The Parks and Recreation Department plans and directs year round recreational programs and operations. The Director of Parks and Recreation supervises an extensive seasonal staff in coordinating the many activities planned and related to recreation fields. THE CITY

Grosse Pointe Park is a city bordering on Detroit with frontage on southern Lake Saint Clair. It is the westernmost of the noted Grosse Pointe suburbs, with the oldest overall housing stock of the five cities. Patterson Park, located at the foot of Three Mile Drive and Essex, is a year round facility which offers many activities for Grosse Pointe Park families. Facilities include a covered picnic shelter, a splash pad, two regulation tennis courts, a playground playscape, bocce ball court, putting green practice facility, nature trail, exercise course, a covered pavilion and lake access for non-motorized watercraft, such as windsurfers and kayaks. Windmill Pointe Park, located at Barrington and Windmill Pointe Drive, is a year round facility which offers many activities for Grosse Pointe Park families. THE CITY

Grosse Pointe Shores: With only 1.1 square miles land area, the city is the smallest of the five Grosse Pointe communities. The city, which is entirely residential, had a population of 3,008 at the 2010 census.

Grosse Pointe Shores was incorporated as a village in 1911. On February 24, 2009,

the residents of Grosse Pointe Shores voted to incorporate as a city with the name “Village of Grosse Pointe Shores, A Michigan City,” which took place on April 1. Prior to incorporation as a city, the village encompassed the entire area of two small townships.

Osius Municipal Park, located at 800 Lake Shore Rd., is a year round facility which offers many activities for Grosse Pointe Shores families. The facilities include; tennis courts, basketball court, playscapes, swimming pool, wading pool, pavilions, picnic areas and an updated marina.

CITY HISTORY

The City of Grosse Pointe Woods was originally incorporated in 1927 and was known as the Village of Lochmoor. In 1939, the Village of Lochmoor became the Village of Grosse Pointe Woods and on December 11, 1950, was incorporated as the City of Grosse Pointe Woods, a Home Rule City. The city covers an area of 3.28 square miles.

Lake Front Park, located at 23000 E Jefferson, is a year round facility which offers many activities for Grosse Pointe Woods families. The facilities include an Olympic size pool, wading & baby pools, waterslide, 780 feet of boardwalk, fishing terrace, a large playscape, an outdoor basketball court, 2 bocce courts, and 2 shuffleboard courts, a volleyball court and 10 outdoor tennis courts. The Activities Building offers: Gym halfcourt basketball, Racquetball court and you can also play pool, foosball, air hockey, indoor shuffleboard, ping-pong, darts, bocce ball, or use the treadmills & exercise bicycles. There is also a marina, walking path and dog park.

Penicillin comes into use.

Prepaid group healthcare begins, seen as radical.

During the 2nd World War, wage and price controls are placed on American employers. To compete for workers, companies begin to o er health bene ts, giving rise to the employer-based system in place today.

President Roosevelt asks Congress for “economic bill of rights,” including right to adequate medical care. President Truman o ers national health program plan, proposing a single system that would include all of American society.

Truman’s plan is denounced by the American Medical Association (AMA) , and is called a Communist plot by a House subcommittee.

1940’S - 2000’S 1940 1950

At the start of the decade, national health care expenditures are 4.5 percent of the Gross National Product.

Attention turns to Korea and away from health reform; America will have a system of private insurance for those who can a ord it and welfare services for the poor.

Federal responsibility for the sick poor is rmly established.

Many legislative proposals are made for di erent approaches to hospital insurance, but none succeed.

Many more medications are available now to treat a range of diseases, including infections, glaucoma, and arthritis, and new vaccines become available that prevent dreaded childhood diseases, including polio. e rst successful organ transplant is performed.

In the 1950s, the price of hospital care doubled. Now in the early 1960s, those outside the workplace, especially the elderly, have di culty a ording insurance.

Over 700 insurance companies selling health insurance.

Concern about a “doctor shortage” and the need for more “health manpower” leads to federal measures to expand education in the health professions.

Major medical insurance endorses high-cost medicine.

President Lyndon Johnson signs Medicare and Medicaid into law. “Compulsory Health Insurance” advocates are no longer optimistic’.

e number of doctors reporting themselves as full-time specialists grows from 55% in 1960 to 69%.

President Richard Nixon renames prepaid group health care plans as health maintenance organizations (HMOs), with legislation that provides federal endorsement, certi cation, and assistance.

Healthcare costs are escalating rapidly, partially due to unexpectedly high Medicare expenditures, rapid in ation in the economy, expansion of hospital expenses and pro ts, and changes in medical care including greater use of technology, medications, and conservative approaches to treatment. American medicine is now seen as in crisis.

