CONTENTS volunteers, and board members are more focused than ever on making Tower Hill an even more inclusive and welcoming place and we’re working harder than ever to improve people’s lives through plants and nature both at our Boylston home and beyond.

I’m so excited for spring, as I’m sure you are too. A lot has happened since our field of daffodils last bloomed. Over the last year we’ve been through many ups and downs that have made our Tower Hill community closer, stronger, and more resilient. We’re grateful so many of you have found peace and joy in our gardens and that our plants and programs have provided some relief for our guests during a challenging year for everyone. At Tower Hill, staff,

SPRING AHEAD

If you’re able to visit us in 2021, you’ll notice lots of activity on the western side of our property (closest to the Wachusett Reservoir). While our gardens will be as gorgeous as ever, our exhibits as engaging as ever, and our woodlands more inviting than ever – construction will be ongoing this year as we seek to improve our entry experience and create a woodland garden geared to children and the young at heart. We hope you are as excited about the construction progress as we are. If all goes according to plan, the Ramble will be complete by this winter. You’ll also find we’re doubling our parking spaces, adding accessible paths, and building a beautiful boardwalk along Pliny’s Allée. If you’d like to learn about ways you can contribute, please feel free to reach out or visit towerhillbg.org. Grace C. Elton chief executive officer tower hill botanic garden

RESTORING THE ORCHARD

IT IS OFTEN SAID CHANGE IS THE ONLY CONSTANT. In a garden, the abstract concept of “time” is illustrated by the physical change that happens regularly and constantly as we progress from one season to the next. We celebrate and find comfort in the regularity of seasonal change. Although spring flowers are fleeting, we know that as their colors fade, the warmer temperatures and joys of summer are next. As we marvel at the brilliance of fall foliage, we know that the icy gray tones of winter are close at hand. And just when we think we cannot handle another nor’easter, snowdrops and crocuses remind us that spring is almost here. Change can be managed or chaotic, planned or unexpected, but it is always there. The past year taught all of us exactly how much change we can handle when our hands are forced. We adapted, learned to manage life in the strangest times most of us have ever known, and looked forward to the change that will allow us to put masks away for good. While the world seemed to stand still, the garden kept growing, giving us hope and reminding us that change can be an intensely positive force. This spring, we get to celebrate change in the form of renewal when we replant the Harrington Orchard. Just more than two years after the restoration effort began, the young saplings grown from scionwood collected from the old apple trees in the collection are ready to be planted in their permanent homes in the garden.

To prepare for our young saplings, this winter we installed irrigation. Each new tree will have its own irrigation head, allowing us to efficiently deliver water to feed the development of a healthy root system without encouraging disease. The irrigation will be used for establishing these young saplings and to provide supplemental water during times of drought after establishment. Prior to planting, we will till the soil and add compost to create a healthy, productive root zone for our young trees. Next to water, building healthy, fertile soil is the most important factor in ensuring that our new trees will be successful. The layout of the collection will be slightly different from the previous layout. Trees will be planted on either side of the driveway as they were traditionally. We also will plant a single row of trees along the east side of Orchard Road, expanding the footprint of the collection and accommodating for some loss of space because of our expanded parking. Trees on standard rootstocks that can grow to as high as 40 feet also will be planted along the driveway south of the entrance to Orchard Road. As they grow and mature, they will form a beautiful allee lining the entry drive, and welcoming guests to Tower Hill. After all the preparation, a team of staff and volunteers will plant our renewed orchard in early spring, as soon as conditions allow. Before too long, we’ll be celebrating the change of seasons watching Davenport’s collection of heirloom apples delight us with spring flowers, and welcoming that day when we can enjoy the fruits of his labor again here in the garden.

UITS OF

IENCE BY ALI KANE GRANTS MANAGER DEVELOPMENT & INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT

“YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH TOWER HILL MEANS TO ME,” ONE MEMBER WROTE THIS WINTER, “how much I delight to say hello to each blossom, like a long lost relative. I am grateful and fortunate to be the recipient of beauty, surprise, and love.” 2020 was a year of resiliency for Tower Hill and it is we that want to convey to you how much you mean to us. We are so grateful that in the face of a global pandemic, calls for racial justice, and mounting divides across the nation, that the Garden could provide a place of inspiration, respite, and wonder. 2020 demanded our strength, but we must continue to commit to taking care of this world, just as we do each other. Resiliency is at the core of Tower Hill Botanic Garden. Just like the daffodils that push through the cold and frost to bring brilliant yellow to the Daffodil Field in April, the Garden we know and love has preserved through this year. This year, Tower Hill resolves to embrace its resilience, forged by the support of a generous and passionate community to be part of the solution by responding to the many challenges our earth faces. “We are awake to the issues, but many of us are asking the same question: ‘What can we do?’” a past trustee wrote. “I always think of education. In Tower Hill’s case, that is giving young people an opportunity to connect with knowledge and plants and getting their hands in the soil.” By providing educational programs and sharing knowledge through exhibits, Tower Hill can provide essential knowledge to the community about critical environmental threats and how we can combat them. We can inspire appreciation for the natural world in our youngest members by connecting them with horticulture through virtual and hands-on classes.

“You have truly provided my family with much needed hope. Thank you to Tower Hill for providing that glimmer of hope.” TOWER HILL MEMBER

“I love to see my son happy and hear about his life experiences,” a member shared. “These are the most important years of his life that will hopefully mold him into a great man.” Beyond formal classes, Tower Hill is committed to adopting sustainable horticulture practices throughout its formal gardens and natural trails. Behind these gorgeous displays is an obligation to take care of the Earth from which these flowers, shrubs, and trees grow. The gardens grow regardless of the pandemic or politics, it perseveres through New England winters, and it struggles through climate change, Asian Longhorned beetle, and fire blight. We can find our own strength in the Garden during these difficult times, but we must give back by educating ourselves and our neighbors about sustainability and conservation.

All of this comes together when we take in the magnificent glory of Wachusett Reservoir from the Belvedere, when we are mesmerized by the illuminated ash tree in the Garden Within Reach, when we smell the sweet pink cherry blossoms in the Lawn Garden, when we are surprised by the burst of Pliny’s Fountain. This is our Tower Hill, this is our planet. We can learn from it and we will take care of it. “I am so grateful to all at Tower Hill for providing a safe place for me to see my grandchildren,” a member expressed. “You have truly provided my family with much needed hope. It’s human nature to desire something and expect its fulfillment. Thank you to Tower Hill for providing that glimmer of hope.”
