Editor’s note
Fix the roof while the sun shines
T
he global economy is in a sweet spot due to a cyclical upswing and mostly good monetary and fiscal policies in across the nations and around the world. More than 120 countries are positioned for growth. All major developed and developing economies are doing well and let’s celebrate that,” said Christine Lagarde, Managing Director, IMF, Washington DC, at Davos during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2018. However, she cautioned that the good news is not across the board and one-fifth of emerging and developing countries are set to see a decline in per capita GDP for a combination of reasons. The upturn in economic growth prospects for the global economy is an opportunity to “fix the roof while the sun shines” and to shift the recovery from a cyclical to structural one. The uptick provides policymakers with an opportunity to improve policies to make economies more resilient and ensure a different distribution of the benefits of growth to address growing inequality. Fortunately India also had shown the growth trajectory in most of the spheres including Tourism and manufacturing. The 2018 Global Economics Prospect (GEP) released by the World Bank in January projects India’s GDP growth to pick up to 7.3% in 2018-19 and to 7.5% for the next two years. In comparison, the figure for the second quarter of the last financial year (July-September 2017) was 6.3%, up from the three-year low of 5.7% in the first quarter. The report pegs overall economic growth for 2017 at 6.7%, despite initial setbacks from demonetisation and introduction of the GST. According to the GEP, India’s future is looking good on several fronts. Strong private consumption and services are expected to continue to support economic
activity. Private investment is expected to revive as the corporate sector adjusts to the GST, which over the medium term is expected to benefit economic activity and fiscal sustainability by reducing the cost of complying with multiple state tax systems, drawing informal activity into the formal sector, and expanding the tax base. Moreover, the recent recapitalization package for public sector banks announced by the government is expected to help resolve banking sector balance sheets, support credit to the private sector, and lift investment, while the global trade recovery is expected to lift exports. A “different India” is ready to benefit from a strong global economic recovery after a series of reforms including demonetisation, goods and services tax, easing of regulations and procedures, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said. “India today is one of the most open, globally integrated economy. We are moving up the ease of doing business ranking every year,” he said adding that the massive steps taken by the Indian government includes using new digital technologies for governance and making them benefit the people. Future holds an important direction as far as India is concerned. India Tourism is going through a one of the best tourism season and the coming offseason trends has also shows positive growth. Overall the situation is good for future prospects, but the natural and manmade risks are very high as per the World Economic Forum’s Global Risk Report 2018. So prepare for any eventuality and let start to fix the roof while the sun shines. Ravisankar KV Editor

International Tourism Results: the highest in seven years 2017 was characterised by sustained growth in many destinations and a firm recovery in those that suffered decreases in previous years.
A
s per the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer it is estimated that international tourist arrivals (overnight visitors) worldwide increased 7% in 2017 to reach a total of 1,322 million, which is above the sustained and consistent trend of 4% or higher growth since 2010 and represents the strongest results in seven years. This strong momentum is expected to continue in 2018 at a rate of 4%-5%. Led by Mediterranean destinations, Europe recorded extraordinary results with 8% more international arrivals than in 2016. Africa consolidated its 2016 rebound with an 8% increase. Asia and the Pacific recorded 6% growth, the Middle East 5% and the Americas 3%. 2017 was characterised by sustained growth in many destinations and a firm recovery in those that suffered decreases in previous years. Results were partly shaped by the global economic upswing and the robust outbound demand from many traditional and emerging source markets, particularly a rebound in tourism spending from Brazil and the Russian Federation after a few years of declines. “International travel continues to grow strongly, consolidating the tourism sector as a key driver in economic development. Growth expected to continue
This strong impetus is expected to continue in 2018, though at a more sustainable pace after eight years of steady expansion following the 2009 economic and financial crisis. Based on current trends, economic prospects and the outlook by the UNWTO Panel of Experts, UNWTO projects international tourist arrivals worldwide to grow at a rate of 4%-5% in 2018, which is above the 3.8% average increase projected for the period 2010-2020 in their Tourism Towards 2030 long-term forecast. Europe and the Americas are both expected to grow by 3.5%-4.5%, Asia and the Pacific by 5%-6%, Africa by 5%-7% and the Middle East by 4%6%.

