TRAVEL BEHAVIOUR

PLAYS IMPORTANT ROLE

T

ourism Industry as one of the largest and fastest growing industries has played an important role in the service sector which influences the world economy. The growth of Tourism Industry depends on tourists and their destination choices as a reflection of their travel behaviour. Travel motives are also on cards since Travel behaviour depends on it. Travel behaviour is conceptualized as the way in which tourists behave according to their attitudes before, during and after travelling. Travel behaviour is a direct result of interaction between certain personal and environmental variables on a continuous basis. That is why it became an important factor which influences travel decisions like factors constitute of culture, travel motivations, finances and previous experiences. These Factors has been considered with importance and applied in product planning and Tourism marketing strategies. Researchers have analysed travel motivations in order to conclude a better understanding of travel behaviour. The prediction of

travel behaviour and knowledge of travel motivation play an important role in tourism marketing, in order to create demand and assist tourists in decision-making. It is important to know how a person interact with the situation to predict travel behaviour and understanding the positive and negative evaluative factors influencing destination choices of the tourists. Various researches indicate the existence of universal travel motivations and analyzed travel motivations in order to conclude a better understanding of travel behaviour. In 2006 Crompton researched and identified seven sociopsychological factors like escape from an everyday environment, discovery and evaluation of oneself, relaxing or participation in recreational activities, gaining a certain level of prestige, for the purpose of regression, strengthening family ties and facilitating their level of social interaction as motivate a tourist to travel. All research results indicated that tourism marketers are required to do research on a continuous basis in order to determine tourists travel behaviour. Factors that seem to be popular motivators, such as recreational activities and enriching and learning

experiences, should also be focused on during the marketing process. Every destination or property need to find unique aspects that can attract visitors to the resort as tourists are always looking for something different. The motivation to visit new destinations comes from the urge of the people to see to know and to experience. This urge drives people to travel to new places. It is sure that travel behaviour plays an important role in tourism as concept, industry and economy, and that is why it demands investigation. It is important for tourism products such as resorts and hotels need to understand the travel behaviour and more specific the travel motivations of tourists. Knowledge of Travel behaviour can help in product development, improved marketing strategies, enhanced service delivery approaches and the creation of a perfect product. Now a day destinations are branded and made to attract tourists to visit. In order to get the impact and bring tourists to the region, the marketing strategy should consider Travel behaviour as a tool of the particular destination.

esponsible Tourism (RT) has seeped into the DNA of Kerala’s hospitality culture in its first decade of implementation, but the recent floods and landslides should enable the state to further reinvent the communitycentric endeavour so as to set fresh standards, experts said at the recently concluded Kerala Travel Mart 2018 at Cochin. The government has earmarked Rs 700 crore for rebuilding the state under the Nava Kerala endeavour. The administration is also mulling about modifying certain laws for better tourism practices in the state, said Mr. Kadakampally surendran at KTM. “A survey will be conducted seeking the possibility of offering job opportunities through tourism for people in the state’s flood-hit areas even as the August calamity has not damaged the infrastructure facilities in the sector. Students of Kerala Institute 22

Tourism and Travel Studies (KITTS) will conduct the survey among the natives in this regard. It will help bring more people to the tourism sector,” he added. The state has to make its tourist spots friendly for the physically challenged in the spirit of RT, which must also be employed in allied animal welfare projects, was a point noted at a symposium of Kerala Travel Mart (KTM). RT will give job to 1 lakh people by the end of the ongoing 201718 financial year, while 10,000 RT units will be set up in the state by November, Dr. V .Venu, principal secretary, culture, said the August deluge has given Kerala a chance to audit its tourist performance while also making it an occasion to try novel ways of boosting tourism. “We still haven’t made full use of our waterways,” he noted. All the same, Kerala tourism has

begun voluntarily adopting RT what with even buyers showing the prospect of choosing their partners based on such a culture, he said. “Some of the main things that will be on their mind will be the RT practices that one’s business partner has demonstrated,” he added. Hotelier Mr. Jose Dominic said RT is the best protection against manmade calamities. “Till a couple of decades ago, tourism was considered a bourgeoisie activity. These days, it count it as an engine of economic development, more so community empowerment, thanks to RT,” he added. RT state coordinator Mr. Rupesh kumar. K said responsible tourism was initially met with a lot of resistance even from experts, but times have disproved their apprehensions. Today, RT benefits 7,943 people directly and another 23,000 indirectly, he revealed.

