Retrospection for a futuristic Incredible India

I

t’s time to pull the curtain for one more year, which is passed by many positive notes and negative retrospections in national and global tourism spheres.

India has climbed up many positions in global tourism index and the policy changes have catalyzed the growth in foreign tourist arrivals. At the same time, the controversial omission of Taj Mahal, India’s most rated tourism icon from the list of tourism to terrorist attack in niece and other global cities has multifold effect in the growth of tourism in long term aspects. Our travel and tourism industry is not yet recovered from the blow of the catastrophic effects of the recently implemented GST issues. Infrastructure improvement is the prime needs for the travel and tourism industry. In the recent past, infrastructure bottlenecks have played major hindrance role in the growth of tourism in India. Fortunately, the recent development momentums in this area, especially our airports, sea ports, railway stations and road infrastructures have improved their facilities enormously. To harness India’s tourism potential, several efforts are being taken for opening new destinations and exploring niche segments. However, infrastructure facilities such as air, rail, road connectivity, and hospitality services at these destinations and the connecting cities are inadequate. Availability of skilled manpower is a major challenge faced by the travel and tourism industry. To sustain growth in the industry, trained manpower/ workforce is required at every level. Marketing and promotion of India as a major tourist destination is critical for the industry to achieve its potential. Lack of budgetary support for promotion and marketing, compared to competing tourist destinations, is another major reason for India lagging behind as a tourist destination. Travel and tourism in India is a highly-taxed industry, which makes India more expensive as a tourist destination. This affects the growth of the Industry and India is losing out to other low-cost destinations. Inbound tourism is the one most affected. Even after many corrections have done in GST tax structures, still the entire industry is bearing heat to withstand for the long term survival. India’s size and massive natural, geographic, cultural and artistic diversity offers enormous opportunities for the tourism industry. The promotion and aggressive marketing measures undertaken by the government is expected to aid influx of tourists. The industry would also benefit from introduction of new forms of tourism and development of niche segments. Medical tourism in India has gained considerable popularity in recent years. India has a major cost advantage in this field compared with other countries. In addition, Indian healthcare industry offers state-of-the art equipment, technological advancement, qualified and experienced medical personnel and a blend of modern and traditional medicines. Opportunities also exist in ecotourism, adventure tourism, and cruise tourism. Eco-tourism is increasing in popularity, evident in the development of eco-friendly hotels and tour packages. With increasing environment awareness and consciousness among tourists and given efforts undertaken by the government and private players, the ecotourism segment is expected to record handsome growth in the coming years. Security has been a major problem as well for growth of tourism for a number of years. Terrorist attacks or political unrest in different parts of the country have adversely affected sentiments of foreign tourists, the government needs to take a proactive approach in addressing these issues and in averting the potential impact on the industry. Nothing works if visitors are afraid and not secure. Cyber-crime will continue to be another major challenge to the industry. Also, unless the industry can protect visitor privacy and lower the incidents of fraud, it will face an ever greater and daunting challenge in the coming years. Higher disposable income and affordability have increased domestic leisure travel in India. India is expected to witness increased tourist activity both in the business and leisure segments in the coming years. International inbound traffic is expected to grow rapidly with increasing investment and trade activity. Our political system must try to change their attitude and sideline the difference of opinion in their extreme ideologies for the inclusive growth and development of our country. Overall the signs look very positive, but to achieve the targeted growth we must work together.

