Behavioural Economics can help the revival
ravel and Tourism products and services are the choices the traveller or consumer makes which drive the industry to date and good products always have the credit in this recovery period also. Behavioural economics can help the industry players to design unique products and services that promote sustainable choices for the customers. It compiles various insights from different disciplines and explains human behaviours and decision making factors. It reveals how distractions time constraints and multi-tasking affects our decision making it –shed light on how- many of our decisions are done fast with subconscious choice. The awareness in behavioural economics help us to understand how a person is likely to behave in a given context. As an industry of personal contacts, the decision-making and behavioural insights can help to design the promotional and sales materials, marketing strategies, staff training and overall customer experience which could impact positively the overall footprint of the sector. Behavioural science reveals that it is wrong to assume that travellers are making only common-sense decisions, without any emotional in-
fluence. With the help of Behavioural economics, the industry players can design behaviour-smart adjustments or innovations for almost any intervention with human involvement. It is applicable to small to large-scale tactics and policy programs that address complex societal challenges. This period is crucial for business leaders in all ways and to navigate through these paces the special tactics is another need.it is crucial to deal with customers who are impatient and circumstance dependent. As an industry of personal contacts, the decision-making and behavioural insights can help to design the promotional and sales materials, marketing strategies, staff training and overall customer experience which could impact positively the overall footprint of the sector. In this revival mode of the global Travel & Tourism sector, It should be better to make sustain7 ability the default option set as the expected norm. Through the incorporation of sustainability and as the most likely option a traveller can make, ore simple options should be set as choices. It is the right time to connect the tourism business agenda with the wider global strategy of the Sustainable Development Goals as a shared purpose. Rajani A Editor

sia’s Largest Travel Trade Show, ITB Asia 2021, will be an all-virtual event with the physical show postponed to 2022. Messe Berlin (Singapore) announces the complete digitalisation of ITB Asia, set to go virtual from 25 – 29 October 2021. After close observations of international developments of the COVID-19 pandemic and extensive conversations with local authorities and partners, the show organisers made the difficult decision to move the show completely virtual. The decision is made as Singapore moves to Phase 3 (heightened alert)[1] where the current limit for MICE events is set at 250 attendees. In addition, the recent surge in COVID-19 infections in the Asia-Pacific region has dimmed the positive outlook for the aviation sector, undermining previous optimism among travellers as regional countries tighten border controls and travel re12

strictions to control the spread of the virus. Therefore, after careful consideration, Messe Berlin (Singapore) concludes to postpone the physical ITB Asia to 2022 and hold this year’s event virtually. “Our team is committed in bringing a hybrid concept of ITB Asia, MICE Show Asia, and Travel Tech Asia for the travel trade industry coming October. However, global health and travel uncertainties accompanied by the rapid emergence of new COVID-19 variants had halted our efforts. The hybrid concept garnered an excellent response with over 600
confirmed exhibitors, but it has become apparent that international delegates are unable to reasonably plan their participation and travel arrangements. Therefore, with a good lead time this year we will conduct the show virtually, offering international delegates a stronger digital platform for B2B networking, learning and knowledge sharing,” said Katrina Leung, Managing Director of Messe Berlin (Singapore), the organiser of ITB Asia. ITB Asia Virtual, held virtually the second year in a row, will once again be hosted on ITB Community in Asia. The virtual event previously concluded with record-breaking participation of almost 35,000 travel professionals tuning in. Organisers are expecting an even stronger response this year with the long lead time and as countries around the world plan for tourism recovery.

