The place for prayer. The place for worshipping nature. For some, a place to escape from everyday life. For others, it is regarded as their daily lives. Moments of everydayness mixed with moments of relaxation. Common denominators: experiences, satisfaction, peace and diversity of the ordinary. It is almost certain that whoever reaches or lives permanently in Cyprus will feel at least something of the above. The island is large and the options are countless. The time that is required is from an hour to unlimited in order for someone to live what would please him or her the most. Churches and monasteries The churches and monasteries in Cyprus are hospitable to visitors. From parish churches in towns to Byzantine churches on the Troodos Mountains, chapels but also monasteries offer tranquility to the visitor. Places of peace and communication with God boost human stamina for the hardship of our epoch. The religious heritage of Cyprus, rich in history and monuments, overwhelms any Christian visitor. Magnificent churches, small stone-built churches, Byzantine hagiography in churches and monasteries with ecclesiastical museums elicit admiration worthy of any space that houses the sublime faith to the Christ. The passage of time and the religious conception of the Christian Cypriots have given a large number of churches and diversity in both architecture and the size of churches that someone could observe. Wine The wine records its own historical course on the island, which in recent years through the "Wine Routes" it highlights the particular characteristics of the Cypriot wine. Routes to the wine villages, visits to vineyards, wineries and local wine museums comprise for the visitor as sources that reveal the local wine. The journey with destination to wine is an experience of wine tastes combined with traditional dishes. The sun, the Mediterranean climate and the fertile soil are factors for the cultivation of vines on the island since antiquity, but also for the production of quality wines with the top being the sweet and fragrant Commandaria.

6

The expansion of vineyards in some villages became the core, which around it rotate the daily lives of the residents. The wine as power became a tradition and a long-lasting history. It shaped the landscape, where the presence of vines dominates in plains and ridges of low mountains. Cypriot cuisine A unique and highly enjoyable pleasure for many! In Cyprus, as nowhere else, the great variety of food, the cleanliness and quality local ingredients play a vital role for someone to feel completely satisfied by the gastronomy of the place. Despite the plethora cuisine choices, the traditional Cypriot cuisine ranks first with its king being the well-known "Cyprus Meze". The parade of the various appetisers, cooked and grilled dishes that will pass from the table compensate tastefully anyone who may think about his or her silhouette. Do not miss for any reason the experience of the Cypriot Meze, but also and of other traditional dishes in a tavern even if you escape for a while from your usual diet. It is no coincidence that the Cypriot cuisine gains more and more fans who seek it in many parts of the earth! The acquaintance with tradition If you do not get to know the tradition of a place, then your tour is not complete. Cyprus, scattered with villages, divulges through these a more crystallised concept on hospitality, the beauties of nature and the joys of a more human everydayness. In the villages, the morals and customs are inherited from generation to generation. Many of these such as the traditional occupations that have been annihilated by the industry revive through small festivals that are mainly organised during the summer by each village. The architecture that characterises most of the villages in Cyprus is simple. It combines stone for building walls, tiled roofs and protruding chimneys, narrow streets and courtyards with every kind of container that has been made a flower pot. This simplicity is the characteristic beauty of the villages of Cyprus, which in combination with their rich cultural heritage and natural landscape are becoming interesting destinations for touring at any time of the year.

Thousand years have passed since the time that according to legend the beautiful Goddess Aphrodite emerged from the foaming waves. The god of wind, Zephyr, blew gently on the large shell on which the goddess was found and drove it just a bit outside Paphos to the beach known as "Petra (stone) tou Romiou. The silent witnesses of this appearance of the goddess from the sea are the big rock and the surrounding smaller ones, which stand until this day. Their view is astonishing and is enjoyed daily by many visitors, but also lovers of legends and history. The Hours, who in mythology were the seasons, received Aphrodite and after dressing and adorning her, they took her to Olympus and presented her to Zeus and the other gods. Everybody admired her and was dazzled by her beauty, told her countless compliments, while among the male gods began an effort to see who would succeed in making her his wife. She was given the protection of love and beauty, since she was characterised by these and the goddess obtained a place among the twelve gods of Olympus. Cyprus is her homeland and the Cypriot land, the place for her wanderings. The island was to see the goddess experiencing stormy romances with the leading being that with Adonis. Adonis emerged from the bark of the tree that Aphrodite earlier had transformed the princess of Syria, Myrrha. Beautiful Myrrha had boasted that she was much more beautiful than even, the goddess of beauty. Aphrodite angrily caused her passionate