Steady growth for Asian outbound travel in 2017

A

sians are going on more international trips than ever, although the growth rate has slowed this year after a 9 percent increase in 2016. The main trends over the first eight months of 2017 include a continued rise in sun & beach holidays, more city trips and a good comeback for travel to Europe after a downturn last year, according to the results of 25th World Travel Monitor® Forum held at Pisa, Italy. The outlook for 2018 remains good with further mid-single-digit growth expected. The number of outbound trips by Asians grew by 5 percent between January and August 2017, as per the World Travel Monitor® figures. This is behind the very strong 9 percent increase achieved in 2016 but is in line with the World Travel Monitor® forecast of 6 percent growth for this year, which was made 12 months ago. “Asian outbound was exceptionally strong in 2016, especially due to high growth for intra-regional travel. This year we are seeing a return to a more normal long-term growth rate,” commented Rolf Freitag, CEO of IPK International, which conducts the World Travel Monitor®. Asian travelers head for beaches and return to Europe Asian travelers went on more leisure trips than ever this year, especially to beach destinations.

22 | Tourism India | December 2017

Holiday trips increased by 5 percent between January and August, thus maintaining a high 82 percent share of all Asian international trips. The number of sun & beach holidays increased very strongly by 15 percent over the first eight months, and they now account for 23 percent of all holiday trips, according to World Travel Monitor® figures. City trips continued to perform well with a very good 9 percent increase but the number of tours covering several destinations fell slightly. The average length of outbound trips by Asians was 6 nights so far, remaining at the same level as last year, while average spending increased by 2 percent. In terms of destination regions, Europe has proven popular with Asians this year with a 7 percent increase in trips over the first eight months, according to World Travel Monitor® figures. This is a clear comeback for Destination Europe which suffered a slight drop in Asian visitor numbers last year following various security incidents. In comparison, there was only a low 2 percent increase in Asian trips to the Americas over the first eight months of this year. Most Asians, however, travel within their own region. Intra-regional trips showed a healthy 4.5 percent increase between January and August. Good year for most Asian destinations

These trends for Asian outbound travel are also reflected in figures from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) which show a 6 percent rise in international arrivals in Asia and the Pacific from January to August this year. South Asia has led growth so far this year with a strong 10 percent rise, followed by South-East Asia (+8 percent) and Oceania (+7 percent). However, North-East Asia had relatively more modest growth of 3 percent due to mixed results, according to the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer for JanuaryAugust 2017. Dr. Martin Buck, Messe Berlin’s Senior Vice President Travel & Logistics, commented: “It looks like Asian long-haul travelers prefer Europe to the Americas this year, which is a clear sign that they have recovered confidence in visiting European destinations. At the same time, Asians want to relax on sun & beach holidays more than ever, while demand for city trips remains strong. These two trends offer good prospects for destinations around the world.” Looking ahead to 2018, another good year can be expected for Asian outbound travel, which will remain a driver of world growth. IPK International predicts a 6 percent rise in Asian outbound trips in 2018, based on its Asian Travel Confidence Index, which measures travel intentions for the next 12 months.

Destinations worldwide welcomed 901 million international tourist arrivals (overnight visitors) between January and August 2017, 56 million more than in the same period of 2016. year, 2017 is set to be the eighth consecutive year of continued solid growth for international tourism. Results reflect the sustained growth in many destinations combined with the recovery of those suffering from security challenges in recent years. Of UNWTO regions, growth was strongest in Africa (+9%) and Europe (+8%), followed by Asia and the Pacific (+6%), the Middle East (+5%) and the Americas (+3%). This strong performance is confirmed by experts from around the world surveyed for the UNWTO Confidence Index, who evaluated the May-August period very positively. Prospects for the last four months of 2017 remain also buoyant according to the experts consulted.

“Tourism is a major economic engine and employment generator, contributing to the improvement of livelihoods of millions of people around the world” stated UNWTO SecretaryGeneral Taleb Rifai in London, ahead of the World Travel Market. “As we draw to the end of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, we must reflect on how to manage tourism in a responsible and sustainable way beyond 2017. Maximizing the social and economic benefits of tourism while minimizing any negative impacts on host communities and the environment should remain at the forefront of our efforts in the years to come, with policymakers, companies and travelers all contributing to this shared objective,” Mr. Rifai added.

