EDITOR’S NOTE

IT’S HIGH TIME TO REVIEW AND RESOLVE

T

he Tourism sector’s huge potential and its growth is said to be faster than the global economy as a whole, which begs the question, what can we do to make this Industry’s growth planned, and sustainable while also keeping it inclusive? As more and more people from all over the world discover this sector, the need ensure environmental safety and sustainability by the tourism industry grows. Forecasts for 2018 suggested that growth will continue and Travel& Tourism is expected to support more than 400 million jobs globally, which equates to 1 in 9 of all jobs. As tourism broadens its scope target to forests, there are increasing concerns of environmental jeopardy, with cases like in the Western Ghats where tourists laid waste to various remote areas, mostly due to poor waste management, with cleanups become less effective than intended and areas which tourists are not allowed to enter because of environmental reasons getting littered, a complicated security issue. The usage of plastic is always high as a result of growing consumerism, which is often seen as a looming threat to the environment. Unplanned and unregulated urbanization happening caused by the increase in tourist footfalls always end up with poor waste management, especially plastic waste doesn’t make the situation any better. Since tourists move from destinations within a stipulated time, the waste disposal in tourism spots are always handed over to local communities or the authorities. According to UNEP, approximately 8 million tones of plastic are dumped into the ocean every minute,

making our oceans a plastic broth. We buy one million plastic bottles every minute, a large quantity of them ending up in our surroundings. More than 15,000 tons of plasticwaste is generated in India alone every day. The lack of more serious efforts from Industry stakeholders and the rest of the Tourism fraternity could have sever and lasting negative consequences beyond the loss of serenity in the nature around us. Initiatives such as #BeatPlasticPollution as the theme of World Environment Day, 2018 help educate local economic activities and inspire them to take up more initiatives. Tourism Carrying Capacity study is a holistic way of understanding how much tourism a specific place can contain, without impacting other important activities of the place. The capacity of a place to handle plastic waste by looking at consumption and disposal of plastic, the capacity of the place to segregate waste and the capacity to recycle plastic waste, would form a component of the tourism carrying capacity. Each destination will be unique about their own tourism carrying capacity and should assess kind of tourism and the volume that it can sustainably handle. The world is reeling under a plastic management crisis where a sizeable amount of it being contributed by Tourism. It’s high time to revive and resolve the problem and the authorities and Tourism fraternities cannot ignore their responsibilities to check the unplanned growth of tourism. Rajani A Executive Editor

’JINGLE-JANGLE‘ OF INDIAN

CULTURE

BANGLES HAVE A TRADITIONAL VALUE AND CONSIDERED TO BE AUSPICIOUS FOR A MARRIED WOMEN ESPECIALLY FOR MOST INDIAN WEDDINGS. by Rajani A

‘I

ncredible India’ is a befitting tagline to the country, one which varies in culture, tradition, art forms, attire and even ornaments like no other. Bangles, the thin, often rigid ornament similar to a solid bracelet in Indian culture has innumerable significance. Bangles are considered the symbol of ‘the complete woman’ or ‘Saubhagya’as a man offers his lady bangles, of varying designs and quantities. The word Bangle is derived from the Hindi word ‘bungri’ means glass, and are traditional ornaments mostly worn by women all over South Asia in countries such as Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh besides India. Bangles have a traditional value and it is considered inauspicious to be bare handed especially for a married woman for most Indian weddings. In North India, the bride generally wears glass bangles, with the bangles themselves symbolizing the Suhaag (love) for the husband and their prosperity in married life afterwards. In certain parts of India, 28

like Punjab for instance.Men too wear bangles as part of custom with the father of the bride presenting the groom with a gold ring, called a Kara (steel or iron bangle). The Punjabi woman on her wedding day wears a set of bangles called Chooda which is a set of white and red bangles with stone work. According to Sikh tradition, a woman is not supposed to buy the bangles she wears. Bangles are part of traditional Indian jewelry and thus they are still preferred at occasions such as marriages and festivals, though young girls still tend to wear them and toddlers also sometimes wear bangles, often made of gold or silver. In Bengal and Odisha, married women wear white bangles made of shells. Bengali bangles made by fusing thin gold strip with hand

