For some of us summer is all about enjoying an exquisite day of yachting in the waters of Monaco. For others, lounging on a sunbed at a chic Marbella beach club, on an island paradise in Mauritius or by the shimmering shoreline of Miami. Whatever the destination, they will all invariably have one aspect in common: water.

So this issue our special focus is on the sea, a sparkling nautical feature that includes an inside look at luxury living on four awe-inspiring leisure boats designed by the world’s premier shipbuilders, gets the adrenaline flowing with a bout of vigorous powerboating and previews the largest international showcase of super and megayachts, the Monaco Yacht Show, and the stunningly re-branded Cannes Yachting Festival.

We also savour a culinary holiday cruising around the Mediterranean on-board a classic sailing clipper, and a set off for a relaxing break on Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Belle catamaran.

From Michelin-star restaurants and sumptuous spas to topclass cultural entertainment and internationally renowned sports events, Monaco is one of the world’s premier glamour destinations, and the sea is closely intertwined with the city-state’s economic fabric – through its modern, fully-equipped harbour, prestigious yacht club and key base for many yachting industry professionals.

It is also home to the world’s largest showcase of super and megayachts, the Monaco Yacht Show, and this year’s event (24-27 September) is set to be the “biggest ever” with an expanded exhibition area and berthing for around 110 superyachts in Port Hercules.

The organisers reported last year that the 23rd edition appeared to herald the beginnings of a recovery in the yachting market and, in the lead up to the 2014 event, they note that “it seems today that some yachting statistics are close to pre-crisis figures, in terms of volume, with order books and demand for finance on the increase”.

They add that increasing demand for vessels over 100 metres has also been noticeable over the past two to three years, “and the Monaco Yacht Show will now be able to berth these giants for all to see”.

Фестиваль, ранее именовавшийся Festival de la Plaisance de Cannes, пройдет в 37-й раз. Он считается главным яхтшоу Европы. Sparkling re-brand for prestigious Bay of Cannes event

The Cannes Yachting Festival returns to its glamorous Bay of Cannes setting in September with a re-branded image focused on elegance, glamour, new horizons and the pleasure of sailing.

Previously known as the Festival de la Plaisance de Cannes, the 37th edition of what is considered Europe’s premier in-water boat show is scheduled to present 550 yachts and welcome 50,000 visitors from 9 to 14 September.

For 2014, the festival has simplified the show layout, dividing it into eight different exhibitor category zones (seven in the Vieux Port and one at Port Pierre Canto), each with its own name and associated colour, for clearer navigation.

The Vieux Port will showcase new models and products, with a mix of motor boats and sailing boats ranging from five to 50 metres on the water, and parts manufacturers and service companies positioned on the land.

Founded in 1989 by Swedish entrepreneur and classic boat connoisseur Mikael Krafft, Star Clippers initially operated two identical four-masted barquentines, the 360’ Star Flyer and her twin Star Clipper. The vessels were the first sailing clippers to be built since 1910, heralding something of a renaissance of the golden age of sail. In 2000, Krafft added a third vessel, Royal Clipper, a 439’ long, masted, fully squarerigged vessel with 42 sails, the largest sailing vessel of its kind in the world.

High-tech re-creations of the classic clipper sailing ships that dominated the oceans of the world in the 19th century, today they offer passengers “comfortable, crewed sailing on traditional clipper ships built to uncompromising yacht safety, with the luxurious surroundings of a private yacht”.

When the idea of devising an “antique dealer fair” first arose in the 1950s, the dream was to create an event in which the beauty of the objects on show could compete with that of the women visiting the exhibition.

The idea was developed under the aegis of the new chairman of the National Union of Antiques Dealers (Syndicat National des Antiquaires, or SNU), Pierre Vandermeersch, and its path to the Grand Palais – a legendary Parisian landmark built for the 1900 Universal Exhibition – was opened by André Malraux. The organisers were keen to find a venue “where elegance, prestige and celebrations would await a host of art lovers and collectors”.