COVID 19: DRAMATIC IMPACT ON INDUSTRY AROUND THE WORLD COVID-19 pandemic saw Asia-Pacific region suffer the greatest GDP losses; America’s the least hit, saved by a strong domestic recovery
A
sia Pacific was the region hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic according to the new annual Economic Trends Report from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). The report reveals the full dramatic impact of travel restrictions designed to curb COVID-19 on the global economy, individual regions, and its job losses worldwide. Asia-Pacific was the worst performing region, with the sector’s contribution to GDP dropping a damaging 53.7%, compared to the global fall of 49.1%. International visitor spending was particularly hard hit across Asia Pacific, falling by 74.4%, as many 14
JULY 2021 TOURISM INDIA
countries across the region closed their borders to inbound tourists. Domestic spending witnessed a lower but equally punishing decline of 48.1%. Travel & Tourism employment in the region fell by 18.4%, equating to a shocking 34.1 million jobs. However, despite this decline, Asia-Pacific remained the largest region for the sector’s employment in 2020, accounting for 55% (151 million) of all global Travel & Tourism jobs. Virginia Messina, Senior Vice President WTTC, said: “WTTC data has laid bare the devastating impact the pandemic has had on Travel & Tourism around the world, leaving economies battered,
millions without jobs and many more fearing for their future. “Our annual Economic Trends Report shows just how much each region has suffered at the hands of the crushing travel restrictions brought in to control the spread of COVID-19. “WTTC believes governments around the world should take advantage of their vaccine rollouts, which could significantly ease travel restrictions on travel, and help power the wider global economic recovery.” The report also revealed the European Travel & Tourism sector suffered the second biggest economic collapse last year, dropping 51.4% (€987 BN). This
significant and damaging decline was in part due to continuing mobility restrictions to curb the spread of the virus. The report showed domestic spending in Europe declined by 48.4%, offset by some intra-regional travel, however international spending fell at an even sharper rate, by 63.8%. Despite this, Europe remained the top global region for international visitor spending. However, Travel & Tourism employment still suffered across the Continent, falling 9.3%, equating to a dramatic loss of 3.6 million jobs. Travel & Tourism GDP in Africa dropped 49.2% in 2020, in line with the global average. Domestic spending declined by 42.8%, while international spending saw a much steeper contraction at 66.8%. In terms of employment losses, Africa suffered disproportionately more than other regions, falling 29.3%, representing a staggering 7.2 million jobs. Travel & Tourism’s contribution to GDP in the Middle East decreased significantly in 2020, dropping
www.tourismindia.org
51.1%. While domestic spending declined 42.8%, international spending saw a much steeper fall of 70.3%, in part driven by severe restrictions. The region, which was highly reliant on international tourism in 2019, saw international spending as a share of total Travel & Tourism spending drop from 62% of the total in 2019 to just 46% in 2020. However, domestic spending grew in share, from 38% of the total in 2019 to 54% in 2020. Despite a 42.4% decline in Travel & Tourism GDP in 2020, the Americas was the least affected major region globally. As a result, it remained the largest region in terms of its economic importance, accounting for 35% of global direct Travel & Tourism GDP. While domestic spending dropped by 38.9%, international spending saw a significantly sharper decline of 72.1% due to severe travel restrictions on inbound visitors. The Caribbean, which is as a region highly reliant upon international visitors, was the worst affected ‘sub-region’ globally. Its Travel & Tourism GDP fell 58% last year, from 14.1% of its total economy in 2019, to just 6.4% in 2020. 15 The WTTC Economic T r e n d s R e p o r t shows how the Travel & Tourism s e c t o r enables s o c i o economic
development, job creation, and significant positive social impact, including providing unique opportunities to women, minorities, and youth. It suggests that the sector will pivot and adapt to ultimately return stronger post COVID-19, identifying trends already gaining traction and exploring the shifts that may be required to sustain Travel & Tourism in the future. From a demand perspective, COVID-19 is transforming traveller inclinations and behaviours toward the familiar, predictable, trusted and towards perceived ‘low risk’ destinations. According to the report, more regional holidays, with extensive research and planning, and the great outdoors, will reign in the short-term. COVID-19 is also proving to be a catalyst in the Travel & Tourism sector’s quest for innovation and the integration of new technologies such as biometrics, which would enable a more seamless traveller experience. As global Travel & Tourism starts seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and work to accelerate the resumption of safe international travel takes place, it is essential the sector rebuilds trust to travel. While the pent-up demand is significant, ever-changing travel restrictions have affected consumer confidence to book. WTTC, which has continually been at the forefront in leading the private sector in the efforts to rebuild global consumer confidence, advocates the need for an internationally coordinated, consistent, and transparent approach to enable safe travel. Having clear and coordinated health & hygiene protocols would support the sector in rebuilding traveller confidence and allow for international travel to resume and recover swiftly.