The Jews History & Heritage by Pushkaran

J

acob was one of the great patriarchs of the Old Testament. He was the father of twelve tribes of Israel and Jews were the descendants of his clan. God renamed Jacob “Israel” and the Jewish country was also known by that name. The word Jew originated from the Hebrew language ‘Yakudi’ and Latin language ‘Judais’. The Jews are few in numbers and time is not so far that they will get extinct from this Universe in near future. Studies say that around 50,000 Jews die each year. According to researchers data

36 | Tourism India | December 2017

Africa (1 lakh), Australia (50,000), India, Lithuania, Czech Republic (60,000 each). The Jews in least numbers are found in countries like Iraq, China, Egypt, Albenia and Cyprus (100-120 each).

currently there are around 85 lakh Jews all over the world, of which 52 lakhs are in America and are considered to be the richest Jews. The rest are spread out in Europe (20 lakhs), South America (4 lakhs), Canada (3.5 lakhs), South

During 13th century, the Jews after escaping from the Egyptian slavery eloped to Sinai mountain ranges under Mosses’ leadership. The Ten Commandments declared by Mosses during their eloping phase later became the foundation of the Jewish religion. By BC 10, all clans in Israel joined together and formed a Jewish empire. Though Saul

was the first Jewish King of Israel, Solomon was the noble and most renowned king as per the Jewish history. The fall of Israel began with the death of King Solomon. He was the one who built the famous temple for Jehova in Jerusalem. According to history, the vendetta between Israel and Jewish Kingdom which was otherwise

David’s kingdom remained for centuries. Later Emperor Alexander invaded and Israel came under the rule of Rome. In AD 70, Roman King Titus invaded Jerusalem and massacred thousands of Jews. History recorded this cruelty as ‘Diaspora’. Even during exile, the Jews dream of coming back to Jerusalem their Promising Land.

During the 7th and 8th centuries there was a great progress in the economic and social status of Jews. The Jewish Holy Book ‘Zohar’ became extensive in circulation during this period. By 17th century the Jews started inhabiting inside and outside Europe. The Jewish religion and customs were renovated with an influence towards European

culture and two new religious organisations ‘Hasidism’ and ‘Haskhala’ originated. Both organisations were adjudged as a religious renaissance for Jewish emancipation. By 19th century Jews in Europe got elevated positions in politics. Australian journalist Theodore Herzl in his book ‘The Jewish State’ has observed that a free nation is the only way for Jewish liberation. Be it in any country Jews were inflicted with hatred and harassment from the locals. The biggest holocaust in the world history was done by Hitler who killed more than 60 lakhs of Jews including women and children. During 1947 the UN General Assembly suggested to split Palestine and to create new nations for both Jews and Arabs which later lead to Arab-Jew

fight. At this juncture, Jews from different parts of the world who lived as migrants came back to Israel. Belief & Justice-Jewish Core Jewish religion is strongly built on unfaltering belief and total surrender. The religion was earlier known by the name ‘Rabbi’. The prophets of Judaism lineage were called Rabbis. “Talmud” written by Rabbis is the basic scripture of Judaism. The core of Jewish religion is justice. The religion teaches one should not do things to others that one hate. ‘Justice, Justice, that should be your way’ says the 20th verse in the 16th chapter of Moses’ 5th Book. Jews & Kerala Jews maintained a close connection with Kerala from

primeval period onwards. The Jews first came to Malabar and during 650 and 586 BC Jewish families came to Kodungalloor. Kochi also saw a huge flow of Jewish migrants to their land. Histories prove that Portuguese were a real threat to Jews and in AD 1661 they destroyed the ‘Paradesi Synagogue’. But the British and Dutch accepted the Jews. The special favour enjoyed by Jewish people during the reign of Bhaskara Ravi Varman has been preserved as inscriptions at the Mattancherry Jewish synagogue. The travellers who visited Kerala during 12th century has mentioned about the Jews in Kerala. During the time of independence there were around 2400 Jews in Kochi but by 2003 it diminished to 31. There were eight Jewish

