TOURISM INDIA DECEMBER 2014

Page 1

Look back and step forward One more year passed after the global recession started a few years back and global tourism industry show the revival signs now. According to UNWTO’s latest figures, international tourism is set to hit a new record by the end of 2014 with over 1.1 billion international tourists travelling the world in one single year. During the first ten months of 2014, the number of international tourists grew by 5% according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, rising above expectations. Between January and October 2014, the volume of international tourists (overnight visitors) reached 978 million, 45 million more than in the same period of 2013. With an increase of 4.7%, international tourism continues to grow well above the long-term trend projected by UNWTO for the period 2010-2020 (+3.8%), and is set to end the year at over 1.1 billion. By region, the strongest growth was registered in the Americas (+8%), followed by Asia and the Pacific (+5%) and Europe (+4%). By subregion, North America (+9%) and South Asia (+8%) were the star performers, as well as Southern and Mediterranean Europe, North-East Asia and Northern Europe (all +7%). International arrivals in Asia and the Pacific increased by 5% (through October), consolidating the region’s growth trend of recent years. The best results came from South Asia (+8%), led by India (+7%), and from NorthEast Asia (+7%) where major destinations such as Japan and the Republic of Korea registered double-digit growth. Arrivals in Oceania grew by 6% owing mostly to the increase of arrivals in Australia and New Zealand. In South-East Asia (+2%), growth slowed down compared to 2012 and 2013 as a result of the decline in arrivals registered in Thailand. Overall, the year comes to end with positive note. Many new destinations emerged as potential rivals for existing giants. Almost all the state increased their budget allocation for tourism and aims high in the coming years. At the same time, current leaders like Goa, Kerala and Rajasthan are experiencing the heat of the stiff competition from neighboring states and countries like Sri Lanka and Maldives. As per the reports from Europe, the brand value of Incredible India and Kerala- God’s Own country are diminishing day by day. The official missionary and Industry leaders and other stake holders must aware of the situation and act accordingly to manage the potential threat in the future. Wish you all very Happy and Productive New Year. Ravisankar K.V. Editor

over to the Kerala Tourism Minister Mr. A P Anil Kumar. Mr. Chandy said Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s praise for Kerala tourism at the recent Chief Ministers’ meeting symbolised recognition for state tourism at the national level. “The Prime Minister has shown special interest in the developing possibilities of Kerala Tourism. The project under the Kerala Government's Mission 676 will be of benefit to the tourism industry as well as the public,” he added. Even though Kerala Tourism has conducted several campaigns at the national and international level to promote RT, this is first of its kind in the state, said Mr. A P Anil Kumar. He also pointed out that an awareness campaign will be launched next week to inform the people on the possibilities of tourism possibilities. "Various

television channels and cinema theatres will serve as a platform for the 'God's Own Country, People's Own Tourism' campaign,” he added. tudy to assess impact of International Media Campaign of Ministry of Tourism A study “Assessment of International media campaigns of the Ministry of Tourism was conducted in 3 countries namely USA, France and Australia to assess the impact of media campaigns launched in these countries from August, 2011 to March, 2012. The findings of the study revealed that the campaigns were rated as excellent in terms of quality, theme and appearance with the overall perception being rated as good. The findings also revealed a positive impact of Incredible India campaigns on the targeted masses. The survey covered travellers planning to visit other countries in the coming one year, which revealed significant impact on respondents, who decided to change their travel bookings to visit India in the coming one year after watching the Incredible In-

dia campaign advertisements. To facilitate development of tourism in a systematic and holistic manner, the Ministry of Tourism had commissioned preparation of 20 Year Perspective Plans for States/Union Territories (UTs) at the beginning of the 10th Five Year Plan. During the 10th Five Year Plan, overall allocation of Rs. 20.00 crore was made for the Market Research activities including 20 Year Perspective Plan. However, no separate allocation was earmarked for preparing the 20 Year Perspective Plans for States/UTs. An expenditure of Rs. 2.70 crore was incurred in preparing the 20 Year Perspective Plans for States/UTs. Preparation of 20 Year Perspective Plans was commissioned with the objective of development of tourism in the States in a systematic manner. These perspective plans, which give action plans for tourism development in the short-term and long-term, were sent to the State

Governments/UT Administrations to guide them in initiating action for development and promotion of tourism. This information was given by the Union Minister of State for Tourism (Independent Charge), Dr. Mahesh Sharma in reply to a starred question in the Lok Sabha recently.

