Head Coach Nicole Bumgarner

Nicole Bumgarner Appalachian State * First year at Brevard Bumgarner comes to Brevard from her previous position as Assistant General Manager and Head Teaching Professional at Brevard Health and Racquet Club.

“I’m excited to be working with both the men’s and women’s programs, in developing them as collegiate players and quality student-athletes both on and off the court,” commented Coach Bumgarner. “I look forward to coming into a quality program and improving on what Coach Thomson has accomplished as we look to take it to the next level.”

Bumgarner’s previous tennis experience includes working as the Tennis Director at High Hampton Inn in Cashiers, N.C., as well as working with the Brevard Racquet Club from 1981-1988 and more recently, 20072010. Bumgarner also served as an Assistant Tennis Professional at the Hendersonville Country Club from 1993-2000, and was a teacher and coach at Brevard High School and Davidson River School, teaching Health and Physical Education, Biology and Life Skills, while also coaching Tennis, Track and Softball. Other experience by Bumgarner includes serving at Temple Baptist Church as a Family and Youth Minister from August of 2005 to December of 2007, serving as the Transylvania Community Hospital Volunteer Coordinator from 1999-2005 and was the Whitewater Cove Group Home Director from 1996-1999. Bumgarner also implemented the Safe and Drug Free Schools grant for Transylvania County Schools from 19931998 as a Safe Schools Coordinator. Bumgarner’s collegiate experience includes being selected as an All-American in singles play at Peace College, while also being named an All-American honorable mention in doubles play in her freshman year. She then transferred to Appalachian State University, where she played #1 singles and doubles before her career was ended after three shoulder surgeries. “Tennis has always had a lot of community support from Brevard, and I’d like to build on that support to bring more people to the matches,” said Bumgarner. “In turn, I think it leads the student-athletes here at Brevard College to get a great college experience, and not just with the school, but really makes them feel at home when they think of Brevard.”

The South Atlantic Conference The South Atlantic Conference has experienced and enjoyed over 30 years of athletic tradition and excellence. The conference has been tremendously successful due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions.

The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. 2010 BC Men’s Tennis Season in Review Returning two All-Conference players and adding several key freshmen and transfers, Coach Paul Thomson knew his team had a chance to exceed last year’s result of the Tornados falling in the 2009 SAC Quarterfinals. The Tornados went 8-12 on the season, 4-4 in conference play to earn the #6 seed in the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament. Brevard opened the season in the fall, playing in several exhibitions, including the BC Fall Mountain Invitational, but weather dampened play and the Tornados were only able to complete Week One of the two week event.

The BC Men’s Tennis team opened up the regular season in February against a pair of Division I opponents in Wofford and UNC Asheville. The Tornados fell 7-0 in both matches to open the season down 0-2. After two weeks off, the Tornados hosted Lander on February 26th, falling to the visiting Bearcats 7-2. The Tornados recorded their first victory of the season on the road in Newberry, S.C., defeating SAC opponent Newberry College, 5-4. Scott McCormick won points in singles and doubles for the Tornados and freshman Dorian Feron clinched the match at the No. 4 single position with his 6-0, 6-3 victory. Brevard opened the month of March with a 7-2 loss to Limestone before heading to Hilton Head, S.C. After opening up the trip by falling to Northern Kentucky, the Tornados hit a stride going on a three match winning streak. The streak began on March 9th against Malone College as McCormick clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. The second victory also came in Hilton Head as the team snapped their losing streak against Division I opponents as the Tornados swept all three doubles matches and Feron clinched his second victory of the season as Brevard topped George Mason, 4-3.

Brevard’s third straight victory came against Peach Belt opponent North Georgia as the Tornados took five of the six singles matches in the win over the Saints. Feron clinched his third match of the season with a victory at No. 6 singles in the 6-3 victory.

2010 BC Men’s Tennis Season in Review

The Tornados dropped their next two matches, falling in SAC competition to Wingate and Tusculum, before their match against North Greenville was cancelled.

The cancellation was just the motivation the team needed, as they responded with back to back victories in the South Atlantic Conference at home, defeating Catawba on March 31st by sweeping all six singles matches and McCormick clinched the Senior Day victory for Brevard against Mars Hill in the 5-4 win.

Scott McCormick lines up for a forehand smash down the line against Mars Hill

The Tornados dropped their next four matches before finishing up the season with an 8-1 victory on the road over SAC opponent Lenoir-Rhyne. The Tornados made it to the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament as the #6 seed and faced off with a familiar opponent in the first round, taking on Tusculum at the Rock Hill Tennis Center. The Tornados avenged their 5-4 defeat to the Pioneers in the Tournament, as Feron clinched his fourth match of the season, winning at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-2. The victory placed Brevard in the SAC Tournament Semifinals for the first time, but the season ended in the semis as the Tornados fell to Wingate in a tightly contested match, dropping to the Bulldogs, 5-4. McCormick was named to the South Atlantic Conference All-SAC First Team after a season which saw the junior go 12-7 at No. 1 singles, 7-1 in SAC singles play. The Tornados lose two seniors in Andrew Thompson and Travis Wireback, but retain the bulk of the team as all eight returners gained valuable experience this season as Brevard looks to achieve its goal of reaching the NCAA Regional Tournament.

Cole Altizer and Jarred Fisher battle at No. 2 doubles for Coach Thomson 39

The BC Experience Beyond the Classroom

Life outside the classroom. Your life outside the classroom at BC is just as important to us as the knowledge you’re gaining in class. There are many ways for you to stand out, but the first step is just to get involved. Experiences outside of the classroom compliment your formal educational experience by helping to facilitate your holistic development. Life doesn’t happen in a textbook, nor does the total Brevard experience. We help students by facilitating their growth as responsible and effective individuals while living in a cohesive campus community.

