching Coach

Coach Allingham will help out the Brevard College baseball program and Coach McCay by serving as the recruiting coordinator, pitching coach, scheduling director and will assist in summer placement and grounds management. Coach Allingham will also serve as the Tornados Head JV Baseball Coach.
Coach Allingham comes to the Tornados, having served as an assistant baseball coach at Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C. since 2002, where he was the Head JV Coach, while also serving as the pitching coach and coordinating recruiting efforts for the Monarchs. He also assisted the head coach with administrative duties, travel, all phases of camps. Prior to Methodist, Coach Allingham served as the baseball administrative assistant from 2001-2002 at Virginia Commonwealth University where he organized and promoted camps, assisted with travel coordination, organized scouting and game charts and completed NCAA compliance paperwork. Coach Allingham also spent four years at Catawba College as a baseball undergraduate assistant coach from 1997-2001 where he coached first base, helped design and run practice and worked with the outfielders. Allingham also helped the Indians by soliciting meal and game sponsors, scheduling games, recruiting, organizing scouting charts and designing and administering strength and conditioning programs. Coach Allingham also served two years as an assistant coach with various programs in the Coastal Plain Summer Collegiate Wood Bat League, where he coached first base, positioned defense and assisted with game management. In addition to his work as a coach, Allingham also served as a staff members at various baseball camps held in various locations, including Florida State, Clemson, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, North Carolina State, Duke, Old Dominion, Appalachian State, Virginia Wesleyan, Pfeiffer and Eastern Connecticut State. Coach Allingham graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree from Catawba College and earned his Masters’ degree in Sports Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Sean Walsh Assistant Coach * Hitting Coach
N.C. State, 2003 * First year at Brevard (3rd year coaching) Coach Walsh will help out the Brevard College baseball program and Coach McCay by primarily serving as the hitting coach in helping to direct the team offense. Coach Walsh will also be in charge of the infield defense, while managing team defensive positioning. He will also serve as the director of team travel.
Prior to coming to Brevard, Coach Walsh served as the Head Baseball Coach of the Carolina Naturals based in Durham, N.C. where he coached high school players aspiring to play college baseball with a focus on skill development. Walsh worked from 2007-2008 with M.V.P. Baseball in Raleigh, N.C., serving as Assistant Baseball Coach where he coached the Showcase team, working primarily with players on hitting and fielding. Before his coaching career, Walsh was drafted in the 47th round of the 2001 Major League Baseball draft by the Philadelphia Phillies and spent four years in the Phillies program playing in the minor leagues from levels of Low-A to Double A, where he spent time on the field as an infielder, outfielder and catcher. Walsh was also named the Organizational Player of the Month for June of 2003. Walsh also played for the Fullerton Flyers in the Golden League in 2005 where he was a Golden League All-Star and Gold Glove Award Winner at Third Base, while finishing second in the league with a .357 batting average. In 2006, he played with the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the Northern League where he was a Northern League All-Star. Walsh played two years at North Carolina State University where he played shortstop and third base for the Wolfpack, being named to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Tournament team in 2001. Prior to N.C. State, Walsh played at Radford University where he was on the Big South All-Conference team in 2000 as a member of the Highlanders. In addition to his playing career, Coach Walsh also was influential in organizing and facilitating a travel team tournament to help raise money for the American Cancer Society in 2009 and participated in the D.A.R.E Child Mentoring program in 2003.
Seth Williams
Assistant Coach * Strength/Conditioning Coach UNC-Chapel Hill, 2008 * First year at Brevard (1st year coaching)
Coach Williams will help out the Brevard College baseball program and Coach McCay by serving as the Director of Strength and Conditioning for the program. He will also be in charge of outfield play and positioning, offensive instruction, base-running and will assist in summer placement.
Coach Williams spent the past three years playing in the New York Mets organization, having been drafted by the Mets in June of 2008. Williams played for the Kingsport Mets Rookie League and Brooklyn Cyclones Class A teams in 2008 and played for the St. Lucie Mets in the Florida State League Advanced A League in 2009 and the Spring of 2010, before being called up to play for the Binghamton Mets AA team in 2010.
Prior to his professional baseball career, Coach Williams was a four-year letter winner at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, being named a Freshman All American, while setting the new freshman home run record with 13 home runs. Coach Williams was also a member of the UNC Regional and Super Regional Champions in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and was a college World Series Finalist in 2006 and 2007. He also received a number of honors based on his statistics throughout his storied collegiate career, as well as summer baseball league play. Among other related experience Coach Williams has had, includes being a member of Athletes in Action, assisting in baseball camps, volunteering at numerous community events and participating in Community Service Activities sponsored by the Mets organization, including going to elementary schools to discuss the importance of living a healthy lifestyle with a consistent exercise regimen and a healthy diet. Coach Williams has eight years of experience in strength and conditioning and held the UNC weightlifting record in each of the four years in the baseball program.