elebrating local myths and showcasing them for a global audience is one way of sustaining tourism in Kerala by ensuring community participation. Be it the recent installation of a giant sculpture of the Jatayu bird mentioned in Ramayana epic or the artworks based on local legends at the editions of Kochi-Muziris Biennale, such endeavours woo fresh sets of people to God’s Own Country, speakers said at the seminar on ‘New Products and Interests in Kerala’ at Kerala Travel Mart. Mr . Riyas Komu, founder of the Kochi Biennale Foundation that has been hosting India’s only such biennial cultural event since 2012, said it was no coincidence that the art event has Fort Kochi as its main venue. “The place (a western suburb of Kochi) has a layered history that shows in its multi-ethnicity: 40 communities from Jewish immigrants

to Kashmiri Pandits in a radius of a couple of kilometres,” said Komu, who is secretary of the KBF which is readying for its fourth edition from this December. Mr. Ajit Kumar Balaraman, CEO, Jatayu Earth’s Center, said that the eco-friendly Jatayu Rock Tourism project stands very close to Kerala’s cultural heritage. Jatayu Earth’s Centre at Chadayamangalam in downstate Kollam district also carries out adventure tourism. “The Park is an amalgamation of heritage, culture and pilgrimage. There are a museum and a 3D theatre coming up inside the rock,” he added. As for Jatayu Nature Park, the chief attraction here is the huge sculpture of the bird that finds mention in the Valmiki masterpiece, Ramayana. It is believed that the Jatayu in the Ramayana got its wings clipped by Lankan king Ravana while abducting Sita.

The Muziris Projects, north of Kochi, is another such initiative that provides the tourists the feel of revisiting our rich heritage. “The major attraction is that one can complete the visit to all sites in a day,” Managing Director Mr .P. M Naushad said. As for the state’s traditional wellness system, Ayurveda continues to suffer from a lot of misconceptions albeit its immense popularity abroad, according to Prof. Madan Kumar M K of Government Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram.

JATAYU PARK IS AN AMALGAMATION OF HERITAGE, CULTURE AND PILGRIMAGE. Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation (KSINC) representative Mr. Joseph Tinu said the KSINC’s cruise ship Nefertiti will be a major attraction in the tourism sector and around 200 people can travel in the day-to-dusk package. Homestay entrepreneur Mrs. Ranjini Menon said homestay is a realistic model of sustainable tourism. “Homestay is Responsible Tourism and staying in homestay is helping the local community,” she added. KTM President Mr. Baby Mathew and KTM former President Mr. Riaz Ahmed were also present at the seminar. October 2018 Tourism India

fter making inroads in the wellness markets of Germany and Russia, Kerala’s famed Ayurveda is now making its presence felt in the Middle East, wooing travellers from countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman and the UAE in large numbers with a promise to offer the traditional holistic system of healing in a most authentic manner. The sellers representing Ayurvedic hospitals and resorts at the ongoing Kerala Travel Mart (KTM) 2018, the biggest tourism conclave in the country, said they have been witnessing a huge rise in the number of tourists from the Middle East during the last five years. Mr. Baby Mathew, Chairman, Somatheeram Ayurveda Group and KTM President, said in the last five years there has been around 30 percent increase in the arrival of tourists from the Middle East. “It happened 24

as a result of massive campaigns that we carried out in the Middle East countries. Prior to that, there were no such campaigns.” “We organized wellness exhibitions in the Arabian Travel Mart five years ago. Since then, there has been encouraging results,” he said adding that the guests from Arabian countries are now coming to Kerala for long term treatments. “Today Aurveda thrives in Germany and Russia owing to the strenuous efforts we undertook in this regard. No doubt, in the coming days, Middle East is also going to follow their footsteps,” he added. Dr. Kiran B Nair, Managing Director, Vaidya Healthcare, Perumbavoor observed that things are definitely on the brighter side and most of them approach the Ayurvedic physicians as their family doctors.

