Resource efficiency, conservation and new technologies for a Substainable Future Tourism today is one of the largest and fastest-growing economic sectors in the world. It contributes 9 per cent to global GDP, accounts for one in 11 jobs worldwide, and for 6 per cent of global exports. By 2030, UNWTO forecasts that there will be 1.8 billion international tourism arrivals annually. If not sustainably managed however, tourism can deplete natural resources leading to water shortages, loss of biodiversity, land degradation and contribute to climate change and pollution, among other impacts. Tourism’s contribution to global warming is estimated at 5 per cent of global CO2 emissions. UNEP’s 2011 Green Economy Report reveals that under a ‘business-asusual’ scenario, projected tourism growth rates to 2050 will result in increases in energy consumption by 154 per cent, greenhouse gas emissions by 131 per cent, water consumption by 152 per cent, and solid waste disposal by 251 per cent. “As tourism continues to grow, so too will the pressures on the environment and wildlife. Without proper management and protection, as well as investments in greening the sector, ecosystems and thousands of magnificent species will suffer,” said UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner. “Tourism has been identified by UNEP as one of the ten economic sectors best able to contribute to the transition to a sustainable and inclusive green economy. This important initiative is about steering the industry onto a truly sustainable path -- one that echoes to the challenge of our time: namely the fostering of a global Green Economy that thrives on the interest, rather than the capital, of our economically important nature-based assets.” he added. As the most visited tourism destination in the world, France highly values the preservation of its rich culture and natural heritage. This is fundamental to maintain the quality of a destination which receives 85 million tourists a year. The global situation and discussion regarding the sustainable development of Tourism is an eye opener for our country also. Authorities in power and Tourism industry stake holders must act without any delay to up keep and protect our Nations rich natural and cultural heritage. Without this priced possession, we can’t survive for long. Tourism is an activity which purely depends on sustainable development. Act today for better tomorrow. Ravisankar K.V. Editor

