Philosophy of Tourism and its inner self

As a synonym for frivolity leisure activities are considered as the things we do when we don’t have anything useful to do. The concept is mostly anything done slowly, ploddingly or inefficiently is described as doing it in a leisurely manner. While definition of leisure (Oxford English Dictionary), “the freedom or opportunity to do something specified or implied,” should alert us that leisure is extraordinarily important. “Something specified or implied” can be any action whatever. This definition puts the word Leisure to a higher degree of generality which remind us that leisure is a fundamental of action. Aristotle’s view was that Leisure is the first principle of all actions. According to him “We are busy just because we have Leisure and conceptualised leisure is the goal of busy-ness, of what we call labor.” Aristotle is a philosopher with the view that leisure is a fundamental human value and leisure is time available for action. The unfortunate definition of leisure as time off work is like defining money as a commodity which can be exchanged for useless luxuries. We can grasp the full significance of leisure only when we recognise it as a time to devote the mental and physical powers to an action for a period of time, like to devote life to that action for that time. Formally, leisure is an individual human life as measured by time and informally leisure is the time of life. Since life is a value, Leisure also has a value and leisure is life itself. Many people find leisure expression in work or in functional, goal-directed activities, often looked upon in our early history as work, while others now work at what was actually play. The growth of technology, communications, transportation and mobility has increased satisfaction of the lower echelon needs. As neophiliac animals, people always seek to challenge the ability and are tempted to test their abilities once their basic needs are met. Since 1955, the economic growth coupled with political freedom and choice of life

styles has provided the setting for the development of the modern concept of leisure. According to the modern concept leisure, which is not mere time, is a state of being in which the individual has to do things, mostly on self-actualization and is engaged in the recognition of one’s responsibilities and relationships to one’s fellow being. Our concepts of leisure have been far too narrow. Between 1890 and 1930, providing leisure services means planning of organized and structured activities. We have learned to believe that leisure means some identifiable activity like music, art, dance and drama in an organized behavior is needed to be in a leisure state. We have compartmentalised the personal expression and self-actualization in separate boxes. Leisure state is personal, intrinsic, and an individual happening; the satisfaction level attained by one must discover for oneself in which situations these state of mind occur. It is truly a unique task to provide worthwhile leisure opportunities for the masses of our population not just today but in future also. Sometimes we have to face more complex conditions than previous civilizations, but we have more resources to deal with the socio-economic variables that condition our use of leisure. Many researches provide helpful information to clarify objectives and to formulate basic concepts of leisure and how to collaborate it with the term ‘Tourism’, which is relatively modern in origin. It is distinguishable by its mass character from the travel undertaken in the past. Tourism Industry players should have basic knowledge of this behavior and should have clear notes to predict about it for the future as it is crucial before the decisions of leisure choices and opportunities and its type, location and character are taken. The event is organized by Jellyfish Water Sports, Calicut with the support of Kerrala Tourism department and and Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society

C

haliyar River Paddle’ ,threeday paddling event by Jellyfish Water Sports and supported by Kerala Tourism will be held from September 20th to September 22nd, 2019.The event targets water sports enthusiasts, nature lovers, tourists, children and people from all walks of life. Promoting water sports like kayaking, SUPing, and canoeing will help build the connection, turning more and more youngsters and tourists into evangelists of clean waters.

September 2019 Tourism India

“Chaliyar River Paddle has been focused on saving our rivers from urban pollution and promote recreational kayaking for everyone. Recently Kerala State has witnessed repetitive flooding and most people aren’t very familiar with minimum safety precautions when it comes to water, so we aim to introduce more people to paddle in our rivers. Their connection to the rivers will help spread awareness about clean waters and solve many issues”, says Kaushiq Kodithodika, Founder, Jelly-

fish Water Sports. The event starts at Nilambur, located on the foothills of Western Ghats with close proximity to Nilgiris. The ending point is at Beypore in Kozhikode district, where the river meets with the Arabian Sea. The Chaliyar River Paddle has something for everyone. From beginners to non-swimmers to well-established water sports enthusiasts. Not just that, from 10 yrs to 70 yrs, it’s open for all. For those on the water for the first

