ASIA PACIFIC PREDICTS 900 MILLION INTERNATIONAL VISITORS IN 2023
T
AVERAGE GROWTH RATE FOR FOREIGN VISITOR ARRIVALS IN ASIA WILL BE 6.2 PERCENT BETWEEN 2018 AND 2023
10
Tourism India February 2019
he overall annual growth rate for international visitors into 40 Asia Pacific destinations is estimated to have been around 7.8 percent in 2018, generating an inbound volume of around 688 million for the year – almost 50 million more foreign arrivals than in 2017. According to the Executive Summary of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) ‘Asia Pacific Visitor Forecasts 2019-2023’ released recently, 40 destinations within Asia Pacific collectively are predicted to show an average growth rate of 5.5 percent per
annum between 2018 and 2023, to host close to 900 million foreign visitor arrivals in 2023. Asia will continue its strong growth momentum with an expected annual average growth rate for foreign visitor arrivals of 6.2 percent between 2018 and 2023, while the Pacific and the Americas follow with average growth rates of 4.4 percent and 3.1 percent per year respectively, over the same period. Driven by its strong average annual growth rate, Asia will receive the bulk of the foreign arrivals between 2018 and 2023. After capturing a relative
share of close to 74 percent of foreign arrivals in 2018, the proportion into Asia is expected to increase to over 76 percent by the end of the forecast period (2023). The impact on the Americas and the Pacific is a slight contraction in their respective relative shares from 22.4 percent in 2018 to just under 20 percent in 2023 for the former, and from four percent to 3.8 percent for the latter, even as their respective numbers of foreign arrivals increase. Asia will also be the strongest generator of foreign arrivals into Asia Pacific over the forecast period, improving its relative share of arrivals from 63.9 percentage points in 2018, to over 66 percentage points in 2023. Intra-regional travel flows remain important for both the Americas and Asia, with the former destination region seeing over three-quarters of its
foreign arrivals originating within that region in both 2018 and 2023. Similarly, for Asia, where intraregional travel flows will increase in relative terms, from almost 94% in 2018 to over 94% by 2023. The Pacific destination region differs, in as much as more than half of its inbound international visitor arrivals originated in Asia in 2018 with that proportion forecast to increase to around 57% by 2023. Even so, the intra-regional flows from the Pacific to the Pacific remain significant at over 30% in 2023. PATA CEO Dr. Mario Hardy points out that “Asia continues to be the engine of growth for foreign arrivals into Asia Pacific, with intraregional flows in particular, remaining important. This intra-regional activity is true for the Americas as well, but less so for the Pacific which is rapidly
becoming more popular with Asian markets.” He further adds, “Once again, we need to be mindful of the fact that in delivering positive and memorable experiences to a rapidly changing inbound market mix, we need to maintain a service ethic and mind-set that is consistently superior and at the same time, tailored to the very different needs of an increasingly diverse range of visitors”. Furthermore, Dr. Hardy noted that, “In developing a service mindset we need to ask ourselves are we preparing to welcome 898 million foreign arrivals into Asia Pacific in 2023, or should we think of that instead, as one very special visitor, 898 million times. Your perspective on that can make all the difference”.

