welcome This authentic West Coast mountain town has people talking. It’s not just the spectacular setting that’s captured the world’s attention, it’s also the ease of access to the great outdoors for everything from wind and water sports to hiking and biking. Unquestionably, the geography here will amaze you. The Pacific Ocean narrows into Howe Sound, where the spectacular Coastal Mountains surround the Stawamus Chief, a granite monolith unlike any other. From the ocean to the snowy mountain peaks; from the rocky cliffs and waterfalls to the forests, lakes, rivers and estuary, Squamish is truly extraordinary. The area’s unique mix of mountains and water has created a world-class playground for adventurers of all levels. Within minutes of town, you can ride unbeatable mountain bike trails, hike in coastal rainforests, climb one of the world’s largest granite monoliths, kiteboard, windsurf, kayak, raft, paddleboard and, depending on the season, snowshoe and ski tour into the pristine backcountry. If you’re seeking a quieter adventure, Squamish has that too, in fresh air, scenic viewpoints, and a wealth of wildlife. With an award-winning brewery and distillery, farm to table dining experiences, a vibrant arts scene, a rich First Nations culture, and a variety of festivals and events for all ages, your itinerary will be full any time of year. During mythological times Siy’ám’ Smánit (The Chief) was a longhouse. A Tl’a7áshen-Feast was held inside with all of the animal people as guests. Xaays-Transformer Brothers immortalized this event by turning both the guests and the longhouse into stone.
The longhouse is still visible today. The spirits of the guests remain trapped inside. The Squamish People are careful never to point at Siy’ám’ Smánit, pointing shows disrespect and brings the rain and storms.