time, kayak lessons will be offered on the first day to prepare you for the adventure. Stand-up paddlers are also invited to join our Standup paddling troop. Apart from the exciting journey on the water, the campsite will be a perfect place to unwind and bond with fellow paddlers. Apart from camping, bonfires and team activities, participants get a peek into the culture through authentic Kerala delicacies and local tribal music. While people love exploring water bodies, what’s missing is sensitivity towards sustainable travel. From superficial love to building real connection, from worshipping them to respecting them so as to curb domestic and industrial pollution, bringing about this change in everyone’s mindset is the motto. Water adventure sports like rafting take place in hill stations, only where water is fresh but as we come towards the plain-land, rivers are reduced to a drain as they are used more for commercial than recreational purposes. From a highly polluted, cancer-inducing river, Chaliyar is now one of the most beautiful, serene rivers in Kerala. It has bounced back, by giving new life to the flora and fauna, all thanks to the Chaliyar Action Committee who fought for the cause of the river with the support of local villagers, to shut down a factory, the real culprit behind all the pollution. This movement should continue since it’s not just about helping rivers and backwaters in Kerala, but to make a difference to all water bodies across the country which are in dire need for conservation. here are numerous women working in the travel and tourism industry in India, but sadly, there are very few at the helm of the pyramid. However, with the growing trend of ‘women only tours’ we have witnessed a growing number of female leaders in travel as well. In a heart-to-heart talk with three dynamic, ambitious and inspiring women entrepreneurs in Bangalore, Ranjini Nambiar, CEO, Footloose Yatra, Loveleen Multani Arun, Founder Director, Panache World and Mildred NoronhaSmith, proprietor, All About Travel, Tourism India finds out what drives these amazing women and their companies. Being a woman entrepreneur in Bangalore’s travel trade, what are the challenges you faced getting established and are there any advantages you enjoy over your male counterparts? Ranjini Nambiar: Tourism is a diverse industry that is open to new innovations and practices to cater

to versatile demands of tourists from both domestic and international market. Women play a very important role, especially in the hospitality and tourism industry. Right from early years of this industry we have seen larger numbers of women employees; by the millennium we had seen them actively involving in business and entrepreneurship. Challenges are stepping stones to success. Fortunately, we launched at the time when the IT Industry was at its peak & MICE & Customized Vacation being our focus, we managed to mark our stamp in the market. On the bright side, being a women centric organisation, clients are generally not overtly pushy or demanding, when it comes to planning or negotiating their holiday itinerary. Loveleen Multani Arun: I started my company about 18 years ago and Bangalore has been a wonderful place to set up a company and work in. Colleagues, suppliers, employees, clients and the whole eco-system have been very supportive and it has been a great journey. The challenges that I faced initially are common to any travel company that wants to establish itself and did not particularly have anything to do with me being a woman. It is not always a man’s world and success is not gender specific. Similarly, you only have an advantage over any other colleagues if you are a hard-worker and a diligent professional. The advantage I had in particular was that I had a very encouraging at-

mosphere at home. My husband, my mother-in-law and later my daughter were always proud of my work and my success. Mildred Noronha-Smith: Entrepreneurship is a challenge for anyone. My years of being in the travel trade before I decided to venture out on my own helped me substantially. In fact, being a woman aided

in the start-up process as I was able to get permissions and tie-ups done almost immediately and dive into the thick of business from the word ‘Go’. Often, being a woman in the business of tourism is an asset, as you are able to stand out among the crowd. Has the increasing number of women-only tours in India been September 2019 Tourism India