synagogues in Malabar area during 1960. Jewish Religion The religion believes in single god worship. The Jewish religion was born from the protest of Abraham against idol worship. It was Mosses who released Abraham’s successors from slavery and guided to Israel. The Ten Commandments of Jahova first came to the hands of Mosses. ‘Thora’ was the divine knowledge that Mosses gained from the Sinai mountain ranges. ‘Thora’ means law or otherwise command. Jews strictly follow the god’s commandments and to them Jahovah is their creator and saviour. Jewish Customs One Jewish year consists of twelve lunar months and Jewish week starts with Sunday. With sunset begins a Jewish day. The Jews follow ‘Sabath’ (relaxation)

from Friday evening to Saturday night. As per the custom during this period they should not write, cook, light fire and travel beyond a distance. When a girl child is born, she will be christened by her father at a Synagogue. A boy at the age of 13 become ‘Bar Mitzvah’ and will be considered as a grown up. Pesaha Roshhasana, Koodara Perunnal, Pentecost, Fast of AV, Chanuka, Purim and Yom Hashoah are the major festivals of Jews. Pesaha and Pentecost are the agricultural festivals of Jews. During the Jewish month ‘Thisri’ they take fast and ask penance for the sin they have committed. Jewish Marriage The Jewish marriages are usually conducted either at Synagogue or in courtyard under a built-in roof called ‘Chuppah’. The groom will be called ‘Aroos’ and the

bridegroom called ‘Aroosa’. The bridegroom should take bath in the holy pond in the synagogue premises. The Jews insist on making the ring in silver which is considered as a family symbol. Jewish Cremation It is a strong belief among Jews that if they die they should be cremated in the holy Jewish soil. The dead body will be covered with a white cloth and after bathing. The body will be perfumed and later will be laden in the coffin. Those who attend the cremation tear their clothes after the function. The Jews should read ‘Kaddish’ for the coming one year after the cremation. The Jewish life is always under constant conflict. The Jews always dream of going to their Promising Land Jerusalem and they believe that they will get salvation only after reaching there.

Vietnam went through a long and costly armed conflict that pitted the communist regime of North Vietnam and its southern allies known as the Viet Cong against the South Vietnam and its principal ally, the United States. The war ended with the withdrawal of U.S. Forces in 1973. The Communist forces ended the war by seizing control of South Vietnam in 1975 and the country was later unified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Today Vietnam is a self confident and fast developing country and this is evident in it’s the booming metropolises.

Vietnamese food offers incredibly subtle in its flavors and outstanding in its diversity, the local cuisine is a fascinating draw for travellers. One can enjoy the local street food or try their hand at learning the local cuisine at one of the many cooking schools. Chinese flavors influence the soups of the north and the spices add flavours to the southern cuisine along with the herbs adding flavors to the central coastline. One can visit the countryside, mingle with villagers, sample local dishes and sip rice wine in Vietnam’s many local markets.

There are a number of sights and sounds that draw the crowds to Vietnam Halong Bay was designated a World Heritage site in the year 1994, it is located in north-east Vietnam and is known for its emerald waters and thousands of towering limestone islands topped by rainforests. The bay is dotted with 1600 islands and islets and covers an area of 1,500 Sq Kms. Typically visited by Junk Boats; one can either do a day trip or an overnight trip. Ideally an overnight trip is highly recommended. Hanoi is the capital City of Vietnam. The city blends with the new vibe and offers a charm of old Asia. Chaotic Old Quarter is at the heart of Hanoi with its narrow streets and local vendors set up shops near the street. One will find the locals in conical hats pass by on their bicycles, or a tourist enjoying a Cycle ride in the old quarter. Hanoi is where the paradox of modern Vietnam comes alive and the capital has an ancient history, colonial past and a modern outlook. Hoi An is located in Central Vietnam and known for its well-preserved ancient town, cut through the canals. Hoi An a former port city reflects the same in its architecture with mix of eras and styles from wooden Chinese shops and temples to colorful French colonial buildings, ornate Vietnamese tube houses and a iconic Japanese covered bridge with its Pagoda. Ho Chi Minh (earlier known as Saigon) is a city in southern Vietnam and played a very critical role in the Vietnam War. Famous for the French colonial landmarks

