CULTURAL PROMOTION AND EXCHANGES OF INTERNATIONAL CO-OPERATION

T

oday Tourism has marked its significance in both social and economic growth and International Tourism is a major concern for all the governments across the globe. As we know from history, Travel has continued to grow since the men start to begin to travels long distances in search of food and water and often for clothes as a part of his survival. The purpose of Travel has changed from the immediate necessity of survival to the reasons like trade, economic gain, war, migration and other kinds of motives. Date back million years climate changes made the people leave their homes to seek refuge elsewhere which was resulted in the invention of the wheel, which made travel possible followed by the invention of money by the Sumerians (Babylonia) that led to the development of trade and the beginning of a new era. Perhaps The Phoenicians were the first real travelers in the modern sense as they went from place to place as travelers and traders. The 3,500 years old Mohenjo-Daro civilization in India is also at the same time and the trade and travel developed in India. While digging through the history, traditions of travel in India are the oldest in the world with a motive of religion and trade. For a purpose of meditation and to set up Ashrams the great Indian sages traveled to

the Himalayas in the North and the jungles of the South. Travel of course played an important role in the development of civilizations. The result of the growth of Travel all over the world accumulates as Tourism and became a twentiethcentury phenomenon. According to Historians England was the birthplace of mass tourism as a result of the rise of middle-class travel in the period of Industrial Revolution and the creation and development of jet aircraft Industry in the 1950s following the Second World War caused the growth of international Travel which was led to this new Industry, Tourism. Even though one of the largest segments of the service industry, in some countries travel and tourism is unrecognized as an entity. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (1992), ‘Travel and Tourism’ is the largest industry in the world on virtually any economic measures including; gross output, value added, capital investment, employment, and tax contribution. Because of problems of definition which directly affect statistical measurement, it is not possible with any degree of certainty to provide precise, valid or reliable data about the extent of world-wide tourism participation or its economic impact. In many cases, similar difficulties

arise when attempts are made to measure domestic tourism. Since travel industry includes hotels, motels, and other accommodation facilities, restaurants, gift shops, transportation services, food services, amusements parks leisure facilities and a large number of other enterprises in which many businesses serve local residents impacted by overlooked or underestimated the major problems of the travel and tourism industry. This problem has made it difficult for the industry to develop any type of reliable or credible tourism information base in order to estimate the contribution it makes to regional, national and global economies. Travel in different countries fosters a better rapport between people of various stocks. Personal international contacts have always been an important way of spreading ideas about other culture. Thus tourism is an important means of promoting cultural exchanges and international co-operation The contribution of the Tourism Industry to the improvement of social and political understanding. Is commendable apart from the foreign exchange and employment generation.

INTERNATIONAL TOURIST ARRIVALS REACH 1.4 BILLION TWO YEARS AHEAD OF FORECASTS FOR 2019, UNWTO FORECASTS A 3-4% INCREASE

Tourism India January 2019

T

he latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer marks International tourist arrivals increased 6% to 1.4 billion in 2018. In relative terms, the Middle East (+10%), Africa (+7%), Asia and the Pacific and Europe (both at +6%) led growth in 2018. Arrivals to the Americas were below the world average (+3%). “The growth of tourism in recent years confirms that the sector is today one of the most powerful drivers of economic growth and development. It is our responsibility to manage it in a sustainable manner and translate this expansion into real benefits for all countries, and particularly, to all local communities, creating opportunities for jobs and entrepreneurship and leaving no one behind” said UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili. “This is why UNWTO is focussing

2019 on education, skills and job creation.”, he added. UNWTO’s long-term forecast published in 2010 predicted the 1.4 billion mark of international tourist arrivals for 2020. Yet stronger economic growth, more affordable air travel, technological changes, new businesses models and greater visa facilitation around the word have accelerated growth in recent years. International tourist arrivals in Europe reached 713 million in 2018, a notable 6% increase over an exceptionally strong 2017. Growth was driven by Southern and Mediterranean Europe (+7%), Central and Eastern Europe (+6%) and Western Europe (+6%). Results in Northern Europe were flat due to the weakness of arrivals to the United Kingdom. Asia and the Pacific (+6%) recorded 343 million international tourist arrivals in 2018. Arrivals in South-East Asia grew 7%, followed by North-East Asia (+6%) and South Asia (+5%). Oceania showed more moderate growth at +3%. The Americas (+3%) welcomed 217 million international arrivals in 2018, with mixed results across destinations. Growth was led by North America (+4%), and followed by South America (+3%), while Central America and the Caribbean (both -2%) reached very mixed results, the latter reflecting the impact of the September 2017 hurricanes Irma and Maria. Data from Africa points to a 7% increase in 2018 (North Africa at +10% and Sub-Saharan +6%), reaching an estimated 67 million arrivals. The Middle East (+10%) showed solid results last year consolidating its 2017 recovery, with international tourist arrivals reaching 64 million. Growth expected to return to historical trends in 2019 Based on current trends, economic prospects and the UNWTO Confidence