8

love for her father, whom Myrrha tricked and lived with him twelve erotic nights. When her father discovered that he was misled and mated with his daughter, full of rage and indignation chased her to kill her. Myrrha managed to escape and ran to the mountains. He caught up to her, lifted his sword and was about to cut her head off, but Aphrodite took pity on her and transformed her into a tree, known as Myrsini. As the sword descended, it cut metamorphosed Myrrha on the trunk from where an infant came out. Aphrodite, facing the beautiful baby that came out from the tree was excited, she named it Adonis and to protect it she gave it to Persephone, wife of Hades, to raise it in her dark kingdom. When Adonis grew up though and became a handsome young man with a very nice body and a divine aspect, Persephone, enchanted by his beauty, fell in love with him and refused to give him back to Aphrodite. The goddesses began to quarrel and beat each other, but none could prevail. Thus, they ran to all-wise Zeus to solve their difference. Zeus decided that Adonis would spend the one third of the year next to Aphrodite, the other one third with Persephone and the remaining third where he would prefer. Adonis, madly in love with Aphrodite, lived only four months in the Underworld and the other eight with her. Whenever the time came to leave Hades and ascend to the earth, the whole nature greeted him with joy. The fields became green, the flowers and trees bloomed and a wonderful aroma flooded the atmosphere. Aphrodite abandoned her

divine palace on Mount Olympus and lived with her young lover in the mountains and forests of Cyprus. Their favourite place was Akamas, where mountains, rivers, streams and rocks have been linked with their erotic walks exuding until today the echo of this stormy love. The goddess of love eventually adored Adonis and in order to be found in the arms of her beloved and to live with him eight wonderful months ignored that she was the wife of the god of fire, Hephaestus, but also the lover of god of war, vengeful Ares who aimed to give an end to their love. Ares angrily and overwhelmed by jealousy sent a wild boar and with its tusks mortally wounded Adonis. As the legend states, as soon as the goddess ran to help her injured lover, stepped on a thorn and from the blood that flowed, a rose was painted red; until then only white roses existed. The love of Aphrodite and Adonis was praised by the oldest writers, Homer and Hesiod. To no other god love was not described and employed as the one with Aphrodite and Adonis. Their love became the source of inspiration for many artists in different parts of the earth. I wonder how many people have wished or wish to live for even one day such a kind of love. The birth of the goddess, but also the powerful heartbeat of these two mythical entities made Cyprus known from antiquity until today. Many claim that it is a fairy tale, but a visit to the places where this strong love developed leave a dreamy and mystical flavour of a strong but unfulfilled love written with the power of legend, tradition and history‌

There are many stories about the discovery of ice cream that composes until today the cool saviour of heat and of course, one of the sweetest pleasures for the human tongue. The first steps of the invention of ice cream take us to faraway stories and legends, lost over the centuries, which are very charming and interesting. The leading creator of the production of ice cream seems to be China, where, according to reports in 2000 BC was made from lightly boiled rice, spices and milk, which were placed in the snow to clot. However, it seems that through this course the first form, but the idea as well of ice cream increasingly began to improve. It managed to go beyond geographical and cultural boundaries and to become from old times, a timeless globalised product. The ancient Romans invented sorbet, which in a way is the ancestor of today's ice cream. Historical sources mention its existence in the yard of the Roman Emperor, Nero (from 37 to 68 AD), who sent his slaves to the mountains to collect fresh snow and bring it before it melted so that he would enjoy it with fresh fruit and honey. The manufacture of sorbet was adopted later on by the Arabs, which acquired the Arabic name 'sherbet', because of its sweet taste. Nevertheless, the use of snow, since the refrigerator was not discovered yet, made it as a luxurious kind and a dessert for the rich of the older epochs. A turning point in the construction of ice cream has been the use of milk, eggs, sugar and aromas that produced a creamy and delicious mix. In the 17th century, in the yard of the French King Louis XIV, the first official presentation of ice cream to the high society occurred. Indeed, at that time there was a controversy among doctors and other