President Nixon’s plan for national health insurance rejected by liberals & labor unions, but his “War on Cancer” centralizes research at the NIH.

e number of women entering the medical profession rises dramatically. In 1970, 9% of medical students are women; by the end of the decade, the proportion exceeds 25%.

Corporations begin to integrate the hospital system (previously a decentralized structure), enter many other healthcare-related businesses, and consolidate control. Overall, there is a shi toward privatization and corporatization of healthcare.

Under President Reagan, Medicare shi s to payment by diagnosis (DRG) instead of by treatment. Private plans quickly follow suit.

Growing complaints by insurance companies that the traditional fee-forservice method of payment to doctors is being exploited.

“Capitation” payments to doctors become more common.

Health care costs rise at double the rate of in ation.

Expansion of managed care helps to moderate increases in health care costs.

Federal health care reform legislation fails again to pass in the U.S. Congress.

Get moving: multiple studies have shown that exercise can significantly reduce chronic pain, increase nerve function and decrease neuropathy symptoms, and even reduce depression and anxiety that’s so common in chronic pain sufferers.

When you’re in severe pain, exercise seems impossible. But it’s not! The key is to start slow, increase gradually, and respect (and accept) your body’s limits.

If you’re ambulatory, start with short walks. Can you walk from your bed to your front door? Can you make it around the block? If you’re a wheelchair user, can you make it to the front door? Around the block?

exercise when you’re in excruciating pain. It’s not a magical cure, but it has the potential to really help. Why not find out for yourself?

1. Do I really need this test or procedure? Medical tests help you and your doctor or other health provider decide how to treat a problem. And medical procedures help to actually treat it.

2. What are the risks? Will there be side effects? What are the chances of getting results that aren’t accurate? Could that lead to more testing or another procedure?

3. Are there simpler, safer options? Sometimes all you need to do is make lifestyle changes, such as eating healthier food or exercising more.

4. What happens if I don’t do anything? Ask if your condition might get worse — or better — if you don’t have the test or procedure right away.

5. How much does it cost? Ask if there are less-expensive tests, treatments or procedures, what your insurance may cover, and about generic drugs instead of brand-name drugs.

NURSING & HOME CARE

1940s

With the first half of the 1940s dominated by World War II, fashion stalled. Both men and women were often seen in their uniforms during the war and, if they were not, their clothing styles were dictated by rationing and Utility clothing. After the war, Christian Dior launched the New Look in Paris, returning women’s fashion to an overtly feminine silhouette, while men, women, and children’s clothing all began to lean towards the sporty, casual American Look.

Fashion in the 1950s saw a clear gender divide. While men and boy’s fashion moved towards a more casual dayto-day style, women and girl’s fashion prioritized elegance, formality, and perfectly matched accessories. Couture womenswear saw rapid change with new designers such as Cristobal Balenciaga and Hubert de Givenchy disrupting the overtly feminine silhouette popularized by Christian Dior while novel prints and colors marked a playfulness in fashion for both men and women.

Fashion in the 1960s became progressively more casual across all genders and ages. Womenswear followed three broad trends: a continuation of the previous decade’s ladylike elegance, the youthful styles of Mary Quant and the Space Age influence, and the late 1960s “hippie” style. Menswear saw an increasing amount of color and pattern, military influence, and new fashion icons in the form of rock stars. Children’s wear saw less change, but also became more casual and bright in color and pattern.

Seventies fashion saw bold colors and patterns take center stage. Women’s fashion looked back to the 1940s by day and pumped up the glamour by night. Men had an array of suit types to choose from and favored colorful plaids. Children’s fashion followed adult fashion with bold plaids and bright colors with the distinction between genders lessening throughout the decade.

1990s

In the 1980s, bigger meant better across the board in fashion. From women’s shoulder pads to men’s power suits to bold colors and patterns for men, women and children, there was nothing understated about fashion in the eighties.

As the 20th century came to a close, fashion reached its most casual. Both men and women adopted grunge fashion in the early part of the decade and loose, oversized clothing and jeans became staples. As the decade progressed, women’s fashion became more streamlined as minimalism became de rigueur, while children’s clothing often featured popular Disney characters.

1980s 2000s

As the new decade and millennium dawned, fashion largely continued along the same trajectory that had started in the late 1990s. However, in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, fashion returned to conservatism. With the rise of new technology, fashion spread quickly and celebrities played a key role in consumer choices as images were shared through the internet instantly. While popular styles changed over the years, one item remained ubiquitous throughout the decade: denim jeans.

One of the biggest trends of the decade, at least for the latter half, is the statement sleeves! The sleeves have gone through several different phases, spanning from ham sleeves to trumpet sleeves and puffy sleeves. The sleeves have mainly been done in combination with knitted sweaters, crop tops and blouses, but also dresses and shirts have had their versions. Statement sleeves are still today a major fashion trend and nothing seems to be changing that anytime soon.

