Licensing

Welcome to the Summer/Fall edition of Total Art Licensing. May is, without a doubt, a hugely busy month. As the magazine is going to press, many of our readers will be preparing for one or more of the art licensing trade shows that take place during May - Surtex and the two Blueprint Shows in New York and Licensing Expo in Las Vegas. Surtex, of course, sits alongside the National Stationery Show. The two three-day Blueprint Shows, on the other hand have grown significantly since the first one only three years ago when twelve studios got together. This year there will be nearly 120 different studios and artists at one or both of the events. Total Art Licensing will be at Surtex, Blueprint Shows and at Licensing Expo and we very much hope to see many of our advertisers and readers at one or other show. We hope you enjoy this issue and look forward to regularly receiving your art licensing news and views. Francesca Ash, Co-Publisher

Bentley Licensing Group will be debuting new image collections from their top licensed Artists at this years Surtex Show. Bentley is dedicated to connecting Artist’s images with worldwide manufacturers to create top selling products. Following are just a few of the new image collections being offered by Bentley’s Artists at this year’s show. Janet Kruskamp has spent the past year creating images of current trending designs. She completed three more vintage trailer images to accompany her very successful “Honey for Sale” vintage trailer image from last year. These three new images continue the vintage traveling trailer theme with a variety of shops selling coffee and sweet treats, a beauty parlor and a Christmas Tree Lot. She also completed her first Halloween collection for this Surtex Show. Sung Kim has added to his popular image portfolio with more trains, winter and summer watermills, a log cabin on a lake, a summer beach day and a brown bear hunting for fish in a river bed. His images pull you into the scene and make you wish you were there. Just recently Kim’s images were licensed to a company in Israel for notebooks, book covers, dairies and pencil wallet school products. Bentley also licensed Kim’s images to a new puzzle Licensee in Brazil this past year. Ronald West continues to entertain us with his “Twist on Whimsical” imagery. New images this year include European bicycle racers, a couple caught in the rain with a broken-down automobile, dancers at the beach, a runaway bride, women bathing with wine and cakes and my favorite, a clown and entertainers announcing that “The Circus is Coming to Town”. Joe Sambataro created four incredible watermill images depicting the four seasons. Joe’s paintings are collected all over the world and Bentley feels quite fortunate that he took time out from his busy schedule to paint these four images for the show. He also has a new Victorian home image that will be featured at the show as well. Bentley will also be showing new images from their ever-popular Artists: Guido Borelli, Irene Suchocki, Shari Warren, Fran Di Giacomo, Robert Dawson and others. THE ART OF JANE SHASKY

From the lush Kitsap Peninsula in Washington State, artist Jane Shasky paints beautifully detailed watercolors celebrating the flowers, plant and bird-life surrounding her Pacific Northwest home. Her paintings are remarkable for their detail and warm love of life. To see Jane’s work is to experience the timeless cycle of seasons; from the bounty of summer flowers and freshpicked herbs to the delightful visitations of native birds perched on winter branches. In every scene she captures, Jane pays meticulous, almost photographic attention to color and detail, yet somehow still conveys the magic and sense of wonder at the nature all around her. With every stroke of her brush, she creates a feeling of serenity that brings the joy, grace and peace of the garden indoors. When you view her work, you are seeing what Jane has observed with her own eyes and felt

A BRIGHT FUTURE

with her own emotions. She is a gifted photographer as well as painter, and the two talents merge in her work. When asked about her influences and inspirations, Jane recounts, “My most cherished early memories are of time spent with my grandmothers, surrounded by lilacs and peonies in their country gardens. They planted their love of nature in me like seeds, so much of my inspiration has sprouted from that deep connection they showed me. Being an artist isn’t what I do as much as it is how I experience life and relate to the natural world. To me, the magic is in both the act of seeing, noting the color and light, the shadows and the tiniest of details, and in finding a way to instill it with the joy I feel in being a part of it all.” Jane continues to be a featured artist with the Lang Companies with a variety of calendar titles, including Birds in the Garden, Herb Garden, Butterflies and Botanical Inspiration, as well as many other product categories. Henry Glass & Co. has just released the stunning new fabric group, Poppy Perfection, and My Sunflower Garden will be available soon. Her Flowering Herb Jars design appears with several companies, including a collection of outdoor décor with Studio-M. Jane’s intricate botanical designs are also featured in a beautiful new collection of bath products from Creative Bath titled Perennials. Jane will be attending Quilt Market Portland in May and AmericasMart, Atlanta in July. To license Jane’s work, contact her at jane@janeshasky. com.