10

scholars as to whether the ice cream was good for digestion or not. The French chef of King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland impressed his special guests when at an official dinner an exceptional dessert was offered to them that looked like snow, but contained a sweet taste. Charles, being flattered, offered 500 pounds every year to the chef to not tell anyone the recipe and to generate ice cream just for him and his receptions. Thus, the recipe of ice cream was kept secret until 1649, when he was beheaded and therefore, the ice cream’s recipe had leaked and in around 1700 the first ice cream recipes in books had appeared. Nonetheless, the dissemination of ice cream, the perfection of recipes and the design of machines for its production is due to the Italians. In Italy, the art of the traditional construction of ice cream passed from father to son, hence, when in 1960 a migration wave of Italians occurred, many manufacturers of ice cream passed their expertise to the countries that they migrated to. The ice cream became one of the most famous desserts in the world and Italy, the cradle of the art of ice cream production. Sicilian Francesco Procopio dei Coltelli was undoubtedly one of the most influential figures in the history of ice cream and was among the first who sold ice cream to the public. In 1686, he improved the production of sorbet, videlicet ice cream without milk and launched a café with his name, “Café Procope”, which quickly became one of the most popular haunts of the literary world in

France, where Voltaire, Balzac and Victor Hugo frequented. This café exists until today and is one of the most significant in Paris. The appearance of the first itinerant ice cream centres in busy streets of European cities follow. It commenced with Italian migrants who sold ice cream with the use of a trolley, known as an ice cream cart, to passers. Somewhere here, the cone also appeared as the solution to the many broken or stolen cups that daily took place. Unlike today, ice cream was not sold widely in stores, such as supermarkets and kiosks since during that epoch they did not exist; therefore, its sale had increased in demand and quickly began to take place by utilising a car, the well-known “pagotariko” (ice cream car). The ice cream cars exist until today in a much more limited number, since ready ice creams have overwhelmed the market in a worldwide level. The special flavours that appear at intervals, which consist of tasteful influences from the country of origin, add the final touch to the history of ice cream. Such examples are the yogurt ice cream, whose discovery is Greek and its main ingredient is yogurt with fruits, honey or nuts. It is regarded as one of the ice creams with the fewest calories and has been loved in many countries of the world. Additionally, mastic ice cream is of Greek origin as well and specifically from the island of Chios, where mastic is the main product produced on the island. The flavours from Cyprus, such as rose and prickly pear also add their mark on the history of ice cream.

The village of Platanistasa is perched on the mountain ridges of Madaris and Papoutsa, on the edge of the Troodos Mountains and gazes from above the breathtaking mountain scenery and the villages of the Pitsilia region. A characteristic feature of the village is the high mountains, whose peaks reach up to 1,000 metres. During the winter months they are snow-covered, while the passing of low clouds through them is a frequent and very enjoyable spectacle. The foothills of the mountains are traversed by tributaries of the Serrahi River and help for dense vegetation. Fruit trees such as cherry, apple, pear and the hazelnut forest compose of the main species that grow in the cool and dry climate of Platanistasa. Hence, owing to its green surrounding and pleasant climate the Frank nobles chose it to build their palace in the countryside, in the Middle Ages, during the era when Cyprus was subjugated to the dynasty of the Lusignans. The archaeological findings from the land of Platanistasa shed light on an important story that wants the village to be inhabited since the ancient times however, the depth of time is overshadowed by a charming mystery. Remains from an altar, tombs and earlier settlements testify the changes caused by time and natural disasters, but also the uninterrupted human presence in the area. Many historical monuments have been exploited to provide to foreigners and locals cultural experiences, among them standing the Byzantine Church of the Holy Cross of Agiasmati, the Watermill and the Oil Mill, which has been converted into a Museum of Folk Art, Tradition and Heritage. Other two monu-

