New challenges on the way
lobally the countries again tightened travel restrictions in response to new virus outbreaks and global tourism has suffered further setbacks at the beginning of 2021 following a difficult end to 2020. Earlier this year it has shown a movement towards easing or lifting restrictions on travel but now the emergence of new variants of the COVID-19 virus has prompted many governments to reverse the action to ease the restrictions. The optimism that the arrival and initial distribution of vaccines would lead to a prompt and orderly restoration in global air travel has been dashed in the face of new outbreaks and new mutations of the disease. The persistent seriousness of the epidemiological situation has caused governments to adopt a more cautious approach and make more strict protocols and with closures to tourists in Asia, the Pacific, and Europe. Now worldwide one in three destinations are completely closed to international tourism. 69 destinations have completely closed the borders to tourists and among them, 30 are in Asia and the Pacific, 15 are in Europe, 11 are in Africa, 10 are in the Americas, and in the Middle East 3 destinations closed the borders. As per the latest scenario, it is predicted that the recovery of international travel will be pushed to the second half of 2021. Slowing down the removal of
worldwide travel barriers and restrictions currently in place are depressing demand to travel and reducing consumer confidence. The latest economic forecast by WTTC gives hope to businesses and millions of people employed in the Tourism sector worldwide for the year ahead. The revival of the sector is backed by WTTC’s most optimistic scenario which predicts that as many as 111 million jobs could be revived with travel recovery starting from late March, depends on the factors vaccination programmes, and comprehensive test-and-trace regimes together with consistent and strong international coordination in the private and public sectors. Now the world is more locked down than in the past 12 months and due to the rapidly changing and globally uncoordinated travel restrictions, the passengers are facing different challenges. It will be better if the governments can work with the industry to develop 7 the standards for vaccination, testing, and validation that will enable them to have the confidence to reopen borders and resume international air travel. Using Technological solutions like Apps that can easily and securely manage the travel in line with any government requirements for COVID-19 testing or vaccine information can also ease the confusion of the travellers and restore the confidence. PEOPLE WANT TO TRAVEL AGAIN Personal safety is very important on a private trip – well-being is more important than travel choices. Fewer business trips planned for 2021 – outdoor activities are becoming more popular.
P
eople plan to spend more on travel again in 2021 the end of the pandemic will likely spur long-term growth. ITB Berlin and Statista present a new survey on travel behaviour in Germany, the US and China. A recent online survey has been conducted in Germany, the US, and China investigating travel behaviour of the past 12 months as well as travel plans for 2021. Who is longing to travel far away? Who finally wants to go on a beach holiday again? Who is planning what trips to where this year? And what is the short to long-term impact of the coronavirus pandemic on travel behaviour? are some of the questions that ITB Berlin and the market research institute Statista have been examining. The survey’s findings reflect a positive mood. Around 70 per cent of those surveyed in Germany, the US and China are thinking about private trips this year. Specifically, 37 per cent of Germans, 42 per cent of Americans and 66 per cent of Chinese are planning one or more trips. Close to 25 per cent of respondents in Germany and the US and over 35 per cent 10

in China also believe they will spend more money on travelling over the next 12 months than during the same period to date. In China there also appears to be significant pent-up demand for travel, where close to 50 per cent of interviewees think they travel more on an ongoing basis once the coronavirus pandemic has passed, compared with 25 per cent in the US and 17 per cent in Germany. The majority of people not planning to travel this year say this is due to the coronavirus pandemic. It comes as no great surprise that the pandemic still heavily influences holiday plan-

However, it is worth noting that perceived personal safety on a trip weighs more than travel choices being restricted. 50 per cent of Germans not planning to travel in 2021 say they feel uneasy about taking trips during the coronavirus pandemic. In the US the corresponding figure is 34 per cent, and in China even 56 per cent. By comparison, only 23 per cent of German respondents, 21 per cent of Americans and 45 per cent of Chinese state travel restrictions as their reason for staying at home. Thus, tour operators this year face the challenge of instilling a sense of safety and well-being among their customers. A closer look at people’s travel plans in 2021 shows a preference for beach holidays in all countries, with 34 per cent of Germans, 36 per cent of Americans and 42 per cent of Chinese taking them into consideration. However, for 37 and 42 per cent of Germans and Americans respectively, visiting family and friends comes first, whereas for 49 per cent of Chinese city breaks are most important. The majority of respondents in all countries plan to stay
in hotels, although the figures vary significantly from country to country. In China 86 per cent of private travellers intend to stay in hotels, whereas in the US and Germany the proportion is much lower, at 56 and 42 per cent respectively. In Germany and the US close to one-third of prospective travellers in 2021 intend to stay overnight with family or friends. In China, the corresponding figure is only 16 per cent. It is presumed that among other things the living conditions in the respective countries are responsible for these variations. Holidaying at home – Germans also plan to take trips abroad Questioned as to their longterm plans for the future, 35 per cent of German respondents, 38 per cent of Americans and 50 per cent of Chinese believe their travel behaviour will change longterm. The reasons given were environmental considerations (47 per cent in China) and the coronavirus pandemic (83 per cent in Germany, 64 per cent in the US, 83 per cent China). Among those who say their travel behaviour

