Evidence of the presence of a sanctuary in the area before then includes votive offerings going back to the mid-8th century BC. There may have been other buildings in the area, but the cult itself was not housed in a main building. Two gigantic stone craters (huge monolith vessels), which were believed to be of the late Archaic period also stood in the area. According to tradition, there were two other temples at the Acropolis of Amathus apart from the temple of Aphrodite; one dedicated to Adonis and the other to Hercules. The relatives, as the custom stated, would go around the village from one house to the next, where the hosts would give them a chicken. They used to tie their legs and hang them on a piece of wood that someone would carry on his shoulders. Imagine what a rumpus was occurring during that time with the chickens hanging from somebody’s shoulder cackling in a panicked state within the narrow streets of the village. When the piece of wood filled with plenty of chickens, they would then take them in the couple’s yard. There, they would slaughter them, cook them and have fun until late with the entire family. This happening signalled the end of the marriage celebration. If you think about it, it would be nice after your marriage to have something like... frequent anniversaries. You can begin with the week after your wedding, continue in fifteen days and then... every month! Besides, how are you planning to celebrate your wedding anniversary? In Cyprus, the treats that are traditionally offered at weddings are the so-called “loukoumia” and “kourampiedes”. The loukoumia are round shaped and manufactured from semolina. Their filling is either of almond or pistachio nuts and are sprinkled with white powdered sugar.
