Associate AD/Head Coach: Juan Mascaro (Central Florida, 1994)

5

2010 BC Men’s Soccer Coaching Staff Head Coach Juan Mascaro is beginning his fourth year at the helm of the Brevard College men’s soccer program, as the Tornados into their second year as full NCAA Division II and South Atlantic Conference members.

Mascaro was selected to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Advisory Committee in 2010-2011 and will help with the gathering and sharing of results for teams within their conference or geographical area, the ranking of the top teams in the region, the provision of input in the selection of officials for the championship, the provision of input in the selection of sites for championship competition and the service as a sounding board for the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Committee.

In 2008, Mascaro led the men’s soccer team to a 5-14-1 record in their inaugural season as members of NCAA Division II and the SAC. The Tornados recorded their first SAC win over Lincoln Memorial, 2-1, on Oct. 24. The highlight of the season came on Oct. 15 when they took Division I Winthrop into double overtime, before falling 2-1.

During his time at Brevard, Mascaro has guided the men’s soccer team to a 9-28-2 record, playing a full SAC slate, which includes four NCAA Division II National Tournament participants and the NCAA DII National Championship runner-up.

Mascaro comes to Brevard from Campbell University where he spent two seasons as the Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach. During his first season at Campbell, he helped the Fighting Camels to advance into the 2005 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. From this outstanding performance the Camels ended their season with a 6-3-1 league record and 8-9-2 overall. While at Campbell his duties included training the goalkeepers, recruiting coordinator and monitoring the academic progress of the student athletes.

6

Prior to Campbell, he was the Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach for the University of Central Florida for five seasons. During his tenure, the Golden Knights were ranked as high as number-13 nationally and won the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. During his last three seasons with the Golden Knights the team finished with a 35-20-1 overall record. His main areas of responsibilities for the Knights included training the goalkeepers, recruiting coordinator assisting the head coach in all areas of team training.

A native of El Salvador, Mascaro earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration in 1994 and his Master of Arts in Applied Economics in 1999 from the University of Central Florida. He currently holds his NSCAA National Coaching Diploma earned in 1994 and Advanced National Diploma in 1995.

2010 BC Men’s Soccer Season Preview Coming off a rebuilding season, the Tornados appear optimistic this upcoming season as Coach Juan Mascaro’s men’s soccer team has new transfers and newcomers joining the 2010 squad as Brevard enters its third full season in the NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference. With a roster spanning six countries and multiple states, Coach Mascaro will be looking to seniors Henri Erti, Niclas Stolt, Miro Mustonen and Renato Barbosa to mentor the squad featuring 17 underclassmen and expects the seniors to provide stability and leadership from the top in one of the premier conferences in the NCAA.

Forwards Returning up front for the Tornados at the forward position are Erti and sophomore Alec Darcey. Erti recorded 11 shots last season and was one of three Tornados to play in every single contest last season, while Darcey recorded an assist last season among his six starts and 18 games on the pitch. Junior transfer Jaime Villacis and freshmen Sean Allison and Andrew Gallowitch are also expected to battle for playing time up front and each are capable goal scorers to help raise the offensive output from last season.

Midfielders Stolt and Barbosa returns to guide a veteran-laden midfield for Brevard, and Stolt is the team’s leading shot taker returning from last season with 12 shots last season with five on goal. Barbosa is the returning leading goal scorer for the Tornados from last year, finding the net twice as a sophomore, with goals against Erskine and SAC Opponent Lenoir-Rhyne. Juniors Anthony Cardenas, Tim Blevins and Dimitrius McCloghry also return, as well as sophomores Paul Bergvin and Ian Baker to challenge for playing time and will help mentor the freshmen class of Jacob Parker, Jami Uuttu, Patrick Urmson, Adam Martin and Nino Jessup.

Defenders Mustonen dots the Tornados men’s soccer record books and played in 17 games last season as a defender for the Tornados. He returns with junior Scott Schuurman as a member of one of the strongest groups on the squad for the season. Also returning is sophomores Landon Reid and Ryan Guill. Guill scored a goal for Brevard last season against North Greenville and is capable of providing an offensive threat from the backline for the Tornados.

Goalkeepers Returning in between the pipes is last season’s starter Jack Shaw and junior Thomas Kombol. Shaw finished fourth in the South Atlantic Conference last season in saves with 81 last season and recorded the lone victory for Brevard. Kombol saw action in three games as well last season, providing depth for the Tornados keeper position. Newcomers Ryan Bailey and Pauli Jussila will also compete for time in the goal for Coach Mascaro this upcoming season. The Tornados open the 2010 season with a pair of exhibitions against Montreat at home on Aug. 19 and on the road at Milligan on Aug. 23, before opening the regular season on the road in Due West, S.C. on Sept. 2 against Erskine College at 7 p.m.

The South Atlantic Conference The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker.

South Atlantic Conference

The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions.

In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999).

2009 Tornados season in Review With 12 new players on roster and a pair of Division I opponents on the schedule, Men’s Soccer Coach Juan Mascaro knew it was going to be a season of rebuilding and growth for the Tornados as he looked to replace last season’s squad who won five games, including an overtime win over perennial South Atlantic Conference power Lincoln Memorial. Brevard finished the season with a 1-18 record in 2009, and went 0-8 in South Atlantic Conference play, but the Tornados played hard throughout the season, never giving up and pulled off the lone win on the pitch on the BC Soccer Field.

