[ letter from the editor ] Our family is hosting an out-of-town visitor, a native of Belarus. You’d think it would be easy to map out an itinerary for that 48-hour visit. But there is so much to show off, I don’t where to begin. She’s heard about the Arch, so that’s at the top of the list. Then, of course, Forest Park and its various attractions—the Zoo, World’s Fair Pavilion, Muny amphitheater, Art Museum— are musts; after all, our urban playground is 50 percent bigger than Central Park. But I’m kind of partial to the lesser-known jewels. Isn’t it fascinating that we have one of the best-preserved Victorian strolling parks (Tower Grove)? And that in its heart sits the oldest greenhouse west of the Mississippi (Piper Palm House)? A walking tour of Lafayette Square will offer a glimpse of 19th- century St. Louis, with brick walks and elegant townhomes boasting 11-foot ceilings, formal parlors and elaborate millwork. We simply can’t miss the Botanical Garden, which impressed Emperor Akihito with its Seiwa-en (the largest Japanese walking garden in North America) of footbridges, dry gravel landscaping and yukimi doro (lanterns). Or my alma mater, Washington University, and its stunning Graham Chapel and Holmes Lounge (never mind that these landmarks may look like neophytes to European eyes). And then there’s food. No visit would be complete without barbecue and some good, old-fashioned Southern comfort food. So Pappy’s and Sweetie Pie’s are on the list, followed by later-night jaunts to the CWE and Ted Drewes, which I will most certainly try to fit in more than once. I really need to have visitors more often. —Dorothy F. Weiner Editor in Chief

ILLUMINATION] GALA
by tony di martino Look around your office, the neighborhood supermarket, or
even your own dining room table. Chances are that you, and everyone you know, has lost a beloved friend or family member to cancer. In the United States alone, more than 1,500 people a day die of the disease, with 1.6 million new cases diagnosed every year. But the 350-plus researchers and physicians at the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center are united in a common goal: to cure cancer, and to provide the best possible care for patients while the search for a cure continues. Siteman, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine, is an international leader in cancer research and care for patients with all types of cancer. Each year nearly 8,000 newly diagnosed individuals and more than 30,000 follow-up patients benefit from the center’s groundbreaking work, as do patients around the world whose tests or treatments were discovered or developed there. It’s the only cancer center in Missouri designated a ‘Comprehensive Cancer Center’ by the National Cancer Institute. Scientists and physicians affiliated with Siteman hold more than $160 million in research and related training grants. “We focus on innovative work that’s rapidly incorporated into lifesaving patient treatments,” says director Dr. Timothy Eberlein. “Thanks to a growing knowledge of the human genome, we’re developing targeted, personalized drugs and regimens for breast cancer, melanoma, gastrointestinal cancers and other forms of the disease. Our goal is to find treatments that are more effective and less toxic today, and to eliminate the threat of cancer entirely in the future.” Siteman patients have the opportunity to participate in more than 240 cutting-edge clinical studies, many of them collaborative efforts with other leading cancer centers throughout the country. The center also provides outreach activities, including cancer screenings and education, for tens of thousands of individuals annually. “But none of our work is possible without continued support from the St. Louis community,” Eberlein says. The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital presents its annual illumination fundraising gala April 20 at The Ritz-Carlton. Special guests are famed entertainer, writer and musician Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers. Chairs are Craig Schnuck and Ron Kruszewski. Presenting sponsor is ACW Alliance, a joint venture of Alberici, Clayco and S.M. Wilson construction firms. Last year’s gala netted $1.9 million for the Foundation’s Cancer Frontier Fund, a campaign to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery. “Drastically slashed budgets are the norm these days, so the money generated by illumination is like manna from heaven,” Eberlein says. “Without it, a lot of ground-breaking research would either slow down or stop in its tracks, and we wouldn’t have enough funding to test potentially lifesaving treatments on patients.” Clinical studies of these treatments are crucial, he adds: “Thanks to advances made possible by research done at Siteman, my colleagues and I are helping patients who wouldn’t have survived a few years ago. We see at least one new miracle every single day. How many people can say that about their jobs?”

Caveat emptor, everyone. Tricky marketing by a Minnesota-based company reportedly has hooked a Ballwin man, 75, among many others in towns we talk about, into monthly