including the NotreDame Cathedral, 19th Century Post office and the food stalls lined in the streets around the famous Ben Thanh Market. Independence palace known has Reunification palace is also an important landmark of the city. Sapa a mountain town in North Western Vietnam is a popular trekking base. The town overlooks the rice fields of Muong Hoa Valley. Sapa offers spectacular mountain views on clear days. Fansipan Legend Cable car near Sapa offers breathtaking views of Hoang Lien Son Range and Muong Hoa Valley. “There are endless reasons to travel to Vietnam, the country has fascinating history, picturesque landscapes, lip smacking food, a trip to Vietnam can be serene, thrilling and relaxing”, says Jay Kantawala, Founder of WIYO travel. New Zealand’s Majestic Glaciers

T

here’s something undeniably impressive about glaciers, bodies of ice so dense that they’re constantly shifting under their own enormous weight. Understandably, adventurers are drawn to their beauty, travelling on foot, by ski, or buzzing above them in helicopters to steal a glimpse of nature’s majesty. Some of the worlds most accessible and majestic ice formations live in New Zealand, home to more than 3000 glaciers. South Westland’s World Heritage Jewel The bulk of New Zealand’s glaciers can be found inside the 2.6 million-hectare World

Heritage Area known as Te Wāhipounamu. Comprised of four national parks – Aoraki/Mount Cook, Westland Tai Poutini, Mount Aspiring and Fiordland – this picturesque wonderland is home to outstanding glaciers, snow-fed rivers and air so pure you wish you could bottle some to take home. Within the heritage area one can enjoy everything from physically demanding hikes across ice to scenic flights; hot pools to rain forests. In summer, the hiking is spectacular. In winter, mountaineers relish the climbing. Admire Tasman Glacier by Boat Tasman Glacier is New Zealand’s largest, and one of the few accessible glacial lakes on earth where one can watch icebergs

floating around. Rugged up warmly, visitors set off from Mount Cook Village before zipping across the surface of the lake in custom-made boats. Keep your eyes peeled for giant bodies of frozen water as they fall from the glacial face in a process known as “calving”. This is the only trip of its kind in New Zealand. Plane Sailing on Ice Mount Cook Ski Planes’ founder Harry Wigley started flying tourists around Aoraki/Mount Cook and over the glaciers in the 1950s. Necessity led him to invent a special retractable ski that allowed planes to take off from the airfield and land on the snow. The company still takes tourists to the pristine

Southern Alps, Tasman Glacier and Hochstetter Icefall. Choose to land on snow or glaciers, or pick the more affordable but shorter scenic flight option. If you’re fit and feeling adventurous, the possibilities include skiing, ice climbing and snowshoe adventures. Flights take off year-round from Aoraki Mount Cook Airport, but booking ahead is advised. Weather conditions can change quickly so be flexible about when you fly. The nearest town is Mount Cook Village, where there’s only a small convenience store at the hotel, so stock up on provisions in Twizel, 65km away. High hopes with Fox Guides Heli-hiking on Franz Josef Glacier is an experience to treasure forever, an outing that includes a helicopter ride and a three-hour guided hike through this land of towering peaks and ice of alpine blue. The Fox Trail Terminal Face Walk is an informative

and leisurely walk of two hours (complete with a chance to check out the glacier’s “snout”) accompanied by a guide who’ll share Maori legends and scientific facts, or else one could just go for a soak in Franz Josef Glacier Hot Pools. Delicious Fishes: Glacier-Raised Salmon Salmon raised in the waters that run from Aoraki/Mount Cook are some of the most delicious you’ll find anywhere in the world. This is partly due to the clean quality of freezing, swift and highly oxygenated currents, and also because there’s virtually no pollution, no parasites and more over farmers don’t use hormones. Salmon farms in this region welcome visitors and sometimes not only can you feed the orangefleshed fish, you can learn how they’re produced. Best of all, one can purchase this super food to eat or takeaway.