2011 BC Baseball Season Preview Coach Matt McCay and the Brevard College baseball team know a series of challenges awaits them as they begin the 2011 baseball season, but the team and the coaching staff look to face those challenges head-on as the Tornados begin their third season as full members of the NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference. The Tornados finished up the 2010 season with a 9-35 record, going 2-21 in South Atlantic Conference competition and finishing up 5-16 at home at Gil Coan Field. The Tornados did have several bright spots from last season, including a three game home winning streak and several series splits and will look to continue to develop on those wins as they prepare for the five game road trip that starts the 2011 year. With the roster turnover, competition is the theme of this year’s training camp as the battle for starting positions was fierce during both the fall practices and early this spring, with many newcomers seeking to establish their places in the Brevard lineup.

On the mound, Coach McCay looks to begin the season with several talented men competing for starting spots, including senior right hander Jacob White and sophomore righty Brennan Daniels. White and Daniels combined for 21 starts and 29 appearances on the rubber last season and return as the veteran leaders on the mound. Also projected to be in the starting rotation are Pfeiffer University transfer Casey Smith and freshman left-hander, Zack Simpson, while returners Jacob Koontz, Joseph Lepore and others may also work themselves into the rotation with quality outings at the beginning of the season. Smith joins the Tornados after appearing in 13 games on the mound for the Falcons, throwing 16.1 innings in relief for Pfeiffer last season and is ready to make the next step in his development, while Simpson, a West Rowan High School graduate, was an AllConference and All-County selection and was a two-time State Games participant in high school and will provide balance to the righthanded heavy Brevard pitching staff. A trio of transfers will be setting up camp behind the plate this season to call the games for Brevard this year as junior Zack Merriken, sophomore Christian Christopoulos and freshman James Pegram will battle for playing time. All three catchers will have a big role in the Tornados success this season and take pride in working with the pitching staff and running the team defense. Merriken comes to the Tornados from Catawba Valley Community College, where he appeared in 49 games with the Buccaneers, recording a .352 batting average while hitting six home runs. Christopoulos transferred to Brevard from St. Peter’s College in New Jersey, where he appeared in 33 games with the Peacocks, while Pegram came to Brevard from Winthrop University and was a high school standout at Waccamaw High School in Pawleys Island, S.C., where he was an All-Region performer.
Around the infield, Randy O’Dell and Alex Bedenbaugh will look at potentially sharing time at first base. O’Dell, a transfer from Lenoir Community College, recorded a .481 batting average in 25 games with the Lancers last season and is expected to provide a solid bat as well as good defense around first, while Bedenbaugh, a 2010 BC redshirt, returns to the squad and was an All-Region performer at Mid-Carolina High School.
Competition is the name of the game the rest of the way around the diamond as several players on the team showcase the athletic ability to help Brevard at multiple positions on the field and make an impact on the 2011 roster.
Juniors Kramer Clark, Steele Myers and Aaron Reese, sophomores Derek Ham and Christopoulos and freshman McKenzie Queen are all expected to have opportunities to showcase their skills in the middle infield this season, with Clark, Ham, Reese, Queen and Christopoulos all expecting to challenge for playing time at second base, while Steele and Ham will look to challenge for the starting shortstop position.