‘memberships’ in various so-called buyer savings programs. But the only thing consumers have noticed is a regular drip-drip-drip from the bank account. After buying a product advertised on TV, the victim says he’s been charged $50 a month by Pulse and Value Plus, combined, but has nothing to show for it. Officials of the parent company, Sempris, claim they have consumers’ assent on tape for memberships in the two aforementioned ‘clubs,’ as well as in two others: Cooking in Style and Budget Savers. Guess what? Presently, Sempris is involved in class action suits in California, Illinois and Michigan. In a surprise midDecember announcement, Chesterfield Mayor Bruce Geiger declared that he has decided not to run for a second term after all. Two city council members have since thrown their hats in the
the city council for several years: Matt Segal since 2009, Bob Nation since 2007. And both promise to rectify Chesterfield’s thorniest fiscal dilemma: convincing the county to revise its taxpooling formula, which the city asserts inequitably redirects millions in sales taxes that it is rightfully owed. The county seat takes great pride in its public art, and with almost a dozen major pieces installed throughout the city, Clayton has nearly as many reasons to attract visitors as Laumeier Sculpture Park! Many of us may have caught most of these, at least out of the corner of an eye while rushing hither and yon on important business, but these landmarks are oh-so-much-better up close and personal—treat yourself to a tour sometime. The puffy horse and rider at Wydown Boulevard and Hanley Road looks as
though it should float away, but it’s bronze and weighs—let’s just say it’s probably really, really heavy. ‘Man on a Horse,’ by Colombian artist Fernando Botero and on long-term loan from the Gateway Foundation, has amused countless drivers and perhaps startled patrons of the nearby Starbucks to a fully alert state. Smack in the center of the business district, hometowner Ernest Trova’s ‘falling man’ series is represented in stainless steel at the corner of N. Brentwood Boulevard and Maryland Avenue. Secured to a tiered base of black granite, six armless figures radiate from a cube, three looking upward, three down. The mirrored surface displays distorted scenes of motorized and pedestrian traffic. To fully engage, one must slow down or stop for reflection at ‘FM6—Walking Jackman.’ Another bronze horse and rider are frozen in fear, albeit gracefully, outside Clayton City Hall. By famed Swedish sculptor Carl Milles, ‘Folke Filbyter’ has been on loan from the Saint Louis Art Museum since 1928. The character appears in Folkungaträdet, a novel by Swedish author and Nobel laureate Verner von Heidenstam. Why are they so terrified? You guessed it—an attached plaque tells the tale. The lady’s shoe outside Brown Shoe Co. is well-heeled, indeed—2,000 cast-aluminum pumps adorn the 8-foot-tall ‘Shoe of Shoes’ by Victoria Fuller. The piece was not a commission from Brown; since 1999 the firm has leased it from Fuller. Again, the piece can be truly appreciated only close up; what the eye interprets from a distance as a whole is an optical illusion; empty space lets the light shine through and the air circulate. Then there’s ‘Dancing Chairs’ outside Clayton School District headquarters… and a battle being waged between 65-million-year-old beasts in Shaw Park. Take a walk and gawk yourself: CHESTERFIELD claytonhistorysociety.org
When you visit the website of The Country Club at the Legends in Eureka nowadays, you may be greeted by an idyllic aerial view of a manicured golf course green surrounded on three sides by water. But that’s the top half of the screen. The bottom is a dark grey that says only, “The Legends is currently closed.” The club’s director tweeted Jan. 31 that private clubs are having trouble breaking even in tough economic times. The tweet was tagged: #ToughDay. Another tweet that day invited the City of Eureka to enjoy its new public park. But its tag was sarcastic: #NoTrespassing. At least one homeowners’ association website tried Feb. 1 to be reassuring, but if there are hard feelings, homeowners in adjacent upscale neighborhoods are certainly justified. Nestled in the elbow formed by the interchange of Interstates 44 and 270, Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center is a (somewhat) quiet sanctuary for hikers, birders and allround nature-lovers that most motorists zip by without even knowing it’s there. That, of course, is a good thing. Three paved trails have a combined length of a little over two miles. The 0.3-mile flat Tanglevine Trail is fully accessible, with signage interpreting various natural aspects. The 1.2-mile Trail of Many Creeks begins with a footbridge high above the road entering the park and features a wildlife observation deck and short loop for less ambitious hikers. The 0.7-mile Broken Ridge Trail is hilly. The site has an outstanding interpretive center. From time to time, birders of a different sort demonstrate an artful sport that archaeologists estimate at 2,700 years old: falconry. This is not a municipal or county park, people; it’s run by the state Department of Conservation. Picnics

Upon leaving Powder Valley, you could continue your day outdoors by taking the Cragwold bridge west over I-270 to Emmenegger Nature Park, whose eastern border is defined by I-270. Both natural areas offer beautiful sunsets across the Meramec River lowlands to the west. Who do you tell your deepest, darkest secrets— your spouse, your doctor, your best friend? Most likely, your hairdresser is on that list! But what if you can’t trust one of your most precious possessions, your locks, to him or her? Apparently that’s what happened with a hairdresser in a retirement community in Town & Country, one who seemed more intent on the other kind of locks. Kerri Sprink, 39, of Imperial, allegedly broke into resident apartments in the Garden Villas Retirement Community and made off with more than $85,000 in jewelry, cash and collectible coins, police say. Sprink allegedly used a master key to
enter at least seven units, which cops have on video from the surveillance camera they surreptitiously installed. Work was slated to begin last week on Washington U’s $80 million student apartment and retail project in the Delmar Loop. Straddling U. City and the city of St. Louis, the venture is a strategic investment through which the university aims to provide a model of sustainable urban living. The 4.4-acre mixed-use development will incorporate a number of ‘green’ features—the school aims for at least a LEED gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, secondhighest on the scale. Joe Edwards, owner of or partner in businesses on both sides of Skinker Boulevard, lauds the project as another way to knit together both ends of the Loop. Built on university-owned property, five new buildings, with apartments for about 600 undergraduate students and 22,000 square feet of new retail B:11.375” space, are slated for move-in by T:10.875” August 2014. A blight began spreading across America after World War II, the stultifying sameness that came to be known as the strip mall, and one of the first of its kind was Yorkshire Shopping Center. Part of that vintage ‘minimall’ is to be razed for… a CVS store. One would think the pharmacy chain is trying to put a store on every corner zoned commercial before Walgreens does… or McDonald’s, or Starbucks, or ‘Put Their Name Here.’ The site in south Webster Groves, at Watson and Laclede Station roads, is a mile or so west of the vacant Kenrick Plaza property in Shrewsbury where—be still my heart—a new Walmart is to be constructed. It could have been a Home Depot, or Lowe’s, or Office Depot. Alas, long gone are the days when a mom-and-pop shop could thrive. Seems it has to be just one more of a zillion outlets controlled by a multinational corporation from far, far away. As long as there is a TIF to be granted, the minimall-ization of our great city will continue unabated.