The revenues generated from these fees - which in Palau’s case is US$1.3 million annually since 2009 - are used to support conservation and sustainable human development. potential of new areas like medical tourism and also promote domestic tourism among the youth, he added. Expressing concern over the bottle necks especially in the area of international tourism, the Union Minister said that providing adequate infrastructure, security and use of technology will be the focus over the next three months. He said that India has world class doctors and we should take advantage of this talent pool to promote medical tourism. hree new Responsible Tourism films premiered at World Travel Market, London The United Nations global tourism body has put its weight behind Kerala by launching the three new short films showcasing the life-changing experiences under the state’s Responsible Tourism initiative at the world’s biggest travel and tourism trade event. United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Secretary General Mr Taleb Rifai launched the three films produced by Kerala Tourism at the World Travel Market (WTM) in London on November 5. Mr. A P Anil Kumar, Kerala Tourism Minister and Mr. Suman Billa IAS, Tourism Secretary were present on the occasion. Introducing the films at a special session of the WTM, the UNWTO Secretary General said that Kerala has placed Responsible Tourism at the core of tourism development since 2007 and is indeed an inspiration for the country. “Kerala has transferred the power of tourism into a force that improves livelihood, projects nature and builds bridges between cultures”, he added. Directed by the reputed filmmaker Anwar Rasheed, the minute-long films depict how the Responsible Tourism initiative, 14
which links the local community with the hospitality industry, is helping to empower the people and improve their lives while conserving nature. The films conceived by Stark Communications and produced by the Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies, the nodal agency for Responsible Tourism in the state, were premiered in the presence of more than 400 invitees, representing the Who’s Who of travel and trade industry in the world. “It is a proud moment for Kerala,” said Mr. Anil Kumar, who spoke at the premiere hosted by WTM Show Director Mr Simon Press. “The films show the world how our model of sustainable tourism is generating more employment opportunities in our villages,” he added. In January this year, Kerala Tourism had won the UNWTO’s coveted Ullysses Prize for excellence in pioneering global sustainable tourism models for its Responsible Tourism project in Kumarakom. It was the first time an Indian tourism board had won the prestigious prize. “The Responsible Tourism model has touched our state and our people in many ways,” said Mr. Anil Kumar. “Along with enriching the lives of our people and generating jobs for them, it
has succeeded in safeguarding local ethos and cultural heritage, rejuvenating traditional farming methods and preserving natural resources,” he said. Inspired by true events, the films show how the lives ordinary people have been transformed by the Responsible Tourism initiative. ‘Guide’ is the story of a shy village student who finds the confidence to become a tourist guide and interact easily with travellers from around the world. ‘Farmer’, shows how a cultivator in a remote village preserves many varieties of organic seeds turning his farm into a destination for visitors. In ‘Chefs’, the third film, a group of homemakers turn themselves into successful entrepreneurs and culinary experts admired by tourists. “When the world comes to Kerala, new worlds open up,” say the voice-over in the films, which also portray how the sustainable tourism model practiced by the state enriches and enhances the experience of the visitors. “Our experience in practising Responsible Tourism is an eye opener for other tourism destinations across the world,” said Mr. Billa, referring to the launch of the films by UNWTO. “These films, inspired by true stories will motivate others to follow Responsible Tourism for growth
and development while practising environment-friendly tourism,” he added. The three films, which highlight the Responsible Tourism slogan ‘Better Together’, were shot in the picturesque villages around Kumarakom, Wayanad and Alappuzha. “The films will certainly help evoke pride among the people of our state leading to further awareness and increased openness towards tourism initiatives,” said Mr. P I Sheikh Pareeth IAS, Kerala Tourism Director. The campaign will be launched in India on various television channels, cinema theatres and Kerala Tourism’s social media channels. The films, produced to create awareness and pride about the
Responsible Tourism initiatives in the State, is a landmark campaign by Kerala Tourism after its hugely successful ‘Your Moment Is Waiting’ three-minute film, which was premiered, also in London, in 2010 at a similar high profile event attended by film star Mohanlal, among other global celebrities. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between The International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT) and Kerala Tourism during this event. As part of this MoU, Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies (KITTS) will work as ICRT Kerala in the world responsible tourism domain. KITTS is the nodal agency for the Responsible Tourism activities in Kerala. ICRT is an independent organisa-
tion that works with governments, tour operators and accommodation providers to realise the aspirations of the Responsible Tourism movement. The World Travel Market, held from November 3 to 6 in London, was attended by over 5,000 exhibitors from around the world. The event, which included a series of networking sessions, business meetings and talks, is attended over about 3,000 travel journalists and writers. Kerala Tourism is a regular participant at the WTM, London with its themed stall drawing a large number of industry representatives. Kerala Tourism had received the Lonely Planet Award for the Top Ten Destinations to go with the family in 2014, at the WTM in its 2013 edition.

ommuters on the new Mumbai Metro can now experience the flavour of ‘God’s Own Country’with a ‘Kerala Green Express’ running on the network under a branding agreement with the state tourism department. Kerala has become the first destination in the country to be associated with the newlylaunched Mumbai Metro network. The ‘Kerala Green Express’ began running on the Mumbai Metro’s Versova-Ghatkopar corridor from November 3 and will do so for the next three months. All the four coaches of the train will have images showing Kerala’s
beautiful landscapes and greenery on the outside and inside. The Mumbai Metro carries more than six lakh passengers every day. The ‘Kerala Green Express’ will travel a stretch of 11.07 km, passing through 12 elevated station on the Versova-Ghatkopar line. The entire journey between Versova and Ghatkopar takes 21 minutes to complete, with a train running every 3.5 minutes. All the coaches are air-conditioned, offering a comfortable travelling experience. “We are proud to be associated with Mumbai's brand new metro network,” said Mr. A P Anil Kumar,
Minister for Tourism, Kerala. “We are also privileged to be the first destination in India to promote tourism through the new metro in the country’s commercial capital,” Mr. Anil Kumar added. Kerala Tourism had earlier promoted its destinations on several iconic establishments like the famous London taxis and they had earlier done a campaign promotion wrapping Rajdhani train– the longest distance running train in India with Kerala images. “With a mammoth number of people using the Mumbai metro every day, our association with the network will bring us close to the residents and visitors of the cosmopolitan city,” said Mr. Suman Billa IAS, Secretary of Tourism, Kerala. The branding in green colour includes wall panels and wall strips carrying messages such as ‘One of the 10 Paradises of the World’, a reference to the accolade bestowed on Kerala by the National Geographic Traveller. “It is a prestigious association for us because the Mumbai Metro is fast emerging as an iconic feature of Mumbai,” said Mr. P I Sheikh Pareeth IAS, Director of Kerala Tourism. The Mumbai Metro was launched in June this year. November 2014

