Light at the end of the tunnel F

or customers booking flights, value for money matters most when it comes to choosing a particular airline. This was the answer given by 70 per cent of the CEO Management Panel of ITB Berlin, in a recent survey of exhibitors and business partners carried out by the market research company Trendscope and ITB Berlin. For 63 per cent of those polled the second most important factors when choosing an airline were the departure airport and choice of flight times. 37 per cent customers said they only booked flights with a certain airline. For 24 per cent it was important that the airline operated modern aircraft. Customer loyalty to home carriers played an insignificant role. According to the survey nine per cent preferred to book flights with “their” national airline. Only four cent were willing to forfeit value for money. Dr. Martin Buck, director of the Competence Center Travel & Logistics at Messe Berlin opined that “Worldwide, airlines are competing with each other in a hotly contested market. Customers reward airlines that offer transparent services and good value for money with their loyalty because they feel they are being treated well. If a national carrier is unable to fulfil those demands then it loses its emotional bond with the customer.” The advantages of a frequent flyer programme were also among the reasons for choosing

a particular airline. According to the survey this mattered to 42 per cent. 36 per cent were divided over whether frequent flyer programmes were important, while 22 per cent said they did not influence their booking choice. Asked which continents and regions operated the world’s best airlines, the CEO Management Panel of ITB Berlin revealed a clear trend that also reflects global market developments. Among those decision-makers polled, the most popular airlines were from Asia including the Arab countries followed by Europe. The least rated airlines were from North America, Australia, South America and Africa. The aviation industry in India is bleeding like anything. The fate of King Fisher is still in the air and Paramount Airways already faded out from the scene. National carrier is surviving only due to government support. The other private carriers are trying their level best to survive. Still overall situation is not at all favour for further investment. But recent decision on FDI in aviations shows some light at the end of the tunnel. Etihad and Air Asia are already confirmed their talk with Jet Airways and Videocon group respectively to enter the Indian skies. Hope this year will bring more happy and prosperous news to everyone. Have a Great 2013.

n a significant acknowledgment of tourism as a tool for promoting sustainable development, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution stressing ecotourism’s role in the fight against poverty and the protection of the environment. In line with the recommendations of the UNWTO report, the resolution underscores the need for national tourism plans to account for market demand and local competitive advantages. It also encourages Member States to promote investment in ecotourism, in accordance with their national legislation, including creating small and medium-sized enterprises, promoting cooperatives and facilitating access to finance through inclusive financial services such as micro credit initiatives for the poor, local and indigenous communities, in areas of ecotourism potential and rural areas.

Nepal looks to boost Pilgrimage Tourism through road shows in Madurai and Trichy In an effort to attract pilgrimage tourists from South India, the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) recently organised road shows in Madurai and Trichy. Mr. Rohini Prasad Khanal, Senior Officer - marketing & Promotion, NTB, said that the objective of the road shows was to facilitate mutual growth in the tourism sector. He pointed out that South Indians, especially those from Tamil Nadu, preferred to visit religious places and NTB is keen to promote Mount Kailash-Manasarovar. Nepal had a variety of tourist spots to attract tourists across age groups and has established itself as the gateway to Mount Kailash-Manasarovar. In 2012, Nepal received 164,680 tourists

from India by air which is 13.3% increment compared to last year. Nepal has always been popular with Indians as a recreational, shopping and pilgrimage destination. Nepal is a prominent destination amongst Hindus across the world. Earlier known as the only Hindu Kingdom of the world, Nepal is thronged with thousands of Shiva-devotees especially during Mahashivaratri to pay homage to Pashupatinath. There is a popular belief prevalent among the Hindus that a visit to these sacred sites will ensure a prosperous earthly life and a rewarding after-life. No visa requirement, good air connectivity with almost 55 flights per week between Kathmandu and Indian cities of Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Varanasi, easy access by road, year round pleasant weather, favourable exchange rate for Indian currency are some of the major factors that contribute to Nepal’s popularity as a favourite holiday destination amongst Indians.

Business sessions (Buyer and sellers meet) will be held in all 4 cities. This will be an excellent platform for the Indian travel agents to meet the Malaysian hoteliers & product owners, tour operators and tourism boards. Trade dinners will also be organized in each city for the local travel trade. Besides that, presentations by selected Malaysian industry players will be held to introduce new and exciting products. India is a top ten market for Malaysia, with a total of 690,849 tourists recorded in 2010. In 2011, the number of tourists increased to 693,056. In 2012, from the period of January to September, a total of 514,926 tourists from India have been recorded, showing a 2.6% growth compared to the same period last year (501,828). This promotional effort expected to increase the numbers significantly, through heralding a greater awareness of Malaysia as an ideal holiday destination, as well as fostering greater cooperation between tour operators and members of the tourism fraternity.