Patty: Growing up, I never even talked to my friend’s parents other than a quick, Hello Mrs. Cleaver, as I slinked by on the way to the basement rec room. As a matter of fact, I still call my father-in-law Mr. Hannum! Having been a Girl Scout leader for a number of years, I learned a thing or two about rude children, and in most situations they don’t even know they’re being rude. Call them on it. Explain that you are in the middle of a conversation and will get to them in a few minutes. Say, Excuse me, when they burp if they don’t say it themselves. But most of all, just practice your stare—the one that says, If you don’t behave there will be serious trouble. Many parents want to be their children’s friends. I have enough friends, but I have only two children. So even if your friends don’t expect their kids to be well mannered, you should. Raschelle: MYOB, remember that? If not, it means Mind Your Own Business. Keep your focus on your own kids, and if you don’t have any, then you have a perfect excuse for never spending time with any kids ever, so do that. I mean, who appointed you final arbiter of good manners and parenting? Kids today are already over-parented. We schedule every minute of their play dates, we monitor every bit of their homework, we enroll them in the finest extracurricular activities—the ones we think will get them ahead in life—and in general, coordinate every move they make and every thought they have. Whatever happened to letting kids be kids? I say ignore what bothers you and praise what you like. I recently started dating a woman, and with Valentine’s Day right around the corner, I am not sure what I should do. Is a card enough? I also don’t want to screw things up. —Don’t Want to Be Cupid’s Stooge
Patty: My suggestion is get yourself to a jewelry store and buy her an engagement ring, pronto! Kidding. If it helps, the woman you are dating is having some of the same thoughts. Should I give him a card? Do I knit him a scarf? Do I even acknowledge the holiday? Actually, men have it easier than women because they can’t go wrong with a card and flowers. And when I say flowers, I don’t mean a dozen roses. A single rose or some tulips work just as well. They say, I am thinking of you but I am not a stalker. For the women. one word: chocolate. You can’t go wrong with a box of chocolates for your new guy friend. One other thing, no teddy bears. Regardless of how cute they are, do not give your boyfriend or girlfriend a teddy bear with a little sign that says, I Love You Beary Much. This is a clear indication the relationship should end. Raschelle: Ah, Valentine’s Day, the New Year’s Eve of the romance industry. A holiday so fraught with expectations, that the only logical outcome is a boozy letdown. A holiday symbolized by long-stem roses, a beautiful flower cut off from its life source, destined to die—why is that a symbol of enduring love, by the way? Just thinking of all the forced affection makes me itch; in fact, it brings out the Dorothy Parker in me. Remember when she said, “This wasn’t just plain terrible, this was fancy terrible. Terrible with raisins in it.” That’s what you’re headed for when you force-celebrate love and romance. So no, you do not have to give her a gift on this over-engineered holiday. Instead, do something kind for her on a random day when she least expects it, and she can truly trust that you mean it. And if you really want to get your girl, do something she appreciates, like folding laundry. That one gets me every time. >> Patty Hannum hopes her husband of 29 years will read this article and give her tulips for Valentine’s Day. >> Raschelle Burton has a tragic and terrifying relationship with raisins that dates back to the day she lost both front baby teeth while eating them.

It took until Jan. 20, but the St. Louis Blues and the NHL season finally got under way after a lengthy lockout. The Blues made a very early statement as they shut out the Detroit Red Wings 6-0. With 27-year-old Jaroslav Halak in goal and a potentially great team surrounding him this season, the Blues are the pick of many NHL experts to win the Stanley Cup. Town & Style sat down with Halak recently to discuss how this season is shaping up.
Q. The lockout was the story for the first half of the NHL season. How difficult was it for you as a player? A. Me and my wife Petra were at home in Bratislava (Slovakia), spending time with family. It’s never good to be locked out, but you enjoy being at home.

Q. What’s been the best thing about being in St. Louis, both on and off the ice? A. The fans are very passionate about hockey here—they’re great. Off the ice, it’s more family-style here. I

Q. I ran into some people from Montreal, and when I told them I was from St. Louis, the first thing they said was, ‘We should never have traded Halak.’ Do you still hear that as well? A. Q. Do you have time to follow the Cardinals or Rams during the season? A. I did go to a World Series game in 2011. Q. What was the first big purchase you made after signing your contract? A. I don’t think I’ve purchased anything huge. You know you’re not going to play forever, and you have to

Senior Sets School Record
Stephanie Anderson didn’t think too much of it as she stepped up to the free throw line last month. After all, she’d shot hundreds, if not thousands of them since she first dribbled a ball. So she was momentarily confused when the crowd erupted as the ball sailed through the net—marking her 1,500th career point at Whitfield. “I had no idea until literally they started cheering loudly,” Anderson remembers. The senior guard had put the scoring milestone out of her mind during that game, but as she inched closer to the 1,500 mark this season, it seemed to be all she and her fellow Whitfield Warriors could think about. “Coach (Harold) Barker and our principal announced it to entire school,” she says. “I walked into the gym for shoot around, and there were posters and a countdown.” Anderson, who now holds the school record for girls basketball at 1,513, says no one knew how close she was until her junior year when they realized she already passed 1,000. “We thought I’d more than likely hit 1,500, so we’d celebrate that one instead.” And celebrate they did; play was stopped after that famous free throw to commemorate the achievement, and Anderson kept the game ball. But the season isn’t over yet, and the 8-5 Warriors are gunning for a district title. “Since I’ve been here, we haven’t gotten one, and it would be so exciting,” Anderson says. “We have a good chance this year, since we have a couple of bigger players, which enables me to go out to guard and not have to post up every possession.” Anderson, who plans to study biomedical engineering in college, is embracing her last year of high school, planning to try out for soccer and the spring musical for the first time. But basketball will always be priority No. 1. “I can’t see myself not playing,” she says. “It’s such a huge part of my life.”