he Great India Tuk-Tuk Challenge was recently organized by Raj Hospitality Services and Hotel La Classic Bengaluru. It was a group of 12 Tuk-Tuks, UK Nationalities on their way from Chennai to Goa on 03rd November 2014. Mr. Raja Gopal Iyer, CEO, Raj Hospitality Services flagged off the driving challenge to Goa on 4th November 2014. The Indian Autorickshaw Challenge (also known as Rickshaw Challenge) is an international autorickshaw rally selfstyled as ‘an amazing race for the clinically insane’. The entrants use the ubiquitous Autorickshaw or Tuk-Tuk, workhorse of the urban east, to cross large portions of the Indian sub-continent in a matter of days. The simplicity of the Autorickshaw and the diversity of the landscape require ingenuity and heroic spirits from its participants. The Rickshaw Challenge currently has four distinct events. The most popular of them are the Classic Run and the Mumbai
24
Xpress. Each of these two rallies is designed as an escapade to test the entrant’s levels of endurance and perseverance, as well as for humanitarian projects, but is essentially not geared towards racing or competition, maintaining the spirit of the amateur adventurer. This is the shorter and lower impact of the two events, spanning roughly 1000 kilometres, across 12 districts and one Union territory. The daily stretches can be up to 200 kilometres long, and can be strewn with significant natural and human obstacles, ranging from densely packed urban sprawl to monsoon rains to uncooperative cows on the roadways. The route is within the southern Indian prov-
ince of Tamil Nadu, and extends down the southern coast of India between the start lines in Besant Nagar Beach, Chennai to the checkered flag in Kanyakumari at the sub-continent’s southern tip. The championship itself is
composed of a series of activities along the route designed to challenge physical and mental agility, with points being awarded for their completion in addition to completing that day’s particular route.

The uncertainty over continuation of North East Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIPP) 2007 is to hit the growth of tourism industry in North East. Suspension of incentives available under NEIIPP will not only adversely impact industrial growth of North East but it will also amount to a major setback to integrating North East into the mainstream national economy. NEIIPP was introduced by the Government of India in April 2007. The policy provides a special package of fiscal incentives, subsidies and other concessions, with the objective of promoting industrialization of North East. personnel, including those in the international carriers that operate to Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, have already been briefed about the e-visa facility being introduced, the official said. A high-level team led by Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO), Delhi, I.B. Rani was in the airports to inspect the facilities two months ago. In addition to 16 counters in the immigration wing for general visitors, four Tourist Visa-onArrival (T-VoA) counters have been set up in Thiruvananthapuram. E-visa can be obtained through designated websites and does
not require a visa stamped in the passport prior to arrival in another country. The e-visa will be issued within 96 hours after applying. The other formalities will have to be completed on landing at the designated nine airports. The validity of e-visa to be issued is one month; sources said Kerala is to be benefited as it is the only State where two airports have the T-VoA and e-visa facility. The timing of launching the e-visa is also favorable for the State as the peak tourist season has commenced. Kerala has started aggressively marketing the T-VoA.