14

ments that stand as proud witnesses of the history of Platanistasa are the church of Saint John the Theologian and the church of Archangel Michael, which are under the protection of the Cyprus Department of Antiquities. The progress and development of Platanistasa boasts and contemporary places of interest such as the square of Kyprianou Kouppa in the centre of the village, the community’s guesthouse in the new community’s buildings, the community’s park at the entrance of the village and the nature trail with a distance of 7 kilometres. Through this route, the visitor could observe the Byzantine Church of the Holy Cross of Agiasmati, the great Byzantine

Church of Our Lady of Araka and the square of Kladou Nterousia with the large oak tree at the entrance of the community. Someone could support that a trip to Platanistasa looks like a journey into the heart of the Cypriot culture that exudes simultaneously a breath of relaxation and rejuvenation in the Cypriot countryside. A visitor who wanders around the village feels truly lucky as he or she discovers the beauties of this place. The picturesqueness of its settlement in traditional architecture and the peacefulness of the environment and the residents’ rhythms of life surrounded by the fragrant breeze of the mountains are just some of what you could experience in Platanistasa.

A picturesque wine-producing village in the District of Limassol framed by low hills covered with vineyards. At its hearing, the mind brings images of earthenware jars filled with delicious wine, cobblestone narrow streets and houses of traditional architecture with stone-built walls and tiled roofs. The historical course of the village is connected with wine, to the point that in earlier times every house in the village comprised a small winery with a workshop for the manufacture of grape productions in order for the family to have until the next harvest, all the goods that the grape offers. Today, in Kilani five small wineries operate, where the visitor has the opportunity to experience some of the most famous wines of Cyprus and to gain knowledge and experiences on the most

16

ancient drink of the world. The two local workshops in the village are considered to be sources for learning on how to produce the grape as a dish, such as the Cypriot preserves, palouzes, raisins and kiofteria, while what impresses the most are the long threads of the soutzioukon that are hanged to dry out. The tradition of the village seems to revolve around Orthodoxy, the industriousness of its inhabitants and the vines that thrive on the backs of its hills. Hence, in its cultural heritage reference points of the past are included to inform the younger generations, locals and foreigners about the history of the village. Of course for the older generations, these places compose lighthouses of memory and adherence to tradition. As someone is found in Kilani, he or she must not fail to visit the Ecclesiastical and Viticulture Museum, which houses significant exhibits from the history of the village, as well as and its three churches. The church of the Virgin of Eleousas (Tenderness), the Holy Byzantine Church of Monogeni, a building of 1766 and the church of Saint Mavri, a building of the 12th century, which is situated halfway of the route from Kilani towards the neighbouring village of Pera Pedi. The church of Saint Mavri with the running waters of the Kryos River and the massive plane tree covering with its large branches its yard is a lovely religious place encompassed with peace that excites for its natural beauty, but also for the local legends surrounding the life of the Saint. Kilani is the ideal place for those seeking more authentic images of the Cypriot countryside. Walking in the village is necessary for an absolutely unique experience. In the picturesque restored houses with their tiled yards filled with flowers, where one could traverse them by following the narrow streets of the neighbourhoods what is discovered are beautiful pictures filled with natural wealth and tradition. The residents with their occupations provide the settlement of the village and its fields with a breath of life. The square deserves to become a landmark for every visitor of Kilani. This exceptional small village keeps hold of small taverns and cafes, a welcoming atmosphere and picturesque scenery that changes the mood and removes any tension.