Telling the Story… Anyone that has been in the licensing or product development industry for any period of time has heard the adage “make sure you are telling a story.” The reactions to this phrase can range from “Wow, what fun” to “how in the world do I do that without words?”. So, who is telling this all-important story? Who is the audience? What are the elements – is it a happy story, inspirational, sympathetic? Are we trying to tell our story or tell our customer’s story? Maybe, the story reflects on memories of a great vacation, a special event, a place we love, or a message of common interests to a person we are missing? A manufacturer or retailer uses artwork to sell more products, and the artist / designer want to provide just the right artwork to create those sales, right? So how does this happen? Let’s say, Claire Customer is in a store looking for items for her kitchen. Does a story really matter on cookie jars, towels, or placemats? Maybe she wants her home to display something special to her, or to the person she is giving this gift to. Birds (beautiful or just plain cute), Travel (Paris, doesn’t that say it all), Gourmet Taste or a Down Home Palate? Does she want to project a feeling? Is it peaceful, warm and cozy, playful, or classy? All of this goes into the story the product’s artwork should be reflecting. It’s more than just a theme. Check out the pictures in this article, they are all reflecting a story – however, they are side by side with another picture that is reflecting another story of the same theme. Come by booth #2533 and check out some of the stories being told by the artists at Artistic Designs Group, they just may be the story that your customers are wanting to hear.

Total Art Licensing talked to Randi Mohr, VP of Emerald Expositions and Surtex Show Director to find out more about the show and what’s happening this year. Surtex is now in its 32nd year, having launched back in 1986. How much has the show evolved since its beginnings into the much-anticipated annual global art and design event it now is? Along with the industry itself, Surtex continues to change as art and design styles evolve and is a destination for both established and emerging artists and designers. All of these factors add up to an expanded breadth of design styles on display. For example, we see watercolor continuing to be popular but anticipate seeing more contemporary designs, bolder prints and patterns, colors, geometrics and very dark and edgy designs featuring fire. This year in particular we welcome participation of artists and designers from all over the United States as well as around the world – approximately 25% of our exhibitors are from outside of the country. How long have you personally been involved with the show? I’ve been working in the trade show industry for 15 years and have had the pleasure of working on Surtex beginning in June 2017. What makes Surtex stand out from the crowd as the event that artists, designers, agents, manufacturers and retailers simply don’t miss? Surtex continues to be the largest licensing forum in New York City, offering those seeking the latest prints, patterns and design services for their product development needs and also art and designs available for purchase from artists/designers in our Atelier section. The Design district features first-time participating artists breaking into the art/design space. How many exhibitors are you expecting this year? How many of these will be firsttime exhibitors and what percentage come from outside the US? How many visitors are expected to attend? We expect nearly 200 exhibiting artists/designers, with about 40% of those exhibiting at Surtex for the first time. As noted above,

how millennials are spurring the home textile companies to transform and attract their business; and the session by Steve Greenberg and Chris Moore discussing digital technology in design – for instance how 3D printing can bring your design concept to reality – and the newest processes technology offers. For a full schedule visit https://www.Surtex.com/show/ trend-theatre/

more than 25% of the artists and designers are from other countries outside the U.S. How has Surtex’s reputation grown in recent years in terms of becoming an increasingly global event, and how far do some exhibitors travel to be there? Exhibiting artists and designers hail from 13 countries (outside of the U.S): Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Columbia, France, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Poland, Spain, and the UK. Trend Theatre is one of the show’s special features - what speakers should attendees be looking out for this year? The Boulevard is an exciting destination for all Surtex participants this year. This is the area connecting Surtex with the National Stationery Show, highlighting the similarities and synergies of the two events. It will be the new “home” for the shared Theatre, featuring Surtex trend focused programming, the social media lounge and demonstrations. The Theatre schedule includes industry experts, thought leaders and trend spotters. Topics include the use of vintage and antique textiles for inspiration, products with personality, the impact millennials are having on products designs and brands. I’m especially looking forward to “It’s Now a Millennial World” and

Why would you say is Surtex particularly good for business networking? Have you any anecdotes of any particularly spectacular or big-name art licensing deals that took place there? Surtex is the only forum that brings all facets of the industry together in one place. This applies to those established in the industry as well as those new to it. Please note both the timeframe and participant privacy preclude us from providing specifics on companies and deals for publication. Finally, what other special features can you tell us about taking place at Surtex 2018? What must-see ‘flash talks’ are you personally looking forward to attending? Two other exciting happenings will take place on the Boulevard. Trend speakers Bridgette Morphew and Jason Lyon of Morphew and Paradox are hosting a pop-up show and will have a selection of antique and vintage apparel for sale. The items will coincide with their trend session on Sunday about the use of vintage and antique textiles for design inspiration and the intersection of the home and fashion markets –a variety of pieces from around the world from Japanese Kimonos to West African Indigos. Highlighting the relationship between the surface design and stationery industries is Rongrong and Graphique de France sketching on the Boulevard. Rongrong DeVoe is a designer under Surtex exhibitor Jewel Brand and Art Licensing and Graphique de France is an NSS exhibitor. (See our website for complete descriptions and times). Rongrong will be sketching on Graphique De France stationery.