crease of 33% in the number of passengers transferring between Air India and other Star Alliance member carriers, mainly through Delhi or Mumbai but also at other airports such as London or Newark. Frequent Flyers are also taking advantage of the Alliance benefits, with over 80,000 having earned miles while flying on Air India since July and more than 20,000 Air India Flying Returns FFP members having miles credited for flights on other Star Alliance member carriers. With its 99-strong fleet, a mix of B787 Dreamliners, B777s, A330s and the A320 family, it is one of the youngest in the world. A key boost to the brand comes from the

comfort that these aircraft offer. Air India introduced its Mobile Application on October 21, 2014 along with the launch of its Twitter handle (@airindiain) in the micro-blogging social media site. This is over and above the Facebook account that has been so popular with the travelling fraternity. Christmas brings cheer and jovial mood across all age groups and people celebrate this festival in their own distinct ways throughout the world. A contagious joie de vivre makes Jamaica a natural choice for holiday season celebrations. The island of upbeat festivals, inspired events and delicious cuisine - add a dash of holiday spirit and the recipe becomes irresistible. Although the island has never seen snow and its houses do not have chimneys, Santa Claus and his gifts are very much a part of Jamaica’s tradition, as are Christmas carols, such as Oh Holy Night and Silent Night - some can even be found in a reggae version. 30

Jonkanoo a traditional Christmas celebration in Jamaica which includes a great parade through the streets with Jamaicans dressed in colorful masquerade costumes, continuing a custom brought over from Africa by slaves. Traditionally, men wearing masks play different characters, which include the Cow Head or Horse Head, King, Queen (wearing a veil), Devil, Pitchy-Patchy, Red Indians, Belly Woman (a character dressed to look enormously pregnant) and Policeman, a mock officer of the law to keep the motley crew and crowd in check. The Grand Market is a community fair characterized by food, street dancing, crafts and music.

The weekend before Christmas and particularly on Christmas Eve, markets all over the island are set up with vendors selling small toys, firecrackers, balloons and sweets of all kinds, including pinda (an African word for peanut) cakes, grater cakes and peppermint sticks. Traditionally on Christmas Eve some markets are decorated with streamers, large accordion-style bells, and balloons. People arrive dressed up, in fancy clothes, including bright hats purchased upon entering the Grand Market. The whole town comes to Grand Market and the celebrations last throughout the day and night. The Christmas day meal is

usually prepared on Christmas Eve. Dining in Jamaica over the holidays is a festive experience filled with delectable delights. A traditional dinner is likely to include the specialties like Baked ham, roast beef, chicken, oxtail or curried goat, accompanied by a sweet yam called yampi and Gungo (pigeon) rice and peas. Jamaican fruitcake, made with fruits that are soaked for months in rum or port, with a final dousing at the Christmas table. Sorrel wine, created from the red fruit of the sorrel plant fermented to a sweetened, red-colored drink spiced with ginger, cloves and pimento and laced with white rum. Jamaican red wine and rum fruitcake is

traditional and is eaten in most homes. The fruits in the cake are soaked in red wine and white rum for months before Christmas. The drink of choice for Jamaicans during the Christmas season is sorrel which is made from dried sorrel (a meadow plant), cinnamon, cloves, ginger, sugar, orange peel and rum, the beverage is usually served over ice. It is undoubtedly the most festive season of the year, with nonstop celebrations, special treats, entertainment, parties, festivals and happy gatherings of friends and family. Jamaica offers visitors a great escape and the ideal winter getaway. 31

nternational tourism is set to hit a new record by the end of 2014 with over 1.1 billion international tourists travelling the world in one single year. During the first ten months of 2014, the number of international tourists grew by 5% according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, rising above expectations. Between January and October 2014, the volume of international tourists (overnight visitors) reached 978 million, 45 million more than in the same period of 2013. With an increase of 4.7%, international tourism continues to grow well above the long-term 36

trend projected by UNWTO for the period 2010-2020 (+3.8%), and is set to end the year at over 1.1 billion. “In view of this trend, international tourism is set to end 2014 with record numbers”, said UNWTO Secretary-General, Mr. Ta-

leb Rifai. “These are remarkable results considering that different parts of the world continue to face significant geopolitical and health challenges, while the global economic recovery remains rather fragile and uneven”, he added. “More importantly, we see a growing political commitment to the tourism sector in many countries. This is encouraging, not in the least because tourism is one of the sectors that is best able to deliver on employment at a moment when job creation need to be a priority to all”, he added. The Americas: the best results of the last decade

The Americas (+8%) led growth during the first ten months of 2014, rebounding significantly on last year’s subdued results. This is the region’s best performance since 2004, when international tourism also rebounded strongly, following the 2003 SARS outbreak. All subregions – North America, the Caribbean, Central America and South America –doubled the growth rates of 2013, with particularly positive results in North America in view of the extraordinary performance of Mexico and the United States. International arrivals in Asia and the Pacific increased by 5% (through October), consolidating the region’s growth trend of recent years. The best results came from South Asia (+8%), led by India (+7%), and from North-East Asia (+7%) where major destinations such as Japan and the Republic of Korea registered double-digit growth. Arrivals in Oceania grew by 6% owing mostly to the increase of arrivals in Australia and New Zealand. In South-East Asia (+2%), growth slowed down compared to 2012 and 2013 as a

result of the decline in arrivals registered in Thailand. Europe, the most visited region in the world, posted a 4% increase in international tourist arrivals through October, with strong results in Northern Europe and in Southern Mediterranean Europe (both +7%), where established destinations such as Greece, Portugal, Spain and Malta recorded robust growth. International tourism grew at a more modest pace in Western Europe (+2%) and was stagnant in Central and Eastern Europe (0%), in stark contrast with the last three years, during which arrivals grew at an average of 8% a year. International tourist arrivals in the Middle East are estimated to be up by 4% (in the first ten months of 2014), rebounding on the declines registered since 2011. All destinations in the region with data available report positive growth, with Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia all substantially improving their performance as compared to 2013. Africa’s international tourist numbers grew by 3%

