lobally, in the hospitality markets in which there has been an improvement in transactions, soft brands are picking up slowly and at the same time the changing relationship between owners and operators with a stronger alignment on profit metrics rather than only revenue markers and the importance shifts to the focus on flow through and profit contribution. The prediction of the recovery is difficult since the course of recovery will be different for different segments and markets and submarkets. Since the corporate travel is dependent on commercial business activity its pace of recovery is far more uncertain It is expected that the recovery is to take place first in the organised sector while consumer sentiment reflects a preference for brands, and it has seen more interest in the development and re-branding of the upscale category which is expected faster recovery than the luxury segment. The wedding group market which has seen high before will slow down but the chances for micro trips will dominate in the coming days .the smaller group travel have a better chance to resume. The unexplored destinations have always been the attraction and will continue to show a steady increase in 2021. Even though the Traveller & guest preferences have changed significantly in the last year, with hygiene, cleanliness, safety, and privacy becoming their

top priorities. Travellers will prefer independent, contained, and smaller spaces, for their travel. In this new normal Technology adoption for hotels will be at a much faster pace than the pre covid days by the sector. The COVID period was a chance for the industry players to think and act creatively upon their products and innovations. The industry should be now built upon all those product categories that were experimented with during the pandemic between 2020 and 2021. When it comes to resilience, the industry will always find ways to be innovative and it always adapts. The Industry is taking all the possible steps to get out of these present challenges and overcome the crisis it is equally important to remember customers remain the key to this process. It is the extremely 5 crucial pace for brands to continuously upskill themselves and be ready to meet the demands of the industry and to match the pace of the changes taking place around.. The adaptation of the changes and keep them forward and move hand in hand towards progress is the right way for the industry to come out of this dark period. Rajani A Editor

The platform also helps tourism businesses and organizations to find and recruit the best talent. UNWTO Secretary-General 8

AUGUST 2021 TOURISM INDIA

Zurab Pololikashvili says: “The pandemic has hit global tourism hard. Up to 120 million jobs are at risk. However, tourism has a long history of adapting and embracing innovation. The Jobs Factory will be a great help to the millions of people who depend on tourism. It connects employers with the very best talent our sector has to offer. And it will help our Member States make important decisions based on the latest, trusted data.” Olivier Bracard, Hosco’s CEO, added: “Hospitality is all about people, and since March 2020, its workforce has been terribly affected, thus the industry as a whole. Hosco’s purpose of making hospitality an exciting journey for talent has never been so challenging yet so crucial, and we’re thrilled to be joining forces with UNWTO to expand

the impact of our technology and expertise to its Member States. We’re confident that UNWTO’s Jobs Factory, powered by Hosco, will become a critical asset for governments, employers, and hospitality professionals as we embrace recovery.” All of UNWTO’s 159 Member States will be invited to use the Jobs Factory as their national tourism recruitment platform as will its more than 500 Affiliate Members, ranging from businesses to universities and think tanks. INCONSISTENCY COULD DELAY

THE RESTART OF GLOBAL TRAVEL WTTC believes that once again, the lack of international coordination to agree on a list of approved vaccines is creating yet another major stumbling block for the restart of international travel.

T

he restart of international travel could be seriously delayed without worldwide reciprocal recognition of all approved COVID-19 vaccines, says the World Travel & Tourism Council. The global tourism body, which represents the global private Travel & Tourism sector, has issued its warning following concerns tourists face being turned away at the borders because countries don’t have a common list of internationally recognised and approved COVID-19 vaccines. This comes just days after a number of British holidaymakers, who had been administered the Indian Covishield batch of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, were rejected entry into Malta despite 10 10