Late one night (after a particularly difficult day), Joey began doodling as a way to escape reality, and wound up staring a penguin barfing up an armless skeleton. Joey thought it would be funny to post it on Craigslist, expecting maybe one person would reply (if only to suggest counseling). To her surprise, a slew of emails awaited me when she woke up. Inspired, she kept bringing weird ideas to life and mailing them off to strangers. She loved making them, people loved receiving them, and it was just an awesome thing. Then one day she bumped into a street artist who asked her if she made art, and after reluctantly showing her work, she suggested bringing it to Union Square. It took more than a month before she showed up, petrified. Her setup was scarce- a little table, a few prints, and a portfo-

Licensing for this year’s event which you can see here featured in the magazine. Jennifer Orkin Lewis created the fantastic New York scene for the first show and Harriet Mellor’s cityscape for the second show is equally exciting and inspiring. The colours are great and they sit really well together even though they are very different styles. Emma Shonenberg kindly designed the beautiful poster for our new event, a Blue Print on the West Coast. It will be in San Francisco from the 2nd – 4th of October. The venue for this show is in the Fort Mason complex very close to Fisherman’s Wharf, which also houses the Museum of Modern Art. Gallery 308 has enough space for 25 exhibitors and literally looks out over the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. Emma’s poster clearly captures the mood of Blue Print and San Francisco perfectly !

Here we are in 2018, and it’s the third year of Blue Print ! It’s amazing how quickly another year has gone by. The show has come a long way since the first one in 2015 when we were just 12 studios. This year we will have 112 studios and artists at the Hudson Mercantile at 500 West 36th Street, New York, which is between 10th and 11th Avenues. By keeping the price reasonable, the show has become a reality for a lot of artists that wanted to show in New York in May, but always found the prices way too high to exhibit! Blue Print has become a community where exhibitors can talk to each other, ask questions, and generally help each other out. The important thing is that the show is attracting buyers from all product categories. These include companies from Home, Textiles and Fabrics, Publishers, Manufacturers, Packaging, Retailers, Gift Wrap, Greeting Cards, Stationery, Apparel and Garment Manufacturers. There is an abundance of talent on display, from well established studios to exciting new artists, there is so much fantastic artwork to choose from for any industry .

We all look forward to seeing you in New York from the 17th – 22nd of May 2018!

It is also important to mention that clients will find exhibitors that license, some that offer limited rights usage and others that out right sell. There are many that offer a combination of two or three of those options. This year we have exhibitors coming all the way from Australia, Europe, Canada, Brazil and even El Salvador! The show is again split into two, the first running from the 17th – 19th of May, and the second running from the 20th – 22nd of May. There will be between 55 and 65 artists, designers and studios at each show, which is spread over the two floors of the Hudson Mercantile. The show is very well located near Hudson Yards, it is 3 minutes walk from the Javits and there are several deli’s very close to the venue. This venue has one of those rare commodities in New York, a roof patio that looks down onto the Hudson River. This is where we will have this years Blue Print ‘Meet and Greet’ party on the 20th of May in the evening. So hopefully the weather will be kind to us and the sun will shine! Three of the artists at the show have designed some amazing posters

SIGIS VINYLISM “The subject of my art is represented by the mouths – metaphor of words, interaction and universal love – differently coloured as the changes in my mood.” Matteo Antonio Sigismondi Vaccari, known as Sigis Vinylism, began his artistic life during the early 1990s as a professional DJ. He was inspired by the large black music discs that blasted out grooves. In 2007 he utilised them as an innovative form of artistic expression assuming unique forms. For Sigis the the vinyls are irreplaceable and dreamlike providing a voice for this thinking and through the lips he gives them a new immortal life. The lips enclose a soul, a past, a strong and silent protest. The discs change appearing without ever cracking. After many successful exhibitions in Italy and overseas, Sigis collaborated with world famous galleries such as the Gallery of Modern Art (GAM), the Pictorial Gallery in Monte Carlo and the 010101 International Art Gallery in St Petersburg and Moscow to name a few. At only 33, Sigis achieved the patent of the Artistic Movement as ‘Vinylism’ which has been recognised by the National Institute of Culture. In addition he has obtained the recognition as ‘Maestro of Art’ during the 54th Venice Biennale curated by Vittorio Sgarbi. After having participated at the 55th Venetian Biennale with ‘Back 2 Black at the Biennale’ -

an exhibition dedicated to the new artistic avant-garde - and with success at BrerArt 2013 in October of that year, the doors of his Art Atelier in Milan were opened. The place was transformed into a vibrant hub for artists, culture and events which focused on stimulating young artistic talents. The artwork of Sigis has also been exhibited at the Grimaldi Forum in Monte Carlo with ‘The Atlantic Code of Leonardo da Vinci’ which personifies a form of innovative and artistic communication. His artistic evolution has been rapid and intense

with new experiences and forms of art. The constant research for new designs and methods of incorporating vinyls was born from an extraordinary dynamic which perceives the study of reality in all its forms, interpreting surroundings through his own evocative perspective. Sigis defines his art into several forms such as still photographs, installations, digital media, pictures, videos and music, through an alternative route of reading the ‘truth’ with irony and sensibility which fully involves the viewer.