On the east coast of Cyprus, in the arms of the Famagusta Bay is the beautiful, kissed by the sea and forward-looking Deryneia. A small town located just two kilometres from the astonishing blue sandy beaches, which is characterised by plains consisting of a vast quantity of strawberry plantations. To the south, it borders with the municipalities of Paralimni, Sotira and the community of Frenaros. To the north with the historic and once, cosmopolitan Famagusta, which is under illegal occupation by the Turks subsequent to the invasion of 1974. In the occupied part of Cyprus an important part of the small town of Deryneia is also found. The existence of this small polity is lost in the depths of time. The archaeological sites and historical and religious monuments reveal a rich culture and a long history. The first settlement is attributed to Greek warriors immediately after the Trojan War. Specifically, its establishment is due to the legendary King Nestor, who came from the ancient town of Laconia, Gerinia. According to Homer, but also to the traditions preserved by Pausanias, King Nestor was also named as “Gerinios.” Hence, perhaps the ancient town of Nestor in Cyprus could have been named as “Gerinia” and with the passage of time prevailed as “Deryneia”. Deryneia is located a few kilometres from the summer tourist resorts of Ayia Napa and Protaras, thus there are many travellers who visit it as they commence their excursions from these two points to get to know the rest of Cyprus. Meanwhile, for the locals it is regarded as a good suggestion for a Sunday excursion, which combines several attractions, traditional taverns and an amazingly clean and emerald green environment. What is discovered is a destination to which the nostalgic elements of the bygone village coexist with the modern, while it develops into a small town. Here, the traditional houses and narrow streets are found next to the modern homes and the various distinct development projects. Its beautiful neighbourhoods combine the Cypriot tradition with modern amenities. Traditional buildings that exist over 120 years have been completely renovated in order to convert to hospitable guesthouses, restaurants or residences thus, bringing tourism development to the small town. Today in Deryneia, a visitor could experience an exceptional travel experience that includes a quality green environment, a rich history and cultural tradition. You may combine them with gastronomical pleasures, which are offered by the local traditional taverns and the warm hospitality of the residents. In this friendly atmosphere feel welcomed and enjoy the beauties that this wonderful small town has to offer … Strawberries For 60 years now, Deryneia ranks first in the cultivation and production of strawberry in Cyprus. Sweet and juicy, thanks to the Mediterranean Sun and care of the farmers, this fruit evokes moments of exquisite taste, keeps hold of the colour of passion and its shape is reminiscent of a heart. Surrender to the secrets of this aromatic fruit and taste what it has to offer. Try them with or without sugar, with yogurt or whipped cream and of course, with chocolate or a glass of champagne. Every two years the Municipality of Deryneia in its honour organises the “Cyprus Strawberry Festival”, where thousands of festival visitors, both locals and foreigners, apart from the rich artistic program, are also offered with free abundant fresh strawberries and various strawberry preparations such as juice, jam, liqueur, sweets and ice creams, which are all provided willingly by the producers of Deryneia. The Folklore Museum While you are found in Deryneia what is worth visiting is the Folklore Mu-