Sky’s the Limit For pure perspective and eyepopping scenery, little beats seeing glaciers from above. Not only does a flight across Tasman, Franz Josef or Fox glaciers give unparalleled views of these natural wonders, you’ll also understand how these masses of ice have carved out spectacular glacial valleys. An Air Safaris ‘Grand Traverse’ scenic flight takes in all three glaciers as well as Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, brilliant azure lakes and the spring and autumn colours of the vast alpine sheep stations. Operating from Tekapo or Franz Josef, the wings of the aircraft are fixed above the windows to allow for maximum viewing. The best season for flying is between October and April, with more than 85% of flights operating. Tekapo, in the heart of the South Island, is a three-hour drive from Christchurch and close to Mount Cook. Franz Josef, on the west coast, is a dramatic five-hour drive from Queenstown.

Ultra-luxe New Zealand accommodation tempts rich and famous

L

uxury homes in New Zealand’s most idyllic locales give the rich and famous a slice of antipodean heaven. From Katy Perry to Lady Gaga, some the world’s most famous people chill out at New Zealand’s most luxurious (and best-hidden) holiday homes. Pop Star’s Southern Paradise Justin Bieber and Katy Perry have both taken time out from their schedules to soak up the southern splendour of Queenstown at Lodge at The Hills. Located in The Hills golf course, and owned by Kiwi jewellery king Sir Michael Hill, this spot is worthy of such attention. The six-suite estate

48 | Tourism 48 | Tourism India | December India | December 2017 2017

includes an art studio, music and media room and wine cellar dining room. It also boasts a heated infinity pool, spa pool, sauna private golf course and outdoor fireplace. Sound good? It should – the high-season rate is NZ$32,250 a night. The Hills is located near Arrowtown, a former gold-mining village on the Arrow River. It’s the perfect spot for walking, cycling or winter sports – and gold panning (although you probably don’t need gold if you can afford The Hills). Fantasy Island This private island/nature reserve in the Bay of Islands is the perfect escape for anyone with a bit of

time and money on their hands. Kauri Cove is a beachfront house on Moturua Island designed by award-winning New Zealand architect Pete Bossley. Featuring a modest four bedrooms, and a kitchen/living space that spills out over an emerald lawn, the property is packed with added extras including a helicopter hangar and heli-pad, spa pool, private garden and (by arrangement) a private chef. Starting rate is NZ$16,500 a night. Moturua Island is accessible either by helicopter or boat transfer from Paihia From Russia, with Love In Russia Dachas are modest

holiday homes outside cities. The Dacha in Wanaka is a slightly different proposition: a luxury lodge with panoramic views over craggy alpine peaks and glacial valleys. Features of the lodge include 4.8m vaulted ceilings, a schist-clad fireplace and an expansive outdoor area with 180-degree views of Lake Wanaka. One can also enjoy the jet-massage spa, international art collection and heated swimming pool (in summer). A steal at just $7500 a night. Wanaka is an alpine resort town with a less touristy vibe than nearby Queenstown. The ski fields of Cardrona, Treble Cone and Snow Farm are all within 40 minutes’ drive and there is a wide range of other outdoor activities on offer. The area is also celebrated for its wineries. Waiheke Haven Waiheke Island is no longer the preserve of counterculture

