Bang & Lee
About the artist Bang & Lee are Jayoung Bang and Yunjun Lee whose combines art, design and research. Their Bang & Lee are Jayoung Bang and Yunjun Lee, whose work combines art, design, and research. Often concerned with the theme of absurdity and irony, their installations involved assemblage, interactive light sculptures, tangible ceramic instruments, stage technology toward an immersive media, computer- generated montage, or video mosaics, and incorporate various historical references, fictions, and emerging notions of social media. Some of their latest projects engage in a variable screenplay, not only with interactive media in a theater or stage, but also within the virtual world, using hypertext to develop networking based events with emphasis on the particular interpretation of collaboration and
friendship. Their works have been shown at museums and festivals including Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (Germany), The International Biennial of Contemporary Art of Seville (Spain), Watershed in Bristol (UK), Nam June Paik Art Center in Yongin (Korea), Insa Art Space, Seoul Media Biennale – Media City Seoul, Daegu Photo Biennale, Arko Art Center, Seoul Museum of Art, Art Center Nabi, Alternative Space LOOP, Total Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul (Korea). http://twoonionrings.tumblr.com/

overview The workshop is based on the control of light. The illumination of architecture and interiors or the production of films and plays is possible. Light can be linked with other media such as sound, video and other mechanics, and used or designed as an independent artistic medium as a creative material. In this small and short-term workshop, the artist collective Bang & Lee will introduce some of their recent works related to the complex lighting installation and talk about their artistic use of light. In addition, they will illustrate the basics of digital lighting control, which is a technical programming approach associated with the aesthetic effect of different light sources.

Media Table for Batik Story
Hyojung SEO
About the artist Hyojung SEO, through interactive performance works which are an expansion of installation, is in search for various channels of communication between media and human, and seeks the possibility of media as the sixth sense that goes beyond our five senses. Her concerns are methods and processes of sensing through media, regarding those that are near and close, yet unperceived by us, such as small molecules which fill the space, memories that are left in space and object, and traces of motions. As she make everyday objects unfamiliar by combing them with the video and sound, audience can get the chance to see the ordinary life with a new view of perception. They understand and appreciate the unfamiliar situation based on their familiar reality. To make the object and space unfamiliar, she uses the media technologies like digital image recognition with camera, sound analysis with microphone and change detection with sensors. With adding virtual world to objects that exist in reality, she draws the audience into the work and change the way to face reality. She lays importance on the sharing of process, just as the nature of interactive works is to include the ‘experience’ itself as part of the whole. Thus, she creates opportunities to present her works in line with various workshops. Recent her work ‘museum of memories by object’
27
which borrow the format of museum was exhibited in Buenos- Aires(Argentina) and KitaKyushu(Japan) with different version. Local people who participated in the workshop collected and produced the contents of museum, and she changed the abandoned space in the community into museum. Audience could have the opportunity to see the ordinary place and object from a new perspective out of reality. By leading audience to participate in the process of making the work, she lays emphasis on the communion with audience. And audience intervenes with the work rather than appreciate passively. Besides her non-commissioned work, Hyojung Seo also makes interactive installations for major brand like Nike, Shu Uemura, SHISEIDO, Perriet Jouet, Peugueot and so on; she works at the Samsung Art and Design Institute. She also collaborates with many
choreographers and musicians for media performance. Hyojung Seo lives and works in Seoul. seo.hyo@gmail.com http://untitled5.com

a. add sound to movie Using Adobe Premiere, students added sound to movie they made.
Thought
1 At this time, students focused on making animation about how to make a batik design. It would be great to have more time to put their creativity on connecting pattern and stories.
b. programming with MAX MAX is a visual programming language for media. Using MAX, we could develop a program to figure out the identity of batik on the table and show the movie according to the ID of batik.
2 We expected we could get some sample materials from batik factory, but we couldn’t. If we could make small exhibition room with real material as we proposed, students could see more possibilities.
c. match movie and RFID card To make machine identify batik pattern, we used RFID card and reader. After printing the pattern of each batik, students put labels on RFID card. At this time, we used card which works in the 125kHz RF range. We can get data in 64-bit data stream [Header+ID+Data+Parity].
3 In class, I saw students teach and learn from each other. I’m looking forward to seeing that students keep teaching and learning after this workshop. Also, I left one of my RFID reader in school for students. I’d love to see that they keep developing and producing the data for their own batik story table until next year.