igital media and even artificial intelligence are proving to be key requirements for tourism promotion to get newer audiences across the globe and God’s Own Country can’t be an exception, speakers told a seminar at the Kerala Travel Mart (KTM). Kerala’s tourism warrants renewed approach that promotes customised service as well as night life besides technology and packages that are updated with times so as to win back young visitors to the state, experts said. All the same, “over-tourism” should not disturb the normal routine of the hosts even as Kerala should explore the scope of non-conventional hospitality such as homestay and bread-andbreakfast, they noted at ‘Changing Trends in Travel and Tourism’ organised as part of the September 2730 KTM that aims to boost the state’s tourism prospects. Mr Suman Billa, Joint Secretary, Union Ministry of Tourism, highlighted

‘commoditisation’ as an urgent requirement of tourism in Kerala. “Select a niche area and curate it well. Be prompt with your service; speed matters,” said the senior bureaucrat, formerly a director and secretary of Kerala Tourism. “Also ensure your package has elements of some luxury, which most visitors seek to enjoy alongside their travel. Kerala must keep exploring new travellers, given that tourists generally don’t revisit spots. There is scope for collaborative work on this matter.” The other speakers at the 90-minute session were Mr. Cherian Philip, who heads the Nava Kerala mission aimed at rebuilding Kerala after last month’s floods, and Mr. P. Bala Kiran Director, Kerala Tourism besides Mr. P. K. Anish Kumar and Mr. Sejoe Jose ,travel entrepreneurs, Mr Baby Mathew ,KTM President. Mr Riaz Ahmed, Hotelier and former KTM president, was the moderator. Mr. Cheriyan Philip, who is a former KTDC chairperson, said

absence of a night life has been a constant complaint from tourists in Kerala. “Even a place like Dubai with its conservative ethos today has its people enjoying their time in various ways after sunset,” he noted, while also stressing on waste management. “Unless we go for such entertainment that doesn’t harm our culture, Kerala’s tourism has no future. Goa and even Chennai may overtake us, not to speak of Sri Lanka or Singapore outside India.” Mr . Bala Kiran said tourists of late are less patient to read details and know about a place. “We must serve them with digital technology,” he said. “Also we must include more focal spots on the itinerary. Malabar (northern Kerala), for instance, has a lot of potential.” Anish Kumar suggested added focus on social media publicity, while Sejoe Jose spoke of the increasing role of mobile phones in tourism.

This group includes the Ministry of Culture, the Environment Ministry, the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Ministry of External Affairs as well as the Home Ministry. elcome to Uttarakhand - The Land of Gods”, said the board that stretched across the NH 87 as we drove into the northern state of Uttarakhand. Uttarakhand in more ways than one is a land that bewitches with its charm. It is a land that seems to have been handcrafted by divine hands. A land which gives birth to two of India’s most sacred and venerated rivers, the Ganga and the Yamuna. We were thrilled as we entered the hallowed land of this pristine state which was embellished by the presence of the snowy Himalayan peaks that stretched across it like an exquisite necklace of pearls. Uttarakhand is divided into the regions of Garhwal and Kumaon. Garhwal is well known and has many famous tourist and pilgrimage destinations that attracts hordes every year. But Kumaon is the region which is relatively lesser known and untouched and has many pristine places that retain their earthy charm.

“W

The name Kumaon conjures up images of man-eaters and Jim Corbett, but that is now history though the Bengal Tiger still roams the jungles in the Jim Corbett National Park. Kumaon has much more to offer and is a complete indulgence for the senses. The region uncovers a hitherto hidden dimension at every bend in the road. A drive through the Kumaon region is in itself an experience that soothes and calms the nerves as one feels the sublime beauty of nature all around. The region comes alive to the music of cascading waterfalls, meandering flow of rivers, and the chirping of exotic Himalayan birds. Ethereal and somnolent lakes blend with mythical and mysterious temples to bathe Kumaon in an aura of beauty and mystique. Here we string together a few of the gems from the treasure chest that is Kumaon, gems that exude purity and are still not overrun by the footfalls of tourists.