2018 TOTALLED 1.4 BILLION INTERNATIONAL TOURIST ARRIVALS (+6%), CONSOLIDATING 2017 STRONG RESULTS AND PROVING TO BE THE SECOND STRONGEST YEAR SINCE 2010 Index, UNWTO forecasts international arrivals to grow 3% to 4% next year, more in line with historic growth trends. The stability of fuel prices tends to translate into affordable air travel while air connectivity continues to improve in many destinations, facilitating the diversification of source markets. Trends also show strong outbound travel from emerging markets, especially India and Russia but also from smaller Asian and Arab source markets. At the same time, the global economic slowdown, the uncertainty related to the Brexit, as well as geopolitical and trade tensions may

prompt a “wait and see” attitude among investors and travellers. Overall, 2019 is expected to see the consolidation among consumers of emerging trends such as the quest for ‘travel to change and to show’, ‘the pursuit of healthy options’ such as walking, wellness and sports tourism, ‘multigenerational travel’ as a result of demographic changes and more responsible travel. “Digitalisation, new business models, more affordable travel and societal changes are expected to continue shaping our sector, so both destination and companies need to adapt if they want to remain competitive”, added Pololikashvili.

SMILING NORTH MALABAR -

AN EXPERIENTIAL TOUR

K

erala is not only about the beaches of Kovalam or the hills of Munnar or the backwaters of Alappuzha; it is also about the rich cultural ethos and the natural wonders of North Malabar. North Malabar is an un-spoilt terrain, with pristine waterfalls, verdant woods and picture-perfect villages. The wonders explored by the fourday SMiLE Ambassadors Tour for tour operators conducted by the Bekal Resorts Development Corporation (BRDC) in the first week of December 2018 began with the unfolding of a marvelous performance of traditional puppetry of Kasaragod, Yakshagana Bommayattam. Against a dark backdrop, the tiny wooden dolls in 16

vibrant costumes and headgears played out the stories of the great Indian epics. The aesthetic odyssey continued with the witnessing of a flamboyant performance of Kalaripayattu at the Bekal Fort beach. With intricate techniques, flexibility of body and hand

movements, the performance grabbed the interest of audience. The cool breeze and the setting sun added more charm to the whole arena. One main attraction of the expedition was a journey to a farm house situated in a small village awash with huge leafy trees, majestic coconut palms and slender arecanut trees. An array of sumptuous regional delicacies made from lemon grass, centella (a medicinal plant), tender coconut, jaggery sweet, Manjal Ada (steamed cake wrapped in Turmeric leaf) and so forth welcomed the guests. Exploring Suranga was truly exciting. Suranga is a traditional water harvesting system which is similar to a horizontal well or cave excavated in

Claustrophobes will be advised to maintain a safe distance but they will yet be able to appreciate the ingenuity of the unlettered and ancient inhabitants of this area. Another interesting destination was a tribal colony called ‘Pattala’ situated at Banam near Nileshwaram where Malavettuvar tribe received the guests with a tribal dance - Mangalam Kali. Little girls in traditional attires excitedly showcased a charming performance of what was once a nuptial dance. The zig-zag roads then led to

he Blue Mountains, spectacular sunrises, lush greenery delicately balanced with human existence forming the most perfect embroidered image hand crafted by the creator of this universe. The scenery becomes the protagonist of the most telling tale of an extraordinary test of human endurance and passion. Mountain Biking Himalaya is not an event but an experience. As the challenge pedals into its 15th year of survival through the toughest terrains, MTB Himalaya volunteers to ride further, higher up 22

as MTB Himalaya. Yes, the challenge for next edition is to ride through and explore the depths and mysteries of the majestic Himalayas. The stunning scenery of Shimla, Rohru, Narkanda, Chanshal Valley along with the strenuous cycling expedition make MTB Himalaya an enduring experience. The Himalayas epitomize a people’s civilisational Identity that goes back to the dawn of history. Formed as a result of a continental collision, emphasised by the fact that once there used to be sedimentary rocks which with the passage of time under high pressure and temperature have metamorphosed