Wrestler Dominates 106, 113 Classes
Opponents may mistake Ladue grappler Antonio Escobar as an easy target. And then the match starts, and suddenly they are tangled in a knot on the mat. As someone who used to be teased because of his 5-foot-2 height, Escobar says wrestling offered a chance to use his size to his advantage. “I love the passion and the hard work you put in and how it makes you tougher and stronger,” he says. “I’m happy how I am, and I see the good side of being small.” The senior wrestles in the 106- and 113-pound weight classes and holds a 34-4 record. He took the top spots at several tourneys so far this season, and he has his eyes on a district title. “In the 113-class, there are kids who are stronger or bigger than me,” Escobar says. “I have to counter the moves every time someone is pushing against me. Coach teaches me to use their force against them.” Escobar, who hopes to study engineering or the arts in college, says he appreciates professional wrestlers such as Olympic gold medalist Jordan Burroughs and UFC champion Cain Velasquez. “I admire how hard they have worked to be where they are,” he says. “Velasquez wrestled in college and high school, and now antonio escobar he’s the champion of the UFC.”

This Parkway West senior diver values healthy competition among teammates and the support of a dedicated coach. Do you remember your first dive?
When I was really young, I went to Shaw Park in Clayton. I saw the diving towers and was dared to jump. My mom came running and tried to stop me, but I jumped off. I had just learned how to swim the day before! You’ve earned 269 points this season. What is your goal?
I have a competition going with my club teammate, Marissa. She scored a high school record of 304, and my school record is 296. I’d be really happy with 300—but I’d like to beat both.
Nurture TEAMWORK Nurture SUCCESS!
What do others think of your sport?
A lot of people underestimate diving as a sport. Most people aren’t sure of what it entails. I brought my boyfriend to my practice to have him try out what we do, and his parents told me how sore he was the next day. Where do you want diving to take you, after a college scholarship?
Coach, a few teammates and I are training for the 2016 Olympic trials. It’s attainable as long as I have a strong team that will continue to take this journey with me. I have three other girls saying, You can do this, and we’re working toward it together. Coach always says the diving board is the loneliest place in the world, so it’s nice to have that support.

i D❤! Holly Warrick & Jason Alves] by rebecca koenig | photos by jeff kathrein, k&k photography

Holly Parrish Warrick, a Marquette High School graduate, married Jason John Alves at Longboat Key, Fla., June 23, 2012. The two PricewaterhouseCoopers employees met in the St. Louis office in 2009 and were engaged at a family friend’s house in Mexico Beach, Fla., on July 4, 2011. “He proposed to me in front of everybody on the beach,” Holly says. “It was a complete surprise, and it really couldn’t have been more perfect.” Having spent many family vacations in Sarasota, Fla., Holly decided it would be a lovely place for a wedding. “We chose Longboat Key Club to have our wedding because we both have such a love for the beach and warm weather,” she says. “We wanted our wedding to be a relaxing vacation for everybody to take.” The unexpected tropical storm that swept through that weekend moved the ceremony indoors, but did not dampen anyone’s spirits. “It was the most wonderful day, and I wouldn’t have changed a thing,” Holly says. “It didn’t make a difference that it was raining or storming.” The amaretto wedding cake at the reception was paired with a chocolate and vanilla groom’s cake topped with tiny mascots. “Jason graduated from Saint Louis University, but he has a love for the Georgia Bulldogs, so I thought it only made sense to split his cake and have half devoted to the Billikens and half to the Bulldogs,” Holly says. The pair, who now live in Atlanta, honeymooned in Great Exuma Island, Bahamas, and didn’t see a drop of rain the whole time.

chauffeured around town in a white limousine. There was just one problem—they weren’t each other’s dates. It wasn’t until a few months later, when Greg’s mother Phylis arranged a meeting for the two at Northwest Plaza, that romance sparked. “They just seemed to get along from the very beginning” Phylis says. “He could carry on a conversation with her. She was nice to him, and he liked that she was affectionate, hugging and holding hands.” Laura, 44, and Greg, 39, have developmental disabilities and are clients of Life Skills-TouchPoint Autism Services. They celebrated their 10th anniversary Feb. 1. Laura still remembers the day Greg asked her out. “He asked me on the first date,” she says.” I said, ‘Sure I love to, go ahead.’ Greg and me have a good relationship. Greg is a good person and handsome.” The couple spends several days a week together and often talk on the phone. Weekends bring the clash of pins at Olivette Lanes, where they spend every Saturday morning together. Laura says she and Greg remind each other about important tasks, like preparing for their jobs and helping each other through tough days. “I say, ‘Greg, what would you like to do?’,” she says. “He always helps me out with things. We watch over each other. He is going to take care of me. ” Phylis, who helps Greg and Laura plan their days together, says their date nights, daily phone conversations and occasional disagreements have strengthened not only their partnership, but also their relationships with others. “It’s typical of what couples go through, they just need more direction and supervision in what they are doing,” she says. “His relationship with Laura helps him tremendously with his social skills. It’s furthered his ability to have empathy, which was hard for him initially. But with Laura, he does this.” Phylis says Laura has become part of their family; they often juggle holidays between his side and hers. “I love them, too,” Laura says of Greg’s family. “I will share with them, and they help me be happy in my life.” For their 10th Valentine’s Day, Greg has a special evening planned. “We are going to a Valentine’s dance at St. Louis ARC,” Greg says. “I will wear a red shirt.” Thanks to this special connection with Laura, Greg doesn’t feel like an outsider among other couples, says his mother. “It gives him a sense of oneness with someone I don’t know he would have otherwise. In the past, I was his direct relationship to everyone. He communicated to the world through me. I am no longer his total focus, and that’s a sign of growth.” Greg says his hope for the future with Laura is simple: “Stay together. She makes me happy.”