KERALA TOURISM NETS RECORD REVENUE OF OVER RS 36,000 CRORE IN 2018 MARKS INCREASE IN NUMBER OF VISITORS DESPITE FLOODS
16
Tourism India February 2019
T
he number of domestic and foreign tourist arrivals to Kerala showed a healthy increase, coupled with a record revenue earning, in 2018, in a clear demonstration that the tourism sector has rebounded quickly after the devastating August floods. Over 16.7 million tourists visited Kerala in 2018 as against 15.76 million the previous year, recording an increase of 5.93 per cent. Of the total footfalls, 1.09 million were foreign tourists, who visited the state that has been rated as one of world’s must-see destinations by international media and bestowed with coveted honours by premier tourism fairs across the globe. The share of revenue from foreign visitors touched Rs 8,764.46 crore, during the period that also saw a spurt in arrival of domestic tourists as well. Domestic tourism sector also gained during the period with visitors exceeding 15.6 million, showing an increase of 6.35 per cent. Significantly, in the first quarter of the year up to March 31, tourist arrival to the state recorded an impressive 12.3 per cent growth in the case of foreign visitors and 20 per cent in the case of domestic tourists. The Nipah outbreak in May in some parts of the state and the crippling floods in August led to a fall in arrivals. This trend, however, was quickly reversed by the determined actions of the state government and Tourism Department, putting back the sector firmly on the growth trajectory. “It is significant that the number of tourists who visited Kerala almost touched half the state’s total population. This impressive growth has been achieved against adverse factors such as the century’s severest deluge,” said Mr. Kadakampally Surendran, Minister for Tourism, Kerala. The UK accounted for the largest number of foreign visitors of over 200,000, followed by the United States,

France, Germany and Saudi Arabia. The number of visitors from other European countries like Sweden and Italy also increased during the period. “It was through hard work and determination of the Tourism Department, Tourism trade and the coordinated efforts of other government departments that the state had been able to achieve this impressive growth,” said Ms. Rani George IAS, Secretary, Kerala Tourism. The campaign mounted through
the media, including social media platforms, also played a vital role in this success story, she noted. Mr. P Bala Kiran IAS, Director of Kerala Tourism said the tourist arrivals in the state last year had been both inspiring and impressive. “We are sure the state will be able to achieve better results this year on the strength of attractive products and new projects conceived and implemented by the government.”

KERALA’S RESPONSIBLE TOURISM CAN MAKE IT SCORE HIGH ON SDGS: Dr. Harold Goodwin 18
Tourism India February 2019
K
erala’s successes with Responsible Tourism (RT) can pivot the state to a high rank in the attainment of the globally accepted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, internationally accredited tourism expert Dr Harold Goodwin has said. “The most important thing for me is the success of the Responsible Tourism Mission and the way in which local communities have been enabled to earn from tourism as an additional livelihood. Local communities don’t stop what they were doing before but have an additional source of income,” noted Dr Goodwin, who is the Founder and Managing Director of the International Centre for Responsible Tourism. During a recent visit to Kerala in connection with an international symposium on People's Participation for Participatory Planning & Empowerment through Responsible Tourism (PEPPER), organised by the Responsible Tourism Mission under the Tourism Department, he said the state can also favourably score in the aspects of alternative technologies, soil and water management. “Everybody struggles with carbon, but in Kerala there is a fairly rapid uptake of alternative technologies such as solar which is very successful -- very good management of water resources, smallscale but very productive agriculture with intensive use of the land and the management of the soil along with a very productive horticulture,” the expert observed. On partnerships for the SDGs, Kerala can be among the best places in the world, said Dr Goodwin, an Emeritus Professor at Manchester Metropolitan University and Advisor to the World Travel Market. “When I see the relationship between the Tourism Minister or the Director and the Panchayats, I don’t know anywhere else in the world where this is possible, except probably in a city like Barcelona,” he explained. On how tourism sector can contribute to the state’s rebuilding after the August
floods, Dr Goodwin said the only way the tourism industry can help in the recovery is to get back on its feet and get tourists travelling here. “Kerala is a very beautiful place to visit,” he added. He had also a word of appreciation for the political system and the Panchayats in Kerala who he said did not ignore the interests of the local people. “If you remember the tsunami, though it was a very different situation, what was striking there is that the opportunity was taken to remove the local people from the tourist areas. That has not happened here,” he pointed out. Speaking about the disaster, Dr Goodwin added, “To be honest, I expected to see a lot more damage. One of the problems about natural disasters, when they hit tourism areas, is that the news of the disaster travels very fast, the news of the recovery does not.” Though cautioning Kerala against the risk of ‘over tourism’, Dr Goodwin welcomed the growth of Vaikom as an RT destination, which has helped to shift the burden from Kumarakom. To sustain the successes in RT destinations, he stressed the importance of marketing so that the villagers reap the benefits of their investments February 2019 Tourism India