In China and the US only 29 and 15 per cent respectively of those planning trips are aiming to go abroad. The figure for Germany is significantly higher, at 61 per cent. It is presumed that
Germany’s location in the middle of Europe and proximity to many other countries is responsible for the higher number of international trips planned. In addition to their private travel plans interviewees were asked about possible business trips. In contrast with private trips, the findings on business travel point to a downward trend. In Germany only 27 per cent, in the US 34 per cent and in China 51 per cent of respondents are planning business trips in 2021. This is also reflected in the answer to a question on long-term changes in travel behaviour. A high proportion in all cases, namely 65 per cent of Germans, 66 per cent of Americans and 63 per cent of Chinese interviewees agree with the statement “I will take fewer business trips.“ Outdoor activities appear to be on the rise, with 61 per cent of Germans, 68 per cent of Americans and as many as 91 per cent of Chinese respondents agreeing with the statement “I will take more nature/outdoor trips.“

HARNESSING THE POWER OF CULTURE AND CREATIVITY IN TOURISM RECOVERY Follow up to innovative health and safety protocols released throughout 2020
A
s countries around the world recover from the pandemic, the shared values and close ties between tourism and culture stakeholders means both sectors can work together to ensure inclusive access to heritage. In recognition of this mutually reinforcing relationship, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have collaborated to produce a set of new guidelines focusing on the responsible restart of cultural 14

tourism. UNWTO invited UNESCO to contribute to the UNWTO Inclusive Recovery Guide, Issue
2: Cultural Tourism. This is the second set of guidelines relating to the socio-cultural impacts of COVID-19 issued by UNWTO and will continue to be revised, as the situation evolves. The publication draws on the insights and expertise of the two UN agencies to analyse the impact of the pandemic on their respective sectors. This includes how lost revenues are severely impacting communities, heritage sites, cultural events, spaces and institutions, while also weakening
destinations’ competitiveness and market differentiation. The guidelines on cultural tourism also stress the need for support from policymakers to ensure the relevance of culture in the emergency and contingency planning within tourism destinations. Alongside the new guidelines, UNWTO is urging the cultural tourism sector to create participatory governance structures, bringing together artists, creators, tourism and culture professionals, the private sector and local communities, for an open dialogue, data exchange and real-time solutions. The document also advocates for better urban– rural connections so as to ensure the benefits of both culture and tourism are enjoyed as widely as
The release of the guidelines comes within the context of the International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development 2021 possible. As a result of the pandemic, 90% of countries introduced total or partial closures of their World Heritage sites. In many cases, sites of special signifi-
cance to humanity were closed to the public for the first time in decades. At the same time, the pandemic highlighted the relevance of both tourism and culture. The sudden fall in tourist arrivals has been felt across the globe, while millions of people have turned to virtual cultural experiences for comfort and inspiration. The release of the guidelines comes within the context of the International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development 2021, a UN initiative designed to recognize how different manifestations of culture, including cultural tourism, can contribute to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

All those who took part in a panel discussion on the future of the luxury hotel industry at ITB Berlin NOW agreed the industry would have to react. “Anxiety is a game changer“, said anxiety therapist Jeffrey McCutchan. After the unsettling experience of the coronavirus customers wanted to find places where they felt good and were cared for. Health safety had also become more important and people avoided gatherings. It all pointed to luxury destinations enjoying a secure future.