18

seum, which is housed in an old traditional house in the centre of Deryneia. The museum’s building was declared as preserved and was renovated by the municipality based on a plan to represent operably a traditional Cypriot house. All the exhibits were offered free to the museum by the residents of Deryneia and the surrounding area. Many visitors choose the Folklore Museum to celebrate their wedding in a traditional and romantic atmosphere. Religious monuments Deryneia combines an excellent opportunity for someone to observe many remarkable churches and chapels. Some date back to the Byzantine Era and consist of great architecture. One such church is the church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, which stands in the centre of Deryneia. It was built in the late 15th century and is adorned with a beautiful wooden carved iconostasis in which there are icons from the 18th century of hagiographic excellent art. If you like observing small picturesque chapels, Deryneia is surrounded by four chapels that you should definitely not miss to visit since they are premises of serenity, prayer and wonderful picturesqueness. In the central square of Deryneia, you will find the old chapel of Saint George, which was built in the 15th century. You may continue your religious tour with the chapel of Saint Anthony, which was built over the remains of the old nunnery. Later on, you may visit the chapel of the two Saints Constantine and Helen, which contains in its courtyard a well from which commences an underground tunnel of a length of 300 metres, which carries water to the surface. Finally, you will see the chapel of Saint Modestos, which is considered to be the protector of the animals. It was built in the last century and within it waxwork of animals that are “offerings” from the faithful, mostly farmers, are kept. Therefore, enrich your travel experiences by getting to know Deryneia. This small town has the power to amaze since it composes a wonderful destination in the hinterland. It combines interesting excursion rides with the joy inspired by the beauty of nature. The residents will offer you their warm hospitality with arms wide open so that you become familiar with their place and all this in the aftermath of an ancient history and a great tradition…

A blessed place, a place rich in history and truly fetching. A place that combines, what every traveller is looking to find in Cyprus. Its natural wealth, its great history, its cultural activities, its hospitality and the strong contrasts of colours that one encounters when visiting the village, comprise these comparative advantages that make it an important destination for all the seasons of the year. The village spreads in the large and fertile plain of Kokkinochoria between the occupied and free part of Cyprus, the border and cultural resource for Hellenism and Christianity. The existence of the village of Achna is lost in the depths of centuries, to a time when this piece of land was a part of the glorious Ancient Salamis in Cyprus and

20

developed a great Greek civilisation. Later on, it became part of the Byzantine Empire and welcomed Orthodoxy with the construction of famous Byzantine churches. Archaeological findings indicate human presence from the Archaic period and reflect the attraction that the place holds. The tour to legacies of past historical moments, tombs, ancient temples and churches emits memories and images to the modern visitor. In Achna, the past and present offer a rich cultural landscape with elements of antiquity being mixed with Byzantine traditions and the modern era. All together, they became pieces of a composition inspired by the beauty of the earth making Achna a place of interest. In the vastness of its plain, the allure of the fluid element’s power charms with the beautiful artificial water dam. From its fringes, the wild shrubby vegetation and the lands with grain and fruit trees that surround it have created over time a magnificent wet habitat. Since March 2008, the village has been declared a protected area, as it is one of the most important parts of the island for breeding and nesting rare waterfowls. In this astounding environment, the community generated a beautiful park, where there is a farm with donkeys, various species of birds and a restaurant of traditional Cypriot cuisine. The view from the restaurant to the dam is so amazing that it is considered to be an attraction to visitors, who want to admire its calm turquoise waters. In 1974, the Turkish invasion was a major milestone in the history of the village, since among others it also caused the movement of the settlement. The village’s forest, the so-called “Dasaki of Achna”, began to be populated from the Achiotes (residents of Achna), who were driven out of their village and from other refugees from the surrounding occupied villages. Gradually, a new village was generated within breathing distance from the old one, which is located completely in the occupied part of Cyprus, abandoned to the mercy of time. From the invasion, the chapel of Our Lady of Trachea and of Saint George Teratsioti have been sparred and are of great historical and religious value. These two chapels are found under the protection of the Cyprus Department of Antiquities. Their existence exceeds more than 500 years and both the architecture and hagiography of their temple is an exquisite art. Today, Achna is a modern big village numbering about 2,500 residents, who are characterised for their hard work which resulted in the creation of small crafts. The new village although it lacks the monuments of history, it manages through the generations of its people to maintain all its characteristic features. The residents following intently their roots retain their local traditions, morals and customs. As someone is found in Achna, he or she will be impressed by the friendly warmth that exists and by the kinds of crafts, which certain compose the revival and upgrade of traditional arts such as that of the blacksmith, carpenter and cheesemaker. The tour in Achna could be completed and deliciously, by getting to know the authentic traditional cuisine in one of its small taverns.