AUGUST 2021 TOURISM March 2021 Tourism India INDIA

the drug being chemically identical to the UK-made vaccine. Over the past few weeks reports of holidaymakers facing obstacles to entry have been on the rise, with some even being

prevented from boarding their flights to destinations. WTTC believes that once again, the lack of international coordination to agree on a list of approved vaccines is creating yet another major stumbling block for the re-

start of international travel. This comes despite most vaccines have secured the approval of the World Health Organisation (WHO) or Stringent Regulatory Authorities (SRAs), such as the UK’s the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the Food and Drug Administration in the US, and the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Reports of travellers being turned away because they have the ‘wrong’ vaccine batches or ‘unrecognised’ vaccines have fueled concern from consumers, deterring them from booking and thereby damaging the already struggling Travel & Tourism sector. The plea for reciprocal recognition for all vaccines and vaccine batches forms part of WTTC’s four new guidelines which are aimed at safely resuming international mobility and save the millions of jobs and livelihoods which depend on this sector while kick-starting the global economic recovery. Virginia Messina, Senior Vice President WTTC, said: “Reciprocal recognition of all vaccine types and batches is essential if we are to avoid any further unnecessary and damaging delay to restarting international travel. “The failure of countries to agree on a common list of all approved and recognised vaccines is of huge concern to WTTC, as we know everyday travel is curbed, more cash-strapped Travel & Tourism businesses face the even greater strain, pushing ever more to the brink of bankruptcy. www.tourismindia.org

“We can avoid this by having a fully recognised list of all the approved vaccines – and vaccine batches – which should be the key to unlocking international travel, not the door to preventing it. “It will also give holidaymakers and travellers the confidence they need to book trips, flights and cruises, confidence in the knowledge that their fully-vaccinated status will be internationally recognised.” WTTC says the restoration of safe international travel can be achieved by following its four guidelines. Through a combination of COVID-19 testing, vaccination, digital health travel passes and the use of health and safety protocols, such as wearing face masks, safe international mobility can resume while at the same time-saving millions of jobs and livelihoods which depend on the sector and kick-starting the global economic recovery. Appropriately reduced protocols for vaccinated travellers, including no need for testing or quarantine for those fully vaccinated. Global recognition for international travel of all vaccines authorised for use and deemed 11 safe and effective by the WHO or by the WHO recognised SRAs. A data-driven, risk-based, and internationally harmonized approach to re-establishing freedom of movement, that is consistent across countries, easy to communicate and clearly understood by travellers. Global adoption of ‘digital health passes’ which enable travellers to

easily obtain and verify their vaccination status, negative COVID test result or natural immunity from a previous infection. These must work with existing border control and travel operator systems accepted by all countries. Digital verification of a traveller’s COVID status prior to travel will avoid lengthy and unsafe queues in transport hubs and terminals. Continued implementation of high-quality health and safety standards throughout all areas of the Travel & Tourism sector, including continued adoption of the WTTC’s Safe Travel Protocols and Safe Travel Stamp, with the continued wearing of face masks in crowded and enclosed areas as well as on all forms of public transport.WTTC’s fundamental guidelines to restore international mobility while safeguarding public health include: are guidelines WTTC’s fundamental to restore international mobility while safeguarding public health include: WTTC advocates the full implementation of these proportionate and responsible guidelines for travel over the next few months, as many travel restrictions begin being eased as major travel markets begin to reopen. This is against the backdrop of a successful vaccination rollout, with a subsequent decrease in deaths, cases, and hospitalisations in many countries. However, variants will continue to because of concern as the world struggles to emerge from the effects of the pandemic.

gana. The iconic Ramappa Temple showcases the outstanding craftsmanship of the great Kakatiya dynasty. I would urge you all to visit this majestic temple complex and get a first-hand experience of its grandness.”

Mr. G Kishan Reddy, Union Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) thanked the Prime Minister for his guidance and support as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) conferred the World Heritage inscription to Rudreswara Temple, (also known as the Ramappa Temple) at Palampet, Mulugu district, near Warangal in the state of Telangana. “It gives me immense pleasure to share that @ UNESCO has conferred the World Heritage inscription to Ramappa Temple atPalampet, Warangal, Telangana. I would also like to thank the Ministry of External Affairs for their efforts under the guidance of Hon’ble PM @narendramodi”. Mr. G Kishan Reddy tweeted The Rudreswara temple also known as the Ramappa temple was constructed in 1213 AD during the reign of the Kakatiya Empire by Recharla Rudra, a general of Kakatiya king Ganapati Deva. Ramappa is the sculptor who executed the work in the temple for 40 years. The presiding deity here is Ramalingeswara Swamy. The temple complexes

