THINGS TO SEE & DO RECREATION
THE FINGER LAKES
Native American legend explains the origin of the Finger Lakes by saying that the Creator looked upon this land with special favor and reached down to bless it, leaving the imprint of his hand, what we now call the Finger Lakes. Geology tells a little less romantic story, informing us that at the end of the last ice age, over one hundred-thousand years ago, massive sheets of ice, called glaciers, advanced southward from Canada carving deep trenches in the earth like a trowel. As the earth warmed and the glaciers receded, the trenches filled with water and formed what we now know as the Finger Lakes. There are 11 lakes that make up what are traditionally considered the Finger Lakes, known for their breathtaking natural beauty. The deep waters of the largest lakes, combined with the high hills alongside, create a “micro-climate ideal for wine production.

Planning a long weekend?
Check into one of Fair Haven’s cozy inns or B&Bs for a good night’s sleep. Spend the next day browsing the village’s quaint shops and pick up a souvenir made by one of the many local artisans. Don’t miss stopping at the Fly By Night Cookie Company. Their cookies are simply scrumptious! The whole family will enjoy the Sterling Nature Center for wildlife watching along the shore of Lake Ontario.
A longer vacation might include…

Whether it’s honey or jam or homemade cookies made with locally-grown and produced products, we have everything to satisfy your sweet tooth cravings. From north to south in Cayuga County, it seems like all roads lead to yummy goodness! Begin your sweet adventure in northern Cayuga County with a stop at Fly By Night Cookie Company in Fair Haven – famous for their homemade cookies, pastries, pies and cakes made from scratch with real eggs, butter, and fruit from local farms. From Fair Haven head south on Route 34 to Carolyn's Creations, a quaint village bakery located in Cato, offering cakes, cookies, pies and other tasty baked goods made from scratch with locally produced ingredients. LAKE COUNTRY
With eight lakes and the Erie Canal, Cayuga County has more freshwater coastline than any other county in New York State. From the Great Lake Ontario to tiny Lake Como, water experiences such as swimming, boating and fishing abound!
FROM FARM TO TABLE
Cayuga County and the Finger Lakes are famous for our fresh fruit, herbs, vegetables and dairy products. Many of our restaurants feature the freshest and the finest quality products from local farms on their seasonal menus.

PET-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES AND PLACES TO STAY There is no need to leave Fido home when you visit Cayuga County. We can help you find where to stay, play and even eat when you visit. Our accommodation charts will assist you in selecting places where your furry friend can lay his head after a long day of play. Many parks allow leashed pets, with proper paperwork. We have outdoor dining spots that supply water (and maybe even a treat or two!) for your four-legged friends, and some museums even allow pets! Always call ahead and find out any rules and regulations so your pet can make the most of their Finger Lakes vacation!