Fabian Eberle from Chalet Zermatt Peak AG said that in principle his company had no health safety issues. However, taking individual care of premium customers had become more difficult in 2020. Even if most of them arrived by private jet or helicopter, much of the work by hotel services involved organisation management. This type of travel in a comfortable, secure bubble was a good way to protect against the virus, said Jenny Southan, founder of the UK research institute Globetrender. It was feasible for the super-rich, but not for the broad masses. However, once there were vaccinations she did not believe it would be nec-
essary any more. All the same, it highlighted future trends, in hotel architecture for instance, which emphasised smaller units. A longing for individual security stood in stark contrast to a need to be among people, and the industry had to find a middle way between yesterday’s overtourism and the current forced lack of visitors. All in all, it made travelling more complicated for customers and providers alike. Eberle was of the opinion that this shift would affect large hotels focused on a volume market: “They will struggle“, he said.
STRATEGIES FOR THE FUTURE OF MEDICAL TOURISM A greater focus on health
M
edical tourism faces both big challenges and opportunities. At the HTI Roundtable of the ITB Berlin NOW Convention Leila Krešić-Jurić, managing director and partner of the Health Tourism Industry HTI, discussed the latest trends and strategies for sustainable medical tourism with other panel members. Imploring someone to “stay safe“ belongs to the new normal, said Leila Krešić-Jurić. It was therefore all the more important to make it part of a strategy for evolving medical tourism in the future: “The focus is shifting from treatment to prevention.“ Medical providers such as hospitals and clinics that partnered with hotels and tour operators would have to adapt their strategies to the effects of the pandemic in order to offer new medical tourism products and services. In the current circumstances there is particular focus on medical tourism, which has wide-ranging potential. The European Spas Association (ESPA) for instance is working on concepts for treating the effects of long Covid at medical spas and health resorts. New approaches in telemedicine also offer new prospects for medical tourism. During lockdown, patients receiving consultation and treatment via telephone and internet was tested in many places. “In the end it means that less travel can become more travel“, the moderator Krešić-Jurić concluded. The coronavirus had the potential to www.tourismindia.org
boost medical tourism worldwide, he said. Sherif Hassan, CEO and founder of Tripsetc Travel Company, was convinced that – due also to Covid-19 – healthcare offered enormous prospects for tourism. However, concepts had to be reworked. “Wellness hotels need to focus on healthcare, and clinics should give well-being greater attention“, the specialist for internal medicine said. Christian Fadi El-Khouri, managing partner of International Patient Service Deutschland, is worried that many medical tourism providers have a complete lack of customers. Elective treatment and surgery had been postponed or cancelled, as patients were unable to travel. However, he was confident that opening borders would revitalise the market
– and that one could expect high demand. Sandeep Vohra, chief executive, Technology Investments at Roseview Investment & Advisors, added that use of new medical technologies offered great opportunities for tourism. There were numerous promising startups in this field, which gave hope for a genuine revolution in medical tourism. Ivana Kolar, CEO of Julius Rose, was certain that the market could only recover if it took sustainable tourism into account. “Social distancing does not go well with mass tourism products“, the consultant said. Furthermore, many providers were already preparing to help people suffering from the effects of long Covid. “People are ready to invest in their healthcare more than ever.“

V.R.KRISHNA TEJA IAS APPOINTED AS KERALA TOURISM DIRECTOR M r V R Krishna Teja Mylavarapu IAS will be the new Director, Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala. Mr. Teja will assume charge as Director, Tourism, replacing Mr P Bala Kiran IAS, who has been posted as Director of Census Operations/ Director of Citizen Registrations of Andhra Pradesh by the Union Government under the Central Staffing Scheme. Mr. Teja will also continue as Managing Director Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC). Mr. Teja, an IAS officer of 2015 batch, has helmed projects to renovate and effectively market the properties of KTDC, and improve the quality of its hospitality services. It was during his stint as MD, KTDC, that its flagship property Hotel Mascot in the state capital earned the Five Star Status coinciding with its centenary. 20

TRANSFORMING TOURISM: UNWTO GLOBAL STARTUP COMPETITION WINNERS ANNOUNCED Bangalore based Immersion India is the lone winner from India
S
tartups from around the world have been recognized for their unique contributions to sustainable and responsible tourism in the UNWTO SDGs Global Startup Competition. The competition, which was supported by the United Nations Innovation Network, attracted some 10,000 initial proposals. From these, the jury chose 25 winners from 18 countries, highlighting the array of tourism talent in every global region and its widespread ability to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Shortlisted finalists were judged according to criteria which included the potential of the startups to contribute to a specific Goal, their ability to be scaled-up and the maturity of both the product and the team 22