of Kakatiyas have a distinct style, technology, and decoration exhibiting the influence of the Kakatiyan sculptor. The Temple stands on a 6 feet high star-shaped platform with walls, pillars and ceilings adorned with intricate carvings that attest to the unique skill of the Kakatiyan sculptors. The sculptural art and decoration specific to the time and Kakatiyan Empire have an outstanding universal value. The distinct style of Kakatiyas for the gateways to temple complexes, unique only to this region confirm the highly evolved proportions of aesthetics in temple and town gateways in South India. An European such traveler had remarked that the temple was the “brightest star in the galaxy of medieval temples of the Deccan”.

KERALA’S BIO-BUBBLE TOURISM TO BE A ROLE MODEL FOR INDIA Kerala focuses on safe and risk-free tourism

S

etting a role model for the entire country in insulating tourists from Covid-19 to the maximum, Kerala has rolled out an efficient and meticulous Bio-bubble model to create protective layers of mostly inoculated service providers to receive and host tourists. Bio-bubbles are sanitized, safe,

16

AUGUST 2021 TOURISM INDIA

and secure environments, where people within them, likely to come into contact with tourists, are vaccinated. The protective ring of the Biobubble will see that tourists landing in any airport in Kerala meet only vaccinated ground staff. From the airport, they can drive to their chosen destinations in cabs, provided by accredited tour operators, whose drivers are all vaccinated. The same goes for the hotels, resorts, or homestays they stay during their holiday, where the staff is vaccinated. All tourism centers in Kerala re-opened and will be accessible to tourists who

have had at least the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine, or possessing a negative RTPCR test certificate taken before 72 hrs. This applies to hotels, resorts, homestays, houseboats, and open spaces of tourist interest. For an early revival of the pandemicravaged travel and hospitality sector, Kerala had launched a highly successful, targeted campaign to vaccinate the entire population in tourism destinations, with Vythiri in Wayanad being declared as the first destination to achieve the status. The drive aims to inoculate entire stakeholders in the tourism industry and the campaign will soon be completed in all tourist destinations across the state. “Safety of guests is nonnegotiable as far as Kerala Tourism is concerned. The Bio-bubble initiative is meant to ensure that the tourists have a risk-free stay in our state. This is a critical factor

for the revival of tourism, which has been clobbered by the pandemic. It was with this larger perspective that we successfully carried out the vaccination campaign covering the entire population in Vythiri. This initiative will tell the world that Kerala is a place where you can holiday safely,” said Mr.Mohamed Riyas. “Kerala Tourism has outlived grim crises like devastating natural calamities like floods and epidemics that battered its infrastructure and economy. We have proved to be resilient by bouncing back from each crisis. Agreed, the Covid-19 pandemic has been unprecedented in its sweep and dimension. The best way to come out of this pandemic induced setback is to set the highest premium on the safety of tourists”, said Dr. Venu V IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Tourism, Govt. of Kerala. The lockdown-weary people from all corners of the world will be treading to safe and healthy places when tourism opens up globally and nationally. Going by our natural assets and advanced social milieu,

Kerala has immense scope to tap the incoming rush to unpolluted and less crowded spaces. Creation of a safety shield like the bio-bubble is a vital component in keeping the state tourism sector ready”, said Mr. V R Krishna Teja IAS, Director of Tourism, Kerala. With the Kerala Government setting its goal of inoculating

the whole eligible population at the shortest possible span, the Covid-19 vaccination programme is progressing at a brisk pace throughout the state. So far, over 43.37 percent of the state’s total population have been administered the first dose of vaccine and 18.08 percent with both doses.