hether you are a travel enthusiast or a person form the tourism sector, then the union budget for 2018-19 has certain important components for you to record. With prime attention on agriculture, the Finance Minister Mr. Arun Jaitley presented the union budget for 2018-19 pointing out India has the fastest growing economy in the world. Commenting on the budget allocation on tourism sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that developing tourism, particularly in India’s remote north-eastern states, is one of his top priorities. The Union Budget 2018-19 allocated an amount of Rs 2,150 crore to the Ministry of Tourism, which is a 21 per cent jump from the current fiscal. Government would also develop 10 popular tourist destinations into iconic and model destinations, involving infrastructure and skill development, development of technology, and attracting private investment in branding and marketing, which would again boost the sector. “The budget with a holistic development outlay showcases the government’s strong commitment to build India as a robust tourism economy,” says Simon Fiquet, General Manager, Southeast Asia and India, Expedia. ourism is identified as one among the selected few major economic activities by the Government of India. Hence much importance is given to the tourism sector by the Government. The Union Budget 2018-19 reflects this priority for the tourism sector. There are allocations for developing 11 major iconic tourism destinations locatedin different states. I am glad that Kumarakam in Kerala is also included among them. There is an allocation of Rs. 1100 crore for the project ‘SwadeshDarshan Scheme’ connecting tourism locations and creating circuits. There are also allocations of Rs. 70 crore for infrastructure development, and also Rs. 180 crore for developing pilgrimage destinations in the name ‘Pilgrimage Rejuvenations and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive’ (PRASHAD) Scheme. E-visa procedures are being made easier to attract more foreign tourists. The Union Budget also has made provisions for effective promotions of seaplane services in the country. The Government has also announced the new ‘NABH Nirman’ for expanding airport capacity in the country more than fivefold to handle an anticipated traffic of one billion trips a year. The number of airports in India is expected to be increased from the present 125 numbers. Government has also increased allocations for the regional connectivity scheme by air ‘UDAN’. In the last 3 years
the domestic air passenger traffic grew at 18% per annum and the airline companies in India have placed orders for more than 900 aircrafts. The regional connectivity scheme of UDAN will connect 56 unserved airports and 31 unserved helipads across the country. Operations have already started at 16 such airports. Total allocation in the civil aviation in the budget was Rs. 6602.86 crore. Air India has been allotted Rs. 650 Crore to tide over their financial needs. There are schemes to upgrade the railways in terms of safety and quality which would indirectly support travel and tourism in India. Redevelopment of 600 major railway stations is being taken up by Indian Railway Station Development Co Ltd. All railway stations and trains will be progressively provided with Wi-Fi. CCTVs will be provided at all stations and on trains to enhance security. The Ministry has embarked on an Incredible India 2.0 version of the campaign shifting from the present generic promotion to market specific promotional plans and product specific campaigns with focus on digital presence and social media. It is very encouraging to the tourism industry that now on the Incredible India Campaign will also promote niche products like Heritage Tourism, Adventure Tourism, Cruise Tourism, Rural Tourism, Wellness and Medical Tourism, MICE, Golf, etc.

Within these projects, integrated development of tourist circuits has been allocated Rs 1,100 crore, up from Rs 950 crore in the current fiscal. hile the Union Budget 2018 did not directly address several of the demands being made by the travel and tourism industry, it addressed a relatable need that acts as a medium for growth of the infrastructure sector. The budget emphasized on the government’s vision to make 10 prominent tourist sites iconic tourist destinations, with an amalgamation of private funding, marketing and branding giving a much-needed boost to domestic tourism. We are encouraged to know the focus on rural India. Right from boosting the Smart Cities programme to laying down a blueprint for better connectivity through the UDAN scheme. Modernizing the Railway infrastructure, introducing more airports to connect various parts of the country are initiatives that will contribute towards sustainable growth within the sector. We expected tour operators 14

to be given an option to pay the GST at 12% with full input tax credit in addition to existing rate at 5% without Input Tax Credit, Tax exemption benefit extended to the NRI Holiday business and clarification on the flexibility of transfer and grant of GST credit on hotels. We were also hoping for a rationalization on taxes to benefit those involved in promoting and delivering travel & tourism services. Also I am pleased that the Finance Minister has recognized our experiment with Seaplanes and its viability in promoting tourism and emergency medical care. This project has the potential to convert every river into a runway and every pond into an airport thus providing hundreds of thousands of airports to the country. Being the country’s largest regional operator, SpiceJet, has played a leading role in this initiative which will connect 56 unserved airports and 31 unserved helipads in the next six months. SpiceJet was the only airline that did not seek viability gap funding from the government in UDAN-I thus setting an example for others.