Student Involvement Programming on the BC campus is driven almost entirely by student leadership through the Campus Activities Board (CAB) with the support of almost 30 active student organizations and clubs. Saturday nights, CAB Wire features comedians, live music, and more. Students can build leadership and problem solving skills, while networking with other students, staff, faculty, and administrative leaders through the Student Government Association and our campus-wide shared governance model. You know what they say, “all work and no play…”. Whether you are interested in staying healthy or simply blowing off some steam after an exam, you can do both by enjoying friendly competition through the many different intramural sports we offer. Through the Campus and Outdoor Recreation program, students are able to experience programs that will lead to learning new skills, developing leadership abilities, and enhancing overall wellness while enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings. Whether you are a skilled rock climber or interested in climbing into a kayak for the very first time, we’ve got all kinds of opportunities for all types of students.

5 Fast Facts: • Student-faculty ratio is 11:1 • 40+ majors/minors, pre-professional studies and teacher licensure • Over 650 students from 35 states and 13 foreign countries; • One of the top 40 college towns in the US – Outside Magazine • One of the top performing arts centers in the south: The Porter Center for the Performing Arts

Community Living Living on campus is an integral part of the total educational experience at Brevard College. Community Living staff members assist students in learning how to live in community on an exciting residential campus. The friendships and life experiences developed by living on campus provide students with many unexpected benefits that positively impact the whole student…academically and socially. Whether in a traditional residence hall, a suite or apartmentstyle room, living and learning together makes the whole Brevard experience more meaningful. You can’t help but stay involved and feel attached to BC if you live right in the middle of where the action is.

Center for Multicultural and Service Initiatives True to the Brevard College motto “Learn in order to serve”, the Center for Multicultural and Service Initiatives (CMSI) is a student-focused office that provides resources and educational opportunities for the campus community. CMSI provides students with volunteer opportunities based on academic and personal interests as well as providing the town of Brevard and surrounding community with passionate and energetic volunteers that will make a difference. Alternative Fall and Spring Break trips, MLK Celebration activities, service to the local domestic violence shelter, preparing meals for the homeless, even working in a community garden are all part of the CMSI outreach program. Service related to federal, state, local and institutional programs is also coordinated through the CMSI. Federal Work Study students are able to work off campus at an approved local non-profit. NC-ACTS!, an AmeriCorps program, rewards students who have served 300 hours in their local community with a $1,100 Education Award. Our EMERGE program fosters positive relationships between current top BC students and incoming new students in order to support academic success and personal growth during the first year of college.

Wellness Center The Stamey Wellness Center offers a warm reception area where students are welcomed and assisted in connecting with professional services and personal help as quickly as possible. Counseling Services provides resources to support and enhance the success of students in the academic and social environment of the college as well as in the personal and developmental aspects of their lives. Medical Services are available to assist students who are sick and to teach preventive measures to stay healthy in order to best achieve academic success. Our Religious Life program is inspired by the ministry of the United Methodist Church and welcomes a diversity of religious preferences among the student body who seek to learn in an atmosphere of nurturing one’s spiritual path.

Other unique BC Experiential Programs Institute for Women in Leadership IWIL is a residential learning community that fosters confident, inquisitive young women with a passion for local service. Through mentoring and experiential leadership programs, IWIL women develop into Brevard College leaders ready to also serve their communities upon graduation. Study Abroad Students can pursue a minor in Spanish while experiencing immersion in the culture as well as the language during a semester in Costa Rica. Students interested in studying in Europe will find opportunities in London each year. Working together with BC faculty and staff in our Academic Enrichment Center, students have many additional options for study abroad through our membership in the Appalachian College Association. Additionally, recent trips to Egypt and Iceland are examples of experiences abroad for credit between semesters. Voice of the Rivers Voice of the Rivers (VOR) is one of the hallmarks of Brevard College. VOR consists of a select number of BC students and faculty who engage in a three week expedition focused on the interdisciplinary study of a river. Students from any major on campus traverse a river from its source to its end researching its ecosystem, developing peer and faculty bonds, presenting information to communities along the way, and earning academic credit.

Dr. Drew Van Horn, BC President

Dr. Drew Van Horn assumed the presidency of Brevard College on September 30, 2002. He is the third president of Brevard College since it became a four-year institution.

Under President Van Horn’s leadership, the institution continues to challenge students to integrate knowledge and practical experience so that they can become competent, confident and responsible citizens, serving their local and global communities.

To that end, Brevard College offers varied programs and opportunities to its students that form the foundation for pursuing further formal study, meaningful vocations and life-long personal and professional development.

Since taking the helm, President Van Horn has led collaborative efforts to enhance Brevard College’s commitment to engage and educate its students in the theoretical and applied liberal arts.

In 2004, President Van Horn led one of the most ambitious capital campaigns in Brevard College’s history. By the conclusion of the campaign in May 2006, the College exceeded its $14 million target by more than $5 million. Funds raised from the campaign were used to provide significant student scholarships; increase the College’s endowment; enhance student enrollment and retention efforts; and renovate many of the College’s facilities, including residence halls and classrooms. During his tenure, Brevard College has also added new academic programs, including psychology, criminal justice and teacher education licensure. The College also moved from the NAIA to NCAA Division II and added football, cycling and cheerleading as varsity sports.

Most recently, President Van Horn initiated a five-year strategic plan for the College that encourages meaningful service; promotes student engagement; models environmental stewardship; strengthens financial resources; expands employee support; and enhances campus infrastructure. Campus-wide efforts on those six commitments are ongoing.