ROUND TABLE responsible for more women entrepreneurs entering the tourism sector? Ranjini Nambiar: The ‘Women only Tours’ trend started around the beginning of the millennium, when the IT Industry boom gave way to several independent thinking solo travellers. With the increasing amount of disposable time and income, travel now is not a status symbol, but a necessity. Women intrinsically adapt at multi-tasking and were quick to identify a great career option in the tourism indus-

try, where one has the flexibility of work timings, high income and the added benefit of luxury travel. Loveleen Multani Arun: Yes, I agree that women-only tours in India augmented women entrepreneurs in the trade as women professionals understand why women want to travel in closed groups and what they are seeking out of their adventures. This helps them design better and more apt itineraries for women. A few companies have been pioneers in this field and they have opened the avenues for

many women to travel and seek new frontiers. They should be given their due respect. However, I hear of many bloggers or avid travellers turning entrepreneurs in this field. This is both good and bad. It is great if the person in question has done her diligent homework and handles the clients professionally. A badly managed trip can give the whole industry a bad name as anyone can turn into a “travel organiser” these days. Mildred Noronha-Smith: Yes, with the advent of women solo travel and group travel tours, a lot more women have entered this segment of the travel trade. Women are inclined to support women; it results in a chain of benefits. Women love to travel in all-women groups and are comfortable with a woman curating such a trip. Truth is a woman can understand the typical woman psychology and needs and address them more effectively. In a highly competitive environment, how have you carved a niche for yourself and your company? Ranjini Nambiar: The opportunities of entrepreneurship in the tourism industry are unlimited. Clients change their travel patterns frequently in a highly competitive market, Online travel portals start a price war and various types of tourist demands opens the arena of business opportunities. Being a lady with a creative mind has always been that dimension of my persona that encourages me to undertake or practice something new. With the arrival of the millen-

nial generation, our SME marketing has been in the forefront, ensuring that we are at the ‘right place at the right time’. Loveleen Multani Arun: As a sustained effort, Panache World has always tried to stay just a little bit ahead of the curve. We have not been afraid or learning, unlearning and quickly re-inventing ourselves when the market conditions have demanded it. We changed from domestic to outbound to outbound luxury holidays very early on. We also educated ourselves on the global trends sooner than the others and therefore were delivering ‘experiences’ while travelling as long as five years back. We are proud to say that 95% of our clients are repeats or references and that itself is a very enviable niche we are in. Mildred Noronha-Smith: Networking is the key to good accounts, but in this highly competitive environment, the only way to distinguish

your company from competition is to give personal attention to every case. This of course takes a lot more time but ultimately brings great results with repeat clientele and referral business. Being a woman, how do you manage to strike a work-life balance? Ranjini Nambiar: Having a support system is important for a woman entrepreneur. Hence, taking short family holidays and setting a time frame regarding the work hours will create a balance between the two. Being best at multi-tasking and an avid foodie, who loves to cook, made my daily chores at home simpler. Allotting time for my hobbies and passion, kept my work pressure under check. I have always believed in my favorite quote by Edmund Lee, ‘Surround yourself with the dreamers, doers, believers and thinkers, but most of all, surround yourself with those who see greatness within you, even when you don’t see it yourself. This has

stood be in good stead.” Loveleen Multani Arun: As clichéd as it may sound, my work is my life and my life is my work. I completely enjoy designing itineraries for my clients. So much that sometimes I do that for relaxation on Sundays. I travel for work and I enjoy it. I go on family holidays and that is also work in a way. I don’t stress about work in a way where I need to demarcate leisure and work time. At Panache World, we have always chosen quality work over quantity of work. That leaves me with a lot of creative bandwidth and I am a happier person this way. I am able to give quality attention to my family, friends and loved ones. Mildred Noronha-Smith: Women are great at multi-tasking; we can do 10 things at one time. In this business you have to keep up with various time zones, but taking work home is more of an exception than a rule. Also, technology has made it easier to juggle work and home

tihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, is preparing to celebrate 15 years of service to its largest and busiest market, India. September 2004, within the airline’s first year of operation. Three months later, flights were also launched between Abu Dhabi and New Delhi. As of now, Etihad operates 159 return flights per week between Abu Dhabi and 10 key Indian gateways Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Cochin, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram - and through its Abu Dhabi hub, the airline connects each of these gateways to international destinations throughout the Middle East, Europe, the Americas, and Africa. Since launching operations to the sub-continent, Etihad has carried more than 16.5 million passen-

gers on its Indian routes. Mr. Tony Douglas, Group CEO of Etihad Airways said: “India and the United Arab Emirates share a long and strong economic, cultural and diplomatic relationship, and Etihad Airways connects these nations to each other, and beyond. We serve more destinations in India than any other country in our network, and connect India to the world via Abu Dhabi. Globally, we employ more than 4,800 Indian nationals, almost 25 per cent of our workforce. We contribute strongly to both economies, and last year spent US $151 million with 480 companies in India. Our commitment is significant, and will continue to grow.”