A Brief History of the Pointes

As one of the oldest communities in the Midwest, Grosse Pointe has seen many changes. For the past 75 years “the little Blue Book” has been a part of the community and has been changing as well.

We hope you will enjoy this special edition as we look back at the past 75 years in photos and in recognition of our many clients. We thank the Grosse Pointe Historical Society and Grosse Pointe Woods Historical Commission for many of the photographs and historical information used in this book.

We would also like to thank the residents who have relied on “the little Blue Book” for the past 75 years, as well as those of you who are new to the directory. Please be sure to let our advertisers know you found them in “the little Blue Book”

The postwar 40’s and 50’s saw significant growth in population in Grosse Pointe, and both schools and churches grew exponentially. The challenges of the 60’s & 70’s, from the Vietnam War, racial injustice, illegal drugs, and a change in family values, brought forth a need for new community agencies.

The Northeast Guidance Center, Family Life Education Center (FLEC), Grosse Pointe Interfaith Center for Racial Justice were founded, just to name a few.

In 1949, The Alger House portion of the Grosse Pointe War Memorial was dedicated for a twofold purpose: to serve as a perpetual memorial to the 3,500 Grosse Pointers who served and the 126 who died in World War II; and it was to serve as a continuing center for educational and charitable activities of the Grosse Pointe community. The War Memorial is unusual –some say unique – because of its dual use.

The 70’s also saw the highest lake levels in over 100 years, fuel prices skyrocket, and as the demand for housing continued, subdivisions replaced large estates.

The 80’s saw Grosse Pointe become increasingly independent of Detroit, house prices soared and commercial districts were modernized as specialty shops moved in. The 80’s and 90’s saw local cultural groups flourish as local governments made major changes, including Grosse Pointe City approving it’s first post prohibition liquor sale by the glass.

After surviving Y2K, facing a vulnerable national economy, decreased state support for schools and the lowest lake levels in more than 60 years, the community seemed to be stabilizing

in 2000. Today, as we witness the rebirth of our neighboring Detroit, community spirit and pride is at an all time high.

We, at “the little Blue Book”, look forward to continuing to work with and support this amazing community and the businesses and residents we have grown so fond of.

Before the 18th century, most of the world’s diamonds were found in India.

Chains founded in the 1940s

The early 1940’s were dominated by World War II and its impact on the United States as well as many countries throughout the world. During a few of the war years, automobile production ceased and many Americans experienced hardships that included rationing of gasoline and food supplies.

As the war came to an end, the United States and the USSR emerged as world superpowers. Soldiers regained their jobs upon returning and many benefited from a paid college education as a result of the GI Bill of Rights. In 1949, three times as many college degrees were conferred as in 1940. The baby boom was underway and new suburban communities were growing rapidly. Home ownership became accessible to a large number of middle class Americans for the first time. The post –World War II economic boom, which brought about high economic growth worldwide, would last into the early 1970’s.

Some businesses that began in the 1940’s and are still around today include:

Coach, Talbots, Buckle Inc, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Jo-Ann Stores Inc., Lowe’s and the most surprising was Fredericks of Hollywood, which would soon introduce the world’s first pushup bra. McDonalds, Dairy Queen, Baskin-Robbins, In-N-Out Burgers & Long John Silver’s also began in the 1940’s.

1968 - The duo sold the directory to Parish Publictions, who is best known for producing church bulletins. And by the mid 70’s, the publishers decided it did not fit their portfolio.

Through the years

1948 - the Grosse pointe Business and Professional Telephone Directory is born. It originated with Matthew Gobel, an advertising manager with the Grosse Pointe News, and Diamond Phillips, a prominent local restaurateur.

1977 - Grosse Pointe native Albert J. “Bud” Towar, having retired from a rollercoaster career in auto leasing, was looking for something to supplement his green fees. He took a chance and purchased the small company.

1989 - Buds daughter Kim returned home following an eight-year stint in Utah. Shortly after her return, Bud experienced some health challenges and Kim took over the helm with the guidance of both Bud and Jeanne.

2018 - Google is here to stay and so is “the little Blue Book”. In this age of “surfing”, we are told that our little book is still the most trusted resource in our community. And we thank you for that! While you’re surfing, hop over and take a look at bluebooklocal.com

2023 - We’ve had a couple of very challenging years, as everyone has. But terrific things have happened as well and we are feeling very grateful!

We have some new members of our Blue Book family, we launched a blue book app, and have made many new client-friends. And celebrating 75 years of serving this incredible community is the greatest blessing of all. Here’s to 75
