Head Coach Shigeyoshi Shinohara Coach Shinohara is entering his second year at Brevard after leading the Tornados to their first South Atlantic Conference Tournament bid in his first year, with a 6-12-1 overall record. Shinohara came to Brevard from the University of Montevallo where he served as the assistant women’s soccer coach since August of 2005. During his time at Montevallo, Shinohara was heavily involved in recruiting for head coach Patricia Hughes, and was also very involved in all facets of the operation of the women’s soccer program. Shinohara takes over a team that finished 6-12-1, 0-8 in the South Atlantic Conference in their inaugural year as full members of both the SAC and NCAA Division II. Shinohara started his coaching career in Yamaguchi, Japan where he was the assistant for the Seiki Football Club of a group aged 10-16 from 1994-2001. From there he moved to the United Soccer Academy where he was responsible for the day-to-day administrative operations as well as being a full-time coach where he coached one-on-one sessions with youth players whose ages ranged from 3-18. Shinohara began his collegiate coaching career in August of 2005 when he became the assistant women’s coach at the University of Montevallo. During his time at Montevallo, the Falcons were the Gulf South Conference Champions in 2007, making it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Tampa in the South Region Championship match. Montevallo also was a Gulf South Tournament finalist in 2008. In addition to his collegiate work, Shinohara has been a member of the Alabama Olympic Developmental Program staff from August 2005-present, evaluating and training players as well as coaching in spring and summer camps in the district and state. He also coached the 2005 Alabama State Cup Division II Champion South Shelby Futball Club Strikers 93 and assisted with the Birmingham United Soccer Association Alabama State League U15 Division I Champions Lady Jets 92 Blue team in 2006.

2010 Season Preview One year after making the postseason for the first time by qualifying for the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament, Coach Shigeyoshi Shinohara’s team returns stronger than ever, thanks to a veteranlead squad featuring 12 upperclassmen guided by senior captain Nikki Peacock and senior Katie Donohue. Coach Shinohara and Assistant Coach Caity Brown guided the Tornados to a 6-12-1 record last season, winning their first four regular season contests on their way to the quarterfinals of the South Atlantic Conference tournament and look to repeat their winning ways on their way to another postseason berth.
Forwards Junior captain Bailey Varley and sophomore Allie Hovis return up front for the Tornados as the duo combined for two-thirds of the Brevard College goals scored last season, finding the net 14 times, while dishing out six assists. Junior Latoshia Hopewell also returns for Brevard after receiving limited action last season, but was able to chip in a goal in six games’ worth of action and is one of the faster players on the team, able to chase down the ball in open space to create instant offense. Also challenging for playing time up front includes junior Chelsea Watson and freshman Elena Crowe who comes to the team having scored over 20 goals in high school play.
Midfielders Peacock and junior captain Chelsea Freeman return to lead the midfield for Coach Shinohara, heading up a deep group of athletes. Peacock added an assist to the offensive effort, while Freeman is one of the better passers on the squad, with the ability to place the ball anywhere on the field. Also returning at the midfield includes juniors Alyssa Caracena and Danielle Burch and sophomore Chantel Azevedo. Caracena finished the season with a pair of goals, including the game-winner against Converse, while Azevedo had a goal and was tied for the team lead with three assists and Burch added an assist. Newcomers expected to challenge for playing time this upcoming season includes sophomore Carolyn Anderson, as well as freshmen Jamie Bundy, Francie Blair and Laura Smith.
Defenders Donohue provides senior leadership on the backline, heading up a group that is among the most battletested for Coach Shinohara. Donohue scored the game-winning goal against Young Harris and has the ability to provide both offensive and defensive prowess from the backline. Juniors Caitlin Hubbard, Rachael Laughlin and Janet Basinger also return, providing great depth and experience heading into their third season in the program and much will be expected from this talented trio, while sophomores Hannah Graham and Teresa Musick will provide energy for the Tornados on the pitch. Incoming freshmen Abigail Rusch and Lindsay Pritchard will also challenge for playing time this season.
Goalkeepers The Tornados will have a new face in goal this season as last season’s starter Sydney Douglas graduated this past May. Battling for playing time at keeper this year will be returning junior Jordan Box and incoming freshmen Brittany Webster and Crissy Moran. Box went a perfect 3-0-0 in the goal last season with one shutout recorded against Warren Wilson, while Webster and Moran were both highly decorated keepers in high school and are expected to challenge for playing time right away. Coach Shinohara’s team opens up play with a scrimmage on Aug. 19 at home against Montreat, before opening up the regular season on Sept. 2 on the road against Erskine College.