(through October) with North Africa consolidating its recovery (+2%). Subsaharan Africa’s arrivals were up by 3% despite the challenges of the Ebola Disease Outbreak in a few West African countries. Data for Africa and the Middle East, nonetheless, should be read with caution as it is based on limited and volatile data for these regions.

he Myanmar Tourism Federation and Ministry of Hotels and Tourism is all set to host ASEAN Tourism Forum in 2015 (ATF 2015) at Nay Pyi Taw, the capital city of Myanmar, as it will expect to welcome about 3 million visitors in 2014. This is the 34th edition of this annual event which will be held from January 22-29, 2015 at the Myanmar International Convention Centre. ATF 2015 will be a golden opportunity for companies looking to establish brand awareness in the growing Myanmar market. ATF 2015 is hosted by the Myanmar Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, and is organized by the Myanmar Tourism Federation and managed by MP Singapore and Myanmar Ventures Group. It is expected to attract the interest of 1,500 participants from over 40 countries, including tourism ministers and officials, exhibitors, ASEAN international buyers, local and international press, as well as tourism professional and visitors. “We are ready to welcome and share with all our distinguished 38

delegates and visitors, Myanmar’s richness in culture and biodiversity; charm and hospitality of the multi ethnic people with the belief that ATF 2015 will be a special tourism milestone providing interaction of new ideas, knowledge and experiences and sharing products and services for the local tourism players to showcase their products and services to the global market, said Mr. U. Htay Aung, Union Minister, Ministry of Hotels and Tourism of Republic of the Union of Myanmar. In Myanmar, the operators of supply and demand will conduct negotiations for mutual economic benefit and has acquired excellent organizational skills in the field of events and has improved rapidly since the recent opening of the country to the world. The hosting of the 27th Sea Games & World Economic Forum in East Asia in 2013 confirms its belief that ATF 2015 in Naypyidaw is the ideal showcase for tourism, as it is a city with a receptive hotel that has 8,000 rooms in addition to the friendly offer of private accommodation which increases the

capacity to 10,000 rooms, as occurred during the Sea Games in 2013. The continuous evolution of hotel development in Naypyidaw suggests reaching 12,000 rooms by 2015. Meanwhile, housing for the hosted delegations have already been selected. Even international connections have improved in recent months in anticipation of increased demand. Bangkok Airways and Thai Air Asia are already operational. Mr. U Phyoe Wai Yar Zar, Chairman, Myanmar Tourism Marketing (MTM), said, “ATF aims to promoting ASEAN as a single destination and hosting of the event is rotated among the member countries each year. Participation from host country Myanmar is at an all-time high. The local hoteliers, tour operators and other players in the industry are very much looking forward to next year’s event, this being the first time that ATF is coming to Myanmar. It will be our opportunity to share our country’s rich history and culture with the rest of the world.”

The uncertainty over continuation of North East Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIPP) 2007 is to hit the growth of tourism industry in North East. Suspension of incentives available under NEIIPP will not only adversely impact industrial growth of North East but it will also amount to a major setback to integrating North East into the mainstream national economy. NEIIPP was introduced by the Government of India in April 2007. The policy provides a special package of fiscal incentives, subsidies and other concessions, with the objective of promoting industrialization of North East. The policy covers Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland,

Tripura and Sikkim. Outlining the positive outcome of NEIIPP, Mr. Sudesh Poddar, President, Hotel & Restaurant Association of Eastern India (HRAEI) said that it played an important role in positioning North East as a viable and competitive investment destination for the hospitality sector and helped in attracting capital investment in manufacturing and services sectors. It has had a positive multiplier effect on the region’s economy, by way of large-scale job-creation, youth empowerment through increased opportunities of skill development, infrastructure augmentation, strengthening social stability. It also generated substantial revenue for the exchequer.

To sustain the growth momentum, it is imperative for the North Eastern states to draw large investment in the hospitality industry. Infrastructure deficit occurring in the region’s tourism industry in a big way needs early correction. The sudden suspension of incentives available under NEIIPP will put in peril prospective investments of a staggering Rs. 30,000 crore. In this context, HRAEI President has submitted a memorandum to Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Commerce & Industry urging the government to revoke the suspension at the earliest and dispel any ambiguity over the continuation of NEIIPP. 39