This was discussed during the 3rd webinar of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Border Tourism Webinar Series focusing on Ferozepur district for the promotion of Border Tourism in Punjab. Delivering the Keynote Address, Mr. Gurpal Singh Chahal (IAS), Deputy Commissioner – Ferozepur District, Government of Punjab, informed that recently Punjab Government has sanctioned INR 5 crores for the development of Light and Sound Show at the National Martyrs Memorial at Hussainiwala Border. The Indo-Pak Retreat Ceremony at Hussainiwala Border is a popular activity and can be witnessed from as close as 100 feet from the Zero Line. If developed and marketed properly, this can outshine the retreat ceremony at Wagah Border, Amritsar. He further mentioned that

the Harike Wild Life Sanctuary, situated on the confluence of the River Beas and Sutlej at the Ferozepur and Amritsar border is one of the most important Wild Life Sanctuaries being recognized throughout the world. It has the potential for promoting eco tourism and other activities like bird watching, boating. Mr. Chahal pointed out that

the only challenge the district faces for promoting tourism is that it doesn’t fall in mainline unlike other cities like Amritsar. He urged the industry members to visit Ferozepur and include it in the tour packages for tourists visiting Punjab. He said that ADP is based on 49 indicators from the 5 identified thematic areas, which focuses closely on improving people’s Health & Nutrition, Education, Agriculture & Water Resources, Financial Inclusion & Skill Development and Basic Infrastructure. He mentioned that tourist footfall to any area is directly proportional to the livelihood of the local people. He said that Ferozepur district has many historical places, museums, forts, wildlife to offer. Connectivity is a challenge in the district and if addressed properly can certainly help in improving tourism. Mr. Kamaraju suggested that the state government can look at launching a 20

‘Desh Bhakti’ circuit which can connect the key tourist places of Punjab. Appreciating the efforts of the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Kamaraju informed that Ferozepur district has performed extremely well in the ADP with average growth of 25% in all the thematic areas. Mr. Harsh Mittal, Manager – Marketing and Skill Development, Punjab Heritage & Tourism Promotion Board, Government of Punjab, discussed about the projects and initiatives undertaken by the state government to attract more tourists to the state. He shared that a project ‘Countryside’ has been launched which helps in promoting authentic cuisine, culture and the rural side of Punjab to the tourists. He further said that there are three retreat ceremonies organized at Attari, Ferozepur and

Fazilka. While Attari is already a popular tourist attraction, the other two needs push for the promotion of Border Tourism in the state. Mr. Manmeet Singh, Chairman – Punjab Chapter, Indian Association of Tour Operators, mentioned that while Amritsar has been a tourist attraction for years, there is a need to promote Ferozepur and other adjacent areas of Punjab. He said that the government needs to improve the infrastructure at Hussainiwala Border and Saragarhi Memorial so that Film Tourism can be promoted at these areas. Mr. Manasvee Pushkarna, Director of Sales, Taj Hotels, highlighted the need for better road connectivity and accessibility. Mr. Anirudh Gupta, CEO, D.C.M. Group of Schools, while giving a holistic background on Ferozepur district said that the district has several attractions which need

to be capitalized and infrastructure should be developed to ease tourists’ connectivity. Mr. R S Sachdeva, Mentor – Punjab State Chapter, PHDCCI, mentioned that Ferozepur district along with other districts of Punjab can play pivotal role in promoting Border Tourism as they have lot of tourist attractions and hospitality facilities. He suggested that rural stays should be organized for the tourists to get a firsthand experience of the local flavour and culture of Punjab. While presenting the theme address, Mr. Anil Parashar, Chairman – Tourism Committee, PHDCCI, said that Punjab has always ranked high when it comes to courage, might and valour. The state has made major contributions to the freedom struggle of India though in the process it had

