Here, at the tip of the of the Howe Sound, where the spectacular Coastal Mountains surround the Stawamus Chief, a granite monolith unlike any other, is Squamish. The geography here will amaze you. From the ocean to the snowy mountain peaks, the rocky cliffs and waterfalls to the forests, trails, lakes, rivers and estuary, Squamish is truly extraordinary. Squamish offers endless options for both leisure travellers and adventure seekers. Within minutes you can ride world-class mountain bike trails, hike in Coastal rainforests, climb one of the largest granite monoliths in the world, kiteboard, windsurf, kayak, paddleboard, and depending on the season, snowshoe and ski tour into the pristine backcountry. If all of the adventure sports seem overwhelming, Squamish also offers limitless fresh air, scenic viewpoints and an abundance of wildlife. The vibrant arts scene and variety of festivals and events for all ages will keep your itinerary full any time of the year. Less than an hour from both Vancouver and Whistler, Squamish is a unique fusion of rugged landscapes, stunning vistas and West Coast culture. THE BUZZ ON SQUAMISH

The New York Times named Squamish as one of the top “52 Places to Go in 2015”. “Hundreds of trails weave through Pacific rain forest to glacial lakes, waterfalls and peaks. Kiteboarders ply a 26mile fjord, adventurers climb 2,300-foot Stawamus Chief, and birders gather for the annual return of thousands of bald eagles.”

“I’d heard stories about the great rafting, hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, sea kayaking, kite boarding and other activities that have earned Squamish the reputation as one of Canada’s main outdoor recreation meccas. But it took me a couple of decades to finally stop and visit for four days last summer. It was worth the wait.”

“Go this summer while Squamish is still flying under most vacationers’ radar.”

CLIMB Squamish is one of the world’s top rock climbing destinations. At present there are over 3,500 routes and boulder problems in the Squamish area. Most famous of course is the Stawamus Chief, which has enough routes to keep anyone busy for years. Davy Jones’ Locker - Smoke Bluffs

CLIMBING IN SQUAMISH The single most defining characteristic of the rock is not the sticky granite but the variety of routes available. The season extends from early spring to late fall and the climbing crags stretch from Murrin Lake Provincial Park to Whistler with the majority of climbing on the cliffs and walls that surround the stunning and world famous Stawamus Chief. Eagle Run Park in Brackendale is an excellent eagle viewing facility. An interpretive display explains the eagles as well as the salmon life cycle. Exit Hwy 99 at Mamquam Road and head north on Government Road to the bald eagle viewing area. Treat yourself to an Eagle Float trip with Sunwolf. These meandering float trips provide unparalleled access to the very place where the eagles are gathered as well as the opportunity to view the bald eagles from a remarkable vantage point – the river.

Bears Although black bears are most common in the Squamish area, there are grizzly bears (also known as brown bears) in and around Squamish as well. Black bears can be black, brown, cinnamon and even blonde (despite their name). These stately animals are born wild and wary of humans. Seeing a bear from a safe distance in its natural habitat can be a memorable experience, but please keep our bears wild being Bear Smart. Visit Bearsmart.com to find out more.

Eagles Between November and January each year Squamish hosts one of the most significant congregations of wintering bald eagles in North America. In the 1994 bird count, Squamish had the world record count of 3,769 eagles. During these months, you will see eagles perched in the treetops and along the shores of the Squamish and Mamquam rivers.