to the present day meta-sedimentary rocks which are still active in nature. From the famous silk route to the present day urbanisation, they have a lot of relevance dating back to the time they served as a guard from various invasions and now to a meeting ground for different races, culture, and religion. Considered to be one of the toughest races in the world, Hero MTB Himalaya is not for the faint hearted. A race that takes the riders through the untouched parts of the Himalayas, bustling towns and villages, across streams – all set amidst the beauty of the mighty Himalayas. With a total elevation gain of almost 50,000 feet in the previous edition, even the most experienced riders found the altitude challenging. The flag off the MTB Himalaya 2019 will take place on World Tourism day, September 27th, which India is the host country for 2019 celebrations. The cyclist will finish their pedaling on October 5, 2019. Mountain biking is a tough sport to play. The sport made it’s way into the Olympics 20 years ago, back in 1996. Physically demanding and technically challenging, cycling off-road over rough terrain requires presence of mind and muscle. Riding several hundred kilometers in a day over the rough terrain that the sport commands is certainly not cushy. The mighty Himalayas set a perfect stage for a sport like this. Cradled in the lap of Mother Nature, the mountain ranges offer an ideal territory for a fanatical mountain biker. Mr Mohit Sood (President, Himalayan Adventure Sport & Tourism Promotion Association) had participated in car rallies himself and after working on the production side of a few, he decided to set up an organisation of his own. unsets in Morocco are a whole different experience compared to anywhere else in the world, Morrocco, the country overlooks the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Each city of Morocco has its own distinct color scheme & characteristics, which we can never experience in anywhere in the world. White Rabat, the capital city, Red hues in Marrakesh- the historic city to the gentle Lilacs in Casablanca- the commercial hub and sapphire blues in Chefchaouen a city in the Rif Mountains of northwest Morocco. Even the taxis of each city has their own colors & features. Marrakesh doesn’t sound like a special city. Morocco’s capital city (that’s Rabat). It’s not the country’s largest metropolis (that’s Casablanca). It’s not even the African nation’s oldest city (that’s Fes). But Marrakech triumphs over other Moroccan cities as the unofficial cultural center thanks to the winding alleys of its vast medina, contrasted with the modern malls and restaurants of the Nouvelle Ville, juxtaposed yet again with the luxurious palm tree-lined resorts and villas of its Palmeraie district. Marrakech is one of the most beautiful cities that we know; comparable only to Baghdad. It is large and well built, palaces, magnificent mosques whose chief, called the Mosque of the Booksellers (kutubiyin) presents the highest minaret from which one can see the city in its entirety to the snowy mountains. “ described Ibn Battuta, even after seven centuries, the description of the poet still seems topical in the case of Marrakesh. ENDANGERED PENGUINS IN ONESIES AND SURVIVAL OF THE BEST DRESSED PENGUIN PLACE IS ONE OF THE OTAGO PENINSULA'S BEST LOVED WILDLIFE EXPERIENCES

V

eterinary staff caring for some of the world's most endangered penguins have come up with a simple but novel solution to aid the recovery of their patients by dressing them in the practical all-in-one baby garment known as a onesie. The onesie, it seems, is a good way to prevent the penguin patients from scratching or pecking at their wounds, and thereby allowing new feathers the chance to grow. The innovative idea came about when wildlife hospital staff were faced 36

Tourism India January 2019

with treating a juvenile yellow-eyed penguin with substantial feather damage. “Just like any toddler the little one insisted on picking at his wounds, not allowing new feathers to grow,” said Dunedin Wildlife Hospital Trust chairman, Steve Walker. The baby onesies provided the perfect solution preventing the penguin from damaging itself. Walker says the penguin fashionista in question, who is known as Plucky, is now convalescing at Penguin Place wildlife centre where he is something of a sensation

with visitors lucky enough to catch a glimpse. “It seems that babies of all species need bespoke wardrobe items and this little guy is now on the mend thanks to this snappy fashion choice.” Inspired by the success of the idea, Dunedin Wildlife Hospital has put out a call to baby clothing manufacturers with the idea of creating specially designed penguin-themed onesies. Dunedin is the 'wildlife capital of New Zealand', with many rare and endangered species inhabiting the surrounding area. Before the Dunedin

Wildlife Hospital opened in early 2018, injured yellow-eyed penguins were flown to the North Island and only had a 40-50% chance of survival. That survival rate has now risen to nearly 88%. The charity is hoping that someone will take them up on the offer and donate a percentage of sales to the hospital’s operation, in addition to raising awareness of New Zealand’s unique but critically endangered wildlife. The penguins, aptly named because of their yellow eyes, breed on the east coast of New Zealand. On the Otago Peninsula, just 10 minutes’ drive from Dunedin city centre, numbers have dropped by 76 per cent since the mid1990s and face possible local extinction in the next 20 to 40 years. Ongoing conservation and protection of the species is an integral part of their survival, and the Dunedin Wildlife Hospital plays a pivotal role in this.

THERE'S A NEW DRESS CODE FOR SICK AND INJURED ENDANGERED PENGUINS AT A NEW ZEALAND WILDLIFE HOSPITAL - THE LATEST IN BABY ONESIES Penguin Place is one of the Otago Peninsula's best loved wildlife experiences where visitors can view penguins and other wildlife at close quarters. Wildlife lovers exploring Dunedin have a range of opportunities to see wildlife - both yellow-eyed and

korora little blue penguins, sea lions and fur seals, albatross and seabirds - on one of several wildlife tours on land and sea, including Penguin Place and the Royal Albatross Centre which is the world’s only mainland breeding colony of the northern royal albatross. January 2019 Tourism India