2009 BC Women’s Soccer season in review The Tornados capped a promising second season as full members of NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference by earning a berth into the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament in Jefferson City, Tenn. and recorded a winning home record for the second season in a row. Brevard finished up the season with a 6-12-1 record, going 0-7-1 in South Atlantic Conference play, but the Tornados finished with a 5-3-1 home record in the regular season, topping last season’s 5-4-1 mark on the Brevard College soccer field. Welcoming a new coach in Shigeyoshi Shinohara, who took over the program in the spring of 2009, the Tornados opened up the 2009 regular season with an exhibition and a trio of scrimmages from August 13th-21st.

The practice paid off as the Tornados opened the season with a win on the Brevard pitch, topping Montreat 1-0 to start the season on August 27th on freshman Allie Hovis’ first goal of her collegiate career. The Tornados continued their winning ways on August 29th, defeating Anderson University in overtime on another goal by Hovis. Brevard found another hero in its third game of the season as Bailey Varley found the net three times, with the final goal hitting the net in double overtime as the Tornados topped Lees-McRae on September 1st, 4-3. Hovis and Katherine Donohue both scored in Brevard’s fourth game of the season to run the winning streak to four in a row, the Tornados longest streak since the 2004 season, as Brevard topped Young Harris, 2-1. The Tornados winning streak was snapped in the final game of their five-game home stand to open up the 2009 season, taking Montevallo to the wire behind a 17 save performance by senior goalkeeper Sydney Douglas, before falling in double overtime, 1-0.
The loss opened up a six game losing streak as the Tornados also dropped matches to North Greenville, Lenoir-Rhyne, Lincoln Memorial, Newberry and Tusculum, before rallying to overcome an own goal against Converse as senior midfielder Chelsea Shew found the back of the net and sophomore forward Alyssa Caracena put in the game winner less than a minute into overtime to snap the skid as Brevard left Spartanburg, S.C. with the 2-1 victory.

Chantel Azevedo assisted on a pair of Varley goals and found the back of the net herself and sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Box turned back both Owls’ shot attempts in recording the 3-0 win to break the losing streak.
After falling to Southern Wesleyan in their next game, the Tornados came into their South Atlantic Conference match against Mars Hill needing at least a tie to earn a chance to qualify for the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament. Hovis put the Tornados ahead early, but the Tornados were unable to retain the advantage in setting for the 1-1 tie against the Lions on October 16th.

The Tornados finished the regular season by falling to Carson-Newman and Catawba, leaving their fate to qualify for the tournament up to a coin flip to see if they would qualify for the tournament. Brevard won the flip, locking up the eighth-seed and headed to their first postseason play. Douglas made 12 saves in the game as Brevard faced off with tournament host and top-seed Carson-Newman on November 4th, and Hovis placed two shots on goal, but the Tornados were unable to overcome the Eagles in falling in the quarterfinals. During the season, the Tornados were ranked among the leaders in the South Atlantic Conference in several categories. Brevard finished second in the conference in total saves with 134 on the season, averaging 7.05 per game, while finishing eighth in the SAC in shutouts with two on the season. Offensively, the Tornados finished eighth in the conference in goals scored and assists on the season. Varley and Hovis led the Tornados with seven goals apiece as eight Brevard players recorded goals in the 2009 season. Varley and Hovis also led the team as each player scored a pair of game-winning goals on the season. Varley, Hovis and Azevedo led the team with three assists apiece, while Caracena also finished among the leaders on the season with a pair of goals. In-between the pipes, Douglas received the majority of the minutes and recorded three of Brevard’s wins on the season, while Jordan Box recorded three wins in the four games she saw action in the net. The Tornados lose five seniors from the squad in Kayla Yingst, Chelsea Shew, Jessica Guadagno, Kelly Harris and Sydney Douglas, but retain the majority of their starting lineup with 14 underclassmen returning next season. Brevard will look to build on their success as they look to take the next step in the SAC.