Clark returns having hit .318 in his sophomore year with the Tornados, bringing a consistent bat to the top-half of the Brevard lineup last season, finishing third on the team with 50 hits. Ham also provided a good stick for the Tornados, hitting .341 in his first year in collegiate baseball, while also flashing the leather in recording a .972 fielding percentage in 22 games’ action. Reese looks to provide leadership, as the junior is also a quarterback on the BC football team, while Queen provides a left-handed bat and was an All-Conference selection at Smoky Mountain High School.
Myers, a transfer from Division I Virginia Military Institute, appeared in 50 games over two years with the Keydets and stood out in the VMI lineup last season, hitting .288, while providing a solid glove in the field.
Third base will also receive its fair share of competition as well as sophomore Brett Brinson will be joined by Reese, Clark, Queen and Christopoulos in fighting for the starting position. Brinson played in 19 games last season for the Tornados, hitting .333 while driving in seven runs and had a .939 fielding percentage and will look to improve in all categories as he begins his second season with Brevard.

Around the outfield, athleticism and speed reign in what Coach McCay calls one of Brevard’s strongest assets this season as returners Ron Patterson and Tyler Parker will duke it out with newcomers Kameron Armacost, Ethan Pressley, Zak Beard and Champ Stuart. Patterson started all 43 games in centerfield for the Tornados last season, and the senior finished the season as one of the Tornados top defenders, while also providing steady offense in scoring 21 runs. Parker also returns after redshirting in 2010 and has shown versatility among the outfield positions, potentially seeing time at all three this season. Armacost transferred in from Hagerstown Community College, where the Littlestown, Pa. native appeared in 81 games for the Hawks, hitting .292, while driving in 14 runs, while Pressley comes in with impressive credentials, as the sophomore was a three-time All-WAC selection with the North Henderson High School Knigths. Freshmen Beard and Stuart will also challenge for playing time with Beard joining the Tornados from West Henderson High School, while Stuart was an All-Conference and All-State performer at Christ School. Late in the game, Coach McCay will look to turn the ball over to the revamped Tornados bullpen, led by veterans Koontz, Lepore, Alex Litaker, Casey Burnette and Josh Case, as well as newcomers Michael Bradley, Kevin Hamilton, Will Bullock and Dustin Haithcox. Koontz led the Tornados with 22 appearances last season, pitching 40 innings and striking out 31, while Lepore, Litaker, Burnette and Case combined for 33 appearances for Brevard, including 15 in conference play and recorded three of Brevard’s nine victories last season. White also has seen time in the bullpen and could also help the Tornados in the late innings. Right-handers Bradley and Hamilton both possess live arms, with Bradley coming in having received the Brevard High School MVP honor in his junior and senior seasons, while Hamilton finished his high school career as the Northwest Cabarrus High School all-time career saves leader. Lefties Bullock and Haithcox will provide balance to the pitching staff, with Bullock having played on the MVP National team and was a participant in the Disney Classic, while Haithcox was an All-Conference and All-County selection with the Eastern Randolph High School Wildcats. The Tornados begin the 2011 season on February 5th as they open the season on the road in a neutral game doubleheader against the St. Andrews Presbyterian Knights.

The South Atlantic Conference The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker.