Chris Landvik-Larsen looks ahead to find the open man

The Tornados opened the 2009 season on the road on August 27th, falling on the road in Central, S.C. to Southern Wesleyan, before returning home on August 30th for their first home game of the season. Led by goals by senior midfielder Ian Townson and freshman forward Chris Landvik-Larsen, Brevard went up 2-1 against the Pfeiffer Falcons, but the visitors were able to come back and win the game in overtime, 3-2. The Tornados next game was in Asheville, N.C. against NCAA Division I Big South opponent UNC Asheville. Brevard put up a fight, recording five shots in the game with two by senior forward Craig Galloway going on target, but the Tornados were unable to overcome the Bulldogs.

Jack Shaw blasts the ball out of the box to start the Tornados offense

After returning home and falling to Coker on September 6th, the Tornados hosted the Erskine College Flying Fleet on the BC Soccer Field. Sophomore midfielder Renato Barbosa put a shot in the net within the first 10 minutes of the contest to give the Tornados the early lead. Erskine placed in a goal 10 minutes before the half to knot the game up at 1, but Galloway responded with a goal of his own just before the half to net the Tornados a 2-1 advantage. Freshman goalkeeper Jack Shaw stopped four shots in the second half and Landvik-Larsen added an insurance goal as the Tornados 27

2009 Tornados season in Review

snapped their four-game losing streak with their first win, 3-1.

Brevard dropped their next match against NCAA Division I Big South opponent Winthrop before opening conference play with a match on September 19th against CarsonNewman.

The Tornados fought throughout conference play as Barbosa and Galloway each scored goals in SAC competition on the season, but Brevard was unable to top any other opponents the rest of the season in ending with a 14-game losing streak.

Niclas Stolt skies over the Carson-Newman defender for the ball

During the season, the Tornados were ranked among the SAC leaders in saves per game, averaging 4.42 per contest, while finishing ninth in goals, assists and shutouts. Team leaders throughout the season included Landvik-Larsen and Galloway as the duo placed in three goals apiece during the season, leading five players who found the net for Brevard. Townson added a pair of goals on penalty kicks to join the duo in multiple goals on the season. Landvik-Larsen, Barbosa and Nathan deCock had assists in the season to help the Tornados offensive effort. Defensively, Shaw led the way in the goal, recording 79 saves on the season, while playing 17 games. Shaw was also the keeper in the Tornados lone win on the season as well. Thomas Kombol played in three games as well between the pipes for Coach Mascaro. Brevard loses four seniors from this season’s squad, but with the experience gained by the team’s 15 underclassmen, Brevard will be looking to build on the foundation set this season as they continue their goal of competing in the South Atlantic Conference. 28

Over the next eight years, Brevard athletic teams earned 10 conference titles and made 9 national tournament appearances. A new era of Brevard College athletics began in 2006 as the Tornados initiated the transition process from the NAIA to NCAA Division II while also adding football, cycling and cheerleading as varsity sports. Brevard College was officially granted active NCAA Division II and South Atlantic Conference membership status on September 1, 2008. In just two years of eligibility, every single BC Athletic team has either recorded a South Atlantic Conference win or made it to the postseason South Atlantic Conference tournament. The men’s basketball team won Brevard’s first South Atlantic Conference Championship and the Cycling team was named the 2009 Fall Mountain Bike National Champions. Brevard has also seen multiple athletes and coaches receive both All- Conference and All-Region recognition as the Tornados look to establish a pattern of success both in the NCAA and the South Atlantic Conference.

Dr. Drew Van Horn, President

Dr. Drew Van Horn assumed the presidency of Brevard College on September 30, 2002.He is the third president of Brevard College since it became a four-year institution.

Under President Van Horn’s leadership, the institution continues to challenge students to integrate knowledge and practical experience so that they can become competent, confident and responsible citizens, serving their local and global communities.

To that end, Brevard College offers varied programs and opportunities to its students that form the foundation for pursuing further formal study, meaningful vocations and life-long personal and professional development.

Since taking the helm, President Van Horn has led collaborative efforts to enhance Brevard College’s commitment to engage and educate its students in the theoretical and applied liberal arts.

In 2004, President Van Horn led one of the most ambitious capital campaigns in Brevard College’s history. By the conclusion of the campaign in May 2006, the College exceeded its $14 million target by more than $5 million. Funds raised from the campaign were used to provide significant student scholarships; increase the College’s endowment; enhance student enrollment and retention efforts; and renovate many of the College’s facilities, including residence halls and classrooms. During his tenure, Brevard College has also added new academic programs, including psychology, criminal justice and teacher education licensure. The College also moved from the NAIA to NCAA Division II and added football, cycling and cheerleading as varsity sports.

40

Most recently, President Van Horn initiated a five-year strategic plan for the College that encourages meaningful service; promotes student engagement; models environmental stewardship; strengthens financial resources; expands employee support; and enhances campus infrastructure. Campus-wide efforts on those six commitments are ongoing.

Pate began her tenure as an Associate Director of Business working in the business office under the Vice President for Business & Finance, and made the transition to Athletics in 2006. Pate has been instrumental in developing a Model NCAA Division II compliance program during the transitional process from NAIA to NCAA Division II. She orchestrated the completion of the NCAA Division II provisional membership process under the leadership of President Van Horn in August of 2008 as the Tornados made the transition from provisional members to full NCAA Division II members competing in the South Atlantic Conference.

Pate, a 2003 graduate of Brevard College, was a two time NAIA Academic All-American athlete and a four year starter for the BC softball team. She ended her playing career with a .377 batting average and holds the BC softball record for most hits.