will consist mainly of matchmaking and appointments. During the actual event ITB Berlin will provide a platform for business, net-
working, content, and dialogue, and with its physical and hybrid trade show stands will create a setting for successful participation in the event. After ITB Berlin, over a period of one to two days, the virtual Business Days will round off the concept with virtual appointments and live streams. As early as February 2022, access will be available to a virtual trade show platform where exhibitors, trade visitors, and the media can make advance contact and find relevant content.
The focus of the World’s Leading Travel Trade Show will be on Saxony, the Official Partner Destination, which at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, 8 March 2022 on the eve of the event will open ITB Berlin with a festive gala at the CityCube Berlin, which will also be live-streamed. On Wednesday, 9 March, the Berlin Exhibition Grounds will open their doors to exhibitors, trade visitors, and the media, observing the latest hygiene rules and a safety concept which ITB Berlin will coordinate with the local authorities and will previously test. On Saturday, 12 and Sunday, 13 March anyone from the Berlin/Brandenburg region with a lust for travel is also invited to the display halls where they can get ideas and inspiration for their next holidays. “With ITB Berlin NOW we were able to offer the industry a sophis-
ticated alternative format during the interim in spring 2021“, said David Ruetz, head of ITB Berlin. “However, it also became clear to us all that, as we know, nothing can compare with a face-to-face meeting. It, therefore, gives us all the more pleasure to physically welcome the global travel industry back to Berlin in 2022. Our expanded virtual formats featuring live streaming and the Digital Business Days will take the show to a new level by combining the best elements of the physical and virtual world.” Anyone wishing to attend ITB but unable to be in Berlin due to travel restrictions can join ITB Berlin live during the event by booking one of the new remote hybrid trade show stands through Messe Berlin subsidiary CSG.

HEALTH & SAFETY RISKS ARE BARRIERS FOR URBAN INDIANS TO TRAVEL The report looks at global travel demand, concerns and motivations of approximately 185,000 survey respondents from 25 markets globally

ouGov’s new report throws light on the travel plans, considerations, and motivations of consumers from 25 markets globally early half of urban Indians (46%) intend to travel domestically for leisure in the next 12 months but worry about the health risks, YouGov’s “International Travel & Tourism Report 2021” reveals. Using YouGov Global Travel Profiles, the report looks at global travel demand, concerns and motivations of approximately 185,000 survey respondents from 25 markets globally. Data from Global Travel Profiles across the 25 countries where it is life found that about half of people plan to travel for a domestic holiday in the next 12 months, as of 20
JULY 2021 TOURISM INDIA
May 2021. Among urban Indians, intent to travel domestically for leisure has fallen since March, at the onset of the deadly second wave of
Coronavirus in India, and further declined in April with the enforcement of subsequent lockdowns and state-wise restrictions to curb the spread of the
virus. Demand for international travel remained consistent, albeit lower than domestic trips. While India continued to battle the second-wave of Covid whilst preparing for a possible thirdwave, the progression of vaccine programmes in other parts of the world uplifted the underlying demand for travel. In May 2021, domestic travel sentiment was the highest in European markets such as Italy, Spain, France and Denmark, as well as Asian countries like Indonesia and Thailand. On the other hand, the appetite for international holidays appears lower than domestic trips, and less than a fifth of consumers (18%) globally are planning an international vacation in the next 12 months. The United Arab Emirates and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia stand out as exceptions, with respondents planning to travel substantially more than consumers in other countries. When it comes to business travel, consumer sentiment data points to a slow demand compared to leisure travel. Respon-
dents in the APAC (14%) and MEA (18%) regions are more likely to travel for business, both domestically and internationally than consumers in Europe (6%) and North America (11%). Speaking about the whitepaper, Eva Stewart, Global Sector Head of Travel & Tourism at YouGov, said, “As the world begins to reopen Tourism, YouGov’s “International Travel & Tourism Report 2021: The road back to normality” is a vital resource to industry insiders looking to understand traveller expectations in the current climate. It draws upon data from YouGov’s DestinationIndex and Global Travel Profiles tools which are designed to give an always-on view of people’s changing attitudes to travel. “As we move into a post-COVID world, it is clear that many people are broadening their horizons and want to travel – both domestically or internationally. However, the picture is a nuanced one both between countries and within markets. It is crucial that the industry has a clear view of who is
looking to travel and where they want to go so they can cater to these consumers as effectively as possible.” When asked about the major factors preventing people from travelling, health risks emerged as the primary barrier to travel among global respondents, followed by travel restrictions (48% and 35% respectively). Data points to increased sensitivities to price (32%) in most countries too. Health risks are much of a concern in Asian countries, especially Malaysia (62%), Singapore (59%), Thailand (52%) and India (49%). While travel restrictions remain a primary obstacle for consumers in the European markets, namely the UK (62% said so in May), Germany (59%) and Norway (51%). In India, health risks is the biggest barrier preventing people from travelling (as said by 49%), followed by safety concerns (47%). 36% of urban Indians see travel restrictions as a barrier and almost a third (29%) are concerned about the travel costs.