to face its own division. The richness of the state is reflected in its dress, customs, traditions and also cuisine. There are religious sites to be visited, museums, forts and palaces to be explored and many other things to be done during a visit to Punjab. He further mentioned that Border Tourism webinar series will continue and PHDCCI would work towards showcasing the tourism potential of the diverse and untouched border districts of India. Campaigns like ‘Dekho Apna Aur Padosi Desh’ can be introduced to promote semi international travel. A national-level seminar should be organized by the Ministry of Tourism with all the 18 Border States and UTs to create awareness and buzz about this segment, which will help to increase domestic as well as international tourists. Mr. Zutshi further said that ease of access to zero lines; ensuring last mile connectivity; creating economic activities around border towns will be the key drivers for promoting Border Tourism in Meghalaya. There is a huge potential for promoting Monsoon Tourism in the state as Cherrapunji is known for being the wettest place on Earth. Emphasis should also be given to Festivals and the state government should www.tourismindia.org

create a mega Tourism Festival on the lines of the Hornbill Festival in Nagaland. Mr. Cyril V. D. Diengdoh (IAS), Director – Tourism, Government of Meghalaya, said that the state has seen a steady growth of tourist arrivals from Bangladesh over the years with 4,300 arrivals in 2014, which went up to 13,000 in 2018. An MoU has been signed between the Tour Operators Association of Meghalaya and the Bangladesh Tour Operators Association to promote Mountain to Sea Tourism. He further mentioned that the tourism department is 23 keen to develop ‘Experiential Eco Tourism’ apart from Adventure Tourism, Rural Tourism, and Homestays. In order to enhance the experience of tourists, the state government is following the three fundamentals – right pricing, carrying capacity, and zero waste. He also informed that Meghalaya Tourism has come up with a mobile app that provides a one-stop solution to tourists who wish to plan a trip and helps in contact-

less check-in following the safety protocols. Ms. Varianarica Syiem (IAS), Director – Border Areas Development Department, Government of Meghalaya, informed that there are 13 border blocks in the state and 435 recognized border villages. In order to ensure ease of movement for the tourists, several projects have been funded under the Border Area Development Programme (BADP) for the construction of roads, parking, and wayside amenities. Mr. T. Kabilan (IDAS), Director – North Eastern States, NITI Aayog, informed that the Government is keen on promoting Homestays in the state as that will aid off-beat, experiential tourism in addition to increasing options for the domestic and international tourists. He further said that Tourism has the greatest potential for generating income and employment opportunities and therefore it should be integrated in a manner that the youth in North-East Indian states do not have to move out for livelihood. TINYCHEF ACQUIRES TECHSTARS AND ZELISH

Tinychef has helped inspire users with over 3 million recipe discoveries and nearly 1.7 million meals cooked using Tinychef voice-guided assistance

T

he food AI-Tech players together account for 1.2 million users and have built a hands free cooking experience aided by Amazon Alexa. Bahubali Shete, Asha Shete, and celebrity Masterchef Sanjeev Kapoor’s voice-first culinary AI platform Tinychef are all set to acquire Zelish (the team and its assets) for an undisclosed amount. A Techstars accelerator and Bosch and Siemens Home Appliances backed company, Zelish was founded 2 years ago by Rakesh Edavalath, Saakshi Jain, and Arpit Joseph. The latest feather in Zelish’s cap is the 2021 Bosch Siemens Home Startup Award in the Product Innovation category. Previously the recipient of the “Best Of 2020 Apps” by Google Play, and the Editors Choice Award for “Best Upcoming App” in July 2020, Zelish has 32

covered sizable ground in a short span of time. By acquiring Zelish, Tinychef will also gain access to the app’s 125,000 users and 35% of whom are monthly active users! Speaking on the acquisition Zelish, co-founder, Saakshi Jain said. “We’re really excited about this acquisition as it will help us take the Zelish experience into the world of voice-assisted cooking. With Tinychef in the picture, users can look forward to a completely handsfree experience. We are looking forward to the Zelish app spreading across the Indian sub-continent and growing its presence globally in the North American market as well.” Rakesh Edavalath, co-founder of Zelish added, “We are thrilled to expand the vision of our techfirst platform Zelish to become a voice-guided assistant thanks to Tinychef. Most people who man-