History

The bangles are usually made from metal (copper, silver, gold, iron etc.), wood, plastic and glass. Archaeologists have excavated bangles made of various metals from various parts of India with highly ornate bangles dating back to the Mauryan Empire and gold bangles excavated from the historic site of Taxila, proving just how far back the tradition goes. A bronze figure of a dancing girl standing with one arm at her hip, the other arm with a collection of bangles, is a famously known artifact excavated fromMohenjo-Daro, a piece which

Wearing ‘Kanganas’ (slightly thicker ornate bangles) is a common trope shown in various mythic and epic stories, another strong case that not only women, but alsomen have been adorning their arms with bangles since ancient times in India All the pre-Vedic era and post-Vedic era bangles were purely cosmetic until the medieval period. Any material like terracotta, gold, silver, Iron that lent itself to craftsmanship and could be worked on by a smith were used to make bangles and the legacy of wearing bangles were marked in the history from Sindhu Saraswathi civilization. The significance of colours

In Indian culture, the colours of bangles also have its own significances in Indian tradition. For Indian women, bangles are not just mere ornaments. It is a tradition to wear bangles after marriage, symbolizing health, luck and prosperity. Bangles are more than accessories for Indian women. Traditionally, they are more often than not, a part of their identity. Red signifies energy and prosperity, while green denotes good luck and fertility. Yellow bangles are meant for happiness, white is for new beginnings and orange is for success. Silver bangles denote strength and gold bangles are the ultimate symbol of fortune and prosperity.

Amadeus launches its Airport Common Use Service for India FAST AND EASY TO IMPLEMENT, WITH ACUS AND AN INTERNET CONNECTION

A

madeus introduced the ‘Airport Common Use Service’ (ACUS) to key stakeholders in the Indian aviation industry at India’s first Common Use Roundtable, an event hosted by Amadeus and Bird Group. Imagine being checked-in for your flight at the hotel or at your congress center before you leave for the airport. These are just some of the options that Amadeus’ Airport Common Use Service (ACUS) offers to improve the way airports and airlines serve their passengers. India has experienced a six-fold increase in air passenger numbers over the past decade as its citizens take advantage of better connectivity and cheaper fares. With this hike in travelers comes more congested airports. The architecture of Amadeus ACUS allows ‘fixed’ check-in counters to be rapidly redeployed anywhere within the terminal, and to ‘off airport’ locations, to enable the airport to access additional passenger capacity on demand to meet short notice or seasonal fluctuations. To mark the launch of ACUS in India, Amadeus and Bird Group held India’s first Common Use Roundtable on May 17th and 18th in New Delhi, the event brought together India’s senior airline and airport industry leaders to share insights, learnings and to create a vision for the future of Common Use in the country. Fast and easy to implement, with ACUS and an internet connection (e.g. Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G mobile telecommunications), passenger 38

processing services can be easily extended to include off-airport locations such as hotels, exhibitions, convention centers, train stations and cruise liners. ACUS can be used on any device including laptops and relocatable devices. The adoption of ACUS will allow airports to eliminate costly on-site systems, lowering their operational expenses and minimizing their environmental impact. Airlines will also be able to reduce costs owing to centralized connectivity to airports and simplified passenger processing with offering newgeneration, multiple choice, enhanced check-in services to its passengers Sarah Samuel, Head of Airport IT, Asia Pacific of Amadeus says, “The rapid growth of passengers traveling