parent trap attracting mr. or ms. right] by dr. tim jordan
as Valentine’s Day is upon us, it is a good time to think about what attracts us to that special someone. In the original Grimm’s version of Cinderella, she lives her adolescent years working hard and taking care of herself. She uses her years of servitude and sacrifice to become independent, strong and confident. When the ball arrives, Cinderella’s strength, confidence, and selfefficacy radiate and attract the prince. It’s a familiar transformation played out through fairy tales like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and our present-day Julia Roberts in the movie Runaway Bride. Research and evolutionary psychologists have pointed out biological differences in why people are attracted to each other. Universally, women look
for men who are about 3½ years older and 4 inches taller. Women are attracted to men with greater body symmetry because they are healthier and have stronger immune systems. And much more than visual appeal, some women are more interested in men with higher social status and more material resources, because these men, in theory, are more likely to be better providers for them and their children. Men, on the other hand, are much more visual creatures when it comes to mate selection. They are biologically wired to focus on fertile females and look for features that indicate reproductive health. Thus, men across all cultures tend to look for women with hourglass figures: large breasts, a small waist, flat stomach and full hips because these are strong visual markers of fertility. And one of man’s strongest drives is to promulgate the species, thus pushing him to want to have sex as soon as possible, in order to get his genes into the next generation. Increased sex
historically meant a greater number of offspring. More recent research by people like author Harville Hendrix shows that we tend to attract people who are at about the same emotional and psychological level as we are. Thus, our soul mate is pretty much our equal. I tell teenagers at my retreats to make a list of the qualities they desire in a soul mate, and then become the list. As they become the qualities they want in a life partner, they will radiate these outward and attract like energy. In essence, you must become more to have more. So, there are many biologically and hormonally wired processes going on below the surface of our consciousness that affect who we are attracted to. And there are some ways to consciously, purposefully work to best prepare ourselves for a healthy match. On this Valentine’s Day, I hope you appreciate the incredibly complex process that culminated in you marrying your spouse.

> Don’t experiment. This is not the weekend for your first round of extensions, highlights or bangs. For your own sake, stick with products you’ve used before and avoid painful irritation. > Don’t go overboard. An overly complicated hairstyle might stick out at a casual beach wedding—you can never go wrong with simple styles, ones that can be paired with black tie or sundresses. > Trust what works. If you wear a ponytail to work every day, don’t necessarily think you must wear your hair down. If you’re not used to the basics of the style, you’ll fidget and fuss with your hair, killing any potential for a long-lasting look. > It’s her day. Don’t steal the show with a bigger tiara than the bride’s, and make sure that you take any and all style cues from her special look.
// preppy half-updo //
1 Start with dry, clean hair. If your hair is curly, use Aveda Be Curly curl enhancing spray; if it’s straight, be generous with Oribe Impermeable Anti-humidity Spray after blow-drying. 2 Just above your crown, gently backcomb your hair to create a little lift—you are not trying out for Jersey Shore, so take it easy. Spray with a light dusting of Living Proof Root Lifting Spray to lock in volume. 3 Lightly comb front pieces back to just below your crown and secure with bobby pins. Avoid the temptation to pull out ‘tendrils’ except for bangs. You’re done!
// chic bun //
4 Continue by pulling all your hair through the center of the Sultra Bun Shaper—it’s similar to the plastic sponges used for scrubbing pots, but with a hole in the middle. The top of the shaper should cover the bobby pins from before.
5 In small sections, start at the bottom center and wrap hair around the shaper, securing ends toward your scalp. Move in a clockwise rotation until all your hair has been secured. 6 Use a small comb or even a toothbrush to make sure strands lie flat and no part of the shaper is peeping through. 7 Whether up or down, finish your look with a blast of super-strong BigSexyHair Spray and Play, formulated to last on the dance floor. Add a bit of personal style with a ribbon headband, glittery hair pin or other special accessory.

When it comes to heart health, teamwork is essential. That’s why SLUCare (the physicians of Saint Louis University) and SLU Hospital established the Center for Comprehensive Cardiovascular Care, or C4. The center, at SLU Hospital, gathers SLUCare physicians from the areas of general cardiology, electrophysiology and cardiac surgery. “By bringing these specialties together at a single location, C4 can deliver thoughtful, thorough, individualized care,” says SLUCare cardiac surgeon Dr. Richard Lee, who co-directs the center with Dr. Michael Lim, an interventional cardiologist. “Patients benefit from improved diagnosis, treatment and management of cardiovascular disease.” Among the most common heart problems is atrial fibrillation, an arrhythmia affecting up to 6 million people in the U.S. “Afib is caused by an electrical system malfunction in the upper chambers of the heart, or atria,” Lee explains. “As a result, the heart doesn’t pump efficiently, depriving the body of oxygen-rich blood.” Afib can be debilitating and even deadly. “Short term, it can cause weakness and fatigue; long term, it can cause heart failure,” he says. “What’s more, the blood that stays in the atria can pool and cause clotting and stroke. In fact, afib is the second most common cause of stroke.” In the past, when medication failed to manage afib effectively, the only way to treat it was through openheart surgery, an invasive procedure that involves cutting open the chest, breaking the sternum and stopping the patient’s heart. But among the many state-of-the-art procedures available at C4 is an innovative, minimally invasive treatment called the hybrid maze, which Lee helped develop. “Guided by an endoscopic camera, we use radiofrequency energy to make small scars in a maze-like pattern in and around the heart,” Lee says. “The scars isolate and redirect abnormal electrical signals that disrupt heart rhythm. We also remove the area in which most clots form, to reduce the longterm risk of stroke.” The procedure can be performed in two stages on separate days, with Dr. Ali Mehdirad, an electrophysiologist, performing the second stage. “But in two-thirds of patients, only the first stage is slucare cardiac surgeon dr. richard lee necessary,” Lee says. The procedure is less risky than open-heart surgery and recovery time is shorter, he adds. “Best of all, 90 percent of patients are completely afib-free afterward—and 100 percent have a greatly reduced risk of stroke.” Joe Lipic, age 77, underwent a hybrid maze in January. “I was sick of feeling tired and dizzy, and I hated taking so much medication,” he says. He was up and about the day after the procedure; three weeks later, he rode a bike eight miles. He’s no longer on medication. “The C4 docs teamed up to give me the very best care. My heart’s back in rhythm, and I feel awesome!” photo by slucare