age the kitchen complain that there is a constant back and forth between operating their phones and managing the said tasks. People will soon be able to relish the Zelish experience on voice assistants like Alexa instead of going back and forth on recipe videos. ” To put things into perspective nearly 4 million recipes were requested and over 1.7 million meals have been cooked using the Tinychef skill on Alexa in India alone and over half a million recipes were made using Zelish last year! Meanwhile, Tinychef already has over a million users and over 100,000 active monthly users in India and within a month of its launch, it has garnered over 25,000 users in North America with the

bulk of the user base belonging to the US and Canadian markets. Zelish gives Tinychef a powerful app with a highly engaged user base. Similarly, this alliance also gives Zelish a chance to integrate with Tinychef’s voice-assisted, Alexa-enabled, hands-free cooking universe. Tinychef now aids everything from automatic meal planning to 1-click grocery shopping, voice-guided cooking, and the use of connected Appliances. Simply put, people will now be able to discover recipes and get inspired, plan their meals, shop for products, and indulge in voice-guided cooking all from one platform. This is exciting as voice search queries in India are growing at 270% and over 82% of smart-

phone users are already using voice search on a regular basis. Esentially Zelish is an app that lets users plan meals, shop for ingredients, and cook based on recipes by celebrity chefs and influencers like Ranveer Brar & Hebbar’s Kitchen. The pandemic has encouraged a lot of people to start cooking at home for healthy, safe, and hygienic food. Zelish makes it easy for people to cook delicious meals at home without wasting food or struggling with meal ideas. Excited about this acquisition Tinychef Co-Founder, Bahubali Shete said, “As a pioneer in voicefirst solutions on smart speakers for consumers in the kitchen, adding smartphones was the natural next step for us so that we become truly a ‘device agnostic’ smart kitchen assistant. ‘I am super excited to bring Zelish into Tinychef’, would be an understatement given the potential of the combined solution, team, and partnerships that we bring together. I am really bullish that we will make Tinychef the default kitchen assistant for every kitchen around the world” “I have always tried to impact kitchens in India and across the world with simple and healthier recipes and tips that households appreciate. I am looking forward to seeing kitchens across the world get even simpler with these two wonderful brands combining into something even more powerful.” Added Celebrity Chef Sanjeev Kapoor, Co-Founder Tinychef Tinychef has helped inspire users with over 3 million recipe discoveries and nearly 1.7 million meals cooked using Tinychef voice-guided assistance. The app currently has a user retention rate of 40% and grocery shopping pilots have seen nearly 50,000 users/month add ingredients to shopping lists across the app/partner channels. Going forward this acquisition is projected to help Tinychef achieve MoM Growth of 70%. AUGUST 2021 TOURISM INDIA

INDIGO BECOMES FIRST INDIAN AIRLINE TO LAUNCH A PILOT FOR IATA TRAVEL PASS To initiate pilot from August 20, 2021

A

s s part of the effort to chart recovery for international travel, IndiGo has partnered with International Air Transport Association (IATA) to become the first Indian airline to launch a pilot for IATA Travel Pass to help passengers easily and securely manage their travel in line with any government requirements for COVID-19 testing or vaccine information. The airlines will initiate pilot from August 20, 2021. IATA Travel Pass is a mobile app that helps travellers to store and manage their verified certifications for COVID-19 tests or vaccines. It is more secure and efficient than current paper processes used to manage health requirements. This is important given the potentially 35 enormous scale of testing or vaccine verifications that will need to be securely managed. The pass will enable IndiGo passengers to create a ‘digital passport’ to verify their pre-travel test or vaccination status to meet the SOPs of the destination. The passengers will be able to share the test and vaccination certificates with authorities as well as airlines to facilitate travel. The app will also enable passengers to manage and

save all their travel documentation digitally and seamlessly throughout the travel experience. Mr Ronojoy Dutta, Chief Executive Officer, IndiGo said, “We are proud to partner with IATA to become the country’s first airline to take this step towards enabling customers with a travel pass mobile app. This initiative is a significant step to prepare for a new normal, especially with regard to international travel. Today, most countries have implemented protocols for travellers across the globe and this IATA Travel Pass will simplify and digitize the requisite passenger information for respective countries. We are certain that our collaboration with IATA on this innovation will prove to be a stepping-stone towards international air travel recovery while providing a hassle-free experience to our customers”. The platform will also enable authorized labs and test centres to securely send test results or vaccination certificates to passengers. The global registry, operated by IATA, will manage and allow the secure flow of necessary information amongst all stakeholders and provide a seamless passenger experience.