In its present form, the inaugural International Biennale was held in 1962, in a magical glass-roofed setting of pavilions, gardens and fountains – a focal gathering of French and foreign antiques dealers, decorators, jewellers and bookstore owners.

Over the years, André Crivelli, Jean-Raphaël Millies-Lacroix, Pier-Luigi Pizzi, Jean-Michel Wilmotte and Christian Lacroix have been just some of the celebrities bringing their talents to a show that reflects the passion of enthusiasts – both Paris elite and international jet set.

конце концов, бриллиант – это навсегда, и прежде чем его покупать, нужно учесть намного больше факторов, чем обычно предлагают ведущие ювелирные бренды и профессионалы. Вот что делаем прежде всего...

При покупке бриллианта более 0,3 карат (1 карат = 0,2 грамма), мы всегда должны настаивать на геммологическом сертификате, и никакой сертификат ничего не стоит, если он не исходит от одной из двух международно признанных организаций: GIA в США (у нее наилучшие позиции на всех уровнях) и HRD Antwerp (Бельгия). Сертификат, выданный ювелиром от имени ювелирного магазина, значит столько же, сколько чистый лист бумаги, иначе говоря, такой сертификат вообще ничто. Кроме того, следует удостовериться, что сертификат не старше пяти лет: технология и высокоточное оборудование, используемые для измерения качества бриллианта, год от года улучшаются, и эти изменения влияют на окончательные результаты. Is the quality of the diamond we are buying high enough for the price we are paying?

How can we know that the diamond we are buying is being sold at a good price?

In the end, a diamond is forever, and before buying one we should consider many more factors than those generally explained to us by the leading jewellery brands and professionals.

With that in mind, we consulted jeweller Pepe De La Fuente in his Puerto Banús (Marbella) showroom, and he shed some light on the confusion that tends to surround the world of diamonds. With the benefit of 20 years’ experience in the industry as a wholesaler, he was able to provide us with some valuable advice on how to go about buying this gemstone.

The Dilemma

When we visit a jewellery store, usually the only information they give us about the diamond is its weight, colour and purity. And, as a result of this lack of information (always due to lack of awareness – and often self interest), we are faced with a significant difference in prices… without any apparent reason, but always the case.

The first step, before anything else…

When buying a diamond of more than 0.30 carats (1 carat = 0.2 grams), we should always insist on a Gemmological Certificate, and none are worth anything if they don’t come from the only two authorities recognised internationally: GIA in the United States (the one best positioned at all levels) and HRD Antwerp. A certificate issued by the jeweller in the name of their jewellery store has the same value as a blank piece of paper: i.e. nothing at all.

In addition, we should make certain the certificate is no older than five years, as the technology and precision equipment used to measure a diamond’s quality improves over the years, and that influences the final results.

These certificates provide all the information required to value a diamond: apart from its weight, colour and purity, they detail four additional aspects (proportions, symmetry, polishing and fluorescence), which make a diamond worth up to 50 per cent more or less than another one of the same weight, colour and purity.

Далее идут VVs1 (едва-едва заметные 1), VVs2, Vs1 (едва заметные 1), VS2, Si1 (небольшие включения 1), Si2, P1 (piqué 1), Р2 и P3. Как сравнить цены...

Единственный способ сравнить цены на бриллианты – сравнить показатели каждого бриллианта (сертификаты HRD и GIA отличаются). Бриллиант с пропорциями Excellent ценится не так же, как с пропорциями Very Good. Бриллиант с флуоресценцией Slight не стоит столько же, сколько бриллиант с флуоресценцией Medium. Стоимость бриллианта чистоты Si1 с заметными включениями не равна стоимости бриллианта Si1, в котором включение не видны глазу.

Colour: This is shown using letters from the alphabet (apart from “A”, “B” and “C”), from “D” to “Z”. The “D” corresponds to the whitest colour, and from “I” the diamond begins to turn yellow gently and gradually before becoming extremely yellow.