HEALTH&BEAUTY
[ the beat goes on by sara savat
Doctors and researchers have made exciting advancements in the fight against heart disease, but a healthy lifestyle is still the best way to prevent problems. Simple steps like exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy diet, kicking a nicotine habit, and controlling your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugars can help you feel better and reduce your risk for disease.
[ prevention ] Can a vitamin a day keep a heart attack away? Dr. Robert Elder, Metro Chiropractic and Nutritional Wellness Centre Preventing a heart attack by properly ‘feeding’ the heart with the necessary nutrition is something that has not yet been proven with research. However, common sense dictates that if you give the body what it needs, it’s going to function better and longer. Supplements that contain CoQ10 have been shown to be helpful in heart function and protection, and so has fish oil, in some cases. A good B complex also is very helpful. A deficiency in B vitamins can increase
homocysteine levels, which is an indicator for heart disease. B vitamins also help keep the blood vessels open so there’s less resistance, leading to lower blood pressure. Magnesium helps maintain normal heart muscle tone and acts as a natural relaxer, which can help decrease blood pressure in some patients. As always, it’s a good idea to consult your doctor before taking vitamins or supplements. It’s also important to choose the right supplements. Most supplements are made in a lab and are synthetic, meaning they are chemical derivatives of the actual vitamin. There are many co-factors in whole food nutrition supplements that are missing in synthetic vitamins.
[ aortic aneurysms ] Looking for a reason to quit smoking? Tobacco use greatly increases your risk for an aortic aneurysm. Dr. Dave Sewall, Missouri Baptist Medical Center An aortic aneurysm is an abnormal enlargement and ballooning outwards of the aorta, the main vessel that supplies blood through the body and its organs. Aortic aneurysms can occur either in the abdomen or chest. Abdominal aortic aneurysms are more common in males—12.5 percent of men over age 75 have abdominal aortic aneurysms, compared to 5 percent of women the same age. Both types occur more frequently with age and in smokers. I worry most about patients who have multiple risk factors, such as a man over 65 who smokes, has high blood pressure and a family history of the disease. Aortic aneurysms that become large enough to pose a risk or interfere with surrounding blood vessels or organs, as well as aneurysms that have ruptured or torn, can be treated either with surgical repair or the placement of a stent graft. The most effective thing you can do to prevent an aortic aneurysm is reduce the risk factors within your control. Monitor your blood pressure and cholesterol and do not smoke—
especially if you have a family history of aortic disease. Dr. Gordon Knight, Des Peres Hospital Detecting and treating aortic aneurysms before they rupture is critical. Only about 10 to 20 percent of people survive an abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture—about half die at home or on the way to the hospital. And most aortic aneurysms develop without warning, though some individuals experience vague abdominal or back pain. A person with a family history of aortic aneurysm or a history of smoking should be screened sometime around 55 to 60 years old. Routine general screening should begin around age 65 with simple abdominal aorta ultrasound. New technology allows treatment of 90 percent or more of abdominal aortic aneurysms by minimally invasive endovascular repair, a procedure that supports the weak part of the aorta to keep it from rupturing. Most patients are home within 24 to 36 hours.
[ on the horizon ] “There’s good news in the field of cardiovascular disease,” says Dr. Phillip Cuculich, assistant professor of medicine at Washington University School of Medicine. “We’re starting to win the battle against it. Cardiovascular disease is still the No. 1 killer of Americans, but in recent years, there’s been a decline in these deaths, thanks in part to advancements in treatments and technology and to patients taking better control of their health.” Treatments are becoming less invasive. For example, the new transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure allows surgeons to replace aortic valves through a vein in the leg, rather than conventional open-heart surgery. “TAVR is less invasive and offers a very quick recovery,” Cuculich says. “Because it’s less invasive, surgeons are able to offer this life-changing procedure to people who aren’t healthy enough to withstand open-heart surgery.” Doctors and surgeons are working together to perfect a way of treating atrial fibrillation, the most common irregular heartbeat condition. “The new hybrid approach combines minimally invasive surgical techniques with the latest advances in catheter-based treatments,” Cuculich says. “The goal is to achieve the excellent results of open-heart surgery with the smaller risk of less invasive treatments.” Treatments are also becoming more personalized. “We’re tailoring our approach based on specific features of the disease in each person, or even the genetic makeup of the patient,” Cuculich says. In March, the School of Medicine plans to open the Center for Cardiovascular Genetics, which will be targeted toward patients with a strong family history of cardiovascular disease and will help them understand their risk for heart failure.