he government’s emphasis on connecting 56 unserved airports and 31 unserved helipads under UDAN, will definitely bring more Tier 2 and Tier 3 destinations on the aviation map and encourage more people to travel by air. Connectivity to rural parts of India is still a major barrier in promoting concepts like Rural tourism, Adventure tourism and Eco-tourism, however, with more airports being covered under this scheme, regional connectivity will increase as well as enhance the overall travel experience. Taj Hotels aims to spur growth, strengthen market leadership Indian Hotels will focus on Taj, Vivanta and Ginger brands Major change in brand architecture
In a major change in its brand architecture which was tuned towards a single Taj brand by Mr. Rakesh Sarna, previous MD & CEO, the company has decided for a multi-brand strategy in line with the one which was unveiled by Mr. Raymond Bickson, former MD and Mr. RK Krishnakumar, Vice Chairman of TATA Group nearly a decade ago.
I
ndian Hotels Company Ltd, promoters of India’s iconic hospitality brand Taj Hotels has announced a comprehensive fiveyear business strategy, targeting an improved Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBIDTA) margin by 800 bps, from 17% now to 25% by 2022. The company with $1.2 billion in revenue, has announced plans to improve its EBITDA margin by increasing revenue and keeping tight control on costs and decides to monetize non-core assets including flats & land. Under this strategy, the company will work towards deepening guest experience, strengthening 18

market leadership and achieving transformative growth leading to greater profitability and market leadership in each of the IHCL relative market segments. Indian Hotels has also decided to retain its old structure and push for growth across segments, including mid-scale and economy hotels, reversing an earlier decision to club all premium properties under the Taj luxury brand and exit sub-brands such as Vivanta. Articulating the plan, Mr. Puneet Chhatwal, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Indian Hotels Company Limited, outlined a crisp overview of the vision, created with an eye towards maximizing