behind it. The 25 winning startups, selected by a jury made up of leaders from across the tourism sector, offer distinct solutions for advancing the SDGs. The Americas led the way in submitting winning proposals, with nine of the competition winners coming from the region. Europe provided eight winners, Asia and the Pacific six, and Africa and the Middle East one winner each. Potential for a better future “The winners show the power of new ideas for transforming our sector”, said UNWTO SecretaryGeneral Zurab Pololikashvili in recognizing tourism’s potential to contribute to all Sustainable Development Goals. He added: “By embracing innovation, we
can realise this potential and build a better future for people and planet through tourism. I congratulate them all and look forward to seeing these startups grow and deliver positive change.” Lisandro Menu-Marque, Director-General of International Business Development for Globalia and Wakalua said: “The take-off of post-Covid tourism is moving closer and closer. The implementation of many of the innovative solutions, which have been brought us entrepreneurs from all over the world, will be part of this. s the sector enters the second year of an unprecedented crisis, the impact this has had on women in tourism has been made clear.

According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the pandemic, and the unprecedented drop in international tourist arrivals, risks rolling back
progress made towards achieving gender equality and efforts to empower women and girls. UNWTO is marking International Women’s Day 2021 with the

release of our Inclusive Recovery Guide for women in tourism, compiled in collaboration with UN Women. UNWTO data shows that women make up the majority of the tourism workforce (54%). Women in tourism are also often concentrated in lowskilled or informal work. This means that they are feeling the economic shock caused by the crisis more acutely and quicker than their male counterparts. In many cases, they are cut off from the social and healthcare protections that are so vital in a global pandemic. Crisis “has a woman’s face” The Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres
says, “As the world marks International Women’s Day in the midst of a global pandemic, one stark fact is clear: the COVID-19 crisis has a woman’s face.” UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili adds, “Tourism is a proven driver of equality and opportunity. This unprecedented crisis has hit our sector’s women fast and hard, which is why gender equality and empowerment must be centre stage as we work together to restart tourist and accelerate recovery.” Recommendations for inclusive recovery Almost one year on since the pandemic was officially declared,
the negative impact it is having on women and girls has become devastatingly clear. This increase in women’s economic and social insecurity combined with the observed rise in unpaid care work and domestic violence have meant that women in tourism have been disproportionately affected by the devastating effects of the pandemic on the sector. The Inclusive Recovery Guide provides recommendations to policymakers, businesses and civil society actors in tourism for designing gender-responsive measures in response to the ongoing pandemic.

TIGHTENED TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS UNDERLINE CURRENT CHALLENGES FOR TOURISM While much has been made in making safe international travel a possibility, we are aware that the crisis is far from over
O
ne in three destinations worldwide are now completely closed to international tourism. According to the latest data from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the emergence of new variants of the COVID-19 virus has prompted many governments to reverse efforts to ease restrictions on travel, with total closures to tourists most prevalent in Asia and the Pacific and Europe. The UNWTO Travel Restrictions Report provides a comprehensive 28

overview of the regulations in place in 217 destinations worldwide. While previous editions had shown a movement towards easing or lifting restrictions on travel, the latest report shows that the persistent seriousness of the epidemiological situation has caused governments to adopt a more cautious approach. As of the beginning of February, 32% of all destinations worldwide (69 in total) are completely closed for international tourism. Of these, around just over half (38 destinations) have been closed for at least
40 weeks. At the same time, 34% of worldwide destinations are now partially closed to international tourists. UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Polilikashvili says: “Travel restrictions have been widely used to restrict the spread of the virus. Now, as we work to restart tourism, we must recognise that restrictions are just one part of the solution. Their use must be based on the latest data and analysis and consistently reviewed so as to allow for the safe and responsi-
ble restart of a sector upon which many millions of businesses and jobs depend.” Regional variations clear The ninth edition of the UNWTO Travel Restrictions Report shows that regional differences with regards to travel restrictions remain. Of the 69 destinations where borders are completely closed to tourists, 30 are in Asia and the Pacific, 15 are in Europe, 11 are in Africa, 10 are in the Americas and three are in the Middle East. At the same time, the UNWTO research also indicates a trend towards adopting a more nuanced, evidence and risk-based approach to implementing travel restrictions. Growing numbers of destinations worldwide now require
international arrivals often combined with quarantine, while the same amount have made tests a secondary or tertiary measure. Top tourism markets remain cautious As UNWTO leads the restart of tourism, the Travel Restrictions Report also notes how different governments are issuing advice to their own citizens. It also changed the way I travelled. Earlier , I was a solo traveller who preferred public transport as my main 36

mode of travel. As physical distancing became the new norm after Corona, I started travelling in my Maruthi Scross. First trip that I made was to Hampi. I chose Hampi because Hampi is a destination frequented more by foreigners. With International travel bans, Hampi was definitely going to be deserted. I was apprehensive of whether I will catch the virus during my travel.