YEARS OF ONEWORLD
AS ONEWORLD MARKS ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY, THE GLOBAL AIRLINE ALLIANCE UNVEILS MAJOR BENEFITS FOR CUSTOMERS AND AIRLINES
24
Tourism India February 2019
T
he CEOs of oneworld® member airlines has met in London recently to unveil a radical transformation of the global alliance as it marks the 20th anniversary of its launch. The moves are designed to increase the value that oneworld delivers to customers and to its member airlines into its third decade, while reflecting the substantial changes in the marketplace and the industry since oneworld originally took off on 1 February 1999. Mr. Rob Gurney, CEO of oneworld alliance said: “In the two decades since oneworld was launched, the
industry and consumer behaviours have changed fundamentally. Most of our member airlines have undergone comprehensive restructuring. Some have merged. When oneworld first took off, hardly any airline offered online bookings. Smartphones were in the future. Social media did not exist. Airline fares included everything. Lowcost carriers were in their infancy. “Since then, global alliances have grown greatly in terms of membership but, to be frank, they have failed to keep pace with the changes that their
members, the industry at large and the marketplace have experienced. At oneworld, we are making up for that. As we enter our third decade, we are undergoing a radical transformation, with a host of fresh initiatives to strengthen further the relevance of the alliance to our member airlines and our customers.” Mr. Alan Joyce, Group CEO of Qantas and Chairman of oneworld Governing Board added: “Qantas was one of the airlines that founded oneworld 20 years ago and we’ve seen it evolve into the leading alliance in the sky.
A NEW ONEWORLD DIGITAL PLATFORM THAT WILL BRING TO LIFE IN THE DIGITAL ERA THE ALLIANCE’S CORE PROMISE OF SEAMLESS CONNECTIVITY FOR CUSTOMERS FLYING ON MULTI-SECTOR, MULTIAIRLINE JOURNEYS, VIA THE CONVENIENCE OF THEIR PREFERRED MEMBER AIRLINE’S MOBILE APP OR WEBSITE – WITHOUT HAVING TO DOWNLOAD ANY ADDITIONAL APP OR ENTER MORE LOG-IN CREDENTIALS.
“In some ways, oneworld represents a team of rivals, given several members are direct competitors in various regions. For two decades it’s been able to bring together the best carriers, lounges, frequent flyer programs and networks offer people a much smoother travel experience. Now, as the alliance enters its third decade, we are stepping up that cooperation and modernising how we work together to make oneworld even more relevant to international travellers and to its member airlines.”
Rob Gurney and Alan Joyce were joined at the London event by their counterparts from oneworld’s other three founding members, American Airlines, British Airways and Cathay Pacific Airways who commented on behalf of colleagues from many of the other airlines that have joined them in the alliance since then, who were also present. Mr. Vipula Gunatilleka, CEO, SriLankan Airlines said: “SriLankan Airlines sends our best wishes to the oneworld team and all other member airlines on this momentous occasion of marking two decades. Since 2014, we have had the privilege of being part of this prestigious alliance and it has opened up a world of opportunities for us. More importantly, this has enabled us to offer our passengers extensive connectivity and enhanced frequent flyer benefits. On the other hand, as the representative of the South Asia region, it is both our pleasure and honour to add exotic and vibrant destinations to the oneworld route map. The Travel Bright campaign that takes off today presents a progressive outlook to air travel. It will inspire many more to enjoy the benefits of the alliance and be part of the world that we bring together as member airlines of oneworld.” February 2019 Tourism India

2018 A LANDMARK YEAR FOR INDIAN ARRIVALS TO
JORDAN
BOLLYWOOD FILM KRRISH 3 HAS FILMED AT JORDAN AND CAPTURED THE MAGNIFICENCE OF THE DESTINATION
J
ordan Tourism Board has recently announced that it has witnessed the growth of 30.40% in 2018 from the Indian market. Dr. Abed Al Razzaq Arabiyat, Managing Director of the Jordan Tourism Board, elaborated: “The Jordanian-Indian relationship has witnessed a tremendous positive shift throughout 2018. His Majesty King Abdullah II Ibn Al-Hussein’s visit to India in February 2018 has
32
Tourism India February 2019
had a cascading effect on the whole dynamics that connect both countries. Granting Indian visitors an uponarrival visa was one of these changes that helped increase the number of Indian tourists visiting Jordan for its remarkable religious and historic sites, such as the Baptism Site and Petra, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Moreover, close to Petra, one can witness a Mars-like nature-crafted setup called Wadi Rum, which, just like Petra, has been incredibly used by big Hollywood studios to shoot some of its most iconic feature films, from Indiana
Jones and the Last Crusade and The Martian to the upcoming hits Aladdin and Star Wars: Episode IX. Bollywood has recently discovered the magnificence of Jordan as a filming location to shoot some of its feature films, including Krrish 3, and with the recently facilitated upon-arrival visas, Bollywood’s presence in Jordan is promising to be even more fruitful! On a marketing level, the Jordan Tourism Board executed a number of marketing campaigns in India in 2018 to promote Jordan, which played a key role in presenting Jordan as a go-to destination in the Middle East."