types wanting to get away from it all. Ultra-luxe arrived with the vineyards and wineries – and with the exclusive Fossil Cove Estate. Situated on a headland with to-die-for views of Hauraki Gulf in every direction, Fossil Cove features a 17m infinity pool, onsite helipad and chef service. Lady Gaga chose this as an Auckland hideaway – at $10,500 for a three-night minimum stay, it’s the preserve of pop stars and the mega-wealthy. Waiheke is one of Auckland’s most popular tourist destinations, with a wealth of pristine white beaches, vineyards and wineries. Catch a passenger ferry from the CBD to Matiatia Bay, or take the car ferry from Half Moon Bay to Kennedy Point. Island idyll Only accessible by helicopter or boat, Hurakia Lodge on Rakino Island in the Hauraki Gulf is as far

away from civilization as you can get in Auckland, New Zealand’s biggest city. With five double ensuite bedrooms, including the President’s Suite – featuring a two-person bath with water views – it’s an ideal place to share with your moneyed mates. There’s an outdoor lap pool, spa and infrared sauna to enjoy, and you can request a personal chef if cooking is not your thing. A steal at just NZ$8000 for the entire lodge for two nights. Access to the property has to be arranged by the owners – either via helicopter or 35-minute boat ride from central Auckland. With few permanent residents, Rakino Island is perfect for isolated escapes. Many of the beaches don’t have public access, but boat tours of the bays can be arranged with the lodge’s owners. Luxuriate in the private spa and enjoy the moody seascapes during autumn and winter.

A

new visa counter has been launched to facilitate the visa application process and grant both transit and arriving passengers visas to Abu Dhabi within 15 to 30 minutes. The new service, located at the Terminal 3 transit area at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH), includes activation of the new four-day, or 96-hour, transit visa for all nationalities travelling through Abu Dhabi International Airport. Announcement of the new service was made by the Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi, jointly with Abu Dhabi Airports, Etihad Airways and General Directorate of Residence and Foreigners Affairs - Abu Dhabi.

50 | Tourism India | December 2017

The launch of the new visa counter is part of the Life in Abu Dhabi initiative, in support of the Enriching Tourist Experience. Established in May 2017 as part of the Government Services Office at Abu Dhabi Executive Office, Life in Abu Dhabi is an annual gathering aimed at developing a number of public sector services for the government of Abu Dhabi. The new counter will issue several types of mission and tourist visas available to travellers who do not fall under the current visa upon

arrival scheme. Passengers can now approach the visa counter in T3 to apply for, and obtain the relevant visa within a maximum 30 minutes. In addition, the visa counter is now issuing the new 96 hour transit visa, which is a key part of Abu Dhabi’s ongoing efforts to attract more visitors to the capital. The AED 300-visa can be used by passengers with planned trips from AUH, or with intermediate flights through Abu Dhabi en route to their destination if their layover exceeds four hours. The transit visa can be applied for both at the new visa counter on arrival, or through the online designated portal, provided passengers meet the application criteria. Travellers can also

request to change their transit visa to a tourist visa at the airport if they are planning to extend their stay in the capital. Brigadier Mansour Ahmed Ali Al Dhaheri, Director-General of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, said, the launch of the new entry visa system strengthens the country’s efforts to maintain its regional leadership and position on the global map in the fields of tourism, economy and education. The benefits of the advanced system cover several areas aimed at advancing competitiveness. The new system offers several benefits including the unification of work standards and procedures, as well as equipping health, education and tourism sectors with advanced, modern laws and regulations.”

Abdul Majeed Al Khoori, Acting Chief Executive Officer at Abu Dhabi Airports, commented: “We are very excited to cooperate with our stakeholders and launch this new offer to our travelers. The 96 hour visa will be instrumental to attract the large number of transfer passengers to experience Abu Dhabi and its vast offerings during their stopover”. Mr. Saif Saeed Ghobash, Director General, Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi, said, “ This initiative will enhance Abu Dhabi’s accessibility to more passengers from around the world and invite them to discover the Emirate, which has quickly become a destination of distinction for its rich cultural experiences and exciting familyfriendly activities. The move is expected to drive an increase in the number of hotel guests from around the world to all three regions of Abu Dhabi. October 2017 figures revealed an 18 per cent increase in visitor numbers compared to the same month last year, with 418,883 domestic and international visitors checking in to one of the Emirate’s 163 hotels or hotel apartments. October’s rise has