KUMAON OR KUMAUN IS ONE OF THE TWO REGIONS AND ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISIONS OF UTTARAKHAND, A MOUNTAINOUS STATE OF NORTHERN INDIA, THE OTHER BEING GARHWAL. IT INCLUDES THE DISTRICTS OF ALMORA, BAGESHWAR, CHAMPAWAT, NAINITAL, PITHORAGARH, AND UDHAM SINGH NAGAR.

KAUSANI A Window To The Himalayas

A great place to wake up in, Kausani is literally a window to spectacular and panoramic views of the snow clad Himalayan peaks. Kausani orchestrated nature’s symphony to ecstatic proportions. The sight of the silvery Himalayan peaks like Trisul, Nanda Devi, and Panchachuli bathed in the golden glow of the rays of the sun is nothing short of nirvana. The beauty of Kausani touched the core of Mahatma Gandhi’s heart and he called it, ‘The Switzerland of India”, he wrote that he felt the greatness of the Himalayas only after viewing them from Kausani. Mahatma Gandhi spent some time in the picturesque hill station of Kausani in the year 1929. He

44

wrote a commentary about Anasakti Yoga from the Bhagavad Gita during his stay in Kausani. It is interesting to note that it was in 1930 that Mahatma Gandhi launched the historic Dandi March. Were the seeds of the Dandi March sown in his mind during his stay in Kausani? The intoxicating air of the Himalayas fills the serene town of Kausani with an aura of romance and beauty that is found in the verses of the great poets of the world. It is no wonder that Kausani is the place where one of India’s best romantic Hindi poets Sumitranandan Pant was born. Kausani is a place that one falls in love with at first sight and wants to spend a lifetime in. Kausani is located at an altitude of

If you are in search of a place that is far removed from the normal hustle and bustle of life and which immediately connects you with nature, then Sitlakhet is the place to head to. A lesser known hill station that perches high above the town of Almora on the verdant Syahi Devi hills, Sitlakhet overlooks the Himalayan ranges and is a small hamlet ensconced in the midst of Deodhar and Pine forests and embellished with luscious and exotic fruit orchards. Colourful flowers bloom merrily as one treads the hilly paths that are carpeted with dry pine leaves. Silence reigns supreme in the environs of Sitlakhet and is only broken by the sound of your own feet, the rustle of the wind, or the melody of the mountain birds. The place is so secluded and tranquil that if one were to listen carefully one would be able to hear the sound of silence itself. Sitlakhet is a place for quiet contemplation and communing with nature, for long walks in the woods while listening to nature’s music. Sitlakhet was a place whose beauty once enchanted the British with its charm. One can find the legacy of the British Raj in the form of some old

British mansions that have stood the test of time in the vicinity of Sitlakhet. An ancient temple dedicated to Goddess Syahi Devi atop the mountain peak adds to the varying charms of Sitlakhet. Sitlakhet in Almora district of Uttarakhand is located about 323 kilometres from Delhi and 31 kilometres from Ranikhet. The nearest airport to Sitlakhet is Pantnagar Airport at a distance of 147 kilometres. NANAKMATTA A Picture of Serenity

White egrets swoop down gracefully on the emerald paddy fields glistening with morning dew. The melodious strains of Gurbani soothe your ears as you approach the Nanakmatta Sahib, a Gurudwara that is associated with the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak. The small village that has developed around the

historic Gurudwara is also named as Nanakmatta. The village of Nanakmatta is said to have been sanctified by the presence of Guru Nanak Ji sometime in the early 16th century as well as by the visit of the sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind Ji. As you enter the precincts of the Gurudwara you are engulfed in waves of serene bliss. The white structure of the main Gurudwara is surrounded by massive courtyards on either side. The back of the Gurudwara has an ethereal looking Sarovar that adds to the tranquility of the place. The place reminds you of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, but Nanakmatta appears more pristine and untouched by the footfalls of tourists. Nanakmatta is located in the Uddham Singh Nagar district of

Uttarakhand and is about 294 kilometres from Delhi. The nearest airport is Pantnagar airport at a distance of about 55 kilometres. These are just three of the varied jewels from the seemingly inexhaustible supply that fills the treasure chest of the beautiful and mystical land of Kumaon in Uttarakhand. A land that is yet unexplored and untouched.