In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. In July of 1998, Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league, and Lincoln Memorial University began play in the conference in the 2006-07 academic year. 2011 SAC Preseason Information Catawba Picked To Win 2011 SAC Baseball Championship
2011 Preseason Men’s Baseball All-SAC Team
Catawba College, which won the 2010 Food Lion Tournament title, is the favorite to win the 2011 South Atlantic Conference baseball championship in a vote of the league’s head coaches, the conference announced. Catawba received six first-place votes and 94 total points. The Indians went 40-13 last season and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the third year in a row. The Indians placed six on the preseason All-Conference team, including returning SAC Pitcher of the Year Nathan Furr. Furr went 6-0 last season with a 4.06 ERA.
FIRST TEAM
Joining Furr on the preseason All-Conference first team from Catawba is relief pitcher Wil Huneycutt. Three more Indians were named to the second team: Pitcher Nick Lomascolo, who led the SAC with a 3.45 ERA last season; designated hitter Garrett Furr, the 2010 SAC Freshman of the Year; and outfielder Ryan Bostian. Wingate University, the 2010 regular-season champions, are picked to finish second. The Bulldogs, under first-year coach Jeff Gregory, received four first-place votes and 86 total points. Wingate placed four on the preseason All-Conference team. Brian Yeung at first base, shortstop Chris Vazquez and outfielder Dodson McPherson were named to the first team, while pitcher Chris Nelson was named to the second team. Vazquez hit .382 and was among the conference leaders in total hits and doubles last season. Carson-Newman College is picked to finish third with 78 points. Pitcher Austin Bridgewater, who went 5-1 with a 4.32 ERA last season, was a preseason All-Conference first team selection. Tusculum College received 73 points to finish in fourth place in the poll. The Pioneers placed three on the preseason All-Conference team. Catcher Sean Cotton, who was second in the conference with 69 RBIs last season, is joined on the first team by pitcher Tyler Collins and second baseman Payden Houser, who hit .404 last season. Mars Hill College is predicted to finish fifth. The Lions received 59 points. Outfielder Rusty Smith was named to the preseason All-Conference first team, while catcher Adam Lewis and relief pitcher Tony Hearrell were both named to the second team. Smith hit .352 with 57 RBI, Lewis hit .398 with 55 RBI last season, while Hearrell was 4-1 with six saves. Lincoln Memorial University received 54 points for sixth place. The Railsplitters placed three on the preseason All-Conference team with third baseman John Couch and outfielder Cody Pack on the first team, while outfielder Cody Baker was named to the second team. Pack was among the conference leaders in home runs and RBIs last season, while Baker was among the leaders with a .407 batting average. Lenoir-Rhyne University is seventh with 39 points. The Bears return preseason AllConference first-team designated hitter Brian Dice, who was second in the SAC with a .435 batting average last season while hitting 16 home runs and driving in 59 runs. Shortstop Dalton Hall and outfielder Stephen Andrews were named to the second team.
Newberry College is ninth with 27 points. The Wolves, under first-year coach Russell Triplett, placed two on the preseason All-Conference second team. Pitcher Josh McElwee, who led the league in strikeouts in 2008 and 2009, is joined by third baseman Chris Love. Brevard College rounds out the poll with 11 points. The Tornados will be looking to move up in the standings under first-year coach Matt McCay. The 2011 baseball season starts Tuesday, February 1 four games. Catawba and Mars Hill open on the road, while Lenoir-Rhyne and Wingate open at home. The 2011 Food Lion SAC Baseball Tournament will be April 20-23 in Forest City, N.C. at McNair Field. The top six teams at the end of the regular season will advance to the conference tournament. Anderson University received 29 points for eighth place. The Trojans placed two on the preseason All-Conference second team in first baseman Erick Sanderson and second baseman Ryan Saxon.