Purity: “Flawless”, or “IF, is the best degree, and means that the stone has no inclusion or impurity on being examined under a lens that amplifies it 10 times. From that classification, we move on to VVs1 (very very small 1), VVs2, Vs1 (Very small 1), Vs2, Si1 (slight inclusion 1), Si2, P1 (piqué 1), P2 y P3.

Proportions: This is calculated taking into account all the diamond’s possible measurements (height, length, width, angles and thickness) in all its parts… crown (upper part), girdle (middle part) and pavilion (lower part). It is classified as “Excellent”, “Very Good” or “Good”. A “Good” proportion can reduce the price of a diamond of the same weight, colour and purity by up to 30 per cent.

Symmetry: This will be “Excellent” when all facets of the crown coincide perfectly with the facets of the pavilion. It is classified as Excellent”, “Very Good”, or “Good”. A “Good” symmetry can reduce the price of a diamond of the same weight, colour and purity by up to 20 per cent.

Polishing: This can also be classified as “Excellent”, “Very Good” or “Good”. An “Excellent” polishing can increase the price of a diamond between three and five per cent compared with a “Very Good” stone, although no gemmologist is able to determine its classification just by looking at the diamond. This is the aspect that least influences the price of a diamond.

Fluorescence: This is a property some diamonds have when exposed to the sun’s ultra-violet light. It is classified as “Non” (it doesn’t have any), “Slight” (very light), “Medium” and “Strong”. If a diamond is “Strong” or “Medium” for colours ranging from “I” up to “D”, the price could drop by as much as 30 per cent compared with a diamond of the same weight, colour and purity. From “J” to lower letters, the price is barely affected – some stones visually improve their colour, and slightly their price.

How to compare prices…

The only way to compare prices is to do so under the same conditions for each one: an HRD certificate is not the same as a GIA document.

A diamond with “Excellent” proportions” is not valued the same as a “Very Good” one. A diamond classified with “Slight” fluorescence is not worth the same as another stone with “Medium” fluorescence.

One rated as “Si1”, in which the inclusion is visible to the eye, does not have the same value as a “Si1” diamond, in which the inclusion is not visible to the eye.

Recommendations • Colour: choose a diamond between “F” and “I” colour.

• Purity: between “Vs1” (very clean) and “Si1” (only if the later is “Good” – with no inclusions visible to the eye).

• Proportions: always “Excellent” or “Very Good”.

• Symmetry: always “Excellent” or “Very Good”.

• Polishing: always “Excellent” or “Very Good”.

Omega’s heritage celebrations began with the introduction of the “First Omega in Space” and the Speedmaster ’57, and they are continuing with the re-launch of the brand’s legendary professional divers’ watch.

Hollywood artist on a globetrotting quest for light and mystery As a 17-year-old in Treviso (near Venice), Renato Casaro spent his Sundays painting billboards for the local cinema and foyer in exchange for free admission.

As images of “Tarzan”, “The Wild West”, “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” and “Hatari” spread across the silver screen, the young Italian nurtured a fascination for painting, cinema and nature and a thirst for adventure that later influenced his life in a decisive fashion and enabled him to turn a hobby into a lucrative and rewarding career.

He eventually moved to Rome to become a movie poster painter and, determined to see and experience these cinematic settings with his own eyes, he began his global travels “in search of the light”.

After several years as a movie painter, receiving numerous awards along the way, he achieved international recognition as a movie poster artist. For more than 30 years Casaro created original images for the major film studios to promote blockbuster movies including “Amadeus“, “Dances With Wolves”, “The Name Of The Rose“, “Never Say Never Again“, “Nikita“, “Once Upon A Time In America”, “Rambo“ and “The Last Emperor”.

Today many of his works have become cult items, highly sought-after by collectors and a part of film history themselves.

Meanwhile, in every spare minute, he worked on putting his travel experience onto canvas.