Over the next eight years, Brevard athletic teams earned 10 conference titles and made 9 national tournament appearances. A new era of Brevard College athletics began in 2006 as the Tornados initiated the transition process from the NAIA to NCAA Division II while also adding football, cycling and cheerleading as varsity sports. Brevard College was officially granted active NCAA Division II and South Atlantic Conference membership status on September 1, 2008. In just two years of eligibility, every single BC Athletic team has either recorded a South Atlantic Conference win or made it to the postseason South Atlantic Conference tournament. The men’s basketball team won Brevard’s first South Atlantic Conference Championship and the Cycling team was named the 2009 Fall Mountain Bike National Champions. Brevard has also seen multiple athletes and coaches receive both All- Conference and All-Region recognition as the Tornados look to establish a pattern of success both in the NCAA and the South Atlantic Conference. Dr. Drew Van Horn, President
Dr. Drew Van Horn assumed the presidency of Brevard College on September 30, 2002.He is the third president of Brevard College since it became a four-year institution.
Under President Van Horn’s leadership, the institution continues to challenge students to integrate knowledge and practical experience so that they can become competent, confident and responsible citizens, serving their local and global communities.
To that end, Brevard College offers varied programs and opportunities to its students that form the foundation for pursuing further formal study, meaningful vocations and life-long personal and professional development.
Since taking the helm, President Van Horn has led collaborative efforts to enhance Brevard College’s commitment to engage and educate its students in the theoretical and applied liberal arts.
In 2004, President Van Horn led one of the most ambitious capital campaigns in Brevard College’s history. By the conclusion of the campaign in May 2006, the College exceeded its $14 million target by more than $5 million. Funds raised from the campaign were used to provide significant student scholarships; increase the College’s endowment; enhance student enrollment and retention efforts; and renovate many of the College’s facilities, including residence halls and classrooms. During his tenure, Brevard College has also added new academic programs, including psychology, criminal justice and teacher education licensure. The College also moved from the NAIA to NCAA Division II and added football, cycling and cheerleading as varsity sports.
40
Most recently, President Van Horn initiated a five-year strategic plan for the College that encourages meaningful service; promotes student engagement; models environmental stewardship; strengthens financial resources; expands employee support; and enhances campus infrastructure. Campus-wide efforts on those six commitments are ongoing.
Kim Pate, Director of Athletics
Kim Pate is the Director of Athletics at Brevard College. Pate currently oversees the entire 18 varsity sport athletic program at Brevard.
She is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) and is on the NCAA Division II Membership Committee. In 2010, Pate was elected vice chair of the Membership Committee and will represent the committee on the Membership Fund Selection Committee.
Prior to becoming Athletic Director, she served in the capacity of Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Business and Senior Woman Administrator. Pate began her tenure as an Associate Director of Business working in the business office under the Vice President for Business & Finance, and made the transition to Athletics in 2006. Pate has been instrumental in developing a Model NCAA Division II compliance program during the transitional process from NAIA to NCAA Division II. She orchestrated the completion of the NCAA Division II provisional membership process under the leadership of President Van Horn in August of 2008 as the Tornados made the transition from provisional members to full NCAA Division II members competing in the South Atlantic Conference.
Pate, a 2003 graduate of Brevard College, was a two time NAIA Academic All-American athlete and a four year starter for the BC softball team. She ended her playing career with a .377 batting average and holds the BC softball record for most hits.