Etihad’s offering in the India market continues to evolve. The airline is continually increasing flights and adding newer, larger aircraft, including its latest addition, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which serves cities including Mumbai, Delhi, and Hyderabad. Etihad Guest, the airline’s loyalty programme, recently partnered with SBI Card, one of India’s largest credit card providers, to offer a unique travel-specific Visa credit card to Indian travellers. And for guests flying Etihad from India to the United States, the Customs and Border Protection facility at Abu Dhabi Airport, enables US immigration, customs and agriculture formalities to be completed in Abu Dhabi before departure. India is an important strategic source market for Etihad Cargo. In addition to belly space cargo capacity on the 159 weekly passenger aircraft between Abu Dhabi and India, Etihad Cargo operate dedicated

freighter flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai. In the past decade, Etihad has carried more than 560,000 tonnes of cargo to and from India, from general cargo to key Indian exports including garments, perishable products, pharmaceuticals and electronics. Etihad also continues to support

India through a range of corporate social responsibility initiatives, including its Global Education Project to provide or raise funds for new education facilities and supplies. The airline also runs workshops to develop skills and support the empowerment of women, and provides aid to assist after natural disasters such as floods in Kerala, where it provided fresh water, clothes, blankets, kitchen utensils and hygiene kits to more than 1,000 people located at a relief camp in the state. As a minority shareholder in and key partner of Jet Airways, Etihad was able to improve international connectivity with India, via Abu Dhabi. Even after Jet’s flights were suspended earlier this year, Etihad worked consistently and constructively to help revive the Indian carrier, and continues to explore opportunities to collaborate with other local partners to help serve this rapidly-expanding market.

T

here’s an old saying in Jordan: “Even when you’re full, you can still always eat 40 more bites of food.” Food is a very important aspect of Jordanian culture and is held as a community event with immediate and extended family present. In addition, food is commonly used by Jordanians to express their hospitality and generosity, food is served with great pride irrespective of how modest their means may be. and quite festive at the same time. Each festivity is marked with dishes, spread out and served to the guests. Here is a list of our suggestions of the food items that one should not miss when in Jordan: Mezze Platter: Mezze is a Persian word which means “to taste”. As the name indicates, you get to ‘taste’ a variety of food in a platter. The highlights of which are: Falafel (a combination of ground chickpeas, mixed with a variety of spices, then deep fried into a mini patties); Hummus (cooked, mashed chickpeas, blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic); Labneh (thick, sour and creamy yoghurt dip); and other meat kebabs. Limonana: Also known as Frozen Mint Lemonade, Limonana is a popular summer drink of Jordan, made from freshly-squeezed lemon, spearmint leaves and ice. Although it’s super simple to make, there is a trick to it; the key to the perfect Limonana is in the ratio of lemon to sugar to water. Mansaf: The traditional Jordanian dish- Mansaf, is made of lamb cooked in a sauce of fermented dried yogurt and served with rice or bulgur.

Manakish: Manakish, a popular food in Jordan consists of rolled dough topped with thyme, cheese, or ground meat and is similar to a pizza.

Kanafeh: Kanafeh is a traditional dessert made with thin noodle-like pastry, or alternatively fine semolina dough, soaked in sweet, sugar-based syrup, and typically layered with goeey melted cheese-- the combination of sweet and salty makes it a treat to remember. Arabic coffee – Al-Qahwa- “Al-Qahwa”, is made from coffee beans roasted and then flavoured with cardamom, which makes this traditional beverage an all-time favourite in Jordan. It is often served with dates or candied fruit.