[ cardiac catheterization ] “Cardiac catheterization is a routine medical procedure used to diagnose and treat some heart conditions,” explains Dr. Sami Bishara, an interventional cardiologist at SSM St. Joseph Health Center. During the procedure, the physician inserts a long, flexible tube called a catheter into an artery in the groin, wrist or neck, and feeds it to the heart. A dye is injected to highlight the coronary arteries that supply the heart with blood, and pictures are taken to determine the degree of plaque buildup. “If the patient has more than 70 percent blockage, it needs to be fixed,” Bishara says. “The most common way to treat blockage is to put a stent in the artery.” Cardiac catheterization is also used to treat patients having heart attacks. “In these cases, the goal is to open the blockage within 90 minutes of first medical contact,” Bishara says. “We have a saying in cardiology, ‘time is muscle.’ The longer you take to open up that blockage, the more the heart muscle dies.” While there are risks associated with any surgery, the procedure is very safe and should be pain-free, Bishara notes. “The worst thing the patient experiences is a small needle stick in the groin or arm to numb the site, similar to the numbing shot you get at the dentist.” The patient is asleep during most of the procedure and won’t remember the experience, he adds.
[ heart attack & women ] Many women who have a heart attack never experience chest pain or pressure. Recognizing the warning signs that are unique to women, and seeking immediate help, can be the difference between life and death. Dr. Joseph A. Craft III, Mercy Clinic Heart & Vascular Last January, my cousin Debbie died at age 54 from a massive heart attack. I later learned she had been experiencing shortness of breath for a few months. Her doctors and kids had encouraged her to get a stress test, but Debbie dismissed her symptoms. She didn’t feel too bad most of the time, and she was very busy with her career and grandchildren. Like many women, Debbie didn’t experience the classic chest pain or pressure typically associated with heart attacks. Although these symptoms remain common in men and women, women may also experience symptoms including progressive shortness of breath, unusual fatigue, excessive sweating, back/arm/neck/ jaw discomfort, increasing confusion and lightheadedness. We used to think of heart disease as a man’s affliction, but we now know that more women than men die of cardiovascular disease each year. It is the No. 1 killer of women. And, arguably, heart attacks are more serious in women. Approximately 23 percent of women die within one year of their first heart attack, compared to 18 percent of men. If you think you or a loved one may be at risk of cardiovascular disease, or if you experience any of the symptoms above, see a doctor right away. Dr. Daryl Jacobs, St. Luke’s Hospital As a woman, there are three things you can do to prevent a heart attack, or increase your chances of surviving a heart attack. First, know your risk factors. Women who have hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, a family history of coronary artery
disease, or are over the age of 65 are at an increased risk of having a heart attack. Women who are obese or have a sendentary lifestyle also are at risk. If you have worrisome symptoms or any risk factors for coronary artery disease, see your physician before you have a heart attack. Second, recognize that women often experience different heart attack symptoms. As many as 43 percent of women do not experience acute chest pain. Common female heart attack symptoms include weakness, shortness of breath, fatigue, abdominal discomfort and back pain. Women with heart attacks are frequently misdiagnosed as having an abdominal problem due to these atypical symptoms. Third, if you think you’re having a heart attack, call 911 immediately. Time is critical. The faster you get to the hospital, the less your heart muscle will be damaged. You may also chew four baby aspirin or take one 325 mg full-dose aspirin.

I am already a firm believer in the benefits of organic and hormone free, however the beauty is in the convenience. son Sandy, you’re asking for trouble. Jason Bateman plays the unfortunately named man whose identity is stolen by Diana (Melissa McCarthy), an unassuming conwoman with a serious shopping addiction. To save his job, Sandy tracks her down and the two embark on a classic comedy trope—the road trip. It speaks to the comedic powers of McCarthy and Bateman that a generally unremarkable movie kept me laughing almost nonstop. The jokes, equal parts slapstick and zingy one-liners, provided far more entertainment than the tired plot and mundane villains. Sometimes, you just need a good laugh, and that’s exactly what Identity Thief delivers. Should You See It? Not a must-see, but a nice relief from Oscar heavy hitters and Valentine’s drivel. —C.K.

Oscar-nominated short films, which have been cleverly strung together with brief narration by the 2011 winning filmmaker in this category, Luke Matheny (God of Love). Besides the obvious benefits of being familiar with the entrants on Oscar night, I was impressed with how impactful an 18-minute film can be. Of the five, I found the American film Curfew, about alienation and redemption, most memorable. Henry, a French film about loss of self, traces the tragedy of dementia through an old man’s flashbacks; Death of a Shadow, Belgian-made, is a quirky take on the value of life; the Afghan film Buzkashi Boys pits individuality against duty through the touching friendship of two young boys; and in Asad, from South Africa, the human spirit cannot be crushed, even in the chaos of Somalia. Should You See It? Yes, if only to experience how emotive short films can be. —D.W. Viewed at the Tivoli Theatre