The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, which once captivated ancient travellers, continues to enthral a whole new generation as a modern, vibrant nation. From the haunting, primeval starkness of Wadi Rum, to the teeming centre of urban Amman, from the majestic ruins of bygone civilizations to the timeless splendour of the Dead Sea, Jordan is unveiled as a unique destination offering breathtaking and mysterious sights, high standard accommodations, exquisite cuisine and countless activities that can provide visitors with inspiration, motivation, and rejuvenation. Marveling at herds of gazelles and oryx and migrating birds, camping amidst the grandeur of Wadi Rum or Dana Reserve, trekking the ancient caravan trails from the highlands of Moab and Edom, hiking the wooded hills of biblical Gilead, or experiencing the unique, cleansing mud baths of the Dead Sea are just a few examples of the treasures awaiting visitors to this unique kingdom. The new stream of luxury hotels emerging in Amman, Petra, Aqaba and the Dead Sea is just adding quality to a refined product that is distinct, accessible and friendly; a product that is home to a new display of modern meeting facilities and unique venues for incentive travel as well. Whether it is a conference for 5000 people, a lavish dinner in the peerless desert of Wadi Rum, a barbecue at the shores of the Dead Sea, or a reception atop a medieval castle overlooking the JordanValley, the amicable and competent people of Jordan will ensure a memorable, once in a lifetime experience.
JORDAN: Situated in the heart of the Arabian Desert, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is an oasis of stability and peace in the Middle East. From the hustle and bustle of the capital Amman to the southern desert; Jordan is awash with biblical, historical and cultural significance. Jordan’s iconic landmarks include the panoramic views from Mount Nebo; the rose-red city of Petra, which is one of the ‘new seven wonders of the world’; the therapeutic waters of the Dead Sea; Aqaba on the Red Sea and Wadi Rum – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Indian passport holders can avail of ‘Visa on Arrival’ in Jordan. For more information: www. visitjordan.com

TURN OFF AND TUNE IN TO NATURE IN NEW ZEALAND
I
n the US, the National Day of Unplugging takes place in early March (1-2 March 2019) and that should apply around the world, in New Zealand, any day or week of the year is good. So, turn off your mobile roaming and immerse yourself in perfect silence at one of these spectacular off-the-grid locales. The most comfortable way to be fully immersed in nature, a PurePod is
pretty special and pretty much unique to New Zealand at this stage. The “pods” are made entirely from glass, and this includes floors and ceilings. While they don’t have television or internet coverage, they do feature the most advanced environmentally friendly tech available for the generation of power and disposal of waste. PurePods are integrated into the breath-taking natural environments they inhabit (there are six locations around the Christchurch region) and feature views of sea, mountains, rivers and the glorious southern night sky. 36
Tourism India February 2019
All the PurePods are accessible by car from Christchurch and two of them are close to Kaikoura. Private parking is provided at each location, then visitors walk through beautiful landscape to access their pod. The best time to visit is spring and autumn when the countryside is at its prettiest. Forget air pollution: the pristine Mackenzie Country offers unimpeded views of the glorious southern night
sky. SkyScape at Omahau Hill Station offers visitors the opportunity to soak up the stars in a SkyBed – a recessed, ground-level bed underneath a roof of glass. Meanwhile, outside there’s a 2m-long bath crafted from steel and cedar and fed by a nearby fresh water spring. Enjoy the scrub- and tussock-strewn landscape by day, and when darkness falls, watch the universe unfold in all its star-studded glory. SkyScape is a 10-minute drive from Twizel, two hours from Wanaka, or three-and-a-half hours from Christchurch. It’s located on the