In l985, Casaro realised a long-time dream with his “Painted Movies” cycle, visual compositions that capture the myth of film. Some are inspired by the Old Masters of the Italian Renaissance, declaring his love for both film legends and the art of painting. While his movie posters are visualised fantasies, his “Painted Movies” are fantastic and personal visions of Casaro’s favourite movies and film stars, such as Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo, Sophia Loren, James Dean, Jean Gabin and Humphrey Bogart – immortalised, for example, in his “Invitation”, “100 Years of Films” and “Paradise View” paintings.

Still restless and searching for new impressions, Casaro found a different light in the African bush and the wide desert skies of the Middle East. His mysterious and limitless African wildlife paintings and desert scenes are complemented by camels, falcons, Bedouins and horses.

Andalucía then beckoned… After living for a few years on the Costa del Sol – with its bright clear light – his most recent paintings show Andalucian women posing in traditional attitudes against the detailed backgrounds of historic Moorish architecture.

According to Prof. Dr. Eugenio Manzato, director of the Civic Museums in Treviso, “Renato Casaro is one of the few movie painters who is capable of working out the character of a film, of translating the character of a film into a synthesis of extraordinarily communicative efficiency, simultaneously combined with the highest degree of compositional elegance.

“The first thing you notice about Casaro’s work is his extraordinary ability to draw, an ability worthy of the old masters.

If Casaro had lived around 1800, he would have been a great portrait painter.

“His portraits are obviously realistic renderings, but at the same time they are enigmatic and full of fascination. They are capable of recreating personality.

A trip to restore the body, mind and spirit, but also to enjoy other sensations and emotions – as our journey doubles as a thrilling testdrive behind the wheels of three Bentley jewels.

We arrive at C. de Salamanca’s premises in Marbella to learn what our “mounts”, brought expressly for this purpose from Bentley’s headquarters in Crewe, will be: the Bentley Continental GT V8 S, recently presented at the Geneva International Motor Show, together with the new Flying Spur W12 and the Mulsanne. Three models that cover the whole motoring spectrum… from ultra-sporty to the pleasure of enjoying the most sensational luxury.

We begin our journey on the winding road to Ronda, in the direction of Carratraca, a small village in the Málaga mountains, famous for its therapeutic thermal waters that have been used since Roman times.

This route gives us the opportunity of checking out the distinctive personality of each car. The Continental is the essence of a Gran Turismo. Its four-litre 521Hp engine, smaller than the W12 version, would normally be noticeable, but Bentley have managed to give it very similar performance characteristics, with a greater sense of agility, vigour and stability, together with exceptional braking capabilities thanks to its ceramic brakes. Furthermore, the quality of its finish, its comfort and a surprisingly large boot make this vehicle an outstanding option for devouring kilometres.

On the other side of the coin is the Mulsanne. Created as a maximum expression of luxury, its nearly six and half metres of length are no obstacle for negotiating the tight curves along our route: passengers can enjoy a massage in their seats without spilling a drop of the champagne that rests snugly in armrest chillers. Pure stability.

A 6752cc, 505Hp and 1020Nm engine propels the 2,700-kilogram Mulsanne into an amazing burst of power: Bentley’s flagship model has a good-natured personality, but also a strong character.

As for the new Flying Spur W12… well, it seems as though Bentley, with this car, have found the perfect solution for those faced with the dilemma of choosing between the sporty sensations of the Continental and the sumptuousness of the Mulsanne. Quite simply, it combines the best of both worlds. A fierce engine that generates 616Hp of power guarantees an exciting drive, while its technology, features and artisanal quality ensure pure enjoyment. The Flying Spur has everything, although this raises a difficult question: drive or savour it as a passenger?

After this enlivening test-drive, we finally reach our destination full of adrenalin. We are met by Andrea Loi, resident manager of Villa Padierna Thermas Hotel, together with the Villa Padierna general manager, Gian Luigi Epis, who have prepared a stay designed to help us relax, balance our bodies, and nourish and revitalise ourselves.

The hotel is located in a stunning rural setting and comprises 43 rooms divided into 11 Classic, 26 Deluxe, three Junior Suites and three Suites. All are decorated in a modern style, with every comfort and convenience. But a word of warning: by default, there is no internet connection, unless absolutely necessary. In addition, they don’t serve alcohol in the hotel and the doors close at 10pm. At Villa Padierna, they are very serious about helping us restore or body and mind.