$55 and $85 tasting menus
THE FAVORITES |
White Sweet Potato Soup, Filet of Beef, Lardo Wrapped Shrimp, Sage Ice Cream
Acclaimed chef Gerard Craft has moved his popular Niche into the heart of Clayton, and his devotees have followed. The three-time James Beard nominee for Best Midwest Chef offers only prix fixe menus here: four courses for $55 or nine for $85. The food is definitely ‘fussy,’ with some items on the plate deconstructed/reconfigured in the molecular gastronomy style, yielding things like crystallized carrot cake and powdered lard. This kind of food is ‘an event,’ as the chef experiments with transforming the character of familiar foods. He gets us to experience food differently by combining ingredients in atypical, interesting ways. The first of our four courses was White Sweet Potato Soup, a delectable puree of potato and cream poured tableside over several artful elements: smoked paprika oil, Meyer lemon, bits of tangy cress and something called ‘sage marshmallows,’ meringue-like dots infused with sage. When the soup is poured over them, they melt, adding their creamy herbal flavor to the whole.
Second course was a plate of carrots served three ways. Long, narrow baby carrots, split lengthwise, were roasted to a natural glaze (spiced with curry) and served alongside carrot puree and a tiny ramekin of ‘carrot cake,’ Craft’s whimsical name for crystalized crumbs. It was interesting, but not as impressive as my dining partner’s Lardo Wrapped Shrimp: two fabulous-tasting, head-on crustaceans topped by paper-thin pieces of lard and presented on a salsify puree with blood orange. Course three, the ‘main’ (in my case it was Filet of Beef), had pieces of tenderloin over mashed potatoes, topped with crisped Brussels sprouts leaves and bits of what looked like crumbled bleu cheese. Turns out that was smoked tallow, or dehydrated beef fat. The dish was meticulously labor-intensive, and it showed: that plate of food was memorable. The meat was superior, having been prepared sous vide, a process that preserves moisture and flavor. The side elements, too, were notable, with the potatoes very creamy and the delicate sprouts leaves oven-crisped.

I caught a fish while sailing in Turkey, and we pulled up to a beach and grilled it with olive oil and dill.
Every element on the plate was a 10, in terms of flavor intensity. As for the dried tallow, it was not so much flavorful as textural. Dry and powdery, it melted in the mouth and added its fat sensation when eaten with the beef. An accompanying sauce of preserved blueberries in port jus was quite sweet, a flavor I found intrusive, considering everything else that was going on in my mouth. The other two main course offerings were Squab and Glazed Cauliflower. Dessert was choice of Sage Ice Cream or Pumpkin Custard, each impressively presented with glaceed fruits, crumbles and other accoutrements. The ice cream, a tiny dollop of green, had the intense flavor of its herb, helped along by a few baby sage leaves on the plate that appeared to be lightly sugared (or salted). Dots of lemon curd were nearby, along with a narrow slice of earthy sweet potato cake (actual cake this time). A tangy slice of glaceed, preserved lemon was on there, too.
[ food • ŏ • lō • gy ] Sous Vide | French for ‘under vacuum,’ this cooking process uses an airtight plastic bag submerged in a hot water bath (instead of oven/cooktop heat) for a more even, moisture-retentive result. Lardo | Italian for ‘fatback,’ this is seasoned pork rump fat cured in salt brine Tallow | A rendered form of beef or mutton fat frequently used in shortening.
[ aftertaste ] >> This was an amazing experience! It presented food in ways I don’t usually see it or think of it.

>> It was really done well for this style of food, and nice to see so many local Missouri products used creatively. I found this an interesting format for a meal out; you just don’t find this at many St. Louis restaurants. ‑—Sarah W. of Clayton

Betsy Snyder wasn’t even looking to move when the house at 3 Countryside Lane, which she admired on the drive to her son’s school, went on the market. “I always loved that house,” she says. “Every time I drove by, I loved the look of it.” After touring the inside and finding it as charming as the exterior, Synder and her family made it theirs. “It felt more like a home, rather than a house you walk into,” she says. “I’ve never seen anything like it; it’s just a really special house and has such a warm feeling to it.” Having lived across the pond for years, Snyder liked the home’s European feel, most immediately noticeable in the elegant ivy climbing its stone walls. The unusual layout also appealed to her. With its family room connected to an outdoor patio, the lower level was a great place for her teenage son to entertain company. “It was perfect for him to have friends over— they had privacy,” Snyder says. The kitchen became the center of her family’s activity. “We spent a lot of our time in the kitchen, and it has a beautiful eating space,” Snyder says. She had granite counter tops installed, and rearranged cupboards to create more room. Other upgrades to the house included a renovated master bath and the addition of a gas fireplace in the family room. Holiday family gatherings took place in the large dining room. “It’s very expansive, with a candle chandelier and fireplace,” she says. photos by steven b. smith photography “At the winter holidays, it’s just charming. When the candles in the chandelier are lit, it’s just magical at Thanksgiving and Christmas.” The property’s acre of land was more spacious than Snyder was used to in Kirkwood, and she thinks someone with a green thumb will love the room to plant. “When we moved in, there was a hillside full of lavender,” she says. “For someone who’s a gardener, the potential for developing the gardens is amazing.” Snyder loved living on Countryside Lane, which gave her proximity to both Kirkwood and Frontenac. “I grew up in Kirkwood, so I liked going to the Kirkwood Farmers Market,” she says. “I also go west to do things out that way. It’s convenient to nearly everything.” The sense of community also appeals. “There’s a picnic every September and holiday parties,” she says. “There’s a book club you can join, and there’s a movement to get together for people’s birthdays every month. Although there’s a lot of privacy, which I like, there is a sort of lane feel, too.”

homework] Dear Homework,
I want to update the look of the front of our house. Do you have suggestions on how to improve or strengthen the look of the pillars? How can we open up the front porch? ———Bewildered in Brentwood
Dear Bewildered in Brentwood,
After
before
Colonial Revival homes of the ’40’s and ’50’s often had very minimal and thin detailing that was a leftover tendency from the previous Art Deco era. Your slender porch columns are an example of this. If you make the columns twice their current width, you should replace the existing arches with a new straight beam. This gives the façade a more serious look, but perhaps at the loss of some of its charm. I am also suggesting placing new full-length shutters at the front door to increase its impact, and planting your boxwoods closer together to create an instant, low hedge. A line of purple and red tulips would add a cheerful and dramatic accent. None of these changes have ‘opened up’ the porch as you requested. It already looked pretty open to me. Instead, the house now looks more elegant and finished, the most straightforward way to upgrade its appearance. Thank you for asking, ———Homework