2428ha farm of Michael and Elaine Lindsay, who run sheep and cattle across its rolling hills. As the location is isolated, you never have to worry about the crowds. Glamp it up For some, camping can be a trial (insects, wet weather, minimal facilities) but glamping offers all of the fun with none of the “ew” factor. Clifton Glamping in Hawke’s Bay features such home comforts as hot water, fine linen on a king-sized bed and even an outdoor bath. The “glamp site” overlooks a beautiful, slow-flowing river and you get the feeling you’re a million miles away from civilization. Located a short (20 minutes) drive from Napier or Hastings, the Clifton Glamping site is conveniently situated for travellers. Hawke’s Bay is renowned for its wineries, and there’s a wealth of outdoor activities such as cycling and hiking for those who want to get a little active and stir themselves away from pure unadulterated bliss. Lap up the luxury Few things are as de-stressing as the sound of water lapping against the side of a luxury launch. The Fiordland Jewel takes this to a whole new level of luxe – think on-board helipad, hot tubs and fine-dining cuisine. The five-star catamaran cruises the Milford Sound and further reaches of Fiordland, offering a completely off-the-grid experience combined with blissful helpings of pure comfort. The Fiordland Jewel only takes 20 people a night, so it pays to book early. The Jewel offers overnight and private charters. Transfers are available from Queenstown and Te Anau. Wild at heart Hours from anywhere, Wilderness Lodge is situated on the banks of Lake Moeraki, in the heart of the South Island’s World Heritage-listed Te Wahipounamu area. It’s wilderness
accommodation with all the comforts you require, including spa baths and private decks. You can walk on the beach, soak up the stillness of the lake, or enjoy guided tours of the ancient forests that surround the site. There’s also a restaurant on site with an outlook as good as the food. A bus from Queenstown and the southern glaciers stops at the lodge daily. Otherwise drive yourself to Wilderness Lodge – it’s located on State Highway 6, two-and-a-half hours north of Wanaka. The weather can be wild in these parts - think rainforest and temperate temperatures year-round but this is part of the place’s charm. Spring is a good time for wildlife activity and the lodge offers guided tours to secret places where, apart from the wildlife, there’s no one else in sight. Flying high With no road access but by aerial cable car or river boat, The Flying Fox near Whanganui is ideal for unplugging. Located on the mighty Whanganui River, there are a range of accommodation options to suit all tastes. The James K Cottage named after New Zealand’s best-known poet, the quirky Gypsy Cart, and some campsites. The Whanganui River is a mystical and magical place, rich in both Māori and European history, and

it’s extremely meditative to watch the deep green waters flow by. There’s not much else to do here apart from walk through the bush and soak up the scenery, but that’s the joy of the place. There is no direct car access to The Flying Fox, so you will need to decide whether you want to get there by cable car or jet boat. However, both of these options are located within 30 minutes’ drive from Whanganui. Island life Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf is a hidden gem just 30 minutes by plane from Auckland. Mount St Paul Estate is set in more than 40ha of pristine native bush and features a
range of accommodation options and excellent food. The island has bush, beach, hot springs and mountains, and also offers great surf. All the rooms on the estate have central heating, plus elevated views over the nearby sea. Great Barrier Island also happens to be New Zealand’s newest Dark Sky Sanctuary so expect sublime night time panoramas. Fly from Auckland Airport’s domestic terminal or take the Sealink Ferry from its downtown wharf to the island. The owners of the lodge are able to arrange transfers from the airport and the island wharf to the estate.