2010 BC Baseball Season in Review With 24 underclassmen on the team, Coach Todd Anderson knew the season would be one of growing for the 2010 Brevard College baseball team, but the team showed promise throughout the season, competing with everyone they faced on the field and capped the season with a victory over the eventual South Atlantic Conference tournament champion Catawba. Brevard finished with a 9-35 overall record, going 2-22 against South Atlantic Conference competition. The Tornados went 5-16 at Gil Coan Field on the season, recording a three-game winning streak at home at one point. The Tornados opened the season on a seven Ron Patterson tracks the ball off the game skid, falling to Anderson, Erskine, Mars Hill bat in a game against North Greenville and Tusculum, before rebounding in the third game of their series at Pioneer Field. Brevard took the lead in the third inning of the game against Tusculum as Stephen Mullis scored on Kellen Moman’s RBI single to right field, before scoring three runs in the fourth, benefitting from two Pioneers errors. Mathew Pruitt pitched a complete game, going all seven innings while getting two strikeouts in the victory. Brevard fell in their next series to Lincoln Memorial, as the Railsplitters took all three games on Gil Coan Field, but Brevard turned around to rally, sweeping visiting Indiana University of Pennsylvania on March 9th, recording a 12-11 victory behind Mullis’ game-winning RBI, then took the second game 11-9 as Jackie Corn supplied the offense, with a pair of home runs including the game-winner in the bottom of the sixth to give the Tornados the win. Buoyed by their victories, the Tornados took their next game, avenging an earlier defeat to the Anderson Trojans as Pruitt drove in three runs and Joseph Lepore recorded his second victory on the mound in two days as the Tornados won 4-3.
The Tornados fell in their next series to SAC opponent Lenoir-Rhyne, before hosting Milligan on March 16th at home. Brevard put up five runs in both the first and the third innings and Mullis drove two Buffaloes pitches out of the park to stake the Tornados to the lead as Shane Galloway went six innings for his first win of the season as the Tornados defeated the Buffaloes 13-9.
Brevard recorded its next victory on March 24th on the road in Bristol, Va. against Virginia Intermont. After dropping the first game of the doubleheader to the Cobras, the Tornados exploded, putting 15 runs on the board for their highest offensive output of the season. game, driving in six runs in the contest, including a bases-clearing double in the top of the first and Galloway received his second win of the season.
The Tornados would struggle for the remainder of March heading into April, dropping their next nine games before the rematch on Senior Day against Virginia Intermont held on Gil Coan Field. The Cobras again took the first game of the contest, 9-7. In game two, Virginia Intermont went up 4-0 after the first inning, but the Tornados rallied back with runs in the first, second and fourth innings before Ron Patterson scored the go-ahead run in the fifth, coming in to score on Vance Crook’s sacrifice fly as the Tornados took the second game, 9-6.

Galloway took the mound for the Tornados in their next game as Brevard traveled to Salisbury, N.C. to take on #26-ranked Catawba College. Moman drove a two-run shot over the right centerfield fence and Mullis drove in three runs as well, as the Tornados staked Galloway to a 10-1 lead. The senior from Rosman, N.C. went the distance in the game, striking out eight and surviving a late rally by the Indians as Brevard defeated Catawba 10-6. Brevard finished up the season with one final victory as the Tornados traveled to Bristol, Tenn. to take on King College. Brett Brinson drove in a pair of runs with a double down the left field line in the sixth inning and Eric Renegar and Kramer Clark each had RBI singles as the Tornados took the first game of the doubleheader. Brennan Daniels received his second win of the season, going six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. Mullis led the team in most statistical categories on the offensive side, leading the team with a .377 batting average, with 61 hits, 35 runs scored, 18 doubles and 103 total bases. Mullis and Corn tied for the overall team lead in home runs with eight apiece and Moman led the team in RBIs, driving in 36 on the season. Mullis was also recognized among the SAC offensive leaders in doubles, finishing up the regular season tied for third overall. On the mound, Galloway led the way, recording a 7.40 earned run average with two complete games out of his three victories. Relief ace Jacob Koontz led the Tornados with 22 appearances, while Jacob White led the team with 11 games started and 42 strikeouts. The Tornados lose six seniors out of this year’s team, including Galloway, Crook, Corn, M.A. Dozier, Michael Calhoun and Austin McCullough, but return the bats of Mullis, Moman and Pruitt among others as the Tornados will look for their youth to grow from this season with the ultimate goal of earning a South Atlantic Conference Tournament Berth.