South India. Muziris is presently nothing more than a ghost of its glorious past but still possesses the potential to thrill. Especially in a place like Muziris nothing else is instrumental due to the
absence of major tangible edifices or historical remnants in the vicinity. The great flood of AD 1341 had wiped out the then Muziris legacy, leaving behind only a handful of visible traces
for the posterity like the tip of an iceberg. Its treasures are patiently waiting to be unearthed. Muziris is situated on the banks of River Periyar near Kodugallore Town, roughly forty kilometers northwest of Cochin. In the present scenario, Muziris Tour Circuit is scattered at a radius of approximately 25 square kilometers, which is sincerely promoted by some tour operators. The circuit consists of well-maintained Paravoor and Chennamangalam Synagogues, Paliyam Palace, Museum, Excavation sites, tourist boat rides, traditional handmade workshops of mastered artisans, etc. In addition to that, the Kodungallor region is noted for its age-old Syrian Catholic church, towering on the banks of the beautiful Backwaters. The Church houses the relics of the Apostle St. Thomas, brought here later. In the vicinity of the town the very first Mosque in India Cheraman Perumal Juma Masjid - is situated. Kodungalloor Ku-

scope, Muziris, as a tourist destination attracts considerably a very less number of conventional tourists now. The State Government of Kerala has commenced a Muziris Heritage Project in 2006 with honest enthusiasm by involving the departments of Culture, Tourism, and other related government departments,
for re-discovering the glory and grandeur of Muziris and showcasing it before the world. In popularizing the destination, the existing monuments, those constructed much later in various times are renovated with the basic Infrastructure. But as a matter of fact, currently, Muziris is not equipped to offer to a large number of conventional tourists anything more than a day excursion from Cochin. It is a big constraint of Major Tour operators to promote Muziris as a standalone destination or as a “product” on its own merit. The problem could be solved only if the Pattanam Excavations re-discover the disappeared harbour of the bygone era which surely could be exhibited as a USP of Kerala Heritage tourism in the Global Tourism Market. “The ground reality is that Muziris can be promoted mainly to the culture and pilgrim tourists visiting holy places pertaining to their faith. But the arrivals of such specialized high spend-
ing tourist groups are very less in number” says Arun Kumar KS with his two-decades-long Industry Experience, who is a Cochin-based Southern Regional Level Spanish speaking Professional Guide. Arun once was a practicing Lawyer in the Cochin High Court, became a professional guide due to his passion for this distinctive profession. Due to the cost-cutting wars among the tour operators, which is unhealthy competition, they are forced to bring only the low-spending leisure-seeking tourists whose interests are far beyond what a “future classic” but the present Muziris tour circuit can offer. To such conventional tourists spending a whole day, that too a minimum of a two hours’ journey to and from the popular destination of Cochin is a time and money consuming affair in their limited days of Holidays, as no overnight staying facilities in the International standards are
available at Muziris. “Lately, Muziris did little to buoy up tourists, though a “wow feeling” is still afar” opines Lijo Jose, the Director of Muziris Heritage Day-Tours, who is also a resident of Muziris. He adds that he doesn’t find it as a cakewalk to convince the tourists to promote the Muziris tour circuit. Presently he indulges mainly in ground handling of the Cruise Ship day excursion Tourists who arrive in Cochin Harbour among his other tour operation services. Aneesh Mon, Operations Head (South) of Dravidian Trails Holidays Pvt Ltd, based in Cochin shares the same feeling “Our main clientele is from the European countries. We find practical difficulty in selling the Muziris packages among the usual European leisure-seeking tourists. But as a mission, we assist foreign academicians, bring foreign journalists and international tour operators in view of popularizing
Muziris into a Future Destination. We believe that it is our duty to accelerate the emergence of destinations like Muziris”. Yet the possibilities of Muziris tour circuits are coveting. Once the Muziris Heritage Project is completed as envisaged, with all its historical and cultural eligibilities, the possibilities are high Muziris to be declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in Kerala. All kinds of tourists flock here if high-end leisure-based infrastructure, utilizing the backwaters and the adjoining localities are developed. However, uncertainty looms over the tiring process of the completion of the project in near future. A major clientele visit here is the Jewish Religious Groups as Muziris retains a “Jewish Aura”. Nandini Joshi, a Mumbai based Spanish Speaking Western Regional Level Professional Guide specializes presently in handling the high-profile Jewish religious

