ARC 107 PROJECTS
EXERCISE 1: FORM AND MAKING
EXERCISE 2: ELEMENTS AND OPERATIONS OF FORM
2
EXERCISE 3: SCALE, MOVEMENT, AND CONTEXT
EXERCISE 4: CASE STUDY ANALYSIS
EXERCISE 5: A PUBLIC-PRIVATE STUDIO
3
The exercise asked to procude an abstract 6" cube out of only one of the three formal elemnts. Students were asked to produce preliminary 3" cubes out of linear elements (basswood strips), planar elements (museum board, foamcore board), and volumetric elements (blue foam). The object must touch all eight corners, but not necessarily need to fully complete the six surfaces of the cube.

EXERCISE 2.1: LINEAR ELEMENTS 5
EXERCISE 2.2: PLANAR ELEMENTS

EXERCISE 2.3: VOLUMETRIC ELEMENTS
7
In the final invesitgation, students needed to produce an object bounded by a 9" cube. This time utilizing any two types of formal elements and up to any two formal operations from the Operative Design book. The object produced in this exercise must contain five interior spaces, one of which must possess clear hierarchichal dominance.
EXERCISE 2.4: ELEMENTS AND OPERATIONS OF FORM 8
9
The fundamental goal was to be introduced to the three characteristics of architecture: scale, movement and context. Students were asked to observe, experience and graphycally represent buildings on the Syracuse Campus. This set of images explores the sequencial experience of Crouse Collage.
EXERCISE 3.1: OBSERVING AND RECORDING 10
The five spaces established in the previous exercises in the original objects, as well as the specific selection of formal operations, formal elements and materials, may be refined or reconsidered. Students need to produce a sequence of architectural space that would be experienced by moving occupants.
EXERCISE 3.2: FROM ABSTRACT FORM TO ARCHITECTURAL FORM 11
All members of each team transform their individual full-sized, unscaled artifacts into a scaled, representational architectural model. Each student refined their projects, this time in response to the more expanded contextual conditions.
EXERCISE 3.3: REACTING TO AND ACTING ON CONTEXT 12
13
EXERCISE 4: CASE STUDY ANALYSIS
Students are asked to apply what they have developed in the previous three design exercises to the graphical analysis of an architectural precedent. By eocoming thoroughly familiar with the assigned case-study, in this case the Double House by MVRDV, students needed to create five original drawings to analyze the assigened precedent projects.

EXERCISE 5: A PUBLIC-PRIVATE STUDIO In the final exercise students were asked to design a new dwelling and studio for an artsit. This live/work studio was required to have three types of spaces: work space, living space, and exhibition space. It was important to consider the conditions of publicness and privacy.