But I had reached my limits with six months of ‘no travel’. Also, I felt being a responsible traveller, I have to contribute to revive the tourism industry which was one of the hardest hit segment. As soon as the interstate borders were opened for tourism in September, I embarked on my first long drive. Eventhough Hampi was 900 kilometers away, I didn’t want to take a break and www.tourismindia.org
resume the journey for I want to avoid contact with people as much as possible. Multiple hotels means I will have to interact with more people. The NHAI Highways were so smooth that I completed my drive in 13 hours. I stayed in a homestay in Sanapur village, 27 kms from Hampi. I didn’t want to stay in a touristy location as I felt the risks were more. I also enjoyed the view of Sanapur lake
nearby. I took an ASI certified guide and explored the ruins of Vijayanagara in detail. With very few local tourists around, I thoroughly enjoyed the solitude presented by Hampi. I covered Virupaksha temple, Hemakuta hills, Krishna temple, Vittala temple and Royal centre. The most exciting thing I did at Hampi was to go in search MARCH 2021 TOURISM INDIA

of kodi Sivalinga or thousand Sivalingas. It is a lesser known ruin of Hampi. Thousand tiny sivalingas are carved on a rock by the riverside. To reach it, I hadto take Kampabhupa trekking path which is an ancient riverside path that connects Virupaksha temple to Vittala temple. Along the path

there are ruins of many other interesting temples like Kodanda rama temple, where coronation of Sugreeva by Rama took place. Fourth day of the travel , I wanted to have some unique experience and I visited the Anegundhi village which is located on other side of river Thungabhadra. On
this part of Hampi, there are some places which the locals connect with Ramayana. Anjaneya temple where Hanuman was born, rishimukh hills where Sugreeva hid from his brother Bali, caves near Durga temple where Bali resided, the pond near which Sabari, a devotee of Rama waited
are just few of the places. I was moved by the women empowerment works that an NGO had undertaken at Anegundhi village. Women were trained in making ropes from dried banana plant skin and stems of water hyacinth. These ropes were then used in making a variety of items ranging from bags and purses to floor mat. I managed to spend few hours with a nomadic shepherd family who had pitched their tent on a hill along the highway. On way back I also visited the Chitradurga Fort. The trip was a good one and after very long time I felt rejuvenated. I also started enjoying solo long drives. I went into quarantine for seven days after reaching home. That was the most painful part of Post Covid travel. Earlier I could have spend more time on road.In Kerala, Post covid travel demanded a good number of days in quarantine once you reach back after an interstate travel. In Novemeber, I set out on my next journey. This time I visited the Toda tribes of Nilgiris. Todas are the indigenous tribes of Nilgiris who have been pastoralist from time immemorial. They rear a peculiar species of semi domesticated Buffaloes with curved horns, huge body and short legs. They lived in valleys surrounded by thick Shola forests. Their half barrel shaped huts made of cane and mud is something very interesting to www.tourismindia.org

Three long drives in a span of three months during covid was indeed a life-changing experience for me. I enjoyed my transformation from a solo budget traveller to a solo road tripper! I enjoyed the freedom that comes when I travel in my own vehicle, the wonderful opportunities presented to me along the way when I drove around the villages. FEATURE /TRAVELOGUE experience. I was also fortunate enough to be invited to a Toda tribal wedding when I was at Ooty. Social wedding takes place when the girl is seven months pregnant. Entire tribe gather at the girls village and celebrate the wedding with great merriment - dance , music and free booze!! I visited the Irula tribes in Kothagiri. Irulas are famed tribal musicians. They showed me their traditional musical instruments. They had also made instruments similar to drum and guitar out of cane.I was taken aback by the courage shown by Lekshmyamma , a 92 year old lady who lived alone in an open hut deep inside forest thronged by wild beasts. I enjoyed the moments spend with the tribals. But I had to take extra hygiene measure to ensure I didn’t carry the virus into the tribal hamlets.