Delikipos is a small village that was created in a small valley surrounded by low mountains and is just 3 kilometres west from the village Kornos. Its name reminds of a garden, since in Greek the word “kipos means garden and indeed, its natural beauty with dominant being the pine trees on the mountains that surround it, the olive groves, the feast from the fruit trees, the cultivations of wheat and the various native plants in the valley is breathtaking. However, a

22

particular impression to the visitor is caused by the centennial olive trees with their thick trunks. They are remnants of the Venetian period, during the epoch when Cyprus was divided into fiefs and was found at the peak of its agriculture by filling with products the holds of Venetian trading ships. The village is sparsely populated and the visitor has the opportunity to walk on the mountains, ravines and even in the village along with the magical sounds of nature. The residents love it because they daily enjoy a wonderful emerald green environment with immense silence, while lovers of cycling and bike riding find in Delikipos beautiful rural routes to indulge in their favourite sport. The small lake of Delikipos in conjunction with the habitats that it has developed around it and the River Milos (Mill), which is found around its route, until it sheds its waters into it, they produce an amazing landscape that is worth visiting. The lush vegetation, the frogs and ducks, the singing of the birds, the rustling of leaves and the sound of running waters create spectacular views of the beautiful countryside. In this excellent habitat rare species of Cypriot flora develop and protected species of reptiles and birds build their nests. At the point where the lake ends, the stone-built "Diplogefyro" (dual bridge) is found, a monument of earlier times, but of human intelligence on the discovery of ways to pass over the river. The stone-built, tiled roof church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour is the largest edifice in Delikipos. It was built in the 18th century and is under the supervision of the Cyprus Department of Antiquities. According to old written testimonials most of materials with which the church was built from derived from an older building in the area, which its kind remains unknown, as well as the reason that it was destroyed. Nevertheless, the wooden carved temple of the church has gathered old icons of the 17th century of great hagiographic art. The grandeur of the nature of Delikipos is its specificity. Its tour appeals to those who love nature, the study of the Cypriot flora and fauna, but also for those seeking tranquility. Enjoy a different visit that provides an excellent opportunity for bird watching and experiences filled with the sense of peace and freedom in the refreshing nature.

Nowadays, the bygone dives that were conducted infrequently by individuals for sponge fishing have developed to organised, underwater tours with great interest and experiences for those involved. Dive centres offer lessons to both trained divers and beginners, as well as the necessary equipment according to their level of experi-

ence in diving. Most of the dives are based on the exploration of sea caves, shipwrecks, but also on the experience of the submarine action. An interesting diving destination in Cyprus is Paphos, a city with rich history and maritime activity since ancient times. Its seafloor reveals to divers a part of its history and offers exceptional experiences from underwater fish feeding and images that enchant! The “Amphitheatre” diving site This dive requires Open Water (OW) qualification. Access takes place from the shore just past Coral Bay, which involves a short walk down towards the rocks. It is a very popular dive, which varies from 4 to 12 metres. It took its name from the natural formation on the rock that was created with the passing of time by sea currents, which reminds of an amphitheatre. Apart from the breathtaking rocks, there is also plenty of marine life to admire, including sipper, eel and cuttlefish. The “Vera K Wreck” diving site Open water (OW) qualification is required. Access is available by boat, 25 minutes from the harbour of Paphos. The Lebanese truck ran aground in shallow waters in 1972 and originally, was used as a target in practices of the army. Later on though, it was declared as dangerous to other ships and in 1974 with a blast, it was pushed to a greater depth. Currently, it is resting in a crater that was generated by the explosion, 11 metres in depth from the surface of the sea. Very near to it are two large archways and narrow tunnels suitable for experienced divers. There is also a rich marine life observation. The “White Star Wreck” diving site An Open Water (OW) certification is required. This former Russian fishing boat sank in the sea near the port of Paphos in 2006 as it was tugged to Limassol to be completely destroyed. Now, it lies on a rocky seabed, 14 to 18 metres below the surface of the sea and houses groupers, breams and other fish. The “Amphorae Caves” diving site An Open Water (OW) qualification is required. There are several caves, including the one with a low stack of amphorae and gullies to explore at a depth 5 to 12 metres. The “Devils Head” diving site This diving experience requires Open Water (OW) certification. Access is available by boat. It is located off the northwestern coast of Paphos, in the region of Akamas and combines caves and interconnecting tunnels at a depth of 11 metres. Here, during the season of the turtles divers encounter green and Caretta Caretta turtles. There is plenty of marine life to admire around the rocks.