After settling in, we begin the experience that has brought us to Carratraca: the thermal circuit. The spa extends over 1,763 square metres, divided into three different storeys with a total of 21 treatment rooms.

Caviar lovers are being offered a rare opportunity to enjoy an exclusive tasting in a natural setting in the heart of Spain’s most renowned production facility.

Several different options are available for visitors to Caviar de Riofrío (between Málaga and Granada), including caviar tasting, sturgeon visit and lunch.

Sturgeon visit and caviar tasting: arranged by appointment for a minimum of four people, the experience includes a visit to a special private area that is normally never open to the public. Guests can learn about sturgeon breeding, watch wonderful adult specimens over 20 years old and weighing 60 kilograms – “real living dinosaurs” – and savour a wonderful caviar tasting led by professionals with more than 30 years of experience in the industry.

Depending on weather conditions, the tasting can be enjoyed outside under centennial walnut trees overlooking sturgeon ponds, or indoors in an attractive, cosy and recently-built tasting room.

Unique Experience: these tasting options vary depending on product quantity and the types of caviar and accompanying beverages, including organic, traditional, Russian style and Payusnaya caviar, caviar dice, Champagne Taittinger, Cava Robert J. Mur and vodka.

Caviar tasting with lunch: for a minimum of four people, by appointment, the tasting and lunch are held under old walnut trees overlooking the sturgeon ponds, with a served table including everything offered in the caviar tasting and a lunch of starters (marinated trout eggs, smoked sturgeon, sturgeon carpaccio, candied sturgeon, “porra” with “Alma de Caviar”, ham and cheese), main dish (eggs with Alma and Sturgeon Shashlik), typical sweets, wine,

champagne, Alhambra 1925 beer, and long drinks and after-lunch beverages (rum, gin, and caviar dice with vodka).

Essence Experience: for groups of a maximum of eight people, the visit covers everything offered in the caviar tasting as well as entry into the sturgeon ponds with waders, including animal “hypnosis”, manual selection of a female sturgeon, and ultrasound of the female sturgeon.

(The handling of animals, female selection and ultrasound are all carried out under the supervision and guidance of technical staff.)

Alma Experience: for groups of up to four people, this memorable visit includes everything offered in the Essence experience, plus caviar elaboration of the female selected by the visitor (always under the direction of specialists), caviar labelled certifying that it has been prepared by the customer, themed food, and a table covering with vodka and caviar dice.

After a visit you also will be able to buy all products you like directly from the factory shop.

Летний турнир в Santa María Club И снова лучшие игроки мира сражаются летом на полях для игры в поло на Land Rover International Tournament в Сотогранде. Турнир на полях Лос-Пинос, принадлежащих Santa Maria Polo Club, начался в июле и продлится до конца августа. В престижном международном турнире, проходящем в 43-й раз, команды соревнуются в трех категориях (высокий, средний и низкий гандикап): 32 команды из 17 стран плюс фанаты, прибывающие со всего мира. Sotogrande Polo

The world’s top players are once again in action on Sotogrande’s polo fields this summer competing in the Land Rover International Tournament. The event began on Santa Maria Polo Club’s Los Pinos fields in July and continues through to the end of August.

Thirty-two teams are competing in three categories (high, medium and low handicap), from 17 different countries, with fans also travelling from around the world to attend the 43rd edition of this premier international tournament.

This year also includes an extended commercial and entertainment programme, highlighted by the customary shopping village and new pop-up stores, a new restaurant opened by Sodexo Prestige, the tournament’s official caterers, and an exclusive post-match meeting point sponsored by the Bacardi Group.

The first polo field was built in Sotogrande in 1965 and since then Santa María has become one of the top-ranked polo clubs in the world, with nine worldclass polo fields, high-class stables, a polo school, a 2,500 square metre pavilion and parking for over 1,000 vehicles.