The Sound of KK About the artist Hojun Song is a cutting-edge, techobsessed Korean artist breaking boundaries with his passion for telling stories through technology. From building open-source satellites to constructing The Strongest Weapon in the World, the visionary leans on his engineering background to project mediations on society via his tactile installations. It’s clear that Song hopes to instill a sense of empowerment in the world, through the DIY nature and uplifting undertones in each of his works.
Preparation Rather than using a laptop to learn sound recording and editing skills, the workshop focuses on expanding the view of daily sounds. So the artist brought some recording gears and a computer and the participants used their cell phones as recording gears.

overview This is a sound design workshop. There are many ways we can create sound. Especially these days, we create sound using digital signal processing, i.e. using computers. In the workshop, rather than creating sounds directly from the computer, attendees captured sounds from daily objects, esp. objects that are related to KK. Various recording techniques were presented and interesting manipulating techniques like sample-based granular synthesis and convolution reverb filtering were also introduced. In the end, a simple dance loop sample was created using participants’ recorded samples.

Listening samples and stories Total of 15 participants brought 107 recorded samples.
Soundscape Participants learned the sound from daily objects could become a part of music the notion of soundscape by watching trailers of Interstellar movie and watching materials created by sound designer Diego Stocco. Microphones Different types of microphones and their applications are presented. Mainly, dynamic mic, condenser mic, electret mic, and contact mics are explained along with their directional characteristics. Participants were able to tell the differences of the recorded sound samples after hearing them one by one. Recording Recording sound from a computer using audio interface (Apogee duet) and using portable recorder (Tascam DR-100MKII)
Homework As participants were acquainted with simple recording techniques, they need to have chances record samples with their imaginations. Participants were required to record 2 samples: a simple sound & a unique sound. The examples were shown as below: Simple: Record existing sound • fruit eating sound: • soup eating sound: • body sound • toilet sound / flushing ..... • shower sound • snoring sound • farting Unique: Imagine and setup your own prop. to record sound • Chair rubbing • Aluminium hitting • door • bed • button • rubbing shoes
were shown. And lastly, recording sound from a cell phone was introduced. Only one guideline for the recording was shown: Do not get over-peak when recording a sound from any device. To show the guideline, the sound of bending chair back at the theater was recorded with portable recorder and cell phone.
Participants described how they recorded their samples while the sample was being played. But they had hard time describing the method because it was improvised the way they never done before. And they did not shoot the video, so all the participants had to imagine what the sound was like when the sample was being played.
The list of recorded samples from the participants were attached as Appendix 1.

Creating a beat from recorded samples
2nd day
Thought
To further expand the notion of soundescape, recorded samples were modified by audio filters and arranged in a timeline to create a loop of a beat.
1 The workshop was simple yet was able to learn from each other: sharing recording techniques and presenting possibilities of using daily sounds VS. how students perceive sound in KK and what are students’ daily objects in KK. 2 Easy to follow yet infinite possibilities: it’s all about what and how to record creative sound with participants’ imagination. 3 No video, just audio: since all the recordings do not have videos, it was hard to describe how the sound was recorded. But while describing recording method, all the other participants were able to imagine how the sound was recorded. So even for the future, no video recording will be necessary (other than archiving purpose maybe?) 4 2 hours per day, 2 days time was not enough: need more time to go through all the recorded samples from the participants’ homework. 5 More recording than editing: it’s more important to expand the view of sound recording than creating a music.
Free app called Audacity was used to manipulate the samples and to create a beat. Background hiss noise removal technique was explained as this technique is a must-do when recording a sample from outdoor using relatively cheap recorder - the cell phone. Then, samples from participants were laid out to create a beat using kick-like samples, snare-like samples, some melodic rubber band samples, and etc.

NOH Suntag & WON Seoungwon
About the artist NOH Suntag Born in 1971 in Seoul, South Korea, Noh is one of the most advanced and prominent photographers in South Korea. Working in both North and South Korea, his photography projects centers primarily on so- cial and political issues in contemporary Korean society such as the division of the Korean Peninsula. His projects are usually developed on an ongoing basis or over the course of several years such as his no- table series the StrAnge Ball (2004-2007) about the military presence of the US armed force in a small village in South Korea. Shoot in both black and white and color, Noh is known for his unique and uncon- ventional photography aesthetic which combines the documentary and the fictional. WON Seoungwon Hundreds of photographed images taken by artist herself transform into a fantastical image through her elaborate working with computer. The imaginary space with a story renders the contemporary individual’s life of yesterday, today, and tomorrow, and extends to the community life where that individual belongs to. In her work composed with the artist’s distinctive views based on a realistic logic and the
45
unfamiliarity by delicate imagination, the profound and heavy subject of human is revealed as a wit and visual amusement, as well as evoking an analogue feeling. Her work from an existing incident in reality delivers subtle emotions. And the image containing a story begins to infinitely expand onward like a three dimensional picture book which keeps unfolding new time and space page after page.