The village of Kornos is built on a hilly area surrounded with pine trees in the centre of Cyprus, 25 kilometres southwest of Nicosia and 27 west of Larnaca. It is known for its pottery, which is characterised by red clay pots whose art goes back centuries, but also for the natural beauty of the pine forest that encircles it. However, as someone visits this village, he or she will discover that it has to demonstrate and offer much more to the browser. Indeed, some of the sights are gigantically astonishing and their existence is covered by a mist of mysteriousness. The once small settlement that was created by potters owing to the excellent quality of the soil in the area for the construction of clay gradually developed into a large village, which numbers today to 2,000 residents. Apart from the expansion of the settlement, over the centuries the village was left with a great legacy such as exceptional Orthodox churches, rich culture and

people that support the development of the place by launching businesses focused on local tradition and art. Here, the visitor will discover many great things that will monopolise his or her the attention, for example by visiting the local labs to observe the revival of crafts such as mosaic, hagiography, silverware, the manufacture of handmade porcelain dolls and pottery. Through these experiences what could not be missed out are the traditional flavours. The traditional bakery and patisserie in the centre of the village, continues to ferment local buns, the round loaf with yeast and other local delicacies. The small creamery produces the Korniotiko Halloumi and Anari (Cypriot cheeses), based on the old traditional recipe, with the use of goat milk. In the restaurant of the village, through a variety of appetisers one could experience the authenticity of the Cypriot cuisine. It is amazing how one small place like Kornos, combines so many things that do not leave any visitor unmoved. The activities that take place in the village such as cycling on the rural roads of the forest, hiking in the village or out in nature and climbing on rocky mountains have become experiences and sources of learning. The village is rich in history and many of them will literally captivate you: The rocky "caves" that are connected with myths and legends is an attraction that exudes a mysterious atmosphere since they were used as a sacred place for worship. The "caves" housed the mortals’ worship of the Olympian Gods, while later on, in the period of the Christian persecutions they became a refuge for the Christians who were persecuted. An impressive sculpture of nature is the dual rocky mountaintop "Lithari", which forms a large fish and dominates the centre of the village. The "Lithari" preoccupied historians and scholars for its shape, its relation to the lost city of Atlantis, but also to the flow of vital energy, as it is happening at the Parthenon in Athens, the Pyramids of Gaza and in other holy places in various parts of the earth. The same energy wave is noted in the area of the village with the toponym of "Troullorotsos", where on the hilly landscape what impresses is the existence of two blocks, one besides the other, giving the impression that they seem to emerge from the depths of the earth. They are 20 feet tall and their presence provides a very impressive sight. Their uniqueness on the surrounding area emphases the imagination on their appearance, while according to scholars, it is regarded as the point of Cyprus from which invisible and mysterious canals of earth pass and emit aplenty positive cosmic energy. From the rich nature of Kornos, an organised picnic area could not be missed out as well. It is located in an area of pine trees and consists of wooden tables, benches and a playground. It is an ideal place for picnics, cooking food on the grill, to rest under the shade of the pine trees and it is considered to be suitable for children to enjoy plenty of play in the fresh country air. Ultimately, what the visitor ascertains in the village of Kornos is that the magic sights, the beautiful landscapes and the approach of tradition, through its tour, offer many authentic experiences and a much better acquaintance with the place.
