Learn how to use existing camera gear to make spectacular macro photographs. After a short lecture, class will move outside to practice technique.

Learn to use colored pencils to create a detailed portrait of this graceful perennial; participants will practice techniques for achieving accurate color, value, and proportion. All levels welcome.

Vermont artist Andrienne Ginter’s intricate papercut art explores the reoccurring oddities and fascinations of the natural world. Exhibit runs through September 28.

Capture the Summer Harvest Saturday, August 9, 9:30am–12:30pm Member $60, Non-member $75 instructor: Betsy Williams

Learn how to air dry, silica dry, and dehydrate flowers and the step-by-step tricks of preserving the green leaves of summer with glycerin and the many ways to keep and package herbs for the winter kitchen. Each student will also make a bottle of herb vinegar to take home. All supplies included.

Handmade for the Garden: Talk and Book Signing Wednesday, August 13, 7pm Free with admission presenter: Susan Guagliumi

Gardeners of all skill levels will discover artful ways to beautify their gardens with handmade objects. A book-signing of Handmade for the Garden (Stewart Tabori and Chang, 2014) will follow.

Spend mornings sketching and afternoons working indoors. Choice of medium is yours. Instruction covers techniques of botanical drawing and painting in colored pencil and watercolor. All levels welcome.

Apples have played an important role in celebrations for more than 2,000 years. Discover apple history and folklore and learn its place in magical traditions; watch demonstrations and create an apple candle and potpourri to take home.

Join Celestine Maddy, founder of Wilder Quarterly, a genre-bending publication aimed at the rapidly growing new generation of gardeners, capturing horticulture through the lens of food, design, and travel. Celestine was voted by Fast Company magazine as one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business in 2012.

Spend an evening learning about and observing moths. Bring a camera and flashlight. For all ages; children must be accompanied by an adult.

Monthly programs are designed for children ages 3–5 with an adult. Begin inside with an activity and storytime, then step outside to discover the summertime garden. Programs held rain or shine.

Learn how you can attract butterflies to your own gardens as we look for Red-spotted Admirals or a Silver-spotted Skipper. Please bring close-focus binoculars if you have them.

This six-week program introduces preschoolers ages 3–5 to the world of plants and nature. Classes take place in the Youth Garden and include hands-on activities or crafts and a story. Bring your favorite teddy bear to the 2nd Annual Teddy Bear Picnic and celebrate National Honey Bee Day! Pack a picnic and learn about bees, honey, and their importance to gardens. Crafts, special treats, and a Teddy Bear parade at 2pm.

Go on a moonlit adventure looking and listening for the frogs that live in the ponds and water gardens at Tower Hill. For all ages with parent or caregiver.

Children will make and take their very own flower press and learn the technique of pressing flowers and leaves. For all ages; pre-registration is required. Register early; past classes have sold out quickly.

Even though the garden is winding down for the season, there is still work to be done! Get your hands dirty as we dig for potatoes, harvest vegetables, and empty the compost bin. The event will conclude wtih a garden-inspired craft.

Naturalist photographer Samuel Jaffe grew up in Eastern Massachusetts chasing birds, mucking through ponds, and turning over leaves. Over the last five years he has developed a project to raise and photograph all of the more charismatic native caterpillars. The project has blossomed and expanded into caterpillar exhibits, shows, walks, and talks, culminating in the creation of The Caterpillar Lab. The Lab returns to Tower HIll for a unique display of these fascinating and beautiful creatures. Enjoy a close-up look at some of the most spectacular live caterpillars found in New England.