country’s top red wine variety and the second-most exported wine after Sauvignon Blanc. Pinot Noir is predominantly grown in the cooler southerly regions in New Zealand: Wairarapa, Marlborough, Nelson,

North Canterbury, and Central Otago. The huge diversity in climates and soils enables a wide range of styles from these main Pinot Noir producing regions, while also offering experiences unique to each region.

Growing this grape isn’t easy, but it sure is worth it. Not only do these grapes taste amazing when turned into wine, they are beautiful to gaze upon when growing. Wairarapa Wairarapa, meaning “land of glistening waters” in Māori, is the main North Island region with a climate best suited to this heartbreak grape. With a fascinating early settler history, vines were first planted here in 1883 but fell victim to the temperance movement in 1905. Wairarapa’s modern wine history dates from the late 1970s, and the region boasts some of New Zealand’s most sought-after Pinot Noir producers. Between sub-regions Martinborough, Gladstone, and Masterton, there are over 30 cellar doors. The region’s flagship red is richly flavoured and warm, with darker fruit aromas, often with a savoury component. www.tourismindia.org

Marlborough Although Marlborough is known for its Sauvignon Blanc, it is also the largest Pinot Noir growing region in New Zealand. The first plantings of the variety in Marlborough took place as far back as 1973, though for the next 20-plus years most of the Pinot Noir fruit grown in the region was used to make sparkling wine until serious growth began after the year 2000. Marlborough is a wine-lovers dream destination, as visitors 45 than 40 can choose from more cellar doors within minutes of touching down at the Blenheim airport. Nelson The picturesque region of Nelson is found on the northern tip of the South Island, and because it is protected by mountain ranges on three sides, Nelson is blessed climatically. The region often leads the country in sunshine hours, while the dryness of the late summer months

suits early ripening Pinot Noir. Nelson has a vibrant artistic and café culture and offers a wonderful sense of tranquillity and relaxation – add in a National Park and many cellar doors all on Nelson’s doorstep, and you have the perfect place to enjoy the wines and the scenery. North Canterbury In North Canterbury, Pinot Noir here ranges from perfumed and pretty, to dark and brooding. North Canterbury’s cool, dry climate with high sunshine and a long growing season gives this region’s Pinot Noir finesse and depth, with supple structure and good complexity. Today, vineyards are dotted across the region, and North Canterbury is a great wine destination for those looking to discover some hidden gems. The cellar doors of North Canterbury are all within easy reach of the Christchurch Airport, ensuring you are sipping wine shortly after touchdown. AUGUST 2021 TOURISM INDIA

VACCINE TOURISM IS TAKING OFF AT SFO Over 30,000 vaccines administered; fastest-growing category is foreign visitors

A

s the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) surpasses 30,000 vaccine doses administered at the Airport, a clear trend has emerged: more and more foreign travelers are making vaccination a part of their visit to San Francisco. Known as “vaccine tourism,” this concept represents the fastest-growing category of visitors to the SFO Medical Clinic, where the free Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine is administered. At present, 80% of new vaccine appointments at SFO are coming from non-US citizens, and over 1,000 doses have already been administered to visitors from 58 countries around the world. “This trend truly represents a win-win situation for all,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “It ensures that vaccines doses do not go unused by making them available to those who may have trouble accessing it in their home country. It also stimulates travel and visitor spending for the Bay Area, and – most importantly – it helps protect against the community’s spread of the virus. My thanks go out to the entire team for making this program a reality.” www.tourismindia.org

Since late May, the SFO Medical Clinic, located pre-security in the International Terminal, has been offering free single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccines on an appointment basis. SFO first offered vaccines onsite in February, when it partnered with the County of San Mateo to provide vaccines to health care workers and County residents over 65. The Airport converted one of its multi-lev-

el garages to serve as a drivethrough vaccination facility. Over 26,500 doses were administered through this program. SFO also launched a vaccination clinic in early May, located in the International Terminal, which offered doses to airport workers, local residents, and travelers. This program was administered through a partnership with Safeway and administered almost 2,200 doses.