he state of Tamil Nadu has something to offer to its every visitor. Whether you are a culture seeker, a pilgrim making his steady progress, an adventure buff or a history lover, you will surely find something about this unique land that will catch your fancy. The picturesque, green Udhagamandalam better known as Ooty, is the most popular hill station of not just Tamil Nadu, but the whole of South. Located in the Western ghats at a height of 2240m, Udhagamandalam is the headquarters of the Nilgiri (meaning blue hill) district where the two ghats ranges meet. Conoor (19 km) and Wellington, two sleepy towns, are close to it and comprise the other hill stations of the Nilgiri District. It is also the starting point of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, built in 1908 by Britishers, which is an engineering marvel. The ride to the plains on the hundred year old mini-train never fails to bring out the child in every adult! Located 89 kms from Coimbatore, Ooty deservedly earns its reputation as the ‘Queen of Hill Stations’ for its extensive tea plantations, lakes and other natural splendours. Nature has been generous with this region, which is by far the most beautiful in the state. Apart from coffee and tea plantations, trees like conifers, eucalyptus, pine and wattle dot the hillside in Udhagamandalam and its environs. Uprooting the common belief that Ooty’s economy thrives on tourism, it is still largely dependent on agriculture, notable for the cultivation of ‘English Fruits and Vegetables’ grown locally. It has a subtropical highland climate with the summer temperature rarely going higher than 250c and lower than 100c and winter is distinctly cooler with a high of 210c and a low 50c. Curiously enough, this slice of paradise remained unknown to the great southern dynasties and it took the British to discover it in the early 1800s. They were, however, not the first

inhabitants of this land as a tribe called Todas had been living there long before the British came, claiming that the Nilgiris had been their home since time immemorial. Later, the Todas handed over the land to the then Governor of Coimbatore, John Sullivan. But the credit for modernising Udhagamandalam and making it accessible goes to the British who constructed the first railway line in the area and made it the summer capital of the Madras Presidency. Nilgiri is India’s first biosphere. It has been declared as one of the 14 ‘hotspots’ of the world because of its unique bio-diversity. Nilgiri presents a truly breath taking kaleidoscope of visual treats and soul stirring experience with its rolling grasslands, dense sholas, waterfalls, streams, lakes, vast expanse of tea plantations, interspersed with vegetable gardens, spectacular view points, an amazing variety of flora and fauna, fabulous trekking trails, innumerable heritage sites, spell binding sunrises and sunsets, magical light, pollution free atmosphere, mist, clouds, fog, star studded skies, serenity etc. It is one of the oldest mountain ranges, located at the tri-junction of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. Ooty is a best place to know the culture and tradition of India and tribal people. Government Rose Garden and the Ooty Botanical Garden remain to be the spots cherry-picked by all tourists. Ooty lake boating is a remarkable spot which highly entertains the tourist. On the hills above the Botanical Garden are a few Toda huts where Todas still dwell. The huts are a remarkable structure and a must see. Stone House, St. Stephen’s Church, Wax World, Golg Course, Tribal Museum, Lamb’s rock and Dobabetta peak, Kalhatty falls kandal, cross shrine, mini garden, Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park are some of the other tourist spots of Ooty. To feel the touch of nature, Ooty is a right spot for the lover of nature.

n a bid to further expand its reach in India, the Canadian Tourism Commission, (CTC) India organised a three-city workshop in Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata in December 2012. Following their new marketing strategy of expanding their sales network, CTC has decided to conduct workshop and sessions across several Indian cities. Over the years, Canada has been recognised as a major tourist destination and is ranked as the second most powerful country in the world, as per the Country Brand Index (CBI), published this year. The destination is relatively new in the Indian market however the good sign is that there will be growth every year. angaur is a significant festival of Rajasthan, especially meant for the women. The word Gangaur is derived from two words, ‘Gan’ and ‘Gauri’ which are synonyms of ‘Siva’ and his consort ‘Parvati’ respectively who together symbolize ‘saubhagya’ meaning marital bliss. Gangaur festival of Rajasthan is celebrated in the honor of Goddess Gauri, who is considered the symbol of virtue and fidelity and is the mythological role model of married women. It is believed that she holds all the qualities of a good wife. Gangaur festival of Rajasthan celebrates the union of the two and is a symbol of conjugal and marital happiness. Gangaur festival is celebrated in the month of chaitra (March-April), the first month of the Hindu calendar. This month marks the end of winter and the onset of spring. The festival of Gangaur starts with the subsequent day of Holi and persists for 18 days. The womenfolk worship Gauri with all the means of devotion. The married women worship Gauri for the well-being of their husband, while the unmarried girls worship to get the husband of their choice. This is also an auspicious day for young people to select their life partners. A newly-wedded girl observes a fast for the full course of 18 days of the

festival that succeeds her marriage. Even unmarried girls fast and eat only one meal a day. Colourful processions with the town band playing horses and elaborate palanquins make it a fascinating spectacle. This worship which starts form the first day of the chaitra month culminates on the 18th day with a great religious fervor. The festival begins with the custom of gathering ashes from the Holi Fire and burying the seeds of barley in it. After it, the seeds are watered everyday awaiting the germination. They carry painted matkas (water pots) on their heads. They also make images of Gauri and Isar (Shiva) with clay. During the last days of the festival, the celebration reaches to its height. On the final day, lively images of Gauri are taken out in procession escorted by traditionally dressed camels, bullock carts, horses and elephants. Songs are sung about the departure of Gauri to her husband’s home, thus culminating the 18 day festival of Gangaur.