Financial Aid 94 percent of students receive merit-based and/or need-based scholarships, grants, and loans; $14.5 million in aid was coordinated for Brevard College students in 2009-2010 for 642 students. Residence Halls Four options: three traditional style residence halls and one apartmentstyle residential village primarily for sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Information Technology All academic buildings and residence halls are connected to the campus high-speed fiber-optic network. All residence hall rooms are wired to provide students with access to the campus network and Internet resources. Wireless access is also available at several public campus locations. The campus network consists of a server farm, student labs, library lab, as well as faculty and staff PCs. Special computer labs are provided for Art and Music students in the Sims Art Center and Dunham Music Center. Athletics Brevard College boasts a distinguished and successful history in intercollegiate athletics, winning nine national team championships as a junior college (1937-2000). During this period, more than 200 Brevard College student athletes received All American honors. After completing the transition to a four-year institution in 2000, the College became an active member of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Over the next eight years, Brevard athletic teams earned 10 conference titles and made 9 national tournament appearances. A new era of Brevard College athletics began in 2006 as the Tornados initiated the transition process from the NAIA to NCAA Division II while also adding football, cycling and cheerleading as varsity sports. Brevard College was officially granted active NCAA Division II and South Atlantic Conference membership status on September 1, 2008. In just two years of eligibility, every single BC Athletic team has either recorded a South Atlantic Conference win or made it to the postseason South Atlantic Conference tournament. The men’s basketball team won Brevard’s first South Atlantic Conference Championship and the Cycling team was named the 2009 Fall Mountain Bike National Champions. Brevard has also seen multiple athletes and coaches receive both All- Conference and All-Region recognition as the Tornados look to establish a pattern of success both in the NCAA and the South Atlantic Conference. Dr. Drew Van Horn, BC President
Dr. Drew Van Horn assumed the presidency of Brevard College on September 30, 2002. He is the third president of Brevard College since it became a four-year institution.
Under President Van Horn’s leadership, the institution continues to challenge students to integrate knowledge and practical experience so that they can become competent, confident and responsible citizens, serving their local and global communities.
To that end, Brevard College offers varied programs and opportunities to its students that form the foundation for pursuing further formal study, meaningful vocations and life-long personal and professional development.
Since taking the helm, President Van Horn has led collaborative efforts to enhance Brevard College’s commitment to engage and educate its students in the theoretical and applied liberal arts.
In 2004, President Van Horn led one of the most ambitious capital campaigns in Brevard College’s history. By the conclusion of the campaign in May 2006, the College exceeded its $14 million target by more than $5 million. Funds raised from the campaign were used to provide significant student scholarships; increase the College’s endowment; enhance student enrollment and retention efforts; and renovate many of the College’s facilities, including residence halls and classrooms. During his tenure, Brevard College has also added new academic programs, including psychology, criminal justice and teacher education licensure. The College also moved from the NAIA to NCAA Division II and added football, cycling and cheerleading as varsity sports.

Most recently, President Van Horn initiated a five-year strategic plan for the College that encourages meaningful service; promotes student engagement; models environmental stewardship; strengthens financial resources; expands employee support; and enhances campus infrastructure. Campus-wide efforts on those six commitments are ongoing.
Kim Pate, BC Director of Athletics
Kim Pate, BC Director of Athletics
Kim Pate is the Director of Athletics at Brevard College. Pate currently oversees the entire 18 varsity sport athletic program at Brevard.
She is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) and is on the NCAA Division II Membership Committee. In 2010, Pate was elected vice chair of the Membership Committee and will represent the committee on the Membership Fund Selection Committee.
Prior to becoming Athletic Director, she served in the capacity of Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Business and Senior Woman Administrator. Pate began her tenure as an Associate Director of Business working in the business office under the Vice President for Business & Finance, and made the transition to Athletics in 2006. Pate has been instrumental in developing a Model NCAA Division II compliance program during the transitional process from NAIA to NCAA Division II. She orchestrated the completion of the NCAA Division II provisional membership process under the leadership of President Van Horn in August of 2008 as the Tornados made the transition from provisional members to full NCAA Division II members competing in the South Atlantic Conference.
Pate, a 2003 graduate of Brevard College, was a two time NAIA Academic All-American athlete and a four year starter for the BC softball team. She ended her playing career with a .377 batting average and holds the BC softball record for most hits. Pate graduated Summa Cum Laude from Brevard, earning a bachelor’s degree in Business & Organizational Leadership. She earned her master’s Degree in Business Administration from Western Carolina University in the summer of 2008.