in India means airports are under a lot pressure. Now more than ever, they need to think differently to provide the service expected by consumers. The airport industry has advanced tremendously from the days of dedicated airline check-in desks towards a much more flexible and shared environment. Globally, we are now seeing airports ready to embrace change in order to maximise commercial and operational performance. Airlines are already running many critical applications that are centrally hosted and accesible by their agents via the internet, we are now seeing the airport industry follow this trend with Amadeus ACUS. Our platform has enabled the airport ecosystem to use its resources more intelligently, ultimately improving the passenger experience and taking the next step towards becoming the airport of the future. We look forward to working with airports in India and establishing a place for ACUS in the market place.” Rajesh Suri, EVP, Business Development, Bird Group shared “Airports and airlines around the world are looking at how new technologies and solutions can improve passenger experience and operations throughout the airport. Behind the scenes and in front of the passenger, we are pleased to introduce ACUS to India which is indeed a milestone moment for us as we demonstrate our commitment to offer best-in-class solutions to our business partners across the Indian subcontinent”. Airlines Urge Caution on Airport Privatization 74TH AGM OF IATA WARNS GOVERNMENTS ABOUT PRIVATIZATION AIRPORTS

T

he International Air Transport Association (IATA) 74th Annual General Meeting (AGM) urged governments to take a cautious approach when considering airport privatization. In a unanimously passed resolution, IATA members called on governments to prioritize the long-term economic and social benefits delivered by an effective airport ahead of the shortterm financial gains provided by a poorly thought-out privatization. “We are in an infrastructure crisis. Cash-strapped governments are looking to the private sectv or to help develop much needed airport capacity. But it is wrong to assume that the private sector has all the answers. Airlines have not yet experienced an airport privatization that has fully lived up to its promised benefits over the long term. Airports are critical infrastructure. It is important that governments take a long-term view focusing on solutions that will deliver the best economic and social benefits. Selling airport assets for a short-term cash injection to the treasury is a mistake,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO. Currently about 14% of airports globally have some level of privatization. As they tend to be large hubs, they handle about 40% of global traffic. “IATA research shows that private sector airports are more expensive. But we could not see any gains in efficiency or levels of investment. This runs counter to the experience of airline privatization where enhanced

40

competition resulted in lower pricing to consumers. So we don’t accept that airport privatization must lead to higher costs. Airports have significant market power. Effective regulation is critical to avoiding its abuse— particularly when run for profit by private sector interests,” said de Juniac who also noted that five of the top six passenger ranked airports by Skytrax are in public hands.

Informed Decision-Making

IATA member airlines resolved to urge governments considering airport privatization to: Focus on the long-term economic and social benefits of an effective airport Learn from our positive experiences with corporatization, new financing models, and alternative ways of tapping private sector participation Make informed decisions on ownership and operating models to best protect consumer interests, and Lock-in the benefits of competitive airport infrastructure with rigorous regulation. “There is no one-size-fits-all solution. A broad range of ownership operating models exist that can meet a government’s strategic objectives without a transfer of control or ownership to the private sector. Globally, many of the most successful airports are operated as corporatized entities of governments. Governments need to evaluate the pros and cons of different models taking into account interests of all stakeholders, including airlines and customers. The most important thing is that airports meet the needs of customers and airport infrastructure users, at a fair price. And to do that, user consultation must be an integral part of the consideration process,” said de Juniac.

Safeguarding consumer interests when pursuing privatization

Recognizing that when airport

privatization is pursued, a key determinant of success is the effective balance of the interests of consumers, airlines, investors, citizens and economies IATA’s member airlines called for: Governments to protect consumer interests by establishing robust regulatory safeguards to ensure cost efficiency in charges and improvements in investments and service levels Expectations for performance improvement to be set in consultation with airport users and the consumers Periodic monitoring of airport privatization through public consultation, with corrective action taken to ensure benefits are realized for the passengers, for airlines and for cargo consumers. “Efficient and economical air transport contributes directly to a community’s prosperity. Poorly thought-out airport privatizations put this at risk. The balancing role of effective and strong economic regulation is essential,” said de Juniac.