ake in the wonders of Jamaica; but first- take a selfie! Jamaica’s natural beauty, heritage and unusual locales are so intriguing and special; you’ll feel obliged to share them with the world. As you enjoy the simple pleasures of the little island, snap a selfie or two so you’ll never forget those special moments you’ll most likely cherish forever. Here are a few suggestions for interesting photo ops: Blue Mountain Peak: The 4 hour trek up 7,402 feet, the highest point on the island, warrants a celebratory selfie! You champi42
oned the cold, fog and countless encounters with strange bugs and now the world deserves to know. In fact if you really want to make a statement begin your journey before 2am to catch the glorious sunrise for an even more astounding backdrop for your selfie. After this your selfie game is sure to peak! Cliff at Sunset: When the sun sets in Negril it’s an event. Everyone gathers by the cliff side to be awed by the transitioning sky as night falls. The spectacle is so stunning it is common practice of
onlookers to clap Mother Nature for her artistry. You’ll never see another sunset quite like those from the cliffs of Negril so act fast and take a quick selfie with the fiery sky, then enjoy the view before it’s all over. On the beach with coconut jelly: Nothing says vacationing in Jamaica quite like sipping on a coconut jelly while lounging on the beach. When you take your selfie, don’t leave the coconut out of the shot- it’s guaranteed more likes! Oh and the hashtag “island life” (#islandlife), can’t forget
that either! Pelican Bar: How often do you get to have a drink from a bar in the middle of the ocean? The Pelican Bar is one of the most unique bars in Jamaica and the world by extension, located just a quarter of a mile out at sea from Treasure Beach (St. Elizabeth). Either stand on the inside right by the Pelican Bar sign or on the makeshift boardwalk at a little
distance from the actual structure, to get a shot of the bar in the background; now that’s a cool selfie. Under Water: With all the waterproof gadgets available in the market today, it’s so easy to capture your underwater adventures. The deep sea beyond Jamaica’s shore is home to brilliant tropical marine life from exotic species of fish to spectacular coral reefs. Imagine a selfie amidst damsel or parrot fishes shuffling past the reefs. Maybe, if you’re lucky a turtle will photo bomb your selfie! Waterfalls: Jamaica happens to be blessed with a handful of waterfalls, all equally charming. Crystal water cascading down layers of rocks surrounded by an enchanting rainforest; yes, definitely a selfie worthy moment! River Rafting: You’ll be so re-
laxed while rafting downstream, you will almost forget about your phone (or camera) until the beauty of the lush green trees and colourful flora overwhelms you to the point where you feel compelled to capture the moment. That’s the opportune time for the selfie! Bob Marley Museum Statue: When you’re in the presence of a legend, it’s a nice time for a selfie - even if it’s a statue. Satisfy your soul with an iconic addition to your selfie collection. It’s a great way to show off your impressive taste in music.

he WTM Global Trends Report 2014, in association with Euromonitor International reveals Online and mobile bookings for India’s rail network represent a strong driver for travel and tourism which is a vital component for the countries overall growth. The Indian Railways Company (IRCTC) website is now capable of taking online bookings, as can online travel agents (OTAs) such as Yatra, Cleartrip and MakeMyTrip. The online rail booking in India has been increased by 300% between March 2013 and March 2014. Mobile is also an increasingly important channel for rail bookings. Mobile internet subscriptions reached 72 million in 46
2013, more than 70% of total internet subscriptions in the country. The IRCTC site allows bookings via SMS messaging for people who have connected their mobile phone number to their bank account. And offline travel agents are also seeing the benefits as they can book tickets for people without internet access. However, many foreign travellers in India prefer to book their online train tickets through OTAs as IRCTC only accepts American Express credit cards from international tourists. The WTM Global Trends
Report 2014 points out that the IRCTC’s focus on digital bookings is part of its overall plan to improve the network, including the development of six high-speed routes linking major cities in an effort to compete with the country’s rapidly expanding low-cost airlines. Mr. Sadanand Gowda, Indian Minister of Railways, said “IRCTC is expanding the scope of online booking for people to book additional services. The need of the hour is to bring in a total change in the work culture and delivery of railway services by investing in large-scale integrated computerisation of major functions of Indian Railways.”

experience the city’s famous summer beer gardens (Biergartens), but come the colder months, the beer guzzling moves indoors to an array of atmospheric beer cellars (Bierkellers). The sizable Hofbrauehaus is a popular option, as are the Augustiner Keller and the Loewenbraue. Don’t miss out on the winter foods, either – local fruitcake Stolln is best accompanied by a glass of mulled wine. Flavours of Munich: Munich, with its air of polished prosperity, is quintessential Germany. The old and the new co-exist here with cherished traditions like Oktoberfest, the world’s largest beer festival, rubbing shoulders with designer shopping, sleek cars and high-powered industry. Indeed Munich today is the flavour of the year. The Bavarian capital on the Isar River has strong roots in the past. Its Baroque and Rococo architecture, lush parks, museums and historic venues such as Schloss Nymphenburg, the summer palace of the rulers of Bavaria, are the favored haunts of tourists and locals alike.