I wanted to end the year 2020 by undertaking a road trip I true sense. The two earlier drives were to a single destination. As I became more confident about solo long drive, I knew I had to push my limits further. I took a weeks break from hospital duty and drove around Karnataka. I started with Coorg. I have always been enthused by the fact that inspite of Kodavas, the natives of Coorgs, being brave warriors, they were ruled for over two hundred years by Lingayath kings of Haleri dynasty. I visited the few monuments that remains of Haleri dynasy like Madikkeri Fort, Raja’s seat, Raja’s tomb, Nalkanadu Mana, Iguthappa temple etc. The most thrilling thing that I did in Coorg was to go in search of a Bhagavathy temple in Haleri village to see the ages old deer horns hanging from its roof. At
Coorg , I stayed at a homestay in Napokulu which was cosily nestled in a coffee eastate. I also managed to get some local contacts and visited the ancient homes of kodavas called ‘ainmane’. It was interesting to learn about culture of Kodava community, which is the only community exempted from needing a gun licence for using fire arms!And kodava cuisine is a unique experience with a diverse range of food items prepared from rice. Their pork curry called panthi curry is prepared by cooking pork in a fermented distillate of a local fruit and is something not to be missed when in Coorg. From Coorg I moved to Belur. I didn’t want to travel along the conventional highway. So I took state highways. The scenic drive through Bisle ghat was an unforgettable experience. I stopped at
many villages on the way to enjoy their rustic lifestyle. After exploring Sakleshpur fort, I visited the famed Hoysala temples and Belur and Halebidu.I also visited the Belavadi temple build by Hoysala. This temple houses the most beautiful Krishna idol as certified by ASI is situated in this temple. On equinox day every year, the rays of sun passes through seven doors in the temple and fall on the main idol. Temple is small when compared to the ones in Belur and Halebidu. But the gopuras of this temple are the tallest amongst all the Hoysala temple gopuras. I spend the night at KTDC mayura, as there was no home stay option and only Mayura offered car parking. That’s one disadvantage of taking your car. You need to find a safe place for your vehicle as well ! On the way to Shravanabelagola , I visited the Dodagadavally Lekshmi temple a ‘one of its kind’ temple. This is considered to be oldest Hoysala monument that has been found intact and is unique because of its Chathushkuda arrangement that is four sub temples are placed on a common base and open into a common hall. This is the only chathushkuta temple. There are other things too that makes this temple an interesting place. One can see skelton structures inside the temple which are supposed to be Vethalas guarding bhadrakali. I had never seen fierce looking skeltons exhibiting their nakedness in another temple and that too, they were more than 8 feet in height. Among the two diametrically opposite temples, one set is Vishnu and Bhadrakali and the Other is Lekshmi and Siva.This temple deviates from the general temple norms - Vaishnava idol opposite another Vaishnava and instead a Saivite idol is placed opposite to Vaishnavite idol. conch, rosary beads , gadha and chakra which is an unsual posi43 tion. At Shravanabelagola,I enjoyed the sunset more than the tallest monolithic statue. It is believed to be one amongst the most beautiful sunset that can be witnessed in Karnataka. After sunset, I proceeded to Melukote which is 35 kms away. Next day, I explored Melukote , a village with many specialities. It is the place where Ramanuja,a vedic scholar spend nearly 13 years. Melukote was
a main Sanskrit learning centres centuries back itself. Surprisingly one finds that time machine stopped working years back in this village.The entire activity of villagers revolve around Cheluvanarayana Swamy temple. Day begins with reciting vedas in front of lord, and participating in various poojas through out the day. People still follow age old customs and dress up ancient style. Kids learn vedas through gurukula method. They stay with guru at his house and recite Vedas from MARCH 2021 TOURISM INDIA

dawn to dusk. Yoga Narasimha temple perched on the top of a tall hill is another monument which is not to be missed. What moved me the most in Melukote was the fact that villagers took great efforts to maintain 108 ponds spread across the village. As a

result, even though the village is located at a higher altitude , there is round the clock water supply in every home. Amongst the ponds, the chief pond named Kalyani is one of the most beautiful ponds with turquoise water.I felt so much in love with the village that
I decided to stay there for three days and relax. I also managed to visit temples at Thonnur , a nearby village. One of the temples here , has a box in which the bag used by Ramanuja is preserved! I winded my journey at Melukote and returned to Cochin. Three long drives in a span of three months during covid was indeed a life changing experience for me. I enjoyed my transformation from a solo budget traveller to solo road tripper! I enjoyed the freedom that comes when I travel in my own vehicle, the wonderful oppurtunities presented to me along the way when I drove around the villages.