groups from Israel and the United States. She points out that even in the present context Muziris is an integral part of Jewish Religious Tours to Kerala. “An effective presentation skill of a Guide is required in Muziris who re-enact a zestfully furious football match on an empty eventless football stadium” adds Nandini, who is also a Faculty of Tourism Studies in Mumbai University, besides being an Ornithologist and a keen Naturalist. Natural calamities such as seismic reverberations, great floods, and volcanic eruptions often put archaeologists and history enthusiasts into dismay. At the same time, the innate human nature energizes them into a tireless spree to find out the true scientific evidence to chalk out and re-construct the past that often turns out to be the value-added tourism products. From the Tourism point of view, delivering high-quality Professional tourism only can attract high spending and research-oriented discerned International Tourists to the country. can open their doors without state-mandated capacity restrictions or physical distancing markers. The reopening comes nearly 15 months after Governor Gavin Newsom issued a March 2020 stay-at-home order designed
to slow the spread of COVID-19. “From California’s coastlines to our theme parks to our breathtaking national forests, our state’s diverse terrain and unique communities make us the envy of the world when it comes to tour-
ism,” Newsom said. “As we move forward to a post-pandemic life, our tourism sector is expected to come roaring back—making us, once again, a global leader in hospitality and leisure.” Attractions across the state are embracing the news with revised guidelines for guests. The Los Angeles Dodgers, for instance, will celebrate “Reopening Day” by returning to full capacity on June 15. At the San Diego Zoo, visitors will no longer need to make reservations before purchasing tickets. And face masks will no longer be required for fully vaccinated guests at Disneyland Resort. Visitors are still strongly encouraged to check with individual attractions and destinations for any specialized protocols and guidelines, but the default travel message is a big one: You’re good to go. “California’s tourism businesses stand ready to welcome travelers, and for the first time since the pandemic lockdown, visitors can now take in the full range of only-in-California, unforgettable
vacation experiences,” says Caroline Beteta, president, and CEO of Visit California. “California is a place that welcomes all people and all dreams, and the time to travel here is now.” As people return in greater numbers to the Golden State’s iconic destinations, they should not lose sight of the imperative to travel safely and responsibly. Visitors, residents, and tourism operators are encouraged to follow the seven principles of Visit California’s Responsible Travel Code. California still encourages visitors and residents to get vaccinated and, in line with CDC regulations, wear face coverings in congested environments. Here are some additional details of the reopening: Visitors are encouraged to be vaccinated before coming to California, but it is not a requirement to travel. Operators of large outdoor events of more than 10,000 people, including professional sporting events and some theme parks, are encouraged to screen
attendees for vaccinations or negative COVID-19 tests, but screening is not mandatory. Operators of large indoor events of more than 5,000 people are required to screen attendees for vaccinations or negative COVID-19 tests. Attendees should check guidelines with event operators when buying tickets or making reservations. To underscore the celebratory mood across the state, Visit California’s “Dreaming On in California” campaign will showcase tourism’s recovery with a weeklong series of experiences set against California’s epic backdrop for travelers who missed key milestones in 2020. The experiences include an unforgettable meal prepared by acclaimed chef Curtis Stone; behind-the-scenes access at a San Diego Padres game; a magical Disneyland Resort vacation; a luxury road trip with stops at Marriott International properties across the state; and a series of fairytale weddings at the luxurious Carneros Resort and Spa in Napa.