stakeholder value over the next five years. The plan aims to build on the century-old legacy of IHCL and further strengthen its position by operating best in class portfolio of brands in India and select overseas destinations. “Our greatest opportunities reside at the very heart of our brand, our people, authentic guest experiences and unmatched value. Our strategy is three pronged: Restructure, Reengineer and Re-imagine our portfolio to achieve eight percent point EBIDTA margin improvement. This will be driven by a deep commitment to service excellence as well as implementation of revenue and profit-driving initiatives,” Puneet Chhatwal added. “India is not a country where one size fits all... We cannot say we want to grow our margin and profit, and focus on just one brand,” said Puneet Chhatwal at a media briefing. “The majority of the growth in the last 10 years and going forward in the domestic market is coming from midscale, upscale and the economy segment. So, we cannot be playing in isolation,” he said . Chhatwal said the while company will focus on three brands -- Taj, Vivanta and Ginger -- it is still considering exiting some others such as Gateway and President. The move is a departure from
the luxury-focused mono-brand Taj strategy envisioned by his predecessor Rakesh Sarna. The previous plan was to move brands like Vivanta and Gateway to a single luxury focused identity—the Taj. “Most of the high growth is in midscale, upscale and budget segments. Luxury dominates our portfolio, but Ginger is growing rapidly. We expect the majority of the growth to come from there. Our palaces safaris will operate with only the Taj luxury brand, leisure will have Taj and
Be the most iconic and profitable hospitality company Vivanta and business will have Taj, Vivanta and Ginger.” Key tenets of the plan include unlocking value from efficiencies in scale and simplifying the holding structure for greater profitability. IHCL will be at the forefront of change in the hospitality industry as it goes about re-engineering processes, embracing technology and building people capability to deliver enhanced and personalized customer experiences. It would be open to building alliances with the other companies in “relevant segments” to increase revenues. “We think, in a global world, we will not be able to do everything on our own. We will be building alliances... may be with a rental rental (company) or shopping company or within the Taj group...that’s like building alliances both internally as well as external partners to leverage each other,” he said. Chhatwal added that IHCL plans to monetise some of its real estate assets including land banks, apartments owned by the company and other non performing assets. “We have a lot of land banks... and many such opportunities where we can monetise and develop them. Island adventures
The in-house Naturalist will help navigate the exotic island with experiences ranging from snorkelling, scuba diving and night time kayaking through the mangroves with its fascinating nocturnal world of bioluminescence-phytoplankton.
Getting there
Located 69 km from Port Blair’s Veer Savarkar International Airport, Radhanagar beach on Havelock Island is accessible by air and a 150-minute ferry ride followed by a 30 minute drive to the resort. The expanded
network of flights from Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad make it easy to reach from key cities across India.
Night kayaking
A mangrove safari is de rigueur in the Andamans. At the Taj Exotica Resort and Spa, we take this adventure to the next level by opening up a scintillating new dimension to the mangroves by moonlight. Post-sunset, guests are driven to the jetty, where experienced local kayakers guide you into lifejackets and row in pairs towards the unique aquatic ecosystem of tangled roots half submerged in the water. While providing a barrier against storms and large waves, the mangroves are a breeding ground for many species, including brightlycoloured fiddler crabs, shy mud skippers, blue-eyed Andaman bulbuls, parakeets, kingfishers, white bellied sea eagles, night jars and blood clams. The most fascinating aspect of night kayaking is the phenomenon
of bioluminescence. As you plunge your paddle into the water or run your hand through it, hundreds of tiny, glowing, star-like phytoplankton - aquatic organisms that provide food for whales – light up the calm, dark water. With our expert guides leading you into the narrow channels and hidden nooks in the mangroves, this delightful experience tops any itinerary on the island.
Game fishing
The Andamans is a virgin, worldclass destination for game fishing and angling with an environmentalfriendly catch-and-release policy. We give our guests a head start with laidback to adrenaline-pumping itineraries for everyone from passionate anglers to rookies. Getting into well-equipped boats at the Havelock Island jetty, the crew begins setting up fishing rods, helping you get comfortable with them and begin trolling within 10 minutes of leaving the shore. Moving between Peel Island and Nicholson Island, you can start jigging and popping for huge Red Snappers, a variety of Groupers, Coral Trout, Swordfish, Spanish Mackerel, Trevally, Sailfish, Wahoo, Marlin, Dogtooth Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna and Bonito. The fishing season runs from October through May, but you can snare GT’s and doggies all year round. Longer trips – especially to Barren Island, the only active volcano in South Asia, 98 kms from Havelock – can be organized on request.
Snorkelling and scuba diving
The crystal clear turquoise waters of the Andaman’s are home to one of the richest coral reef ecosystems in the world, where over 135 marine species thrive, thanks to an unusually low diving impact. The best diving sites on the archipelago are concentrated on Havelock Island, from Minerva Ledge with a massive, thick-lipped Napoleon Wrasse in residence, to the gently sloping Neil’s Cove and the famous Johnny’s Gorge where
massive Manta Rays, coral-chomping Humpback Parrotfish, flamboyant Lionfish, Stingrays and Blue Stripped Snappers abound, divers are always assured of left mesmerizing underwater vistas. For wreck diving fans, the MV Mars site near Havelock is a relaxed 15 meter dive through the remains of a 2006 boat wreck. The resort facilitates itineraries for beginners to professionals – including Bubblemaker sessions for young children - to experience the most magical moments that the island has to offer.