maintained the Emirate’s eight per cent increase over the year in terms of the numbers of hotel guests, and this number is on track to surpass the 2016 total of 4.4 million guests. Mr. Mohammad Al Bulooki, Etihad Airways Executive Vice President – Commercial, said: “The new transit visa is a great initiative for the emirate and for visitors, as now everyone is able to take advantage of Etihad Airways’ unique stopover offers, which feature a range of benefits including at least one night’s accommodation for any guest transiting through Abu Dhabi. This is a great way for visitors to create a ‘holiday within a holiday’, or simply break a long trip with a relaxing city break and enjoy the many attractions Abu Dhabi has to offer.”

Still it is no surprise that the growth of the global travel industry is being led by Asian travellers and the Middle East

India is also attracting visitors from the GCC, which is a top source market for medical tourism, and is expected to grow, as an entire industry, to $8 billion by 2020 from the $3.9 billion of 2016. While the west coast resorts, such as Goa, remain popular with Middle East travellers, given its close proximity to the region.

This

is supported by India’s steady GDP growth, which stood at 7.1% in 2016 and, although this is forecast to drop to 5.7% this year due to the introduction of a general sales tax, it is expected to recover and steady at 8% over the next few years.” “At 61%, India’s youth population is exceptional, providing a great opportunity to develop lifestyle and budget brands that offer differentiated products and experiences.”

ATM 2018 has adopted Responsible Tourism as its main theme and this will be integrated across all show verticals and activities, including focused seminar session, featuring dedicated exhibitor participation. ATM is considered by industry professionals as a barometer for the Middle East and North Africa tourism sector, welcomed over 39,000 people to its 2017 event, including 2,661 exhibiting companies, signing business deals worth more than $2.5 billion over the four days.

Local clean-up drives and native tree sapling planting programs are also underway. The target of these programs is to reach out to the public about the necessity for nature conservation. The mud houses are architectural marvels constructed using custom-made chemical-free and completely eco-friendly mud-bricks and thatched grass roots laid by local tribesmen called Muthuvans, in their traditional style. The ethnic mud walls are perfect contrast to the contemporary interiors - a novel experience that awaits you at Ecotones where one can enjoy the rustic flavor of a hut, equipped with modern amenities. You can relish some of the local delicacies of the High Ranges - an

overwhelming mĂŠlange of spices, tubers and meats at Inji, the ethnic restaurant. To add the true flavor of local cuisine, the menu is very traditional and does not offer exotic or Continental cuisine. The local ethnic food prepared from locally-sourced ingredients gives an opportunity to sample local flavors and delicacies. Kappa (a delectable main course of steamed tapioca aka cassava) served with the local red chilly-flavored fish curry, Inji curry (a ginger-based side dish traditionally served with red rice and other vegetable accompaniments), Avial (a coconutbased mix of several vegetables with special hill-side inclusions such as Chinese potatoes or koorka) and local slow-cooked chicken curry are just a few of our many specialties. Watch the gentle sun rays dance through your bamboo screens and do look out for one of our favourite birds - a beautiful metallic blue and black songster who will serenade you at dusk and dawn with his melodious whistles - the endemic Malabar whistling thrush or whistling schoolboy, found only in the Western Ghats. Ecotones are nestled at the foothills of the High Ranges - in the small hamlet of Muthuvankudi - just a forty-minute drive from the Munnar town. The beautifully scenic Chengulam Dam is less than a kilometer away from Ecotones. Boating, Bird watching, Butterfly walks, Cycling, Interactions with local farmers, Local cuisine demonstration, Local school visits, Nature trails, Photography sessions, Village walks, Spice plantation visits and Munnar sightseeing are the activities.