VINTAGE RALLY WATCHES CELEBRATING THE ‘ART DE VIVRE’ OF GENTLEMEN DRIVERS This collection is based on a close collaboration with Austin-Healey, the two brands have joined forces back in 2004

F

or over 15 years, connoisseurs of beautiful engineering have honoured the union of automobiles and watchmaking with the limited

Vintage Rally series, created by Frederique Constant in tribute to the legendary Austin-Healey. Contributing to this legacy are two new models in retro styles that are every bit as sleek as they are stylish. It’s become something of a ritual that fans of the Geneva-based Maison have come to expect like clockwork; this year, Frederique Constant is offering new versions of its iconic Vintage Rally collection, the only one it has ever designed for car collectors. The similarities with watchmaking include an appreciation of beautiful engineering, precision, timeless design, the combination of leather and metal, comfort, and above all, a certain ‘art de vivre’. The Vintage Rally by Frederique Constant represents all that… and plenty more besides. 56

AUGUST 2021 TOURISM INDIA

This collection is based on a close collaboration with Austin-Healey, the two brands have joined forces back in 2004. Counting 17 years of fellowship geared around sport and watchmaking, theirs is one of the most enduring associations in the industry, reflective of the unbreakable bond the two Maisons share in drawing on tradition to create thoroughly modern designs, especially for those who truly appreciate craftsmanship and elegance.

Good company on the road

If the Vintage Rally collection has seen many wonderful breakaways in its time, 2021 is one of the few years to produce not just one, but two editions of the same vintage. Authenticated by the original “Healey” logo marked on the dial, these Vintage Rally Healey Automatic Small Seconds are in fittingly short supply, with only 888 pieces of each one available. The green version is probably the most iconic of all. Extending across the whole dial, this particular shade of British racing green alludes to the legendary colour of the Austin-Healey company. A study in contrast and a return to the roots of one of the most iconic rally car colours, ‘British racing green’ has long been associated with the vintage Austin Healeys that are especially desirable among collectors now. For this model, Frederique Constant has opted for luminescent silvered applique hour markers with the 6 and the 12 being more generously proportioned – one of the distinguishing features of the Vintage Rally collection. The piece has an off-center small seconds hand at 9 o’clock. Its very traditional complication has only surfaced once in almost 20 years. It is counterbalanced at 3 o’clock by a date window. Running around the dial is the flange www.tourismindia.org

complete with a 60-minute scale, all set within a 40 mm diameter case, a favourite with collectors on account of its timeless quality. The perforated strap has received particular attention; on this ‘racing green’ model, it comes in brown leather. Not found anywhere else on the watch, this colour also recalls the upholstery of the beautiful cars from the 1940s to the 1970s, as well as the gloves, are worn by gentlemen57drivers in their element. Finally, the last version is supposed to be the most classic, aligned as it is with the fine watchmaking that Frederique Constant has always championed in Geneva. The case is rose gold plated, as are the hour markers, hands, and crown. This sunny shade of gold really sets off the midnight blue dial, picked up on the leather strap. Day and night, the classic

and classy elegance of the latest Vintage Rally Healey Automatic Small Seconds shine through. The case backs of these new models have been engraved with a Healey being driven at full throttle; the famous Healey 100S NOJ393 was purchased by a collector for £155 in 1969 and sold for nearly €1 million in December 2011. Each piece comes in a collector’s gift set, complete with a miniature replica of the NOJ393. Frederique Constant creates, develops, assembles, and controls a wide variety of mechanical, quartz, and connected timepieces at the same time within its 6,200 m2 Manufacture in Plan-les-Ouates (GE). To this day, Frederique Constant has designed 29 Manufacture calibers, including high complications, such as the Tourbillon, Perpetual Calendar, and Flyback Chronograph.