Ajay Singh named ‘EY Entrepreneur of the year Chairman and Managing Director of SpiceJet named ‘Indian Entrepreneur of the Year 2017 for Business Transformation’
S
piceJet Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh — widely acknowledged as a turnaround specialist — was named ‘Indian Entrepreneur of the Year 2017 for Business Transformation’ by Ernst & Young (EY), the leading consulting firm, at a grand awards banquet held in Mumbai on 15th February 2018. Ajay Singh has scripted one of the most remarkable turnaround stories of recent times. SpiceJet was on the verge of shutting down in December 2014, having cancelled hundreds of flights, when Mr. Singh stepped in and gave it a new lease of life. From staring at an imminent closure to achieving 12 quarters of profit and a load factor of over 90% every month for 33 months in a row (a global aviation record), SpiceJet’s turnaround story under the leadership of Ajay Singh, has been one which probably has no parallel in the aviation world today. The SpiceJet stock has emerged as world’s best-performing aviation stock.
EY Entrepreneur of the Year is the world’s most prestigious business award for entrepreneurs. The unique award makes a difference through the way it encourages entrepreneurial activity among those with potential, and recognizes the contribution of people who inspire others with their vision, leadership and achievement.
“I feel humbled and honoured to receive this award, which is a testament of the hard work put in by Team SpiceJet. We have achieved what very few airlines in the world have managed and this has been a magnificent journey. This award belongs to each and every SpiceJetter who has worked with such great
passion and dedication in the last three years,” said Ajay Singh, CMD, SpiceJet. A distinguished nine-member independent Jury Panel, led by Dilip Shanghvi, Managing Director, Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries, selected the finalists. The winners were carefully handpicked from a pool of 250+ outstanding nominations. The finalists were felicitated in Mumbai. Under Mr. Singh, SpiceJet — India’s second biggest budget carrier —today flies more than 400 daily flights. With the grand scheme of making every Indian fly, he has been on a constant pursuit to unlock the growth potential of Tier II and Tier III towns in the country. Building the country’s regional air connectivity, backing PM Narendra Modi’s UDAN scheme, exploring opportunities for seaplane operations, Mr. Singh’s novel and outof-the-box ideas have not just earned him global recognition but he is today the face of the Indian aviation industry. These trips are bound to leave you spellbound, shocked, and asking for more. Srinagar to Leh(419 km) and Manali to Leh(470 km) are considered the two best biking routes with good roads and scenic vistas. Depending on factors like the route taken, the weather conditions, and your time, the biking trip would take 10-15 days. This will give you enough time to acclimatize yourself to the vagaries of nature.

Kenya's services sector, which contributes 61% of GDP, is dominated by tourism. The tourism sector has exhibited steady growth in most years since independence and by the late 1980s had become the country's principal source of foreign exchange. Tourists, the largest number being from Germany and the United Kingdom, are attracted mainly to the coastal beaches and the game reserves, notably, the expansive East and Tsavo West National Park 20,808
square kilometres (8,034 sq mi) in the southeast. Tourism has seen a substantial revival over the past several years and is the major contributor to the pick-up in the country's economic growth. Tourism is now Kenya's largest foreign exchange earning sector, followed by flowers, tea, and coffee. Presently, there are also numerous shopping malls in Kenya. t’s home to the San Francisco Giants from April to October every year, but you can take a tour inside AT&T Park any time for a “player’s eye view.” You’ll have access to the infield warning track, the dugout, batting cages, the visitors’ clubhouse, the press box and a luxury suite. WI
THEME PARK
E
xperience thrill rides and attractions at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, North America’s only theme park
featuring wildlife, marine life and thrilling rides. It’s an incredible entertainment experience for the whole family, with one-of-a-kind adventures across three worlds.
ALCATRAZ
L
ocated one-and-a-half miles from Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz is one of the city’s most popular attractions. A visit to the island includes a tour of the cell house where visitors can see where the prisoners lived. Although the last inmates were transferred off the island in 1963, the main prison block with its steel bars, claustrophobic cells, mess hall, and library are still structurally intact.
SUTRO BATHSv
F
or decades, the Sutro Baths were an iconic part of San Francisco and defined the grand vision that prominent San Franciscans had for their burgeoning city. If you’re planning a visit to San Francisco’s Richmond District, it’s worth visiting the ruins of
the Sutro Baths, both for their breathtaking views and rich history. Here’s how to make the most out of your trip there.

FARMERS’ MARKETS
E
very day of the week, there is a farmers’ market happening somewhere in the city. With fresh produce year-round and plenty of farms nearby, it’s literally farm-to-table every day. That’s something not every destination can lay claim to (we’re looking at you Midwest and East Coast). While it would be impossible to feature all of them (many are small neighborhood markets), here are some of our favorites.
DOLORES PARK
D
olores Park is always packed with San Franciscans old and new. From the southwest corner, you can get a heartbreaking view of downtown San Francisco, with the Bay behind the skyline and palm tree-lined Dolores Street stretching out in front of you like a California dream.
San Francisco is located on the West Coast of the United States at the north end of the San Francisco Peninsula and includes significant stretches of the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay within its boundaries. Several picturesque islands—Alcatraz, Treasure Island and the adjacent Yerba Buena Island, and small portions of Alameda Island, Red Rock Island, and Angel Island—are part of the city.
